"The ceramic industry of the United States has a total yearly manufactured product of nearly half a billion dollars, despite large foreign importation.After careful investigation of the industry by the Bureau of Mines, it is the belief of those in charge that the usefulness of the industry can be greatly enlarged and the importations greatly lessened through the development of processes that will lead to a greater and better development of the ceramic resources of the United States. This will result in a greater industry with more men employed than ever before, and perhaps a world's supremacy in ceramic trade matters.Investigations in behalf of the ceramic industry are being made at the Bureau of Mines experiment ceramic station at Columbus, Ohio, under the supervision of R. T. Stall, superintendent, who reports a number of instances of practical, beneficial cooperation between the industry and the station during the last fiscal year.Graphite to Crucibles:Prior to 1914, practically all graphite crucibles manufactured in the United States were made from Ceylon graphite bonded with German Klingenberg clay. It was the general belief among graphite crucible manufacturers and users that good crucibles could not be made from American bond clays and graphites.Graphite crucibles were essential for melting certain alloys and special steels urgently needed for the manufacture of war materials. The demand for such metals was so great that it created an unprecedented demand for graphite crucibles.After the European war began no Klingenberg clay could be shipped out of Germany. However, it was fortunate for the cyucibly makers that they had large stocks of Klingenberg clay on hand. When the stock of Klingenberg clay became exhausted, it was necessary for the credible makers to turn their attention to American clays. There were no data or other information available to guide the crucible makers in the selection of good bond clays for their crucibles. It was necessary for them to select their clays more or less by ""guess"", which resulted in the period of service or life of graphite crucibles being shortened 15 to as much as 60 per cent."

The Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center has developed a computer program for solving two-phase equilibria data for binary mixtures and for evaluating thermodynamic functions of interest, including all critical points. This computer program was used to calculate equilibrium points on the PVTu surface for the helium-nitrogen system as predicted by the Van der Waals equation of state. Numerical values are tabulated and illustrations are presented for 1,279 equilibrium points and for quantities needed to construct Ponchon diagrams. Equilibrium ratios as a function of pressure at constant temperature and of temperature at constant pressure-are also shown graphically. In addition, saturated partial molal volume and partial molal enthalpy data are given. It is shown that the Van der Waals helium-nitrogen system exhibits retro-grade condensation of the second type for liquid helium concentrations of about 0.07 mole fraction or less and pressures below about 45 atm. It is also shown that the critical point is at a -maximum value of pressure (at constant temperature) and of temperature (at constant pressure).

Real gross national product3 (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.2% in the fourth quarter compared with a revised 4.3% rate in the third quarter, according to the most recent estimates released by the U.S. Department of Commerce (table 1). Expanding inventories, Government purchases of goods and services, residential fixed investment, and a narrowing of the trade deficit fueled the growth. Significantly reduced consumer demand led to the heavy inventory growth. Almost half of the buildup in inventories consisted of automobiles because consumers reduced purchases when Detroit ceased most incentive programs in late summer. Reduced consumer demand also affected imports, however, and the narrowing of the trade deficit resumed after widening in the third quarter. Nonresi- [ ] dential fixed investment also declined after a strong gain in the third quarter. On a year-to-year basis, the economy grew at an inflation-adjusted rate of 2.9%, the same as that of 1986. However, on a fourth-quarter-to-fourth-quarter basis, the real growth reached 3.8%, the highest growth since 19M, and exceeded the Reagan Administration's estimate of 3.4%. Rising merchandise exports accounted for about one-third of the growth in GNP for all of 1987 and are expected to continue to grow as domestic manufactures benefit from the lower value of the dollar vis-a-vis other major trading country currencies. Consumer demand became a less important factor of economic growth, but employment continued to grow (table 2), and civilian unemployment declined by 0.9 percentage points (December to December) as the industrial sector geared up to increase exports. Inflation, as measured by the fixed-weighted GNP price index, remained low at 3.4%.

Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7516, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was published in October 1949 to aid in estimating investment and operating costs of processes for manufacturing synthetic liquid fuels. Development of such processes by the Bureau of Mines was authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. This bibliography included references to and abstracts of publications appearing from. 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7705, Supplemental Bibliography on Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants, was prepared to cover the area from September 1948 through June 1952.

The Bureau of Mines established geologic factors affecting the mining of the Lower Kittanning coalbed to aid in coalbed minability studies and examined the occurrence of "wants" (places where coal is missing) and types of unstable roof rock strata. Trends established from mapping, including prediction of areas of high methane emissions, were extrapolated to unmined areas. "Wants" in the coalbed are of two types: Erosional and depositional. Erosional features occur where north-south-trending sand-filled channels cut into the coalbed. Variations in depositional environments have caused the coalbed to "split" into several thinner units. Slickensides, commonly indicative of unstable roof, are adjacent to and on the underside of sandstone channels; they were caused by differential compaction and by soft sediment sliding along the contact between the sandstone and adjacent shale. The frequency of unstable roof also increases where the interval between the Middle and Lower Kittanning coalbed is less than 30 feet. The zones of weakness at the contacts above and below the Middle Kittanning coalbed are the controlling factors for unstable roof in these strata. Methane emissions from the coalbed are controlled primarily by depth, fracture permeability, and rank of coal. Local geologic factors are coalbed thickness, associated rock strata, structure, and proximity to outcrop.

"INTRODUCTION The potash mineral receiving the most attention in the newly discovered. New Mexico-Texas potash district near Carlsbad, N. M. is sylvite (potassium chloride). Sylvite contains more potassium than any other mineral. Merchantable high-grade deposits have been found, and those of lower grade may be enriched to a high degree of purity by refining methods. Deposits containing sylvite were the first to be developed and axe the only ones being mined.However, many other minerals that contain potash occur in the salt beds of the Carlsbad District. Of these the more important are polyhalite, carnallite, langbeinite, leonite, and kainite. The nature of the deposits and their mineralogy have been described in detail by members of the United States Geological Survey. 4/Langbeinite, although not so abundant in these deposits as carnallite and has particular interest because the potash is in the form of the sulphate and as such commands a premium in terms of K20 unit. In broadening the utility of spectrochemical methods 9f analysis of ore samples 3,4/ a procedure employ in the total energy method, has been adapted to determination of silver in ores. Silver is the first element in group I of the periodic table to be studied in the Bureau of Mines program. Two silver lines in the spectrum, Ag X\ 3280.683 and 3382.89lR were used in the study, and the problems that had to be overcome were: (1) Influence of extraneous elements on line intensities, (2) preparation of standard curves, and (3) improvement in equipment and technique to increase accuracy. Sodium, potassium, sulfur, selenium, iron, cobalt, and nickel yielded low intensities and hence low results, particularly on the samples high in silver, but addition of 60 percent or more of lime counteracted these effects. One calibration curve must be used for samples low in silver and other for those high in silver. The chocks with fire assaying were close enough for preliminary or exploratory investigations, and the method is much more rapid.

The pegmatite investigations at the Rapid City, S. Dak., Experiment Station during; the pact 3 years have been primarily a study of recovering beryl from nonlithium-bearing pegmatite rock by continuous-testing methods. Beryl concentrates containing 25 to 88 percent beryl were produced from rock that ranged in beryl content from 0.1 to 2.5 percent. The beryl recovery ranged upward from 70 percent but averaged better than 80 percent. Although promising results have been obtained with flotation methods for upgrading these concentrates to standard specifications, additional work is needed to improve and simplify the procedure. In addition, it was demonstrated that several potentially useful coproducts could also be recovered from pegmatite rock. The principal coproducts were mica, feldspar, and quartz. A heavy-mineral product also was made from pegmatites containing tin, tantalum, and columbium. The recovery if these minerals in products meeting the specifications of the commercial users has been reserved for future study. The investigations also included studies on extraction of beryllium from both high-grade beryl and flotation concentrates of medium beryllium content. The procedure investigated consisted of sintering beryl or beryl flotation concentrates with limestone, acid curing the resulting sinter with sulfuric acid to dissolve the beryllium, and water leaching to extract the beryllium. Over 90 percent of the beryllium was extracted by this procedure. Most of the optimum conditions and quantities of reagents were determined for dissolving the beryllium. As aluminum and iron also were taken into solution by the acid, further research is needed on methods of recovering high-grade beryllium salts from the solutions containing these elements.

Ignition of hybrid coal dust - methane - air mixtures by hot- turbulent - pulsedgas jets was investigated . The turbulent jets were generated by explosions in a primary chamber of stoichiometric mixtures of methane , oxygen , and nitrogen . The hot - gas ignition apparatus provided an adjunct means of testing , on a small scale , the type of ignition that exists in large - scale galleries or in coal mines . = coal particle The temperature Ignition variables were channel diameter , channel length , size , fuel concentration , and temperature of the hot - gas jet . of the hot jet was varied by changing the oxygen indices ( OI ) of the primary explosion mixtures . Coal dust having approximately 37 percent volatile matter was used . 02 O2ટ + N₂ The hybrid coal dust - methane - air mixtures required higher jet temperatures ( higher oxygen indices ) for ignition than the single fuel component methane - air mixtures . Methane in air concentrations less than the lower flammable limit of methane could be ignited in the presence of coal dust if the jet temperatures were increased . A specific explosion transmission ( ignitability ) curve existed for each coal dust concentration . The total fuel concentrations at the lower limit of each ignition curve was always close to or greater than stoichiometric , indicating that not all the coal dust was involved in the ignition .

Although the United States has been the largest consumer of tin, only a small quantity of tin was produced or. the North American Continent during peace times, and thy deficiency was made UP by foreign imports. Because the most important sources of tin wore cut off by the war with Japan, it became necessary to increase imports from South America and Africa and, if possible, develop domestic tin reserves. Most of the tin produced in North America has come from the Seward Peninsula, Alaska, and a substantial portion of this was produced from the Potato Mountain area. Tin was first identified as occurring in the Seward Peninsula by A. H. Brooks in 1900, when a part of heavy concentrates from Anikovik River and Buhna Creek, one of its tributaries, proved to be stream tin. 4/ His report was given considerable publicity by the daily press, and the first steamers north in 1901 carried a number of prospectors bound for the Seward Peninsula to search for tin. The deposits of stream tin on Buck Creek in the Potato Mountain area were discovered in the fall of 1901. 2/

Hydrocarbon gases, primarily methane but also the C2 through C5 paraffins, the C2 and C3 olefins and possibly the C4 and C5 olefins, are byproducts of coal formation. Although it is generally believed that coal formation occurred at temperatures below 200° C, most experimental work on gas formation from coal has been performed at temperatures between 200° and 1,000°C. The objective of this Bureau of Mines experiment was to determine if observable changes in the gases from coal could be produced at temperatures below 200° C in relatively short periods of time. The experiment involved heating coal samples from six coalbeds at constant temperatures and analyzing evolved gases. The composition of the gases at three temperatures was compared. At 35° C, over 99 pct of the gas is methane; at 125° and 150°, methane constitutes approximately half of the hydrocarbon gas. Isobutane and pentane are the predominant higher hydrocarbons at temperatures between 100° and 150° C.

Views and conceptions of the origin, composition, and general nature of coal differ so widely that to determine the real extent of actual knowledge is no easy matter. The chemist finds difficulty in attacking the chemical problems and the engineer lacks a broad chemical basis for the study of his problems. Thus the economical and efficient utilization of coal in the industries suffers from a lack of knowledge of the composition of coal itself. Most scientists interested in this matter, as has been brought out in discussions during the recent investigation of coal problems, appear to have only a vague idea of the components of coal and their origin. Some are even in doubt as to whether substances derived from the wood and resins of plants form a part of coal; and few seem to have more than the dimmest idea of what are the components of coal, the condition in which these now exist, and the transformations that they haye undergone. Although during the paiilt century or more many co.rrect observations have been made and recorded, these were falsely or inadequately interpreted, so that many of the interpretations rendered are contradictory. As a result there has been great confusion. Many of the observations made in the past, although accurate and correct, could not be explained, because the principles involved in a correct solution of the problem were not then known. For example, Parkinson, Hutton, Petzhold, Guembel, and others made valuable discoveries regarding the processes by which plant substances are transformed into coal, but as the principles involved are those of colloidal chemistry, a science not known to the scientific world of that time, the observed facts could not be interpreted and the solution of the whole problem was blocked. The explanation of the true meaning of the alternating bright and dull bands so familiar in all ordinary bituminous coals afforCls another example. This banding has been observed and recorded from the earliest times, and has led to the forming of many false theories. Some gAologists, for example, have endeavored to explain the bands as due to alternating climatic conditions during the coal-forming period. Had the geologists known the true nature of coal they could not have made this mistake nor many others made in the past. To fill in a few of these gaps and to clarify some of the existing confusion is the aim of this paper. The immediate cause that led the author to investigate further the composition of coal and the origin and structure of its constituents was that when an attempt was made to discover the meaning of the coking and noncoking properties of coal a more exact knowledge of the nature of coal was required than was then available.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 27,930 acres of the 52,000 acre East Fork High Rock Canyon Wilderness Study Area, CA-020-914/NV-020-006A, in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area is located in Humboldt and Washoe Counties, NV, about 45 miles east of Cedarville, CA. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed pertinent literature and county mining records and examined prospects or mineralized areas. There are no organized mining districts and no historical or active claims in the study area; one small pit lies in the southwest corner of the study area. Based on published literature, sample results and field observations, there are no recognized mineral, geothermal, or fossil fuel resources. Epithermal mineralization indicators are not present or exposed. Sand and gravel deposits in the study area are not likely to be developed as other deposits are closer to market areas.

To economically extract ore from great depths in the earth while sustaining an acceptable working environment will require the development of new technology and equipment, involving large capital expenditures. Moreover, careful analysis and advance planning will be required. But, the literature is lacking in data pertaining; to the thermal properties of various host rocks and to quantities of heat generated by various underground heat sources. This types, of data is required to forecast nine heat loads during advanced planning and design. This thesis sets forth a practical method for evaluating underground sources of heat in deep mines and provides an improved information base. Moreover, seven topics for further research are recommended. The heat sources considered are: wall-rock, ground water, adiabatic compression, equipment, service lines, blasting, metabolism, curing of cement, and oxidation of sulfides and timber. Seven deep metal mines with high production rates and high heat loads were visited to obtain data necessary to assess their thermal environments. Mine records were examined, wall-roc:, temperatures were measured and a survey of the mine ventilating air and mine drainage was performed. Also, the thermal conductivity of wet and dry specimens of the host rock were measured in the laboratory. Data analysis disclosed that rock heat and adiabatic compression account for stout 60 per cent of the mine heat load at depth. Equipment currently contributes approximately 20 per cent; however, to offset increasing costs with depth, increased mechanization is anticipated. The treat from ground water averages 19 per cent and the contribution from blasting, metabolism and cement is negligible. Also, approximately [0] per cent of the increase in the enthalpy of the ventilation air is in the form of latent heat. Moisture, however, did not significantly affect the thermal conductivity of the rock specimens measured in the laboratory. Also, from the data, it is evident that a negative correlation exists between the thermal conductivity of the host rocks and the per cent of the heat load derived from the wail-rock. Furthemore, steady state heat flow renditions may be assumed in airways where there has been no major changes in the ventilation system for a period of two years or more. Under these conditions, the author found it more convenient and reliable to compute heat influx using the steady state equation for heat flow into a cylinder, rather than Carrier's method for transient heat flow, which is so often used.

Because of the high number of accidental methane gas ignitions in metal and nonmetal mines, the Bureau of Mines searched for a simple guideline that would allow mine personnel to evaluate the methane hazard in a given mine. Air samples were collected by the Bureau in 53 metal and nonmetal mines and analyzed for trace evidence of methane gas. Samples were collected in the returns and at the working faces. Those mines classified as gassy by the Mine Safety and Health Administration had a significantly higher average methane concentration than those classified as nongassy. Of the 9 gassy mines sampled, 7 had methane concentrations above 100 ppm, whereas only 1 of the 44 nongassy mines had a concentration above 100 ppm. The 100-ppm concentration may be used as a simple and convenient guideline for forecasting the methane hazard in a mine, whether or not the mine is classified as gassy. There was no consistent correlation between commodity mined and methane concentration, nor was there a correlation between mine depth and methane concentration. Neither of these factors can be considered a guideline for predicting methane hazards.

"The high injury rand fatality rate in coal mining, as compared with other industries, has caused the mining industry to become more and more interested in accident prevention methods.The prevention of accidents in the mining industry is probably not as simple a problem as it is in other industries, but if the experience of coal mining companies who have taken up the work of accident prevention seriously during recent years means anything, there is little doubt that most mining companies car improve their accident records very materially.Such results can be obtained in practically all instances without adding to production costs. In fact, there is little doubt that a well-organized program of accident prevention Will bring about a 'material production cost reduction due to increased efficiency, lower labor turnover, fewer delays due to accidents, better satisfied workmen, and a direct saving in compensation costs as well as many other items of expense.The more closely a. person is connected with the work of accident prevention, the more he becomes a believer in the value of amity in human relationships and the more he is able to exercise a spirit of toleration, fairness, justness, and helpfulness toward the problems of others, whatever those problems may be. Human nature responds to just these expressions of good willAnother great and invaluable effect of working for safety, is the fact that it is building up in the mind an appreciation of that which is constructive and, conversely, in opposition to that which is destructive In other words; the person who is sincerely striving to prevent accidents because they are destructive, costly, tad injurious, is subconsciously training his mind to look on any proposition from a constructive point of view. Working for accident prevention and safety is about the finest social training any person can have. It does not make a Person a financial Wizard or an executive genius, but it does make for the highest type of citizenship.While humanitarian reasons alone should be sufficient to maze accident prevention work an important factor in every mining organization, there are other reasons as well, since it has been proved conclusively that there can be no efficiency and economy without safety, as somebody pays when safety is lacking. Every safety device pays dividends; every safety application evaded is an assessment and a loss. Dangerous conditions are the most expensive and extravagant conditions in or about a coal mine. The economic gains are of considerable interest to all coal mining companies and this is brought about as before stated--through decreased compensation rates, the reduction of labor turnover, etc."

This paper is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on the quarrying, crushing, and grinding of limestone for cement manufacture. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total coats. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers, as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. "Freshly ground and aged anthracite and bituminous coal samples were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to detect the presence, concentration and reactivity of free radicals. Freshly ground anthracite coal produced greater concentration of free radicals than the bituminous coal, and the radical reactivity was also greater for the anthracite. The reactivity of the newly produced free radicals in the anthracite dust correlated with the dust's toxicity. Furthermore similar coal-based free radicals were detected in the lung tissue of autopsied coal miners, suggestive of persistent reactivity by the embedded coal dust leading to the progressive disease process. Results of the studies on the severity of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) and free radical concentration m lung tissue support this hypothesis.INTRODUCTIONCOAL WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS (CWP) has been an important topic of concern to miners, mining engineers, epidemiologists and medical researchers for decades. It is well known that the prevalence and severity of CWP differ markedly between different regions and mines despite comparable exposures to respirable dust (REISNER and RoBOCK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979). These variations in pathogenicity of coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by differences in the mineral composition and by rank of coal (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). Cytotoxity studies on mammalian cells do not correspond well with the human disease pattern (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al.,1980; VALL YA THAN et al., 1988). For example, while epidemiological studies of coal miners (REISNER and ROBECK, 1977; HURLEY et al., 1979) indicate that the prevalence of CWP correlates roughly with the rank of coal, such correlation has not yet been established in biological studies, despite considerable effort (CHRISTIAN and NELSON, 1978; CHRISTIAN et al., 1979; HATCH et al., 1980). In order to help resolve this apparent paradox we have undertaken a systematic study to evaluate whether any correlation exists between the concentration of free radicals present in fresh or aged coal dusts from two well-characterized U.S. coals. This study was also prompted in part by observations reported in the literature that organic free radicals can be formed on the surface of freshly fractured coals (LEBEDEV et al., 1978; DULIBA and CLARKSON, 1984). In particular, ARTEMOV and REZNIK (1980) noted that the decay lifetimes and, hence, the reactivity of the organic free radicals formed on crushing Russian coals, .depended"

Abrasives are essential to the manufacture of munitions - airplanes, gas, shells, tanks, and in fact every product that involves metal forming or finishing. An indication of the importance of abrasives in the national defense and aid-to-Britain programs is the close peace-time correlation between demand for abrasives and automobile production, which in recent years has consumed more than 35 percent of the total output of abrasives. Unprecedented demands on the abrasives industry are forecast by the rapid expansion in airplane output, tie increased mechanization of all armed forces, and the consequent speeding up not only of the factories where finished munitions are made but also of the steel mills and other factories were additional large quantities of abrasives are needed for snagging or rough-grinding semifinished products before they can be used by the fabricators. A recent survey by the artificial abrasives manufacturers indicates that they can readily increase their output 75 percent compared with the previous peak of 1937 without building new plants. By overhauling production schedules, their maximum production possible could be increased to 182 percent of the 1937 output, and the nature of the industry is such that plant capacity could be increased rapidly if need therefor should arise. No figures on the estimated requirements for abrasives in 1941 or 1942 have as yet been compiled, but the industry feels that it can meet demands as they develop.
