"This information circular discusses drilling and blasting in open-cut iron-ore mines and is one of a series of papers describing iron-ore mining practices in the Lake Superior district to aid in preventing accidents in that industry.The Lake Superior district consists of the Marquette and Menominee ranges of Michigan, the Gogebic range of Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Vermilion, Mesabi, and Cuyuna range of Minnesota. Open-cut mines produce 8o percent of the iron ore mined in the district; 98 percent of the total Lake Superior district open-cut ore is produced in Minnesota and 2 percent in Michigan. The entire Wisconsin iron-ore production is from underground nines. The Mesabi range in Minnesota produced 93 percent of the open-cut iron ore and 76 percent of the total iron ore in the district in 1947.During the 8-year period 1940-47, 619,000,000 gross tons of iron ore were shipped from mines of the district, or 85 percent of the United States output. Approximately 78,000,000 gross tons of iron ore were shipped from the mines of Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin in 1947.This paper is based primarily on observations daring the period July 1947 to March 1948. Thirty-two open-cut mines were visited; 28 on the Mesabi range, 3 on the Cuyuna range, and 1 on the Marquette range. In 1947, 36,100,000 tons of iron ore was shipped from these 32 mines, or 59 percent of the open-cut ore and 46 percent of the total iron ore shipped from the district. During 1947 about 90 open-cut iron-ore mines were operating in the district, and the annual production of each ranged from 25,000 to 10,000,000 tons.Many recommendations included in this paper for improving safety and preventing injuries to employees were taken from Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7387.Data were collected under the direction of Frank E. These formations are designated by one commonly applied name, ""iron formations.""4/The Mesabi range in northern Minnesota, about 70 miles northwest of Duluth, was opened to mining in 1892; it is the largest single source of iron ore in the United States. It is 75 miles long and, because of the gentle dip of the ore formation, it ranges in width from 1-1/2 to 3 miles.5/ The ore formation, which is nearly horizontal, has a maximum thickness of about 450 feet and is covered by a glacial drift that ranges from 10 to over 100 feet in thickness. Hydrogen sulphide associated with the gasps and vapors from certain crude oils now produced in the United States has forced a serious health and safety problem upon the petroleum industry. Although the presence of hydrogen sulphide in or occurring with Mexican crudes has been known for some time, it was not until recently that crude oils which give off poisonous amounts of hydrogen sulphide have been produced to any extent in the United State. The injurious effects of this poisonous gas were first recognized by the refiners along; the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts upon receiving shipments of crude petroleum from Mexico. The problem of combating the hazards of the gases and vapors given off by this petroleum become more important as the use of Mexican crude increased. In 1925, the Bureau of Mines and Public Health Service under cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, studied the causes rend effects of hydrogen sulphide poisoning. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 2312 is report of this investigation, and although written with special reference to refineries, it nevertheless contains much information that is of value to the producer of petroleum.

Production of mercury from the cinnabar deposits of the southwestern Arkansas mercury district began in 1931 , reached its peak in 1942 , and ended in 1944. The mines are now idle . Virtually all the cinnabar was obtained from deposits in a belt , about a mile wide , of steeply dipping sandstone beds in the overriding blocks of three thrust faults . The belt was productive for a length of about 27 miles eastward from eastern Howard County, through Pike County, into Clark County . During the early life of the district, Federal agencies watched and recorded its progress as a contributor of a strategic metal, and later, during the war, conducted investigations designed to advance its development . In 1941 , the Bureau of Mines and the U. S. Geological Survey cooperated in investigations on eight mineralized areas in the western part of the district , to wit : Hales mine , U. S. mine , Lulu Bell property, Hopkins Hill , East Gap Ridge , Gap Ridge , Parnell Hill , and Section 17 mine area . U. S. Geological Survey prepared both surface and mine maps and designated the areas to be investigated ; the Bureau did the drilling , trenching, and sampling involved in the investigations . Twelve holes , aggregating 3,539 feet of bore , were diamond drilled on six properties ; 5,309 linear feet of surface trenches were bulldozed in six areas and 19 samples taken from them ; and 86 underground channel samples were cut in two adits on one property . In 1944 , the Bureau of Mines measured mine dumps and calcine dumps in the district in an investigation of their mercury content . Two mine dumps and one calcine dump were sampled . The data pertinent to the work done by the Bureau are included in this report .

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the S02 leaching of MgO from high-MgO-bearing Florida phosphate concentrates. The S02 was effective in leaching some of the MgO from three phosphate concentrates; flow rate of the S02 and leach time were major factors in determining the amount of MgO leached. Calcining the samples, then grinding to minus 200 mesh, and elevating the leach temperature gave only small increases in the amount of MgO leached. The research also showed that some of the MgO was so intimately associated with the phosphate mineral that it could not be removed by S02 leaching. This amounted to about 0.6, 0.7, and 1.0 pct MgO in three leached residues. The calculated heads for the three concentrate samples averaged 1.4, 1.1, and 1.5 pct MgO, respectively, before leaching.

As part of its goal to minimize the requirements for critical materials, the Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated the consolidation of an iron-base superalloy (20 pct Cr, 5 pct each Ni and Mn, 1 pct each C, W, Mo, and Cb, and the balance Fe) and its modifications by powder metallurgy (P/M) techniques. Vacuum-atomized, prealloyed powder was used. Consolidation was by sintering of cold-pressed alloy powder, or by forging plus rolling or extrusion of canned powder. Several commercial lubricants were evaluated in the pressing operation. At 50-tsi compacting pressure with up to 3 wt-pct lubricant, green strengths did not exceed 1,000 psi. Powder sintered just below the solidus temperature attained a tensile strength of 69,000 psi and 4 pct elongation. Liquid-phase sintering produced higher densities, lower tensile strengths, and nil ductility. Canned powder was forged and rolled at 1,200° C, yielding a 100-hr rup¬ture strength of 9,800 psi at 815° C and a room-temperature tensile strength of >130,000 psi at 6 pct elongation. Heat treatment of modified P/M iron-base alloy containing 0.63 pct C resulted in a 100-hr rupture strength of 17,000 psi. Oxidation resistance at 805° to 815° C of the forged and rolled P/M iron-base alloy was similar to that of the cast iron-base alloy and supe¬rior to conventional stainless steels.

This study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for four underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.06 to 4.99 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of November 12, 1973, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1971, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1973 indexes. Initial capital investment ranges from $12,540,700 for the 1.06-million-ton-per-year (MM tpy) mine to $44,720,500 for the 4.99 MM tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $21,850,700 to $75,693,500 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $8.76 to $7.53 per ton, assuming a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the White Mountain mercury deposit, in the Kuskokwim River Basin, to better determine the extent of mercury mineralization and to encourage its development by private industry. A program of diamond drilling, augering, bulldozer trenching, and sampling was carried on during four field seasons, from 1960 to 1963, inclusive. Significant amounts of cinnabar, with only trace amounts of arsenic and antimony, occur in dolomite over an area about 4,000 feet long and 1,500 feet wide. The deposit differs from other mercury deposits in the Kuskokwim River Basin by the absence of silica-carbonate and rhyolite intrusives. Small-scale mining was started in 1963 as the result of Bureau investigation and continued during the summers of 1964 and 1965. The investigations indicate that open pit mining might be the most feasible method of working this deposit.

The U.S. Department of Energy Pittsburgh Research Center,1 has developed and field tested a spatial, spectral sensor for measuring the thickness of mineral deposits. Knowledge of the dielectric constant of the material is not necessary because the electrical properties of the media are determined automatically along with the thickness or distance measurement. The technology was developed to measure the thickness of coal remaining in the roof and floor of a mine or the thickness of a coal pillar remaining between two mining entries for the purpose of guiding a mining machine. However, field tests have shown the new technique is equally valuable for measuring the thickness of each layer in a multilayer manmade structure such as highway paving or building foundations and the thickness of geological deposits other than coal, such as, salt, granite and sandstone. The noncontacting electromagnetic technique uses spatial modulation created by moving a simple dipole sensor antenna in a direction along each axes to be measured while the complex reflection coefficient is measured at multiple frequencies over a two-to-one bandwidth. The antenna motion imparts spatial modulation to the data and enables frequency domain signal processing to solve the problem of media, target and antenna dispersion. The technique overcomes the problem of multipath reflections from nearby metal structures and avoids the use of radio frequency absorbing material. In its present form the system measures material thickness of zero to over 3 m to within ±2.5 cm accuracy. The system parameters are variable to suit the application but for most applications default values of 40 cm antenna motion with measurements made at 401 frequencies from 0.6 to 1.4 GHz at each of 32 antenna positions with a power level of 0 dBm or less are more than adequate to provide a satisfactory signal-to noise ratio. In the range of 0 to 10 m the system operates in the continuous wave mode and by simply turning off the transmitter for ranges beyond 10 m the problems of time domain processing are entirely avoided. The technique can be implemented with a vector network analyzer, a servo controlled L-band antenna positioner, an IEEE488 bus controller and a process computer. An electronics package designed and constructed to operate in the harsh mining environment and providing 1, 2 or 3 dimensional image presentation is being evaluated as a replacement for the network analyzer. This paper describes the practice in diamond drilling blast holes and discusses the relative merits of this method as compared with drilling by percussion rock-drills at eastern magnetite mine A. The rooke that were drilled included: (1) Gneiss; (2) sohist; (3) crystalline limestone; and (4) granular masses of magnetite. The principal stoping methods were: (1) Sublevel open stoping and (2) inclined room-and-pillar. Diamond drilling was used in the sublevel stopes and in some of the large pillars in an old section of the mine. Experimental work on diamond drilling blast holes began in 1943. Drill- ing proved difficult owing to the occurrence of fingers of extremely hard barren rock in the magnetite ore. All diamond drilling was contracted to a firm that furnished everything necessary for drilling except compressed air and water. In most instances the diamond-drill machine is clamped directly to a 3.5-inch column to reduce vibration. For drilling in floor pillars in open stopes, the drill was set on a demountable, sectionalized steel, frame with four legs carrying a 20-foot, 3.5-inch, extra-heavy pipe. "Both coring and noncoring bits were tried. In holes drilled with a cor- ing bit, the core was ground into sludge as the bit advanced so that it was unnecessary to delay drilling for pulling core. Data on tests with several types of bits are given as well as some oper- ating results. A direct comparison of costs between diamond drilling and percussion drilling was not available. The advantages of diamond drilling blast holes at mine A included: (1) Safer working conditions in open stopes. (2) The recovery of additional ore. (3) A reduction in the amount of stops development.

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 34,680-acre Lime Canyon Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-231) to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is in Clark County, NV, about 30 air miles southwest of Mesquite, NV. The area studied contains an estimated 44 million tons of indicated subeconomic resources of gypsum, an inferred subeconimic resource of limestone and dolomite, and occurrences of gold, copper, uranium, and zeolite. The Wilderness Study Area is underlain chiefly by carbonate rocks with lesser amounts of sandstone and shale. Metamorphic, granitic, and volcanic rocks also crop out within the area. Large portions of the area are overlain by alluvium. The Wilderness Study Area is within the Gold Butte mining district. Several gold mines with past production are nearby to the south of the Wilderness Study Area; one mine is reported in operation on a small scale. Several silver-bearing copper and zinc mines with past production are nearby to the east of the Wilderness Study Area

"Before discussing oil shales it may be well to consider briefly the conditions surrounding the petroleum industry in the United States, because these largely explain why so much interest is being manifested in oil shales. The United States is not only the greatest producer of petroleum in the world, its output amounting to about 65 per cent of the world's total production; but is also the world's greatest consumer, using more petroleum than it produces within its own borders. For the past four or five years it has been necessary to import oil at a continually increasing rate to make up the deficit between domestic production and domestic consumption. Experts who have made a close study of the future supply and demand for, crude petroleum are satisfied that under present production practice and with the development of possible undeveloped productive areas, the gap between domestic consumption and production will steadily .increase.As possible solutions for the impending domestic shortage of oil, various expedients are receiving attention. These may be grouped under three heads, as follows:(1) Temporary measures, such as curtailment of consumption, development of more efficient methods of production, and more efficient utilization of supplies of petroleum still available. It is unlikely that there will be any great curtailment in consumption of petroleum in the United States; rather, consumption will continue to increase unless a real shortage of oil actually forces curtailment of consumption. The other two possibilities mentioned deserve, and are resolving, serious thought. Much experimental work along these lines, some of which has already yielded excellent results, is being done. Obviously, however, any of these remedies are temporary ones only, so far as regards domestic production of petroleum."

Research was conducted to examine the feasibility of extracting manganese from Georgia umber ore by a three-stage continuous sulfuric acid-ferrous sulfate pickle liquor leaching process. A continuous cyclic process for treating the umber was operated successfully, using a synthetic solution simulating a ferrous sulfate fortified anolyte solution discharged from a manganese electrolytic cell as the leaching medium. Leaching efficiency based on removal of the manganese from the ore ranged from 83 to 89 percent for all systems tested.

Data obtained by the Federal Bureau of Mines on the dust explosion hazard in air are presented for 220 samples of agricultural products. Information is given on ignition temperature of dust clouds and layers, minimum explosive concentration, minimum electrical energy for ignition, explosion pressure and rates of pressure rise, amount of inert dust required to prevent flame propagation, and, in a few instances, the permissible oxygen concentration in an atmosphere to prevent ignition by spark and by heated surface. The effects of particle size and source of sample on explosibility are shown. The relative ignition sensitivity, severity of explosion, and overall explosibility of the materials are characterized by empirical indexes. This report contains Ma obtained by the Bureau in laboratory studies on the explosion hazards of agricultural dusts. Recognition of the dangers will encourage adoption of adequate measures to prevent ignition and explosion during preparation, processing, and utilization of the materials. Agricultural products constitute one of the largest groups of materials used in America. There has been little change in timbering methods in anthracite mines for 75 years, and technical information on strata control is almost wholly lacking. In order to assist the industry to establish technical data, the Bureau of Mines and a Northern field operator are cooperating in underground experiments, the first phase of which has been to investigate pneumatic packing. The four principal methods of packing in mining are hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and hand. The hydraulic pa caring system is believed to have originated at Shenanodah, Pa., in 1864,4/ to prevent destruction of a church by surface subsidence after underground coal mining. This method was used again in 1884 to arrest an underground fire at Buck Ridge colliery, near Shamokin, Pa. In 1901 hydraulic packing was introduced to Europe in Upper Silesia, where it gained in popularity owing to the availability of large quantities of sand suitable for flushing .5/ Hydraulic packing has a number of disadvantages. Chief among these are the softening effect of large quantities of water on the mine floor conducive to heaving action; drainage and punning costs; and the inability to fill roof cavities completely in flat beds.

The magnitude and rate of advance of an inmine coal squeeze was deter-mined by measuring roof-to-floor convergence on a regular basis. A dial-gage tube extensometer was used to collect data. Using these measurements) Bureau of Mines employees drew contour maps and graphs to show the direction and rate of squeezing. Information on the rate of squeeze advance was used to determine whether steps should be taken to prevent roof and/or floor movement from closing an entire section of the mine and if alteration of mining plans was necessary to prevent further squeeze development. Data analysis revealed that the squeeze was decelerating; thus there was no need to strengthen support in the areas of the mine that were studied. Mining plans were altered, however, as a result of the findings of this investigation.

This report describes pilot-plant studies and an economic evaluation of a process developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines, Albany Metallurgy Research Center, to produce synthetic rutile from a rock-type ilmenite concentrate. In this process, ilmenite blended with coke and lime is smelted in an electric arc furnace to separate most of the iron as salable pig iron and to form a titania-enriched slag of low iron content, which is treated with oxygen and titanium pyrophosphate. The titanium oxides are converted to crystalline rutile; the phosphate glass contains most of the associated impurities. The treated slag is ground and leached with sulfuric acid to liberate rutile crystals, which are concentrated by physical methods. In pilot testing conducted to obtain data for a cost estimation, a synthesized product containing about 88 wt-pct TiO2 and less than 2 pct FeO was extracted from a rock-type ilmenite concentrate containing about 45 wt-pct TiO2. The estimated fixed capital cost (on a mid-1975 basis) of a plant producing 500 tpd of synthetic rutile is $28,290,100. Based on 330 operating days per year, the estimated operating cost for this process is $351 per ton of synthetic rutile. The estimated selling price of synthetic rutile made from rock-type ilmenite is $344 per ton, based on a credit of $160 per ton of pig iron and a 20 pct interest rate of return on investment after taxes.

THE injury data and experience in this bulletin are presented in three general sections. The first section contains general and detailed data relating to 1948 injury experience in bituminous-coal and Pennsylvania anthracite mines, separately and combined into totals for all coal mines. The related employment, worktime, production, and productivity data are given in each breakdown of the statistical data. Tables 1 through 22 constitute a subsection and present statistics on number of injuries, frequency and severity rates, average severity, detailed and major causes of injuries, injury records of the coal-producing States, distribution of injuries by part of body, and distribution of injuries by days of disability. Tables 23 through 45, the second subsection, present injury experience in bituminous-coal mines by various selected factors of physical or operating conditions that ma contribute to the occurrence of injuries. The degree of mechanical loading, productivity, size of mine by number of men working and by tonnage mined, thickness of bed, length of shift, number of shifts, type of cap lamps, rating of mine as gassy or nongassy, type of ventilation, and combinations of these factors influencing mine safety are presented in this group of tables. Similar data on Pennsylvania anthracite mines are listed in tables 46 through 63, which comprise the third subsection. The second section of the report contains the generalized annual injury records of bituminous-coal, Pennsylvania anthracite, and all coal mines from the earliest available data through 1948. Tables 64 through 97 list the number of fatal and nonfatal injuries, injury rates, and causes of injuries on an industry basis, the long-term injury records of each coal-producing State, and the related employment, worktime, and production data.
