This paper describes the methods of mining and washing brown iron are in 1957 at the Sawyer mine, leased by Wayne County Mining Co., and the Fore mine, leased by Four Mining Co., both in southern Missouri; it is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining and milling methods and costs in various districts of the United States. The Sawyer mine is in Wayne County, about 10 miles north-northeast of Williamsville (fig. 1); the Fore mine is in Howell County, about 20 miles southwest of West Plains (fig. 2). Both are open-pit mines from which the crude are was upgraded by washing and hand-sorting to produce are of grade and quality suitable for sale to operators of iron and steel furnaces. The operations described are typical of many others that produce or have produced marketable brown iron are from small sedimentary deposits, several hundred of which outcrop on the crests or hill sides of southern Missouri (fig. 3). The 1957 production of marketable brown iron are by 40 separate operations in the southern part of the State was 281,427 wet long tons, valued at $1,637,243. Production from the Sawyer mine that year was 17,000 dry long tons of washed are, and from the Fore mine, 20,816 dry long tons.

An investigation was made of pressure pulses produced by unconfined explosive blasts in underground openings. Four tests were made with TNT or modified amatol charges ranging in weight from 60 to 2,000 pounds; each test involved either single or multiple charges. Pressure-time profiles were obtained using mechanical self-recording pressure gages. The cube-root scaling law for peak pressure was found to be valid within about 1 tunnel diameter; at greater distances, the pressures obtained along direct paths were generally higher than this scaling law would indicate.

The Mouat mine, Nye, Mont., was reopened in 1953 by the American Chrome Co. under a Defense Minerals Production Administration contract. Operations were terminated in 1961 after completion of the contract. Mining methods employed during this period are described in detail, and cost data are presented by years for 1953 through 1959. Ultramafic rocks of the Stillwater complex in Montana contain the largest domestic resource of chromite, and the Mouat mine has been the largest producer. Mine reserves were estimated in 1960 to be about 4.4 million tons containing 22.5 percent Cr203. The chromite deposits occur as a series of overlapping bands or lenses roughly paralleling the steeply dipping layers of the complex. Only two of the chromite layers have proven to be of economic importance. One layer is 2 to 1.6 feet wide; the other is 3 to 8 feet wide. Shrinkage stoping was generally used throughout the mine, but various methods of ore breaking, scope drawing, chute construction, etc., were tested to improve output and lower costs. Long-hole stoping proved to have limited use. Breasting down benches, developed outward from the center of the stope with air-leg drills, was satisfactory only in wider scopes. At the close of operations, the company had standardized the use of lightweight stopers to advance a flat back by breaking from a centrally located face. Mining costs were reduced 47 percent during 7 years of operation.

THE WILLISTON basin is the largest known sedimentary basin on the North. American continent. Two-thirds of this large basin lies within the United States in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Less than 10 years after the first commercial oil discovery in North Dakota in 1951, the petroleum became one of the largest industries in the three-state area. Crude petroleum is now the most valuable mineral resource in the area. In 1960, the basin produced 39 million barrels of worth $100 million at the wellhead. Most of the 137 oil pools covered to date are in Paleozoic carbonates at depths ranging from 3,000 to 13,000 feet. The major producing fields, centered on the Cedar Creek anticline in Montana and the Nesson anticline in North Dakota, produce from depths below 6,000 feet. This report presents descriptions of all phases of the Williston basin petroleum industry, including leasing, exploration, geology, drilling, production, transportation, and refining. Engineering, physical, and production data, maps, and crude petroleum analyses for 137 separate oil pools are included.

Field studies were performed during blasting operations for strip coal mining above the room and pillar workings at Jenny mine in eastern Kentucky. The study is part of the Bureau of Mines program to develop criteria for the proximity of surface blasting to underground mines. Measurements and observations were made to identify physical changes in the mine. No change in the frequency of roof falls or any other indication of apparent damage was noted. Recordings of blast induced vibrations were made using sensors on the roof and floor of the underground mine and at the ground surface. A maximum particle velocity of 17.5 in/sec was recorded on the mine roof. The vibration data were analyzed and comparisons were made between roof vibration levels and those recorded on the mine floor and at the ground surface. Results are compared with previous blast vibration studies. Recommendations are made for further study toward developing criteria.

Two different techniques were wed to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating hardrock mine, Grace Mine, located near Morgantown, Pennsylvania. Diesel-powered haulage equipment is used in this mine, and the electromagnetic noise environment it creates was measured to see how it differs from the environment created by electric-powered haulage equipment. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. Data are recorded using broadband analog magnetic tape and are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise amplitudes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of time to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and in amplitude probability distribution plots.

Boron is an element whose metallurgical possibilities never have been investigated thoroughly, probably because of the difficulties experienced in the preparation of elemental boron and its intermetallic compounds. The southwestern United States contain the world's largest deposits of boron minerals. In general, the mineral is readily available, and mining costs are not excessive. The most important boron mineral of commerce is borax (sodium tetraborate); however, there are large deposits of colemanite (a mineral having the composition represented by 2CaO 3B203 5H20) in Clark County, Nov. This material was worked in times past by converting it to sodium tetraborate. In recent years the deposits have laid idle because of a mere readily available source of borax in the old lake beds of California.

This report describes the development of guidelines for design, inspection and maintenance of automatic couplers. In order to devise the guidelines, performance requirements for automatic couplers were carefully established. This was clone through a comprehensive survey of coupler manufacturers and extensive observation of automatic couplers in service in a broad spectrum of mines. The capability of the couplers to withstand the demands of the mining environment in terms of strength characteristics, gathering range, curve negotiability, and other factors were all carefully evaluated. An analysis of coupler related accidents for the years 1972-1976 was carried out to provide information on the safety and reliability of existing automatic couplers. This formed an important input to the development of the guidelines. It is expected that these guidelines will he useful to coupler manufacturers for establishing designs for improved automatic couplers, and to mine operators for maintaining their couplers in a safe and good operating condition throughout their expected lifetimes. Infrared and displacement studies were made of an unsupported roof in Kaiser Steel Corp.'s York Canyon coal mine, Raton, N. Mex. Monitoring of the roof continued until the roof over the area was caved. Loose slabs in the roof, about 6 inches thick, were detected by means of associated thermal anomalies, using remote-sensing infrared instruments. Displacement measurements taken during the study indicate that roof movement was cyclic in nature; the cycles appear to have been related to the mine work cycle (work days to idle days).

Of the total quantity of secondary copper and zinc that became obsolete in the United States from 19b1 through 1970, more than 11 million tons of copper and 10 million tons of zinc were not recovered. These estimates are based on a study of the flow and recovery of old copper and zinc scrap by consumption end-use. This report describes (1) where copper and zinc are being used; (2) when they become obsolete and available as secondary metal; (3) how they are being collected for recycling; and (4) how much might be recovered from scrap that presently is not being recycled.

Hydraulic transport has been considered as one of the most economical methods in transferring granular materials over relatively long distances. In the natural world, it is used to transport basic material required for the support of life; in industry, it is a method widely adopted for handling materials. But the phenomena of hydraulic transport has not yet been thoroughly understood. As most of them are conditioned by a number of hydraulic and mechanical parameters, of which the basic relationships are not fully known, the traditional approach in relating these parameters to the energy requirement is purely empirical in nature. Empirical formulas, such as that proposed by Durand, (1) only give satisfactory results over a selected range of (particle size)/(pipe diameter) ratios and slurry concentration. When the case is more complicated or when new situations arise, the empirical formulas fail to give good predictory results. In fact, most of these formulas are based upon dimensional analysis, where the underlying physical interaction is not explicitly considered. Apart from the loosely related, non-dimensional groups incorporated in the formulas, there is practically no analytical means for modifying the formula so as to enable it to cope with more complex real physical situations. Although it seems quite remote that a complete rigorous solution to this highly complex problem could be generated in the near future, it is generally recognized (2, 3) that research in this area should be directed to more comprehensive studies of the obscure phenomena. A three phase program evaluated commercial proximity warning devices, developed and designed a microprocessor-based electrostatic field measurement instrument, and utilized this instrument to investigate the electro-static fields about power lines. The Phase I program consisted of test and evaluation of these commercially available proximity devices. The evaluation results were reported in the Phase I report entitled ?Evaluation of Proximity Warning Devices? dated 22 February 1980. The Phase II program resulted in the design and development of a microprocessor-based Distributed Sensor A.C. Electrometer which measures the electrostatic field present at 17 discrete locations along a crane boom. Operator control of the measurement system allows simultaneous electric field measurements from 17 probes, print out of the electric fields measured, and data archiving on magnetic tape for post measurement analysis. Under the Phase III program, electrostatic fields around a crane boom were measured by the instrument at 17 high voltage power lines of various voltages and geometries. The electric field data was processed and plotted versus boom distance from the power line. Analysis of the electric field data indicate that the distances at which a single sensor alarm will activate, vary by a factor of 3 to 1. This is due primarily to variations in boom orientation. The results also indicate that in the case of multiple power lines, a single electrostatic field sensor cannot reliably be used to determine the distance from a power line.

As mine haulage vehicles become larger, the danger to a driver during a fire emergency is increased by the greater height of the cab above ground. Also, property damage due to fires on bigger trucks can be substantial. To solve this problem, the Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines, through two research and development contracts with FMC Corporation, San Jose, California, has developed two reasonably priced, reliable automatic fire sensing and suppression prototype systems for large haulage vehicles. At the onset of the large mobile equipment fire protection contract effort, it was learned that fires were frequently experienced in open-pit mine haulage equipment, especially large trucks. As the size of equipment has grown, so has the hazard presented to an operator forced to leave his truck in a hurry when fire breaks out and his normal path to the ground is blocked by flames. His only recourse is to jump from the cab platform to the ground, and the one-story drop of 10 feet or more can severely injure him. It is with these factors in mind that a program was undertaken to provide a fire detection and extinguishing capability tor the large mobile equipment, especially trucks, used in open pit mines.

Sales of diesel fuel in the United States during the post year and a half have increased greatly. In 1955 over 174 million barrels were sold of which 80 million (or 46 percent), were used by the railroads, and over 44 million barrels (25 ½ percent) of the fuel were used in trucks, busses, tractors, and heavy moving equipment. Vessels (12 percent), industry (9 ½ ), the military forces (4 ½ ), power plants (2), and oil companies (1/2 percent) account for the remainder. 2/ Dally deliveries of diesel type fuel from refineries averaged over 16,750 barrels during the first six months of 1956 in comparison with 15, 250 barrels during the corresponding period of 1955. 3/ Information on the properties of diesel fuel is very important to the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers. To supply such information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of diesel fuel oil produced in refineries in this country.

Following is a brief resume of the Division's activities that have had a favorable effect on health, safety, and the reduction of injuries at coal mines: 1. The Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States was issued originally by the Director of the Bureau of Mines on July 24, 1946, after consulting with management and labor representatives of the coal-mining industry. The code has been used by Federal coal-mine inspectors while inspecting bituminous-coal and lignite mines as a basis for determining the existence of unhealthful and unsafe conditions and practices in these mines. A revised code was issued by the Secretary of the Interior on October 8, 1953, after further consultations with representatives of management and mine workers and was incorporated by reference in the 1952 and subsequent bituminous-coal wage agreements. The agreement of May 29, 1946, between the Secretary of the Interior, acting as Coal Mines Administrator under authority of Executive Order 9728, and the United Mine Workers of America, covering bituminous-coal and lignite mines in Government possession, charged Federal coal-mine inspectors with the responsibility of making periodic investigations of the mines and reporting to the Coal Mines Administrator any violations of the Federal Mine Safety Code. Federal coal-mine inspectors also had temporary authority to close mines found to be imminently dangerous, but such authority under Executive Order 9728 was removed on June 30, 1947, when Government control of the mines was terminated.

Geologic investigation of a mineralized zone in eastern Alabama indicates that large quantities of talc and soapstone are scattered over a wide area close to the surface. Laboratory experiments show that this material may be upgraded to a high-quality talc. A market survey indicates that the talc deposits may be of current and long-range interest. The anthophyllite asbestos which is associated with the talc does not appear to occur in sufficient quantities to be considered as a primary commercial source.

This report analyzes electrical accident data in the metal/non-metal mining industry. Accidents are categorized to determine their root causes. Special attention is given to accidents associated with inadequate or defective grounding of mine power systems. Recommendations are made concerning proper grounding practice, especially for dredges and for quarries in hard rock or sand. The costs of instituting the recommended practices are estimated for model mine power systems which are based on field data obtained from 37 mines and several electrical contractors. The expected benefits of various suggested safety practices are also estimated.

In a previous report,6/ results were given that showed the amount of natural ventilation in a manhole having a capacity of 74.1 cubic feet when the number of ventilation openings in the cover was varied from no openings to a maximum of 48. The result s showed that the ventilation (air changes per day) in the manhole was proportional to the area of the openings in the cover, and also that the number or area of the openings was the factor that chiefly affected the ventilation.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of a program to develop small, rugged mechanical dust collectors (scrubbers) with high dust collection efficiency and low energy comsumption for controlling dust in coal mining operations. All of the scrubbers described are similar in configuration and are powered by 6-hp, 2,000-ft3/min vane axial fans. Air pressure differential is less than 6 inches water column. Height of the scrubbers? including fan is less than 14 inches, width is less than 16 inches, and length is less than 45 inches. The flooded fibrous-bed scrubber achieved respirable (less than approximatey 7 µm) dust collection efficiencies of 95 percent. The small-diameter-cyclone scrubbers showed about 92 percent efficiency and can be best where excess water is a problem. The wetted brush scrubber showed 88 percent efficiency at low cost, and the wetted fan scrubber showed a slightly lower efficiency (87 percent) but offered the smallest size and cost. A suitable water droplet eliminator is described.

THE BUREAU OF MINES is investigating methods for upgrading tar produced by the low-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal. This survey was undertaken to compile information needed for identifying the ether constituents of low-temperature tar. Physical properties are listed for 1,024 aromatic ethers. The compounds include cyclic and noncyclic, polyfunctional and monofunctional ethers with oxygen joined directly to either one or two aromatic rings. Alkyl groups up through butyl are included. The compounds are divided into 37 groups ranging in complexity from alkoxybenzenes to dibenzopyrans. Compounds containing aromatic ether groups are important constituents of the neutral oxygen components of low-temperature tar. For example, at Morgantown, W. Va., the Bureau of Mines has identified and determined the amounts of benzofuran, 2-, 3-, 5-, 6-, and 7 -methylbenzofuran, diphenyl ether, dibenzofuran, 2,3-dimethyldibenzofuran, and two other dimethyl-dibenzofurans in the neutral oil from a low-temperature bituminous coal tar (103, 104).3
