Grupo Acera, HYLSA originated in 1942 when Hojalata y Lamina began operations to supply steel strip for the Cuauhtémoc Brewery, the parent company. Production began in April, 1943 with growth accelerated because of World War II. By 1948 the company was producing its own steel from electric furnaces charged with scrap iron. Further expansion was hampered by the fluctuations in availability, price and quality of scrap iron. As a result, a search was made for a suitable process to enable HYLSA to satisfy its need for a reliable source of feed for its steel-making facilities. Their relatively low iron requirements at the time did not justify the very high capital investments required using the conventional blast furnace method. Processes which by-passed the blast furnaces were very much in their infancy and were not commercially tested. HYLSA then undertook an investigation of the direct reduction processes, knowing full well that much larger companies in other countries had investigated several processes but their work had not established a trend toward direct reduction or any particular process. However, after much effort and persistence HYLSA arrived at a process which suited their conditions. By using Mexican iron ore and natural gas they developed the now well-known H. y L. Process to produce sponge iron. Concurrent with the start of investigations which led to the H. y L. Process, HYLSA began an exploration program for a suitable source of iron ore. Thus in 1951, Cia. Many disputes related to environmental issues in mining are resolved through often-antagonistic negotiations in a regulatory context or through litigation. These approaches are certainly the best choices for resolving certain disputes. However, just as no single remediation technology is the right fit for every site, so no single dispute resolution process is the best choice for every situation. This paper introduces a range of dispute resolution alternatives (from collaborative decision making through mediation, arbitration, and litigation). Especially when money is tightest, cost-effective dispute resolution(and the outcomes that can accompany it) can have an impact on the bottom line.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines applied process mineralogy to investigate a lead and zinc deposit located near Story Creek, Colville Mining District, Alaska. Mineralization is hosted by the Kayak Shale in veins, veinlets, and breccia. Sphalerite and galena, with supergene anglesite, occur in symmetrical quartz veins and between breccia clasts. The study sample analyzed 2.11 percent Pb, 5.37 percent Zn, 0.014 percent Cu, and 1.2 oz/ton Ag. Analyses of crushed products showed that 33 percent of the sample weight, and more than 50 percent of the Pb and 65 percent of the Zn, are in the minus 850 µ m fraction. Liberated grains of sphalerite and galena were found in crushed products finer than 300 µ m. Beneficiation tests indicate the material is amenable to processing by traditional gravity and flotation techniques.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Sur- vey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. Comingling filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailingsdominated mixture is a mine waste management strategy that has the potential to create geotechnically and geochemically stable landforms. Potentially acid-generating (PAG) waste rock can be sequestered within a filtered tailings matrix to enhance water retention and decrease hydraulic conductivity relative to a waste rock pile, potentially minimizing acid rock drainage (ARD). Enhanced water retention can reduce oxygen ingress limiting oxidation and resultant acid generation. Reduced hydraulic conductivity can slow inward percolation and outward drainage. In dry climates, the tailings matrix can hold precipitation near the ground surface accessible to evaporation and transpiration, thereby decreasing percolation. This paper presents an evaluation of comingled filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailings-dominated mixture (termed GeoWaste herein) and illustrates that ARD can be reduced under field conditions in a subtropical–highland climate.

"The mines of the future present a host of challenges, which may appear exciting or daunting, depending on one’s perspective. Whether some sectors of the public recognize it or not, the demand for raw resources is not going away any time soon. In fact, it is rising, as the global population grows, urbanizes and attempts to steadily increase quality of life. Yet, at the same time that much of the highly developed world is calling for greener goods, reduced consumption and cleaner production, in other areas there are cries for clean water and sanitation, consistent energy supply, access to health care and education, personal security and support for basic human rights. The balancing act for sustainable development of our global society is, indeed, precarious and the mining community is a key player. Fortunately, many industry members have accepted this role and the responsibility to provide leadership and a solid foundation for progress. Looking ahead, we need new generations of leaders, including many mine engineers who are ready to tackle all sorts of complex problems.There are tremendous needs just for technological innovations. Increasingly tough deposits will require that the industry continues to expand scale toward “mega pits” and “super caves;” fully develop unconventional recovery techniques like in situ leaching and gasification or deep-sea extraction and seriously consider off-earth endeavors. Such work will take entirely autonomous equipment, novel separations, processing and recycling methods, and systems that can withstand extreme physical conditions, just to name a few. It will also take a level of systems integration never-before seen in the mining industry, complete with big data issues, sophisticated predecitve analytics and modeling efforts and cyber-security challenges.Moreover, increasingly complex environmental problems will require creative solutions. Addressing issues like pollution control across multiple media, emerging contaminants, optimal management of wastes, selective mining and shared use of resources between mine operations and surrounding communities and ecosystems are among the top priorities. Really, a complete paradigm shift must occur, such that the focus is on overall improvement of environmental conditions, rather than minimization of impacts. A similar shift will be required in the social realm. How can miners be safer and healthier on-site and off? How can the industry contribute to communities such that they are better off, now and longterm, for having a mine next door? How can artisanal mining practices be transformed to also contribute to sustainable development? How can the industry’s work be a factor in increasing economic and political stability? How can the public understanding of raw resources and the need for mining enterprises be improved?Given the coming challenges, there is no doubt that the mine engineers of the future will need highly diverse skillsets — meshing traditional and contemporary competencies to a degree not previously considered in mining, or most others fields. To be sure, the scope and scale of mining projects make them wholly different than most other engineering work, aside from perhaps the largest civil and urban development projects. While on-the-job experience will continue to be essential, formal education programs (i.e., at post-secondary institutions) must lay critical groundwork."

Environmental degradation due to abandoned quarries is an international problem, more intense when these sites are found in urban or suburban zones, in environmentally sensitive areas or are visible from sites of special interest. Rehabilitation solutions applied worldwide, range from simple relief restoration and planting to more sophisticated site exploitation in order to serve specific social needs. The elaboration of rational rehabilitation plans for every site presupposes deep knowledge and comparative evaluation of all the parameters of the problem. In this paper, a methodological approach of rehabilitation solutions for abandoned quarry sites is elaborated, based on domestic and international experience and practice. Solutions are grouped in eight main categories. In every category the framework of prerequisites and confinements (environmental, technical, social, economic, legal) for their application in Greek quarry site is investigated. A comparative assessment of alternative restoration solutions is introduced, using tools supplied by environmental economics, cost-benefit analysis, G.I.S. and multi-criteria analysis and follows in two stages: 1) Establishment of a set of criteria aiming at a priority list for a number of quarry sites located in a geographical or administrative district. 2) Assessment of alternative solutions for every single quarry from the previous priority list for the selection of the most adequate using technical, economical, social and environmental criteria.

Nonspecific airway hyperresponsiveness is a central feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has been associated with atopy in the presence of environmental exposures such as smoking. Coal miners may develop emphysema and lung function decrements related to their dust exposure. To investigate the roles of airway responsiveness and atopy in these effects, we evaluated the relationships among smoking, a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis, and airway responsiveness (AR) in a group of underground bituminous coal miners and nonmining controls. All subjects had a normal baseline percent predicted FEV1. Increased airway responsiveness was defined as a 15% or greater decrease in FEV1 following methacholine inhalation. 85 miners (45%) and 99 controls (46%) were current smokers, 59 miners (31%) and 55 controls (26%) were lifetime nonsmokers; former smokers were excluded from further analysis. Overall, 25% of 144 miners included in this analysis had increased AR, as opposed to 29% of 155 controls. Thirty-seven percent of both miners and controls had a history of seasonal rhinitis. Significantly fewer miners (15%) had a history of hay fever compared to controls (25%, p< 0.05). Figure 1 shows the prevalence of increased airway responsiveness in miners and controls in association with hay fever. In both smoking and non smoking miners the presence of a hay fever history was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with a higher prevalence of increased AR. Little effect was seen in smoking (p = 0.827) and nonsmoking (p = 0.940) controls. Figure 2 shows a similar higher prevalence of increased AR associated with symptoms of seasonal rhinitis in the mining group. This was significant (p < 0.01) only in the smoking miners. No effect was noted in the controls. These data suggest that the association of a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis symptoms with increased airway responsiveness may be more common in coal mining, compared to non-dusty occupations. Although the implication of these data are unclear, further study of miners with a history of hay fever or seasonal rhinitis is warranted. Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (Goldstrike) operates a six circuit (train) pressure oxidation plant for the pretreatment of gold bearing sulfide ores. The property is located 27 miles north of Carlin, Nevada. Since the commissioning and start-up of the first circuit in 1990 until the present total plant availabilities have exceeded 90%. The discussion that follows will detail the maintenance practices employed to consistently achieve this goal.

In an extremely competitive mining industry, onsite experience is a big advantage. Mining education at the universities is mostly focused on theoretical studies without a possibility of practical training in mining sites. Hence, experimental mines suitable for practical education are needed to provide a platform for systematic research and education in industrial scale and for training in real mining conditions. Yet, this kind of mine sites is rare worldwide. Thus, a new educational research project, namely MINETRAIN is introduced in this paper evaluating the transition of the Pyhäsalmi mine in Central Finland from an active base metal mine to a research, educational and training underground facility. The uniqueness of MINETRAIN compared to other test mine programs is that the existing state‐of‐art infrastructure in Pyhäsalmi enables research and training facilities among all disciplines related to the overall mine value chain. Though all the above sound interesting in the context of research and education purposes, in practice Pyhäsalmi will have to become an experimental mine that can be sustainable in the future. Accordingly, a prefeasibility study is being conducted and some preliminary results are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION Despite being a field of studies that requires practical knowledge and experience, mining engineering education follows the same pattern in most mining universities around the world; consisting of theoretical courses and laboratory-based practical modules (Mischo, 2015). The possibility of having practical training in real mining conditions on actual mine sites or processing plants is limited to none, while the only contact that undergraduate students have with mining operations during their time of studies is usually through short-time internships or visits in the context of educational trips. Yet, real integration between universities and the mining industry may be scarce, which does not help students to observe the actual processes, and thus understand the whole picture of mining operations. Indirect practical training is also possible nowadays that technology is shifting from mechanical to digital, and the use of virtual reality -in the context of Mining 4.0- can provide additional experience to the learning process. However, virtual reality is limited to the visual impression and is also limited in actions (Binder et al, 2018). In any case, when there is not a proper pragmatic view of how the different disciplines link to each other and especially if there is a lack of communication, unfortunately the results could be seen at a later stage in the mines as a poor performance of professionals and workers. Another major challenge for educating specialists in the mining sector is that experimental mines suitable for practical education, where the skills and know-how could be developed and/or enhanced are rare worldwide. Such research and educational (R&E) facilities are practically former metal ore mines that have been transformed into experimental sites. Besides being limited in number, not all facilities of this kind serve both a research and educational purpose.

Rare earths were not mined in the United States in 2008. However, processing of intermediate rare-earth concentrates continued throughout the year at the Mountain Pass Mine in California. Consumption of refined rare-earth products increased. U.S. rare earth imports were primarily from China, with lesser amounts, in decreasing order, from France, Hong Kong, Japan, Austria and Russia. The United States imported 100 percent of its supply of yttrium metal and compounds primarily from China. United States In 2008, lanthanide concentrates were processed by Chevron Mining Inc. (previously Molycorp Inc.) at its mine site at Mountain Pass, CA. Chevron Mining sold its entire holdings in the rare earths mine to Molycorp Minerals LLC in September and operations continued at the site through-out 2008. Major uses for these mineral commodities were in automotive catalytic converters, petroleum fl uid-cracking catalysts, permanent magnets, glass-polishing compounds, ceramics, metal-alloying additives, phosphors and recharge-able batteries. Three domestic companies produced and sold lanthanide intermediate concentrates and refined products. Chevron Mining sold its interests in the Mountain Pass Mine to Molycorp Minerals LLC on Sept. 30, 2008. Molycorp Minerals LLC is an investment company owned by Resource Capital Fund IV L.P., Pegasus Partners IV, LP, The Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Traxys North America LLC, Carint Group LLC and Mark Smith. The Molycorp operation previously mined the rare earth fluocarbonate mineral bastnäsite by hard-rock surface methods, and the mine remained on care and maintenance in 2008. Molycorp maintained significant stocks of bastnäsite concentrates, intermediate concentrates and high-purity rare earth compounds at its operations at Mountain Pass. In October 2007, Chevron Minerals completed phase one of its three-stage plan and restarted the rare earth separation plant at Mountain Pass. The company also processed intermediate rare earth concentrates from existing stocks during the first three quarters of 2008. Molycorp Minerals LLC maintained production in the last quarter of the year. The mine at Mountain Pass has been closed since 1998. Future plans are to restart processing of stockpiled bastnäsite concentrates followed by reopening of the mine.

Each year, haul truck accidents account for a large portion of mining injuries and fatalities. To better understand why these accidents continue to occur, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) utilized a cognitive task analysis methodology to identify the user requirements of surface haul truck operators and assess differences in perceptions between operators, managers, health and safety professionals, trainers, and maintenance personnel. Additionally, researchers used the critical decision method to focus on better understanding the cognitive demands, decision-making, and problem solving during nonroutine incidents. The preliminary results of this study identify and explore themes within the broad categories of hazards, skills & expertise, and training and provide detailed accounts of nonroutine incidents such as near-misses, loss of control, and collisions. These accounts reveal insights into operator decision making and event progressions that can then be used to build more realistic training scenarios and address hidden hazards and root causes of these incidents. These results, along with potential solutions offered by study participants, can inform future research and help identify creative interventions that can be used by mine operators to address haul truck safety issues

Reasonable mining-retention ratio (ratio of room width to pillar width) is vital to recovery rate and stope stability in underground mining of solid potassium salt deposits. Based on the engineering background of a solid underground potassium salt mine in Khammouan Province, characteristics of the plastic zone of the pillar, and the variation of recovery rate and stope stability under different mining-retention ratio conditions are discussed. The results show that compared with current room width (8 m) and pillar width (10 m), the optimization method of improvement of stope stability. The research results are helpful to recover as much solid potash resources as possible under the premise of ensuring the stability of stope.

Bentonite collected from Nowshera (Pakistan) was treated with NaCl, and the < 2-μm clay fractions were separated by sedimentation process. The textural changes in NaCl treated purified bentonite were compared with raw and physically purified sample. It was detected that the NaCl-treated purified bentonite and the sample purified by simple sedimentation, respectively, consist of sodium-montmorillonite and calcium-montmorillonite as a major clay mineral. The honeycombed-type morphology was observed for both the purified samples; however, the particles of NaCl treated purified bentonite were relatively in a compact form. The particle sizes of both the purified samples were found considerably smaller. The high volume percent of the fine particles was noticed in the NaCl-treated purified bentonite. This attributed that the sodium exchange has a valuable impact on the bentonite dispersion in aqueous media during particle size measurement. The relatively high mesopore area/volume and micropore area/volume and specific surface area (SSA) were detected in purified samples. The NaCl-treated purified sample showed relatively high mesopores area/volume than the sample obtained by simple sedimentation. These changes seem to be originated from either high montmorillonite contents and/or the smaller particle size, which might be produced after the layer rearrangement during the interlayer cation replacement by Na+ ions. The large SSA and high porosity of purified samples particularly the NaCl-treated bentonite suggest their potential use as adsorbents, catalysts, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.

A recent Nevada Gold Mines research program focused on pressure oxidation pre-treatment of a Carlin-type double refractory ore from the Turquoise Ridge Mine. The research team found that both arsenian pyrite and carbonaceous matter were highly oxidized within an hour at 300 °C using a bench-top autoclave reactor and that the gold recovery from the residues after cyanide/carbon-in-leach approached the technical limit set by the amount of gold encapsulated by silicate minerals. Although the 60-min pre-treatment at 300 °C yields robust performance when treating a whole ore, copper additives can catalyze the oxidation rate of carbonaceous matter and reduce the residence time needed at elevated temperature. Certain gangue minerals are susceptible to dissolution in acidic solutions at 300 °C, and this may cause poor gold recovery. This recovery challenge is mitigated by keeping free acid in the discharge solution below a key threshold.

Rock fragmentation size distribution is often used as an important index to account for the blasting effect because it directly affects the subsequent loading, transportation, and secondary crushing. Due to the mismatching of explosive and rock wave impedance, high boulder yield often occurs which affects the blasting effect. In this study, methods of measuring rock acoustic impedance, rock strength point loading, and detonation wave velocity have been used to obtain more accurate input parameters. Then, in the watershed image segmentation technique, the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann and Rosin-Rammler distribution functions have been used to analyze and quantitatively describe the rock fragmentation size distribution in the existing muck-pile. Finally, taking the rock properties, explosive performance, blasting parameters, and system characteristic variable into consideration, support vector machine (SVM) regression model has been analyzed on the learning and prediction of samples. The results show that SVM has a good prediction accuracy, high precision, and strong generalization ability. The optimized matching coefficient of rock and explosive wave impedance K ranges from 2.50 to 2.58 times. This study has developed a series of simple, accurate methods for rock properties analysis, detonation wave velocity measurement, and muck-pile model image processing, and a basis for predicting and evaluating rock fragmentation size distribution and optimizing the matching coefficient before carrying out a blasting operation.

"Since the year 2000, 59 miners have lost their lives to explosions occurring in underground coal mines in the US. More accurately, those explosions were methane ignitions that propagated through the mines due to coal dust involvement; despite current explosion prevention standards. There are 4 basic strategies employed to manage the risk of coal dust explosions in many other coal mining countries around the world: removal of the coal dust, wetting of the coal dust to prevent it from becoming airborne, mixing of the coal dust with stone dust to increase the total incombustible content, and explosion activated barriers which make the entire roadway inert. However, American standards only mandate the first 3 of these 4 methods. It is possible that US coal mine safety measures could benefit from the implementation of the 4th method, the use of explosion barriers. This paper will discuss differences/similarities in barrier regulations used in other countries, as well as some potential difficulties with adapting a stone dust bag barrier system to US underground coal mines. Also, details and feedback gathered from two operating mine site trial barrier installations will be shared.INTRODUCTION Since the year 2000, 59 miners have lost their lives to explosions occurring in underground coal mines in the United States (US); 29 miners were killed at the Upper Big Branch mine in 2010, 5 at the Darby Mine No. 1 in 2006, 12 at the Sago Mine also in 2006, and 13 at the Jim Walter No. 5 Mine in 2001.[14] To be more accurate, the explosions that killed those miners were methane ignitions that propagated through the mines due to coal dust involvement.[18, 19, 20, 21] These deaths occurred despite current explosion prevention strategies, standards, and regulatory oversight. This poses the question, can more be done in the US to prevent coal dust explosions and their widespread damage. In review of current practices and regulations from several large coal mining countries, a disparity in prevention strategies arose. The main difference between the US and other countries was that the US does not encourage, mandate, or regulate the use of explosion barrier systems as an additional coal dust explosion mitigation measure. This raised many questions. First and foremost was whether or not the US coal mining industry and its miners could benefit, in terms of safety and fatality prevention, from the implementation of the explosion barrier systems that are used in other countries. Furthermore, are there significant differences between the coal mines in countries where explosion barriers are used and US coal mines, which would preclude the system from being adapted and implemented in the US? Also, what are the similarities and differences in explosion barrier systems, use, and regulations between other countries that use them?"

Affected by the disturbance of blasting activities, deformation instability and rock dynamic disasters are prone to occur in deep hard rock roadways. Thus, it is particularly necessary to understand the failure behavior of rocks and roadways under dynamic loads. In this study, a series of impact loading tests were carried out on sandstone samples with and without a circular cavity by a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test system. The mechanical properties and energy evolution of the samples were systematically investigated, and the effect of cavity size was analyzed. The results showed that the presence of the cavity in the samples weakens the dynamic compressive strength by more than 10%, and the peak strain and brittleness are also reduced to varying degrees. Under dynamic loading, spalling cracks occur first on the roof and floor of the cavity, and then different numbers of shear cracks are formed on the sample diagonals. The eventual shear failure mode is the result of the connection of the shear cracks and the cavity. As the cavity radius increases, the dissipated energy density and fractal dimension both grow accordingly, leading to smaller and smaller rock fragments. The dynamic failure behavior of the circular cavity can be well explained based on the dynamic stress distribution law. Overall, this study can provide a reference for the study of the mechanism of rock burst in deep roadways.

Large volumes of ventilation and climatic data including air volume, barometric pressure, dry bulb temperature, and relative humidity were collected at active underground precious metal mines in Nevada, which allows for the determination of wet bulb temperature and other key parameters. Through the utilization of neural networks, the wet bulb temperature at the bottom of the intake shafts is predicted, while taking into account the “thermal flywheel effect” (TFE). Wet bulb temperature is one of the most important climatic parameters to model and understand because it significantly affects the work conditions and the cooling capacity of the ventilating air. The accurate prediction of the dry bulb and the wet bulb temperatures at the bottom of intake shafts is critical when assessing the climatic conditions in future underground mines and deciding onwhether a cooling system is needed to assure adequate working conditions throughout themine. By utilizing accurate predictions of wet bulb temperatures and other climatic parameters, mine personnel will be safer as reported by Bluhm et al. (2003), and a more accurate ventilation design can be achieved resulting in major cost savings for underground mines.

Anomalous geologic or stress conditions ahead of the longwall face can cause great harm to both the individual miner and the mining operation as a whole. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been developing seismic tomography techniques to image the panel ahead of the face. This paper presents the results of a field effort in which a 60-m (200-ft) segment of a longwall panel containing a fault zone was surveyed daily as the face approached. Stress distribution, geologic structure, and dynamic elastic properties within the panel were plotted and compared to static laboratory measurements. The surveys successfully imaged an anomalous stress concentration, likely influenced by the presence of the fault zone. The calculated dynamic physical properties generally agreed with laboratory measurements.
