A kinetic model was developed to describe the production of superoxide (02) by single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM). Model predictions were compared to experimental results obtained from single rat PAM. The O2 - was quantified by measuring the reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate (NBTH2) from video-recorded images of individual cells. The kinetic model considered three reactions: (1) the production of extracellular 0 - from the reduction of oxygen by NADPH oxidase using intracellular NADPH as the substrate, (2) the subsequent dismutation of o2- to from O2 , and (3) the reaction of o2- and NBT. NBT specificity for o2- was analyzed by comparing results in the presence and absence of superoxide dismutase (SOD) which catalyzes the dismutation of o2- to H2o2. Measured PAM heterogeneity was accounted for by varying the concentration of intracellular NADPH, its rate of depletion, and the concentration of intracellular NADPH oxidase in the kinetic model. Model predictions compared favorably with experimental results except when SOD was present. This discrepancy may be due to diffusional limitations since NBT is a relatively small molecule (818 MW) compared to SOD (34000 MW). In addition, the cell surface is both ruffled and negatively charged, which may introduce steric hindrances and/or electrostatic effects since SOD is also negatively charged.

Presented below is a review of how the objectives, as outlined in the statement of the problem, were achieved. 1. Methods of evaluating the performance of grounding systems must be described. These methods are the subject of Chapter III. 2. Field trips to operating mines should be undertaken, and a cri¬tique of their grounding systems made upon the basis of obser¬vation and the application of the above techniques. An analysis of field trip data, along with practical recommendations, is in¬cluded in Chapter IV, while a complete review of all field trips is given in Appendix I. 3. Because of their thoroughness, present coal mine regulations should be evaluated, and their applicability to open-pit environ¬ments appraised. This has been done in consultation with governmental agency, manufacturing, operating mine, and consult¬ing engineers. As stated in Chapter IV, insight gained through field observations has served to amplify and extend the base of knowledge from which the recommendations were made. 4. The results of these investigations should lead to suggested Federal standards. Such recommendations comprise Appendix II. In addition, several important factors, which are discussed in Chapter IV, were brought to light as a direct result of the field research. 5. Some of the most difficult coal mine roof in the U.S. can be found in the Illinois Basin. Factors contributing to the high roof fall rate include: weak moisture-sensitive roof rock, high horizontal stress, and limited longwall mining. The depth of cover ranges from 90-1,000 ft and roof damage from horizontal stress can be severe. Moisture sensitive-roof rock is common above the Springfield-Harrisburg Herrin #5 and #6 seams in the Illinois Basin, and contributes to roof skin deterioration. The roof fall rate increases significantly in the humid summer months. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown, using lab and field studies, that highly moisture-sensitive roof rock can be directly correlated to poor roof conditions. Controlling the skin is the key to reducing rock fall injuries, and roof screening is, by far, the best remedy. Illinois Basin coal operators have been successful in reducing the number of rock fall injuries in recent years. NIOSH has documented best practices for screen installation which has resulted in safe, efficient operations. Other solutions to skin failure include: the use of denser five bolts per row patterns to reduce spans between bolts, systematic supplemental support in intersections, straps and large pans protecting operators, and air conditioning to remove moisture from the intake air.

A joint investigation by the Bureau of Mines and the Christopher Coal Co. at the Humphrey No. 7 mine, operating in the Pittsburgh coalbed in northern West Virginia, was undertaken to gain more insight concerning the hazardous emission of methane gas in mining. This report describes the equipment, procedure, and results. Horizontal bleeder holes drilled in the faces drained large quantities of methane, eliminating downtime of mining equipment. Also, larger quantities of methane were removed by forcing 14 to 25 g,.p.m. water at 25 to 200 p.s.i. 5 pressure into the bleeder holes. In one infusion test a fluorescein dye was added to the infusion water; in later mining operations, the infusion water was traced for a distance of 1,500 feet. With vacuum pump applied to the horizontal hole the gas-flow rate increased, and the methane content decreased. Tests indicated that methane and water infused in bleeder holes traveled along the bedding planes of the Pittsburgh coalbed at a faster rate than across the planes. Methane associated with coalbeds is produced by the slow decomposition of carbonaceous material in the absence of air and the presence of water. It is lighter than air and, depending on its concentration, forms an inflammable or explosive mixture with air. It is believed that methane is entrapped in and around the pores of the coal and adjacent strata--often under great pressure. Introduction A wealth of information exists which deals with electrical grounding, both from a general viewpoint and from a specifically mine-oriented approach. Many parameters must be investigated in order to thoroughly cover all of the variables which govern the performance of electrical grounding systems. The emphasis of this work on open-pit practices re- presents a new development in the field of grounding research, and an exhaustive review of the relevant historical documentation is especially desirable. Grounding System Purposes What purposes are served by a grounding system? The answer is four-fold and may be summarized as follows. First, it must limit potential gradients between conducting materials in a given area (56). When a phase conductor comes into contact with a machine frame, current flows through the equipment, which tends to become elevated above ground by an amount equal to the voltage on the conductor. If a man were to touch the machine while he was simultaneously connected to ground in some manner, his body would also tend to become elevated in potential, possibly to a lethal extent. Thus, the grounding system should provide a low- resistance path for the fault current to return to the source. The maxi- mum potential to which a man could be exposed when touching a machine frame is equal to the voltage drop along the ground conductors inside the power cable, as shown in Figure 1 (54). Calorimetric data for the dissolution of scandium sesquioxide and scandium trichloride in 4.360 molal hydrochloric acid were used to evaluate the standard heat of formation of ScCl3(c). The heat of reaction for Sc(c) + 1.5Cl2(g) = ScCl3(c) at 298.15° K was computed as -225,440 ±340 cal/mole.

As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to provide thermodynamic data for the advancement of mineral technology, the standard enthalpies of formation for ZnO?2ZnSO4 and COS04-6H20 were determined by HC1 acid solution calorimetry. The values are -550.31 ±0.28 and -641.33 ±0.15 kcal/mot, respectively.

Lime-soda sinters, made and processed for recovering alumina and soda, consisted of several types of compound structures differing from the ideal dicalcium silicate and sodium aluminate. Many or these compound structures were causes for low alumina recovery and contributed to the relation or leach slurries. Presence or free lime, whether in the sinter or released by hydrolysis of sinter compounds, contributed to relation of leach slurries. Free lime tends to establish the initial viscosity assumed by a leach slurry. Previous investigations by the Bureau of Mines (1, 4)4/ and by other laboratories (5) have demonstrated the technical applicability of the lime-soda sinter process to the recovery of alumina from aluminum silicate materials. The basic concept of the process is sintering aluminum silicate materials with limestone and soda ash for the production of dicalcium silicate and sodium aluminate and then extracting the sodium aluminate by leaching the sinter in causticized liquors. Alumina is precipitated from the pregnant liquors by carbonating with carbon dioxide. INTRODUCTION Slope stability accidents are one of the leading causes of fatalities at U.S. surface mining operations. The Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently conducting research to reduce the fatalities associated with slope failures and other unexpected failures of ground. The purpose of this paper is to introduce various warning signs of slope instability so operators are better able to recognize hazards. The most common slope monitoring equipment and practical methods of installation are discussed as well as the limitations of these systems. CONSEQUENCES OF SLOPE FAILURES Unexpected movement of ground causes the potential to endanger lives, demolish equipment, or destroy property. Between 1995 and 2001 (2nd quarter), 34 fatalities were caused by ground instability. This accounts for approximately 15% of all surface mine fatalities (Figure 1). These figures include fatalities classified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as “fall of face or highwall,” “powered haulage,” “equipment,” and other MSHA accident categories, where the primary cause of the accident was unanticipated movement of the ground. This includes fatalities resulting from bench and highwall failures, rock falls, waste dump and stockpile failures, and the collapse of unknown underground workings. [ ]

Green River oil shale previously extracted by benzene was heated at 150°, 200°, 250°, 300°, and 350° C for 0.5 to 360 days to determine the rate at which kerogen degrades to thermal products, the types of thermal products formed, and the effect of prolonged low-temperature heating (preheating) upon subsequent assay yields. Thermal decomposition of kerogen at 150° to 350° C is treated as a first-order reaction. The specific reaction rate for kerogen decomposition increases from 2.2 X 10-4 per day at 150° C to 2.0 X 10-1 per day at 350° C. The calculated kerogen activation energy is 19 kcal. Variations in the rate of formation of individual type components of the pyrolytic products were found. Carbon balances show an increase in the amount of kerogen converted to bitumen and oil (from assay of preheated oil shale) as the temperature of preheating increased from 150° to 350° C. Total product from shale preheated at temperatures of 150° and 200° C gave less than 100 percent of Fischer assay yields while the total products from shale preheated at temperatures of 250° to 350° C gave greater than 100 percent of Fischer assay yields.

Coal-bearing beds underlie 23,000 square miles, about one third of Missouri's total area. Twelve out of more than twenty named coal seams have been or are being commercially mined. The remainder are too thin for commercial production. The coal is high volatile bituminous, with reserves estimated to be six billion tons, 1.24percent of U.S. coal reserves. Coal-bearing strata are generally thin seams which can be up to five feet thick. Typically, mined seams are about 28 inches thick. Coal deposits were first mined in Missouri in the 1840s, with the coal used primarily for domestic heating and blacksmithing. Production increased with the introduction of steamboats on the Mississippi. Coal production in 19 17 was six million tons. Production has steadily declined from a high of nearly seven million tons in 1984 to 2.3 million tons in 1991. Declining production is the result of several factors, including competition from other energy sources and the high sulfur content of Missouri coal. Today, coal-fired electric generating plants are the biggest consumers of Missouri coal. The Missouri regulatory program was conditionally approved November 21,1980, and fully approved January 17,1983. Its Abandoned Mine Land program was approved January 29, 1982.

This paper reports the results of flammability studies for methane, propane. hydrogen, and deuterium gases in air conducted by the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. Knowledge of the explosion hazards of these gases is important to the coal mining industry and to other industries that produce or use flammable gases. The experimental research was conducted in 20 L and 120 L closed explosion chambers under both quiescent and turbulent conditions, using both electric spark and pyrotechnic ignition sources. The data reported here generally confirm the data of previous investigators, but they are more comprehensive than those reported previously. The results illustrate the complications associated with buoyancy, turbulence, selective diffusion, and ignitor strength versus chamber size. Although the lower flammable limits (LFLs) are well defined for methane (CH,) and Propane (CA), the LFLs for hydrogen (HZ) and its heavier isotope deuterium (D2) are much more dependent on the limit criterion chosen. A similar behavior is observed for the upper flammable limit of propane. The data presented include lower and upper flammable limits, maximum pressures, and maximum rates of pressure rise. The rates of pressure rise, even when normalized by the cube root of the chamber volume (V 1/3), are shown to be sensitive to chamber size.

Recent studies have shown that miners performing construction, maintenance, and repair (CMR) work activities in the conduct of their jobs incur from 39 to 65 percent of all reported injuries in the mining industry, The number is particularly high at surface aggregate operations; however, the problem exists at all mining locations and commodities. To address this issue, an interactive, (3-D) slides training exercise, Hazard Recognition Training Program for Construction. Maintenance and Repair Activities, was developed. The purpose of the exercise is to teach work& to recognize CMR hazards in the workplace and to deal with them using accepted safe work procedures. It was field tested using a total of 340 persons from surface mining operations in six states. The subjects were tested before and after the training intervention to determine if objectives of the instruction were achieved. Results indicated that 7 1 percent of the participants showed improvement in ink test scores. Following the posttest, subjects responded to a seven question Likert scale. These questions related to the validity of the exercise and the utility of the training program. More than 93 percent of the miners reported that they "learned something new from the training" and over 94% said they "would use these practices to work more safely".

Accurately measure time of detonation and explosive detonation velocity in a blasthole for analysis of explosive performance and delay intervals. Approach A blasthole-monitoring fiber optic probe was developed consisting of filer optic cable to carry the fight and a sensor to detect and convert the light signals into electrical signals. Events can then be recorded on an oscilloscope, tape recorder, digital computer, or start-and-stop timer. This method is simpler to use and more immune to electronic noise than existing resistance techniques. The fiber optic material,, are inexpensive and easy to obtain, and the recording devices, such as storage oscilloscopes, arc available or easy to obtain. The probe provides the mining industry, explosive manufacturers, and those studying blasting, with a practical alternative to complex and expensive coaxial cable reflectometry, resistor strings, or resistance wire methods for determining explosive and detonator performance. How It Works The fiber optic cable is a plastic light guide consisting of sixteen 0.01-inch-diameter optic strands having an overall outside diameter of 0.087 inch. The receiver module incorporates a photodiode to detect the signal and an integrated circuit receiver for signal amplification into one package about 1/2 by 5/8 by 7/8 inch.

"INTRODUCTION The Phelps-Dodge Corp. New Cornelia Branch open-pit copper mine operated without a fatality in the drilling and blasting department from December 13, 1937, to April 1, 1947, and continuing.Between the dates named the explosives crews had a total of 746,520 man-hours of exposure and handled 12,000 tons of explosives, over 770,000 detonators, 2,300,000 feet of fuse, and 7,700,000 feet of Primacord in loading holes to break 116,780,000 tons of material.It is the purpose of this paper to record the procautions taken to insure safe handling of explosives at this operation where safety is definitely a matter of forethought rather than chance.GENERAL INFORMATIONThe New Cornelia Branch open-pit mine operates on a large, low-grade, disseminated-copper deposit about one-half mile south of Ajo, Ariz. The pit is approximately oval; the ore body being some 4,800 feet long and 2,750 feet wide. Ore is mined with electric shovels loading into railroad cars. All benches in- the pit are 40 feet in height except two, which are 60 feet high.The New Cornelia ore body differs from most porphyry-copper deposits in being hard and siliceous. In common with the other low-grade porphyry-copper deposits, continued operation is possible only with economical handling of large tonnages. This has necessitated a great deal of study in the evolution of a safe and efficient method of handling the large quantities of explosives needed in breaking this hard-rock material."

In 1938 , the Bureau of Mines cooperated with Subcommittee XV on Plasticity and Swelling of Coal ( C. C. Russell , chairman ) , of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke , A.S.T.M. , by testing various methods for determining expansion and plastic properties of a series of coals of widely different coking properties . One of the tests made by the Bureau was the British Standard Method for the Crucible Swelling Test for Coal.5/ Briefly , this swelling test consists in heating 1 gram of pulverized coal in a silica crucible over a gas flame under prescribed conditions to form a coke button which is compared in size and shape with a series of standard profiles numbered 1 to 9. These profiles are intended to cover the size and shape of buttons obtained from coals covering a wide range in plastic properties .. The number of the standard profile with which the maximum cross -sectional area of the button most nearly corresponds is recorded as the swelling index . Although the swelling test showed poor relationships with the various tests that were used for measuring expansion or contraction of coal during carbonization , it gave indications of having value in measuring free - swelling and caking properties of coals when burned on fuel beds . An opportunity to investigate this occurred when an engineer of an eastern public utility 'company reported pronounced differences in burning characteristics on grates of various shipments of Pocahontas coal . Some of these coals gave trouble by swelling 'excessively and clogging the grates . Samples were ob- · tained , and it was found that the troublesome coals gave decidedly higher free -swelling numbers than did the coals that performed satisfactorily . Also , it was found that the free - swelling index test gave better differentiation between coals than could be obtained from the coke buttons from the · ´`standard volatile -matter test or from agglutinating - value results . The results of the free - swelling tests were considered by the Subcommittee on Plasticity and Swelling , and a special group of the subcommittee , under the chairmanship of R. A. Sherman , was delegated to study the test method . Ostborg , Limbacher , and Sherman , ofthe Battelle Memorial Institute , ' investigated the various factors affecting the test and found that the swelling index was a good indication of the suitability of coal for performance on residential -type stokers from the standpoint of the coking characteristics of the coal . Data were presented also showing that the indexes wer helpful in the selection of coal for industrial underfeed stokers .

"A million tons of coal mined in the Pennsylvania anthracite region without a fatality is a feat of which to be proud and one that deserves the commendation of the entire mining industry. The average production per fatality in this region for 1933 was 206,823 tons, an exceptional record showing the results of an intensive drive made by the Pennsylvania Department of Mines and the anthracite operators and-workers to curtail the high accident rates heretofore prevailing in the region.This paper gives information about a mine with a record five times better than the average which should prove to the industry that mine accidents can be reduced through the proper safety organization and effort. The Pine Hill Coal Co., managed by Weston Dodson & Co., Inc., and located at Minersville, Schuylkill County, Pa., has made such a record at its Oak all colliery by studying its accident experience, realizing the facts, and pursuing a definite safety policy with a view to bettering its accident occurrence.As a direct result of its safety policy this colliery has produced 1,044,000 tons of anthracite without a fatality; within 3 years it has reduced its total accidents from 645 to 105 per year, its compensable accidents from 204 to 45 per year, and its lost-time accidents from 335- to 67 per year. In addition, it has set up a smoothly functioning safety organization that will go fax in aiding in the continuance of this great work of mining anthracite at a lower .cost in human suffering.This circular describes the accident-prevention methods perfected and the results obtained by this colliery in the belief that similar methods will produce essentially similar results at any other colliery where they may be adopted.The writer acknowledges his indebtedness to the officials of the company who furnished him with the details of the safety organization and the data from which this report was prepared. He especially desires to thank Messrs. Stockett, general manager, Wells, general superintendent, Morgan, safety engineer, and Kistler,- statistical department, for their hind assistance.The mine is opened by shafts, slopes, and drifts, a characteristic of minas in the Southern anthracite field. Thirteen different beds of coal are being mined. The thickness of the beds ranges from 3.5 to 16 feet and the pitch from 0 to 900. The roof and floor exhibit the entire range of conditions found in anthracite mines. Table 1 describes the coal seams being worked."

This Technical Memorandum Report is a collection of three working memoranda, prepared during the course of our work for the Bureau of Mines and bound together for convenient reference. These working memoranda present preliminary performance estimates, for baseband voice and narrow- band through-the-earth electromagnetic communications systems of principal interest to the Bureau, for operational/emergency mine communications. The calculations were prepared to obtain early indications of the feasibility and governing parameters of such communications systems. They are based on limited, but pertinent, coal mine electromagnetic noise data acquired to-date by Bureau of Mines contractors; and of theoretical signal-attenuation characteristics for two transmitter antenna types of present interest to the Bureau. The memoranda examine the cases of baseband voice and narrowband communications for uplink and downlink transmissions, for frequencies up to 3kHz. Downlink transmissions are via a horizontal wire antenna, up- link transmissions via a vertical-axis loop antenna, for typical mine depths of 300, 600, and 1000 feet. Representative coal-mine overburden conductivities of 10-2 mhos/meter (moderate and common) and 10-1 mhos/meter (high) were used; for voice and narrowband, 10-1 for narrowband only. Examples of high, moderate, and low; surface and subsurface; harmonic and broadband-impulsive noise conditions were taken from NBS and Westinghouse (WGL) mine noise data, together with examples of high- and low levels of ELF atmospheric noise taken from M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory data. These feasibility calculations are not intended to serve as definitive and complete treatments, but as a starting point: to establish first-order estimates of the magnitude and variability of transmitter power requirements under different noise, overburden conductivity, and mine depth conditions; to identify relationships, conditions, or frequencies that are likely to limit or enhance system performance; to reveal items requiring further investigation and data still required; and to suggest practical methods for optimizing system performance. These objectives were met by the calculations. Simple experiments to support these calculations can and should be carried out; together with more detailed investigations of specific modulation, coding, noise-suppression, voice-compression and signal-conditioning techniques, aimed at producing through-the-earth operational/emergency mine-communication systems that are not only effective, but practical and economically sound.

It was decided to demonstrate the use of latex as a soil sealant by irrigating three small plots at Lanse coded 03A on the west of Brown's run, 3C on the east of the stream, and SB, an area on the spoil bank. Earlier plans to sprinkle latex on twenty acres of the side were abandoned because of easement difficulties. On the basis of results from laboratory soil columns and small plot experiments at Lanse, Naugatex J-3471 was the latex of choice. The irrigation system consisted of plastic pipe (two inch size) for the main line from the water meter to the irrigation area because of lower price and ease of handling. Because the municipal water supply was limited to 20 gpm, low-volume 14V-LA-TNT Rainbow sprinklers were specified with low angle 20° 3/32 inch nozzles to reduce wind effects. At the expected nozzle pressure of 50 psig, each sprinkler covers a 56 foot diameter area at a delivery rate of 1.64 gpm. Each of the three test areas was covered with twelve sprinklers, six used with water alone as a control area and six used with latex and subsequent water spraying. One-quarterturn inlet valves were positioned on the main lines leading to each area. Flow to the treated and untreated areas was set at 10 gpm by Dole flow control valves in the' main entry lateral to each of the six sprinklers. To avoid the use of dilution tanks, a Moyno pump operated by a 1/2 HP, 1140 rpm 5:1 reducing drive was used to deliver 1/2 gpm 48% latex for mixing with 10 gpm water. A 3500 watt gasoline generator provided power for pump and light. Latex was applied at night to take advantage of the lower evaporation and higher humidity. Neutron gauge access tubes were placed in orthogonal arrangement in the areas that were irrigated, with four tubes in the section that were sprinkled with latex and four tubes in the untreated irrigation section in each of the three locations. Each tube, five and one-half feet long and sealed at one end with a plug welded in place, was inserted five feet into the ground in a cored hole. In each irrigation area, the left section of six sprinklers spread the dilute latex while the right section sprinkled the same amount of water to serve as a control plot. As shown in Figure 7 each sprinkler has a 56-foot sprinkling diameter at 50 psig design water pressure. The sprinklers are 30 feet apart on the laterals and 35 feet apart between the laterals. The access tubes (coded AT on Figure 7) were placed in comparable spots on the two sections of each area, so that four soil moisture measurements on the two sections could be compared. Bouyoucos resistance blocks (BB) were also placed in areas 03A and 3C at one, two and three foot depths, but not on the spoil bank area.
