Start with your assessment of the minerals business —domestic mining as well as operational and consulting perspectives. As a third generation miner, I have been living the mining business for as long as I can remember. I have watched commodity prices produce boom and bust cycles in places like Price, Utah (coal), Douglas, Arizona (copper) and Eureka, Nevada (gold). It is unsettling to see how our industry has fluctuated, but it always seems to rebound if you can stick out the down cycles. However, our most recent dip in the cycle was, in my opinion, characteristically and permanently different. In the past, when prices went south, people hunkered down and waited out the cycle until things came back, much the same as they had every other time. Not this time. This time, we saw a consolidation of the industry in proportions never seen before. Mega-mergers like Exxon-Mobil, Phelps Dodge-Cyprus and Newmont-Normandy have changed the complexion of our industry forever. And that is true not just of the mining companies; it happened across the supporting business lines as well. As a midsized niche engineering and environmental service provider to the mining industry, companies like mine are few and far between these days. The lean cycle saw many of the small and midsized providers get gobbled up by consulting giants like URS and TetraTech. The mentality of a mega-company, whether a commodity producer or a goods or service provider, is different than that of their small- and medium-sized counterparts.

Growing Greener is the single largest investment of state funds in Pennsylvania’s history, allocated to address the Commonwealth’s critical environmental concerns. Signed into law by Governor Tom Ridge on December 15, 1999, Growing Greener will enable the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to appropriate nearly $240 million over five years, to watershed restoration and protection, abandoned mine reclamation, and oil and gas well plugging projects. DEP has utilized these allocations in some remarkably innovative ways, as it: involves the cooperation of several state agencies, local governments, and grassroots organizations to address environmental concerns of the Commonwealth, provides funds directly to watershed groups based on locally determined decisions for local watersheds and offers a user friendly process. In three years, over $130 million in watershed restoration and improvement projects have been initiated.

High-fidelity, immersive training is known for its learning and logistical benefits. While other industries have used virtual reality (VR) for decades, the same uptake has not been seen in mining. NIOSH recently developed an adaptable, scalable VR training platform, VR Mine Rescue Training (VR-MRT), which has attracted significant industry interest. NIOSH is using VR-MRT to understand the barriers to adoption and implementation of VR. As a part of a larger effort to assess the effectiveness and implementation of VR-MRT, researchers have conducted pre-implementation interviews. In this paper, the authors use feedback from individuals at various implementation levels to assess the acceptability and appropriateness of VR-MRT and identify potential implementation barriers for VR more generally. Researchers also describe ongoing efforts to overcome these barriers as NIOSH works to position VR-MRT as a supplemental resource more generally for mine safety training.

Soil erosion is strongly related to soil hydraulic properties. Understanding how surface coal mining impacts those properties is important in developing effective management practices to control erosion during reclamation. Soils from undisturbed areas, roughly graded mine spoil, replaced topsoil before seeding, and revegetated areas at the Rosebud Mine in Eastern Montana were evaluated to determine impacts on soil hydraulic properties. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to determine soil hydraulic properties, including particle-size distribution, organic matter content, and saturated hydraulic conductivity. WEPP simulations and risk analyses were performed on the soil hydraulic property data to determine the impacts of changes on soil erosion. The hydraulic properties of the soils in each representative area have significant differences due to the mining and reclamation practices at the mine. WEPP simulations show that the potential for soil erosion increases due to mining activities disturbing the soil. WEPP simulations also indicate that the potential for erosion may return to pre-mining levels over time with effective revegetation practices.

Este artículo analiza la nueva producción de cobre a partir de "minerales de desecho" de baja ley usando la tecnología de Blue Planet Strategies DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrode Mining Effluent Treatment, por sus siglas en inglés), que tiene como objetivo salvar la brecha de procesamiento entre la solución débil de lixiviación en operaciones de extracción por solventes/electrowinning (SX/EW), removiendo electroquímicamente los metales a partir de corrientes débiles y a la vez generando productos concentrados en metales objetivo en un análogo funcional de extracción por solventes (SX). Se estudió el tratamiento de la débil solución de lixiviación pregnant (PLS por sus siglas en inglés) y se usó para estimar los impactos económicos y de producción para una hipotética lixiviación en pilas de cobre brownfield y una operación aumentada DEMET usando SX/EW para tratar el "mineral de desecho." Se presenta la remoción de cobre a un 86% de eficiencia en las placas por debajo de 0,1 g/L de cobre con un consumo de energía de 0.55 kWh/lb de cobre y una concentración del producto mayor a 10 g Cu/L. El modelamiento arrojó aproximadamente $2/ lb para la producción total de cobre y costos de tratamiento menores o iguales a $1/lb con un inmediato aumento del margen bruto de operación del 12% para el brownfield incrementado. Se indicó también un aumento de la vida de la mina con un margen bruto promedio de 38% en la producción aumentada de "mineral de desecho" con valores de cobre de $3.25/lb.

When modeling predictive pit lake chemistry, groundwater chemistry is integrated with the affected portions of the wall rock and chemistry of the lake in a complex series of mixing. Fractions of the solutions impinge upon fresh, unaltered or fractured and oxidized zones of the wall containing sulfide materials and/or soluble metal/metalloid salts. Changing conditions over the short term (biannually) and long term (decades) can drive reactions allowing for dissolution or precipitation of acid rock drainage and metal leaching (ARD/ML) constituents. Local zonal variations can result in a portion of the pit releasing materials into solution; whereas other portions of the lake might favor the formation of colloids or precipitants. The proportions and character of groundwater can drive the chemistry of the pit lake provided sufficient buffering capacity is available to temper the generation of ARD in the system. For sulfide-rich systems, reduction of oxygen by rapid inundation and consumption by sulfides is key to reducing the ARD/ML. This paper presents several models of a sulfide-rich wall rock system using a range of groundwater chemistries to show these constraints.

Introduction The Cove gold-silver deposit is located in Lander County, NV about 50 km (30 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit is in the north-central part of the Fish Creek Mountains within the McCoy mining district. Gold was first discovered in the McCoy district in 1914 by Joseph H. McCoy (Vanderburg, 1939). From 1928 to the early 1930s, minor production occurred from shallow underground workings. Total gold production was less than 311 kg (10,000 oz; Stager, 1977). The district was inactive until the mid-1960s when it was explored by Bear Creek Mining, Summa Corp., Houston Oil and Minerals Corp., Gold Fields, and Tenneco Minerals. Tenneco began a detailed reevaluation of the McCoy deposit in the fall of 1984. Tenneco's decision to place the deposit into production was based on a geological reserve of 8.7 t (280,000 oz) of gold (Kuyper, 1987). Subsequent exploration and development drilling of the McCoy skarn deposit has more than doubled the mineable skarn reserves to 19 t (615,000 oz) of gold. In September 1985, Tenneco began development work on the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The project is an open-pit, heap leach mine. The first gold was poured in April 1986. Echo Bay Mines acquired Tenneco's precious metals properties in October 1986. The mining operation and district exploration started by Tenneco is continuing under the Echo Bay's ownership. The Cove deposit was discovered in January 1987 and production began in February 1988. The deposit will begin as an open-pit, heap leach operation. It will be converted into an open-pit and underground mine with a 9-kt (10,000-stpd) mill. Geologic setting The Cove gold-silver deposit is situated on the east flank of the Fish Creek Range. Surface elevations range from 1460 to 1680 m (4800 to 5500 ft). The deposit is 1.6 km (1 mile) northeast of the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The Cove deposit is hosted by the Augusta Sequence of Triassic age. Three formations of the sequence are mineralized at the Cove. In ascending order they are the Favret, Panther Canyon, and Augusta Mountain formations. The Favret formation is a gray, locally silty limestone that is commonly fossiliferous. The base of the formation is not exposed. Exposed and drilled intervals are more than 60 m (200 ft) thick. Conformably overlying the Favret formation is the Panther Canyon formation. This formation is 215 m (700 ft) thick and consists of a siliclastic and carbonate sequence of conglomerate, quartzite (sandstone), mudstone, limestone, and dolomite. The reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In such a process quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?O(CH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of hematite does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the flotation efficiency of iron ore flotation by use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, i.e., GP clay binder. It is postulated that the GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It is further theorized that the clay binder helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating ability to iron ion. The results from this study clearly show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing concentrate grade to 67.08% and iron recovery to 78.15% simultaneously. One of the most common errors uncovered while performing a reserve, or resource, audit is not in the geological modeling or grade problems due to poor sampling, prepartion or assaying. The error most commonly found is in tonnage or, more specifically, in the tonnage factor - that factor applied to volume to derive tonnage. Tonnage factors In the metric system, the tonnage factor is the density, or specific gravity. Specific gravity (Sp.g.) is defined by Dana (1947): • "The specific gravity of a mineral is the ratio of its density to that of water at 4° C (39.2° F). • "Density is the mass of the unit volume or weight of the body divided by the weight of an equal volume of water." When Sp.g. is multiplied by the metric volume it yields metric tonnes. In the English system, the tonnage factor is usually expressed in cubic feet per short ton (cu ft/st). When the volume in cubic feet is divided by cu ft/st, the resulting figure is in English short tons. Table 1 gives the cu ft/st factors equivalent to specific gravities from 1.6 Sp.g. to 5.8 Sp.g. The table is based on the following equation: cu ft/st = 0.9072 divided by Sp.g. times 0.02832 The blase attitude that most geologists have toward tonnage factors is echoed in the prevailing definitions of Reserves and Ore, as provided by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (S.C Form S-18), Canadian National Policy 2A and the SME Proposal for Reporting Terminology (SME February 1991). In each case, it is stated that "quantity" (SEC, SME), or "tonnage" (Can.2A), "is computed from dimensions revealed in...." etc. Unfortunately, "dimensions" do not directly yield tonnage. Dimensions must be factored by density to derive tonnage.

Shovel excavation constitutes a significant component of production costs in any surface mining operation. This makes shovel loading an important cost center that needs to be improved to lower production costs. Optimization of tool design will improve energy efficiency in earthmoving operations. However, modeling the soil-tool interaction is a complex process due to the fact that forces for excavating particulate material are functions of many variables. The magnitude of this resisting force depends not only on the type of soil but on the size, shape and orientation of the cutting element. Moreover, part of this complexity is attributed to the fact that the behavior of the material during excavation is not yet well understood. For the past five decades, researchers have mostly used the passive earth pressure theory to study the soil failure patterns around a cutting tool and to develop force prediction models for design optimization with some success. Although the force models developed from the passive pressure theory have been successful to some extent, they can hardly be extended to a general case because of the underlying assumptions and simplification of tool shapes. This paper aims at reviewing some of the existing empirical and analytical methods of cutting and excavation tool modeling with a focus on their merits and limitations. The paper also explores the use of numerical methods, specifically the discrete element method, for dealing with the unresolved aspects of soil dynamics in excavation.

There was a time when heavy-duty apron feeders were built to last almost forever. The machines were heavy and built to maintain certain expected longevity and reliability. Increasing emphasis on return on capital leads to cost-effective designs. Costs can be increased or decreased, depending on customer specifications and the design philosophy of the feeder manufacturer. Specifiers can make important contributions to cost effectiveness. To do so, this article describes what should be known about planning with a supplier for heavy-duty apron feeders. There are several factors that should be considered, including capacity, characteristics of material carried, length, method of feeder loading, degree of lift, hopper opening, pan construction, and type of drive. Today's apron feeders are built in various sizes and with a variety of components to handle heavy, lumpy, or abrasive materials that can ruin lighter feeders. Careful feeder selection is important if it is to provide a controlled feed rate, absorb huge impacts, be used with long hopper openings, and have a relatively low power-perton capacity. Variations in systems and materials demand that each feeder be designed for its application, drawing on a wide range of components. Therefore, certain factors must be considered before final specifications are drawn. Capacity The design and application of an apron feeder is based on how material passes through a given system over the feeder into processing machinery. The processing machinery's capacity governs other equipment and productivity of the flow. From this basic information, related sizes of upstream equipment can be determined. Of these, the apron feeder acts as the "mouth and neck of the bottle." No more will pass than the mouth and neck will accommodate. Everything in the apron feeder design, from dimensions to power, is based on processing machinery. Material Considerations Are Vital Just as the nature of materials to be crushed or screened affects capacity and productivity of a crusher or a grinding mill, so does it affect capacity and performance of a feeder. Lump size must be identified closely so the pan width can be selected to accommodate the maximum lump with room to spare. Although rates of pneumoconiosis in coal miners have declined substantially in the United States since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, new cases continue to occur, including cases of rapidly progressive disease. In contrast, Australia?s underground coal mining industry has reported few new cases of pneumoconiosis for over twenty years. Mortality from Coal Workers? Pneumoconiosis in official health statistics and the prevalence of pneumoconiosis among miners screened in x-ray surveillance programs are also lower in Australia. To understand this disparity, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health was requested by both industry and labor stakeholders to examine this issue, with the ultimate aim of reducing the rate of pneumoconiosis among United States coal miners. A number of factors, including coal dust exposure, silica exposure, and coal rank were examined as potential contributors to the above observed differences. Comparison of coal rank data from each country did not show any significant differences. Air sample data from the coal mining industries in both countries show that coal dust levels in Australian mines are somewhat higher than those reported in similar U.S. mines; however, quartz exposure for Australian miners is lower than for many U.S. miners. Assuming that quartz is contributing to the greater number of cases of advanced pneumoconiosis in the U.S., more effective dust control measures, as well an independent exposure standard for respirable quartz in coal mining, need to be implemented to prevent this potentially disabling condition.

Comminution is an important unit operation of mineral processing in terms of large tonnage of materials processed, huge energy consumption, and high capital and operating costs. Substantial research efforts have been directed towards the development of process-engineering tools including mathematical models, process scale-up procedures and computer simulation packages (Austin et al., 1984; Rajamani and Herbst, 1990; Kawatra, 1992). The simulation systems are found to provide significant cost savings by enabling efficient circuit design and development of control systems. Most of these simulators are built from scratch, do not make use of software modules from other sources and are designed with minimal usage of formal software methodologies.

Yield pillar-based gate road designs oftentimes fail to provide mine operators with adequate ground control because of the unknowing misemployment of "critically" sized pillars. A "critical" pillar is one that is too large to either yield nonviolently or yield before the roof and floor sustain permanent damage, but is too small to support full abutment loads. To demonstrate the critical pillar concept, a field study of a tapering gate road was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Sunnyside Coal Mines, Sunnyside, UT. Extreme pillar stresses and associated coal bumps characterize the response to first panel mining of a 16.8-m wide critical design. Significantly lower pillar stresses, early yielding of the pillar and adjacent panel rib, and an absence of coal bumps suggest that a narrower 12.2-m-wide design more closely approaches proper yield pillar dimensions. Probehole drilling of several 1 O.6-m-wide pillars revealed low stress levels and substantial pillar and panel rib yielding prior to abutment onset, indicating a properly functioning yield pillar design.

The development of mechanical flotation cells has resulted in larger and better cells. This has led to flotation banks with only a few units, even in large-scale operations. This equipment development makes the old operational considerations ineffective. The flotation cell must be considered as a single reactor unit capable of handling specific tasks and getting excellent metallurgical performance. The result of the unit reactor concept development was the new large TankCell that comes in sizes up to 113 m3 (4,000 cu ft). The TankCell construction includes new modified rotor-stator designs, new tank geometries and a froth-handling capability independent from subprocesses taking place in the pulp (i.e., air addition). The conventional idea of a single flotation cell type for fine, intermediate and coarse materials does not give optimal results. Optimal flotation of coarse and fine particles needs different mechanism designs, impeller tip speeds and different froth control objectives.

Vision 21 is a government/industry/academia cost-shared partnership to develop the technology basis for integrated energy plants that will, early in the 21stcentury, result in the deployment of ultra-clean plants that produce electricity and “opportunity” products. Vision 21 plants will use fossil fuel feed-stocks in combination with other domestic resources, e.g., biomass, municipal waste, and petroleum coke. Opportunity products could include transportation fuels, steam, high-value chemicals, synthesis gas, and hydrogen. Performance targets for Vision 21 plants, example plant configurations, and the key technologies that will be needed are described.

Developers of advanced mining projects face the challenge of how to craft a “Request for Proposal for a Feasibility Study” that will result in bids that are comparable and will lead to a successful execution of the study. Mining engineering consulting firms are challenged by “Request for Proposals” that may consist of a limited description of the Scope of Services and other items, which could present difficulties in the subsequent financing and/or development of the project. Changes in international disclosure requirements have also changed the landscape on how resources and reserves are reported by introducing new disclosure requirements and concepts such as qualified persons. This paper lays out a strategy for preparing a Feasibility Study “Request for Proposal” based on the experiences of a mining engineering consulting firm working on a diversity of projects around the world, and in light of the recent changes in international reporting standards for reserves.

No major changes took place in the salt industry during 2004. No new uses of salt appeared and only localized supply disruptions occurred. Many salt producers reported slightly increased salt sales and profits for the year. In the United States, about half of the salt supply is produced as brine, by solution mining, and is used by the chemicals industry. One-third of U.S. salt is produced as rock salt by 14 underground mines. The remaining two production techniques, each with less than 10 percent of the total tonnage, are vacuum-pan-evaporation for refined, food-grade salt, and solar pond crystallized salt.

In situ stresses are one of the key inputs to a successful underground excavation design. Because of the complex mechanisms involved in arriving at the current state of stress at a point in the Earth’s crust, often the only reliable way of estimating in situ stresses is by actual measurement. In the United States coal mines, overcoring relief method is by far the most popular technique used for estimating the virgin stress field. Typically, for stress measurement with overcoring, a vertical borehole is drilled into the roof or floor of an underground coal mine opening to a certain distance and change in borehole diameter is monitored at multiple points along the length of the hole when this borehole is overcored. For the measured stresses to represent the pre-mining stress field, the measurement points should be located beyond the influence zone of the mine opening. Actual data from several US coal mines have been collected to check if the measured stresses by overcoring represent true in situ stresses. The data indicate that most of the stress measurements were within the excavation influence zone. A three-dimensional numerical modeling methodology was applied to one of the collected cases to correct the measured stresses for the excavation influence. The modeling approach demonstrated the usefulness of integrating numerical modeling into a stress measurement program to estimate ‘true’ in situ stresses.

Moisture deterioration of clay-rich roof rocks causes high numbers of roof falls in coal mines in humid summer months. Rocks with high moisture content are generally weaker and can further deteriorate when subjected to wetting and drying cycles. As a result, it is important to evaluate the moisture-sensitivity of roof rock prior to mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated three moisture-sensitivity index tests on roof rocks from 23 U.S. coal mines. The three tests were the University of Kentucky Weatherability test (Weatherability test), the Consol Energy Water Sensitivity test (Water Sensitivity test), and the NIOSH Immersion test (Immersion test). Of these three tests, the Weatherability and Water Sensitivity tests are more reliable in classifying the moisture-sensitivity of roof rocks.
