The paper discusses the reasons for the introduction of load-haul-dump (LHD) units into Greenside Colliery, and the circumstances leading to the replacement of conventional mechanized equipment on a trial basis in the mining operations on No. 2, 4, and 5 seams. An outline is given of the factors governing the selection and introduction of these units into coal mining, and the associated mining and engineering aspects involved in the optimization of their use. Operating statistics comparing the performance of conventional and LHD equipment are included.

Syncrude Canada Ltd. produces synthetic crude oil from Canada?s vast oil sand reserves by mining the oil sand, then separating and upgrading the ultra-viscous crude oil, or bitumen (~ 106mPa s @ 10ºC). At Syncrude?s Aurora Mine, about 16 000 tonnes oil sand per hour are mined and then transported 5 km by slurry pipeline to the extraction plant. The waste tailings stream is then transported about10 km by pipeline to a settling/sand storage basin. Oil sand slurries are reasonably concentrated (> 35%solids by volume), typically have a sand particle diameter between 0.18 and 0.3 mm, and are transported at reasonably high velocities (3 to 5.5 m/s). As one would expect, pipeline wear is a significant problem in this industry, in terms of both unplanned production outages and maintenance costs. In order to develop strategies to extend pipe life and to focus more on condition-based maintenance scheduling (as opposed to preventative maintenance), Syncrude has implemented an ongoing pipe wear measurement programme. Regular measurements of pipe wall thickness are obtained at various circumferential positions at a number of axial locations along each pipeline, using an ultrasonic scanning technique. In this paper, we show how wear rates vary as a function of axial location and circumferential position for oil sand hydro transport and coarse particle tailings pipelines. The specific positions at which peak wear rates occur are explained by considering the characteristics of the coarse particle slurry flows to which the pipelines are exposed.

To have been invited to deliver this second CMMI lecture is an honour that I deeply appreciate. But, when I contrast my qualifications for delivering it, with those of Sir Alistair Framet, who delivered the inaugural lecturet in the series, or with those of other members of the Council, I feel rather an imposter. Far from having been a miner al my life, I have been associated with the mining industry on a part-time basis for a mere eight years. However, I encourage myself with two recollections. The first is the admission of the great Sherlock Holmes that he was often guided to the truth by the erroneous opinions expressed to him by Dr Watson. I may be able to perform a similar service for you. Secondly, I recall that, when I was a member of the Diplomatic Service, I was quite often asked to address representative gatherings of such professional people as the police, architects, dress designers, teachers, doctors, funeral directors, bird fanciers, and so on. Since it would have been pointless to pretend that I was expert in any of their businesses, I used to resort to the technique of announcing as my theme' A diplomat looks at the police' or whatever profession it was. They fortunately took it as a compliment that their profession was apparently one that diplomats spent a lot of time brooding over. They could also afford to laugh of any criticism that I might make because it could be ascribed to ignorance rather than informed malice. I hope that you will do the same.

The elution of gold from activated carbon using deionized water by R. J. DAVIDSON, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Rhodes) (Visitor) and D. DUNCANSON, H.N.C., B.Sc. Hons. (Strathclyde) (Visitor) The pretreatment of gold-loaded activated carbon with a relatively strong sodium cyanide solution prior to elution with deionized water at 90 to 125°Chas been shown to have a most beneficial effect on the elution of gold. The findings emphasize the important role played by the calcium cation and the hydroxyl anion in effecting efficient elution of gold. The elution of the relatively unstable complexes of silver and base metals with cyanide was also significantly affected by the ratio of the sodium cyanide to sodium hydroxide in the reagents used in the pretreatment stage. It was demonstrated that the use of 0,5 bed volume of a pretreatment reagent comprising 10 per cent sodium cyanide stabilized with I per cent sodium hydroxide for safety reasons resulted in a virtually 100 per cent recovery of adsorbed gold, silver, and base metals on subsequent elution with deionized water. The elution procedure takes a relatively short time, about 14 hours at 90°C (7 bed volumes) or 3 hours if pressure elution at 125°C (4 to 5 bed volumes) is used. Because the mechanism of elution after pretreatment entails the shifting of a physical rather than a chemical equilibrium, the higher the gold loading on the activated carbon, the more efficient is the elution procedure. When compared with other elution procedures, the proposed method appears to have several economic advantages.

This paper deals with an experimental programme carried out with a gold analyser in the period June to September 1979 at Loraine Gold Mines. The results were found to be reproducible, with no overall or conditional bias when the measurements were compared with those obtained from chip samples. The standard error of estimation of a 3 m reef exposure, which was the sampling interval, can be reduced by a factor of 2,5 if the complete stretch is scanned, rather than the taking of one chip sample in its centre. Complete statistical and computational procedures were developed for the fitting of the normal-Iognormal model to observed analyser data and for the determination of the most likely gold grade for a particular analyser measurement. (This corection procedure is necessary since a significant number of negative analyser measurements can be observed.) Panel averages of uncorrected scans showed a small conditional bias relative to those of corrected scans. However, uncorrected panel averages can be used for on-the-spot decisions regarding whole panels. For standard calculations of ore reserves, use should be made of corrected scans. Under reasonable assumptions, the use of the detector in the selective mining of low-grade narrow reefs such as the Basal Reef at Loraine Gold Mines, when compared with the conventional chip-sampling method, can result in a saving of as high as R40 million in present-money terms over the life of a project. The difference could be even larger in a highly variable reef like the B Reef at Loraine Gold Mines.

This paper discusses the mine planning process for Letseng diamond mine in the Kingdom of Lesotho, in conjunction with the various software packages used during the process. The major pillars of the long-term mine planning process at Letseng are pit optimization followed by pit design and scheduling. Letseng uses Gemcom Whittle and GEMS for pit optimization and design and Runge XPAC for scheduling. The output of the mine planning process results in the generation of published mineral reserves and provides input into the Letseng overall business plan. The process of defining the key inputs for the entire mine planning process is discussed, which covers: ? Pit optimization ? Slope design as an input ? Diamond price inputs ? Since the early 1970s, Korea has constructed many large-scale tunnels and underground storage caverns in response to the rapid industrial development. The rock mechanics engineers have accumulated valuable experiences in the area of underground space technologies. But they still face technical challenges in environmental and safety aspects. To discuss those challenges in Korea, a brief engineering description of underground space projects including oil and gas storage, food storage, pumped storage power plant, transportation tunnels, waterway tunnels, and radioactive waste disposal is presented. Mechanical and hydrological stability analyses of the storage caverns in Korea are also introduced. Depuis le début des années soixante-dix, le développement industriel rapide en Corée a entraîné la construction de nombreuses galeries et cavernes de stockage souterraines. Les ingénieurs de mécanique minière ont donc accumulé des expériences précieuses dans le domaine de la technologie de l’espace souterrain. Cependant, ils font toujours face à de nombreux défis techniques en ce qui concerne les aspects de l’environnement et de la sécurité. Pour présenter ces défis en Corée, l’étude présente décrit les projets d’espace souterrain, y compris le stockage de pétrole et de gaz, de nourriture, centrales de stockage pompé, tunnels de transport, tunnels navigables, et évacuation des déchets radioactifs. Des analyses de stabilité mécanique et hydrologique des cavernes de stockage en Corée sont aussi présentées. The problems encountered in the design of control systems for milling cir- cuits when the model of the system and the model parameters are uncertain are discussed. Considering these uncertainty factors has led to the development of a technique that gives a quantitative assessment of real system stability, reveals the trade-offs between performance and stability and helps the designer in deciding what level of model complexity to use in the controller design. Furthermore, it allows for on- or off-line optimization of the milling circuit performance as it provides the base for the design of a controller which is stable over the plant operating range.

This paper presents the development of a regrind facility design at BHP Billiton's Leinster Nickel Operations (LNO) in Western Australia. The recovery opportunity was identified from an analysis of plant operating data together with scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements on relevant tailings streams from LNO. A laboratory procedure was developed to determine the potential recovery improvement of installing a regrind facility at LNO. The last step in formulating the process flow sheet and defining the process design criteria was to construct and operate a pilot plant, which incorporated four banks of flotation cells and an Xstrata M20 Isa Mill. Pilot plant on/off trials were used to define the expected metallurgical benefit. A prefeasibility engineering design and cost estimate was completed. Following a successful internal business evaluation, a feasibility study is currently underway.

KHD Humboldt Wedag HPGRs are applied world-wide, and consistently prove to be well designed and reliable operating units, with their performance meeting the pre-set standards. This publication summarizes some of the features and experiences for recent applications in treatment of copper ore, coarse iron ore, and gold ore. Summary data of roll surface wear life and operating data are given, together with operational observations. In addition, effects of feed segregation and truncated feed are discussed, as well as the implications of a product recycle flow sheet.

Published parameters from the Mufulira copper in situ leach (ISL) in Zambia are used for order-of-magnitude flow-rate calculations for an envisaged gold ISL in back-filled Witwatersrand stopes. A successful leach operation requires that the porous medium, usually a sand, has a hydraulic conductivity in excess of 5 x10-7m/second (i.e. a permeability >50 millidarcies).Empirical evidence suggests that average linear velocities would be of the order of 60 m/day if the backfill has the grain size of a fine sand. The proposed gold lixiviant would probably be an alkaline or ammonium thiosulphate, not cyanide. The resultant sulphate-rich ground and drainage waters could probably be processed using existing purification techniques to produce gypsum and magnesium/calcium carbonate. Within the next 100 years it is inevitable that solution mining will find widespread application on the Witwatersrand, if not for gold extraction, then certainly for water remediation purposes.

In the mining and metals industry, business strategy demands that leaders extract more from any set of capital assets. This improvement is achieved through a combination of continuous improvement and upgrading of the assets. Continuous Improvement involves a series of incremental changes in the workplace to stabilize the process, remove waste, and test the limits of process capability. Enhanced Technology involves the replacement of an existing as set with a different process or equipment, to achieve a similar function in a more efficient and effective manner. The paper compares and contrasts the two methodologies and outlines the key business considerations which dictate how and when to select one or other improvement method. The paper also addresses the implications for these two improvement methods for those undertaking R&D in support of the mining and metals business.

Stress analysis in a rock medium is essential to determine the stress concentration between two consecutive circular holes and prediction of fracture behaviour. When two consecutive circular holes in a hard rock medium such as granite are loaded internally by the pressure of non-explosive expansion material (NEEM), stress concentration occurs between the holes which then causes the rock to fracture. In this work, finite element (FE) analysis using Phase2 code was employed to study the stress concentration between two consecutive circular holes under internal pressure induced by NEEM. Effects of different hole diameters and spacings, rock properties and NEEM pressures have been analysed. The data gained from the numerical analysis and analytical solutions were then used to develop two models. These models were then modified by using the FE data and polynomial regression analysis. The developed analytical models showed to be in a very good agreement with the FE analysis. Hence, the developed models can be used with confidence to determine stress distribution and concentration factors around two consecutive circular holes in a hard and brittle rock which are loaded internally by the pressure induced from the NEEM. Acid heap leaching has been extensively applied to the processing of copper oxide ores, with recovery of copper by solvent extraction and electrowinning. Heap leaching has also been extended to the treatment of secondary sulphide copper ores, where oxidative conditions are generated in aerated heaps by the bacterially-assisted oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric iron. The treatment of low-grade chalcopyrite ores has recently been the focus of research, with Mintek playing a prominent role. When processing chalcopyrite ores, more complex column test work is performed, which incorporates the prediction and simulation of temperature behaviour in pyrite-containing heaps. Mintek has devised a trade-marked column leaching apparatus (SmartColumn?) for the simulation of the natural temperature profile development in pyrite-containing heaps. As heap leach applications are becoming more complex, the parameters that need to be built into the design and operation of heap leach plants are growing in number, and the amount of data to be collected and processed, and the number of decisions to be taken daily, are also increasing. Mintek has therefore developed the HeapStar® administrative advisory software, as a guidance system to ensure that the correct protocols are implemented at various stages of the leach cycle.

The South African democratically-elected government instituted policies and legislation that are intended to bring about change and transformation in the country and have drastically affected different industries, among others, the mining industry. The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA) and the Broad-based Socio-economic Empowerment Charter (Mining Charter) were introduced in order to redress previous inequalities and to promote women's employment in the mining industry. This research evaluates the practical implementation of the MPRDA and the Mining Charter with specific reference to women in underground mining. A quantitative research paradigm was used. Data were collected through a process of a face-to-face interview surveys utilizing a structured questionnaire. The research setting was limited to the platinum-mining industry in the area of Rustenburg in the North West Province. The study population consisted of 195 available women working undergound at the mine. It is clear from the findings that mining companies are facing major challenges in their attempt to incorporate women in underground mining activities. Company policies regarding these issues must be firmly in place; however, the challenge lies in the translation of these policies into practice. In this regard, managers will have to play a leading role in the successful phasing in of women into the underground mining arena.

Pert, and how Pert techniques can be used in modern mine management By E. J. Boome, A. C. Schmidt C.A. (S.A.) This paper covers the stages of planning required to be performed and the implementation of the plan from grass roots to the partial completion of the sinking of a mine shaft system. The various steps involved in the planning are also examined in some detail. The experience gained in this project and the conclusions reached convince the authors that Pert Planning is a valuable aid to top management.

Research into the ferrous metallurgy of Rhodesian Iron Age societies M. D. PRENDERGAST (Visitor) Iron-working was a widespread economic activity in Iron Age Rhodesia, and merits historical and metallurgical investigation. However, the research done so far has been incidental and poorly disseminated. This paper reviews the available evidence and the ways in which it can be interpreted by archaeologists and historical metallurgists. Particular attention is paid to smelting techniques and current metallurgical research, and brief suggestions are made for future research. v074n06p254.pdf
