In Western coal mining, as coal seams become deeper, older equipment must be replaced with that which can do the job more efficiently.

Drill and Blast Engineer Abstract In 2019, the Bingham Canyon Mine, owned by Rio Tinto Kennecott Utah Copper Company, mined through the active underground that dewaters the pit. The active underground required the limitation of vibrations to avoid catastrophic damage or damage that would require work to the shotcrete and additional roof support. The surface design of the current sector next to and through portions of the active underground. The drill and blast group was required to test site law vibration parameters to ensure that vibration limitations were lower than limits set by the underground management team. Seismographs were used to validate the vibration prediction model and check performance of blast in areas of the underground. The bench conditions and limited pounds-per-delay created large obstacles for the blasting team, making it difficult for them to accurately load the pattern with the number of decks in the blast. Methods were used to improve the loading instructions and ensure that each hole achieved pound requirements based off of the distance to the underground that it was designed to protect. The project evolved from start to finish, and the process to estimate distances and loading improved to make the blast a more repeatable process for the size of the project.

Significant progress has been made in the reduction of serious injuries and fatalities resulting from mine blasting operations. Despite the progress, injuries and fatalities continue to occur. A leading cause of injuries and fatalities from blasting continues to be inadequate blast area security. Even though significant improvements in technology have been made, insuring adequate blast area security remains a challenge and requires constant vigilance. The advances in technology have created safer blasting products and have improved productivity and economics by enabling large, more efficient and effective blasts. However, as blasts grow larger in size, the complexity of adequately securing the blast area increases even more. Periodically the basic fundamentals involved in blasting safety should be reviewed, particularly for securing a blast site regardless of the size of the planned blast. Factors such as flyrock and toxic fumes must be taken into account to insure the safety of persons and property from the results of a blast. This paper examines the factors related to injuries due to inadequate blasting shelters and blast area security, and identifies mitigation techniques. The key concepts are: (a) accurate determination of the bounds of the blast area, (b) clearing employees from the blast area, (c) effective access control, (d) use of adequate blasting shelters, (e) efficient communications, and (f) training. Fundamentals are reviewed with an emphasis on analyzing task elements and identifying root causes for selected blasting accidents. Mitigating techniques are presented along with discussions and examples.

The AngloGold Ashanti - Cuiaba mine sought innovative approaches to minimize lateral development and stope extraction time while maintaining optimal gold recovery and minimizing dilution. The stope 8GAL EXT 30 was selected as a case study. Traditionally, conventional blasting methods in such a scenario would necessitate either a single mass blast or slot development at each end of the stope. These methods typically compromise recovery and dilution or increase development time and risk. Additionally, conventional wired detonators require workers to re-enter the stope between blasts to load blastholes and connect detonators. The wireless initiation system offers a solution by initiating blastholes using magnetic induction signals that can penetrate rock, air, and water. This technology allows a pre-charged stope to be mined without requiring workers to re-enter the area between blasts to charge and connect blastholes. Engineers from Orica and AngloGold Ashanti designed a new extraction sequence utilizing the wireless initiation system. The process began with the opening of one end of the stope using a conventional slot and wired electronic detonators. Subsequently, pre-loaded rings were fired in three blasts to extract the opposite end and the intersection. The 8GAL EXT 30 stope was successfully mined using this technology enabled method. Each blast was meticulously monitored, and the stope void was scanned to assess blast performance. The results demonstrated a 4.6% improvement in recovery and a 16% reduction in dilution compared to the initial plan, and reduced exposure of people to hazardous locations in the stope. These results represent an additional value of USD 200k, gained from implementing wireless initiation to enable this particular blasting schedule.

A European Directive requires that an explosive which is sold or transported within Europe must meet certain essential safety requirements from 1 January 2003. The assessment and certification of such an explosive is undertaken by an Explosives Notified Body and if the explosive meets the requirements a certificate is issued that allows the affixation of a CE mark. The presence of a CE mark ensures the product free access to European markets. The paper examines the requirements of the Directive, identifies those explosives that come within its scope, considers the role of an Explosives Notified Body, and explains the process of applying for certification.

Benches in surface mines often contain known areas of ore and known areas of waste, which must be mined selectively. When rock is blasted it not only fragments but is also physically, and non-uniformly, moved. Risks therefore exist of ore being lost if treated as waste and of mill feed being diluted by waste. Both possibilities carry serious fmancial implications.

Hydrocarbon fuel oils are one of the main components of ammonium nitrate-based explosives, including ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate-Fuel Oil) and emulsions. While a wide variety of fuels can, and have, been used in the manufacture of ANFO and emulsion products, No. 2 diesel, particularly dyed, off-road diesel, is widely used due to its ready availability and use in fueling mining equipment. However, a number of alternatives to standard diesel have been introduced over recent years, namely, biofuels, ‘high-performance’ diesels, and renewable diesels. The pressure to adopt these alternative fuels come from a variety of sources, such as initiatives to reduce carbon footprints, increased lifetime of equipment, and cost-advantages from tax credits. While these factors may provide a very real benefit to the mine site, a consideration that is often missed is how the use of these fuels can impact the formulation and characteristics of the ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Herein will be presented a discussion of these alternative fuels from a chemical perspective as well as the results of several studies focused on how the inclusion of various alternative diesels influences the production and performance of ammonium nitrate explosives. ANFO and emulsion were manufactured using representative fuel sources and studying in terms of the manufacturing parameters, shelf-life, interaction with other chemicals using in mining explosives. Detonation data was then collected for these products and compared to the behavior of products made with standard diesel fuels.

Alabama USA based Drummond Ltd. operates two open pit mines in the Cesar Coal Basin of Northern Colombia. The mines produce a combined total of over 25 million tons (22.7 Mt) of thermal coal per year which is transported by rail to Puerto Drummond, a direct ship loading facility, where it is exported to over 15 countries. The company has proven and probable reserves in excess of one billion tons of thermal coal.

Safety concern is one of the most important parameters in the design of building demolition by explosive blasting. Accidents were sometimes reported due to the flying chips of fragmented materials in building demolition work in urban area. Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the failure behavior of reinforced concrete pillars under blast loading and to develop an effective protection technique. Sixteen reinforced concrete pillars were constructed with two sizes: 450×450×1800 mm and 600×300×1800 mm. The failure behavior and the flying chip velocities were observed by means of a high-speed camera. Protection scheme was designed and the effects of several protection materials were investigated. Two kinds of non-woven fabrics and wire net were tested as protection materials. The results showed that reinforcing bar was one of the important factors to determine specific charges, and that mesh size of wire net and tied-up method affected the protection of flying chips. Control of gas effects is also a key to the control of flying chips. It was recommended to use both wire net and nonwoven fabrics as primary and secondary protection materials. Such protection scheme was successfully applied to the explosive demolition of 16 and 17-story apartment buildings.

Blasting and the use of civil explosives are a critical step in the mining process. Good decisions provide significant downstream benefits and create a safe and sustainable working environment, while poor decision making and judgement can have catastrophic consequences on workers safety, critical infrastructure or the security of the general public. An ever-tightening regulatory framework increasingly exposes manufacturers, transport companies and mining companies to the consequences of breaches resulting from erroneous or ill-informed decisions. In this context, new capabilities are required providing all actors in the explosive supply chain with tools to make better informed decisions allowing the individual to own up to his or her decision. Additionally, the traditional risk-control approach in the explosive supply chain up until usage and waste elimination, through administrative control procedures and processes, is becoming increasingly inadequate. In this era of digitalisation and automation, technology will play a pivotal role in ensuring safety and security in storage, transport and usage of civil explosives using the latest advances in electronics, communication technology and information technology. This paper explores the journey through time of technology in the civil explosives market to provide testing, measurement, analysis and control tools. This ultimately leads to better decision-making, ensures full accountability of the decision maker and uses the same technology to review decisions for process improvement, in the settlement of disputes or for the investigation of incidents. Finally, this paper reviews two practical cases of technology integration for risk management and improved decision making; the use of integrated GPS technology in initiation systems as an engineering control in the blast evacuation process and the use of RFID technology in explosive tracking from cradle to grave.

Because of its safety, being easy to handle, relatively inexpensive and containing a lot of energy, ANFO is the most popular and widely used explosive in Turkey as well as other countries in the world. According to change dated May 14th 1999 on the regulation 87/12028 related with explosives, blasters are not allowed to mix ammonium nitrate and fuel oil in the tield to make ANFO. Instead of this, they have been forced to use the ready ANFO prepared by explosive producer firms. As a result of this obligation, the use of technical nitrate for agricultural purpose and mixing AN and fuel oil in unsuitable conditions have been prevented. Indeed, wrong mixture means waste of energy and money.

In recent years significant advances have been made in chemical processing technology. In particular, process intensification using micro-technology has had some success in changing and improving chemical processes including mixing. Process Intensification is the miniaturization of unit operations and processes whereby a smaller compact piece of equipment takes the place of a larger one at the same given capacity or mass flow rate. This paper summarizes research into the application of the technology for manufacture of high internal phase water in oil ammonium nitrate emulsions (ANE’s) at low energy cost and with very low oil/fuel blend content. The emulsions can be used as precursors for preparation of explosives. The quality of the emulsion prepared was assessed through droplet and crystal analysis and compared with that of emulsions made by conventional large scale jet mixing technology.

While controlling fly rock and ground vibration in quarrying in the neighborhood of a residential area, producing good fragmentation and keeping different grades of material separated in a muckpile are important in maintaining the productivity of quality aggregates. This paper describes a single row production blast for the study of fragmentation and displacement in the grade control carried out at a quarry of Barrett Paving Materials Inc. in Sylvania, Ohio. Digital video imaging was used to monitor the blast-induced motion of the bench face as input to the DMC_Blast (Distinct Motion Code), for the analysis of the formation of the muckpile. The actual digitized blast video and the DMC_Blast simulation are compared. The displacement and mixing of all the inter-bedded limestone layers are made visible in the simulated cross-section of the muckpile. The apparent fragmentation analysed with PowerSieve is also discussed.
