Numerous reactor designs for biological sulfate reduction have been reported. Fluidized-bed bioreactors (FBR) can efficiently retain biomass and allow high mass transfer and reaction rates. This work reviews the development of various sulfate-reducing FBR processes for treating acidic metal- and sulfate-containing waters and recovering metals from bioleaching liquors. The FBR process performance was evaluated with continuous flow experiments under various operational conditions: fluidization rates, influent pH values, metal, sulfate and salt concentrations, hydraulic retention times, electron and carbon sources, and temperatures. Substrate utilization and sulfide inhibition kinetics were determined with batch FBR-kinetic experiments. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was used to predict the performance of the FBR. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were characterized in FBRs with molecular and culture-based approaches with the aim to gain a better understating of the bioprocesses. Based on the studies, FBRs are well suited for the combined removal of metals, acidity and sulfate from water.

A multi-layer gangue roof of a steeply dipping coal seam with a large mining height face area was analyzed using physical simulation, numerical simulation, theoretical analysis, and field measurement methods to evaluate the roof deformation and the mechanisms associated with the instability of the hard gangue and soft coal interlayer. The results indicated that the first weighting step of the multi-gangue roof was larger than that of a non-gangue roof, but periodic weighting steps were similar. The overburden collapse height was lower in the multi-gangue roof than in the non-gangue roof due to the buffering and supporting function of the collapsed gangue. Moreover, the failure of the coal interlayer was the key factor in the collapse of the multi-layer gangue. A mechanical model was established for the hard gangue and soft coal interlayer based on a revised Prandtl squeezing theory. The limited load of the interlayer and maximum resistance of the shield support was thusmodeled. The maximum resistance of the support increased with the dip angle of the seam and burial depth. It also increased with the interlayer thickness at thicknesses below 2.75 m. It reached a peak when the interlayer thickness was between 2.75 and 3 m and exhibited a decreasing trend when the thickness was greater than 3 m. The results were confirmed using physical simulation and a field test. Certain measures were proposed to control the stability of the gangue roof, including zoning control of the mining height and resistance and advancing the support while maintaining roof contact, thus ensuring the integrity of the support and surrounding rock system.

The Rapidex continuous drill and blast tunneling concept utilizes a unique spiral blasting pattern that permits efficient performance with relatively small single shots, while at the same time directing major blast fragments at right angles to the tunnel axis. The concept's self-shielding geometry permits the design of a lightly shielded machine that can stay at the tunnel face firing frequent small blasts to provide rapid, virtually continuous advance. This paper describes Phase III of the development program (supported under Bureau of Mines contract H0252047) in which the "front end" of the machine?drilling loading, and shooting components, together with the shield--was fabricated and field tested underground at the White Pine Copper mine, Michigan. One of the major accomplishments of the Phase III effort was to develop a fully remote controlled loading and initiation system in which explosive slurry is pushed, through a hose into the blasthole by a small water-driven piston carrying the blasting cap. The cap is ignited via an induction coil just prior to entry into the borehole, after which a delay permits complete -withdrawal and shielding of the loading hose. The ultimate objective of the present Bureau-sponsored program is to evaluate the feasibility of mechanizing hard rock mining operations, such as development to a point where drilling, loading, shooting, and mucking can proceed simultaneously and result in increased productivity.

Inflation and burgeoning costs are two among many factors which have generated a new surge of interest in "fringe benefits" (sometimes referred to as "supplementary remuneration" or "supplementary compensation"). Other specialized forms of compensation ("perks", in the vernacular) such as company cars, windowed offices, etc., which also are the subjects of current study, are outside the scope of this paper. For businesses, interest in fringe benefits is based on concern for employees? welfare, compliance with government requirements, and an increasingly burdensome impact on bottom lines. In 1980, according to Fred D. Lindsey in the October 1980 issue of Nation's Business, employee benefits will cost American employers an estimated $420 billion. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, "some fringes!" Indeed, few if any administrators consider employee benefits as fringes. Employee benefits impact other major areas of a company's operations as well. As listed by Beadle (1980), these areas include employee relations, collective bargaining, short-term costs, long-range funding, manpower planning, compliance with legislation, taxation for the company and for the employee, corporate image in the community, competitiveness for staff, communications, administration, claims cost containment, etc., etc.

The High Density Sludge Process was originally developed by Bethlehem Steel Corporation for use on acid mine drainage and diluted waste pickle liquor discharges requiring continuous chemical treatment systems. This work began in the early 1970s and was first put into practical use around 1973. To date there are approximately 15 operating systems which have been installed on mine drainage in the United States, and another 10 systems worldwide. Dense Sludge is an innovative and improved method for treating acidic metal bearing streams in a manner which minimizes the volumetric generation of sludge for disposal. The technology utilizes a sludge recycle process which forms particles that have a low affinity for water, unlike conventional metal hydroxide solids which contain tightly bound interstitial waters. Typical acid mine drainage streams contain high sulfate concentrations which combine with calcium ions in lime based treatment systems to form gypsum crystals. The physical form of this gypsum is radically altered when the Dense Sludge process is utilized compared to the form generated in conventional lime treatment systems. The characteristics of the metals particles are also changed in this process, as the metal hydroxides are converted to metal oxides. Slides No. 1 and No.2 show scanning electron micrographs of conventional and densified sludges illustrating these differences. The magnification used was 300X. The dense sludge particles settle faster, dewater more readily, are more easily pumped, and hold much less water than conventional precipitates. In some cases, because the metal content of the sludge is more concentrated, it can be economically recovered.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Not only is 1971 the Centennial Year of the AIME, but it also marks the One Hundredth Anniversary of the United States Portland Cement Industry. On September 26th in 1871 David O. Saylor of Allentown, Pennsylvania, received his patent Numbered 119,413 for the manufacture of portland cement. "Cement" had been used in the United States before that. This was, however, natural cement - a direct product of rocks as found in nature, usually burned at low temperatures in open kilns. During the early 1800s this natural cement played an important role in such projects as the building of the Erie Canal. It was only after the Civil War that small amounts of high priced portland cement was imported from Europe. The successful use of this material in construction led to Saylor's experiments and subsequent patent for the manufacture of a scientifically controlled product in this country. These one hundred years have witnessed four major "ages" of cement . . . three of them occurring in the last quarter century since World War Two. The first age was the "Age of Development", a seventy-year period which saw the growth of cement and its concrete end uses as major construction materials. Next followed a period called the "Age of Demand" when, after the war, cement became in short supply relative to large building requirements. In effect a cement shortage existed. The decade of the Sixties proved to be the "Age of Reaction", with its courses of action coming in response to the problems that arose when the industry's expansion programs provided too much capacity. Today cement, and the concrete industries, find themselves entering the "Age of Reason". INTRODUCTION Underground blasting with perimeter damage control can reduce the requirement for loose rock scaling and reduce the risk of ground-fall injury. In previous work Johnson and associates (2010) from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a rock blasting perimeter damage and control design method included in the DRIFT software tool (NIOSH, 2018). This blast design software tool utilizes current methods of perimeter blasting with the added design element of a buffer row coordinated with the perimeter row to reduce perimeter damage. The coordination is in applying one of several blast damage models to calculate the damage extent for each production, buffer, and perimeter blast hole in the design. The calculated damage is then applied to the spacing between the blast holes. The basis of the buffer row design is the practical damage limit and is supported in this paper with computer models of signature blasts and full blast rounds using PFC2D (Itasca Consulting Group, Inc., 2018). Practical damage limit The practical damage radius (Rd) is not to be confused with burden. The practical damage extends toward the burden side and inward into the rock mass. For all practical purposes, the practical damage radius equals one half the burden (Hustrulid, 1999). The maximum extent of radial crack damage around a blast hole (Rcrack) and the maximum extent of radial crushing damage (Rcrush) are illustrated in Figure 1. A “practical” radius of damage (Rd) lies between the crushing limit and the cracking limit. The “practical” damage means that if the rock mass lying outside of the practical damage circle were removed, the rock remaining within the circle would easily break apart. Blast pressure and strain Work by Johnson (2010) and associates included signature blast tests in large concrete blocks. A signature blast test in concrete as exampled by strain data in Figure 2 was designed to monitor the dynamic strain at incremental distances from a single fully coupled blast hole, measure crushing and radial cracking extent by wire-sawing to expose the damage, and relate the damage to overbreak that is common in underground blasting. The initial slope or rising strain as the stress wave passes by the strain gages shows very high strain and strain rates close to the single blast hole. Since the derivative of strain versus time is strain rate, a line tangent to each of the strain curves at the maximum strain rate is drawn and the strain rates identified. The high strain rates were then plotted on a semi-log in Figure 3 to show a linear trend. The strain rate is greater than 100 s-1 within 20 cm from the blast hole for the signature blast experiment. The strain rate at the blast hole wall is projected to be 300 s-1. Figure 4 illustrates the damage in the NIOSH block exposed by a wire saw cut.

"During his presentation at the 2016 George A. Fox Conference about the history of public-private-partnerships (PPP) in the tunneling and underground construction industries in New York, Vincent Tirolo, Jr., told a story about how, as a young engineer in the late 1960s, he and others pooled money to purchase a calculator for $75 that had the ability to perform sine and cosine functions. That was a big deal in those days and would make their job much easier. Oh how far things have come. Tunnel and underground construction engineers can now virtually map out and plan entire projects before the first shovel ever breaks ground. And the machines that are used to build the tunnels have advanced in ways that could not have been imagined 50 years ago.The calculator is just one example of innovation in the industry and on Jan. 26, more than 400 industry professionals attended the George A. Fox Conference at the Graduate Center of New York (CUNY) to learn more about the next innovations, new tunneling technologies and what the future might hold for the industry. The conference included sessions on contracting models, rescue and fire life safety and new technological developments as well as an international project spotlight presentation from Nasri Munfah about the Eurasia Tunnel, connecting the European and Asian sides of Istanbul, Turkey.The project, also known as the Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing project, was named the 2015 Major Tunneling Project of the Year by the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association.The tunnel boring work for the 3,344-m (11,000 ft) long tunnel under the Istanbul Bosphorus Strait was completed in August, heralding a new era in tunneling.Tunnel boring work was launched in April 2014 with a ceremony with then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in attendance. The work was completed on Aug. 22, 2015 with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu participating in the ceremony."

The Quaternary stream sediments of the Diit area, southern Red Sea coast, Egypt, were mineralogically studied for their content of economic heavy minerals. The study area covered approximately 450 km2 and included three main parts: Wadi and Delta Diit, as well as Diit lens. The mineralogical investigation revealed that these sediments contain considerable amounts of placer ilmenite, magnetite, zircon, sphene, apatite, garnet, and rutile. Also present, in minor or trace amounts, are uranothorite, monazite, xenotime, fergusonite, khatyrkite, and gold. The magnetic fractionation tests, supplemented with the XRD and SEM mineral analyses, indicated the presence of Fe-oxide minerals as wuestite, hematite, and maghemite accompanied with magnetite as products for hand magnet separation. Ilmenite separation was carried out using a high intensity magnetic separator at a current of 1 A, while the paramagnetic minerals (e.g., garnet, pyroxene, amphibole, epidote, monazite, xenotime, and fergusonite) were separated as magnetic fraction at a current of 3 A. The non-magnetic minerals (e.g., zircon, apatite and rutile, uranophane, uranothorite, gold, and khatyrkite) were obtained at 3 A current. On a mineralogical and geochemical basis, the present work suggests that Diit stream sediments should be considered as a potential source for Ti, Fe, Zr, Zn, and Cu after the physical upgrading processes for concentrating the minerals carrying the aforementioned economic elements.

"Bull Mountains No. 1 mine of Signal Peak Energy made another success in its 4 Right pre-developed recovery entry on March 23 and 24, 2015, after the first successful cut-through and shield retrieval of 3 Right pre-developed longwall recovery entry in 2014[1]. Under the same geological conditions, the major difference of 4 Right and 3 Right is the 600 psi Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) value of light-weight concrete in 4 Right versus 800 psi in 3 Right. In addition, one more recovery chute was added in 4 Right. The unique geological conditions in this mine include: (1) the low overburden of approximately 200-260 ft, (2) prevalence of roof joints parallel to the face in the sandstone/siltstone dominated overburden, (3) proximity of the Rehder rider seam to the bench Mammoth coal seam, and (4) prompt surface subsidence with the face advancement. The 4 Right recovery entry was 42 ft wide and developed in two stages, 20 ft wide in the inby Phase I, and 22 ft wide in the outby Phase II. The entry roof was reinforced with steel wire mesh/non-metallic recovery mesh, primary bolts, and high-capacity supplemental SUMO cables. After all the support was installed, the entry was completely backfilled with specially designed, cuttable, low-density cement. It took approximately half time to easily cut through the concrete with less dust in 4 Right as compared to the concrete-cut-through time in the 3 Right. The updated study further explored the nature and mechanism of effective roof control approaches in the pre-developed recovery entry of this unique geology mine, aiming at providing the safest working environment for protecting the miners. GEOLOGICAL AND MINING CONDITIONS OF THE RECOVERY ENTRIES Bull Mountains No. 1 mine is located 30 miles north of Billings, Montana, and currently mines bituminous coal from the Mammoth coal seam. The mine employed a conventional recovery face in Panel #1 and pre-developed recovery entries in Panels #2, #3, and #4 (Figure 1). The typical mining and geological conditions are as follows:Overburden Depth The overburden above the Mammoth coal seam in the #1-#4 Right recovery areas is approximately 200-260 ft. This low cover, in combination with specific roof geological features (especially the prevalent roof joints and proximity of rider seam), constitute unique ground movement characteristics when the longwall face advances into the recovery entry if no sufficient roof support is installed."

Personnel at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are studying the technology and applications of salt-gradient solar ponds (see below) for both electrical and thermal energy generation. The brine extraction and processing site operated by the Kerr-McGee Corporation at Searles Lake, California, offers ideal conditions for economic construction of solar ponds. Furthermore, since rising conventional energy costs adversely affect the economic recovery of brine by the present process, this site was selected for a study on the feasibility of integrating the solution mining of trona (Na2CO3?NaHCO3?2H20) in the lower salt with solar ponds for heating. The major emphasis of this study was to determine whether inexpensive thermal energy available at the brine extraction site would be useful in extracting increased mineral value from the resource. The present operation, which involves the simple extraction of the complex brine and its processing at the adjacent plant, is sometimes referred to as solution mining. Since the concept discussed in this paper involves injecting a heated sodium sulfate brine to dissolve carbonate underground, the proposed scheme is referred to as "enhanced" solution mining. The expanding volume of maritime coal transportation is intensifying the problems concerning large vessel service port construction, transshipment and environmental control. The major problem is the transshipment of coal. Customary methods for bulk transfer must be improved and/or new systems developed. Slurry unloading has a key role in the new systems. The present report reviews progress in slurry transportation research which has been done in Japan since the 1960s when large scale experiments for domestic transportation were done. Experiments on the effects of vibration on the slurry cargo and on reslurrying are discussed.

Hydraulic fracturing to precondition the rock mass in high seismic risk environments has great potential. Unfortunately, there are many unanswered questions about how to best implement a hydraulic fracturing program at individual mine sites, and even how to best use our engineering tools to evaluate these plans. To give the hydraulic fracturing field tests at LKAB’s Kiirunavaara Mine the best chance of success, fully-coupled, discontinuum numerical modelling Itasca’s 3DEC code was used together with statistical simulations of the fracture network. For modelling purposes, it was assumed that hydraulic fracturing successfully reduces seismic risk through 1) the creation of hydraulic fractures along a plane at each injection site, and 2) activation of existing discontinuities. A variety of scenarios for the mine were evaluated, which focused on site specific uncertainties (such as the spacing of the pre-existing discontinuities) and practical solutions (such as the hydraulic fracture spacing, selection of injection medium, and hydraulic fracture site location relative to production). The discrete fracture network (DFN) realizations were developed using available statistical data for discontinuities near where hydraulic fracturing was planned.

The Tek Process can produce masonry products such as bricks, roof or wall tiles, and block from virtually any inorganic waste. In the process the aggregate raw materials, portland cement, water and common chemicals are first mixed together; then mechanically subjected to several thousand pound pressure per square inch. This causes a novel chemical reaction between the cement, chemicals and water; producing the "patented" Tek adhesive binder which holds the aggregate together in a stone-like mix. Simultaneously, the desired product shape is formed. The building modules can have strengths of 8000 p.s.i. (pounds per square inch) with completely sound aggregates utilizing air curing for a period of 28 days. With most aggregates, 3000 p.s.i. is achieved within 24 hours. Eventual strengths usually exceed 5000 p.s.i. with almost any raw material. Water absorption ranges from 5-7.5 percent. Both absorption and strength figures are superior to the most rigid of any and all A.S.T.M. specifications for the highest quality bricks. In most locations, the product (when brick shaped is called Tekbrik) can be produced significantly more economically than can comparable grades of clay or other bricks, be- cause almost any inorganic waste materials or pollutant can be used as a raw material. The process results in a lower manufacturing cost as compared to clay bricks; fuel cost to operate a clay kiln represents a substantial portion of the total cost. Capital expenditure for a Tek plant also is lower due to the large investment in clay kilns. Transportation savings also are important, clay brick factories must be very large because the kilns are uneconomical unless they are large. Most bricks are manufactured at the sites of clay deposits in relatively uninhabited areas. The cost of transportation to the job site represents a considerable percentage of the selling price.

Clay slurries are normally dewatered using flocculents like sulfuric acid or aluminum sulfate. This type of flocculation is based on the electrolytic mechanism. For certain clay dewatering applications, this method of flocculation is unsatisfactory. Flocculation, based on the bridging mechanism, using organic polymers has been utilized to overcome such problem situations. This method of flocculation offers solutions not possible by previous methods. Normally these flocculents are used to assist dewatering. In this case, not only is dewatering promoted, but also further processing is assisted by a change in the dilatant character of the filter cake that is formed. Discharge of filter cake is easier, extrusion of filter cake on to conveyor dryer is possible or improved, and heat transfer and drying rates of the extruded filter cake are substantially higher. Both natural and synthetic organic polymers have been utilized for this purpose. Selection, application techniques, and economics are described.

Many of the major international gold mining companies provide data on rates of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as part of their environmental reporting commitments. These data are evaluated by an index defined as the annual GHG emission rate in metric tons, divided by the annual amount of gold produced in grams, and referred to as GHGgold. This paper examines ranges of GHGgold values for a cross section of gold mines as a function of mining method (openpit, underground and combined operation) and ore-processing method (mill, heap leach and combined methods) for reported ranges of operational data, including annual total tons mined, ore processed and gold grade. The evaluation shows that ranges and distributions of rates of GHG emission are approximately similar across different mining methods and ore-processing methods. The data presented in this paper provide the context needed to make comparisons of GHG emissions reported in companies’ annual reports to the ranges reported for the overall gold mining industry.

Discussion by A.E Agnew Strachan's paper summarizes a wealth of data on water-storage dam "incidents" published by USCOLD and ASCE in 1988, together with a review of tailings-dam incidents published by USCOLD in 1994. The data is summarized by text and 11 histograms. The histograms present a useful compilation of these data, although the patterns within the histogram blocks did not survive the Mining Engineering printing process - so their usefulness is impaired. Unfortunately, the text discussion is too cursory and does not highlight the significant relationships among the various causes of the incidents. Four paragraphs of text and Fig. 1 were devoted to water-storage dams, but the discussion is too sketchy, and Fig. 1 is unclear. Important statistics that could be uncovered are: •the total number of dam incidents tabulated were 500+, •earth embankments constituted 73% of those in operation and •incidents related to earth embankments were 75%, of which dam failures accounted for 24%, major repairs accounted for 42% and accidents accounted for 34%. Strachan concluded that "the majority of the dam failures are associated with overtopping (p. 49), and that the majority of incidents are associated with spillway and other facility structures" - although this is difficult to discern from Fig. 1. Confusion regarding Strachan's use of the terms "dam failures" and "incidents" is compounded by his use of "failures" and "accidents" in one paragraph of his Introduction section followed by his use of "incidents" in the next paragraph. Getting to the meat of Strachan's important paper, the tailings-dam incident survey (USCOLD, 1994), the connection between Figs 2 through 11 seems obscure. First, in the four paragraphs of introductory material, one learns that "incidents consisted of failures, accidents, seepage and other incidents of performance that did not meet design criteria" (p. 50). One does learn the helpful caveat that "structures not related to mill tailings were not included in the review" - so that the Buffalo Creek (West Virginia in 1972) and Aberfan (Wales in 1966) coal-mine failures, together with the ongoing metal-mine remediation work at Summitville (Colorado) do not muddy the waters of his paper. The all-too-brief discussion of the data shown in Figs. 3 through 11 (185 dams in USCOLD plus 26 dams in UNEP) reveals the following: •Figure 3: 57% of the incidents (failures and accidents) occurred with dams less than 20-m (66-ft) in height. •Figure 4: 63% of the incidents were due to failures alone (subset of Fig. 3). •Figure 5: Active dams had 82% of the accidents and 93% of the failures. •Figure 6: Types of dams (upstream, water-retention, downstream, centerline and "unknown") separated according to incidents. •Figure 7: Breaks out the incidents in Fig. 6 by failures, accidents and ground water. •Figure 8: Breaks out incidents by type (overtopping, slope stability, earthquake, foundation, seepage, structural, erosion, mine subsidence and "unknown"). •Figure 9: Separates Fig. 8 data into active and inactive dams. •Figure 10: Separates Fig. 9 data into failures and accidents. •Figure 11: Same as Fig. 8, but broken out by tailings-dam type (Fig. 6). Completion of the Hall Street Coal Transfer Terminal in St. Louis marks the beginning of a major shift in the movement of coal to the power generating stations of the Midwest and South Central regions of the United States. The location of the terminal is significant. The 10 million ton- per-year facility is the first high capacity rail-to-barge transfer terminal to be built on the western shore of the Mississippi. This terminal and others to follow will link the massive coal fields of the West with the high coal consuming markets adjacent to the 25,000-mile Inland Waterway System.

Exploration for ore deposits in southeastern Missouri in the 1950's resulted in the important discovery of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955. Further discoveries in the area led to the naming of the Viburnum trend. It has sometimes been referred to as the "New Lead belt" to distinguish it from older lead-producing areas to the east. As presently developed, the "trend" is 35 miles long, running north and south about 50 miles west of the Lead belt. Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined, with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chalcopyrite (copper) and silver recovered as economic by-products. The ore body is as much as 140 feet thick and 1,200 feet wide, and is found in the Bonneterre Dolomite (Upper Cambrian) at depths ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet. Since its discovery many companies have engaged in exploration and several major companies have developed new mines and constructed mills and a smelter in the area. The first mine in the Viburnum trend came on stream in 1960, but as more mines came on stream and others reached capacity, lead production increased to the point that the Southeast Missouri Lead district produced 432,576 tons of lead in 1970 to become the world's largest lead-producing region (Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources, 1971). The Viburnum trend area with its rolling, heavily forested hills and numerous clear running streams is in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. Until the recent development of its mineral resources, the area was sparsely populated and nearly unmarked by the activities of man.
