It is with some diffidence that I venture to address the Montreal Section of the Society of Chemical industry on the subject of motor fuel from coal at a time when crude petroleum is produced in greater quantities than at any time in history, and at a time when the known reserves exceed all expectations, even the optimistic estimates of the Committee of Eleven of the American Petroleum Institute. Not only are new fields being discovered in America a -an embarrassing frequency but sources outside of the North American Continent show, unmistakable signs of adding materially to the world's sources of oil. Were it not for the tremendous scientific and technical importance of the work done in the past few years in transforming coal into liquid motor fuels, I should prefer to let this subject rest until a more propitious time, such as prevailed some years ago, when the gasoline consumption curve was rising rapidly and the production curve was slowing in its upward rise. That was the period which stimulated the researches which resulted in tetra ethyl lead and anti-knock gasolines on this side of the Atlantic and in methanol, synthetic gasoline and hydrogenation of coal on the other side. Some of you will recall a symposium on Motor Fuels and Oil Conservation held at the Chemists' Club n New York in September; 1925. Dr. R. L. Brown and I presented a paper at this meeting on "Complete Utilization of Coal and Motor, Fuel, in which we pointed out that coal was the most likely raw material source of gasoline substitutes if and when needed. We grouped the present and future, processes' for obtaining motor fuel from coal in three classes, namely:

The provisions of this code are minimum provisions and are designed to minimize hazards to life and property in and about underground coal mines where electrical equipment and circuits installed used. They indicate the Steps necessary in the selection, installation, operation, inspection, and maintenance of electrical equipment and circuits to obtain proper safeguards in reducing electric shock, fire, explosion and other hazards. Surface as well as underground installations were considered in formulating the code and, unless otherwise stated, each provision applies equal to both underground and surface installations. This code does not apply to buildings and installations not directly connected with mining operations, nor does apply to strip-mining operations.]

"Investigations in the Federal Bureau of Mines Experimental coal mine near Pittsburgh, Pa., have shown that high-expansion foam containing at least 0.2 ounce of water per cubic foot of volume is effective in controlling exper-imental underground coal, oil, or wood fires. Some of the fires were extinguished, but more of the coal and wood fires were brought under enough control to permit direct attack with water or other extinguishing agent or loading the hot material into cars. The largest controlled experimental fire, which burned about 5 hours before attack, was in a coalbed 5 feet wide, 10 inches thick, and 100 feet long. The greatest distance foam was transported to control a fire was 1,010 feet.An incipient fire should be attacked promptly with water, rock dust, or other approved and readily available extinguishing agents. Where heat, roof falls, and smoke prevent direct approach, the more involved procedure of using foam may be advantageous. The effectiveness of the foam in controlling a deep coated fire of considerable extent H,vet to be proved by actual trials in aSome hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and methane gases are generated when a fire is attacked with foam. Calculations showed that in experimental fire tests an explosive mixture could form; however, this would occur only within a narrow range of combustible gas-air mixtures not likely to be found in practice. The principal explosion hazards are due to generation of gases by the foam, localized build-up of normally liberated methane, and volatiles liberated by the coal during heating. The quantity of combustible gases generated by the action of the foam on the fire is about the same as that when an equivalent amount of water is applied."

During the investigations of the occurrence of manganese in the western United States, the Bureau of Mines received a 100-pound sample of manganese ore from the Doyle-Smith property, Yuma County, Ariz. Laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of this ore to standard ore-dressing methods of concentration to produce a marketable-grade product. The Doyle-Smith claims are in northern Yuma County, within 15 miles of the Artillery Peak deposit. The lot of ore used in the test work was taken from the outcrop of a large, massive, irregular bed of oxide manganese ore found on the claims.

This report describes investigations of the economic merits of multiple zone mining and beneficiation versus selective mining of altered Western phosphate rock. The same deposit was considered in both instances and it was assumed that the grade of selectively mined ore was comparable to the grade of the concentrate from beneficiation. The beneficiating scheme used for the investigation was one proved by small continuous circuit operation. All economic factors were found to favor multiple zone mining plus beneficiation. Capital requirements and production costs were lower, and production life of the deposit was extended 4.5 times. The concentrate from beneficiation would be a uniform high-quality feed for acidulation and would be low in stable metallic oxide (R203) content. Such a feed would permit improved plant operating control, and the low R203 would promote more rapid filtration and minimize sludge formation in the phosphoric acid. With the proposed treatment, the concentrate produced by flotation from this deposit would cost about 1.5 times as much per ton as the concentrate produced by classification sizing. Therefore, inclusion of a flotation step in treatment schemes requires an economic analysis for each ore deposit.

A comprehensive study of the effects of hydraulically fracturing water-flood wells in Oklahoma has been made by the Federal Bureau of Mines. This report presents results of that study and an analysis of some of the factors governing the results of fracture treatment on waterflood properties. Originally, hydraulic fracturing was used to stimulate oil production from old wells producing by primary methods, and its application to water-flooding was regarded with skepticism by most producers. However, since 1953 the number of fracture treatments of both oil and input wells in waterfloods has increased steadily. Hydraulic-fracture treatments in waterfloods have generally been successful in stimulating production from oil wells and increasing the rate of injection into input wells. Hydraulic fracturing has enabled several producers to turn probable failures into economically successful projects.

Knowledge of the types of naturally occurring sulfur compounds in petroleum is of both theoretical and practical interest to petroleum chemists and geologists. This knowledge has been extended by the identification of 77 sulfur compounds, including 36 thiols, 23 chain sulfides, and 18 cyclic sulfides in a 111° to 150° C boiling range distillate of Wasson, Texas, crude oil. The characterization procedure used in separating and identifying these compounds included isothermal distillation, vacuum fractionation, liquid-solid chromatography (alumina adsorption), chemical treatment, gas-liquid chromatography, microdesulfurization, and infrared analysis. The procedural steps described represent a systematic method of sulfur compound analysis considered applicable for determining the nature and concentration of the sulfur constituents present in any straight-run petroleum distillate of the above-boiling range.

The South Asian countries of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ceylon, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim arc to varying-degrees just beginning to achieve significant economic and industrial development. These countries are richly endowed with certain mineral resources, and development of these resources is being accelerated. In 1965, the mineral industry remained a relatively small sector of the region's economy, accounting for only about 1 percent of its estimated gross national product of $62,528 million. Nevertheless, the estimated $630 million total value of minerals produced in South Asia during 1965 represented an increase of nearly 15 percent t over that of 1964. India continued as the dominant mineral producer of the region, accounting for 85 percent of the total value of all minerals produced ill 1965. India increased its output of iron ore, manganese, mica, coal, and petroleum. Pakistan accounted for 13 percent of the value of the region's output and recorded increased output of iron ore, chromite, coal, natural gas, and most other minerals. The small mineral industry of Ceylon attained remarkable growth in the production of ilmenite, graphite, and gem stones. The mineral industry of Afghanistan remained relatively insignificant, although development of large known resources of natural gas was continued, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim produced no commercially significant quantities of minerals in 1965.

Experimental data were obtained from two medium-duty diesel engines derated to qualify for use in underground mines. Gaseous and particulate emissions from these engines were measured and results provide information on the effect of exhaust treatment devices on the emissions. The devices in the study were a catalyst, a particulate trap, and an exhaust gas cooler of the water scrubber type. Emission levels of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons were observed to be very low in comparison with emission levels of comparable engines in full-rated operation. Oxides of nitrogen and benzo(a)pyrene content of the exhaust also were found to be somewhat low in comparison with previous findings. For particulate reduction, the combination of a particulate trap and a scrubber was observed to be the most effective combination tried; in some cases, over 60 pct particulate reduction was effected by the trap-scrubber combination.

[The growing importance of the Sundence (Jurassic) formation an a source of oil, in the Rocky Mountain area has prompted the making of a series of porosity determinations of core samples collected. from the reservoir sands of the Lance Creek oil field, Niobrara. County, Wyo. These analyses are preliminary to a stud of fluid and energy relations in the Basal Sundance reservoir of that field, and the determinations of porosity will be used in subsequent studies requiring, calculations of the volumetric capacity of the reservoir and estimation of the reserves of oil and gas. However, the porosity characteristics an of the Sundance sands in the Lance Creek field are factory that affect the solution of many current practical problems of development and operation. Primarily for that reason but also because it is recognized that porosity values of different oil-production sands are of widespread interest throughout the industry, the results of the initial work have been presented in tabular and graphic form with no attempt to evaluate their significance as they relate to the production history of the field.]

Many materials including carbides, silicides, phosphides, borides, nitrides, oxides, and metals were studied by the Bureau of Mines as potential fuel cell catalysts for electroreduction of oxygen in a 1[N]H2S04 electrolyte. The objective of this study was to assess the potential of abundant, low-cost materials as substitutes for platinum or to increase the catalytic efficiency of platinum. Several compounds were rejected because of their reaction in the corrosive environment of the oxygen electrode. However, some of the remaining were the most active catalysts. Activity of carbides such as tungsten carbide could be improved by doping with platinum-group metals, by varying stoichiometry, or by sputtering on a layer of platinum. While no catalysts were found with activity as high as platinum, some compounds were shown to be deserving of further investigation.

This is a progress report of an investigation by personnel of the Bureau of Mines from June to September 1951 to introduce preservative chemicals into growing timber. It also describes in detail the impregnation process, known as the collar method, developed by the United States Department of Agriculture2/ Twenty-eight trees were treated by this method, and a complete record was kept of each individual tree and of each timber cut from it. These timbers have been placed in a coal mine, and their tendency to decay is compared to that of adjacent untreated sets. Although several years will be required before final conclusions can be drawn, this report explains the appearance and encouraging results of the treated timber to date. Also included are some comparative costs of untreated timber, treated timber by the commercial pressure method, and treated timber by the collar method. INTRODUCTION In the hope of increasing the useful life of cut timber, experiments to impregnate growing trees with wood-preservative chemicals by utilizing the natural flow of sap have been carried on for centuries. None of the various methods used in these experiments has ever gained any widespread use because they have been commercially impractical.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects world-wide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the U.S. Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in a systematic evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases. These studies are designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy facilitating the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena. This report is the third of a series3/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant systems. The equilibrium composition of the products of combustion and the adiabatic flame temperatures of specified oxyacetylene systems have been computed.

A Helix Pressure Gauge to Indicate roof bolt loads was designed, fabricated and field tested. The gauge indicated loads between 3,000 and 15,000 pounds with a ± ten per cent error. The coat of fabrication of the gauge was estimated to be $3.39 including an assumed overhead and profit per indicator for a series production of 5,000 unite. The unit can be read on a bolt to within ± 1,000 pounds load from a distance of twenty feet.

From a scientific point of view , the zircon is by far the most remarkable of the gem stones , and a satisfactory solution of the problems offered by its characters and constitution has not yet been made . 3 Three distinct forms have been recognized , differing in specific gravity , hardness , optical properties , behavior when heated , and color.4 ( See section of this paper entitled "Description and Properties . " ) Zircon as a gem stone has not been as well known as its properties warrant . It is one of the most brilliant of the precious stones (having a high refractive index) . The colorless zircon rivals the diamond in brilliance and fire play to such an extent that a judgment based entirely upon optical inspection might be erroneous . In the opinion of gem authorities , the colored stones likewise have much merit . The blue zircon ( " Starlite" ) was so named by Kunz because of its resemblance to a " star twinkling in the night . " Another gem authority describes the leaf- green stone as one possessing a restful beauty , the red stone as having a certain ( though somber) grandeur , and the golden-yellow stone as being unsurpassed in magnificence . The slowness with which the zircon , a stone frequently mentioned in ancient literature , has come into use in modern jewelery may be owing to the fact that authorities differ as to whether the colorless and the blue zircons are found as such in nature or are treated stones . Any treated stone , although the material of which it is composed may be essentially genuine , has been considered a deception . However , according to Kunz , " Starlite is now sold over the entire world ; never has anything been so well introduced. "7 Dr. Foshag, mineral curator of the United States National Museum, states that the first allotment of zircons to enter the United States was obtained in 1921 from Siam ( through France ) for scientific or museum purposes and that four or five years later the stones were adopted by the jewelers of this country . Retail jewelers are displaying the colorless type and the blue stones , especially , in finger rings , necklaces , and like ornaments . Fine crystals have been used somewhat extensively in jewelling watches and as supports for the edges of fine balances . At one time zircons were though to be appropriate in mourning jewelery .

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. "The in vivo toxicity of vanadium(V) has been found to correlate with the depletion of cellular glutathione and related non-protein thiols. With a view to understanding the mechanism for this observation, we have investigated the oxidation of glutathione, cysteine N·acetylcystcinc and pcnicil· lamine by vanadium(V), using electron spin resonance (ESR) and ESR spin trapping methodology. The spin trap used was 5,5-dimethyl-l-pyrroline I-oxide (DMPO). It is found that the oxidation of these thiols by vanadium(V) generates the corresponding thiyl radicals and vanadilim- (IV) complexes. The results suggest that free radical reactions play a significant role in the depletion of cellular thiols by vanadium(V) and hence in vanadium(V) toxicity. 1. INTRODUCTIONThis communication reports on the identification of thiyl radicals formed as intermediates in the reaction of vanadium(V) with glutathione (GSH) and related nonprotein thiols. This study was undertaken because the biochemical mechanism of vanadium toxicity is still not fully understood,. despite being a topic of current research activity [1-20). As to possible clues, it is known that vanadium is most toxic when administered in its pentavaient state [21), and that vanadium(V) administration into laboratory mice reduces cellular levels of NAD(P)H and GSH [22). While the oxidation of NAD(P)H by vanadium has been studied extensively [16-20), that of glutathione and related non-protein thiols has been paid less attention. On the other hand, GSH and related thiols are important cellular antioxidants [23). Their functions include decomposing lipid peroxides and protecting cell membranes [23-25). Thus any reduction in the cellular contents of such nonprotein thiols after vanadium exposure may result in the accumulation of lipid peroxides which might ultimately lead to tissue injury. With a view of finding the mechanism for this thiol depletion process, we have investigated reactions of non-protein thiols with vanadium(V). Particular attention has been paid to the detection of thiyl radicals, since it has been postulated [l] (but not experimentally proven) that the glutathionyl radical (GS·) might be an intermediate in the reaction between vanadium(V), NADH and GSH. We have used electron spin resonance (ESR) and ESR spin trapping methodology for investigating the reactions of GSH, cysteine, N-acetylcysteine and penicillamine with vanadium(V). The results show that the corresponding thiyl radicals are indeed formed in the one-electron reduction of vanadium(V) by all of the above mentioned thiols."

According to reports as of January 1, 1931, the total daily charging capacity of the cracking plants, hoth completed and under construction, in the United States amounted to 1,950,781 "barrels, an increase over the previous year of 14 per cent. The total daily capacity of the operating plants amounted to 1,594,990 "barrels, or 82 per cent of the grand total, the capacity of the in¬ operative plants was 244,661 "barrels, or 12 per cent of the total, while the capacity of the plants under construction amounted to 111,130 "barrels, or 6 per cent. In comparison with a year ago, these data indicate a decline in the total capacity of the plants "being "built "but show material increases in the capacity of "both the other two classes. The increase in total inoperative capacity and the decline in construction in 1930 undoubtedly resulted from un¬ satisfactory economic conditions. The total number of cracking units completed or under construction on January 1, 1931, totaled 1,863 as compared with 2,002 the previous year and with a high of 2,559 on June 1, 1926. During the period between June 1, 1926, and January 1, 1931, the total charging capacity of the cracking plants has more than doubled, but the number of units has shown a material decline. This condi¬ tion has been brought about largely through the dismantling of many Burton still of small capacity and through the tendency to increase the size of the new units The "largest unit that can be identified in this survey has a daily charging capacity of 10,000 barrels, but undoubtedly there are some that would exceed this in size. Texas, with a total of 575,300 barrels, ranked far ahead of the other States in charging capacity, and was followed in order by California, Indiana, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. Indiana, with only five refineries, ranked third in cracking capacity, which illustrates the importance of the Chicago district as a gasoline-producing center. Not all of the States showed a gain in capacity during the year; in fact, four of them, namely Illinois, Louisiana, New York, and Oklahoma, reported a decline.
