Agrico Chemical Company, as we presently know it, is the result of the coming together of several different fertilizer operations. The Williams Companies, our parent organization, first entered the fertilizer business in 1971, when it acquired the fertilizer operations of the Gulf Oil Company. This gave us, among other things, the manufacturing facility at Donaldsonville, Louisiana. In 1972, The Williams Companies acquired Agrico Chemical Company from Continental Oil Company, bringing in a manufacturing facility and phosphate mines at Pierce Florida. Our Florida Mines are in the region commonly known as the Bone Valley Region of Florida. The majority of the phosphate fertilizer produced in the United States utilizes rock mined in this region. The Donaldsonville Plant was originally built in 1967-68 on the site of the old Faustina Plantation at an approximate cost of $80,000,000. (This plant is commonly referred to as our Faustina Plant.) Until such time as Agrico was acquired from Continental Oil, the Donaldsonville Facility was solely used to upgrade phosphoric acid into finished granular products.

Worldwide production of natural zeolites during 2001 was estimated to be about 3.5 Mt (3.85million st). Construction and agriculture continued to be the major consumers. Estimated production in North America during 2001, including the United States, Canada and Mexico, was about 40 kt (44,000 st). In the United States and Canada, the zeolitic tuffs are ground, extruded or modified for use as adsorbents, desiccants, ion-exchange media and carriers. In Mexico and the rest of the world, the zeolitic tuffs are cut into dimension stone that is used in construction. Zeolitic tuffs are usually composed of the minerals clinoptilolite, mordenite or both. They occur in a variety of colors and are easy to cut and shape. And they have low thermal conductivity. This construction application is classified with dimension stone rather than with chemical and agricultural uses.

"A three-dimensional CFD model of a straight grate furnace for indurating iron-oxide pellets was developed for exploring conditions of furnace operation for fluid flow, heat transfer and reactions. The model includes reactions for natural gas combustion in the gas phase and calcination and magnetite oxidation as well as drying in the pellet bed. The performance of the model was investigated with a series of pellet production rates that included adjustments to the fuel rates to achieve proper induration temperatures in the pellet bed. The model may be used to discover opportunities for process improvement.IntroductionIron oxide pellets are a feedstock to blast furnaces for iron making. Pellets require physical strength characteristics needed to maintain their integrity during storage, handling, transportation and smelting. Pellets are produced from iron ore in a series of mineral processing operations that form wet green balls from slurries of iron-ore concentrate with binders, such as bentonite, and possibly fluxing-agents such as limestone and dolomite. The green balls are dried, fired at high temperature, and then cooled in an induration furnace to achieve the strength and chemical composition required for efficient reduction and slag separation in blast furnaces. Induration furnaces are generally straight grates or grate-kilncooler configurations. These furnaces operate with pellet beds passing through a series of temperature zones to control drying and chemical reactions in the bed.Process air passes through the zones in an overall counter flow direction to the pellets for efficient heat transfer and energy recovery from the cooling stage. Consequently, the zone conditions and the overall furnace performance are highly coupled. Thus, it becomes challenging to predict how changes to any single zone may affect the rest of the furnace. To gain a better understanding of machine performance and coupling, a three-dimensional, steady-state model of a complete straight grate induration furnace was created using computational fluid dynamics (CFD)."

An investigation into the source mechanism of mining-induced seismic activity plays a vital role in understanding the various modes of failure observed in the underground deep-level South African mining environment. The seismic events data for this study was captured by the mine-wide seismic system operating at Kloof Gold Mine. This system comprises 40 4.5 Hz tri-axial geophones sampling at 6 kHz installed at locations that surround the stopes mining the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR), Main Reef (MR) and Kloof Reef (KR). A set of 103,753 mining-related seismic events (-3.0≤ ML ≤2.7) that occurred during 2017 and 2018 was selected for this study. The mining depth of these seismic events ranges from 1600 – 4200 m; most located close to stopes mining the VCR ore body. The main criteria used to select a subset of events for detailed analysis were the number of stations that recorded the seismic event and the azimuthal distribution of the sensors.

In our work as health physicists*, we do a lot of public speaking and interaction with the public on issues related to development of uranium mining and milling (?uranium recovery?) in the US. Understandingly, the public has important concerns about this. Accordingly, this paper is presented in a ?question and answer? format in which we have tried to capture what are some of the most common concerns we hear from citizens and address them. We have attempted to do so based on the best scientific information we have, representing information well documented in peer-reviewed scientific literature and consensus positions from both national and international scientific standard setting bodies and related committees. We have included some of the more important of these scientifically-based references to support the information provided. Practical space limitations prevent completeness in this regard in some cases. In recent years, coal mining safety has attained national attention due to several highly publicized disasters. Despite these threats to worker safety and health, the U.S. relies on the mining of coal to meet its need for electrical power, with 42% of electricity in the U.S. generated through the burning of coal (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012b; United Mine Workers of America, n.d.). Furthermore, the production of coal continues to increase and reach record levels every year (National Mining Association, 2012; U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012a). For this reason, the coal mining industry must continue to find ways to protect its workers while maintaining productivity. One potential approach to protecting workers while maintaining productivity is through improving the safety culture at coal mines. In order to achieve this culture, operators, employees, the inspectorate, etc. must share a fundamental commitment to safety as a value. This type of culture is known in other industries as a ?safety culture,? and can be defined as the characteristics of the work environment (such as the norms, rules, and common understandings) that influence facility personnel?s perceptions of the importance that the organization places on safety. Fundamental to improving safety culture within an organization is understanding the existing safety culture; improvements cannot be made without first elucidating areas that require improvement. This manuscript details the process undertaken by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) to assess the safety culture at five underground coal mines across the United States. The purpose of this manuscript is to present the aggregated results from those five safety culture assessments conducted at underground coal mines. Additionally, some general recommendations for areas where coal mines might focus their attention as part of their attempts to improve safety culture are offered.

The Urad property had been worked intermittently for over 50 years before American Metal Climax (AMAX) started an extensive exploration program on this property in 1961. The detailed studies of the property proved a large ore body of low grade molybdenum ore that could be mined by modified panel caving methods. Mine development and mill construction for a 5000 TPD operation was completed in July 1967. The Urad mine and plant site is located 55 miles west of Denver near Berthoud Pass. The plant elevation is 10,200 feet. The crushing plant is located underground because available surface area is re¬stricted by snow slide hazards. Crushing plant layout and ventilation system design for the Urad mine was based on our operating experience at similar crushing facilities located at the Climax operations. Low speed conveyors of generous width, adequate exhaust volumes at all ore transfer locations, large hoods and good conveyor skirting have made the Urad underground crusher dust control operations very satisfactory. Good maintenance and cleanup of the crusher facilities have made a clean working area with very low dust exposure. The ore from the mine is dropped approximately 1000 feet through ore passes to scraping drifts above the crusher and then transferred to the coarse ore bin by 150 h.p. slusher hoists. A reciprocating plate feeder under the coarse ore bin feeds a 48 x 60 jaw crusher. Ore from under the crusher is conveyed on a 48 in. belt to a vibrating screen where oversize passes through a 7 ft. Standard cone crusher. The crushed ore along with the screen undersize is conveyed on a 42 in. belt to a 1000 ton surge bin.

"The DC Clean Rivers (DCCR) Project is a 25 year, $2.6 Billion court ordered project to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) discharging into the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and Rock Creek, and also reduce flooding in the northern areas of the District of Columbia. Like all massive infrastructure programs, DCCR faced technical challenges, management challenges, risks of cost and schedule overruns, procurement challenges, and financing challenges. While DC Water is no stranger to large capital improvement projects (CIP), this CSO Program represents a once in a lifetime event for the Owner requiring the assembly of a single purpose team to implement. Some of the DCCR Project team’s most successful accomplishments to date are attributable to its introduction of early contractor involvement (ECI) to thoroughly vet the work from the perspective of the future constructors, development of functional baselines to share risks that are difficult to price and reduce reliance on geotechnical baseline interpretation during tunnel excavation, and attainment of financing through Municipal Century Green Bonds based on using design criteria of a minimum of 100 year life for the structures to establish intergenerational equity and fairness. This paper will discuss these innovations in detail and provide some sets of recommendations for the underground industry on when and how to use different approaches to better manage projects of this magnitude. INTRODUCTION The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) is an independent multi-jurisdictional authority that was established in 1996. Its primary mission is to provide water distribution services to more than 640,000 residents in the District of Columbia (District), and sewer treatment and disposal to 1.6 million residents of the District, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland and Fairfax and Loudoun counties in Virginia."

Given the recent focus on powered haulage incidents within the US mining sector, an appraisal of collision avoidance/warning systems (CXSs) through the lens of the available research literature is timely. This paper describes a rapid review that identifies, characterizes, and classifies the research literature to evaluate the maturity of CXS technology through the application of a Technology Readiness Assessment. Systematic search methods were applied to three electronic databases, and relevant articles were identified through the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sixty-four articles from 2000 to 2020 met these criteria and were categorized into seven CXS technology categories. Review and assessment of the articles indicates that much of the literature-based evidence for CXS technology lies within lower levels of maturity (i.e., components and prototypes tested under laboratory conditions and in relevant environments). However, less evidence exists for CXS technology at higher levels of maturity (i.e., complete systems evaluated within operational environments) despite the existence of commercial products in the marketplace. This lack of evidence at higher maturity levels within the scientific literature highlights the need for systematic peer-reviewed research to evaluate the performance of CXS technologies and demonstrate the efficacy of prototypes or commercial products, which could be fostered by more collaboration between academia, research institutions, manufacturers, and mining companies. Additionally, results of the review reveal that most of the literature relevant to CXS technologies is focused on vehicle-to-vehicle interactions. However, this contrasts with haul truck fatal accident statistics that indicate that most haul truck fatal accidents are due to vehicle-to-environment interactions (e.g., traveling through a berm). Lastly, the relatively small amount of literature and segmented nature of the included studies suggests that there is a need for incremental progress or more stepwise research that would facilitate the improvement of CXS technologies over time. This progression over time could be achieved through continued long-term interest and support for CXS technology research.

An atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between silica plate and glass sphere in sodium oleate solutions. Hydrophobic forces were observed when the two surfaces were activated by CaOH+ or MgOH+ ions. The force measurements conducted in the absence of the surfactant showed that the activated silica surfaces do not exhibit the primary hydration forces that have been observed between unactivated surfaces. The activation mechanism was studied by calculating the contributions from electrostatic and chemical interactions to the total free energy change. The results suggest that the adsorption of the hydroxo-complexes is controlled mainly by the lateral interactions between the adsorbed species on the silica surface.

One of the most important processing engineering tools for designing mineral processing facilities is linear circuit analysis. This technique, originally conceived and developed by Meloy, Williams, and Fuerstenau nearly four decades ago, provides fundamental insights regarding how unit operations interact and respond when arranged in multi-stage processing circuits. Researchers have successfully utilized this tool to improve the operating performance of industrial processing circuits incorporating coal spirals, magnetic separators, mineral spirals, and eddy current separators. More recently, advanced versions of this tool have also been developed to provide a standardized framework for circuit mass balance calculations, to output exact analytical solutions to mass yield and value-based efficiency expressions, and to estimate uncertainty propagation in separation circuits. This article reviews the historical development of linear circuit analysis, describes how the technique has evolved to address more complex circuit design problems, and presents industrial case studies that highlight the importance of this process engineering tool.

Passive treatment of mine drainage using constructed wetlands has been employed on coal and metal mine sites since about 1985. The technology has advanced significantly since then; there are currently over 600 of these systems treating coal mine drainage in the Eastern U.S. at flow rates of hundreds of liters per minute. Passive treatment performance at three metal mines discussed in this paper has been positive for a wide variety of flows, water chemistry, and climates. The sites include a high-altitude underground copper mine, acidic seepage from a gold heap leach pad, and pumped effluent from an active underground lead mine in Missouri.

Tennessee was the leading producer state accounting for 64 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 67 percent of total ball clay production was airfloat, 22 percent was crude or shredded and 11 percent was water-slurried.ConsumptionIn 2013, domestic ball clay producers sold clays to the following markets: ceramic floor and wall tile (44 percent); exports (21 percent); sanitaryware (18 percent); miscellaneous ceramics (9 percent); fillers, extenders, and binders, and unspecified uses (4 percent each), based on 2012 end use patterns and current markets. Other markets accounted for less than 1 percent of the remaining ball clay sales or use. Sales reported for the manufacture of fiberglass or most filler, extender, and binder applications were likely to have been mainly kaolin mined or purchased by the ball clay producers.PricesThe average value of domestically produced ball clay was approximately $47/t ($43/st) in 2013 compared with $46/t ($42/st) in 2012, on the basis of a preliminary survey of domestic ball clay producers. The unit values of exported and imported ball clay were $126/t ($114/ st) and $373/t ($338/st), respectively, in 2013, compared with $62/t ($56/st) and $314/t ($285/st), respectively, in 2012. Unit values for most large export shipments increased in 2013, and a larger number of low-tonnage, high-value export shipments were shipped in 2013 than in 2012, resulting in a doubling of the average export value. "In order to control Quaternary loose layer settlement in East China, there are monitoring results based on the 3 water level observation holes and 7 sand layer of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor. Un-der the conditions of upper group water injecting to lower group of loose layer, the deformation characteristics of upper, middle and lower group of loose sandy soil layer changing with time and relationship with the water level are studied. The constitutive relation of stress-strain is also studied at different sand layers. Research results show that using water injecting from upper group into lower group of loose layer can ease the loose layer compression deformation. With the water level dropped, in East China soil creep deformation occurred, which accord with viscoelasto plastic model. The deformation of lower sand group has clear later effect and no direct relationship with water level. The results provide an important basis for the study East China stratum settlement model and water management. INTRODUCTION Ground-surface subsidence is a common geological disaster, which has the features of continuous, changing slowly, concealment (Y.P. Yin et al. 2005). Today, due to underground mining and constructions in formation compression, surface subsidence is wide-spread in the world, which is the environmental geological problems in the worldwide that cannot be ignored (Y.Q. Xu et al. 2006, D.L Gallo-way et al. 2000, Qiu, B. et al. 2011). The eastern region of China has generally geological disasters in coal mine geological caused by the thick loose layer settlement like as mine shaft failure. Stratum dehydration consolidation is a major cause of loose layer settlement (H.Y .Liu et al. 2007). A method of water injection using ground water to stable water level is proposed, which can effectively control the loose layer caused by compression settlement(J. Chai et al. 2012&.2013). Accurately knowledge the characteristics of strata deformation is the premise of settlement management (Q.C. He et al. 2006). Previous re-search (J.F. Miu et al. 1996, X.Y. Gu et al.1998, Y. Zhang et al. 2006), mainly studies are focused condition of the city pumping irrigation, de-formation characteristics of middle and up loose layers. On a group of aquifer in East China, the loose layer losing water is caused by coal mining, bottom water drainage and overlying strata water flowing fractured zone hydrophobic induced by mining, which the dehydration conditions have great difference from one to another. The Position of water loss is centralized in bottom aquifer, and the formers of ground subsidence geological environment and settlement mechanism are different. According to the study of stratum settlement, usually the de-formation of sand layer is ignored(C.H. Liu et al. 2004), but few studies show that the sand layer have the plastic deformation, and contains the creep deformation, water content of sand soil may become the main settlement layer (Z.X. Wei, 2002, C.H. Liu et al. 2004)."

Rekindled public concern about lead toxicity has intensified the awareness of lead-bearing materials in contact with the environment and the human population. Lead's common association with other metals makes the increasingly restrictive lead standards a primary concern for a large number of metal and metal-related industries. In commercial scale demonstration tests with lead-bearing wastes, the HRD Flame Reactor process has a demonstrated ability to separate and recover over 95% of the lead as a recyclable oxide, while rendering the remainder of the material as vitrified, non-leaching, and nonhazardous co-product. Recent Flame Reactor process tests and preliminary cost data for secondary lead soda slag are highlighted.

Rock breakage using blasting is one of the important operations of the mining industry. The delay timing decides the initiation sequence of holes in the blasts and is a crucial factor to improve the overall blast performance. Blast-induced ground vibration is an undesired yet unavoidable outcome of blasting. Peak particle velocity (PPV) is commonly used to measure the magnitude of blast-induced ground vibration. Channelization and better utilization of explosive energy delay are provided between blast holes using initiating systems. The use of different initiation systems even on the same site results in a very significant difference in the values of PPV generated. Due to scattered delay timings of pyrotechnic detonators, the scaled distance predictor equations obtained become unreliable. The error/scatter in delay timing leads to overlapping of holes and hence increases in maximum charge per delay. In this paper, an analytical approach has been discussed to measure the overlapping of holes during blasting with initiation systems having inherent cap scatter. The analytical approach will be calculating the probable overlapping of holes due to scatter in delay timing and will help blasting engineers to understand the variation in maximum charge per delay due to pyrotechnic based initiating systems. In this study, a total number of 102 blasts were conducted using different initiation systems at two different opencast coal mine and 221 corresponding blast vibrations events were recorded.

Federal and state regulations, in an effort to reduce acid rain, are becoming increasing more stringent regarding sulfur content of fossil fuels. Whereas coal from Illinois and Ohio contains between 1.5 and 37. sulfur, Wyoming has billions of tons of coal reserves containing less than O.5/% sulfur. However, much of Wyoming's coal is high in moisture, 25-30%, and low in energy, 8,200 to 8,900 BTU, vs. 10,500+ BTU for Illinois and Ohio Basin coals. Wyoming currently ships in excess of 130 million tons of coal to utilities as distant as Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas. With freight charges ranging from $12.00-$20.00/ton, more than $1.5 billion a year is spent to transport water. A test shipment of more than 50,000 tons of Wyoming coal has recently been made from Mobil's Cabello Rojo Mine, south of Gillette, by Burlington Northern to the Robert's Bank British Columbia coal terminal for transloading and shipment to Taiwan Power Company. This coal assayed approximately 8,400 BTU/lb. and 277. moisture. Carbontec Energy Corporation feels the future availability of dried coal containing 11,000+ BTU could substantially enhance the potential export as well as the domestic market for Wyoming coal. Large and small utilities, along with industrial furnaces require tens of millions of tons of Wyoming, West Virginia, and other Eastern The federal government is encouraging the expenditure of hundreds of million of dollars by utilities to retrofit their boilers to allow them to burn higher sulfur coal. This program, if carried to completion, would cost many tens of billions of dollars, with the net result being high power costs sustained by the utilities. These costs will be passed on and paid for by the American consumer. A sensible alternative would be the burning of low sulfur coal by the utilities, without costly capital and operating expenditures. Carbontec Energy feels the successful operation of a Carbondry Coal Drying Plant in Wyoming will be the forerunner to other similar and larger operations in the State. CARBONTEC RESEARCH The activities of Carbontec's personnel to develop a viable process to dry sub-bituminous and lignite coal goes back some 14 years; in fact, for some of us it goes back to 1962 when we were involved in a program under which lignite coal from Truax Trayer's Velva mine was placed in low sulfur coal, which are burned alone or blended with high sulfur, Midwestern coal. Carbontec believes that a high BTU. reasonably priced, shippable coal fuel produced in Wyoming and delivered at costs competitive with Eastern low sulfur coal, could offer substantial benefits to Wyoming coal producers, utility customers, and to the State of Wyoming.
