In October, 1990, a fire started in a large underground coal mine in Western Pennsylvania. During fire-fighting activities, an explosion occurred and all personnel were evacuated. Safe re-entry into the mine was not possible and the mine was sealed. Recovery efforts began in January, 1991 and continued until March, 1991, when permanent underground seals were installed between the fire area and the mine openings. This paper describes an extensive atmospheric monitoring program conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center (PS&HTC) including the analysis of mine fire gases, natural ventilation, fan pressure and air quantity distribution.

Viscosities of Feo-SiO2 slags were calculated using the previously developed structural based model. An expression was derived using hole theory and the atomic pair model to relate the NO0 and temperature to the viscosity. The deduced equation n=4.9x10-9 T1/2 NO0 exp (E/RT) poise was successfully applied to predict the viscosity of FeO-SiO2 slags in the composition range of 0.1 < XSiO2 < 1 for several temperatures. The calculated data agrees well with the experimental viscosity data.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed a series of lab tests to evaluate the respirable dust removal capacity of an industrial air-cleaning fan. Limestone and coal dust were tested separately in NIOSH’s full-scale drill table simulator at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD). Gravimetric samplers with Dorr-Oliver Cyclones and 37-mm filters were used at two upstream and four downstream locations inside and outside of the drill shroud chamber. There were six tests performed for both the limestone and coal dust experiments. In the limestone tests, an average respirable dust concentration of 98.86 mg/m3 was achieved upstream of the air-cleaning fan. The filter results show that the averaged respirable limestone dust reductions were 7.84%, 8.81%, 10.94%, and 18.02% at the four sampling locations downstream of the fan. In the coal tests, upstream samplers achieved an average of 129.03 mg/m3 of respirable coal dust. The averaged dust reductions were 9.54%, 9.83%, 18.54%, and 19.21% at the four downstream sampling points. The results indicate limited cost benefits of using this technology because of the relatively low dust reductions determined from this laboratory study.

Fluoride activation has been evaluated by Hallimond-tube flotation of collophanite in terms of fluoride concentration, conditioning time, pH, and temperature. The results reveal that efficient oleate flotation of collophanite can be achieved by fluoride activation. Fluoride adsorption by collophanite as a function of fluoride concentration, temperature, pH, and crystal structure suggests that, at low fluoride concentration, a fluoroapatite-type compound may form on the collophanite surface by chemisorption of fluoride ions at calcium sites; at high fluoride concentration, calcium fluoride ap¬pears to form at the collophanite surface invovling a surface-precipitation phenomenon. The formation of CaF2 on the surface of fluoride-treated collophanite is further substantiated by the FTIR spectroscopic measurements, which clearly shows a metathetic exchange with phosphate from the collophanite lattice during surface precipitation process.

Nearly all of the sulphur produced in the world today is converted to sulphuric acid and 49 % is used in the manufacture of fertilizers. In the last few years we have seen the beginning of another chapter in the volatile history of sulphur as the severe shortage of 1963:-67 has been transformed into present-day surplus. Prospects for further aggravation of this situation in the years ahead seem assured. In 1970, western world production showed a rate of increase of 4 -5%, which 1S somewhat less than that of 8% for the period 1963-1967. The rate of growth of consumption dropped considerably in 1968 when the demands of the fertilizer industry fell. During the same period of time, wide-spread demands have been set in motion for a clean environment which indicates that a fundamental change in sulphur supply, demand, and even sources, is likely to result from this upheaval. The sale of sulphur by Poland to the western world has increased and for 1970 was estimated at over one million metric tons. In this paper, response surface methodology was applied to optimize the experimental conditions for the wet grinding of synthetic rutile. The effects of parameters such as rotation speed, solids concentration and duration of grinding on grinding efficiency were systematically investigated and the process conditions were optimized, using a nonlinear regression model based on central composite design. The statistical analysis of the results showed that in the range studied, the grinding efficiency of synthetic rutile was significantly affected by the rotation speed of the conical ball mill. According to results from analysis of variance, the value of the determination coefficient (R2=0.9989) indicates that the predicted values are found to be in good agreement with experimental values. The optimized experimental conditions were as follows: a rotation speed of 350 rpm, a solids concentration of 27.31% and a grinding time of 50.31 min, respectively. Under optimum conditions, the predicted grinding efficiency of 94.79% is obtained. The experimental values from the validation experiments were well within the predicted value of the model.

"Steel members of the ground support systems in underground mines are routinely exposed to corrosive environment that may range from acidic to alkaline. Corrosion of steel bolts leads to metal loss and thereby, reduction in strength and useful life. Protective coatings are commonly applied to the steel bolts to combat corrosion. However, coatings are expensive and often cumbersome in practical applications. Instead, Minova has developed an innovative technology based on sacrificial anodes. The anodes were designed from non-ferritic alloys that are inferior to steel on the Galvanic Series. This paper will present data from field testing to show significant benefit of the technology. Potential applications in current products will be discussed. INTRODUCTION Corrosion is a physical alteration of a steel material from electrochemical reaction with its environment that often results in reduction of the mechanical and physical properties of that material. Mine roof bolts, the subject of this investigation, are particularly susceptible to corrosion as they can be exposed in their working environment to ground water and air with high humidity. As other researchers have determined, corrosion increases markedly in sulfide ore bodies due to acid runoff. There are several types of corrosion that a rock bolt is likely to undergo when used for ground reinforcement in underground mines (Aziz et al., 2013). Of all the types of corrosion, pitting is particularly dangerous as it can remove capacity for the bolt to deform with subsequent strata movements. Sudden failure of a bolt is likely to occur when severe pitting corrosion is experienced. The type and nature of corrosion depend on the nature of the ground condition and bolt encapsulation. Generally, the type of corrosion and severity of the corrosion varies along the axis of bolt. Almost all of the mine roof bolts used in mines, with the exception of fiber reinforced polymers, are made from steel. Most commercial explosives contain 70 to 94% ammonium nitrate, by weight. When portions of these explosives end up in shot rock and ore, through spillage or incomplete detonation, ammonia and nitrates leach out of them and into ground water. In recent years, State and Federal regulators have been applying more stringent water quality standards, particularly at new mines and development projects. Bulk ANFO, a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, is the explosive of choice at most mines, when mining conditions allow it. ANFO use is desired because it less costly than other explosives, but when spilled it dissolves readily in water. Several case histories in the United States and Canada show a clear connection between uncontrolled losses of bulk explosives and high nitrate levels in mine effluents. Mining companies have tried several approaches to reduce ammonia and nitrate levels in groundwater. They either control explosive losses, or they treat mine effluents at the end-of-pipe. This paper addresses the former solution --controlling explosive losses. For both packaged and bulk explosives, guidelines designed to limit losses during storage, handling and use, are described in detail.

Consider a deep gold orebody with grade of 4 g/t (0.11 oz/st). At the time of this writing, with gold prices at historic highs, it could be a good, but not great, prospect. But if it is a vein deposit, and those veins are 200 g/t (5.8 oz/st), it would be significantly more attractive if there was a way to produce directly from those veins, leaving the rest of the rock in place. It has been a viable commercial technology for more than five decades.

The Cannon Mine is located in Chelan County, near Wenatchee, Washington, at the eastern foot of the Cascade Mountains. The mine is situated about two miles from the Columbia River, in the arid Columbia River Valley. Two hydroelectric dams provide electricity for the area, the Burlington Northern Railroad has a switch yard and loading facilities in Wenatchee. Approximately 25,000 people live in the area. The principal industry is fruit farming. Underground mining techniques are used to provide feed for a 2,000 tpd flotation concentrator at the site. The techniques are low- cost, high productivity methods which allow for a high extraction rate along with a high rate of recovery of the minable reserve.

Shotcrete is a highly adaptable and widely used underground construction material at infrastructure and mining projects around the world. In fact, many projects could not have been completed without its utilization. As underground projects became larger the use of mechanized wet-mix spraying gradually replaced manual dry-mix shotcrete applications. This paper details some of the reasons for that and provides information on the equipment and operational factors including safety and productivity required to successfully complete underground shotcrete projects.

Scope of the Courier 300 System The fact that reliable on-stream analysis is a prerequisite for effective flotation control is hardly disputed today. Nevertheless, up to now no system has been available that includes all the equipment necessary for successful analysis. However essential an on-stream analyser is in itself, reliable and accurate assaying can only be assured after techniques for sampling, handling the slurries and computing the X-ray data have been developed for the purpose. The Outokumpu Company&apos;s Courier 300 System is a complete package that can be installed and handed over with the key. It includes the equipment needed for sampling and handling the slurries. It has been developed from the start to meet industrial demands. Obviously an on-line system must comply with far stricter standards than one designed for a laboratory. Assays are computed by an Outokumpu 316 digital data processor, which is an integral part of the system and controls its entire performance. The computer software is programmed as a standard package, including a highly advanced new model for assay computation. Analysis output is available for a process computer, report typewriter:, and recorders. The package also includes calibration for slurry assays at our pilot installation before delivery. A complete Courier System can analyse up to 4Z slurries and six elements in each slurry. Thanks to its modular design, it can be dimensioned initially to the customer&apos;s requirements and is easy to expand later at low cost. Being a mining company itself, Outokumpu has been able to utilize its own long experience in non-ferrous metallurgy - an important factor contributing to the success of the Courier system. This paper presents a comparison between the simulations of a semi-empirical model and a theoretical model for the prediction of radial stress in rock. The results of the simulations were compared to the results of a field test. The comparison of the radial stress predictions shows that in the semi-empirical model use of the plane wave approximation as the basis for the prediction of the radial stress provides a much better result than the theoretical model. The theoretical model includes the correct elastic wave geometry and theory but fails twice, firstly by considering the charge as a point (unit) energy source therefore; and secondly by using a Delta function with a very sharp rise and decay time to simulate, with no distinction between non-linear and linear zones, the attenuation of the energy per unit volume at the shock wave front as the wave moves away from the borehole. The results of the semi-empirical model were within the same order of magnitude as the results from the field test whereas only one result from the theoretical model came close to the result of the field test. However, even this closer result for the theoretical should be taken with caution as there was no measurement in the field test made at this distance from the borehole. Finally, because of its potential portability, convenience, and cost-effectiveness the theoretical model can be a most valuable tool for mining and civil construction operators in the early design of blasting rounds and of the mining operation itself.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated germanium and gallium extraction from an ore containing 0.089% Ge and 0.036% Ga. While previous researchers concluded that a reducing agent such as 502 is needed to extract germanium and gallium from such ore, this research showed that high extractions (87% Ge, 97% Ga) were possible using sulfuric acid alone, if the acid concentration were properly controlled. This control was achieved using a two-stage counter-current leach circuit. Microprobe analyses revealed that the non-extracted germanium is in solid solution with quartz, and therefore cannot be leached with 502 or sulfuric acid.

This paper describes a series of characteristic challenges of designing and building underground freight transportation systems, with reference to the example of Cargo sous terrain, a privately funded underground logistics project in Switzerland. It provides an overview of contracting practices that allow these challenges to be addressed with success.

The business of heap leaching requires accurate forecasting of metal production from the heaps. Business forecasts typically follow a format that project periodic (monthly, quarterly, or annual) product shipments based on anticipated operating results, e. g., tons of ore placed, grade of ore, and rate of leach extraction. Since revenue and cash flow are dependent on the metal production stream, forecasts of metal production are very important for project evaluation and business planning purposes. Nevertheless, production forecasts, particularly for new heap leach projects, have been prone to errors. The present paper identifies some of the pitfalls that would be encountered in preparing production forecasts for new heap leach operations and provides a checklist of considerations to assist in preparing a forecast. Also, the paper presents a case study of copper production forecasting used for the Sanchez Project, a heap leach operation located near Safford, Arizona, that is presently under development by AZCO Mining, Inc.

Longwalls using shearers in seam heights of less than 1.2 m (48 inches) are relatively rare in the U.S. Westmoreland Coal Company is currently operating a shearer-equipped longwall at a cutting height of 1.17 m (46 inches) in its Bullitt Mine. This face has averaged 2795 metric tons/day of operation since its startup on April 3, 1984. Longwall productivity in thin seams is substantially impacted by equipment reliability and availability of useable working room for travel and access. This paper addresses the design criteria used in selecting this face equipment, with the goal of maximizing these two parameters. Equipment discussed includes shearers. face conveyor, shields, stageloader, and emulsion system.

"The mining industry has recognized the advantages of high density backfill or ‘paste’, which is typically pumped with a hydraulically driven piston pump. Due to the discontinuous flow of this type of pump, pressure pulsations can occur in the discharge line. Pressure pulsations are an undesired phenomenon in pumping installations for a number of reasons that include: damage to the pumping system; piping and supports; disturbing noise levels; and even safety risks for operators and maintenance personnel.This paper describes an advanced system on the GEHO® piston pumps, which will prevent virtually no pressure pulsations from occurring, rather than merely reducing the already existing pulsations.INTRODUCTIONThe first GEHO® hydraulically driven piston pump was developed in the mid-1970s. It was an industrial design pump designed to operate in the high-standard industrial environment with regards to operating hours per day, duties, maintenance and lifetime of the pump and spare parts. This type of pump has a proven track record and has been further developed for the type of applications that we are describing today. The special feature of this pump type is its ability to pump extremely viscous slurry with solids content of up to 90% by weight, at high pressures. Typically, in the mining industry, this pump is used for tailings transportation, with a focus on mine backfill and is often referred to as a paste pump.In the 1980’s the hydraulically driven piston pump made its entry into the application of mine backfill, thanks to the high discharge pressure capabilities enabling the mines to pump higher density (i.e. higher solids concentration) slurries and pastes over longer distances.Part of the ongoing development was (and still is) the increase in discharge pressure and flow capacity to comply with the ever growing demands for high power piston pumps. In line with the technological developments and increase in performance duties, the popularity of this pump type increased significantly and many other industrial applications have discovered the benefits of this pump type.Together with the increase in pump discharge pressures and flow capacities the effect of an undesired phenomenon also increased: the phenomenon of pressure pulsations. Before we explore this subject in more detail it is important to first understand the design and the characteristics of a hydraulically driven piston pump."

WHY DO AN AUDIT? There is increased enforcement of environmental laws and regulations at State and Federal levels with attendant steep fines and even the possibility of jail sentences. We are all aware of environmental and public health and safety incidences (i.e., Love Canal, Bhopal) which have led to stringent laws and regulations (i.e., CERCLA, RCRA, SARA). In some cases, the courts have specified that a company institute an audit program as a condition of settlement of claims which related to lack of environmental control. The U.S.EPA issued an Environmental Auditing Policy Statement in the November 8, 1985 Federal Register (pp. 46504-46508) which encourages the use of environmental auditing by regulated entities. Elements of what EPA considers to be an effective environmental auditing program are outlined and briefly explained. These factors combine to indicate why there is a growing number of companies which have instituted an audit program. Briefly, the program can and should be used to monitor compliance with environmental regulations and corporate policy, to prevent violations, to improve policies and procedures, to raise the level of environmental awareness, to encourage communication among operations and all management levels about environmental problems, and to measure risks and control costs. AMAX Inc. has had an environmental audit program since the early 1970&apos;s. The AMAX Environmental Affairs Department, working with the Law Department, oversees and coordinates environmental audits and analyzes the findings which an audit reveals. Facilities are audited on a regular schedule; those having the greatest potential for environmental liabilities are audited at least annually; other facilities are audited less frequently. The question of who performs the AMAX audits was settled in favor of the audit team being independent of personnel from the facility being surveyed. Other methods of auditing could be the following: - Independent contractor (Appendix A) - Combination of independent contractor and in-house staff - Self-audit by site personnel The merits and demerits of who should conduct the audit can be analyzed to suit your particular needs. Next you need to decide on the procedure for the audit and the form for reporting and follow up. Environmental publications referenced in Appendix B can be helpful to you at this point. After deciding on the form of auditing, a schedule is prepared and followed to the closest extent possible. This schedule should be published and distributed to the sites so facilities know when they are being audited. This is not designed to be "a game of hide and seek." Various elements of the AMAX Audit Program are as follows: Team selection Pre-visit preparation Site visit Exit interview Report Using the audit Follow-up Team Selection The usual make-up of the team is the audit manager, the environmental specialist who normally provides assistance to the site or has knowledge about the operation, and a legal representative if his or her schedule allows. The legal representative will review the findings of the audit team if a personal visit is not timely or necessary. Size of the team can be expanded, but a minimum of the audit manager and the environmental specialist is best. Two sets of observations are better than one. The environmental specialist can also provide the rapport which is beneficial to creating the appropriate tone so that the site people will be as cooperative as possible. This is not to be an antagonistic exercise.
