This report presents the results of a study of gas injection in the Upper and Lower Terminal zones in fault block VB and in the Upper Terminal zone in fault block VI, Wilmington field, California. This report is based on data obtained to January 1956. Earlier studies of gas injection in other California fields have been reported .3/ The Upper and Lower Terminal zones, fault block VB, have been producing oil since 1945 and the Upper Terminal zone, fault block VI, since 1948. Before starting the gas-injection project, the expansion of dissolved gas was the principal mechanism moving the oil to the wells. Gravity drainage and an edgewater drive also have contributed to the movement of the oil to the wells. When the gas injection was begun, the reservoir pressure and the oil production had declined appreciably. Gas injection was started in the Upper and Lower Terminal zones, fault block VB, in May 1953 and in the Upper Terminal zone, fault block VI, in October 1953.

During recent years underground production for the Pennsylvania anthracite region has reached the lowest output per man per day figure of the last decade and a half. This fact, combined with increased unit costs for labor and material, has forced the market price of anthracite ever higher. Over the years the mines have become deeper, and haulage distances have increased, thus adding to the mining costs. The industry now recognizes the need for new mining techniques to offset increasing costs. The Federal Bureau of Mines, through its Anthracite Research Laboratory, is engaged in a program of underground-mining research in cooperation with anthracite-producing companies to aid in reestablishing the economy of the region by introducing methods and/ or machines that will reduce underground-mining costs and, at the same time, enhance the safety of the workmen.

The computer program XRF4 was designed by the Bureau of Mines to provide for the calculation of several different interelement correction procedures in X-ray fluorescence analysis, including Lachance-Traill, Rasberry-Heinrich, and Claisse-Quintin procedures. The program was written in the BASIC language for timesharing application, and a conversational interaction with the computer is employed during operation. This report presents test problems using data for iron-nickel-chromium alloys and aluminum alloys and directions for use of the program.

Iceland spar is a variety of calcite ( calcium carbonate ) characterized by its purity , transparency , and perfection of crystalline structure . It takes its name from the country in which it was discovered . The actual demand for it is small , but the supplies of high - grade optical spar are so meager that the search for it has become international in its scope . Iceland spar is a scientific necessity , for without it research precision and technology would be hampered considerably . The earliest students of mineralogy were familiar with calcite , but the transparent variety was not discovered until early in the seventeenth century , when crystals of it were found in the bed of a stream in Iceland . It received little attention until 1669 , when Erasmus Bartholinus first recognized its powers of double refraction . The results of his investigation were published in a book , " Experimenta Crystalli Islandici , " which appeared in 1670. The law governing the action of the rerracted rays was discovered by Christian Huygens eight years later . The polarization of light rays in passing through Iceland spar was discovered in 1809 by Etienne Louis Malus , a French physicist , who published a paper describing the phenomenon . His work was closely followed by that of William Nicol , who in 1828 designed the Nicol prism which is still used as the source of polarized light in most optical instruments .

As a preliminary step in a recent study4 of the phenols present in a low-temperature tar, the writers prepared the hydroxyacetic derivatives of the simpler available members of the phenol series in order to obtain material to assist in fixing the identity of similar derivatives obtained from the phenols of the tar. When comparing the melting points of the pure derivatives we had made with those given in the literature we were unable to find the characteristics of one of the xylenol derivatives which we had prepared--namely the 1, 3 dimethyl-2-phenoxyacetic acid, In the belief that the compound does not appear in the literature we are presenting these notes on its preparation and its melting point. The hydroxyacetic derivatives are easily prepared and in good yield, and are useful in studying mixtures of phenols. The 1, 3 dimethyl-2-phenoxyacetic acid makes the fifth of the six isomeric derivatives to be reported in the literature. Gluud and Breuer report the preparation of the 1, 3, 4, the 1, 4, 2, and the 1, 2, 4 derivatives. A fourth isomer-¬the symmentrical 1, 3, 5--has been reported by Schutz6, although no record of it occurs in the indexes. The remaining derivative--the 1, 2, 8-has not, been found and it is now being synthesized in the Organic Chemistry Laboratory of the. Pittsburgh Experiment Station. It is true, however, that from a phenolic fraction boiling 215.9 to 2180 isolated from natural petroleum, Tanaka and Kobayashi7 obtained a hydroxyacetic derivative melting at 103.3°. They state that this is the 1, 2, dime ethyl-3-phenoxyacetic acid but present no evidence for the assertion. The known derivatives are summarized in Table 1 following;

Laboratory measurements by the Bureau of Mines indicate that failure in dry rock specimens measuring approximately 13 cm in length is preceded by tilt anomalies lasting a few milliseconds. The tilt behavior is qualitatively similar to that reported to precede earthquakes. Test results suggest that the time duration of this tilt anomaly for laboratory specimens of this length is independent of rock type, in agreement with theoretical predictions and other experimental data on rock failures including earthquakes.

APPENDIX C - HOISTING SYSTEMS - AVAILABLE EQUIPMENT C 1 - Introduction A survey has been made of available hoisting equipment which has applications for use in metal and non-metal mine emergency escape hoist systems. The information was gathered from a number of sources, including representatives in the USBM and MESA, mine operators, personal visits and telephone interviews with manufacturers, field visits to inspect equipment, advertisements, catalogues and indices of manufacturers. Wherever possible, technical specifications and prices were checked out with the manufacturer, or supplier. The sections on individual sub-systems and components, such as automatic control systems, winches and controls, are not intended to be all encompassing surveys. Rather a reasonable number of representative units in each category are discussed. The sample is large enough to provide a general picture of the kind of equipment available, including the abilities and limitations and a reasonable price range. The work of the operational communication systems' group dealt with a range of communication needs and functions within mines, primarily along haulageways, to and within sections up to the working face itself, and in mine shafts. A mixture of communication techniques and hardware is needed to satisfy this variety of communication needs within the differing environments encountered in U.S. mines. Substantial progress, both experimental and theoretical, has been made in recent years towards developing alternative communication systems suitable for use in mines which are based on "guided" waves, including wire-less (waveguide-like propagation in mine tunnels) and wire-based systems (leaky coaxial cables or wires) . Major priorities identified for further work needed to confirm (or deny) the applicability, and refine the operational specifications of promising communication systems for mine use include: Short-Term Projects o Cost/performance analyses of promising leaky coaxial cable and UHF radio communication systems which require further data from: - Experimental investigation under U.S. mine conditions of the performance of potentially applicable leaky coaxial cable communication systems developed in Europe (France, Belgium, and the U.K). - Cost estimates on these coaxial cable communication systems. - Measurements of UHF radio propagation in low-coal mines. - Investigation of the influence of obstacles (e.g. shuttle cars and section machinery) in the entries on UHF radio propagation in mines. o Investigation of the problems of transmitter and receiver coupling and termination matching associated with the two-way propagation of low frequency radio waves in hoist shafts.

A computer program has been developed to simulate evacuation of a mine in case of fire in the following, the capabilities, operations and structure of the program are described with illustrative examples to demonstrate usefulness of using the program. A detailed description of the program with sufficient information to make use of the program appears in Appendix B.

Current methods of inspecting wire rope for broken wires or excessive wear include visual inspection, physical measurements of rope diameter, and electromagnetic nondestructive testing (NDT). Visual inspection and physical measurement arc the least comprehensive methods. Electromagnetic NDT enables a more thorough assessment of the condition of a wire rope, but the repeatability, accuracy, and objectivity of this method can be improved. One means of achieving this goal is to use a computer to analyze the test data and determine the condition of the wire rope, including the presence of broken wires and corrosion, and the amount of wear. An off-the-shelf data acquisition and analysis system was tested in a U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratory using a continuous loop of wire rope containing fabricated flaws. The test rope was run through a commercially available NDT instrument. The output of the instrument, normally connected to a paper strip chart recorder, was digitized and analyzed with a personal computer. These initial tests were successful in showing that the use of a computer can improve current methods of NDT waveform collection and analysis.

For several years, or from about 1932 to 1935, inclusive, the coal industry of the United States had an excellent record as to coal-mine explosions. In 1937 and in 1938 to date there has been a definite increase in the number of explosions attended by considerable loss of life and property damage. In most of these explosions one important underlying and contributing cause has been lack of sufficient (or at least efficient) ventilation to properly dilute and remove explosive gas from the mine. This increase in explosions indicates that. the lesson taught through bitter experience, many times in the not far-distant past, of the need for good ventilation is frequently being overlooked, partly because the relatively good experience of the industry in the past several years has made many mining people forgetful. Moreover mining practices are rapidly changing, and in some instances the changes are being made with little if any regard for safety. It appears, therefore, that a review of some ventilation principles and practices should be of value in preventing further disasters; this paper has been prepared with that object in mind. In coal mining the need for thorough ventilation of all underground working places is recognized by both mining practice and law; such ventilation is generally obtained by the use of fans that circulate a quantity of air much in excess of the quantity of coal produced, by weight as well as by volume. For example, in a relatively small mine producing 1,000 tons of coal per day and circulating 100,000 cubic feet of air, which is by no means abnormal, 2,000,000 pounds of coal and approximately 10,900,000 pounds of air would be moved out of the mine every 24 hours. Because of the need for adequate dilution and removal of methane issuing or likely to issue from mine strata and for removal of the carbon dioxide formed by coal and timber oxidation up-to-date coal mines usually provide an air volume which if adequately coursed not only removes these gases but also the gaseous products of the detonation of explosives (which may include carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen) and the carbon

In the preparation of this paper each subject has been presented by the engineer in charge. L. R. Dobbs wrote the part pertaining to tae technique of square-set mining, J. M. Snow the part on geology, and M. D. Paine, the part on ventilation. All of the drawings are the work of H. W. Waterfield of the engineering department. The statistics of the Tintic district ware prepared by A. G. MacKenzie. Each writer has attempted to show the difficulties that arise in operating and the practices used to overcome them.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing gypsum mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is called specifically to this differentiation so that there may be no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation. This paper deals specifically with the mining and crushing methods employed by Victor Plaster, Inc., Victor, Ontario County, N. Y. The maximum annual production capacity of this company is 150,000 tons of crushed gypsum. The methods and practices employed arc typical of those followed in the gypsum mines in western New York State. The shaft is, perhaps, the deepest and the thickness of the gypsum mined is above the average for the section.

The ever-increasing use off natural underground formations for storing natural gas has focused attention on the behavior of such storage formations under varying operating conditions. The need for a means of evaluating in¬dividual wells and groups of wells has become manifest. It is essential that industry and others be able to determine the rates of flow that can be ex¬pected from a given well or group of wells under different conditions and to ascertain whether certain wells are deteriorating. Such questions need more exact answers now than ever before because of the vital role underground gas storage plays in the industrial and domestic consumption of natural gas. The Bureau of Mines--in cooperation with the American Gas Association--has main¬tained an active interest in gas-well testing because of the implications of such test procedures on the consumption and efficient production of natural gas. A basis for testing gas wells was provided by the back-pressure method of Rawlins and Schellhardt (12).4/ They showed that for normal gas wells there is a consistent relationship between rates of delivery of gas and corresponding pressures when the formation pressures are used as the basis of interpretation, The equation for this relationship is as follows: Q = C (Pf2 - Ps2)n where; Q = rate of flow, generally expressed in cubic feet per 24 hours. A mineral pigment is a colored substance dug from the ground, which after treatment can be mixed with a drying oil to form a paint. Not all colored earths, however, can be made into satisfactory pigment. Much depends upon the attractiveness and uniformity of the color and the ease of purification. Mineral pigments are distinguished from chemical pigments by a difference in origin and treatment. Chemical pigments are not found ready-made in the earth but must be synthesized or otherwise obtained from other compounds or elements; for example, cadmium yellow, a chemical pigment, is precipitated from a solution of cadmium chloride, hydrochloric acid, and sodium sulfide.

When the finely bedded shale frequently encountered over coal seams experiences a separation, the material below the separation must behave like a beam or plate in that it must resist both bending and shear. Be-cause of the weakness in interlaminar shear inherent in such strata, shear deflections that are usually ignored in isotropic beam theory may account for a significant part of the total roof sag. Similarly, when a roof truss is installed in such a roof the upward displacement reducing the sag will have components due to shear as well as bending. Questions asked by mine operators about the installation of roof trusses frequently deal with optimum position, slope, and initial tension of the inclined chords. This Bureau of Mines report examines the effects of those chord parameters on the strain energy of both shear and bending and offers optimum values that will minimize the total strain energy of the immediate roof. Design charts are provided, several design examples are included, and the results are compared with current practice. The effects of in situ stresses are investigated and are shown to be equivalent to an additional load on the beam.

Ventilation is the most important safety factor in the production of coal because on it depends the safety, health, and efficiency of those who work underground. Without adequate and efficient means of supplying fresh air to the working faces, mining could not have advanced as it has. The extent of the workings, the increase in mechanization, and the increasing use of electricity are largely responsible for changes in methods of ventialtion. Ventilation in the early, days of coal mining was accomplished by means of a natural draft, created principally by a difference in the weights of columns of air between the intake and return openings: Later the furnace was introduced for the purpose of increasing the quantity of air in circulation. Mines continued to become larger, their output increased, men were employed in greater numbers, and more fresh coal surfaces were exposed. Coal beds near the surface, and practically free from explosive gas became exhausted, and deeper beds that liberated methane were opened as development advanced. Mechanical ventilation became necessary and was first accomplished by disc-type steam driven fans she old-.fashioned steam driven disc fan has generally been supplanted by the powerful electrically operated centrifugal fans in use at modern coal mines. In order to be secure against gas explosions and provide ample fresh air for persons employed in large coal mines, air must be conducted through the mine to all working places and to all other unsealed parts of the mince in sufficient quantities to dilute and render harmless all dangerous and noxious gases.

The changing demographics of the mining industry make successful passing of knowledge and skills to the next generation critical. Training methods and technologies are being developed to meet this need. Twenty years ago classroom training was largely a one-way transfer of knowledge through instructor lectures. In contrast, instructors today can use virtual reality technologies to guide trainees as they fully participate in learning experiences. Trainees can interact with the virtual work environment, co-workers, and equipment without being exposed to workplace hazards. The speed of advancement in mine safety, health, and production training shows no sign of slowing in the next 20 years. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have studied and participated in the evolution of miner training. A look at training materials they have created in the past and those they are currently developing reveals changes in methods and technologies over time and also key characteristics which have remained constant. Possibilities for the future can he discussed in the framework of an implementation of virtual reality in new miner training sessions. The example computer-based training package teaches new miners to read mine maps and provides opportunity to practice navigation skills in a virtual mine. With this 'serious game', trainees experience the look and feel of moving through an underground coal mine while in the safety of their classroom. During field-testing in 2007, trainees and instructors responded very favourably to this new way of learning. The software was usable by mine trainers with even limited computer expertise and could be installed on the affordable computers they were using for their more traditional slide presentations. The Underground Coal Mine Map Reading Training's foundation on past successful development strategies and its acceptance by today's instructors and trainees provide valuable lessons for developing training materials, strategies, and technologies for mining's future.
