Separation of geochemical anomalies from the background using various methods for identifying areas of higher mineral potential is a critical first step in Greenfield and Brownfield programs. There are several methods for differentiating anomalous regions from the background. The U-spatial statistics is an effective technique that provides the opportunity of reaching this goal by considering the geochemical sample locations in the separation of geochemical anomalies. In this study, a developed form of the U-spatial statistics method is introduced, which not only considers the existence of anisotropic spatial variations in input data but also reduces the computational (CPU) time. While the previous method is based on the isotropic assumption in the study area and a set of search windows at different times, here, the geochemical anomaly is determined by pasting only one ellipsoid window, effectively combining the flexibility of the U-spatial statistics method with the advantages of geostatistical approaches. This paper compares various approaches (the previous and developed version of the U-spatial statistics method, concentrationarea (C–A) fractal model, and probability diagram modeling) for the separation of anomalous areas in the presence of heterogeneous spatial variations. This is done with an application to a Baghqloom porphyry copper deposit located in southeastern Iran. The high potential areas identified via different approaches show an anomalous region in central parts of the Baghqloom area, which partially coincides with an intense potassic alteration area. Compared to other methods, our algorithm separated the high potential areas at a greater spatial resolution.

INTRODUCTION General Switzerland is a densely populated country in the heart of Europe. With its total surface of 41.300 km2 and a population of 6,8 million in 1986 the average population density is 163 capita / km2. The population density is lower than in Germany (245 capita/ km2) or the Netherlands (355 capita/km2). The USA have a population density of 26 capita/ km 2. However, sixty percent of the Swiss surface is covered by the Alps and another ten percent by the Jura mountains the remaining thirty percent of the surface is covered by the Swiss plateau where the majority of the population lives. The population in the inhabitated areas is thus substantially higher and may possibly reach those in major metropolitain areas. Due to the high population density in Europe in general and Switzerland in particular future traffic demands cannot be fulfilled sole by car or plane. Environmental and land-use constraints lead to the third option for growing transportation needs: High-speed rail (Bovy, 1990). Switzerland has developed its own approach to promote public transportation and in particular rail transportation: "Rail 2000" (Stalder, 1990). The system "Rail 2000" is based on a series of hubs distributed over Switzerland where easy connections can be made.

"A fire design innovation of the concrete lining of the Ohio River Bridges East End Crossing Tunnel has been developed. As a result from a fire suppression and tunnel ventilation system, the project design Heat Release Rate (HRR) was able to be constrained from 300 MW to about 50 MW. With this reduced HRR, concrete lining without passive fire protection may be acceptable, if the tunnel concrete lining will not result in explosive spalling during the designed fire event. Concrete explosive spalling test was proposed to verify this assumption. Since no standard concrete fire explosive spalling testing procedure exists, a project specific testing procedure was developed and fire tests conducted. From fire test results, it is concluded that the proposed tunnel concrete lining, in conjunction with the proposed fire suppressing and ventilation system, will not experience explosive spalling and does not require a passive fire protection system. INTRODUCTION The Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing Tunnel is part of a Public Private Partnership project, which connects transportation network between Louisville, Kentucky and southern Indiana. Located in Louisville, Kentucky, the twin-tube highway tunnel provides northbound and southbound lanes of the Kentucky approach to a new bridge across the Ohio River. Tunnel lengths are approximately 1,675-ft and 1,685 for the northbound tube and the southbound tube, respectively. Connected by two cross-passages, both tubes have a roadway width of 40-ft, for 3-lane traffic, and a vertical clearance of 26.5-ft.The Tunnel was constructed by drill and blast method with shotcrete and rock dowels as initial ground supports. The final tunnel lining consists of 16 inches cast-in-place concrete lining and 20 inches invert slab, with a waterproofing system around the tunnel perimeter. Two (2) tunnel side drains and one (1) invert drain were provided for each tube. This paper describes the rational in assessing fire design requirements of the tunnel final concrete lining, to answer the question whether a passive fire protection system is needed or not."

Precipitation of hydrous manganese/iron oxides in streams can be readily observed in much of the northeastern United States, and is apparently a common phenomenon in other glaciated areas (1,2,3,4). Deposition occurs when Mn-enriched ground or surface water enters the stream environment and encounters conditions of higher Eh and pH. The preferred location for deposition is in shallow, fast-flowing segments of stream; the oxides usually form as coatings on detrital material. The experimental studies of Hem(5) and a considerable amount of work on marine and lacustrine manganese nodules(6,7,8) suggest that given an appropriate substrate, deposition of manganese oxides may occur even when the water is undersaturated in Mn with respect to the oxides, due to catalysis by organisms or by silicate, carbonate, or ferric hydroxide surfaces. Once begun, manganese oxide deposition is autocatalytic (9). Studies of the distribution of oxides in various size fractions of stream sediments indicate that the thickness and prevalence of the coatings commonly increases with increasing particle size in the coarse sand and gravel size ranges. Figures 1 and 2 show a fairly typical distribution of leachable metals over nine size fractions from 62 microns up to 8-16 mm. The leaching solution used was neutral ammonium citrate with hydroxylamine hydrochloride, which effectively removes the oxide coatings without significantly attacking most silicates, carbonates or sulfides. Figure 1 shows metal content as ppm of the total sample; figure 2 shows' the same data as micrograms of metal per square millimeter of surface area.

A 4200 ton-per- hour marine transfer terminal, where river and oceangoing vessels simultaneously exchange cargos of coal and phosphate rock, is now in operation near the mouth of the Mississippi. Its materials handling machinery includes a bucket ladder barge unloader; a rope operated clamshell bucket unloader; a coal loader; and a rail mounted bucket wheel machine. The design and operation of this equipment is described as are the docks and conveying, breasting and barge-haul systems in use at the facility. Design considerations imposed by soil and river conditions, geography, operating needs and investment requirements are discussed. The economic significance of design and shipping innovations introduced by this facility is noted.

Analysis of Coal Pillar Stability (ACPS) software, released in 2018, integrates numerous empirical pillar design techniques. The ACPS program incorporates methodologies originally available as design tools from the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH), including Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS), and concepts including Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), the Mark-Bieniawski pillar formula, and pressure arch loading. The design methodologies that are the basis of ACPS were developed via analysis of significant amounts of real-world data and have been standards of the United States coal industry for decades. While there are empirical factors built into ACPS, making it ideal for use in U.S. coalfields, the concepts in the program have proven to be applicable in variable mine settings, and the software was developed to allow for user-based, site-specific modifications of key design inputs. Application of ACPS to cases outside the regions for which it was developed must be approached carefully, and continuous development of site-specific data is mandatory. A case study is presented involving the application of ACPS to assess pillar stability and assist future design for an underground lignite mine in Eastern Europe. Assessment of in-mine observations, review of the geology of the lignite mine, and evaluation of specific conditions associated with a failure event resulted in “calibration” of key input factors to ACPS. Scenarios evaluated with ACPS suggest that pillar strength and overburden depth are key factors for the determination of pillar stability and design in future areas.

The Sam Goosly or Equity silver deposit is fundamental- ly a discovery based on the analysis and interpretation of reconnaissance geochemical samples. The discovery was made by Kennco in an area of heavy forestation and wide- spread cover by thin glacial debris. No major mines had been discovered in the vicinity of the discovery prior to the geochemical reconnaissance, and the interpretation of the geochemical results therefore was based on data available through geologic mapping and the sample collection process. In the period 1959-1961, PE. Hirst and his crew, in 1962- 1965 P.T. Blackand his crew, and in 1966-1967 C.S. Ney and P.T. Black and their crew collected geochemical samples from the area of what is now the ore body. Several of these samples were compiled and reanalyzed in the winter of 1966- 1967 for various trace elements, including fluorine. A strong, almost 16-sq-km (10-sq-mile) fluorine anomaly was projected along with a very weak heavy metal anomaly. On the basis of this anomaly, a chalcopyrite-bearing quartz monzonite was discovered in 1967. This was a misleading, noneconomic discovery not associated with the Sam Goosly discovery. The interpretation of the geochemical data by Barakso that summer indicated that another source was responsible for the fluorine anomaly. The conclusion was based on the assemblage of trace elements. Therefore C.S. Ney recommended further regional soil sampling to check the original data. The early results of this follow-up sampling found over 33 ppm silver. First float, then ore outcrop was found in the area of the silver anomaly. The attached reprints complete the development of the property after the discovery of the outcrop of ore.

Introduction The mining industry is perhaps best characterized by the numerous and abnormally high risks associated with the business of mining and by its most basic assets - ore deposits, people and technology. At the most fundamental level, it is the quality and effective utilization of these basic assets that determine a mining company's ability to compete efficiently in the international market place. The gold industry has received much attention in recent years and especially in recent months, for good reason. This commodity serves as an excellent platform for the subsequent discussion of these three basic assets and their role in mining's future. Facets of the gold industry The fate of this noble metal in recent times illustrates some of the various risks associated with the mining industry and the importance of high-quality assets, whether they be ore deposits, people or technologies. The following comments pertaining to the gold industry help place proper focus on subsequent discussions. All monetary amounts given are in US dollars. Throughout 1997, falling gold prices broke record after record: first hitting three-year lows, then a 12-year low in July and finally an 18-year low at year's end. From Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 1997, the price of gold fell by more than $2.57/g ($80/oz), or some 22%. The decline in gold-mining profitability and stock prices was even more dramatic. At the beginning of 1997, the 20 largest gold producers in North America had a market capitalization of approximately $44.5 billion. At year's end, this market cap had fallen to $26.2 billion, a reduction of 41%. The total market cap of all the world's gold companies fell from $71 billion to $46 billion, a 35% drop (Serwer, 1998). Analyses suggest that, at a spot gold price of $9.65/g ($300/oz), only one, or possibly two, North American gold-producing companies can make money when break-even or "total costs of production" are considered. While strong hedge positions mitigate this situation in the short term, clearly, this is an industry in desperate straits. For example, write-downs for North American producers in 1997 were approximately $2.5 billion. Speculative short positions in 1997 were near historical record highs and generally exceeded long positions by factors of 9:1 or 10:1. Much of this is driven by some US commercial banks, hedge fund managers and commodity speculators who can significantly move gold prices sharply over short periods of time by selling gold they do not own in the expectation they can buy it back at a lower price before they have to deliver. These signifcant short positions are likely to continue as long as central banks are willing to sell or loan gold to financial institutions that in turn make the gold available to speculators who hope to capitalize on price fluctuations. The Far East accounts for approximately 26% of the annual demand for gold. Including India, the region accounts for 43% of total demand. More than 85% of the physical demand for gold is for investment jewelry in Asia and the Middle East. This demand is extraordinarily price sensitive. The fairly recent turmoil in Asian markets and economies, combined with currency devaluations throughout the region, have made gold more expensive (30% to 50% in local currencies) for those peoples most likely to treat gold as a safe investment haven. Higher interest rates also have reduced the amount of money they have to spend on consumer goods such as jewelry. All of these recent Asian events are deflationary in nature. In situ, or in-place leaching is concerned with the extraction of metals from natural mineral disseminations without removal from their geologic location which, in many cases, amounts to the reversal of the deposition process accompanied by a presumed increase in velocity of the processes, if the project is to be profitable. Solution mining processes involve removal of minerals such as sulfur, common salt, and potash, generally leaving cavernous voids, in contrast to in situ leaching which term is applied to the selective dissolution of a mineral from its gangue without sensible disturbance of the formation. Where such a process can be operated, the advantages are manifold and have been so recognized by miners from the earliest days of mining. Recent technological developments have encouraged a reassessment of the status of in situ leaching, and it now appears possible to extend the application of the method from a few isolated special situations to many uranium and copper deposits. Anaconda's interest in the techniques stems from long experience with vat and heap leaching, 'dump leaching, and natural leach activities associated with several established mines. Increasing activity through-out the industry has been noted, particularly in leaching low grade pillars and the peripheral zones of operating mines, often by the introduction of leach solutions via boreholes drilled from surface. Reactivation of dormant mines] using similar techniques has been successful. Over the long term, environmental improvement activity will lead to excess sulfuric acid production, even to a disposal problem. Cable bolts anchored with traditional two component polyester resin cartridges have successfully supported difficult roof conditions in underground mines. Resin cartridges provide a cost-effective cable bolt anchoring system with consistent anchorage performance characteristics when properly installed. The most commonly used cable bolts in the U.S. mining industry are 270 ksi (1,862 MPa), 0.7 and 0.6 inch (18 and 15 mm), seven-strand smooth cable with resin mixing bulbs (also known as bird cages), and 40- and 30-ton nominal capacity, respectively. However, there are other types of cable bolt anchoring systems aside from bird cages. Recently, many questions have been raised regarding the anchorage characteristics of various types of cable bolts. Keystone Mining Services, LLC (KMS), the affiliated engineering company of Jennmar Corporation, conducted a variety of controlled tests developed to closely model actual underground installations. These tests compared the performance of three commonly used cable bolt varieties, including plain, bird caged and indented seven-strand cable. Details of the laboratory testing and comparative analysis of the results are provided.

A virtual reality approach is presented that can aid entities such as mining companies and land use planners in communicating a visual understanding of a mining operation to interested stakeholders, citizens? groups, and public committees. These visualizations are particularly useful in permitting, production planning and mining closures, contributing to accurate communication and evaluation of mine plans, ultimate land use and evaluation of potential design options A case study is presented, that was created using commercially available virtual reality tools, to emphasize the benefits of visualization technologies in the sustainable development of mineral resources.

With the increasing demand for minerals and the decline in the quality of ore reserves, technologies to maximize recovery are critical to a mine?s economic success. Many mining waters exhibit the potential to form hardness-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, a continuously-fed chemical deposit control program is implemented by the mine site to inhibit these scales. The use of retractable scale coupons is the current industry standard for monitoring these programs; however, a key drawback to their use is the limited, and sometimes untimely amount of information they provide. A proprietary fouling analyzer has been developed that can be used to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scales in mining process streams. Consequently, it can be used to continually, and more effectively, communicate the efficacy of an antiscalant program, thereby providing the ability to compare different scale control programs and to optimize their feedrates. Case studies presented validate the applicability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery.

An adequate knowledge of the overall behavior of a rock mass at a given site is fundamental to the satisfactory design of a rock slope. The be- havior is controlled by a variety of factors, in- cluding rock type, geological structure, stress and ground water conditions. There are essentially three lines of approach that may be used to obtain information on the in-situ rock mass behavior for the purpose of the design of a rock slope: (1) Direct measurements of rock mass properties by means ol laboratory and field tests. (2) Evaluation of rock mass properties from a study of slope failure case histories and sta- tistical information on stable and unstable natural rock slopes. (3) Evaluation of in-situ behavior of rock mass by using a physical or mathematical model technique.

The Ohio Valley Coal Company is expand- ing its Powhatan Mine No. 6 near Alledonia, Ohio. This expansion includes a 20 rn (65 ft) height in crease for an existing 44 rn (145 ft) coal refuse - slurry impoundment dam. The dam is being raised by upstream construction which will involve placement of more than 15 m (50 ft) of new fill over an existing reinforced concrete decant structure. This structure is 0.76 rn (30 in.) square inside and its deepest portion was under 24 m (80 ft) of coal slurry and water. The top of the decant structure was not strong enough to safely support the new fill and, because of the slurry and water, there was no way to reinforce the structure from the outside. The structure was reinforced frorn the inside by sliplining 73 m (240 ft) of 0.66 rn (26 in.) OD, 0.53 rn (21 in.) ID polyethylene pipe, grouting around this pipe with cellular concrete. and constructing a steel-fiber reinforced micro-silica concrete transition at the upslope end of the pipe. Rehabilition of the decant structure was completed in August 1989. The rehabilitated decant structure is now performing satisfactorily as fill is being placed over it for raising the dam.

The mining industry is constantly in a state of flux -boom or bust; mine openings and closings. Part of the reason is the nature of ore deposits -they are there or they are not. Once they are mined, they are reclaimed and the move is on to the next deposit. Risks are usually high, and payoffs can be great or not so great. Many factors go into making a property payoff, and mining companies are continually searching for ways to remain profitable as long as possible. Computers and the people who can make them work are one of the ways available to improve productivity and ensure this happens. Computers have been used in the mining industry for the last 30 years (and more in a few cases). During the past 10 years, the explosion of micro-computing has changed how many mining companies do their work.

This paper will describe the copper concentrate slurry pipeline and pumping system between the concentrator and the port at Bougainville Copper Ltd. The operations of Bougainville Copper Ltd. are located on the island of Bougainville in the South Pacific. Geographically, it is the northernmost island of the Solomon Group but, politically, it is part of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a United Nations Trust territory administered by Australia, having recently been given self-government, with independence scheduled for December 1974. (Fig. 1). The island is approximately 130 miles long by 30 miles wide, with the Crown Prince mountain range forming a spine along its length. The mountains in place are over 8,000 feet high with the mine located on the western flank at an elevation of 2,200 feet. Exploration on Bougainville for copper by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia (CRA) began in 1963 and by 1968, through geophysical, geochemical and diamond drilling methods, an orebody containing nearly one billion tons of ore grading approximately 0.48% Cu. and sane gold had been outlined. Bougainville Copper Ltd., the company operating the mine, is 53.6% wined by CRA, 20% mined by the government of Papua New Guinea with the public Folding the remainder of the shares. Electrowinning is a process by which metals, such as copper or nickel, are recovered from aqueous electrolyte solutions resulting from the extraction of the metal ion from an acidic or basic leach solution. The electrolyte or “pregnant” solution is customarily forwarded to an electrowinning "tankhouse." In the tankhouse, the metal ions are deposited on cathode plates by electrodeposition and then recovered from the cathode plates. Other processes may be employed with other metals, such as nickel, zinc, among others, to produce an electrolyte from which their respective metals are obtained. During the electrowinning (electrodeposition) stage, elemental metal is plated out at the electrowinning cathode and oxygen evolves at an insoluble anode. The evolution of oxygen gas forms bubbles which entrain strong acid electrolyte, carrying it into the air above the electrowinning tank in the form of a fine mist or spray when the bubbles break. An acidic mist is generated above the electrolyte. This mist or spray then spreads throughout the electrowinning tankhouse. The acidic mist is corrosive and a health hazard and can cause extreme discomfort to the skin, eyes, and respiratory systems of tankhouse workers, especially during hot weather conditions. Polyfluoroalkyl based products (PFAS) have been widely applied as anti-misting agents in the electrowinning of metals in an acidic electrolyte. Functionalized PFAS compounds, however, have come under increased scrutiny by the EPA due to their impact on human health and the environment. There remains need for improved acid mist suppression agents for electrolysis and electrodeposition, particularly for products free of fluoroalkyl components.

Rock salt has been mined by the solution method for many years in many countries. Attempts have been made in the past in Canada and various other countries to produce potash by the' same method. However, only Kalium Chemicals Limited (1) has been successful, possibly because the conditions in Saskatchewan are the most favorable conditions to be found so far for the development of a solution mining method for potash. There are significant differences in solution mining of rock salt and solution mining of potash. First, rock salt deposits are relatively pure in respect to soluble minerals, whereas potash is never found in the pure state and contains Substantial amounts of other soluble minerals, particularly rock salt. In comparison to rock salt, much less potash is dissolved and brought to the surface for the same amount of water circulated through the orebody. The amount of water to be evaporated per unit weight of product is a major difference. Much greater amounts of water must be evaporated when producing potash and the treatment of the brine is more complicated because other dissolved salts have to be separated. Secondly, the rock salt deposits, particularly the domes, are much thicker. Bed thickness is of prime importance because it determines the yield of a well and consequently the economics of the process. Furthermore, as rock salt provides a strong roof structure, larger cavities can be developed and this prolongs the life of the rock salt well.

Over the past several years, Somerset International has successfully installed over 20 patented Sub325® Fine Coal Recovery Systems in the United States, Australia, Canada and Russia. These installations recover between 5 TPH and 40 TPH for the host sites. In addition to the increased revenue from the direct recovery of a recirculating load (Screen Bowl “Insurance”, Direct Recovery vs. Indirect Recovery via Recycle, CPSA 2020), host sites have seen benefits ranging from improved operation of refuse equipment to a reduction in the solids content of the refuse streams. As Somerset has improved ultra-fine coal recovery through the introduction of Sub325® Effluent Flotation and, most recently, the Sub325® Effluent Settler™, the amount of coal that has been recovered from these systems has increased by up to as much as 25%. Many host sites have taken a sense of ownership in the Somerset system and consider it to be a critical circuit in the overall optimal performance of the plant. In the past year, Somerset has taken the initiative to expand upon the capabilities of the Sub325® Fine Coal Recovery System, primarily the Sub325® Solid Bowl Centrifuge, to include Refuse Tailings Dewatering to allow for co-mingled refuse disposal. As slurry ponds and boreholes are becoming difficult to impossible to permit and operate, there is a need for a reliable, low-maintenance, continuous operation that can produce a handleable refuse cake. Refuse tailings disposal applications are by no means limited to coal plants and impoundments. Somerset has successfully tested at iron ore and phosphate locations throughout the world and have begun commercial installations. The ability to dewater -325 mesh material, whether it be coal, coal refuse, iron ore tailings, or something else, is a vital piece of processing capability for the continued production of mining operations across the globe. This paper highlights the success that Somerset has had in the coal industry worldwide as well as the initial successes with phosphate, iron ore, and copper tailings (patent pending).

This paper reviews the growth pattern in bauxite and alumina production, and primary aluminum smelting through 1980. Because the alumina and primary metal are intermediate products of the major integrated aluminum companies, it is not possible to determine their production costs. The costs indicated in this paper are order of magnitude costs based on published figures and the market price of these products. The conclusions in this paper indicate the general pattern of growth in the aluminum industry and are not meant to be a substitute for the feasibility and economic studies that are needed for individual bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum smelting projects.
