The concept of initiating a large action-oriented contract, directed toward inherently safe mining systems, was conceived by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in January 1970. At that time we were in the process of establishing research contracts and grants, about 100 of which were let in FY 71 to deal individually with fairly specific technological areas. These projects in the aggregate covered a wide spectrum of health and safety problems. What appeared to be necessary was the creation of a project or program that would provide a focal point for the demonstration of many of the results of this research and also in the action sense culminate with working hardware and systems that could be tested and demonstrated over a fairly long teen. The concept of working demonstrable systems, rather than just a conceptual study, was, felt to be necessary for two significant reasons. In the development of any new system, the translation from concept to working hardware is usually a costly and time consuming process which acts as a deterrent to implementation. Secondly, many decisions in the mining community to change equipment or systems ,are based on first hand observation of the new system, in operational practice, an attitude which is certainly understandable in view of the high capital costs of equipment. TBM utilization rate is a component of machine performance prediction and critical for developing a reliable estimate of the construction completion time and cost of the tunnel. Estimation of the utilization rate involves identifying and quantifying the time dedicated to each activity in a tunneling jobsite. Ring building is a common activity in TBM tunneling and takes a large amount of tunnel excavation time when using shielded TBMs. This paper concentrates on the effect of tunnel diameter on the duration of downtimes related to ring building and examines the impact of machine diameter on downtimes. For this purpose, the dependency of segment installation time to segment configuration, and also the diameter of the tunnel was investigated. Furthermore, the ring building time for four tunnels with different sizes of diameters and a variety of ring arrangement were analyzed and the relationship between TBM diameter and segment installation time and consequently TBM utilization was evaluated.

Longwall face-to-face equipment transfers or moves are, for many companies, the largest single source of non-productive time in a longwall mining system. Detailed planning and resourceful thinking are paramount for economical, safe, and timely longwall moves. New equipment and innovative techniques are frequently tested in order to reduce overall move time. Determining the cost effectiveness of these ideas is difficult since the decision is influenced by many subjective factors. A project scheduling simulation model of the longwall move process was developed in order to analyze and assess the economic viability of innovative transfer methods and equipment. The model provides a project duration frequency distribution and lists of critically indexed activities and paths. It compares the monetary savings from reduced transfer time and capital costs for several innovative ideas.

China?s remarkable levels of economic growth during the past three decades have lifted almost 300 million people out of poverty. This amazing achievement has placed an increasing demand on energy and minerals, especially coal, which supplies 68.7 percent of China?s energy (June 2011). It is estimated that China mined more than 3 Gt (3.3 billion st) of coal in 2010, three times as much when compared to merely 10 years earlier. Such an impressive achievement does not come without major costs ?? including concerns with mine safety and an increasing number of occupational illnesses due to fast growth. This article reports on one of the major safety concerns in China?s coal mining, dust and dust control practices, and known cases of caol worker?s pneumoconiosis affiliated with prolonged exposure to excessive coal dusts. The exact size of China?s mining industry is not known, but it is estimated the coal industry is at least five-million people strong, and the metal and nonmetals industry probably employs another three million people. To meet increasing energy demand, China mined more than 3.1 Gt (3.4 billion st) of coal in 2010 from its 15,000 plus coal operations1, most of which are small- to medium-sized operations with annual coal productions ranging from a few thousand tons to 300 kt (330,000 st). These small coal operations are typically in remote areas, inadequately engineered, poorly ventilated and still using rudimentary drilling and blasting mining methods employing antiquated mining equipment and, presenting safety concerns, i.e., methane and dust explosions.

"Despite being a field of study that requires practical knowledge and experience, mining engineering education follows the same pattern in most mining universities around the world, consisting of theoretical courses and laboratory-based practical modules (Mischo, 2015). The possibility of having practical training in real mining conditions on actual mine sites or processing plants is limited, while the only contact that undergraduate students have with mining operations during their time of study is usually through shorttime internships or visits in the context of educational trips. Real integration between universities and the mining industry may be scarce, which does not help students to observe the actual processes and thus understand the whole picture of mining operations.Indirect practical training is now possible since that technology is shifting from mechanical to digital, and the use of virtual reality — in the context of Mining 4.0 — can provide additional experience to the learning process. However, virtual reality is limited to the visual impression and is also limited in actions (Binder et al., 2018). In any case, when there is not a proper pragmatic view of how the different disciplines link to each other, especially if there is a lack of communication, unfortunately the results could be seen at a later stage in the mines as a poor performance of professionals and workers.Another major challenge for educating specialists in the mining sector is that experimental mines suitable for practical education, where the skills and knowhow could be developed and/or enhanced, are rare worldwide. Such research and educational (R&E) facilities are practically former metal ore mines that have been transformed into experimental sites. Besides being limited in number, not all facilities of this kind serve both a research and educational purpose.An early example of asolely experimental mines is the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Mine site operated by LKAB in Sweden, where systematic research on rock mechanics and mining engineering was successfully carried out in the 1980s. As a result, the developed underground mining technology was applied in LKAB’s mines at a later stage. There have also been research mines within collieries such as the former Lake Macquarie Mine at New South Wales in Australia and the Zeche Tremonia Mine in Germany), but these are no longer in operation (Mischo, 2015)."

The gray, dark gray and black colors of the sediments and the presence of pyrite in the Carlin, Jerritt Canyon, Horse Canyon, Betze, and Gold Acres sediment-hosted disseminated gold (SHDG) deposits indicate that these rocks are not oxidized with respect to carbon and iron sulfide. Both ore and non-ore host rocks generally are dark colored. Analyses for noncarbonate carbon (usually called organic carbon) in samples from SHDG deposits and related unmineralized rocks indicate that these rocks contain from a few tenths to a few percent carbon. We use the term noncarbonate carbon because, strictly speaking, organic carbon denotes carbon that is bound to hydrogen. However, the carbon present in SHDG deposits and related rocks has very little hydrogen chemically bound to it. Rocks with less than 2% organic carbon are usually gray in color. The dark colors in our samples are due to the relatively high temperatures that these rocks have experienced relative to organic matter maturation. We confirm the results of Nelson et al. (1982) that previous reports (for example, Radtke and Scheiner, 1970) were incorrect in reporting significant amounts of humic acids, extractable hydrocarbons (bitumen) or "carbonaceous" material. We believe these reports had problems with contamination or misdirected emphasis. Our samples consisted of unweathered rocks, collected mainly from mine cuts (benches, trenches, cores) and put into glass containers or wrapped in aluminum foil to avoid contamination. Only a few samples were collected from natural outcrops. We were careful to avoid samples in proximity to blast holes that were packed with ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel ("ANFO"). Contamination by ANFO may explain some of the previous reports of hydrocarbons, pyrobitumens, humic acids and anomalous nitrogen. When we were collecting samples, it was apparent that in addition to lithologic and color differences, the surface appearance of the rocks was distinguishable: "preg robbing" material that had a sooty surface; "graphitic" rock with a shiny surface; and more ordinary rocks that had a flat gray or black appearance. [Preg robbing is a term for ores that adsorb gold from the milling circuit; the graphitic material had not been x-rayed to actually identify graphite.] We hoped that laboratory study of these samples would show some fundamental differences that we could relate to ore genesis. Even though these sample types appeared different in the field, we could not distinguish any differences in thermal maturity (see below). Normal petroleum/organic geochemical laboratory procedures (solvent extraction, Rock-eval, pyrolysis-gas chromatography) failed to yield much information because the carbon was over-mature relative to oil and gas generation. Rock-eval results show less than 20 (± 20) mg of pyrolizable hydrocarbons per gram organic carbon (and an indeterminate Tmax) indicating that the organic matter in these deposits is burned-out relative to petroleum generation [with an H/C (atomic) ratio of less than 0.41. Because of the non-definitive results from standard organic geochemical methods, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the carbon. Prior to XRD, samples were treated with HCl and HF acids (1) to remove quartz that has a peak near 26° [20] at the position of the 002 peak of graphite and (2) to concentrate the carbon to a level detectable by XRD. The residue was put on a colodion mount and analyzed by XRD. The XRD analyses yielded a broad peak at 26° [20]. The shape of this peak indicates that the carbon is more thermally mature than anthracite rank coal but less mature than crystallized graphite. Highly stressed excavations in hard brittle rock may fail by self-initiated, triggered or dynamically loaded strainbursts (Moss and Kaiser 2021). The low-frequency part of seismic radiation associated with strainbursts is described by a crush-type seismic source mechanism with a significant negative (implosive) isotropic component and a ‘pancake-shape’ CLVD deviatoric component. The seismic source is co-located with the excavation damage site. For such strainbursts, the ejection velocity is primarily related to the depth of strainbursting, the rock mass bulking characteristics, the duration of the bulking process, and the effectiveness of the support system. For dynamically loaded strainbursts, the displacement and energy demand may be augmented by the impact of the stress wave from a distant seismic event. This article describes the failure process and factors contributing to rock deformation and energy demands for support design. Case examples are used to demonstrate the dependence of rock displacements, rock ejection and energy demand on the factors described above. A seismic source model is proposed to assess the depth of strainbursting and the duration of the related bulking process by using seismic monitoring data. The implications for support design are briefly discussed.

The analysis of the phenomena involved in the determination of the compressive strength of iron-ore agglomerates leads to the identification of the important parameters. It is shown mathematically that the pellet rupture strength is proportional to the cross-sectional area. Fracture is initiated at the center of the pellets by the tensile stresses developed by the compressive loads normally to the compression axis. The variation in strength between individual pellets of identical composition and subjected to identical treatments is due to internal voids of varying sizes, that act as stress-concentration sites. Two novel testing procedures are proposed. The first consists of testing the pellets between two plates having three steel spheres each. This configuration simulates much better the environment actually encountered by the pellets. The second procedure consists of a thick-walled cylinder in which a piston penetrates; a large group of pellets is tested simultaneously, as the stress versus strain plot is being recorded. This latter test presents significant advantages over the conventional testing procedure; the main one is that one single test is sufficient to characterize the mechanical response of the pellets.

The emphasis is on the identification of practical flotation methods of processing coals containing unusually coarse and/or fine feed sizes, of increasing the recovery of oxidized and/or difficult to float coal, and of increasing the selectivity of coal over pyrite in high sulfur coals.

Stochastic simulation has been routinely used for performing risk and sensitivity analyses in a variety of fields. The commonly used means of generating the simulations has been the Monte Carlo approach which usually employs a Simple Random Sampling (SRS) scheme of the variable distributions. This method is prone to sample clustering and requires a large number of samples to represent the distribution faith-fully. This can become problematic for simulating complex processes where it is impossible to run an arbitrarily large number of replicate simulations. The Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) method uses a stratified sampling approach which assures representation of the input distributions for any given number of samples. In this paper the LHS and SRS approaches are compared using a petroleum resource estimation example.

Fall of ground accidents continue to be a source of injury in underground metal mines. MSHA accident statistics indicate that most rock fall accidents occur at a new face where drilling and blasting methods are used. Removing loose rock by scaling is imperative to removing the potential for rock fall injury. Detection of potentially loose rock could improve the scaling process and result in fewer rock falls. Infrared thermal imaging cameras were investigated as far back as 1966 as a tool for loose rock detection. Early on it was clear that sensitivity (e.g. detectable temperature increment) is a key factor in this application. Both pixel resolution and temperature resolution have greatly improved with modern instruments. This paper describes an evaluation of modern infrared thermal imaging camera technology to detect loose rock conditions at six underground metal mines in the western U.S. It was found that thermal images provide a high resolution visual discrimination between loose rock and intact rock. However, detecting loose rock was difficult in cases where the rock and ventilation air were at the same temperature. Loose rock was detected when rock was both warmer and cooler than the ventilation air temperature. Warm rock with cool ventilation air provided the best conditions for detection.

Local community acceptance is a key aspect of planning and managing mining projects, whether through sustainability assessment and reporting or corporate social responsibility programs. However, there has been very little research to understand the determinants of community acceptance. This paper seeks to identify key mine characteristics and demographic factors that influence individual acceptance of mining projects. Six demographic factors and 16 mine characteristics were selected based on literature review. Four of the six demographics factors were confirmed to be significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with people?s attitude of the importance of the mine characteristics. All sixteen mine characteristics are identified as important factors. The most important mining factors are Job opportunities, water shortage or pollution, air pollution and land pollution. Both the mining and control groups have same opinion of 12 mining characteristics and differ on four (infrastructure improvement, labor shortage for other businesses, noise pollution, and mine life). During design and management of mines, this data can be used as a reference. This result will facilitate better choice experiment (survey) design for discrete choice modeling. Such discrete choice models can provide a viable framework for data-driven community engagement and sustainable mine management.

The volume of data produced by operating mines has increased substantially over the last 10 years. However, the volume of data and analytical capability has been negatively correlated to equipment productivity for at least the last seven years. In simple terms, as the volume of data has increased equipment performance has declined. Table (2010) tells us that ?The calamity of the information age is that the toxicity of data increases much faster than its benefits?. More data does not guarantee improving productivity; but more data is also not the cause of declining productivity. Similarly, when equipment performance does start to improve, (it must ? there really is no option if mines want to remain competitive), it will not be the data nor analytics which causes it; it will be the people using the resources at their disposal; including the data. Data and analytics can help if the toxicity of the data can be managed. The simplest form of business improvement using data is benchmarking. The objective of benchmarking is to understand and evaluate the current position of a process in relation to ?best practice? and to identify areas and means of performance improvement. The application of benchmarking involves four key steps: (1) Analyze and understand in detail existing processes; (2) Analyze and understand the processes of others; (3) Compare your own performance with that of the others analyzed; and (4) Design and implement the changes necessary to close the performance gap(s). There are however, many in the mining industries who have shunned equipment benchmarking because they believe that, ?every mine is a pilot?. In other words, the differences between mine operations make comparisons between them of little value. This paper will present a valid approach to benchmarking equipment performance and reliability, accounting for the differences and similarities between operations, producing a result which can be used to add value to mines around the world.

As part of the British Steel Corporation?s development plan during the 1970?s, it was decided to concentrate its bulk steelmaking processes based on the BOS at 4 major Works with access to deepwater ore terminals, for the supply of high-grade imported ores. These 4 sites were at: - 1. Rarenscraig Works in Scotland where the ore terminal would be hilt at Hunterston on the west coast some 50 miles away. Bavenscraig was already an integrated Works but suffered from having to discharge ore 27 Glasgow tenxinus on the River Clyde, which could only accommodate vessels up to 25,000 tonnes. In the future, ore was to be unloaded at Runterston and shipped by a rail-link into Ravenscraig, The new ore terminal would have the potential to unload vessels up to 300,000 tonnes. - 2. Port Talbot Works in south Vales where the existing harbour was developed to discharge large ore carriers. This again was an existing Integrated Works and the benefits of the new harbour also applied to Llanwern Works which was another integrated Works some 50 dies to the east, which would now receive ore from Port Talbot.

"SUMMARY The Hachinoshiri tunnel is a 2,469 m long two-lane road tunnel on the Chubu-Odan Expressway. Since more than 70% of the total tunnel length consists of low strength rock masses the competence factor of which is less than 1.0, it is expected that a self standing span cannot be achievable because of no ground arch to be established. The tunnel was thus designed with tunnel support patterns forming multi-arc early ring closure that can develop the load-carrying capacity estimated from the exerted earth pressure, Po, which can result from the competence factor, cf. The tunnel support pattern was selected based on the competence factor at tunnel face, then the subsequent tunnel support patterns were determined with reference to the monitoring data. The tunnel construction adopted full-face excavation accompanied by early ring closure using a 330 kW road header. The proposed construction methods at this tunnel site have turned out ensuring tunnelling in massive squeezing rock, so that they can be verified as reasonable tunnelling technologies, clarifying the relationship between the characteristics of the mechanical behaviour of the tunnel and its design parameters. INTRODUCTION The presence of highly weathered mudstone having the competence factor less than 1.0 where the tunnel became unstable with the early ring closure having the distance to early ring closure, Lf, of 6 meters, resulting in difficulty in maintaining the inner section of the tunnel, prompted a substantial amount of high strength double support and replacing of the tunnel support (Sato et al., 2015). Based on the mechanical characteristics learned from the construction, the mechanical stability of multi-arc tunnels was investigated using 3D FDM analyses with respect to the ratio of the radius for early ring closure, r3/r1, and the distance to early ring closure, Lf, so that tunnel support patterns for early ring closure can be established in terms of the competence factor, of, which was employed for a 725 m long section. Consequently the tunnel support patterns for early ring closure which can be determined from the competence factor became applicable to tunnel construction. The relationship between the characteristics of the mechanical behaviour of the tunnel and its mechanical parameters was also clarified. The early ring closure method adopted ensured tunnelling in massive squeezing rock, verifying its effectiveness in stabilizing the tunnel."

The purpose of this paper is to bring to your attention the various kinds of high performance graphites available today, their characteristics and possible applications. These materials are products of a proprietary high temperature technology developed by Superior Graphite Company. We feel we have only begun to tap the potential of this technology and the utilization of the resulting products. During the course of the paper, we shall investigate high purity, high performance graphites made from raw materials such as mined natural graphites, synthetic graphites and petroleum derivatives. We shall define their characteristics and resulting benefits to current applications, along with applications currently under development. It is our desire to stimulate speculation and development of current high performance graphites and their applications as well as ideas for new high performance products and applications. First, a little background about the process. The technology was developed through a concentrated R&D effort which culminated in 1976 in the construction of a unique furnace capable of continuously processing tonnage quantities of granular carbons at temperatures in excess of 2,500 degrees C. This process is capable of refining various carbonaceous raw materials, including natural graphites, to levels of purity and consistency that were previously unattainable in commercial quantities. Carbon contents in excess of 99.9% are currently being produced on a continuous flow-through basis. Since beginning operation in 1977, this plant, located in Hopkinsville, KY, has been expanded in stages to its present capacity of producing over 45,000 tons of purified graphites and graphitic carbons per year. In addition to the purification process, the technology used allows the introduction of selected elements into the carbon/graphite structure to provide additional benefits. Elements of interest include boron, silicon, copper, iron and rare earths. The characteristics of and applications for some of these products will be discussed later.

The expansion in gold production in the Carlin &apos;Trend over the last few years has been one of staggering proportion. To increase gold production while minimizing capital requirements and providing for the safe and efficient mining and processing of ores has required a tremendous effort by the Mine Engineering group at Newmont Gold. This paper discusses the organizational changes implemented to effectively deal with a full range of engineering problems and how the Newmont Gold Mine Engineering group dealt with these problems. Specially developed computer software and their applications will be explained. Improvements in the techniques used in converting geologic resources into reserves, and in scheduling the mining of multiple pits to feed multiple processing facilities, as well as ore control procedures are presented. Current mine engineering practices are discussed.

Due to improvements in the safety of other aspects of mining (primarily in roof control), haulage related accidents, particularly rail haulage accidents, are about to become the most common category of hazards causing death and injuries to underground coal miners. The major causes of these accidents are collisions between vehicles, men caught between rib and trip or between cars, derailments, and runaway cars. Such hazards can be greatly reduced if the motorman has the capability to selectively couple and uncouple cars from the cab of the locomotive, to transmit braking intelligence to the coupled cars, to determine if the trip is intact, and if brakes are automatically applied in any uncoupled car. These capabilities can be provided through an improved coupler system, designed and built by Foster-Miller Associates under a Bureau of Mines contract. Early in the program, a survey of rail haulage patents and literature was conducted. Manufacturers of couplers, mine cars and braking systems were contacted and information relevant to the remote control mine haulage application was collected. From this information evolved a working specification and a design concept. The key elements of the specification, shown in Table I, are the result of a detailed tradeoff study and considerable thought given to the specific problems encountered in the mining environment. A brief explanation of each element is as follows: Automatic Coupling - The couplers operate similarly with most already in underground use - they latch together when a trip is backed into a car intended for coupling. Remote Uncoupling - From the locomotive, the motorman can decide how many cars are to be uncoupled, operate the appropriate controls, and the desired coupler is opened.

INTRODUCTION The problems involved with moving millions of tons of rock are being addressed by nationally recognized tunnel contractors who have converged in Chicago over the past 5 years. This wealth of expertise has been needed to meet the risk and challenge of constructing the world&apos;s largest network of underground tunnels which in turn has required a dramatic advance in the art and science of tunneling. These pioneers, through innovation, adaptation, and hard work, have eliminated the one major concern of The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago - how to move 8 million tons of rock. The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) serves 122 municipalities covering 866 square miles in Cook County, Illinois. Of these cities, towns, and villages, 53 have combined sewer systems. On an average of once every four days, these systems overflow about 4 million gallons of combined sewage and rainwater into the area&apos;s rivers and canals. The overflows occur at approximately 640 outfall locations of which 10% are owned by the MSDGC, with the remainder of the points belonging to various other municipal bodies. All those who own these "point" sources of pollution are in violation of Illinois State and Federal regulations. To enable its member municipalities to come into compliance with State and Federal law, the MSDGC is implementing its Tunnel And Reservoir Plan (TARP). TARP is a regional solution to the problem of combined sewer overflow in the metropolitan Chicago area.
