A Fortran IV computer program entitled WAVE, which employs an explicit finite difference scheme for solving the one-dimensional wave equation for a time-dependent inelastic rock has been developed. The viscoelastic properties of the rock are represented in terms of a generalized Voigt model. The theory on which the computer program is based is rederived and a short description of the program is given. The computer program input instructions, a listing of the computer program, and example problems with required input and subsequent printed output are presented in appendixes. In the example problems) calculated results are free of spurious oscillations which occur in certain other methods of numerical calculation) notably the extended Ritz method.

This preliminary statement presents some of the results of tests carried out at the Lakeside Station of the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Co. , by the fuel section of the U. S. Bureau of Mines , in cooperation with the research department of the Combustion Engineering Corporation of New York . The object of these tests was to determine the thermal efficiency , ease of operation , and other particulars of a boiler equipped with specially designed furnace and burners for burning powdered coal . The boiler tested haş 13380 square feet of heating surface , and is one of eight boilers equipped with the Lopulco powdered coal system supplying steam to two 20,000 -Kw . steam turbines in the largest power house burning powdered coal . Twenty- six tests were run at rates of heat transference varying from 4000 to 8000 B.t.u. per square foot of boiler heating surface , and the mean thermal efficiency attained was about 84 per cent , based on the gross calorific value of the fuel as fired . The efficiency varied little with the rate of steaming , and its high value is accounted for by the small loss from incomplete combustion and the small amount of excess air which varied from 5 to 36 per cent . The coal burned had a gross calorific value of about 11500 to 12800 B.t.u. per pound , contained 2 to 5 per cent moisture , 33 to 36 per cent volatile matter and 9 to 13 per cent ash, and was so ground thaf 89 to 95 per cent would pass through a 100- mesh sieve . The ash had a softening point of 2150 to 2450 degrees F. , but did not fuse together at the bottom of the furnace because it was partly protected from the flame radiation by means of a series of water tubes connected to the boiler which were placed between the fumace bottom and the flame, ..

Electric - smelting studies were made on titaniferous materials obtained from the Klukwan and Snettisham , Alaska ; Choteau , Mont .; and Iron Mountain , Wyo . , deposits with the objective of determining the feasibility of producing pig iron and an enriched titania slag in one test series and pig iron alone in another test series . In addition , related studies were conducted to determine the amenability of Choteau crude ore to wet -magnetic separation and to determine the quality of steel that could be produced from the titaniferous pig iron . The continuous smelting tests were made in a three - phase , submerged - arc , electric furnace , and the laboratory steelmaking tests were made in a singlephase electric - arc furnace . A continuous , belt - type , wet - magnetic separator was used in conjunction with a ball mill and a spiral classifier in recovering titaniferous magnetite from the crude Choteau ore . Pig irons containing less than 0.05 percent phosphorus or sulfur were readily produced from the titaniferous materials ; iron recoveries ranged from 92 to 98 percent . The Choteau ore was ground to minus 65 - mesh to produce a concentrate containing 60 percent or more iron . The steel produced from the titaniferous pig iron was a high - quality product .

This Bureau of Mines study estimates typical capital investments, operating costs, and selling prices for two bituminous coal strip mines in the Eastern and Interior provinces and a subbituminous coal operation in the Northern Great Plains province. The annual productions were based on tonnage required to fuel a 250-MM-scfd, high-Btu gas plant. The annual tonnage for the Eastern province mine is 4.8 million tons; for the Interior province mine, 6.72 mi 11 ion tons; and for the Northern Great Plains province mine, 9.2 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of May 12, 1974, under the terms of the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1971, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1973 and early 1974 indexes . Initial capital investment varies: $45,358,600 for the 4.8-million- ton-per-year (MM tpy) mine in the Eastern province, $54,603,000 for the 6.72 MM tpy mine in the Interior province, and $29,871,000 for the 9.2 MM tpy mine in the Northern Great Plains province. Total capital invest-ments for the Eastern province mine, the Interior province mine, and the Northern Great Plains province mine are $61,070,000, $76,753,000, and $56,286,000, respectively. Corresponding selling prices for the coal, per ton, are $4.79, $4.23, and $2.66, assuming a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes. These studies are considered typical for the areas involved. Costs will vary depending on specific locations in these areas.

Relative enthalpies of CuBr from 298.15 to 1,301 K were measured at the Bureau of Mines to provide thermodynamic data needed for the advancement of mineral technology. The temperatures of transition were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the standard enthalpies of transition[ (IlH~r) by drop calorimetry. The combined results gave reversible transitions at 657 K with llH~r= 1.10 kcal/mol, at 741 K with lm~r == 0.51 kcal/mol, and at 759 K with an enthalpy of fusion (AH~) of 1.22 kcal/moL ] An anomalous increase in heat capacity preceded the first crystal transition at 657 K. Tabulated values are listed for the standard relative enthalpy, heat capacity, entropy, and Gibbs energy function from 298.15 to 1,500 K. Standard relative enthalpies are also given in equation form and combined with thermodynamic data from the literature to derive values of standard enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation.

Limestone is the most widely used of all racks and is essential to a great many industries, including tae building trades, highway construction, metallurgy, agriculture, end many chemical and manufacturing enterprises. It occurs in some form in every State and is produced in thousands of quarries. Production in 1930 exceeded 134,000,000 tons. It has more numerous and more diversified uses than any other rock. This paper is designed to furnish general information on the various branches of limestone quarrying and their economic importance. Brief reference is made to dimension stone, and a more complete discussion follows of the uses, requisite qualities, quarry methods, grid processes of preparation of crushed and broken limestone. Footnote references serve to guide the reader to more detailed information.

"INTRODUCTION The provision of escapeways from coal mines is a moral and, in most States, a legal obligation of mine owners and operators. The obligation is not always fulfilled because of the hope that no occasion will ever arise requiring the use of such facilities, and, as time passes without the need for using them, a false sense of security is born in the belief that ""it can't happen here.""The disastrous fire in a mine in Ohio on July 5, 1944, again focused attention on the importance of escapeways in averting disasters and made it clear that one or more dependable exits must be provided from a mine and parts thereof where men might be trapped by being cut off from the regular travel route. This matter of always-having available travelable exits has been advocated for many years by the United States Bureau of Mines."

The results of a program to demonstrate the technical feasibility of hydraulic borehole coal mining are presented in this report. The hydraulic borehole method of coal mining involves inserting a hydraulic mining device into a borehole that has been drilled from the surface into the underground coal bed. The borehole mining device issues a jet of water under high pressure, which breaks the coal. These pieces of coal, along with the water, form a slurry, which flows to the base of the borehole where it is pumped to the -surface. Phase I of the program encompassed the design, fabrication and factory-testing of a hydraulic borehole mining device. The program was successfully completed with the field tests being conducted at the Wilkeson-Carbonado Coal Field near Wilkeson, Washington. The technical feasibility of hydraulic borehole coal mining was demonstrated by mining 32 tons of coal at a depth of about 75 ft over a period of 4 hours.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. Ropes of sizes ranging from 3/4 to 2 in. in diameter and from 2 to 35 ft in length were tested to determine their breaking strength, elongation, and torque. This was done to characterize the test equipment on ropes used in mine hoisting systems.

"These proceedings consist of papers presented at a Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminar on postdisaster survival and rescue research. Several seminars are held each year to bring the latest results of Bureau research to the attention of the mining industry as quickly as possible.INTRODUCTIONThe postdisaster research program is directed toward research and development of technology and equipment that increases the chances of a miner surviving or being rescued after an underground mine disaster. A disaster is an accident of major proportions, and it may result in the entrapment of miners whose normal egress from the mine is cut off. This often necessitates a rescue operation and a means of keeping the trapped miners alive while they await rescue. The Bureau is currently pursuing research to develop the technology that will enhance the ability of miners to survive such an occurrence. The research is divided into two basic problem areas, survival and rescue. Both areas are concerned with the inability of miners and rescue teams to cope with the postaisaster environment, such as toxic gases, unstable roof conditions, water flooding, and lack of oxygen. In addition, research is also conducted to find ways of locating and quickly reaching trapped miners. Most of the research conducted by the Bureau has been directed toward the postdisaster problems associated with coal mines. However, most of the research results are also applicable to noncoal mines as well.The papers presented in these proceedings address some of the recent research conducted by the Bureau of Mines that has been directed toward the postdisaster problems outlined above. The topics covered range from an overview of the technology developed for oxygen selfrescuers to training programs for mine rescue. Any questions or comments pertaining to this research are encouraged and appreciated. "The Bureau of Mines evaluated the long-term cost and availability of primary gold production from 135 mines and deposits worldwide. Collectively, the evaluated countries represent 93 pct of world gold production. Total recoverable gold available (as of January 1984) from a subset of 111 significant producing mines and developing deposits in 13 market economy countries (MEC's) is estimated at 810 million tr oz. The Republic of South Africa is estimated to account for 87 pct of total recoverable gold. The United States and Canada account for 4 and 4.5 pct of the total, respectively. Eighty-three percent of total recoverable gold is available at a constant 1984 break-even price of $400/tr oz, and 70 pct is available at $300/tr oz. South Africa accounts for 90 pct of the gold available at $400/tr oz or less.Major conclusions are that (1) South Africa should remain the largest world producer through the year 2000, (2) annual MEC output in 2000 should not be significantly different than current output given constant 1984 gold prices of more than $300/tr oz, and (3) there may be a significant decline in production after 2010 in the absence of major new discoveries and continued development of new mines to offset the depletion of the South African mines. INTRODUCTIONSince the late 1970's the world gold mining industry has been characterized by dynamic growth in production and volatility in price. World production in 1983 was almost 15 pct greater than in 1980, and the short-term trend continues upward. Annual dollar-based price changes since the early 1970's have been unprecedented in both magnitude and volatility. This commodity, which sold for $35/tr oz3 for over a third of a century, reached an annual average $612/tr oz in 1980. Until 1980, the future price of gold seemed set on an upward trend. Since that year, however, world gold prices have fallen by over 50 pct to slightly over $300/tr oz at the end of 1984.Against this background, this study was undertaken to determine (1) the level of world demonstrated gold resources, (2) total and annual availability of gold mine production, (3) long-run production costs per operation and by national aggregates, (4) the economic and technical factors that impact upon cost and availability, and (5) probable future mine production and cost trends."

Dissociation and vaporization of gold chlorides and bromides were investigated by a static pressure method and by Knudsen cell mass spectrometer. Two distinct chlorine and three distinct bromine pressure-temperature relation-ships were observed for the respective salts. The chlorine pressures are attributed to the dissociation of Au2Cl6 and Au2C12, and the bromine pressures to the dissociation of Au2Br6, Au2Br4, and AU2Br2, These pressure-temperature relationships were used to calculate dissociation pressure equations, enthalpies, and entropies of dissociation for each salt. Mass analysis of the vapors over AU2Cls between 83° and 152° C confirmed the existence of gaseous AU2C16. Ionization potential of this molecule is 11.0±0.1 ev and enthalpy of vaporization is 28.l±2.0 kcal/mole. Mass analysis of the vapors over the gold bromides detected only Bra in the temperature range 15°-150° C.

Objective To identify techniques to reduce the probability of gob gas explosions. Background In the last 6 years, seven explosions of methane and/or coal dust occurred within worked-out, sealed areas (gobs) of underground U.S. coal mines. These explosions, believed to have been started by lightning, destroyed many mine seals and caused much damage external to the sealed area. Three of these gob gas explosions occurred in one mine in Alabama over a 3-year period. Fortunately, the explosion forces and the toxic gases that vented from the sealed gob area did not cause fatalities or injuries, but they destroyed several large seals. If miners had been inspecting or working near these areas, the potential for serious injury and/or death would have been high. The United Mine Workers of America and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requested that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) help identify the mechanisms for lightning penetration into the gob and recommend ways to reduce the probability of occurrence of future explosions from such lightning penetrations into sealed areas of underground coal mines. Because three of the explosions occurred in a single mine, special attention was focused on these particular explosions. The first occurred in April 1994 in a sealed area, which enclosed about 1.35square miles of abandoned workings (gob). This explosion destroyed 3 of the 38 seals that surrounded the gob. These seals were less than 2,000 ft away from three 4.5-in-diam steel-cased test wells that extended from the surface into the mine entry. At the time of the explosion, the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN)verified 12 lightning strikes within 10 miles of the mine, including several above the gob. After the 1994 explosion, the damaged seals were rebuilt using an acceptable seal design capable of with standing a 20-psi explosion, as required by 30 CFR 75.335. On January 26,1996, a second gob explosion destroyed five more cementitious pumpable seals less than 2,000 ft away from those destroyed in 1994and even closer to the steel-cased wells. The NLDN verified72 lightning strikes in the area of this second gob explosion. Compressive strength analyses of fragments from the destroyed seals showed that strengths ranged from 11 to 138 psi, with an average of83 psi. This is over 100 psi below the minimum 200-psi compressive strength requirement for cementitious pumpable seals. These seals were again replaced. On July 9, 1997, the third and most violent explosion occurred in the same vicinity of the last two explosions. Three more cementitious pumpable seals were destroyed, including one newer seal that exceeded the minimum 200-psi compressive strength requirement. An economic analysis of underground gasification of coal, based on experimental results obtained by the Bureau of Mines, indicates that a gas suitable for use in a power plant might be produced for approximately $.62 to $.77 per million British thermal units. This estimate does not include cost of land purchase. The gasification experiments were conducted in a 3-ft. seam of high volatile A bituminous coal. The major factors which can influence a change in operating costs are height of overburden, power costs, thermal efficiency, and the gasification air inlet pressure. Shales from 14 locations in Indiana were sampled , tested , and evaluated to determine feasibility of producing lightweight aggregates by rotary - kiln and sintering methods . Sampling procedures and the geology of the significant shale units are discussed . Preliminary testing was conducted in a muffle furnace , and continuous tests were made in a 16 - inch by 14 - foot rotary kiln . The aggregate weighed 37.0 to 47.2 pounds per cubic foot . Concrete cubes employing the aggregate were tested to determine the qualities of the concrete . Compressive strength of the concrete using seven bags of cement per cubic yard , after autoclave curing for 6 hours , ranged from 3,600 to 5,850 pounds per square inch . Four samples made suitable lightweight aggregate in the laboratory rotary kiln . Four samples tested by sintering methods made unsatisfactory aggregate .

Nuclear explosive fracturing has been suggested as a method to make hard rock amenable to extraction by a modified block-caving method. To evaluate this possibility, conventional and nuclear blasting practices are discussed, underground mining methods for large deposits and their costs are described, and the cost of fracturing ore with a nuclear explosive and subsequent mining by a modified caving system is estimated and compared with both open-stope and block-caving mining costs. While the direct cost of fracturing the ore in hard rock with a nuclear explosive is less than with conventional explosives, additional costs imposed by the use of nuclear explosives may make their use unattractive for deep mining.

This Country Documentation Report presents the development of economic indices for Zambia for the period from 1970 through 1981. The work done through the Bureau of' Mines, Minerals Availability Program, under Contract number J0225001. This contract calls for the development of twelve index time series describing factor input costs in the mining sector of 95 countries. The twelve index time series describe the costs of: 1) mining wages, 2) construction wages, 3) equipment and repair parts, 4) bits and related steel, 5) timber and lumber, 6) fuel, 7) powder and blasting agents, 8) tires, 9) construction materials, 10) industrial materials, 11) transportation, and 12) electrical power. These indices combined with weight factors being developed by the personnel of the Minerals Availability Field Office (MAFO) of the Bureau of Mines in Denver, Colorado, will be used to perform instantaneous updates of all costs relating to the mining industry. The indices were developed primarily for use in the Bureau's Minerals Availability Program in assessing the worldwide availability of nonfuel minerals.

A high-B.t.u, gas can be synthesized by the catalytic methanation of a mixture of 2.5 to 3 parts of hydrogen to 1 part of carbon monoxide, obtained in the gasification of coal, using a steel catalyst followed by Raney nickel in a hot-gas-recycle system. Conversion of 99 percent of the H2+CO yields a fuel gas with a heating value of 983 to 1130 B.t.u. per cubic foot containing 78 to 96 percent methane, no carbon monoxide, and very small amounts of unsaturated hydrocarbons. With the steel catalyst alone, conversions were 85 to 90 percent, giving a fuel gas of 810 to 868 B.t.u, per cubic foot, or 847 to 975 B.t.u. on a C02-free basis. INTRODUCTION In 1948 the U.S, marketed production of natural gas was 5.15 trillion cubic feet; by 1958 it had reached 11.0 trillion cubic feet, a rate of growth of 8 percent annually. 4 5 Although demand is expected to increase less rapidly, by 1966 it may reach 16 trillion cubic feet, based on an estimated 4.7 percent annual increase.6

During the 1982 Bureau of Mines study, 55 lode and 17 placer claims were held in the RARE II area. An estimated 150 lode claims and 50 placer claim, have been located in the study area; five were patented. There are no mineral leases. Gold has been produced from 8 lode mines and stream gravels have been worked for placer gold at 4 sites. Two suction dredges were active in stream gravels, but no significant gravel bars are identified. Identified mineral resources in the Weaver Bally area are gold and byproduct silver. The identified resources are at the Globe Mine, where approximately 33,000 tons of indicated marginal reserves (2,000 tons in the RARE II area, and 31,000 tons in the adjacent proposed Trinity Alps Wilderness) contain 0.45 oz gold per ton and probably 0.1 oz silver per ton. There are an additional 150,000 tons of inferred marginal reserves (35,000 tons in the RARE II area, and 115,000 tons in the adjacent proposed wilderness) averaging 0.38 oz gold per ton and probably 0.1 oz silver per ton. There is high potential for additional resources at the Globe Mine.
