A research program to aid development of better petroleum-recovery technology is in progress at the Appalachian Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, Morgantown, W. Va. The work is part of the overall effort of the Federal Bureau of Mines to effect true conservation of the Nation's natural resources. Knowledge of the magnitude of the interstitial water content of oil-bearing formations is important to petroleum-reservoir engineers because of the influence of water on fluid flow during oil production and because of the significance of water volume in oil-reserve evaluation. Such information on Appalachian oil-bearing formations is needed to aid in planning secondary oil-recovery projects. Generally, the interstitial water content of oil sands can be estimated by one or more of the following methods: Analysis of cores obtained with oil-base drilling fluid, electric logging, restored-state or capillary-pressure tests, centrifuge tests, evaporation tests, or mercury-injection tests.

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical purposes depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, Be well as the amount of available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. The selection of coal beds in Harlan County, Ky., for coking tests was based, in part, on recent studies of coal reserves by Wallace,3/ who estimated the recoverable reserves in beds 28 inches or more thick, in tons, as follows:

The Claim Point chromite deposits are at tidewater near the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula in southwestern Alaska, The United States Geological Survey had a field party in the region from July until September 1940 under P. W. Guild, assistant geologist; maps and geological data were assembled and made available to the Bureau of Mines. A preliminary investigation of the deposits at Claim Point by the senior author during July 1941 was followed by surface sampling and core drilling to determine the quantity and grade of the ere, The Geological Survey was represented at the project by George O. Gates, geologist. Cores were checked and the structural data revealed by drill cores were interpreted. The principal chromite deposits have been sampled and delimitated by trenching and core drilling. Other deposits were trenched and sampled but were too small or too low-grade to warrant core drilling.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines tangentially impacted potential coal-cutter bit shank materials against sandstone to investigate the potential of the materials to ignite natural gas by a friction-generated hot streak. The shank material samples were mounted in a 24-in, 550-lb flywheel, which was rotated at surface speeds of 400 to 900 sfpm. The sandstone was advanced toward the rotating flywheel at feed rates of 1 mil per impact. The atmosphere mixture was 7 vol pct natural gas in air. Three grades of polycarbonate resin, an ultra-high-molecular weight polyethylene, and a zinc alloy (ZA27) were among the potential materials. None of these materials caused ignition of the methane at any of the three test speeds (400, 600, and 900 sfpm), but the above materials do not have sufficient strength to hold a carbide tip during coal cutting. Of the materials having sufficient strength to hold a carbide tip, three nickel-based alloys proved less likely to cause a natural gas ignition than did iron-based alloys such as 4340 (a commonly used shank material for coal cutters).

This information circular is one of a series the Bureau of Mines plans to publish describing the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Temple Mountain mining district is unique among the uranium-producing areas on the plateau. This relatively isolated mining district is in Emery County, Utah, on the eastern flank of the San Rafael Swell, about 35 miles southwest of the town of Green River. The district lies just within the eastern escarpment of the San Rafel Reef - a rampart of rugged and tilted sandstone cliffs that encircles the highly eroded core known as the Sinbad Country. The presence of petroleum matter found associated with the ore deposits, the occurrence of uranium in various formations, and the structural deformation caused by collapsed features have aroused a great deal of geologic interest. Mine development on Calyx Flat is distinctive, in that the ore deposits are worked through 36-inch calyx-drill holes.

Volume IV of the final report examines the problem of indirect contact of overhead high-voltage power lines by mining personnel. This refers to the contact of energized lines by workers through some intermediate conductor such as a metallic tool or a piece of high-reaching mobile equipment, thus the term "indirect contact." The shock hazard presented by such contact has been a major cause of electrical fatalities associated with mining operations. The report volume is divided into three major areas. The first gives a general background of overhead lines, basic characteristics, and associated hazards, and continues to describe presently used techniques and devices which attempt to alleviate the contact problem. The second area narrows the discussion to the mining industry by presenting a detailed analysis of 39 overhead-line contact accidents in mining since 1970. The third major section uses the information from the first two areas to formulate recommendations to prevent these accidents and subsequent electrocutions at mining operations.

This report describes investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines from 1957 through 1959 in the Roseland anorthosite-titanium belt of Nelson and Amherst Counties, Va., for the purpose of studying the titanium resources of the area. Three titanium deposits containing much saprolite ore derived from the decomposition of anorthosite and diorite were selected for detailed study Following a reconnaissance of the reported titanium occurrences in the belt. These three deposits occur in or are associated with anorthosite. Most of the occurrences are situated on or near the contact between the anorthosite and the gneissic country rock. The saprolite deposits are as much as 1.5 miles long, 1,000 feet wide, and 100 teat deep and contain significant reserves of titanium-bearing material estimated in excess of 20 million tons. Where it was penetrated by drilling, the unweathered rock beneath the saprolite contains nearly the same titanium values as the saprolite.

The Aluminum Co. of America raised its 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot selling price in March by 34 to 514 per pound. Other producers, including Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. , Anaconda Aluminum Co. , and Reynolds Metals Co., followed Alcoa's lead, raising their quotes to 51$. In late March, domestic merchants quoted ingot at levels ranging between 49.56 and 50.50 per pound. BISMUTH: Several domes tic dealers lowered their bismuth prices in recent weeks by 50t-606 to within a range of $5.60-$5.75 per pound; producers continue to hold published prices at $7.50.

"INTRODUCTION The Friedensville district was one of the most important zinc-producing areas in the United States from 1859 to 1893. The ore minerals near the surface were principally calamine and smithsonite, but with depth sphalerite was found in increasing proportions. The ore bodies of the district are reported to have been in chimneys, occurring in folded and faulted beds of Beekmantown limestone of Ordovician age.The Correll was one of five mines near Friedensyille that were exten¬sively exploited. The high-grade ore shoots were mined to a depth of several hundred feet, but it is believed that inability to compete with lower-cost production elsewhere, rather than exhaustion of the ore bodies, compelled the mines to close.There is no record to indicate that any attempt was made during the period of operation to explore for additional ore in the limestone beds down the dip below the mine workings. The possibility that exploration might reveal additional ore in the limestone beds below the known ore shoots led the Bureau of Mines to diamond-drill the Correll property between September 1943 and January 1944."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting investigations to improve design methods for mining volcano-genic massive-sulfide (VMS) type deposits in environmentally sensitive regions. This study was conducted at the Greens Creek Mine, which is typical of many VMS-type deposits throughout southeast Alaska, and served as a case history for computer modeling and structural analysis. Results indicated that the finite-element design method provided reasonable comparisons with both the anticipated regional stress regime and the measured deformational response of the underground accessways. Investigators concluded that reasonable accuracy can be expected for stability analyses of proposed mine design scenarios at this mine using the results of this preliminary study.

"INTRODUCTION This paper is riot to be considered a complete survey of data on carbides; it is only an attempt to correlate the more reliable of the existing data of interest in connection with the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, and its purpose is to guide future experiment and thought.A general review of the literature on the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis will be published in the near future as a chapter by H. H. Storch for a book entitled, ""The Chemical Utilization of Coal,"" edited by H. H. Lowry. This chapter covers the literature up to l9). The United States Bureau of Mines frequently receives requests for information regarding the details of its organization and the nature of its activities. In response to such an inquiry a series of articles outlining the work of the bureau as a whole and of its different divisions was prepared and published in the United States Daily, Washington, D. C., during November, 1929. These articles are reprinted here in the hone that they may assist in giving the public a more complete understanding of the aims and purposes of the bureau and the methods by which it is laboring for the attainment of safer conditions and more efficient methods in American mineral industries. "The kaolin deposits of Aiken County, South Carolina (fig. 1), have been worked continuously since 1852. It has been long known that the deposits contain a high percentage of alumina and that large reserves exist. These facts led to the early selection of this area for examination in the search by the Bureau of Mines for high-alumina clays. An exploratory program was started by the Bureau, and drilling was carried on from June 27, 1942, to October 31, 1942.The kaolin-bearing district occupies an area approximately 25 miles long and 11 miles wide, running northeast, with its center at Aiken, S. C. (fig. 1). Within this district, a triangular area bounded by Horse Creek, Silver Bluff Road, and Hamburg Road was roughly prospected by boring 43 machine and 12 hand holes. As a result of the data obtained, a final smaller area was chosen for more systematic prospecting. This area is bounded by Pine Log, Tewkesbury, Silver Bluff, and Craig Sawmill Roads and covers about 4,000 acres.Mineral exploration agreements covering 11,272 acres were signed by 35 property owners, and 11,956 feet was drilled in 200 holes on these properties.The Bureau of Mines exploration work in the district has indicated 19,514,000 short tons of kaolin, of which approximately 10,000,000 tons would average over 35 percent alumina.The tonnages and grades of kaolin developed by this exploration are tabulated below.All grades of this kaolin average approximately 2 percent Fe203 and 1.5 percent Ti02.This project was under the general supervision of J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-Metals Mining Section of the Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, until July 1942. The -project was then under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and later Rowe McCrae, consecutively district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. The final report was prepared, under the general supervision of V..J. Lynch, chief, Raleigh Branch, Mining Division, by William A. Beck from the original report by the author.Acknowledgment is made for the wholehearted cooperation and assistance given to the Bureau of Mines by the various operating companies in the district. VARIABLES OF composition and environment affecting storage stability of gasoline-type fuels were studied, utilizing radioactive tracers and other analytical techniques. Changes in gasoline composition brought about by aging were determined and correlated with gum formation. The amounts of reaction of selected gasoline components, measured by radioactive tracers, were determined in a gasoline-type blend and in a mixture of 17 selected pure gasoline components. The data show that sulfur compounds, nitrogen compounds, polycyclics, and olefins enter into gum-forming reactions. Certain sulfur and nitrogen compounds were found to be most reactive in the gum-forming process. Results of this study indicate that the aromatic constituents of gasolines may contribute substantially and directly to gum formation. A mixture of tetralin and indan-type compounds is reactive, and this mixture appears to be the main aromatic portion entering into gum formation. A secondary but significant amount of naphthalenes also appears to have reacted in the gum-forming process. Analyses of the sulfm compounds in a fresh and an aged fuel indicated that elemental sulfur, hydrogen sulfide, thiols, sulfides, and disulfides were depleted during aging, but thiophenes and residual sulfur compounds were not depleted by fuel deterioration.

COAL, salt, lapis lazuli, and construction materials such as lime, gypsum, slate and stone were the only mineral commodities produced in Afghanistan during 1963. Beryl has been produced sporadically. Small deposits of chromite and lead-zinc are known but remained unexploited because there were no domestic markets for the two commodities and transportation costs from Afghanistan to world markets were too high. Oil fields of sufficient magnitude to justify exploitation have not been discovered, but known natural gas reserves are substantial and have potential significance. There is evidence of large high-grade iron ore resources, but these are in an unfavorable location. The contribution of the mineral industry to the economy was small, although precise figures are not available. The reported value of mineral production in 1963 (excluding barite) was 181.6 million afghanis (about US$4 million). Employment in the industry, including cement plants and quarries, was estimated to be no more than about 2,000.

This Bureau of Mines report discusses the principles of using computers to draw maps and plot geologic data of mining areas. The types of maps that can be drawn by a computer are reviewed, using as examples two separate areas where poor roof and gas emissions caused mining problems. Such maps can be used not only to help identify problem areas, but also to predict areas where problems could occur, thus giving mine operators time to work out solutions prior to mining. The average cost of a computer-drawn map for a mine property is less than $100, including computer time and man-hours for data preparation.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report discusses wire ropes used for hoisting in U.S. mines. The in-formation presented was extracted from a large body of data compiled by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) using a data base management system (DMS). Further, these extracted data were then manipulated to provide tables of data that show the types and amount of wire rope used for hoisting. This report describes the different types of wire ropes and how a DMS can be used to manipulate MSHA's wire rope inventory data. The data indicate that more 1-1/4-in-diam ropes, 6x27 construction ropes, and right lang lay ropes are used in U.S. mines than ropes of any other diameter, construction, or lay type.

The primary purpose of the Bergius (hydrogenation of coal) and Fischer-Tropsch (hydrogenation of carbon monoxide) processes is the production of synthetic liquid fuels. This objective is of importance in insuring an adequate supply of motor fuels and lubricating oils in the United States. In the urgency of the basic research and process development work on synthetic liquid fuels, the possibilities for the production of synthetic chemicals inherent in these processes have hitherto received little attention in this country. However, the by-products, as well as the primary products, from the Bergius and Fischer-Tropsch processes are rich source materials for organic chemicals. The overhead oil from liquid-phase hydrogenation of coal, for example, contains benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, aromatic solvents, about 20 percent tar acids (largely phenol, cresols, and xylenols), and 3 percent nitrogen bases. Wax, alcohols, and acids are by--products of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In addition, techniques have been developed which make possible the production of aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, acids, aldehydes, and other oxygenated organic compounds. These chemicals are more valuable on a unit basis than gasoline. Because of continued rapid expansion of the plastic, resin, lacquer, and solvent industries, larger amounts of many of these chemicals will be needed in the near future.
