ACTIRED is a new process for gold and silver elution from activated carbon based on the addition of hydrazine, needing no extra investment and which generates a systematic increase in elutions kinetics. This process either operates at a lower temperature and maximizes financial gain or reduces elution time or operates at a compromise between these two options taking into account the needs of each plant. Industrial use of the process at SNC Lastours, France (Zadra elution column 3,5 bars -125°C) has proved at 95 ° C the following points:

Dunn has written an excellent paper providing a wealth of advice on what is often the most costly consumable in the mineral processing plant. As he pointed out, grinding media selection and quality control can play a major role in successful plant operation. Owing to the economic importance of this topic, there are some important factors related to media sizing that I believe merit further comment. Dunn made reference to a slightly simplified version of the Azzaroni (1981) equation and pointed out its successful use for the Henderson SAG and Climax ball mills.

Heavy medium cyclones (HMCs) are commonly used to clean run-of-mine coal in the 50 x 0.5 mm size range. Unfortunately, field studies suggest that industrial HMC circuits are often poorly designed or improperly operated, resulting in significant losses of recoverable clean coal. To assist plant engineers in overcoming these problems, a spreadsheet-based simulation package has been developed to predict HMC performance based on mathematical expressions originally developed by Wood (1990). A case study is provided to illustrate the predictive capabilities of this simulation package for an industrial HMC.

INTRODUCTION The principal OSHA standards dealing with tunneling activities are found in 29 CFR Part 1926. A reference for the applicable subparts which apply to tunneling is included as Appendix A. In addition, some standards from 29 CFR Part 1910 have been identified as applicable to construction and are included in the recent printing of an interim vertical standard for construction (1910/1926 Project). The remainder of this presentation will be focused on past OSHA activities to revise Subpart S of 1926, the principal subpart dealing with tunnel construction.

This paper treats some aspects of the research completed on the impact of the waste generated in the production process of a chemical fertilizer, phosphogypsum, on crops and yields. The article starts with the basic data and the research methods, and continues with details about the research results on the heap waste of phosphogypsum and the soil from its vicinity along with the content in radioactive elements, humus, macro elements and mobile forms of heavy metals. Finally, the absorbtion of radioactive elements from the soil and the uranium concentration in the agricultural cultivations is presented.

Heap leach pad liners are important to leach operations for maximizing recovery of gold bearing solutions and minimizing potential environmental impacts. Liners must be designed so that they can be built economically, but careful attention must be paid to the potential for liner damage during installation or placement of ore on the completed pads. This paper summarizes field experience gained on several leach pad construction projects in Nevada. Both soil and synthetic membrane installations are discussed. Emphasis is placed on principles that should be considered during design to provide economical and practical leach pads.

The problem of measuring the amount of rock removed during a given time interval is faced by most mining operations. Many methods have been developed with varying degrees of success, dependent upon the mining method and the availability of usable data. The Rosebud Mine has been in production for nearly two years, employing several techniques to estimate monthly production from underground production stopes. The use of three-dimensional solids generated from survey data has greatly improved the reliability and confidence of monthly production reports. The authors will summarize the methodology currently being utilized at Rosebud.

The Norwegian contracting firm A/S Høyer-Ellefsen has for the last 2.5 years carried out substantial pregrouting in a 7600m long tunnel just outside the city of Oslo. This has been done to avoid groundwater lowering and consequent damage to surface structures. A WIRTH TBM is used in combination with a 2 boom Atlas Copco hydraulic jumbo for the drilling of groutholes in front of the machine. The detailed procedure for the drilling and grouting will be discussed, and the results obtained will be presented.

Two types of failure have to be considered in designing large openings: (a) Structurally controlled failure caused by discontinuity intersections, (b) Stress induced instability which occurs when induced stresses exceed the rock mass strength. Structurally controlled failures, which occur in hard jointed rock masses at relatively shallow depth, are briefly reviewed. This paper is primarily concerned with stress induced instability at greater depths and with the problem of estimating the strength of a rock mass surrounding an underground opening. Some of the practical aspects of support design for large openings are discussed.

Risks in underground construction are often viewed as technical in nature; "running ground, " "squeezing ground" and "chimneys" are terms that appear in construction managers' nightmares, and occasionally in their underground projects. Financial consequences of these and other project risks are reviewed. Special attention is paid to sources of cost overruns. From this study a structure evolves for setting priorities for risk management actions; these actions can also be tested for impact and potential effectiveness. Finally, case study reviews of six underground projects indicate the "state of the practice" for financial risk management.

The Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is a partnership of Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corp. Since the summer of 1990, SMC has operated a precious metals smelter at Columbus, MT for further upgrading of concentrates from its platinum-palladium mine. The facility's gas-cleaning system utilizes "oxidation/dilute-mode," dual-alkali scrubbing technology to capture sulfur oxide gases from the process gas streams. This paper describes the rationale for selecting the dilute-mode, dual-alkali system and summarizes the design parameters. Also discussed are the startup problems encountered and their solutions.

Unlined water tunnels have often been used as pressure conduits for hydroelectric projects. However, fallouts of rock in such tunnels are not uncommon and in many cases have been attributed to erosion of shears and seams. A case history of such a fallout is described. An appraisal of the conditions pertaining to the fallout led to the conclusion that rapid changes in the water pressure in the tunnel resulting from operating conditions were significant factors in initiating the fallout. Other factors that contributed to the fallout are also described.

The thermal field of a frozen rockmass surrounding an airway is often disturbed due to thermal interaction with mine ventilation air. Outside air entering an underground mine changes the parameters of the physical state of the surrounding medium. The variations in air temperature result in stress redistributions around a tunnel or mine working. This paper examines the influence of fluctuations in air temperature on stress distribution around an airway, and approaches are suggested to minimize the impact of temperature- stress on the stability of mine openings in far northern mines.

Jamaica has extensive deposits of marble, gypsum, and limestone, offering prospects for commercial sales to nearby US markets, notably the Gulf Coast and Southeast. Stare-owned and private Jamaican industrial minerals producers have made limited sales to date but expect to increase exports during the balance of the 1980s. Restraints include Jamaican government controls on access to essential foreign exchange for new capital investments and distribution of profits. Jamaican efforts to identify market opportunities in the US are reviewed, and the outlook for further exports of carbonates is discussed.

With the goal of improving the strength characteristics of pneumatically emplaced material used for localized subsidence control, the binding additives fly ash, bentonite, and portland cement were examined for their effect on the support capabilities of coal refuse. It was found that, within certain concentration ranges, all three offered some increase in the ultimate strength of the backfilling mixture. However, portland cement gave the greatest percentage increases. Selection of the appropriate backfilling mixture will allow for the most economical and efficient subsidence control when pneumatic stowing is employed.

The step-by-step study of the Stronsay ores follows the testwork through the initial determination of Bond Rod and Ball mill work indices, the MacPherson Autogenous work indices and the production of a preliminary flowsheet. These results are then used to design a pilot plant program to test the effectiveness of fully autogenous primary and secondary grinding and to determine the feasibility of controlling feed rate by the use of variable speed mill drive and/or varying the mill load. A final flowsheet is recommended with mill sizes and power requirements.

Solid-bowl (decanter) centrifuges are used extensively to dewater slurries in a wide range of industries. However, the application of decanters as classification devices is not as common. In this study, the performance of a continuous, pilot-scale, solid-bowl centrifuge was evaluated when classifying an ultrafine coal slurry containing nearly 60% material less than 10 µm. The test conditions included centrifuge howl and scroll speeds, volumetric feed rate, solids concentration and pond depth. Centrifuge performance was evaluated using size selectivity curves and the corresponding performance parameters, along with product yields and solids concentrations.

The genetic characteristics of members of the genus Acidiphilium are poorly understood. As part of our study of the genetics of these bacteria, a search was made for an endogenous bacteriophage. Such a bacteriophage has been discovered. Several properties of the phage have been investigated. The phage has a lambdoid morphology and is somewhat larger than lambda. A variety of factors which affect phage stability have been investigated. The bacteriophage infects several of the strains that have been tested. Study of this bacteriophage should greatly increase our understanding of genetic mechanisms in Acidiphilium.

The paper discusses coal utilisation in Sweden. All hard coals have to be imported from other countries. Peat from domestic sources is used as a complement. Environmental legislation and taxation on fuel and emissions are severe. This situation affects the procurement, preparation, handling and use of coal. It is possible to beneficiate low-grade phosphate ore slimes containing predominantly siliceous gangue by a combined selective flocculation-flotation scheme using commercially available reagents. The presence of clays, in particular, montmorillonite and attapulgite, has a disastrous effect on the efficiency of separation. Suitable remedies to overcome this problem are not yet available. Intensive R&D efforts are required in the areas of the design and synthesis of specific reagents, the effect of particle size, and the design of appropriate process equipment to carry out flocculation and flotation of slimes.
