This paper discusses the data collected during an emergency evacuation training exercise at an underground mine in the United States. The focus of this paper is on the human reaction to smoke and the use of personal protective equipment. Specific issues related to the human stress response during an emergency will be discussed.

This report discusses the Bureau of Mines' efforts to develop partial protective structures for operators of low-coal shuttle cars. In coal seams 48 in high or less, full-coverage canopies are generally difficult or may be impossible to implement on high-speed face equipment due to the restrictions they impose on the operator's vision and comfort. Lim- ited coverage is one alternative that provides an acceptable level of operator protection in thin-seam applications where conventional full- coverage canopies cannot be used. Three possible limited-coverage de- sign scenarios (roll bars, sliding canopies, and flip-top canopies) were designed, fabricated, and evaluated for low-coal shuttle cars. All three designs were determined to be feasible and desirable for low-coal shuttle car application.

This report presents a computer code that has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for isolating naturally occurring clusters of data plotted on the unit hemisphere and testing these clusters against a probability distribution which admits elliptical symmetry about its mean. A listing of the computer code is provided along with an example output illustrating the delineation and analysis of clusters in fracture orientations measured in a porphyry copper deposit.

This paper introduces a method for teaching workers to communicate necessary information when giving or receiving emergency warning messages. Research has shown that when an emergency occurs, people may not get the information they need to take appropriate action. Interviews conducted with 48 underground coal miners who had escaped mine fires revealed that the warning information provided was inadequate. In some cases, sufficient information was not provided to the endangered miners. At other times, miners failed to ask for information they needed to plan and execute effective escapes. Researchers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory have been studying the content of emergency warning messages and have developed an emergency communication protocol. A training intervention that presents the protocol and related mental cues is being evaluated for effectiveness in improving the content of emergency messages. In this paper the protocol is presented and the training package described. The evaluation procedures and a summary of the analyses conducted to-date are also provided. The training package was developed for use with underground coal miners, but could easily be modified for emergency communications training in other settings.

"INTRODUCTION The use of wet drilling with adequate ventilation has largely controlled production of dust in drilling rock; however, in some operations, such as shaft sinking and modern tunnel driving, when each of a number of drills is operating in a small cross-sectional area, it is at times difficult to ventilate well enough to keep the dust concentration within desired limits.Some chemical compounds, known as wetting agents, when added to water in small quantities reduce the interfacial tension and make it possible for the solution to wet dust particles more effectively than water alone.This report presents results of tests on the effectiveness of two wetting solutions in reducing the amount of dust produced by wet drilling in basalt.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe tests were conducted at the Bureau's Mount Weather Testing Adit, Mount Weathe, Va. ANFO blasting agents may undergo an exothermic reaction when they contact warm ore bodies that contain pyrite and its weathering products. The reaction is very fast at temperatures above 80° C. Urea, when present in sufficient amounts, inhibits this reaction at temperatures below 180° C. But urea-ammonium nitrate mixtures are very hygroscopic and, in certain climates, may be difficult to handle in the field. Reaction-inhibiting characteristics of three compounds were reported by the Bureau of Mines in 1979. Recently, the Bureau investigated the reaction-inhibiting qualities of five additional compounds. Mixtures of ANFO, pyrite, weathering product, and prospective inhibitors were slowly heated, under conditions simulating a hot borehole, to determine prospective inhibitor capability at temperatures up to ~175° C. Small-scale thermal tests of the same mixtures were used for verification and clarification of results. Two organic compounds, phthalimide and xanthine, similar in structure to urea, failed to inhibit the reaction. Zinc oxide and calcium carbonate were found inferior to urea, though zinc oxide raised the onset of reaction from 80° C to about 140° C. Only magnesium oxide was found to be similar to urea in its inhibitory ability at temperatures below 175° C. Based on results from analysis of quenched residues, the use of more than 5 wt-pct magnesium oxide is recommended.

Electronegativities of the rare-earth elements were calculated from heats of formation. The values obtained from different compounds varied widely. The postulates of Pauling's electronegativity theory were interpreted for bonds that are primarily ionic; the study showed that many compounds obey rules of the form expected. Revised electronegativity values are given for the more electropositive elements, including the rare-earth metals (which are near magnesium in electronegativity). Estimates of un-known heats of formation are made from electronegativities and are compared with other estimates. INTRODUCTION Calculation of the electronegativities of the rare-earth elements is interesting to show how these metals stand relative to the other metals and to each other, and also possibly to systematize the thermochemical data on them.

Fatal accidents at coal mines throughout the United States numbered 170 during May , 1923 , according to reports received by the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior from State mine inspectors . The production of coal during the month was 54,649,000 tons ; hence , the fatality rate was 3.11 per million tons . In May last year the fatality rate was 4.22 , based upon an output of 20,636,000 tons , including 35,000 tons of anthracite . Because of the miners ' suspension of work last year, the production of fresh-mined anthracite in May 1922 was completely stopped ; in May 1923 the anthracite output was 9,573,000 tons . For bituminous mines alone , the fatality rate in May 1923 was 2.67 per million tons as compared with 4.17 in May a year ago . During the first five months of the present year , the fatality rate for bituminous mines was 3.55 per million tons , based on 809 deaths , as against a rate of 3.70 for the corresponding months last year, based on 611 deaths . The rate for 1923 represents a reduction of 4 per cent . For anthracite mines alone the five-month fatality rate for 1923 was 5.36 per million tons , based on 228 fatalities , as against a rate of 6.72 for the first five months of 1922 based on 147 fatalities . The rate for 1923 represents a reduction of 20 per cent . The average fatality rate for May during the past ten years ( 1913-1922 ) is 3.37 per million tons for bituminous coal mines and 6.02 per million tons for anthracite mines . A gas explosion , due to open light , occurred on May 6 at Aguila , Colorado , and resulted in the death of ten men . This explosion brought the number of "major disasters " in 1923 to 4 , with a loss of 145 lives . During the first five months of last year, there were 7 similar disasters with a loss of 82 lives . The year's record to date for all fatalities from all causes shows a reduction in the fatality rates per million tons from haulage accidents and from falls of roof and coal , an increase in explosions of gas and dust and in accidents due to electricity , and no change in the fatality rate from explosives . The reductions in haulage accidents and in falls of roof and coal are particularly gratifying, because these two classes of accidents usually cause about 65 per cent of all fatalities in the coal-mining industry . Areal distributions for ash, total sulfur, and sulfur forms were developed for the top 12 inches, the middle section, the bottom 8 inches, and the total seam of Pittsburgh coal in southwestern Pennsylvania. The sulfur and ash exhibit an apparent high local variability. As a general rule, both the sulfur and ash show high concentrations in the top 12 inches and in the bottom 8 inches of the seam relative to the concentrations observed in the middle section of the seam. The high-low sulfur and ash concentrations in the top 12 inches of the seam are not coincident with the high-low sulfur and ash concentrations in either the middle section or the bottom 8 inches of the seam. With respect to sulfur and ash, it is suggested that the top and bottom sections of the Pittsburgh coal may reflect both a syngenetic and epigenetic origin. Present data support the belief that paleotopography controlled Pittsburgh seam deposition. Evidence is presented to show that channels were cut at various times into the semilithified sediments that buried the Pittsburgh seam. In this channeling process, portions of the Pittsburgh coal may have been eroded away. Following channel development, the lower part of the Pittsburgh sandstone filled the complex system of braided channels to produce the "want areas" encountered in present mining operations. In localized areas of the Pittsburgh seam, impingement of Pittsburgh sandstone may be responsible for the lateral displacement of the coal. Information of this type becomes important in the assessment of exploration data, in the development of a quality control system for mine output, and in mine life planning.

STRIKES in the steel and copper industries adversely affected production in the minerals industry in 1959. Because of an excellent first half of the year and rapid recovery of production after the steel settlement, most statistical indicators were higher than the recession-recovery year 1958. Domestic production of metals declined by 9 percent, but nonmetals (except fuels) increased by 8 percent. Ferrous-metal mine production was down 8 percent, and base-metal mine production was off 11 percent. Employment was high during the first half of the year, but averaged lower than in 1958. Stocks continued to decline as a whole, but crude metal ore stocks actually increased. The indexes of stocks at yearend were still high as compared with 1955. Prices were firm throughout the year. A new index of average unit mine value is presented for the first time in this review; it showed a very slight decline in average mine realization for 1959. The percentage share of supply from imports increased in some commodities, due in large part to the shutdown of domestic iron, steel, and copper industries.

Experimental modifications have been made by the Bureau of Mines on standard pneumatic rock drills to reduce the noise of the air exhaust, drill steel resonance noise, and noise radiated by the drill body. A close-fitting case and muffler around the drill body, consisting of a metallic honeycomb skeleton filled with viscoelastic absorber on the inside and a durable outer shell, provide both exhaust and drill body noise muff ling and absorption. Drill steel resonance noise is reduced by a constrained-layer treatment consisting of a tubular metal cover bonded to the ouside of the sod by a viscoelastic filler. Damping alloy components have been developed to reduce metallic resonance noise. Combined, these modifications have reduced the drilling noise level in granite from 115 dbA to 97 dbA. Data are presented on the individual and combined effects of these modifications on drilling noise and performance.

This report describes bench-scale studies and pilot-plant development of the Bureau of Mines process for roasting iron ores with a ferrous scrap reductant, such as discarded automobile hulks, to yield artificial magnetite. Quality magnetic concentrates containing about 66 percent iron and 6 percent silica with iron recoveries of over 90 percent were obtained after roasting fine-grained oxidized or nonmagnetic taconite with unburned, sheared automobile hulks in a rotary kiln. The relatively complete oxidation of the lighter gage metal in the automobile during roasting resulted in a metallic byproduct consisting of the unconsumed heavier gage metal scrap. This residual or tailored scrap is potentially useful as heavy melting stock and has more value than the original automobile hulk.

The Bureau of Mines has determined the heat capacity and enthalpy values for beryllium sulfate (BeS04) throughout the temperature ranges of 10° to 300° K in an adiabatic calorimeter, and 350° to 860° K in a Bunsen-type ice calorimter, The heat-capacity data were extrapolated to 0° K, and smooth values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were reported at 10-degree intervals between 0° and 300° K. The method of least squares was used to fit the enthalpy data with an algebraic equation. The equation also was used to calculate values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function at 50-degree intervals between 300° and 900° K.

This Bureau of Mines report presents the initial development of a two-dimensional method of analysis for inclusions in plates in which the deformed shape of an open hole and the separate structural behavior of inclusion and plate with hole are used to obtain the stresses and strains in the inclusion only. In this report the solution for a circular inclusion is presented because a direct verification of the results with previous solutions was possible. The numerical results were in exact agreement with those obtained with the equations of Sezawa and Donnell. The equations developed are less complex than those of Sezawa and more general, for a circular inclusion, than those of Donnell. Stresses and strains in the inclusion are in terms of the elastic constants of the inclusion and the plate and the biaxial stress field applied far away. The elastic constants can be all different. An important conclusion from this work is that a difference in Poisson's ratios between inclusion and plate may be as important as a difference in Young's moduli between inclusion and plate in producing the inclusion effect. Many problems in mining and rock mechanics can be treated as inclusion problems. The understanding of inclusion behavior on a physical basis should provide the solutions to some of these problems.

Two series of tests were run with planer model 'BB": one at the Arickaree mine of the San Francisco Chemical Co., Rich County, Utah, and one at the Roslyn No. 9 mine of the Northern Pacific Railway Co., Roslyn, Wash. The tests at the Arickaree mine were started on June 25, 1958, and continued until September 30, 1958. Prior to these tests, an electrically activated remote-control system was installed, and other modifications were made on the planer. The tests showed that the planer in general and the remote-control system worked very well; however, the various cutting tools used would not consistently penetrate and cut the phosphate rock. This indicated that the cutterhead design had to be changed before the planer would operate efficiently in phosphate beds similar to the "A" bed in the Arickaree mine.

Examination of numberous disasters , such as fires or explosions , and the evidence at coroner's inquests following such disasters in several States , have shown the writer how frequently men in charge of the operation and safety of mines have forgotten, or have failed to learn , details of safe mining practices , After securing a position of trust as superintendent , or a certificate of competency to act as shot -firer , fire boss , or mine foreman, some men seem to have felt it unnecessary to keep safety principles in mind , or to keep abreast of current progress in safety ; they have concentrated on getting out maximum tonnage at minimum cost . • In coroner's inquests , the testimony after disasters has shown that firebosses , foreman , and coal -mine superintendents are noticeably lacking in knowledge of the provisions of the State mining law relating to fans or doors , frequency of crosscuts , nature of stoppings necessary , electrical equipment , records of daily mine examinations , quantity of air required , or splitting and overcasting .

In the interest of safety in metal mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: That underground metal mines be equipped with a main fan in a fireproof housing, located preferably on the surface. The fan installation should be designed to ventilate the mine adequately throughout and to permit prompt reversal of direction of air flow. Many metal mines depend for ventilation upon natural flow of air, assisted by the exhaust from pneumatic drills and by compressed air blown into the workings. Others also ventilate separate headings or sections with fans and blowers. Relatively few have o mechanical ventilating system that controls the coursing of air throughout the mine.

Cerium and thorium sulfides have found use as crucible materials for melting certain radioactive metals. However, thermodynamic treatment of these sulfides has been hampered by lack of experimentally derived entropy values. This Bureau of Mines report describes heat-capacity measurements between 51° and 298° K, and entropy evaluations at 298.15° K, for cerium monosulfide (CeS), cerium sesquisulfide (Ce2S3), and thorium disulfide (THS2). The entropy values, with Literature results for the heats of formation, are used to obtain free energies of formation at 298.15°K. MATERIALS The samples used in this work were supplied by Prof, Leo Brewer of the Department of Chemistry, University of California. The methods of preparation and some of the physical and chemical properties of these sulfides were given by Eastman and coworkers.3 4/ Chemical analyses, conducted in our laboratory, gave the following results:
