In contrast to global trends, African, especially South African, surface mining operations have shown a significant rate of adoption of Electronic Detonators (ED’s) over the last few years. Proven benefits of converting to ED’s from pyrotechnic initiation systems have aided this market conversion. These benefits are experienced throughout the mining operation. Benchmarking exercises, prior to the introduction of ED’s, form part of the conversion process and allow for quantifying improvements. Extensive work has been done on quantifying the benefits of converting to ED’s and have shown that results can be reproducible. Improvements have been experienced in many applications and include environmental impact control, improved mining efficiencies, increased cast benefit and improved size distribution. These step changes in blasting results, in conjunction with the adoption of ED technology have aided the rapid conversion of the African surface market.

The St. Lawrence Seaway's Welland Canal has been undergoing a rehabilitation program that requires the removal of deteriorated concrete from the 25 meter high lock walls. Multi million dollar contracts must be completed during the three month winter freeze up. New blast designs have drastically cut the time required for concrete demolition. All blast results including vibration, noise, underbreak, overbreak, scaling and flyrock have been improved and at a lower cost.

Falls of ground remain a leading cause of fatalities and injuries in underground mines. In response to this situation, the Bureau of Mines conducted a series of experiments in the White Pine room-and-pillar copper mine which resulted in smoother, safer ribs due to a reduction in the amount of overbreak caused by blasting. The tests evaluated the effects of changes in the loading of the rib holes of the mine's 20- by 28-ft drift round driven in shale and sandstone. The relative integrity of the ribs remaining after the blasts was measured using both photographic and seismic refraction techniques.

Over the past several years, the Hercules Technical Service Group for the Explosives Department has produced a series of programs for the TI59 programmable calculator dealing with explosive application problems. These programs have been made available to both our internal staff and to the Hercules explosives distributor organization. Several of these programs have found good acceptance and wide usage.

There are a variety of sources of dynamic stress which can affect a building and give rise to cracking. A two-storey house, situated in the middle of a surface coal mine was monitored for a period of 30 months to attempt to identify the major causes of cracking. The factors described as environmental include internal and external temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, rainfall and water table level. These were monitored using a weather station and piezometer and recorded every 20 minutes. The other factors are vibratory and include normal household movement (walking, shutting doors etc.), vehicle vibration and blast vibration. All the significant vibrations in the house were recorded using four sets of velocity transducers and accelerometers.

Explosives are used in the entertainment industry in a wide variety of applications. Live performances such as automobile races, air shows and the like have incorporated the use of explosives into their programs. Even art work has been created employing explosive materials and techniques. The primary entertainment use of explosives, however, remains in motion pictures, television, theater and related fields where it comes under the auspices of special effects. Much of it falls roughly into the category of demolition, though the object being demolished may range from a cigarette in a person's mouth or clothing worn by actors to large objects such as automobiles, aircraft, or boats. This paper will attempt to provide an overview of the materials and methods by which these special effects are created as well as highlight the unique problems encountered in this field and their often equally unique solutions.

The Brisbane City Council has implemented a program of continual improvement at its Mount Coot-tha Quarry in the heart of Brisbane, Australia. The program has been underway for the past 6 years, and has resulted in very significant improvements in terms of both the cost effectiveness of its operation, and in terms of its environmental impact on nearby residents. The work has included a focus, amongst other things, on blasting efficiency, and has challenged conventional thinking in terms of the size of blasts fired, the frequency of firing, the diameter of blastholes, and the use of bulk emulsion or slurry explosives.

Disturbed zones of rock have been measured for blasted highway rock cuttings by Matheson and Swindells of the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) of Great Britain. These zones have been shown to be directly attributable to the blasting process and accordingly vary in depth depending on blasting technique. Perimeter blasting such as smoothwalling and pre-splitting has been shown to be effective in reducing the depth of disturbed rock. Although extensive work has been carried out on surface excavations for medium diameter (l00mm) blast holes, none has been undertaken for underground excavations.

The research reported here was part of an effort to evaluate the safety of a process to recover TNT from MK-9 depth bombs by the autoclave meltout process. In this process the depth bombs are heated to 121oC so that the TNT will melt and run into a vat. Unfortunately, asphalt lining the inside surface of the bomb also melts and flows out with the TNT. Prior to this study, it was not known what effect the asphalt contamination and the higher than normal process temperatures (121oC) would have on the sensitivity of the TNT.

AEL’s Electronic Delay Detonators are in routine use and growing in both volume and breadth of application in Africa. This trend will continue and grow internationally owing to increasing pressure on rockbreaking operations to conform to sustainable development principles. A fundamental breakthrough has been achieved, bringing production blasting into line with technologies, which leverage performance through tight monitoring and control. When moving from pyrotechnic systems, benefits are normally realized without having to adopt different timing patterns, but significant additional benefits are realisable by using the flexibility and precision of the electronic units to enter windows of timing previously closed. The higher price and increased care needed are a worthwhile investment, enabling operations to cross the chasm to stronger revenues, but the system must be robust and suited to the application and personnel. Economic models are vital for keeping track of the potential and achieved benefits of these systems. Some resistance can be expected from those who stand to lose income as a result of the improved efficiencies.

Pressure time histories were recorded for low density ammonium nitrate/fuel oil, detonated in long heavy walled steel cannons of various bores. These were shell used in a finite element model of a horizontally layered limestone rock mass to predict the crack propagation limits in presplit blasting for a range of borehole diameters. Apart from showing very good agreement with field results, the model clearly demonstrated the strong dependence of the results on the pressure-time curve. The important elements were the peak pressure, the rise time to it and its duration. Control of these characteristics offers the possible future production of more ideally suited pressure-time profiles for the optimization of crack propagation distances and borehole spacings for various ground conditions. Also the results to date provide the basis for investigating the characteristics of the explosives presently used in presplit blasting, and finding ways to modify them with the purpose of optimizing the field results.

A study was performed to evaluate the predictability of airblast overpressures induces by production mine blasting. Thirty-seven production blasts were monitored using 3 blasting seismographs giving over 100 blast overpressure records. Blasts were monitored at 5 coal highwall operations and at a limestone quarry, all in the midwest. Blasts consisting of small surface charges were monitored to permit an assessment of prediction methods under controlled conditions, as well as to observe actual delay intervals and their influence on the overpressure.

Full-face blasts were fired in a 12 x 8 ft drift of an underground hardrock mine in a basalt formation with porphyry copper to study the effects of drill pattern and explosive type on the size distribution of the resulting muckpile. Each muckpile produced by five full-face blasts was sampled four times with a scooptram equipped with a 5-cu yd bucket and the size distribution of the broken rock in each bucket was determined by screen analysis. Results show a strong dependence of the fragment size distribution of muckpile on the blast pattern and explosive type for a given rock type. The mean fragment size of the broken rock was compared with the predictive equations of other investigators. Random sampling of the muckpile from full-scale blasts and screen analyses of the samples are recommended in assessing the size distribution of the broken rock because of scaling errors that are inherent in full-scale blasts when designed from results of small-scale tests.

There was no use of emulsion explosive at Croatia till 1997. Several attempts have been done to bear out the economical and technological affordability of applying the emulsion explosive for open pits and to make the contractor familiar with characteristics of emulsion explosive exepiting experimental blasts series at more open pits on different kinds of rocks. Testing the efficiencies of emulsion explosive there has been applied the original method for linear enlargement of burden of Sc.D. Josip Krsnik’s from Mining, Geology & Oil Faculty, University at Zagreb. The method of linear burden’s enlargement, in distinction from other methods concerning these problems, has been carried out in situ, under real exploitation conditions whereas the physical-mechanical rock’s features, geological conditions, bed relations and rocks’ structure influence the blast efficiencies. On such way, by mean of method the precise boring and blast sizes will be reached for each kind of rock and geological structural bed’s conditions referring to specific explosive type. The technical-economical analysis indicates the most favorable explosive type for specific bed.

With the advent of large scale blasts utilizing overburden casting techniques, it was imperative that an ultra reliable surface delay system be developed. Shock tube and detonating cord surface delay systems have been hampered by the lack of a reliable easy-touse method of incorporating multiple paths of initiation to each hole. Two new redundant nonelectric delay systems have been developed utilizing multiple signal paths to allow a higher degree of safety and reliability. The first system designed uses a combination of detonating cord and nonelectric shock tube delays to allow multiple delay paths to each hole. The second system incorporates a new all shock tube delay system which allows multiple delay paths while minimizing over-pressure by eliminating detonating cord trunk lines. These two redundant systems have been used in over 500 production blasts without any misfires due to surface cut-offs or detonator malfunctions.

Vibrations are of concern not only for the safety of surface structures but also for the stability of underground openings. A number of parameters affect the intensity of vibration in underground openings due to blasting in adjacent opencast mine viz. total explosive weight detonated in a round, maximum explosive weight per delay, propagating media, depth of cover, RMR of the roof rock, age of the underground openings etc. Although a few researchers have tried to study the impact of parameters stated above, the impact of initiation sequences on generation of vibration in underground openings due to opencast blasting has yet remained untouched. A study was planned to evaluate the impact of initiation sequences on the magnitude of vibration in underground openings due to blasting in opencast mine. Nine production blasts with top and bottom initiations were performed at Samleshwari opencast project in India and eighteen vibration data were monitored in the roof of Hingir Rampur underground colliery in both the initiation sequences. The result indicated that the vibration produced in the underground openings from bottom initiation was lower than that of top initiation.

The camps, which include substantial industry participation, have been an outstanding success with both the students and their parents. They have also spawned a large amount of local, state and national media attention, including NPR and an article in the New York Times on the 3rd of July 2007.

Recent Office of Surface Mining regulations have called for pre-blast surveys of residences within one-half mile of blasting. Unless lighting effects and the multiple origins of cracks are recognized, hurried (lowest bid price) pre-blast surveys may be more harmful than beneficial. Unrecorded, but pre-existent, cracks can be noticed by homeowners during blasting under special lighting conditions. This paper discusses important factors to note during pre-blast surveys, presents data collection forms and discusses the importance of photographic technique in recording cracks (both present and previously patched).
