Five preparation plants employing concentrating tables for washing 3/8- inch to 0 raw coal were tested. Two of the plants were washing Pittsburgh-bed coal, two were washing Pocahontas-bed coal, and one was washing Elkhorn-bed coal. Samples of the feed to and products from the tables were collected over the normal operating shift. These samples were analyzed, and complete performance criteria were determined. The results of this study show that the concentrating table is an effective fine-coal cleaner even when operating at 40 percent over the recommended 10 tons per hour feed rate. Recovery efficiencies for the 3/8-inch to 200- mesh size fraction ranged from 97.3 to 99.3 percent; maximum yield errors and ash errors were 2.4 and 1.0 percent, respectively; probable errors ranged from 0.074 to 0.115 specific gravity units and error areas from 52 to 73 square centimeters. The amount of minus 200-mesh material in the water used for feed water and dressing water to the table had no significant effect on the sharpness of the separation achieved but did have an effect on the ash content of the clean- coal product. In the one plant studied, the substitution of fresh water for plant circulating water reduced the ash content of the clean coal by about 6 percentage points.

The monoclinic to tetragonal inversion of zirconium dioxide was studied by single-crystal X-ray methods, high-temperature X-ray diffractometry, and differential thermal analysis. The unusual features of the inversion, such as no definite transition Lperature, hysteresis, and athermal kinetics, were confirmed for powders who mean crystallite size was greater than 1,000 A. Samples of mean crystallite size below 1,000 A displayed classical kinetics, obeying a logarithmic rate law. A detailed mechanism based on Ubbelohde's theory of continuous phase transformations was proposed which is consistent with all the experimental facts.

This manual provides instructions for installling, operating, and maintaining protective canopies on the Joy Mfg. Co. cutter. These instructions are based upon two actual installations: one made in a mine and one in the factory. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopies are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other cutters with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other cutters and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

The characteristics of gas-phase detonations were observed in 20 instrumented firings within earthen tunnels, in 100 such detonations in a 24-in-diam by l63-ft-long steel pipe, and in about 200 smaller scale firings. Most of the fuels studied were representative hydrocarbons--acetylene, propane, gasoline, and a roughly equimolar mixture of methylacetylene, propadiene, and propane. In a pipe with two closed ends, the detonable limits were demonstrated to be very nearly the same as reported limits of flammability. The side-on impulses (pressures integrated over 200-msec intervals) were shown to be the same function of concentration regardless of whether deflagration or detonation had occurred. In a pipe with only the initiation end closed, the impulses of all fuel-air systems tended toward the same level when averaged over comparable ranges of fuel concentration; the lower pressures with saturated hydrocarbons were nearly compensated by longer durations of pressure transient. In all fuel-air systems, unexpectedly high impulses were obtained with slightly lean mixtures. In earthen confining structures, the impulse, of the explosion was efficiently converted into momentum of the failing wall. In the configurations studied, an earth velocity of about 20 fps was critical to overcome the soil's resistance to shear. The destructive effect was determined by gas pressure rather than by total energy release. The assignment of a "TNT equivalent" to an explosive gas mixture is discussed in terms of the confinement of the mixture.

A computerized moving average technique was developed to interpolate coal seam characteristics between sample points. The interpolative method coupled with multivariate regression analysis and simulation procedures was used to forecast coal properties not readily obtained from an analysis of drill core samples. Coal property forecasts were of two kinds: (1) specific mine property forecasts that are suitable for mine product control and yield a good approximation of the local variation along both the vertical and horizontal axes of the seam, and (2) regional estimates where much of the local seam variation is smoothed out, but the general trends are maintained. Forecasts of the volatile matter, ash, total sulfur, and the heating value for part of the Pittsburgh seam located in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia were in good agreement with independent evaluation data. Spatial configuration for preparation characteristics, particularly, the effect of crushing on sulfur release, low-and high-temperature carbonization properties, the Hardgrove grindability index, the coal hardness index, gasification variables, and hydrogenation factors were constructed for the same area of the Pittsburgh seam. These forecasts may be developed from drill core data collected in the exploration phase of mining. The results, which may take the form of a series of maps, are useful to mining, chemical, and combustion engineers, to economists and mine managers, as well as to coal users for mine design, economic analyses, energy forecasts, utilization studies, mine product control, and environmental control and programming.

Techniques for recovering scandium from uranium plant iron sludges and from wolframite concentrates are described. The best procedure found comprised (1) dissolution with sulfuric acid, (2) preliminary concentration by solvent extraction with a primary alkyl amine, (3) further enrichment and purification by a combination of ion exchange, solvent extraction, chemical precipitation, and calcination. Recovery of scandium from these raw materials, which contained 0.058 and 0.14 percent scandium, ranged from 83 to 90 percent in products analyzing 99.6 to 99.9 percent scandium oxide.

On the other hand, operating, costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The Bureau of Mines studied a pulsation damping device designed to smooth pulsating flow in personal respirable dust samplers. The effect on the pulsation dampener efficiency of six parameters was investigated, as follows: Volume, diaphragm elasticity, diaphragm area, center orifice area, inlet-outlet orifice area, and geometry (LID ratio). The results indicate that volume pre-dominates in determining snubber efficiency, while the other parameters become important at small volumes. Geometry has no effect on snubber efficiency. Criteria for an efficient pulsation dampener construction were obtained.

During investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, the Bureau of Mines collected 2-ton samples of 4 ores from 3 properties in northeastern Nevada. Laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of these ores to ore-dressing methods of concentration. The Caviglia-Vietti property is situated 11 miles southeast of Ely, White Pine County, Nev. The ore deposits are lenticular veins and irregular masses found in limestone fracture zones and along the contact of limestone and underlying shale. Two samples, of the ore were tested: Lot A, from the Vietti shaft, and lot B, from the. Caviglia shaft.

"The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. Measurements of surface magnetic field noise were made at various locations over the Geneva Coal Mine near Price, Utah, on June 12, 1973. The locations selected were on the surface over emergency locator beacons underground at depths between 3S0 meters (1150 ft.) and 488 meters (1600 ft.). The surface terrain where these measurements were made was mountainous, and access was difficult. There were no power lines within several miles, and the weather was clear; therefore, the magnetic noise levels were about as low as will normally occur. Results of measurements of distant sferics indicate rather sharp cutoff frequencies below which broadband, impulsive noise is attenuated. The mechanism of propagation for this noise above the daytime cutoff frequency of 3500 Hz and the nighttime cutoff frequency of 1700 Hz is deduced to be a waveguide formed by the D or F layers of ionosphere as an upper plane and the earth as a lower plane.

The gold that is not recovered by a particular process is refractory to that process. A study to determine how the refractory gold is associated in the ore constituents usually indicates the needed improvement in the process or additional methods for bettering recovery. In preliminary work, segregation of the various minerals, gangue or impurities, and data showing the reactions of each in the recovery method readily confines the refractory gold to a certain part on which extensive research can be directed. In this dissecting plan, the microscope is an important aid in locating the refractory gold but should be supplemented by chemical tests. Each ore is an individual problem until the association of the gold has been determined. Knowing the problem through the interfering minerals or elements, the solution often is only the application of part of a former known practice as an auxiliary or additional feature. In the treatment plan for most gold ores, it has been the custom to try each of the usual recovery methods or combinations thereof, accepting the best results on a basis of the lowest cost. A better plan includes knowledge of the association of the gold and the various minerals from which it is to be recovered. This presents reasonable foresight into the problems that should be expected and permits some provision for avoiding probable difficulties. The preliminary work should include: Determination of the percentage of free gold with classification showing size of gold particles to be expected; determination of the percentage of gold associated with each mineral and whether it be freed from the mineral by crushing; and an analysis of representative samples of the ore to include other valuable minerals and the form in which they occur.

This Bureau of Mines report describes and compares the procedures, capital investments, and operating costs of rotary and in-hole motor drilling techniques used to drain methane gas from the Pittsburgh Coal- bed in an underground mine located in southwestern Pennsylvania. A timestudy was conducted during the drilling of each of two boreholes, and the data were collated to serve as a base for comparing drilling procedures and operating costs. Findings indicate that drilling with an in-hole motor offers four advantages over rotary drilling; namely, an increase in drilling productivity, fewer worker-hours required, ease of maintaining vertical and horizontal bit trajectory, and less expensive drilling cost per foot of borehole.

Preliminary to an experimental study of selected physical properties of helium and related gases) the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center conducted a data-gathering literature survey. This report combines the results of the 1961-63 literature search into a usable format. The data accumulated on the physical properties are presented in tables and graphs. The data in the tables were chosen for exact representation and comparison of specific values. An attempt was made to select the most reliable and consistent value available for a given property without extensively analyzing each source reference. The methods of evaluation are discussed later. The graphs show trends and anomalies which may be obscure in tabular form. The present methods of appraising the long-range performance of oil reservoirs are based upon physical properties of the crude oil and the permeability of the reservoir rock. By means of these methods the performance of a reservoir may be estimated throughout its entire life. Before these methods were used, the future performance was estimated mostly by extrapolating pressure-decline curves -a method that is satisfactory for extrapolating only for a short period into the future. One factor that affects satisfactory long-range prediction of reservoir performance is the extent to which small changes in the physical properties of the oil and differences in the choices of relative permeability influence the calculated oil recovery. Selection of the physical properties of the samples to represent those of the oil and rock for the entire reservoir is difficult. This report is concerned with the error in calculated recoveries that may result from these inherent difficulties.

Laboratory batch flotation tests were conducted on copper converter slags to evaluate the relative merits of recovering copper from slow-cooled versus water-quenched slags. Three slags containing 1.6, 5.0, and 6.6 percent copper were used. More than 90 percent of the copper was recovered in a rougher concentrate leaving a 0.2- to 0.3-percent copper tailings when treating slow-cooled slag. Lower recoveries and higher copper tailings ranging from 0,5 to 0.6 percent copper were obtained from quenched slag. Grindability studies were made on the respective heat-treated slags. Quenched slags proved more difficult to grind than slow-cooled slags. Cost studies showed that (1) the cost of slow cooling and crushing off-sets any advantages of higher copper recoveries from slow-cooled slag, and (2) water-quenched slag, which requires no crushing preparatory to grinding, could be treated more economically. Costs based on processing 1,000 tons of slag per day would be $1.85 per ton for quenched slag versus $2.37 per ton for slow-cooled slag.

When mechanical ventilation is to supersede the natural ventilation of a mine it is desirable to determine what resistance the mine as a whole offers to the flow of air in order to specify properly the limiting duties of a ventilating fan. The relation of pressure to volume of flow for the mine as a whole may be calculated from experimental data, or it may be determined directly by measurements of volume of flow and the natural draft pressures causing flow; but in both methods the determinations are affected by many variables. With the intention of making a practical application of both methods, a small metal mine in process of development at Butte, Mont., was selected by the writers as the object of experiments planned to compare the mine resistances determined by measurements of natural draft and volume of flow with those calculated from experimental data. Four sets of teats were made with natural draft in October, 1925, December, 1925, April, .1926, and September to December, 1926; the last set consisted of a series of weekly observations. DESCRIPTION OF MINE The mine selected for the experiments was a typical vertical shaft metal mine in the development stage. No stoping had been done, and ventilation was confined to shafts, crosscuts, drifts, and raises. Figure 1 is a dia¬grammatic sketch of the main openings. All were timbered with full sets on approximately 5-foot centers. The shaft compartments were 4 by 4.5 feet, and one in each shaft was partly blocked by staggered manway landings. A pump column in the upcast shaft was discharging about 280 gallons a minute of water at 70° F. from the 1,000-foot level. The drifts were slightly sinuous, but the crosscuts were exceptionally straight and uniform in area; both drifts and crosscuts were about 5 by 7 feet in cross section. Many types of heavy equipment used in the mining and construction industries use enclosed cabs to protect equipment operators from dust and noise exposure. Normally, when the equip- [ ] ment is new, manufacturers' deigned controls are effective at keeping the operator's exposure at acceptable level. However, as equipment becomes older and many components of the enclosure deteriorate, such as gaskets and seals, the effectiveness of the enclosed cab can be greatly reduced. This can cause excessive and dangerous exposures to respirable dust, especially when the ore or overburden contains crystalline silica.

The U.S. underground coal miner faces a continuing hazard from the fall of roof. At the root of many injuries and fatalities are weak or defective roof strata. Throughout mining history, millions of miles of entry have provided exposure of every conceivable geologic roof hazard. This report describes the geologic origin, association, and potential danger from the most common hazards. Discussions of weak rock include drawrock, rider coals, head coal, stackrock, and stream valley effects. Discontinuities, or roof defects, are described including, clay veins, slickensides, joints, and paleochannels. A number of examples from U.S. coalfields are used to document geologic structure and associated hazards. Roof fall analysis is a methodology used by NIOSH for hazard recognition and prevention; its application and benefit to the industry are discussed.

A series of alkyl-dithiocarbamic acid amine salts was prepared and tested as collector for slimed lead minerals contained in the waste material from a commercial lead ore concentrator. The reagents, members of a homologous series differing only in the number of alkyl radicals in their structure, were prepared by reacting stoichiometric amounts of primary amines and carbon disulfide in a cold alcohol solution. Subsequent purification was by recrystallization from absolute ethyl alcohol solution. Evaluation was through froth flotation of a mill tailing containing 0.2 percent lead. Results show that maximum recovery (38 percent) was obtained with the reagent containing 8 alkyl radicals, but that maximum rougher concentrate grade (4.8 percent) was obtained with the reagents of intermediate number of radicals.
