Discomfort, annoyance, or interference with activities due to exposure to vibration is only expected if the vibration exceeds the threshold for the perception of vibration. When there is more than one vibration input to the body (e.g. at the hands, seat and feet), the sensation is first experienced at the location with greatest sensitivity. Knowledge of differences in the thresholds of perception for vibration at the hand, seat, and feet should assist the identification of sources of discomfort caused by vibration. Perception thresholds for vibration have been determined in several studies, but only a few studies have investigated perception thresholds in the horizontal direction for hand-transmitted vibration 1, 6 or whole-body vibration 4-5, and there has been little consideration of perception thresholds for the foot resting on a vibrating surface. This study determines absolute thresholds for the perception of sinusoidal lateral vibration, examining the effect of vibration frequency (8 to 315 Hz for the hand and foot; 2 to 315 Hz for the seat) and the effect of input location (the hand, the seat and the foot). Methods Three groups of twelve males aged between 20 and 29 years participated in the experiment. Subjects in each group attended an experiment to determine perception thresholds for lateral vibration via either a rigid handlebar (30 mm diameter) at the left hand (left hand), or a rigid contoured seat (250 mm x 150 mm), or a footrest at the left foot (30.5 mm x 10.5 mm with 10-degree inclination). For the non-exposed hand (right hand) or foot (right foot), a stationary handle and footrest with the same dimensions as the vibrating handle and footrest were provided so that the same body posture was adopted among the three groups of subjects. An up-down (staircase) algorithm was employed to determine thresholds in conjunction with a three-down one-up rule. A single test stimulus (2.0 seconds) was presented with a cue light illuminated during this period. The task of the subjects was to indicate whether they perceived the vibration stimulus or not. The threshold was calculated from the mean of the last two peaks and the last two troughs, omitting the first two reversals. Results The median absolute thresholds of the 12 subjects determined at each frequency for the hand, seat and foot are shown in Figure 1. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers have investigated seat design issues for the occupants and operators of underground mine transport vehicles relative to whole-body vibration (WBV) and mechanical shock. Considering the ergonomic and engineering improvements made to underground mine shuttle car seats, this study has focused on reducing injury risk by improving seating on transport vehicles such as scoops, mantrips, personnel carriers, and rail-mounted locomotives. Similarly, proposed seat design improvements included layering of various types of viscoelastic foam padding to isolate vehicle occupants and operators from adverse health effects of jarring/jolting exposure. This paper discusses the results obtained from laboratory vibration testing of new seat padding materials in seven configurations at the NIOSH – Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) showing that careful use of configuration and materials can reduce the operator’s exposure to WBV. In addition, results for four mine transport vehicles are presented from field data collection efforts at a Southwestern Pennsylvania mine showing that a NIOSH based design does reduce the operator’s exposure to WBV. Finally, the authors discuss efforts to develop and field test seat padding interventions using new padding materials and configurations based on the laboratory test results [The findings and conclusions in this report are those of the author(s) and do not represent the views of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.]

This Bureau of Mines report presents the results of tracer gas studies conducted at three facilities where bagger hoods had been installed several years ago to remove airborne silica dust from the vicinity of the bagging operator. The studies indicated that for optimum benefits makeup air must be evenly dispersed, the hood enclosures and duct systems must be as airtight as possible, the average intake air velocity of each hood should be at least 200 fpm, and the hoods and duct systems must be properly maintained.

These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 829), to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Minerals Information activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

This report describes the development and underground operation of a semi-automatic, raise climber, Man and Supply Hoist System designed for stope access in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Demonstrated capabilities of the system include a 4000-lb payload capacity, control from the traveling cage and from up to five remote stations, operating in vertical or inclined raises 5 ft in diameter and up to 300 ft in length and a travel speed of 50 ft/min. The 'system has the capability of operating in crooked raises because the conveyance climbs two stationary wire ropes suspended down the raise. The drive unit is electrically powered with power and control signals supplied to the drive unit through an armored cable also suspended down the raise. The system has been designed for portability, ease of installation and minimum raise development. The system can be installed by two men in five shifts. The hoist has been demonstrated successfully in two underground applications. The first demonstration was in a 5-ft diam, 60 deg inclined raise over a 2-month period. The second demonstration utilized a vertical 5-ft diam borehole to access a blast-hole stoping area. The system successfully provided two shift-a-day service over a 7-month duration demonstration. This report provides a detailed description of the hoist design and its demonstrated performance in two mine applications.

Bitumninous and semianthracite coal reserves underlie about 1,400 square miles of Arkansas, less than 2.7 percent of the state's total area. These deposits, located near the western border, contain an estimated 2.2 billion tons, of which about half are recoverable. This represents less than one-tenth of one percent of the national reserves. Most of the commercial coal is mined from thin beds that are at least 14 inches thick. In some locations, however, the coal beds can be as much as eight feet thick. Lignite was mined in southern Arkansas before the Civil War. Current estimates indicate that the reserves may be as high as 9 billion tons, which could be used in the state's coal-fired electric generating plants; however, these deposits are not being mined at present. Because many coal operations in Arkansas are small and the demand for coal is unsteady, the industry employs fewer than 25 miners on a daily basis. Arkansas gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved November 21,1980, subject to the correction of four minor program deficiencies. The regulatory program was fully approved January 22, 1982. Authority of the state to administer its Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation Program was granted upon approval of the Arkansas Reclamation Plan on May 2, 1983. Arkansas was the first state to assume responsibility for abandoned mine land emergency projects when its Reclamation Plan was approved.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to provide technical information needed to devise waste management plans for the processing of manganese nodules. Studies included summary descriptions of Pacific manganese nodules, process options and flowsheets, methods for characterizing nodules and their tailings, and results of analyses of laboratory and pilot-plant generated tailings. This information is the result of a cooperative research effort of the Bureau of Mines and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with NOAA providing funding and the Bureau conducting the research. A summary of the extensive literature review is provided for manganese nodule mineralogy, chemistry, processing techniques, and methods of analyses. Characterizations and analyses of laboratory-generated tailings and slags are given, as well as the results of the leaching studies on these waste materials. Leachability was determined by three standard leachate tests- the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) extraction procedure (EP) toxicity test, the American Society for Testing and Materials shake extraction test, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-EPA seawater elutriant test. While the wastes generated in the laboratory may not be entirely representative of those to be generated in full-scale plants, results of these studies provide a positive indication that commercial recovery of cobalt, copper, manganese, and nickel from manganese nodules would be environmentally acceptable.

Standing crib supports have been applied in underground mining programs to resist large roof movements and sustain high-loads. The strength and deformation capability of these systems has been documented under both laboratory and field conditions. The parameter that has not been examined and is not well understood is the effect that a crib or other types of standing support has on the primary and secondary bolting systems. A crib support system with low system stiffness may allow large amounts of closure and deformation and cause the bolting systems to yield or even fail. Conversely, cribs or standing support that are too stiff may experience brittle or buckling failures, negating the advantage of the intrinsic supports previously installed. Utilizing a combination of field measurements and 3-dimensional finite element modeling techniques, the relationship between system stiffness and the subsequent performance of the installed bolting system is evaluated. Additionally, a simple method for calculating the combined system stiffness for standing supports, when using materials with different strengths such as steel, concrete, wood, etc., is presented.

"INTRODUCTION This report deals with a comparatively simple application of some of the engineering principles involved in the evaluation, installation, and operation of air- or gas-injection projects and well-clean-out and repair methods to increase the producing rates of oil wells in partly depleted pools during the war. The methods suggested for developing gas-injection projects take into consideration that in general no new wells will be drilled because of wartime restrictions of equipment and manpower and that only existing wells and second-hand machinery will be used. Because air will be employed as the injection medium in secondary-recovery operations where natural gas is scarce and expensive, the disadvantages and hazards accompanying, its use are discussed. Engineering techniques recognized as best modern practice are discussed in relation to the effect of simple air-injection development of properties on postwar operations and Probable ultimate recovery of oil. The report is an introduction to where, when, why, and how an air-injection project should be installed and operated; it is not intended to be an engineering manual for technical guidance in the selection, development, and operation of simulative methods of oil recovery.The report is intended mainly for these thousands of operators in the Appalachian region owning a few wells prodding small quantities or oil daily. Many such operators are anxious to increase their production rates by simulative means and to rehabilitate their wells so that they will produce more oil to help win the war but, in general, are unfamiliar with secondary-recovery operations and cannot afford to hire technical assistance."

ackleg rock drills are widely used in the mining industry and are known to generate high levels of hand-arm vibration which contribute to the development of the hand-arm vibration syndrome for exposed miners.1-3 To reduce the vibration levels, a prototype of an antivibration handle was developed as part of a previous study.4 To provide some bench marking for this handle prototype and to follow the evolution of its performance over time, a test bench was developed to characterize the vibration emission values of jackleg drills under controlled operating conditions. As the current ISO 8662 series of standards could not apply directly to this type of tool, there was a need to design and validate a test bench to evaluate the vibration emission values of jackleg drills, while taking into account the conditions specific to the operation of this type of tool. Methods A test bench including an energy absorber, was developed for testing jackleg drills based on the ISO 8662-3 standard 5. The energy absorber was bolted to a 3300 kg concrete block to ensure tool stability. A pictorial view of the device is given in Figure 1. For validation purposes, acceleration measurements at the handle of a conventional jackleg drill were taken simultaneously along the three axes (xh, yh and zh) in an underground rock drilling operation as well as on the test bench. The handle accelerations were measured for three different jackleg angles (13º, 28º and 43º) determined with respect to the floor. Moreover, each measurement was repeated at least three times to asses the data repeatability. [ ] Results As a preliminary validation of the test bench, Figure 2 provides a comparison of the frequency weighted rms acceleration spectrum measured along the zh-axis, for both underground drilling and operation on the test bench (28º jackleg angle in both cases). It is shown that the vibration measured on the handle of a jackleg drill operating on the test bench is representative of that recorded during typical rock drilling operations, despite the fact that some harmonics of the percussion frequencies are generated with a higher amplitude on the test bench. An earlier Bureau of Mines report4 provided low-temperature heat-capacity and entropy data for three sodium vanadates. This report continues the study of vanadates by presenting analogous data for three crystalline calcium vanadates - calcium metavanadate (CaV206), calcium pyrovanadate (Ca2V2O7), and calcium orthovanadate (Ca3V208). No similar data for these compounds have been published previously. MATERIALS All three vanadate samples were prepared by the Bureau of Mines by heating stoichiometric mixtures of reagent-grade calcium carbonate and vanadium pentoxide.5 Calcium metavanadate was prepared at 610° to 660° C. A stoichiometric mixture was heated for 17 days with intervening grindings, mixings, and adjustments of composition, as shown necessary by chemical analysis. The final analysis gave calcium oxide, 23.48 pct. (theoretical, 23.57 pct.) and vanadium pentoxide, 76.32 pct. (theoretical, 76.43 pct.). The sample also contained 0.11 pct. acid-insoluble matter. The X-ray diffracton pattern showed no lines of free calcium or vanadium oxides. No X-ray diffraction patterns were found in the literature for any of these substances.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study intended to determine if horizontal stress trends exist and if the stresses can be projected for improved mine design in a selected coalfield. The horizontal stresses were determined in three mines in the Yampa Coalfield and one mine in the adjacent Danforth Hills Coalfield of northwestern Colorado. Stresses were determined from stress-relief measurements using a three-component borehole deformation gauge and overcoring techniques developed by the Bureau. A least-squares method of calculating the average rock stress components in the horizontal plane was performed. Physical properties of the rock from the test sites are also included. For the Yampa Coalfield, the maximum horizontal compressive stress in the floor ranged from 363 to 1,956 psi, and the maximum horizontal compressive stress in the roof ranged from 235 to 875 psi. For the Dan-forth Hills Coalfield, the maximum horizontal compressive stress in the floor ranged from 360 to 1,494 psi, and the maximum horizontal compres-sive stress in the roof was 1,033 psi. Results indicated a trend of low horizontal stresses in the Yampa Coalfield that have not impacted ground control conditions in mines less than 1,000 ft deep.

Introduction Research has shown that when an emergency occurs, work-ers often do not get the information they need to take appropriate action. Important information about incidents is either not com-municated effectively or not at all to those affected by the event. The "Emergency Communication Triangle" safety talk focuses on the content of emergency warning messages. It presents a procedure using mental cues that can be used by senders and receivers of emergency warnings. The talk includes graphics for use during the presentation, as well as references for more information. Background Interviews with 48 miners who had escaped one of three different underground mine fires revealed that warning information provided to them was inadequate. Either insufficient information was provided to miners inby the fire areas or they failed to ask the questions needed to let them plan and execute an effective escape. Most of the miners who evacuated from these three mines did not have information that would allow them to make decisions about efficient escapes. The communication breakdown came from two directions: (1) the individuals providing the warning did not offer details about the situations even though some were known and (2) the individuals who received the warnings did not ask for clarification of the situation. The lack of information allowed miners to continue attempting to place cues into normal frameworks after they should have evaluated the situation as abnormal and threatening. The uncertainty created by the lack of information influenced their decision-making and therefore their actions. Approach Researchers at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory have developed a training intervention that can be used by senders and receivers of warnings during a mine emergency. This material was developed for use in short safety training sessions such as start-of-shift safety talks. The information can be presented in about 15 minutes. Although the illustrations were taken from the underground coal mining industry, the training can be tailored to any work setting by substituting appropriate examples. How It Works During the safety talk, miners learn about the six categories of critical information that should be provided during emergency communications: Who, Where, What, Miners, Event, and Response. • Who: When reporting an emergency or receiving a warning, the first thing a miner must do is identify himself or herself. This is important because people react differently based on who gives them information. • Where: Giving or finding out the location of the problem is important. Of the 48 miners interviewed about their escape, only 2 knew where the fire was located. However, this information was known by either the dispatcher or the person who discovered the fire. • What: Miners must tell or ask exactly what is happening. At one mine fire, miners near the phone heard the message to evacuate and went to gather the others on their crew. One worker shouted to a machine operator: "Come on down to the mantrip. We're going out." Because it was close to quitting time, the machine operator thought they were just leaving the section a little early and went through his normal end-of-shift routine, wasting valuable time. After giving or obtaining the three initial pieces of critical information, miners can then give or obtain details about the response in progress. • Miners: Is anyone hurt? Has everyone been accounted for? When and where was a missing person last seen?
