INTRODUCTION, CONCEPTS, AND MEASUREMENT Introduction Periods in the history of man, from his earliest appearance to the present, are often characterized by the principal materials used. In nearly all cases, the material or fuel is of mineral origin-stone, copper, bronze, iron, coal, and so forth-indicating the principal ingredient of the tools or source of power of the period. Each of these periods represented great improvement over the preceding one in terms of human well-being, as measured by population growth and other indicators (Cipolla, 1978). A major reason for the improvements in production and well-being was the nature of the material or fuel, each successively superior to the preceding, which made it possible to produce more food, fuel, shelter, and clothing with a given amount of labor. If we accept this well-documented description of economic progress as accurate, we may then turn to the consideration of two related questions concerning this development. The first, easily answered,-is why man spent long periods of time (millenia, in many cases) making tools from inferior materials, such as copper, instead of passing directly to superior materials, such as iron and steel. The second, closely related question, concerns the relation between the rate of economic growth and the quantity of mineral reserves available at any time. For the first question, the answer is that the technology required to discover, extract, and process each successive material had to be discovered and developed before the material could be used. Once the technology was available, the new material could be and was exploited widely, raising productivity-output per unit of labor- and consequent consumption per person. This familiar idea underlies a fundamental principle of the economics of resources, namely, at any time, available resources depend upon available technology. No mineral or other raw material is a resource unless the technology has been developed to utilize it. But once the technology is at hand, the new resources associated with it provide the means for economic growth and rising levels of living. This principle is subject to certain conditions. For example, governments or other institutions may prevent a mineral from being used, even though the technology is available. And, if a mineral is located in a remote place, transportation charges may make it uneconomic to exploit. Such minor qualifications do not, however, change the thrust of the argument that technology is the overriding determinant. With respect to the second question, it might seem apparent that the greater the quantity of reserves available, up to some point, the more economic growth will be facilitated. This line of reasoning leads to the conclusion that as re- serves are consumed the quantity available will be reduced and economic growth will eventually be restrained. Reasoning of this sort underlies much popular (and scholarly) thought, in which depletion of mineral and other resources is assumed to lead to constraints on economic growth, through higher materials costs and absolute limitations on materials use. A simplified two-dimensional model to analyze time-dependent load distribution and surface subsidence associated with longwall mining geometries is described. The model is based on the theory of beams resting on inelastic foundations and includes visco-elastic behavior of immediate floor strata, non-linear behavior of coal pillars, elastic behavior of face supports, and visco-elastic behavior of the overburden strata. The relative importance of the different variables affecting the performance of longwall mining geometries from ground control point of view is also analyzed. The model has been validated for field observations from one Illinois longwall mine.

Estimation of local recovered tonnage and its grade above a cutoff is of paramount importance during the exploration and development stages of any mineral deposit. The spatial dis- tribution of grades as well as the cumulative distribution must be defined. In this paper, Probability Kriging, an estimator based upon rank order statistics and the estimation of the distribution of point grades within a panel, is applied to the Manhattan gold deposit. Mapping the conditional probabilities that estimated panel grades exceed a cutoff is useful to the understanding of the distribution of mineralization in a structurally controlled gold deposit.

The goal of most in-plant studies is to identify factors that limit overall plant performance. A major finding from such studies is that interactions between unit operations are always important, usually specific for a particular ore and plant combination, and are one of the limits to plant performance. Computer simulation based on process models developed from in-plant studies is a useful tool for identifying limits to performance and for estimating the effects of proposed changes at both pilot and industrial plant scales. Examples involving interactions between comminution and various separation and agglomeration processes are presented, and directions for future development discussed.

The definition of sustainable development is often taken from the so-called “Brundtland” report, requiring that activities of the current generation not detract from the potential welfare of future generations. Mining is often held up as unsustainable in this regard, since the extracted resource is non-renewable. Yet Brundtland’s definition of sustainable development also requires that the current generation address the disparity in welfare across the globe, a facet of Brundtland’s report that most have ignored. This paper examines the impact of mining on the welfare of the poor, empirically assessing mining’s contribution to this second facet of sustainable development.

Sediment consolidation in highly flocculated suspensions occurs only if the self-weight of the material exceeds its compressive yield stress. A simple model for sediment densification is presented and applied to the simulation of thickener operations. Measured relationships between sediment self-weight and the extent of consolidation are used to establish underflow densities. Supernatant turbidity data provide the information necessary to predict overflow clarity. It is shown that thickener depth can play a role in determining solids-handling capacity as well as dewatering performance. The application of the model to the design and operation of full-scale thickeners is described.

This paper presents a method for three-phase foam preparation recipe optimization. The pressurized foam is injected into porous media of gob area for prevention and fighting of SPONCOM fires. The method includes laboratory experiments for main foam properties as well as mathematical optimization procedure. Optimization criteria are formulated reflecting foam application purposes. Complex polymetallic sulfide ore deposits occur in Tohoku district, northern part of Honshu island, Japan. The ore is locally called "Kuroko” ( black ore ) and is compactly composed of fine grained sulfide minerals of such principal metals as copper, lead, zinc and iron. Currently one of Kuroko mill plants is producing such concentrates as copper, lead, zinc, pyrite, barite, and clay minerals, mainly employing differential flotation techniques. This paper describes briefly the progress of techniques in Kuroko processing over the past thirty years and also the present state of Kuroko processing and its challenges to be studied and overcome in the future.

A common belief is that autogenous grinding suits itself only to certain oretypes. It is shown that properly designed autogenous grinding can be used even with very difficult ores with energy consumptions which are equal or lower than obtained with rod-ball mill grinding. The basic feature in the design is the large port grate developed by Outokumpu. The scale-up of the mills can be done on the basis of the base mill concept. It enables to compare different mill sizes and types. Simple scale-up equations are presented based on actual mill data and experimental work.

The controlled addition of ammonia to cyanide solutions inhibits the leaching of copper minerals but extracts up to 80% Au using as little as 10% of the cyanide compared with conventional cyanidation of copper-gold ores. The solubility of copper minerals and copper speciation in solution is dependent on NH3, CN-, pH and Eh. Rotating disc and electrochemical studies show that gold is leached by a mixed Cu-CN--NH3 complex with either Cu(II) or O2 as oxidant. This complex is slowly oxidised to CuCN and Cu(OH)2 by air.

The world's barite reserve base is adequate for at least 100 years at the current consumption rate. China, India and the United States are expected to remain the leading producing countries, and the United States will continue to be the largest consumer. None of the known substitutes for barium sulfate are expected to impact existing applications. World production in 1995 was 4.41 Mt (4.86 million st), which is about 50% of capacity. Consumption is directly proportional to hydrocarbon well installation activity. Imports are expected to continue to supply more than half of the US requirements.

The role of calcareous minerals in that area of the environmental improvement program involving the control or elimination of sulfur oxide emissions is discussed, and a new concept in gas scrubbing, rendering possible the use of calcareous rocks more extensively for this purpose, is presented. Calcareous rocks are defined as the more common limestones, consisting essentially of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. The effect of magnesium carbonate on the reaction rate of limestones and lime toward sulfur oxides in aqueous scrubbing systems is pointed out. The relative economics of lime- stone versus lime as aqueous scrubbing reagents for sulfur dioxide are indicated.

While the United States has been the world's largest volume producer and marketer of phosphatic fertilizers for many years, it has recently suffered heavy losses for a variety of reasons. While improved economic performance is expected, it is still at least a year or two away. But when recovery does manifest itself, it will likely yield only mediocre profits, due in part to the fact that about 50 percent of output is export-dependent. Therefore, there appears to be limited likelihood that profits will be adequate to justify the further outlay of large amounts of capital for expansion.

Results are presented that were gathered during field-scale testing of an innovative technology, sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), designed to treat and control acid mine drainage (AMD). The project was performed under the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), which is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy through an Interagency Agreement. The MWTP is implemented by MSE Technology Applications, Inc., located in Butte, Montana. A field-scale test is described in which the subsurface workings of an abandoned mine were used as an "in situ biological reactor."

Mineral exploration decision problems involve the economic evaluation of upgraded geological information and the costs of obtaining it. This paper presents a valuation theory of risky projects applicable to the analysis of exploration investments. The valuation model is predicated on the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) from financial economics; its parameters can be objectively measured from publicly available information. Geostatistics is used to derive simplified random cash flow models which incorporate the impact of improved deposit knowledge in terms of reduced estimation variance. The application of the theory is illustrated by means of hypothetical exploration optimization examples.

Intense, tropical weathering of Cretaceous-Tertiary sediments has developed similar laterites in distant areas of the Amazon Basin. In two areas, Trombetas and Paragomina s, bauxites of commercial potential arc found. The bauxite comes mostly from the lower horizon of the three component laterite. The laterite is overlain by a clay cover, possibly an integral part of the weathered profile. The laterites are found on almost flat plateaus with individual areas of up to 80km2. There is a close relationship between the morphology and the ldterites. The process of lateritization is allegedly Pliocence but probably continues today.

Long-term coal mining plans are often based on attainment of an average cost of coal. This is achieved by blending low- and high-cost coal production. Coal that is beyond the economic limit of the reserve is mined in a misguided effort to improve reserve recovery. Long-term contracts should be least cost-based and generate the best net present value from the economic reserve within the context of a rational mine plan. The selected economic reserve should he mined on a low- to high-cost basis to benefit from the time value of money.

Many gold ores which are not only submicroscopic but also rich in arsenic and organic carbon, for example Dongbeizhai Mine, have been found in china. These ores belong to the most refractory ores The key to the recovery of gold from these ores is preoxidation. Dongbeizhai ores have been tested with biooxidation, chlorination, double oxidation, acidic and alkaline pressure oxidation, catalytic oxidation, NITROX and roasting. To date it appears that either roasting or pressure oxidation is optimal. It is suggested that the flotation-roasting (or pressure oxidation)-CIL process should be used to treat this type of ore.

Serrana's deposit contains three types of ore: oxidized, micaceous and silicate-carbonate. The results presented refer to characterization and fundamental studies performed on fractions resulting from the purification of five samples from the silicate-carbonate type collected in the mine. Each type was purified and submitted to mineralogical characterization, zeta potential determinations, and microflotation experiments. The samples, with exception of the barite, are mineralogically complex and the selectivity between apatite and gangue minerals is poor. Under the current state of art, it is impossible to feed the plant with the silicate-carbonate ore, unless it is blended with the standard oxidized ore.
