The electrical resistivity the coefficient of electrical resistivity the Hall coefficient, and the absolute thermoelectric power were determined in this Bureau of Mines investigation for nine compositions of the TiB2-CrB2 sub-system. The numerical values of the electrical resistivity and the thermo-electric power were greater for the intermediate compositions than for the end members. The absolute values of the Hall coefficients and the coefficients of electrical resistivity were less for the intermediate compositions than for the end members. The electrical resistivities and Hall coefficients were about the order of magnitude of most metals--from 34 to 202 microhm-cm and from about 0 to -23.3 X 10-4 cuP/coulomb. The thermoelectric power was somewhat greater than that of most metals--up to 15.6 microvolts per 0 C.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report discusses elastic wave velocity and attenuation behavior as an indicator for changes in load and structural integrity of coal samples. Measuring changes in compressional (P)-wave and shear (S)-wave attenuation and velocity under uniaxial and triaxial compression tests revealed their effectiveness for distinguishing changes in applied load and structural failure of samples. The velocity and attenuation values were used in further calculations such as ratios of P-wave to S-wave values, dynamic elastic constants, normalized velocities, and attenuation coefficients to reveal trends for loading and failure. The behavior of both P-wave and S-wave attenuation and velocity together define distinct and consistent phases of load change and failure for uniaxial and triaxial tests. The S-wave velocity and attenuation illustrate changing axial load and initial development of microfractures within the sample preceding structural failure more clearly than those of the P-wave. The attenuation and velocity ratios and dynamic elastic constants (except the bulk modulus) respond to closure of small preexisting fractures within the coal sample with initial loading to failure of coal samples. The attenuation coefficients and normalized velocities reveal trends similar to those shown by velocity and attenuation.

In the spring of 1943, when it was evident that the Tensleep sandstone in the Elk Basin field, Wyoming and Montana, held a large reserve of petroleum, Bureau of Mines engineers obtained samples of oil from the bottom of nine wells and analyzed them for such physical characteristics as the volumes of gas in solution, saturation pressures or bubble points, shrinkage in volume caused by the release of gas from solution, expansion of the oil with decrease in pressure, and other related properties. The composition of the gas in solution in the oil was studied. The pressures and temperatures existing in the reservoir and the productivity characteristics of the oil wells were determined. The data obtained indicate that the oil in the Tensleep reservoir of the Elk Basin field has unusually varying physical characteristics, such as a saturation pressure of 1,250 pounds per square inch absolute and 490 cubic feet of gas in solution in a barrel of oil at the crest of the structure, and a saturation pressure of 530 pounds per square inch absolute and 134 cubic feet of gas in solution in a barrel of oil low on the flanks. The hydrogen sulfide content of the 6a r; in solution in the oil varies from 18 percent for oil on the crest to 5 percent for oil low on the flanks of the structure. Of even greater significance is the fact that these and other variable characteristics of the reservoir oil are related to the position of oil in the structure. Many geologists and petroleum engineers have considered all the oil in a petroleum reservoir to have uniform physical characteristics and that equilibrium conditions prevailed in all underground accumulations of oil and gas. That such is not always so is borne out by the results of the study made by the writers.

Improved practice resulting from recent changes in the method of supplying compressed air and in pneumatic drilling equipment used in secondary drilling and in development work at the Morenci mine of the Phelps Dodge Corp., has resulted in improved safety conditions, as well as in a reduced cost per foot of drilling. A large stationary compressor installed outside the mining area and the compressed-air pipelines in the mine were replaced by portable compressor units. A self-propelled, self-contained drilling unit was obtained for drilling large footages where short moves were involved. Large wagon-drill units were replaced by faster and lighter drill machines and conventional bits by carbide insert bits. The safe practices employed in air drilling and in the related blasting and scaling operations have contributed to an excellent safety record at this mine. The complete sets of instructions listed in the company codes of safe practice aid materially in training employees.

Coke-pushing difficulties have been the subject of much controversy but relatively little scientific investigation. Nevertheless, continuing pushing difficulties can greatly decrease the life of a coke oven and should therefore be considered in the selection of the blend and operating conditions used for coke production. The present Federal Bureau of Mines investigation was undertaken to correlate results of previous investigators and to supplement these results to the limited extent practical by us of an experimental slot-type oven. To this end, pushing pressures have been determined routinely for Tuscaloosa oven tests conducted during the past 10 years. Nevertheless, the accumulated information remains incomplete in many respects, and in view of the recognized inadequacies of the data, publication is now undertaken only because of the scarcity of published information on this important problem and the discontinuation of carbonization studies with this oven.

"INTRODUCTION This report presents factual data obtained by the Bureau of Mines in the course of an investigation of the Antler mine in the Cedar Valley mining district, Mohave County, Ariz.The Antler property was first examined by Thomas L. Chapman, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, on December 18, 1943, and January 28, 1944. In June 1945, A. H. Wadsworth, Jr., and R. L. Griggs, geologists, Federal Geo¬logical Survey, examined the Antler mine and several other mines in the district. Both Chapman and Wadsworth recommended diamond drilling of the Antler property to determine the character and extent of ore deposition.In October 1946, the surface and underground workings were surveyed by George Huseman, Mining engineer, and T. M. Romslo, project engineer. The following month Eldred. D. Wilson, geologist of the Arizona Bureau of Mines, assisted by the project engineer, mapped the geology. Subsequently trails were built to drilling sites and diamond drilling started January 16, 1947. The project was completed April 25, 1947.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Division, Lowell B. Historically, underground mine rescue teams have received training only in the course of actual emergencies, or in simulated mine environments, usually on the surface, with placards to identify objects and hazards. Also, while U.S. Federal Regulations require all underground miners to walk escapeways and conduct fire drills every 90 days, this does not fully prepare them for the conditions that may be encountered in real escape situations, such as smoke filled entries. This paper describes technology and realistic training simulations that have been identified for the general workforce and mine emergency responders. Of all the technology evaluated by underground personnel, laser lights and lifelines were most beneficial in leading personnel to safety and out of the mine in smoke-filled passageways. These technological advancements can improve the state of readiness for rescue personnel and increase the chances of survival for personnel escaping from underground emergencies.

The USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) studied mines, prospects, and mineralized sites in the Roberts WSA (Wilderness Study Area) in 1984. The 15,090-acre WSA, located 35 miles northwest of Eureka, NV, is underlain by alluvial deposits of Quaternary age, extrusive and intrusive volcanic rocks of Oligocene through Miocene age, and metasedimentary rocks of Cambrian through Permian age. The Roberts Mountain Thrust fault cuts through the WSA, dividing the metasedimentary rocks into upper and lower plate rock units. One mine, the Kelley, which produced 397 tons of lead-zinc ore prior to 1940, and two prospects are within the WSA; no resources were identified. Exploration for precious metal deposits is presently being conducted in and adjacent to the WSA on large claim blocks. The study area contains six sites in and near these claim blocks that have anomalous gold and silver. Detailed exploration is needed to delineate resources. High purity silica rocks are present in the WSA. Barite, phosphate, oil shale, and vanadium occurrences just outside the WSA may extend into it, but no such occurrences were observed during the USBM study.

In this island, which is a Crown colony of the British Empire, and where remarkably extensive remains of ancient mining operations-- mainly for copper--exist, the mining law of Turkey governs, rith such modifications as were made necessary by the transfer of the country in 1878 from Turkey to Great Britain, and with such fer ameliorations thereof as have since been ordered by the local authorities. The Turkish law to which Van agenen refers is, no doubt, "2 Shaban, 1285," which though subsequently repealed with respect to Turkey is still in force in Cyprus, inasmuch as the mines regulations (amendment) law of 1925 "is to be read in connection with 2 Shaban, 1285" (articles 61 to 67 of which were repealed by the law of 1925): In the preparation of this digest; access was had to the mines regula- tions (amendment) Iaw, No. 5 of 1882; which Van Wagenen does not mention. Other Cyprian laws, passed since the publication of Van Wagenen's work in 1918, are the following: Eines regulations (amendment) law, 1925, No. 12 of 1925; mining-prospecting permits; notification, No. 539 of 1927; mines regu- lations 1926, No. 1006 of 1926; mines regulations (amendment) rules of court, 1926, No. 144 of 1926; mines regulations (amendment). 1a, 1928, ko. 3 of 1528 (as amended by No. 32 of 1928). Most of these làrs are concerned with the regulation of actual mining operation--safety and sanitary provisions; and, therefore, they ado little important information. The Cyprian Government's official publication says: It is considered that the laws regulating mining in Cyprus are inadequate and antiquated, and a thorough revision is necessary to bring them up to a standard of modern mining practice and to encourage mining ventures in the island. As a preliminary to this the mines regulations, 1926, were issued to govern the workings of the larger mines; and serious attention is now being given to the regulating of prospecting, quarries, machinery in mines, and generally to the bringing of mining in Cyprus into conformity with the other mining countries of the world.

"Mica" is a group name for a number of orthosilicates of aluminum with magnesium, ferrous iron, and the alkalies. They are characterized by their high reflection and a basal cleavage so well developed that they can be split into exceedingly thin laminae, which are more or less tough, elastic, and transparent, according to variety. Barium, manganese, lithium, chromium, titanium, boron, and ferric iron occur in same varieties. Eight distinct species of true mica, which appear in the following table, are recognized by mineralogists, but only the first five are of commercial importance. "This paper results from the research at The Pennsylvania State University into establishment of standard procedures for characterization of respirable coal dust performed by the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust and supported by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute at The Pennsylvania State University. The research performed within this particular project is oriented primarily toward standard methods of sampling and characterizing respirable coal mine dust underground so that the chemical, physical, and morphological characteristics are known and can be related to the incidence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) in Pennsylvania.The research was initiated by con¬ducting a search of the literature to determine what coal and geologic variables may be related to CWP. The effects of coal rank, free silica content, the mass of respirable dust, and the level of trace elements were the major variables studied. It seems to be evident that the free silica content, the rank of coal, and the mass of respirable dust are the major concerns in defining the causes of CWP. However, based on the literature survey, the authors have concluded that verification of the causes of CWP is a multivariate problem and must be analyzed in an appropriate statistical manner.The results of a multivariate analysis of ten trace elements recorded on Pennsylvania coals are presented. Five of these trace elements were found to be of use in differentiating one coalfield from the others. Of these five elements, chromium and zirconium showed a strong positive correlation with the rank of coal while strontium showed a negative correlation.The design of the field sampling work and its application in future research is the final topic discussed. The sampling plan is oriented toward continuous miner sections with eight-stage impactors as the collection equipment. All of the field work will be conducted in the coal measures of the Allegheny Formation and above with both dust and channel samples being collected in the same mines.Coal workers' pneumoconiosis has been an important topic of concern to miners, mining engineers, and epidemiologists for decades. The general cause of the dis¬ease, the inhalation of coal mine dust, is well known, but the specific coal and geologic variables that affect the incidence and severity of the disease are still subject to debate and study. The primary objective of this study is to identify those variables of Pennsylvania coals that contribute to the CWP problem. To accomplish this task, a field sampling program is to be conducted to relate the characteristics of the coal dust, the coal seam properties, and the geologic variables to the occurrence of CWP.The first year of this study has been involved with both a literature review and experimental work oriented toward identification of causal variables related to CWP. The results of this work are presented here along with plans for implementation of the findings in future research.The previous studies of CWP causal variables have been conducted by scientists, engineers, and medical personnel. Many different types of studies have been performed with emphasis on interpreting the effects of dust mass concentration, mineralogy of the coal, the rank of the coal, and trace element concentrations upon the incidence of CWP in various coalfields. Most of the research has been conducted during the last two decades, with the British Isles, West Germany, and the United States being the primary countries involved.The review of the literature was conducted to determine which variables are likely to warrant further study in Pennsylvania. Previous research studies have related CWP to free silica and other mineral content, the rank of coal, the mass of dust in the working place, and the trace elements in the coal and lung dust. In the following sections, each of these topics will be discussed and analyzed."

There are techniques for separating aluminum alloys from mixed scrap, but there are no efficient ways to separate wrought aluminum from cast aluminum. This Bureau of Mines report describes a novel technique for separating mixed aluminum alloy scrap into cast and wrought aluminum alloy fractions. The technique, which uses conventional heating, fragmentizing, and screening equipment, exploits differences in the mechanical properties of cast and wrought aluminum alloys at elevated temperatures. The cast alloys become brittle at high temperatures owing to intergranular melting of regions of eutectic composition. This melting begins to occur as the solidus temperature for each alloy is reached. Solidus temperatures for casting alloys generally range from 520° to 580° C, but are above 600° C for most wrought alloys. Thus, the casting alloys are easily fragmented while the wrought alloys remain ductile in the proper temperature range. Starting with a mixture containing approximately 80 pct cast and 20 pct wrought alloys, fractions of 100 pct cast and 98 pct wrought have been produced.

A conviction is growing that depressions and other adverse conditions are not entirely unavoidable if a knowledge of past achievements and shortcomings is intelligently, applied in shaping the course of industry. Mineral producers have available a source of such knowledge concerning; their industry in the statistical records of the United States Bureau of Mines, and by scanning, this increasingly exact history can obtain information on which to found a more stable future. This paper contains a brief history, covering more than 50 years, of the activities of the nonmetallic mineral industries as a group, followed by short histories of each of the more important commodities in which are noted the circumstances that lave influenced their development.

The Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace was operated successfully with anthracite metallurgical briquets . Tuyère pressures were higher and more erratic than for operations using coke , and furnace " hangs " occurred more frequently . Higher hot - blast temperatures were required to maintain the quality of the metal . By using higher hot blast temperatures , the fuel and production rates and slag volumes were comparable to those obtained for all - coke operation . The anthracite metallurgical briquets exhibited excellent mechanical strength and descended through the shaft of the furnace with little breakage or reduction in size .

San Juan County, which occupies the extreme northwest corner of New Mexico, contains large reserves of coal in the Fruitland formation and in the Menefee formation of the Mesaverde group. The coals have bright luster, are brittle, and break easily in handling. All mines sampled are in the La Plata-Fruitland and Rio Chaco districts of the Durango-Gallup coal field. This large area, all within San Juan County, contains numerous coal beds 5 to 15 feet thick. Ellis2/ mentions the Carbonero (Fruitland in this report) bed in the La Plata-Fruitland district attaining a thickness of 36 feet. This bed has been correlated with the Carbonero bed, formerly mined at Carbon Junction, near Durango, Colo. During the field investigation covered by this report, no operating mine in the Fruitland bed was working a bed thickness of more than 15 feet.

In 1984, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Black Rock Desert Wilderness Study Area (WSA) (NV-020-620), which covers approximately 319,000 acres in Humboldt County, Nevada. About 90% of the WSA is underlain by Pleistocene desert playa sediments; the remainder is comprised of Jurassic-Triassic metamorphic rocks, a Cretaceous intrusive and Tertiary volcanic rocks. Most of the WSA is within a down-dropped fault block of the Basin and Range physiographic province. No mines or evidence of major exploration were identified within the WSA; but five claim blocks within or adjacent to the WSA and zones of anomalous character as defined by the Bureau of Land Management were examined. No mineral resources were identified, but anomalous gold, silver, and indicator element content of samples taken near Pinto Hot Springs indicate resources may exist. Lithium content of samples from near-surface sediments on the desert playa is too low for resources, out geologic conditions are favorable for higher concentrations at depth. Occurrences of zeolites are not considered to be of commercial interest. Approximately 27,000 acres are held under geothermal lease, and most of the WSA is of interest for oil and gas. No evaluation of these commodities was made by the Bureau of Mines

The face area of a continuous mining section of an underground coal mine is the most dangerous area in the mine. Workers there are at nearly twice the risk of death or disabling injury than those in other parts of the mine. Despite extensive training of miners and improved equipment and mining methods, fatality and injury rates have remained constant during the past few years. It is clear that advanced research is necessary to apply new technologies or modify work procedures to solve the continuing problem of the loss of lives and the numerous injuries at the mine face. A U.S. Bureau of Mines research program is developing a Reduced-Exposure Mining System (REMS) that relocates personnel operating the mining machinery at the face away from the hazards to a nearby haven of relative safety. REMS uses proven technologies of computer automation and robotics to help control the operation of the mining machines at the face, while personnel are moved away to a nearby, safe control room. In this protected, well-ventilated environment, they can supervise or control the operation of the machines while viewing what the machine is doing using video and graphic display monitors.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations-in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Deparment of the Interior. It presents analytical data for 4,397 samples, representing the products of 130 companies. The samples were collected during December 1952 and January and February 1953. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past ten years is given on page 5.
