Thermodynamic values for scandium and its compounds are very sparse. This is evident upon examination of any of the commonly used compilations of thermodynamic data. For example, National Bureau of Standards Circular 5004 lists only four heat of formation values, two free energy of formation values, and four heat-capacity values for scandium compounds. The entropy of crystalline scandium is one of the most fundamental values that has been lacking. This Bureau of Mines paper reports heat-capacity data for scandium metal in the temperature range from 50° to 298° K., together with the entropy value at 298.15° K. derived from these data through application of the third law of thermodynamics.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an overcore stress measurement on the 5300 level of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID, to investigate the stress regime around an experimental stope in a rock-burst-prone mine. The result indicated a stress field with unexpected magnitude and orientation [s 1 ?135 MPa (19,600 psi) oriented S 80° W). An unusual amount of rock-burst activity was encountered during subsequent excavation. A careful review of the overcore data suggested the overcore strain measurements were valid. Moreover, concentrated rock-burst activity suggested that the measured stress field did exist, but was localized and therefore did not represent the far-field in situ stress field.

The absorbed power (PAbs) has been suggested as a better measure of human responses to whole-body vibration, since it relates to the cumulative energy dissipated by the body exposed over a given duration. Moreover, unlike the other measures, the PAbs can adequately account for the intensity of exposure. Although, the vast majority of off-road vehicles impose considerably severe vibration along the horizontal axes, the vast majority of studies on biodynamic response characterization consider only vertical vibration. Only a few studies have reported PAbs responses of the seated human body exposed to horizontal vibration and the major contributing factors [1]. This study aims to characterize the PAbs responses of seated human subjects to horizontal (uncoupled x- and y-axis) vibration as functions of the vibration intensity, subject mass, seat height and the, type of back support. Methods Experiments were conducted using a rigid seat with an adjustable backrest inclination and seat height. The seat was installed on a horizontal vibration simulator and the forces at the seat base and the backrest were measured by three-axis force plates. Two single-axis accelerometers were installed on the seat back and the platform, oriented along the axis of motion. The experiments were performed using three different seat heights (350, 390 and 410 mm), back support conditions (NB- no back support and sitting erect; Wb0- Upper body supported against a vertical back support; and WbA- back supported against an inclined backrest, while sitting relaxed) and three different magnitudes of broad band excitations in the 0.5-10 Hz frequency range (0.25, 0.5 and 1 m/s2 rms acceleration under x-axis and y-axis, applied independently). A total of 8 healthy adult male volunteers with total body mass ranging from 59.4 kg to 92 kg and aged between 21-51 years took part in the experiments. The subjects were seated with their hands in lap, and feet supported on the moving platform for each posture. Each measurement was repeated 2 times, while the data were analysed using a bandwidth of 50 Hz and frequency resolution of 0.0625 Hz. "INTRODUCTION The Ahles iron mine, also known as the Pequest mine, in Warren County, N. J., was operated continuously for 15 years and was still in ore when it closed in 1916.Tie property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in March 1943. 3/ This examination led to an investigation of the deposits by the Bureau by diamond drilling two holes under the old workings to determine whether the extends downward.This report describes the work done at the Ahles mine by the Bureau and presents the data obtained.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The U.S. Bureau of Mines formulated a new mathematical model to characterize iron oxidation. The new model is intended to replace the currently used model, recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for most acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment applications. The new model was evaluated in a series of five synthetic AMD treatment tests. The initial ferrous iron concentrations ranged from 800 to 2,400 mg/L. In these tests, the Bureau model underpredicted the measured ferrous iron oxidation rates by a range of 3.24 to 8.03 pct. This was considered to be in close agreement after consideration of experimental error. The model proposed by the EPA was also evaluated using the same test data. The EPA model underpredicted the oxidation rates by a range of 77 to 100 pct in four tests and overpredicted by 19 pct in one test. The model formulated by the Bureau expresses that the rate of iron oxidation is a function of a treatment system's oxygen transfer efficiency and is independent of ferrous iron concentration when treated to near-neutral pH's. A new test method for evaluating oxygen transfer in flow-through reactors is also described.

Gold mining is a subject that not only appeals to the popular imagination but has vital importance to the world's economic structure. However, a discussion of the use of gold as a medium of exchange, and a basis for credit between nations and for monetary systems is not within the scope of this paper. The importance of gold in carrying on the commerce of the world, the present supply and rate of production, the probable trend of future production, the probable future requirements, and related subjects have recently received much attention from bankers and economists, and many articles on these subjects have been published. During slack periods of base-metal production due to falling prices, accompanied by scaling down of base-metal mining operations and often by the closing down of at least some mines, there usually result revival of interest in gold mining, search for previously undiscovered deposits, and reopening of some old gold mines.

Under a cooperative agreement, the Bureau of Mines, Magma Copper Co., and ASARCO, Inc., tested backfilled ground support systems at t.wo elevations in Magma's San Manuel, AZ, mine. The tests were mainly for guidance in designing the loading crosscuts of the new ASARCO Sacaton underground mine. Two-piece, wide-flange steel sets for 8-by 8-ft (2.44-by 2.44-m) and 11-by II-ft (3.36-by 3.36-m) openings were designed. Set spacing was 3 ft (0.91 m) and 5 ft (1.52 m), respectively. After erection, the sets were lagged with various test materials. The void between the lining and the ground was backfilled with sand and pea gravel. Instruments measuring strain (used to determine changes in stress) were placed beneath the sets and in the backfill. Results indicate the backfilled sets in the smaller drift (2315 grizzly level, panels 6 and 7) of 8-by 8-ft (2.44-by 2.44-m) cross section are a viable permanent support system, lower in cost than the standard formed concrete. Results are inconclusive in 2615 grizzly level, panels 5 and 6, where wide-flange steel sets were used with 5-ft (1.52-m) long concrete gob lagging of T-design.

This report is Volume I of a three volume final report on the micro-seismic monitoring of a longwall coal mine. Volume I deals for the most part with the detailed aspects of the microseismic field study itself, however, brief references are made to other secondary studies described in Volumes II and III. During this field study a mobile microseismic monitoring facility and associated transducers were employed to detect and record microseismic activity above a longwall panel at Greenwich Colleries, Barnesboro, Pennsylvania. The fundamental objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate the feasibility of detecting microseismic activity originating from longwall mining operations using an approximately planar, near-surface, geophone array installed above the longwall and (2) to attempt to locate the sources of the various microseismic events. This investigation has proven that, using the techniques developed it is possible to detect microseismic events at depths of more than 400 ft and at horizontal distances in excess of 800 ft from the source. The majority of the observed events were found to have frequencies on the order of 10 to 100 Hz, and particle velocities of 50 to 300 µips. When a suitable velocity model was utilized, most of the events located were computed to be within ±100 ft vertically of the coal seam and ±50 ft horizontally of the longwall face. The results of the overall research project suggest that additional research should be undertaken in a number of associated areas.

The proper disposition of phosphatic clays has been the subject of research and debated for years by phosphate producers, State and Federal research agencies, regulatory authorities, and environmentalists. To date, no "universal" solution exists for the ultimate disposl of phosphatic clays. This Bureau of Mines report examines the state of conventional clay disposal technology and reviews the technical progress of innovative alternatives. Twenty impoundment sites were investigated by the Bureau of Mines using geotechnical methods and laboratory analysis of cored samples. In addition, quasi-static cone penetrometer soundings were conducted to define clay and/or sand-clay interfaces en masse. Samples of the top, middle, and bottom hole segments were obtained at each station for laboratory studies of clay densities, pore fluids, plasticity, and mineralogical properties. The results of this study support the continued use of initial clay settling impoundments but emphasize the need for "in-line" systems to reduce the initial volumes of plant-generated phosphatic clays. The effective use of sand tailings is also encouraged to promote further consolidation of clays via self-weight stressing, sand-clay admixtures, and/or surcharging sand caps.

Exploration of hidden mineral deposits becomes increasingly important as known ore reserves are depleted. The primary objective in any exploratory program is to obtain enough reliable information to evaluate accurately the potential of the mineral deposit. Constant improvement in equipment and technique has established drilling as one of the most valuable methods of exploration. This paper presents the results of studies of several drilling methods currently used in the search for uranium deposits in sedimentary formations from surface drill sites. Also presented is a description of drilling with wire-line equipment from an underground location in metamorphic rocks. The studies were conducted in the Colorado Plateau area and in northwestern New Mexico and Wyoming. Statements of a general nature pertain to conditions or situations existent in those areas.

Appendix A is an abridged extract of the report prepared by the Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Society of Idaho, and presents the results of their one-year study to evaluate the feasibility of disposing mill tailings by landfill construction. Appendix B describes the field and laboratory testing program completed by RDM to assess the effectiveness of a soil (slimes) liner as a means of seepage control to reduce the introduction of contaminants into the local ground water regime. Appendix C presents a summary of a thesis by Lawrence Martin on the analysis of the acid production potential of mill tailings, and the results of geotechnical testing of mill tailings completed by ROM. Appendix D describes potential landfill sites identified within the study area, the development of these sites to meet the present needs of the mining industry and the future requirements of the community is described. Appendix E summarizes the main legislation impacting on tailings disposal. Appendix F discusses the environmental and socio-economic factors that should be considered.

The Bureau of Mines determined demonstrated tin resources and costs associated with tin production in order to evaluate the potential for tin production from 18 market economy countries (MEC's). Data were collected from tin producers, in most cases during on-site visits. The analyses evaluated the relative economic and resource position of 146 mines, deposits, or regions in January 1984 dollars. The demonstrated resource of recoverable tin within the nations studied is approximately 2.8 million metric tons (mt). Of this total, over 73 pct is recoverable from the Southeast Asian countries of Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, which in 1983 accounted for almost 60 pct of the world's tin production. Brazil has joined the Southeast Asian countries as a major low-cost, high-volume supplier of tin and is likely to continue to expand its production. Given the 1984 market structure, over 60 pct of the tin in demonstrated resources was economically recoverable. Historically, the International Tin Council (ITC) has helped maintain relatively stable tin prices through a buffer stock and sales quotas. In late 1985, exhaustion of buffer stock funds led to suspension of tin trading on the world's major tin metal exchanges.

"INTRODUCTION This report embodies the results of a detailed statistical microscopic examination of the ore and the mill products of the Silver King Coalition Mines Co., Park City, Utah.The study was conducted under the joint auspices of the United States Bureau of mines is cooperation with the University of Utah at Salt Lake City, Utah. The work was done in the cooperative Microscopic Service Laboratory, which was equipped by contributions from the following companies: Utah Copper Co., International Smelting & Refining Co., American Smelting & Refining Co., United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co., Tintic Standard Mining Co., Silver King Coalition Mines Co., and Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co. The salaries and the other costs involved in operation of the laboratory were met by contributions from certain supporting companies. This report 3/gives the results of a reconnaissance of the mining districts in Lander County, Nev., made from March 29 to April 20 and from May 9 to May 21, 1938, during which virtually all of the mining districts n the county were visited. No attempt has been made to include in this report all the mines and prospects in the various mining districts, and it should be stated that whether or not a property is mentioned herein has no. bearing on its merits. The report rovers the situation of the various districts, types of ore deposits, ownership and description of mines and prospects, information on past and current activity, and other information of economic interest likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. The names of the various districts mentioned are those generally used when they were organized for purposes of record and regulation. When originally organized, the districts embraced large areas with no well-defined boundaries, so that the names have little geographical significance.

"INTRODUCTION As a part of the program of investigation of domestic sources of manganese ore, mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines obtained and examined samples of ore from six properties in the vicinity of Pioche, Lincoln County, Nev., and from one property near Caliente, Lincoln County, Nev. As the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable for the direct production of ferromanganese, their amenability to concentration by ore-dressing methods was investigated.In general, the Pioche ores had a low manganese content and, owing to extremely intimate association of manganese minerals with iron oxide and nonmetallic gangue, were refractory to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Only two samples (Zero Gap and Wheeler ores) were amenable to the production of concentrates that would sinter to a marketable plus 35-percent manganese grade. The Prince Consolidated and Ely Valley No. 1.ores were roasted and sintered to produce lead-silver-zinc fumes. The residues were of possible value as manganiferous iron ore. No marketable manganese products were made from Calton semi-oxidized ore, but over 80 percent recoveries of lead, silver, and zinc were made by bulk sulfide flotation followed by Diming of the sulfide concentrate. No satisfactory results were obtained by treatment of Golden Eagle and Ely Valley No. 2 ores.The Cudverwell ore was amenable to the production of high-grade manganese concentrates by ore-drssing methods. However, fine grinding was required to effect mineral liberation, and loss of manganese as slime limited the mangenese recoveries obtainable.In the coarse of the investigations, many data were obtained and compiled, but for the sake of brevity, several data, of secondary importance have been omitted or condensed, and only the tests giving the more promising results are discussed in detail. For convenience, the report has been divided into two parts, one opertaining to the Pioche ores and the other summarzing results obtained by testing Culverwell ore."

Stability analyses of fractured and faulted rock masses require delineation of the position, extent, and orientation of geologic discontinuities. The size of the smallest active discontinuity that may potentially be resolved using the spatial distribution of microseismic event locations is Limited by the accuracy and precision of the location methods. At a hard-rock mine in the Coeur D'Alene mining district of northern Idaho, two data sets consisting of calibration blast signals from a known source site and origin time and microseismic event signals were recorded using a stope-wide accelerometer array. These seismic signals are used to quantify various sources of error in event location. Five factors influencing source location errors are examined in this U.S. Bureau of Mines study: (1) biases of the numerical source location techniques, (2) receiver array geometries, (3) uncertainties in receiver positions, (4) errors in picking arrival times, and (5) uncertainties in seismic velocity structure, including the effect of mine openings. In addition, synthetic data (accelerometer positions, travel-time picks and wave velocity) are used to determine the effect of known systematic and random errors on source location calculations. It is shown that the commonly accepted association of minimum travel-time residuals with the best location solution does not necessarily hold true when there is a systematic error in seismic velocity. Recommendations are made for increasing the accuracy and precision of locations of microseismic events detected under similar field conditions.

The Boston Consolidated mine is situated in the Bingham mining district, Salt Lake County; Utah (fig. 1). The property has had a noteworthy production of cupriferous, gold-bearing, pyritic ore in addition to lead ore. The Bureau of Mines established a diamond-drilling development project on the property in September 1943 with the primary objective of determining the continuity of a mineralized zone in the Commercial limestone below and to the northeast of the 800-foot level (fig.2). Examination of the geologic feature at the property previous to drilling indicated that the mineralized limestone horizon would continue belay the 800-foot level, but with a flatter dip than disclosed above this level. During the project period, 36 holes totaling 4,001 feet were drilled from underground stations outlining the zone below the 800-foot level (figs. 2 and 3).

Mineral resources of the Rice Valley Wilderness Study Area (WSA), in the Mojave Desert of southeastern California, were investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey during 1980. The study consisted of an examination of mines, prospects, and mineralized areas by the Bureau: of Mines and geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations by the Geological Survey. Little indicated potential for the presence of mineral resources exists in the valley floor segment of the study area. The Big Maria Mountains section of the study area has some potential for mineral resource development. Decorative building stone from both bedded quartzite deposits and weathered limestone surface rubble (driftwood stone) has been produced from the Big Maria Mountains segment of the study area. Total production is unrecorded but probably small. A 700,000 ton (640,000 t) quartzite resource was inferred and 4,500 tons (4,100 t) of driftwood stone within the study area was estimated. A relatively pure limestone deposit inside the study area contains an inferred resource of 14 million tons (13 million t). One prospect suggests a potential for the presence of manganese resources although none were estimated. The likelihood of discovering oil, gas, coal, uranium or geothermal energy is low; potential sources are not known to exist.

The Ludwigshafen and Oppau plants are largely independent I. G. factories situated some 23 miles apart on the west bank of the Rhine facing lannheim. The former factory is a general organic chemical works specializing in dyes, dye intermediates, plastics and synthetic rubber,. while the latter is a heavy organic chemical factory producing ammonia, methanol, higher alcohols and their derivatives. Before the war much of the I. G. research and development work was carried out at Ludwigs- hafen; in particular the high pressure research section directed by Dr. Mathias Pier played a very active part in all hydrogenation developments. Apart from the possibility that a full scale hydrogenation or Fischer Tropsch plant had been erected at Ludwigshafen/Oppau during the war, the main objectives of an oil team investigation were: - (a) To obtain from Dr. Pier and his staff an advance general picture of German fuel production processes. (b) To study the fuel developments still in the research and pilot plant stage. (c) To examine any new developments in hydrogen or synthesis gas manufacture. (d) To look for new processes for production of high anti-knock fuel constituents and for new fuel additives. (e) To investigate new chemical syntheses based on raw materials obtainable from oil. The Ludwigshafen and Oppau factories were first visited by the large team listed in Appendix A during the period 25-31st March. The investigation revealed that no large plant for synthetic fuels or lubricants had been operated at this target. All the important members of the Fuel Research Section staff had been evacuated to Heidelberg and information on the work of this department was therefore limited to that contained in seized documents, the greater part of which have still to be examined in detail. Valuable information on synthesis gas production from hydrocarbon gases was obtained as well as interesting data on a num- ber of chemical syntheses. Two members of the above team Holroyd and Faragher accompan- ied by Major Tilley (interrogator) went on to Heidelberg, contacted Dr. Pier and the chief members of his staff on April 1st and obtained from them the hydrogenation information given later in the body of the report. Later, after visiting Leuna, Holroyd, Faragher and Ellis paid a second visit to Heidelberg and to Ludwigshafen/Oppau on 27th-30th May to check a number of details, particularly with respect to hydrogenation costs, and to obtain information on the pressure.conversion of water gas to hydrogen and on the manufacture of Wickel pressure vessels.
