The paper presents the results of a model built at the World Bank in order to analyze the aluminum industry. Bauxite demand for the year 2000 is estimated as a function of alumina refineries' requirements and of non-metal uses for bauxite. Bauxite supply by countries or regions depends on economic factors such as investment costs, operating and transportation costs, as well as on tariffs and levies. Various scenarios are considered as a result of varying the assumptions of the model.

Based on the concept of slope-stability analysis, a formula for determining an important parameter required in the mathematical model for the prediction of mining subsidence in hilly terrain is proposed. The slope geometry and the physical and mechanical properties of the soil at the surface of the natural slope can all be considered in the formula. Incorporation of this new formula into an existing mathematical model provides an integrated approach for the study of ground movement in hilly regions.

A new pillar strength formula is presented. It incorporates a function [IF] of size and shape that takes into account the size-shape interaction effect as well as the enhanced strength exhibited by wide pillars. Existing pillar formulas, lacking these capabilities, are not suitable for extrapolating small-specimen test results to mine-pillar sizes and shapes. Interpreting compressive strength test results as function of [Y] reveals wide-pillar behavior in much old test data. Model relationships are discussed, along with their scaling implications.

The hydrometallurgical treatment of gold and silver ores by ammoniacal thiosulfate solutions in the presence of a copper catalyst has been actively studied in recent years. Such a process strategy is very attractive due to the low toxicity of the lixiviant and the efficient recovery of the precious metals from difficult-to-treat ores. Important features of the ammoniacal thiosulfate system for the recovery of precious metals from various sources are reviewed in this paper, including leaching, metal recovery, and system stability.

This study examines the problems involved with the control of characteristics of the products resulting from comminution operations. A methodology of investigation based on texture analysis procedures by image processing techniques of the comminution product is proposed. Some examples of applications are considered with particular reference to comminution products of different textural, structural and mechanical characteristics. The advantages and the limites of this method of approach are, indicated, both as regards performance of the investigations and subsequent processing of results.

Mineral processors have evolved from "handbook-based" decision makers to "model-based" decision makers. With this evolution have come significant improvements through increasing productivity, decreasing capital and operating costs and increasing product quality. This paper traces the development of model-based decision-making technology over the last 40 years and documents the benefits resulting from systems optimization using these tools. Some speculation is ventured concerning the future of model-based decision-making tools and their use in the field of mineral processing.

The legislation that prohibits the recirculation of air in coal mines was formulated because of the fear that concentrations of airborne pollutants would rise to dangerous levels. This paper undertakes a simple analysis of the effects of a controlled recirculation system on the gas concentrations in headings. It is shown, through an algebraic formulation and a numerical example, that a properly planned system of controlled recirculation leads to a reduction in the maximum general body gas concentration that occurs in a heading.

A versatile acid leach process has been developed which is applicable to a broad range of oxide nickel ores. Inherent in this process are high recoveries of nickel and cobalt, as well as a relatively low energy consumption. These features extend the range of economic exploitation of laterite deposits to low grade limonites and to garnieritic ores not suitable for pyrometallurgical processing. Particular advantages can be realized in treating orebodies containing both limonite and garnierite and ores containing significant amounts of cobalt.

The current study is concerned with the analysis and attempt at simulating the product size distributions obtained from a vibrating ultrasonic device. Systematic experiments of comminution were performed with natural sizes as well as monosizes in order to understand the breakage behavior of the device. A precise analysis of the device's breakage performance in the case of fine grinding of alumina samples will be presented. Initial steps to model the breakage events using a detailed mathematical algorithm will be discussed.

In recent years, heavy mining applications have put an increasing demand on conveyor pulleys. This has resulted in the increased usage of turbine pulleys. The designs of these pulleys are often based upon the failures seen in the conventional welded designs, overlooking the interaction of pulley-shaft system components as the profile of the disc is modified. This paper will focus on the development of balanced design philosophy using case studies of turbine pulleys in heavy mining applications, evaluated with FEA.

It is well known that weak floor conditions in central Illinois affect pillar and mine opening stability. The floor interaction with coal pillars and immediate mine roof are being studied using two dimensional (plane-strain) elastic-plastic finite element models. The effects of varying soft floor thickness, coal seam- thickness, width of mine openings and strength parameters of coal and mine floor are being evaluated. The finite element models developed by Agbabian Associates and Dahl were utilized in this study.

Although fraught with problems of completeness and comparability, statistical measures of mineral exploration in the United States point downward for 1985 and 1986. Exploration expenditures in the US domestic and Canadian companies have dropped steadily from a 1981 peak of about $400 million to about $190 million in 1985, according to a recent survey of exploration statistics by the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG). These totals have been adjusted to account for differences in the estimated coverage of exploration activity by each year's SEG survey. This survey is now supported by the US Bureau of Mines and the US Geological Survey (USGS). The drop in current dollar amounts does not take into account the effects of inflation, which would make the decline even more substantial. Metals Economics Group of Boulder, CO reported in its Mine Development Bimonthly that announced exploration budgets for 1986 indicated an even larger drop for the past year. Worldwide expenditures for companies covered by the report dropped from about $800 million to $750 million from 1984 to 1985 and plummeted to about $600 million in 1986. Exploration activity has been declining since about 1981. This has been due in large part to low prices for base and ferrous metals. Exploration budgets of mining subsidiaries of oil companies have plunged as parent companies try to conserve cash in the face of the sharpest decline in oil prices in nearly 40 years. Mining subsidiaries of petroleum firms that were either liquidated or divested recently include Anaconda (Arco), Getty Mining (Texaco), and Cyprus Minerals (Amoco). Exploration expenditures in Canada increased in 1984 in regions where gold is a traditional target. But there was little change in 1985, based on preliminary statistics from a federal government report (Energy, Mines and Resources Mineral Bulletin MR 211, 1986). Claim staking in Canada dropped 23% from 1983 to 1984 and declined slightly in 1985. Diamond drilling increased in 1984 to the record levels of 1980 and 1981. The ratio of exploration to development expenditures in Canada, however, fell from a 1981 peak of 0.9 to about 0.5 in 1984. The report also indicated that, since 1981, there has been a massive write-off of reserves with high production costs. Reserve levels of all major metals were down since 1981. Precious metals exploration accounts for an increasing share of total mineral exploration. For example, the SEG data show that 90% of 1985 US exploration expenses by domestic mining companies were devoted to base and precious metals, compared with only 51% in 1980. The restructuring of the mining industry has been accompanied by a decrease in response to the last two SEG annual surveys, but the trend towards precious metals was already established in earlier years. Trade journal reports suggest that the reduction of long-term interest rates has encouraged the mining industry to make cost-reducing capital investments in existing mines to maintain competitiveness. This is consistent with the observations that metals explorations in 1986 was characterized not by announcements of "grassroots" discoveries, but by on-property exploration on identified mines or prospects. In an effort to cut costs, gold mining companies have been following up on low cost production opportunities in their prospect inventories. Short-term, low risk, heap leach operations that can produce rapid returns on investment have been pursued. Marbles commercially known as the Nigde- white crop out in the town of Gümü?ler, around the Çalkama Hill within the Gümü?ler Formation of the Nigde Masif of Paleozoic age. Marbles sporadically occur within the masif, however its prevalent occurrence is associated with the Gümü?ler Formation. Due mainly to its intense fractured nature, the Nigde-white marbles are used as dimension stones, crushed stones and most recently micronized calcite. Insignificant portion accounts for block use through a few quarries.

Based on standard population balance models for agglomeration and size reduction processes, a simplified model has been developed to describe simultaneous growth and breakage in the flocculation of agitated suspensions. The results of semi-batch flocculation tests have been used for estimation of the model parameters and empirical relationships have been obtained to describe the effects of process variables and to establish scale-up criteria. Application of the model to the design, operation and control of continuous flocculation processes is discussed.

A comprehensive model has been set up for surface mine long range planning. It is a system simulation model based on the oriented graph theory. Via this model, a series of mining results such as mineral and waste volume, mineral quality, mining intensity, material haulage distances, dumping area parameters and mining coat for different mining alternatives, can be derived and optimized. This model has been applied to 37 mining alternatives in several surface coal mines and proved mathematically correct and results reliable.

Discrete event simulation modeling provides a tool to quantify the throughput capacity of stockyards. Interactions between the main equipment types (trains, dumpers, conveyors, stackers, reclaimers, shiploaders) can be captured, including route blockages, breakdowns, and planned maintenance. Simulation has been successfully used at world-class stockyard facilities to determine current capacity and to identify gains resulting from improvement projects. Recent projects have focused on iron-ore, coal, and soya facilities, but the technology is suitable to be used on any bulk material type.

Quimica del Rey, SA, a subsidiary of Industrias Peñoles, SA de CV, produces sodium sulfate from brines extracted from a playa of Laguna del Rey, located in the State of Coahuila in northern Mexico. The spent brine is used as raw material for the production of magnesium oxide. The brine, which contains ions of sodium, magnesium, sulfate, and chlorine, occurs filling intercrystalline voids of a lenticular evaporite deposit whose main constituents are glauberite (sodium-calcium sulfate) and blöedite (sodium-magnesium sulfate).

It is the purpose of this paper to review the development of this system, describe the setting in which it functions and to mention some of the future developments and enhancements. Discussion of the evolution of the system in a historical perspective helps to understand its present status and illuminate some thinking about future directions of development.

A numerical model is being developed to assess the enhancement of ore permeability by improving fracture connectivity with micro-hydrofracturing. As part of this project, a generic two-dimensional percolation model was developed to test the impact of various field conditions on permeability. Field data from Cyprus Minerals' Mineral Park mine was used to establish the statistical properties of the observed fracture systems. Introduction Minicomputers have been gaining acceptance in mining. Low cost interactive processing and plotting can now be controlled by geologists or engineers needing rapid solutions and specialized mining software in formats that allow noncomputer personnel to readily interact with computer processes. User-oriented programs maximize the use of interactive display features and graphics, as shown by the HP9845 minicomputer, a unit with portability, processing power, graphics capabilities, capacity, and peripherals such as plotters, digitizers, disk drives, and printers. Application Coal exploration projects require that much effort be spent determining coal volumes within trial pit limits. This determines a prospect's viability and potential. Adapting volume calculations to a computer has been limited, since it was difficult to create reasonable representations of complex coal seam geometry with a digital process. So many of the simple mechanical procedures needed to produce pit reserves are still performed manually by geologists and engineers. But with new minicomputers and their interactive graphics, it is now practical to accurately model complex structures without tedious calculations. GEOSEM (Geomin Seam Oriented Exploration System) is a computer system designed to analyze coal prospects. The system shows how a coal prospect, with complex geology, can be quickly analyzed, modeled, displayed, and evaluated for mineable reserves. Its interactive graphics allow rapid visual presentation of data, high-speed tabular reports, and precision plotting. The system is most effective when used by a geologist or engineer who selects the required operations and specifies relevant parameters via screen and keyboard interaction. Rolling Hills The Rolling Hills prospect represents a typical Rocky Mountain coal deposit. Enough geological interpretation has been done to show a complex system of block faulting with coal seams following synclines of stratified lithologies. With the completion of initial drill hole exploration, questions arose concerning coal volumes and strip ratios involved with various pit limits. Quality information had been gathered on the coal intercepts. It was decided that coal vol¬umes and pit designs were of prime importance. The objective was to enter and display data, create a computer model based on interpretation, develop pit designs, compute seam/ waste volumes, and report various contents. The project, begun by entering data in the GEOSEM system, was completed in several days. Data Entry For modeling, the prime information was seam identity and drill hole intercept. Other information-rock type, Btu rating, and percent of ash, sulfur, and moisture-was also available. It, too, was entered into the data base through the computer keyboard and then reported, verified, and corrected. Various reports can be produced, according to user specified sort parameters. For example, from an analysis of available data, only 14 intercepts could be found with Btu value greater than 8000 and sulfur content less than 0.4%. The sort option can also be used prior to entry into the analysis routines. Data Analysis Though the objective was to create a seam model and compute reserves, it became necessary to project quality information into unsampled areas. Statistical analysis was then war-ranted. A typical analysis correlated the lack of relationship between percentage of ash and Btu. Although histograms were also produced, these typified a lack of samples and "ragged" distributions. A geostatistical analysis was also applied, showing the results of computing a 2-D variogram on the largest coal seam. Results showed an average range of 18 m, with a poorly defined variogram. Data Display and Drafting Scaled plans and sections were required so seam locations could be compared to hand drawn interpretations and drill coordinates verified. At the same time, topography could be interpolated from collar elevations to determine whether surface control points were needed for better definition. In addition, a new set of 50 final-scale drawings were required, showing new drilling information. By using the computer screen as a "scratch pad" device, various sections were displayed and then plotted on a drum plotter at the desired scale for overlay on original sections.
