Metallurgical evaluation of autogenous grinding of Anaconda's Berkeley Pit ores indicated that tonnage throughput increases, at a finer flotation feed size, were possible by converting autogenaus mills to steel ball mills. In addition, initial test work showed that the improved grind resulted in slight recovery gains in subsequent flotation processing.

Within the Pofadder district of Namaqualand, South Africa, economically exploited deposits of bedded barite and zinc-lead-silver-copper sulfides occur in close proximity within highly metamorphosed mid-Proterozoic pre-tectonic para¬gneisses of the Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex (NMC) (figure i). The paragneisses belong to the Bushmanland Group (SACS, 1980) that comprises a relatively straight-forward regional sequence of basal leucogneisses, intermediate mica-sillimanite schists and glassy quartzites, and a mixed upper zone of banded iron formations (BIF), minor marbles, quartz muscovite schists and localised uppermost quartz-pebble conglomerates and amygdaloidal mafic gneisses (Joubert, 1974) (figure ii). The base metal and barite mineralisation occurs in close association with BIFs, generally above the glassy quartzites, although in some cases possibly below them. In the regional context, the Bushmanland Group paragneisses are, to the north, intercalated with and ultimately replaced by meta-volcanic sequences of talc-alkaline affinity (Reid, 1977) belonging to the Orange River Group (SACS, 1980). The metavolcanics are generally of acidic to intermediate composition and show evidence of subaerial formation from 'high altitude shield volcanism' with many acidic ashflow and welded tuff bands, mesocratic and lesser melanocratic lavas and some fanglomerates (Ritter, 1980). To the south and east, the schist/quartzite associations are initially intercalated with and eventually replaced by cordierite gneiss/metacarbonate/biotite gneiss associations of shallow marine affinity (Moore, 1980a). The Bushmanland Group paragneisses appear to represent sedimentary material in the extreme distal portions of a talc-alkaline volcanic environment adjacent to a shallow platform sea.

The interest in using halogens for extracting precious metals from ores has increased due to changes In ore characteristics, environmental concerns and regulations. The rediscovery of halogen leaching capability has been the topic of these and other writers1-30. Much work has been done on the performance of bromine, chlorine and iodine5-29. Of these, bromine and chlorine look most promising. Iodine is quite expensive and sometimes forms an Insoluble film on a precious metal surface22,23. Little experimental work has been published on the relative performance of bromine versus chlorine. The Pourbaix diagrams for the halide leach system (see Fig. 1-4) Indicates a significant stability advantage for bromine In forming complex ions with gold. This should result In greater extraction of gold under similar leach conditions and Is evaluated In this work. The regeneration of halogen from a spent leech solution is a critical requirement for an environmentally acceptable halogen leach process. Bromide can be oxidized In-situ to bromine ~ adding chlorine or ozone2,31. Bromide like chloride can be oxidized In an electrochemical cell to produce halogen on demand 13,15,17. Bromine clearly offers a number of possible regeneration pathways. This work strives to compare the relative ability of chlorine and bromine to extract gold from partially and fully oxidized ores. A commercially pressure oxidized sample was evaluated under a number of experimental conditions. The autoclave feed ore from the same mill was also evaluated after complete oxidation In a laboratory autoclave.

Demands on available lands will continue to increase due to the projected increase in population and industrial expansion. Though there is an upper limit on the available lands, the multi-use nature of the lands will make it possible to meet these demands. However, this will not happen without adequate planning. Land uses can be broadly categorized as non-renewable and renewable. Lands with mineable resources can be dedicated at some point in time to the extraction of resources. Such a dedication, however long-term, is only temporary because of the non-renewable nature of the mineable resources. Implied here is that the land will be available before and after mining for other uses. Planning for such lands must have the objective that, as far as practicable, no non-renewable uses are pre-empted and no renewable uses are permanently destroyed. The primary aspects of this planning process will be addressed in this paper, These aspects include a discussion of planning responsibility, data needs and availability, the integration of mine planning and post-mining land use planning and a long-term plan for resource conservation and utilization. Minerals, together with agriculture and forestry products, are the primary sources of wealth. Therefore, to avoid land development that may pre-empt future mineral resource utilization, the local planning groups must be aware of the mineralization and mining potential. Much work needs to be done to identify and characterize the mineral resources. Even more work is needed in land use planning for lands with mineral deposits.

INTRODUCTION The Washington Camp - Duquesne mining district is located on the east flank of the Patagonia Mountains, 98 kilometers south of Tucson and within 5 kilometers of the International border (Figure 1). Since the development of high-grade silver and copper ores by settlers in 1862, the Washington Camp - Duquesne district has yielded an estimated 450,000 metric tons of ore. The mined ores averaged 8% zinc, 2% copper, 3% lead and 124 grams of silver. REGIONAL GEOLOGY The Patagonia batholith, of Laramide age, crops out in the core of the Patagonia Mountains intruding Precambrian granite, Paleozoic sediments and Mesozoic igneous, volcanic and clastic rocks. This granodioritic batholith lies in a northwest-trending zone of Laramide plutonic rocks, which can be traced for a distance of 320 kilometers from the Nacozari district in Sonora, Mexico to the Silver Bell Mountains west of Tucson, Arizona. Several major porphyry copper systems occur within this plutonic belt including the Red Mountain deposit found at the northern end of the Patagonia Mountains. Data from more than 80 mineral deposits within the Patagonia Mountains show metal zoning symmetrical to the Patagonia granodiorite (Graybeal, 1975). Disseminated copper-molybdenum deposits occur within the batholith. Pyrometa-somatic, limestone replacement and vein deposits of copper, lead, zinc and silver occur in the wallrocks adjacent to the. granodiorite and epithermal manganese-silver deposits occur at the outer periphery of economic mineralization. GEOLOGY OF THE WASHINGTON CAMP - DUQUESNE DISTRICT Stratigraphy Nearly 900 meters of miogeosynclinal Permian and Pennsylvanian sediments are exposed in the district (Figure 2). In addition, 700 meters of older Paleozoic rocks crop out 6 kilometers north of the district. The Paleozoic rocks occur in fault contact with a sequence of Triassic-Jurassic pyroclastic and flow rocks, ranging in composition from latite to rhyolite.

"Underground structures such as square/arch steel sets, king beam structure, etc. are widely used for the roof support in underground mines. In designing and calculating the required carrying capacities of these underground structures, how to identify the potential rock loads on the structures over long term is a challenging question for ground control engineers. Based on design practices of both surface and underground structures, the authors have designed and applied appropriate load factors in underground structural design projects to accommodate different rock types, entry/intersection dimensions, roof geologic conditions, availability of roof bolts and water, etc. Classification of load (reduction) factors for large-span underground intersections are presented for reference. Success of designed underground structures in effectively controlling roof stability over years indicates the applicability of the load factor concept for underground structural design, and its same significance as of the load factor specifications in ASCE/SEI 7-10, ANSI/AWC NDS (2015), and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (2012). The load factor concept will facilitate ground control engineers to appropriately utilize popular structural design software, such as RISA-3D or -2D to efficiently design and analyze underground structures.LOAD FACTORS IN STRUCTURE DESIGN APPLICATIONSIn structures, loads cause stresses, deformations, and displacements. Assessment of their effects is carried out by the methods of structural analysis with the help of load factors. Loads can be increased or decreased by load factors to meet the requirement that design strength be higher than maximum loads. For example, in designing a staircase, a dead load factor may be 1.2 times the weight of the structure, and a live load factor may be 1.6 times the maximum expected live load based on the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method. "SUMMARY The “28 May Station” is the only transfer station between the existing Green and Red metro lines in Baku. As part of the huge development strategy of the metro network, the complete separation of the existing underground lines has been planned at this location, in order to simplify the operation of the future metro system. The extreme challenge of the project is represented by the need of achieve the separation of such lines over a breakdown of the operation of just five weeks. The lack of direct access from the surface, a complex geology with artesian water layers, a congested underground space and sensible buildings represent additional constraints. The chosen design solution consists in creating a complex steel pipe jacking frame around the operating tunnels and then excavating under such frame two large caverns where the separation of the existing lines and the construction of the new metro tunnels will be achieved. Soil treatments have been conceived to mitigate the geotechnical risks and to reduce possible impacts on the existing structures. The paper illustrate the challenges of this extraordinary project, one of the most complex underground structures under study, the design solutions and the risk management approach used to manage the complexity and to design the mitigations measures. INTRODUCTION The metro network in the capital of Azerbaijan is rapidly growing together with its metropolitan area. The beginnings of the existing metro system started in Baku in 1967 in Soviet times. To date, only two lines (Green and Red) are in operation with a total length of 34 km, including 23 stations. The future network will be much wider: besides the construction of three completely new lines and the extension of two existing lines, the whole metro project includes the development and modernization of the existing metro sections. A consortium formed by Systra (leader), Mott MacDonald (Praha) and Saman (Korea) awarded the contract for the preliminary and detailed design of infrastructures for the extension of Baku Metro Network. This extension consists in 83 km of new lines and extension of existing lines. As part of this modernization project, the connection of the Green Line at the 28 May / Cefer Cabbarli Stations, focus of this paper, represent also it’s ""Achilles' heel"" given that the already very congested system have only one transfer station."

The Equis and El Roble projects are located in the Cordillera Occidental of Colombia. The Equis vein deposits have sulfide ore reserves of 95.9.5.5 mt (105.770 st) grading 8.51 g/mt (0.248 oz/st) gold and 12.4 g/ml (0.36 oz/st) silver with 0.94 % copper. 1.10 a lead and 11.06% zinc. Ore reserves at El Roble are estimated as 1.1% Mmt (1.21 million st) grading 4.89% copper and 3.39 g/mt (0.099 oz/st) ,old. Geologically possible reserves at Equis may total 1.6.Mmt (1.76 million it). El Roble has the potential to contain several tens of millions of metric tons. Exploration included diamond drilling, trenching, channel sampling, rock and soil geochemistry, geophysics and tunneling. Erratic high grade samples affect the weighting of channel and drill core samples. Secondary reconcentration of gold is also a factor. Sample maps and graphs show the distribution of values to be highly variable. Geostatistical treatment of some of these data gave important guidelines for parameters such as sampling densities, drill hole spacing and confidence limits.

The dissolution behavior of copper and gold from their pure state and from Au/Cu alloys in cyanide solutions has been investigated using a rotating disc. Oxygen was used as an oxidant. The effect of the composition of the alloys, stirring speed of the disc, concentration of lixiviants and temperature on the overall dissolution kinetics has been studied. Gold/copper alloys of three compositions were used in this study. The atomic percent of gold in these alloys was 75, 50 and 25, respectively. The dissolution behavior of these three alloys was compared with that of pure gold and of copper under the same chemical conditions. In general, the dissolution of copper and gold from alloys is partially controlled by surface chemical reaction and largely by mass transfer.

The existence of resins in some coal deposits in various parts of the world has been known for many years. These resins vary considerably in chemical structure and properties. The resin that is found in Utah coal, however, is rather unique, and has properties particularly attractive for the manufacture of printing ink mastics and adhesives. This resin is a rather dark, very high melting point, low molecular weight hydrocarbon resin. Its typical properties are shown in Table I. Its largest use by far, has been in the printing ink industry. The history of Utah coal resin is interesting, but unfortunately one of disappointment and failure.

Thunder Basin Coal Company received the 1987 Wyoming Excellence in Surface Mining Award for construction of the State's first major sediment control reservoir to be designed using the new settleable sol ids standard. Use of this standard resulted in construction cost savings of more than $250,000; reduced water quality monitoring; enhanced downstream channel stability because of more natural sediment loading; allowed simultaneous establishment of permanent waterfowl and fisheries habitat; and provided a quality recreational site. This article will address factors associated with the design and construction of that sediment reservoir and the benefits that were realized. Many attempts have been made during the last forty years to evaluate the performance of gravity separation equipment, that is, the effectiveness with which light and heavy particles are separated. The most comprehensive treatment of the subject was made at the 1st International Conference on Coal Preparation held in Paris (1950) by Cerchar. The methods suggested by the Conference were accepted and very widely used in the last 25 years. This paper discusses an improved method of evaluation in the light of the now accepted standard presentation. The float and sink analysis of the product is presented on a Gaussian distribution curve, resulting in an easier visualization of the inherent difficulties of separation. The ogives of the distribution curve are then plotted, giving a quantitative measure of the deviation from perfect separation as an error distance instead of an error area. Illustrations of the new method are given both for gravel and for coal preparation, but the concept is valid and applicable to other types of minerals which are separated by gravity methods.

Large is the applicable adjective here. The largest hydraulic shovel in the world, the largest copper mine in the world, the largest copper producing company in the world. The O&K RH 300 hydraulic excavator has been put into service to move overburden and mine ore at the Chuquicamata open pit mine of the Chilean state copper mining company, Corporation Nacional de Corbre de Chile (Codelco). A large shovel: Equipped with a 26-m3 (34-yd') rock shovel, the RH 300 is able to fill a 170-t (187-st) truck in three passes with cycle times of 30 seconds. A large mine: At present, the Chuquicamata pit is 4 km (2.5 miles) long, 2 km (1.2 miles) wide, and 520 m (1700 ft) deep from rim to bottom bench. The current 450 kt/d (496,000 stpd) of material mined will increase to 600 kt/d (661,000 stpd) when the expanded production rate is reached in 1989. (Chuqui Expansion details, p. 20). A large mining company: Codelco's total output from its two open pit and three underground copper mines is more than 1.1 Mt/a (1.2 million stpy) of copper. This makes Codelco by far the largest copper producer in the world. It accounts for about 15% of the Western World's copper requirements. Chuquicamata is located in the hot and arid Atacama desert of northern Chile. The mine is located 240 km (150 miles) northeast of the port city of Antofagasta. Mine elevation is 2700 m (8850 ft). Chuquicamata's known reserves of oxide and sulfide ores amount to more than 450 Mt (496 million st) of contained copper. There are also reserves of more then 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of contained molybdenum. Originally, Chuquicamata was a rail pit. The shovels loaded rail cars hauled by locis on tracks along the benches. During the 1970s, the rail transport was replaced by truck haulage. Crushing and conveying rock waste in the pit is the latest step in the continuing evolution of more productive and economical methods of materials movement. In 1990, the in-pit crushing plant will be in operation. The waste will be mainly transported out of the pit on belt conveyors rather than trucks. The system will incorporate a 9.6-kt/h (10,600-stph) semi-portable crushing station, a 14-km (8.7-mile) conveyor using 1.8 m (6 ft) wide heavy duty belts, and a tripper-spreader to stack the waste dumps. Since Chuqui went into production in 1915, more than 2.5 Gt (2.8 billion st) of material has been excavated. This includes nearly 1.7 Gt (1.9 billion st) of ore from which some 16.4 Mt (18 million st) of copper has been recovered. The Chuquicamata porphyry type ore body is an altered and fractured intrusive granodiorite or quartz-monzonite porphyry that carries the mineralization. The action of ground water on primary sulfide minerals in geo¬logic time has created oxide ores and a zone of secondary enrich¬ment. The oxides occur above the sulfide zone and are also mixed with the upper parts of the latter. At Chuquicamata, the current grade of 1.5% copper is expected to decline to about 1% by 1995. In 1986, Gold Fields began negotiations with a large Nevada electrical power utility to supply power for its Chimney Creek Mine In northern Nevada. After the long negotiations reached an impass over various costs associated with the power line, a decision was made by Gold Fields to generate its own power. Self-generation is not uncommon overseas, but it is rare for any but very large or very small operations in the United States. Surprisingly, under certain conditions a mine can generate its own power profitably and Gold Fields has found that the associated operating and maintenance problems are minimal. The following report details what factors went into this decision and how it works. Hopefully, it can serve as a guideline for those who may find themselves in a similar position.

This paper considers the potential water quality impacts of future energy scenarios which project an approximate doubling of coal utilization from 1975 to 1985. The major impacts estimated for coal extraction are related to effluents from unregulated activities (reclaimed areas prior to stable vegetation) and pollutants (e.g., metals and ammonia). Where applicable, the EPA effluent guidelines to be in effect by 1983 reduce the impact of individual sources to low levels. For example, total suspended solids and acidic discharges are to be regulated to levels generally below recommended water quality standards for receiving streams. However, implementation of these guidelines, particularly for coal extraction, has not been demonstrated on a wide scale. Water quality is not expected to be a major constraining factor for increasing capacity of coal fired utility and industrial boilers. Water quality control has not been demonstrated on a commercial scale for coal conversion to synfuels, but adequate control technologies appear to be feasible.

Research by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown that heat/humidity buildup is a major concern within coal mine refuge alternatives. High temperature and humidity levels inside a refuge alternative may expose occupants to heat stress. Due to the safety risks associated with testing using human subjects, NIOSH partnered with ThermoAnalytics Inc. to create detailed thermal simulation models of refuge alternatives with human occupants. The objective of this effort was to predict a miner’s core temperature response and moisture loss in environments that may be encountered in a coal mine refuge alternative. These parameters were studied across a range of temperatures and relative humidity values to determine if the current 35 °C (95 °F) apparent temperature limit for refuge alternatives is reasonable. The results indicate that the apparent temperature limit is protective, provided that miners are supplied with sufficient water. The results also indicate that the body core temperature does not reach dangerous levels even at an apparent temperature of 54 °C (130 °F). However, the results show that moisture loss increases with apparent temperature. Therefore, if the apparent temperature limit were raised, the water provided in a refuge alternative would have to be increased to offset moisture loss.

The calculation of costs for an underground mine, as well as the planning of the equipment and materials to be used, is a complex and time-consuming process. The estimation depends on a multitude of parameters, and all mining processes are interconnected. A novel tool has been developed that enables automated calculation of underground mines and allows for the comparison of the effects of changing individual parameters. Previously, changing individual planning parameters often necessitated a complete recalculation of the mine. The newly developed calculation tool provides an innovative planning aid that allows for more efficient and accurate mine planning and cost estimation. The tool enables the user to implement continuously up-to-data costs and prices. This allows for more accurate planning data and results. The underlying concept of the calculation tool, its implementation at a planned quartz porphyry mine in Germany, and the verification of the tool at an existing underground mine will be presented.

Paste tailings disposal was successfully implemented at the New Jersey mill in Kellogg, ID with two different types of ore feed, a gold ore and a silver ore. The purpose of this paper is to describe the production of paste tailings, including operational problems during commissioning, and also highlight the environmental and economic benefits that were realized versus conventional tailings disposal such as the recycling of process water, increased shear strength and reduced permeability of the tailings mass, and reduced environmental permitting.

In mechanized tunnelling operations performance, consumption and safety are main factors for jobsites. One of the most important components effecting these factors, especially in slurry TBM operations, are Slurry Treatment Plants (STPs). Inadequate/ suboptimally dimensioned and designed STPs create bottlenecks for tunnelling operation and jeopardize time schedules and performance. Inefficiently planned STPs could drastically increase consumption figures such as electrical power, bentonite, water and polymers, etc. Inaccurately selected and treated suspension properties can cause a high-risk potential for the whole job. This paper debates the relevant key parameters for STPs from start to finish of a project and its results in influencing factors from the manufacturer´s point of view.
