This paper dealing with the mining methods used in producing iron ore from an underground operation located in the central-western part of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. The mine here discussed was laid out in accordance with a plan adapted to a rather unusual type of ore body, the nature of which is such that the mining method necessarily differs in certain respects from the method used at most of the mines in this district. A description of it may therefore be of interest.

"INTRODUCTION There are presented in this report the results of limited studies by the Bureau of Mines of the firedamp safety of some powder-powered tools proposed for use underground in coal mines. "The health, comfort, and efficiency of men engaged in the mining industry may be impaired, in some instances very seriously, by abnormal physical conditions of the mine air or by variations in its composition. This is true in some of sheet metal mines of the West where high temperatures with varying humidities are encountered. Physiological studies have been made in some of these mines showing the effects of various temperatures end humidities. As it is difficult to carry out studies on many controlled temperatures, it was thought best to make the experiments in a laboratory and apply the results to the industry insofar as practicableThe effects of moderately high temperatures and humidities are more difficult to measure perhaps than the extreme conditions, but may be predisposing causes of fatigue, discomfort and disease, A cooperative study of the physioloical effects of heat and humidity is being conducted by the Bureau of Mines and the U. This report is concerned with the conditions affecting the methods and costs of mining phosphate rock in that part of the western phosphate field that is in Bear Lake and Caribou Counties in southeastern Idaho ( see fig . 1) . The area was selected because it contains most of the known phosphate reserve and because its geology has been studied more extensively than that of other sections . Deposits of phosphate rock on public land may be leased from the Government under the terms of the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 , subject to the regulations of the Bureau of Land Management . Public interest in phosphate production is growing , as shown by an increasing number of applications for leases . Two mines are being operated steadily for the production of phosphate rock by companies that have also the necessary processing plants for the manufacture of fertilizer . Total western phosphate - rock production in 1947 is reported by the Economics Statistics and Division of the Federal Bureau of Mines to have been 1,193,000 long tons , mined in Idaho , Montana , and Wyoming . The average grade was 30.7 percent of contained phosphorus pentoxide (P205 ) ; the average value at the mines was $5.67 per long ton . Idaho contributed 905,000 tons , or somewhat more than 75 percent of western production . Western fertilizer plants took 23 percent of total production; 76 percent was exported . Strip mining accounted for 75 percent of the Idaho tonnage; the remainder was stoped from underground workings . Rock must contain a minimum of 30 percent P205 to be commercially useful for the production of superphosphate fertilizer by current acid treatment methods . Research by corporations and Government agencies has been directed toward the use of lower - grade ore . So far , only by smelting can rock containing as little as 25 percent P205 be used economically . Any development of processing or use pattern that would render the mining of , say , 20 percent rock profitable would have important effects in reducing the unit cost of mining . In the search for metallurgical improvements , consideration should be given to the saving of valuable components of the rock, such as vanadium and fluorine , both of which are present in the beds .

[Stimulative methods of production, whereby the total recovery of oil from natural reservoirs is increased, have come into considerable prominence during the past 15 years. In many oil-producing areas properties considered ready for abandonment by ordinary producing methods have responded to some form of stimulation, and their economic lives have been extended. The stimulative method having widest application is the injection of air or gas into the reservoir formations through selected input wells and is commonly referred to as the ?gas drive." As a result of the many successful "gas-drive" operations operators are depending more and more upon this method for increasing the ulti¬mate recovery of oil from their properties. A number of factors influence the efficiency of different gases as propulsive agents in recovering oil from sands. Gases of high density and viscosity shrew a tendency toward a slightly higher efficiency than those of lower density and viscosity. The solubility of the gas in the oil also affects the efficiency of oil recovery. Not only does dissolved gas decrease the viscosity of the oil, but dissolved gas that expands from solution in the oil tends to increase the effectiveness of a "gas drive." Interfacial tension between the oil and the gas and its effect upon the recovery of oil by gas injection are factors of which little is known. Dr. A. G. Loomis5 expressed the opinion that interfacial tension probably plays a minor role in the recovery of oil, except under conditions that produce a gas-oil foam. In connection with the above physical properties that influence the action of a pressure medium, control of the injected volume of the pressure medium is perhaps the major factor. The rate ofg;as injection determines to a great extent the amount of slippage and the resulting efficiency of the operation. The importance of volume control is realized when one considers that frequently it is the only factor that is under complete control of the operator.]

The Bureau of Mines investigated factors that influence the formation of methane and other hydrocarbon gases in coal, which is an integral part of the coalification process. Coalification begins with a biogenetic stage in which plant debris decomposes and peat is formed; methane and CO2 are the predominant gases produced during this stage. During the diagenetic stage of coalification hydrogen and the hydrocarbon gases methane, ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, butene, iso- and normal butane, and pentane are formed by dissociation of the organic material. Methane may also be produced by a secondary reaction of hydrogen with unsaturates or by the reduction of CO2. The gas contained in coalbeds is a mixture of methane, C2 through C5 alkanes, CO2, 02, N2, H2, and H2; its heating value is equivalent to that of natural gas. The gas content of coal depends on many variables, but an empirical relationship between adsorptive capacity, rank, and depth has been observed.

"Introduction;As in the case of TNT previously presented*, this report presents the results of an investigation to discover the safest and best way of utilizing picric acid for industrial blasting purposes. It describes the physical and chemical properties of this explosive, gives precautions to be observed in handling, packing, preparation of cartridges, and holes, presents the results of field tests in blasting stumps and bowlders, and compares the results with those obtained from dynamite.The investigations reported herein were undertaken and this paper has been prepared, solely to aid in the salvage of the surplus picric acid accumulated for war uses and released by the declaration of the armistice. No funds were available nor have any been appropriated with which to defray the expense of converting this picric acid into any other form or to prepare any explosive mixture from it. The sole problem was to find appropriate uses for this military picric acid in existing needs and to show that it can be efficiently used in carrying out essential civil projects.It is not intended by this publication to promote the use of picric acid as an industrial explosive further than is necessary for the proper utilization of this surplus. On the contrary, the authors believe that picric acid by itself is unlikely to come into general use as an industrial explosive, chiefly because of its cost but also as shown by the clouds of smoke it emits on explosion and the nature of the reactions it undergoes because we do not obtain from it its highest efficiency. As demonstrated in its previous use in Joveite, better results and higher efficiencies may be obtained by mixing picric acid in proper proportions with sodium nitrate or ammonium nitrate, to more completely oxidize the picric acid, and another nitrosubstitution compound, such as nitronaphthalenes, with which do desensitize and waterproof the composition formed. By such admixture not only may the energy resident in the picric acid, be more fully utilized but the cost of the resulting blasting explosive should be much less than that of picric acid."

The thermodynamic properties of pollucite [(Cs0.650Na0.185Rb0.028)(AlSi2) (05.8630H0.137)?0.19H201 were determined by the Bureau of Mines in collaboration with the Argonne National Laboratory. The standard enthalpy of formation determined by hydrofluoric acid calorimetry is ?Hf°298 = -3,098.52 ±3.63 kJ mol-1. The standard enthalpy of formation from the oxides is ?H298 (from oxides) = -209.50 ±2.38 kJ mol-1. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined by adiabatic calorimetry from 5.0 to 306.1 K. The derived standard entropy is S°298 = 207.24 ±0.43 J mol-1k-1. Enthalpy increments above 300 K were measured by copper-block drop calorimetry from 349 to 674 K. Various experimental data were combined with other data from the literature to calculate the Gibbs energies of formation and equilibrium constants of formation over the temperature range of measurements. Standard enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation are given as functions of temperature. The Gibbs energy of formation is ?Gf°298 = -2,919.9 W mol-1

It is estimated that more than 1 trillion cubic feet of methane is contained within the coals of the Mary Lee group in Jefferson, eastern Tuscaloosa, and southern Walker Counties, Ala. Most of this methane will be encountered by mining. Coals of the Mary Lee group are presently being mined at depths exceeding 1,000 feet and will in the near future be mined at even greater depths, where the problem of methane gas affecting the mining operations will be acute. It is calculated that approximately 90 pct of the methane is at depths greater than 1,000 feet, and over half of the gas is contained within only 12 pct of the study area which is under more than 1,500 feet of over- burden. Degasification in advance of mining will increase mine safety, reduce ventilation expenditures, increase productivity, provide an additional energy source, and make it possible to mine parts of deep coalbeds that probably could not otherwise be mined.

[Composition profiles for atomic, radical, and stable species, as well as temperature and area expansion ratio profiles, have been determined for a nearly stoichiometric CH4-02-Ar flame and one to which 0.3 percent CF5Br inhibitor had been added. Net reaction rate profiles were calculated for all the observed species. For the normal flame, these and the mole fraction profiles gave rate coefficient information about the elementary reactions in the methane flame, for example, CH. + 0 4- H2CO 0 H, k4 = 1.05 X 1014CM3 mole-1sec-1 for 1,550§T 0,725' K; CO + OH 4 C02 + H, k6= 4.7 X 1011 for 1,350{T X1,750° K. Comparison between the inhibited and normal flame showed that A] and [CH3] were significantly reduced at the lower temperatures in the inhibited flame even though in the hot gas region the [E] [OH!, and [0] were essentially the same in both flames. The CF3Br disappears very early in the flame, relative to the fuel, and the reaction primarily responsible for its disappearance is H v CF3Br 4 HBr + CF3, where k7 is found to be 2.2 X 1014 exp(-9460/RT) for 700-1,550° K. Reaction of the inhibitor with methyl radicals provides for the relatively small amounts of CH3Br observed, but CH3 + Br2 - CHs Br + Br must also occur. The HBr formed reacts rapidly with H atoms to form H2 and Br, but the reaction is soon "balanced" in the flame as may be demonstrated by calculation of the equilibrium constant at various temperatures. The fluoro-carbon fragment produced in reaction (7) also reacts rapidly, in part with methyl radicals to give the observed elimination product CH2CF2 Later in the flame, above -1,400' K, F2CO is formed from the reaction CH2CF2 + 0 P F2CO + CH2 and k., -1.5 X 1013 at 1,600° K. The rather slow decay of carbonyl fluoride is attributed to reaction with H atoms according to the sequence F2CO I H - HF + FCO and FCO + H HF + CO.]

1. In 2002, a total of 256 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Metal mines were the smallest mining sector,1 comprising 1.8% of all mining operations. • Gold mines comprised 44.1% (n = 113) of all metal mining operations. Other types of metal mines were copper ore (n = 31; 12.1%), iron ore (n = 25; 9.8%), and lead and/or zinc ore (n = 21; 8.2%). • Nevada is the state with the largest number of metal mines (n = 53; 20.7%).

A German coal planer was put in operation in the Keystone mine of the Eastern Associated Coal Corp. , Keystone , W. Va . , in August 1960 . At present , the planer is mining in the fourth panel . The blocks of coal mined were 340 by 1,900 feet in panel 1 , 340 by 1,660 feet in panel 2 , 590 by 1,900 feet in panel 3 , and panel 4 , currently being mined , is 590 by 1,900 feet . Almost one- half million tons of coal have been mined from these four panels . An 11 - man crew handles the complete planer operation and produces an average of 500 tons of clean coal per shift . Self - advancing hydraulic props are used to support the roof over the entire face . Roof control and action on all of the panels has been highly satisfactory . During periods of extreme pressure , some additional support is required in the tail entry where evidence of weight from the retreating longwall extends about 200 feet outby the face . The time lost from production by moving equipment between panels has been reduced steadily . The move from panel 3 to panel 4 required 5 days , but it is believed that even that time could be reduced .

PURPOSE This report provides an integrative review of 52 recently published research reports that examine the associations between long working hours and illnesses, injuries, health behaviors, and performance. The report is restricted to a description of the findings and methods and is not intended as an exhaustive discussion of all important issues related to long working hours. Findings and methods are summarized as reported by the original authors, and the study methods are not critically evaluated for quality. SUMMARY In 16 of 22 studies addressing general health effects, overtime was associated with poorer perceived general health, increased injury rates, more illnesses, or increased mortality. One meta-analysis of long work hours suggested a possible weak relationship with preterm birth. Overtime was associated with unhealthy weight gain in two studies, increased alcohol use in two of three studies, increased smoking in one of two studies, and poorer neuropsychological test performance in one study. Some reports did not support this trend, finding no relationship between long work hours and leisure-time physical activity (two of three studies) and no relationship with drug abuse (one study). A pattern of deteriorating performance on psycho physiological tests as well as injuries while working long hours was observed across study findings, particularly with very long shifts and when 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work a week. Four studies that focused on effects during extended shifts reported that the9thto 12th hours of work were associated with feelings of decreased alertness and increased fatigue, lower cognitive function, declines in vigilance on task measures, and increased injuries. Two studies examining physicians who worked very long shifts reported deterioration on various measures of cognitive performance. When 12-hour shifts combined with other work-related demands, a pattern of more adverse findings was detected across studies. Six studies examining 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work per week reported increases in health complaints, deterioration in performance, or slower pace of work. Two studies com-paring 8- and 12-hour schedules during day and night shifts reported that 12-hour night shifts were associated with more physical fatigue, smoking, or alcohol use. Two studies examining start times for 12-hour shifts reported that decrements in alertness or more health complaints were associated with early 6:00 a.m. start times. One study examining 12-hour shifts in hot work environments reported a slower pace of work as compared with shorter shifts. Another study examining high workloads during 12-hour shifts showed increased discomfort and deterioration in performance as compared with shorter shifts. More definitive statements about differences between 8-hour and 12-hour shifts are difficult because of the inconsistencies in the types of work schedules examined across studies. Work schedules differed by the time of day (i.e., day, evening, night), fixed versus rotating schedules, speed of rotation, direction of rotation, number of hours worked per week, number of consecutive days worked, number of rest days, and number of weekends off. All of these factors could have interacted with overtime and influenced study results. There are no active mines in the Mt. Eddy RARE II area. Chromite, gold, and stone prospects were examined. The RARE II area contains no identified mineral resources; however, a sample of a 260 ton occurrence contained 38.1 percent chromium oxide (Cr203) at the Ratero Prospect (fig. 1, no. 3), which has low potential for chromium resources. The Johnson Mine (fig. 1, no. 6) produced a small unrecorded amount of chromite during World War IT, but only a low potential exists for chromium resources. A low potential exists for gold resources at the Half Century Prospect (fig. 1, no. 2). At a borrow pit northwest of the study area (fig. 1, no. 1), sheared serpentinite is quarried for road metal; similar rock occurs in the RARE II area, but better material is more readily available elsewhere. Sand and gravel occurrences are too inaccessible and distant from markets to be considered resources. Mineral fuels and geothermal resources were not evaluated during this Bureau of Mines study. There currently are three unpatented lode mining claims in the study area. INTRODUCTION The Mt. Eddy RARE II area is 7 air-mi west of Mt. Shasta City, California, and straddles the Siskiyou-Trinity county line. The roadless area includes 7,200 acres of rugged, glacially carved, ridges and drainages which comprise Mt. Eddy. Elevations vary from 6,000 ft along the North Fork Sacramento River to 9,025 ft at the summit of Mt. Eddy. The area is covered with conifer forest below 8,000 ft elevation.

Louisiana is one of the major oil-producing States of the country. Commercial production of crude oil in the State began in 1902 and has increased to an estimated output of 157,409,000 barrels in 1945, which is the maximum production up to this time and places the State fourth in the nation. The cumulative production for Louisiana through 1944 is 1,544,481,000 barrels, and, adding the output for 1945, the total to January 1, 1946, is 1,681,890,000 barrels. Data on annual production of crude oil in Louisiana and tentative statistics for 1945 are given in table 1. The large production of crude oil in Louisiana and the present trend to utilize petroleum in accordance with its general characteristics make it increasingly important to present analytical data for crude oils. This report is the fifth of a series presenting such data obtained on crude oils from Louisiana according to the procedure used by the Bureau of Mines. Individual analyses are given for 82 samples from 64 fields; many of the samples are from recently discovered fields, and some are from new producing formations.
