INTRODUCTION In June of 1992, the Bureau of Reclamation, United States Department of the Interior, awarded the contract for construction of the Sixth Water Aqueduct to the Fedrick-Redpath Joint Venture. This aqueduct, a segment of the Diamond Fork Power System, Central Utah Project, diverts water from Strawberry Reservoir into Sixth Water Creek and, when complete, will replace the old Strawberry Tunnel which was driven in the early 1900's. The new aqueduct is being built primarily as a result of deterioration of the old tunnel, but will also have a higher capacity and more positive control than the old tunnel as well as the capability to incorporate a turbine into the system at a later date. The Fedrick-Redpath Joint Venture is comprised of C.R. Fedrick, Inc. of Novato, California and J.S. Redpath Corporation of Tempe, Arizona. Fedrick, with its experience in pipelines and heavy construction, will construct the 4200 ft surface pipeline and flow control structure; Redpath, the managing partner, performed the underground work consisting of a 600 ft vertical shaft and 3300 ft tunnel. The project is located in the Uintah National Forest, approximately 20 miles east of Provo, Utah at a mean elevation of 7000 feet above sea level.

The objective of this study is to classify ore and waste in a selected mine. The support vector machine, was used for the classification purpose, is applied to a zinc ore body in a skarn deposit located in the central region of the Peruvian Andes. The input parameters used for the model are spatial coordinates and the lithological information of the ore body. The input data was divided into training and testing data sets and the performance of the model was tested using the testing data set. The results show that more than 76% of the data could be properly classified by this method. The ore waste maps of the deposit was then developed using SVM model. From the result it was observed that a comparatively very few number of cells classified as ore. The ore is concentrated in small lodes at the middle of the volume of study, and not uniformly distributed throughout the study area. The lithological map of the deposit was also constructed as it was used as an input parameter for the SVM model. The indicator kriging was used for generation of lithological map of the ore body. To many who for years have scrutinized the US mineral supply picture, recent, often strident debate on present-day security of many critical mineral supplies echoes sentiments repeatedly expressed in the past decade by the minerals industry. At no time since the last world war has such a flurry of public concern been expressed for the economy's mineral sector. Where once mineral availability problems were relegated to the newspaper's business section or not reported at all, today comprehensive analyses of our international mineral posture are discussed in detail by some of the nation's most respected and widely read periodicals. In past years, disinterest was also experienced whenever the mining industry attempted to carry its message to Congress, the public, and the government's executive branch. Among minerals professionals, the past decade was a time of particular frustration clue to serious erosion ill US ability to competitively produce the vast array of raw materials vital to the economy acid national defense. Fervent calls for immediate attention were simply not answered. These professionals have understood that mining and agriculture are the primary sources of wealth, fulfilling virtually all needs and creating and sustaining jobs. Why then has it been so difficult to raise the consciousness of the American public, and even more surprisingly, of the government and national leadership? The answer to this question is perhaps endemic to how government functions, but pore important, it begs that mining professionals capitalize on the opportunity and the attention now at hand. Carefully conceived and implemented actions by both private and public sectors are needed more than ever before in the past 35 years. To this end, it is vitally important to seek out and resolve the root causes of supply problems and not dwell on superficial solutions. The following discussion attempts to establish a simple framework to view this process. It does not presume to be an exposition of cause and effect, but hopefully identifies some needed steps. Growing Awareness in the 1970s Of all events stimulating current concern, certainly the OPEC oil embargo has left the deepest impression. It was inevitable that after such a shock, man. Americans would begin asking whether the US was as vulnerable to cutoffs of minerals as it was to oil cutoffs. Then, when serious trade security questions surfaced in sonic mineral-rich nations in Africa and the Persian Gulf, the ominous term ''resource war" began to be heard. Countries such as South Africa, Zaire, Zambia, and Zimbabwe have suddenly become key areas for testing our national security resolve. As the US witnesses the influx of Marxist influence in many sub-Saharan exporting nations and the rising threat to free world access to critical materials and energy, the assurance of adequate supplies is becoming a national issue at last. The US is now learning that self-sufficiency for many vitally important mineral commodities has vanished. Of course, it did not vanish overnight; it had been leaking away for years, and the trend was noted by industry and a few in government. Within the minerals community, suspected weaknesses in America's resource posture were sought and found. As a result, the country's heavy reliance on foreign sources fur more than a score of minerals, many extremely vital to security, has been forcefully documented and the case for drastically altering the supply unbalance hits been proposed. The renewed concern for national defense is central to almost all proposals for minimizing US foreign mineral dependence. It is not surprising that many of the voices heard today on the dependency issue are active members or alumni of the militate establishment. Unfortunately, their almost total focus on the security aspects of dependency has tended to obscure important underlying issues which are not directly defense-related. Some of the proposals advanced might mitigate the deeps-dency problems, but they still fall short of curing the underlying problems that have led to a steady loss in mineral self-sufficiency. In almost all instances these problems call be traced to increasing government influence on the free market minerals economy. Some national security proponents seek to attain total self-sufficiency in minerals. Such arguments must he tempered by existing realities. It is easy to demonstrate that the US obtains substantial quantities of sonic essential minerals from potentially insecure sources abroad. That the US will continue to do so in the foreseeable future is not in doubt Uncertainty begins, however, when we try to interpret the significance of these facts. It is important to understand that mineral dependency does not irrevocably lead to vulnerability. Unlike oil, no mineral commodity combines the same degree of universal indispensibility and centralized foreign control of supplies. Moreover, although many US-required minerals are produced by fewer countries than export oil, those minerals cannot approach petroleum in economic or industrial importance. Finally, most foreign supplies come front friendly, secure nations such as Canada, 'Mexico, and Brazil. This, aid more, constitutes a vital element in US economic health as a world trading nation. Introduction Extensive testing in the past ten years has shown that where a uniform natural gamma background is present in the strata bordering a seam, the thickness of the boundary coal left in place after mining can be determined by measuring the attenuation of that radiation (Nelson and Bessinger, 1989). Measurements made by the authors in underground mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky and by others in Wyoming and New Mexico have shown the presence of such a gamma background (Nelson. 1989). Natural gamma coal-thickness sensors of several configurations have been tested in mines owned and operated by the Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) in Pennsylvania and West Virginia (Nelson and Bessinger, 1988). This paper describes the installation of a natural gamma coal-thickness sensor on an operating continuous miner. Previous tests had shown that the NGB-1000 coal-thickness sensor manufactured by American Mining Electronics, Inc., of Huntsville. AL, is an accurate, mine-worthy instrument. This large gamma detector consists of a sensing head and a control panel. The sensing head contains thallium-doped, sodium iodide scintillating crystal, which is coupled to a photomultiplier tube. The control panel contains the electronic components required for calibration, count conversion and display to the operator. Methods Conditions at a Consol mine in northern West Virginia require that 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in.) of coal be left at the roof boundary of continuous miner development sections. This roof coal is required because the shale of the immediate roof is friable and unstable. In the past, operators have used a dirt band that is usually visible near the top of the seam as a guide in maintaining the proper cutting horizon. However, this is not always reliable. Earlier observation showed that the actual thickness of the coal left on the roof varied widely; further, it was noted that occasional, accidental excursions into the immediate roof required supplementary roof control measures, such as installation of planks or center bolts. Thus, it was concluded that operators needed a better source of guidance for control of the cutting horizon, and a roof-coal thickness sensor was scheduled for installation. The NGB-1000 sensor was installed on a Joy 12CM10 continuous miner in June 1988. The sensing head was mounted on the cutter boom of the miner, and the control panel was mounted in the operator's cab. Power for the sensor was initially derived from an intrinsically safe battery power supply. Initial measurements with the sensor showed that the calibration was the same as that used in earlier tests at two other mines, indicating the uniformity of the natural gamma background above the Pittsburgh seam. Operating personnel were initially skeptical of the instrument's accuracy, and were hesitant to use its readings as a guide in maintaining a proper cutting horizon. Because gamma attenuation, the instrument's operating principle, is somewhat abstract, attempts to demonstrate the instrument's accuracy by explaining that principle were generally ineffective. It was found, however, that an operator could usually be convinced of the usefulness of the instrument by placing a large piece of coal of fairly uniform thickness over the instrument's sensing head and allowing the operator to see that the instrument reading increased by an amount very near his estimate of the thickness of the piece. The mine was provided with seven battery power supplies and a charging station. The charging station was kept in the lampman's office, and the mechanic on each shift was instructed that he was responsible for two battery power supplies each day: a freshly charged one to be taken in at the beginning of his shift and a depleted one to be brought out at the end. This system worked well for a few weeks, but eventually some battery power supplies were left in use so long that their batteries were discharged too deeply to allow recharging. In addition, transport and recharging of the batteries represented an additional task for the mechanics, who were already very busy. Consequently, a request was filed with MSHA to allow the sensor to be powered through intrinsic safety barriers by an electronic power supply connected to machine power. The permit was granted, and the sensor was connected to machine power. After the sensor was connected to machine power, the only operating problem experienced was occasional failure of cables. A supply of the required cables was made and delivered to the mine so damaged cables could be quickly replaced. Much of the cable damage could be eliminated by slight modifications to the miner during a rebuild, so that cables could be installed in more protected locations. After the sensor had been in operation for about two months, a survey was made to determine its effect on continuous miner operations. In previous research, coal thickness measurements made in 88 locations by the natural gamma method were compared to measurements made in the same locations by observing drill cuttings and by inspections of drill holes with a borescope. That research showed that the gamma method is at least as accurate as the other two methods (Nelson and Bessinger, 1989) and is also much easier to use. The object of the survey described here was not to assess the accuracy of the natural gamma measurements. but rather to determine the effectiveness of the sensor output as a guide for the operator in maintaining control of the cutting horizon. The evaluation criteria for cost comparison of the Gearless Drive, also called Ringmotor or wrap-around motor, as variable-speed drive with a Twin Drive System using synchronous motors are reviewed. Both mechanical and electrical components of the drive system are considered. The evaluation criteria are described and for the cost comparison the applicable method is demonstrated. The cost comparison is based on a medium and large sized mill system. Each drive package will display cost details with regard to capital cost, maintenance, power losses, overall efficiency, overhead and loss of production. As conclusion the benefits and disadvantages of the two drive/mill packages will be presented together with a payback diagram.

An atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been applied to study the adsorption of collectors on mineral surfaces in a copper/molybdenum flotation system. AFM images show that collectors absorb on chalcopyrite surface in patches at pH 11. A study of temperature effect on surface morphology excludes the possibility that these patches are nanobubbles forming on hydrophobized mineral surface. Hydrocarbon oil absorbs on molybdenite quickly, while KEX (potassium ethyl xanthate) has little affinity for molybdenite. Pyrite is much more reactive in water and its surface is easily coated in Ca(OH)2 solutions at pH 11. Based on the obtained AFM images, the adsorption of chemicals on mineral surface and its impact on copper/molybdenum flotation were discussed.

To reduce the number of injuries resulting from fires on mobile, diesel-powered mine equipment, it is crucial to promptly suppress a fire once it is detected. The focus of this research was to determine the effectiveness of fire suppression agents. Large-scale tests were conducted using five different fire suppression systems based on: dry chemical, wet chemical, dual agent (dry and wet chemical), carbon dioxide, and water mist. Suppression nozzles were placed around the diesel engine where diesel fuel, engine motor oil, and hydraulic circulating oil spray fires were ignited. The results of this study can help mining companies and manufacturers by providing scientifically based data on the capabilities of the different fire suppression systems.

The demand for thermal coal both nationally and internationally is projected to increase rapidly. The marketability of high ETU thermal coal produced in the USA is, however, limited by its high sulfur content. Fortunately, over 70 percent of the sulfur exists in pyritic form. The research conducted at Southern Illinois University indicates that over 90 percent of the pyrite can be removed by simple devices such as concentrating tables, cyclones, or froth flotation cells and the desulfurized coal can be blended with low sulfur western coal to produce EPA compliance coal. Thus, both the low BTU western coal and the high sulfur midwestern coal can be rendered competitive in the utility markets, here and abroad due to improved utilization.

A simple robust rock bolt load gage was tested in the laboratory to define its characteristic behavior and to obtain a measure of its performance. The gage uses three vibrating wire sensors crimped 120 degrees apart into the outer surface of a hollow cylindrical steel tube. The resonant frequencies of the wires change as the gage is loaded. This change is read with a Creare meter developed for the Bureau on a previous contract to read borehole stress gage results. A statistical analysis of data obtained defines the variables influencing results. A U. S. patent (3,914,992) assigned by the author to the Department of the Interior was granted October 28, 1975.

This paper summarizes some preliminary results of the Illinois State Geological Surveys current investigation into surface subsidence resulting from coal mining in Illinois. The purpose of the study is to characterize-the vertical movements that may result from various types of underground coal mining. In general there is relatively little published information about subsidence from room-and-pillar mining as compared with longwall mining. The findings of this study, based on mining operations in a variety of geologic settings, delineate the magnitude, shape, and position of the subsidence profile. Comparisons of case histories of subsidence are based primarily on the extraction ratio and the general geometry of the mine (depth, panel width, and mining height).

Polaris Mine, a Cominco Ltd. property located on Little Cornwallis Island, Northwest Territories, Canada, (Lat. 75°30'), is the world's most northerly base metal mine. Polaris Mine, which commenced operations in late 1981, is characterized by its unique process barge. The lead/zinc concentrator, powerhouse, shops, offices, dry and warehouse have all been incorporated on a 400 ft. long by 100 ft wide by 65 ft high barge. This process barge was constructed in Southern Canada, at Trois Rivieres, Quebec, then towed 3500 miles into its final resting place on the high arctic. This paper describes the unique design of the barge concentrator and deals with the start-up and continuing operation of the Polaris Concentrator.

Arch Mineral's Captain Mine has used the Bucket Wheel Excavator System(BWE) for over 3 years in conjunction with a 180 yd3 (138M3) stripping shovel. The bucket wheels prestrip the soft overburden ahead of the shovel. This soft overburden is brought to the spoil side through a series of shiftable conveyors and placed by a spreader over the ungraded or partially graded shovel spoils. The placement of the soft overburden and top soil is accomplished in a manner that meets the reclamation mandates. The prestripping by the BWE has reduced the incidence of the highwall and spoil slides, depth the stripping shovel has to dig and the volume handled by the pullback draglines.

Nine western states contain significant barite deposits, but most deposits are in Nevada, which has been the principal western producer for more than three decades. Nevada produces about 85% of the total United States production, but about one-half of the barite consumed in the country is imported. Approximately 95% of the barite is used in drilling muds. Sharply decreased oil and gas drilling, starting in early 1982, severely depressed the domestic barite industry. Other problems for western barite include long distances to the areas of major drilling, high railroad-freight rates, and increased barite imports. Bedded deposits, formed by submarine exhalative processes, account for almost all western production, and reserves are large.

Several zinc showings, exhibiting many similarities to the well-known Balmat-Edwards zinc deposits of New York State, occur within the Grenville Supergroup strata of the Mont-Laurier Basin, Quebec. Metallogenic mapping programs have revealed much of the stratigraphic control of this mineralization. This control is observed on both regional and local scales. At the regional scale, these showings are confined to the perimeter of the Mt.-Laurier Basin, while at the local scale, a definite association between the zinc mineralization and dolomitic marble horizons is clearly exhibited from detailed mapping. These new exploration guidelines have proven to be useful for base-metal exploration in the Mt.-Laurier Basin and should be applicable to the entire Grenville Province.

Unlike most ore minerals, the raw materials for lightweight-aggregate, such as clays and shales are abundant everywhere. In view of this ample choice, what are the reasons for many plant failures attributed to the raw material? How can we arrive at a proper choice of the raw material, the proper processing method for the chosen material, predict its behaviour in a plant and the properties of the final product? Determine the uniformity of the raw material and possible harmful impurities? One basic choice is sintered versus kiln-fired aggregate. It will be based on market preferences and availability of the raw material. Almost in every case a good raw material for one process is poison for the other.

A method and equipment have been developed Tor measuring the impact strength of grains of brittle materials. It is shown that brittle materials develop a characteristic particle size distribution when fractured by impact. A simple mathematical model has been found to describe this distribution, and one of the parameters of the model has been designated the r value. The r value is directly proportional .to impact energy and, for fixed impact energy, it becomes a useful criterion of grain strength. Data are presented on the variation of the r value as a function of sample history, initial size, energy input and number of impacts, The results are interpreted in terms of the flaw theory of brittle fracture.

Longwall mining is certainly not new in the United States, having first been used in the late 1800's in Illinois, but the surging acceptance of the method is relatively new. The number of longwall installations in this country are nearly doubling annually as this method continues to prove itself as a coal producer's delight terms of operating cost, performance and safety. Since 1951, several longwall installations have been tried in Barnes and Tucker Company operations. Although all efforts actually proved that the system itself could be used in prevailing conditions, it was not until 1967 that a unit was put in use that proved competitive with regular mining equipment, both conventional and Continuous.
