Daw Mill Colliery, UK Coal, near Coventry in England, mines the Warwickshire Thick Seam at 800 m/2500 ft depth using longwall retreat with gateroads supported by rockbolts. Over the last eight years the mine has worked longer and wider panels with extraction heights of over 5 m. Recently the mine has experienced high deformation conditions principally from the rib sides resulting in operational issues and production delays. Investigation of rib deformation was undertaken using new inspection and measurement techniques, including systematic laser surveying, and improved rib support consumables were developed and introduced. A new rib trussing system using textile webbing has proved very successful.. A rib support management system was also developed and introduced for face retreat. This allowed rib support to be more effectively managed both for production and safety. For the current developments, new 28-mm-diameter roof and rib bolt systems have been introduced and rib bolt length has been increased to 3 m, with the aim of achieving gateroad stability over the life of the panel. Significant reductions in roof and rib deformation have been confirmed by the latest monitoring results. These ground control innovations are allowing Daw Mill?s potential to be realised. Production from 302?s face in 2008 set new UK and European records. However the support enhancement process continues and further innovations are planned.

Over the past several years, state governments have been vigorously refurbishing old health department agencies and smoke control laws in anticipation of pending federal developments. Many states now possess a mature air pollution control administrative organization and a fairly sophisticated set of regulations on air pollution, This developing network of state control legislation and regulation is the machinery which will be called upon to implement federal standards, In order to prevent the wasted effort and resources which inevitably result from hasty action, industry should be in con- tact with local and state control agencies and be familiar with lines of communication to agency representatives. Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, both current and pending, is required. Moreover, federal law and future federal air pollution control plans, should be well known. Industrial air pollution control should be geared to a long range plan which utilizes existing technology while at the same the recognizing that today's technology will be improved upon with time, Regulation, too, can be expected to become more stringent. The implications of air pollution control in the Appalachian region of the United States will be felt most strongly by the coal industry of this area. Either directly or indirectly most regulations in these states have a significant bearing on coal mining, processing, utilization or waste disposal. The extent of coal-related activity in the Appalachian States of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee can be observed from the data provided in Table I. This data indicates that 86 percent of active bituminous coal mines and 69 percent of bituminous coal production were accounted for by these states. The purpose of this paper is to provide information on current and proposed legislation and regulations on air pollution in the Appalachian states, The information should prove valuable not only to the coal industry but also to industry in general as a means of evaluating both pollution control action that has been taken to date and the course of future control measures. Reference information in the forms of addresses of appropriate agencies and citations to specific state laws and regulations is provided. All information is current as of February, 1969.

The vast majority of the estimated 100 million rock anchors installed in mines in the USA per year use resin cartridges (Tadolini and Mazzoni, 2006). About 4.5 million per annum of these are bolts with a mechanical shell that if properly installed become effective active supports on installation. In addition, cable anchors (mostly passive) are installed with typically 4 ft of effective resin anchorage length sometimes with mechanical shells, which further makes the installation more difficult. This is because the cable (even with a stiffener tube) is not very rigid. When installing bolts with mechanical shells and cable bolts in the holes, the back-pressure can be so high that the installation is unsuccessful often creating a ?spinner? (an un-tensioned bolt) at best or buckling the bolt thus requiring another bolt/cable to be installed, or leaving a poorly functioning unit. The installation problems can create a significant potential safety hazard and waste time and money. Using a purpose designed test rig that physically inserts different rock anchors into pipes with resin and measure the back-pressure developed with time during the insertion/ installation. The test installation procedure is designed to mirror that used underground by rockbolt operators in coal mines. In addition a computer model has been calibrated that can predict the approximate back pressure of new anchor and resin combinations acting as a screen before physical testing. This research has lead to an understanding and quantification of the insertion back-pressures and this already resulted in improved prototype designs that could lead to more reliable mechanical shell and resin bolt installations.

Cyanidation has established itself as the main process for extracting gold from ores in this century. However, many ores exhibit refractoriness to the conventional cyanidation process. The main cause of the refractoriness is generally the presence of carbon, tellurium, and sulfides, particularly those of antimony, arsenic, and iron. The problem is usually solved by either modifying the cyanidation conditions or providing an oxidation pretreatment. This paper presents results from studies that help in understanding the causes of refractoriness of various gold ores. This is followed by a discussion of many processes that have been developed to solve the problem such as intensive cyanidation, pressure cyanidation, carbon-in-leach cyanidation, and pretreatment processes such as roasting, chemical oxidation, autoclave oxidation, and bacterial oxidation.

The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America reports that an underground mine is the most difficult environment to illuminate (Rea, 2000). Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) are conducting ongoing studies designed to explore different lighting technologies for improving mine safety. Underground miners use different visual cues to escape from a smoke-filled environment. Primary and secondary escapeways are marked with reflective ceiling tags of various colors. Miners also look for mine rail tracks. The main objective of this paper is to compare different lighting types and ceiling tag colors to differentiate what works best in a smoke-filled environment. Various cap lamps (LED and incandescent) and lasers (red, blue, green) were compared to see which options resulted in the longest detection distances for red, green and blue reflective markers and a section of mine rail track. All targets advanced toward the human subject inside of a smoke-filled room to simulate the subject walking in a mine environment. Detection distances were recorded and analyzed to find the best cap lamp, laser color and target color in a smoke environment. Results show that cap lamp, laser color and target color do make a difference in detection distances and are perceived differently based on subject age. Cap lamps were superior to lasers in all circumstances of ceiling tag detection, with the exception of the green laser. The incandescent cap lamp worked best in the simulated smoke compared to the LED cap lamps. The green laser was the best color for detecting the tags and track compared to the red and blue lasers. The green tags were the easiest color to detect on the ceiling. On average, the track was easier for the subjects to detect than the ceiling tags.

Lupin is located on the shores of Contwoyto Lake at lat. 65° 48'N, Long. 111° 15'W and lies about 80 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. Since start up in 1982 the mine has produced over 2.15 million ounces of gold from 6.66 million tonnes of ore grading 10.63 gm/tonne. Total remaining reserves at 1993 year end were 5.1 million tonnes at a grade of 9.11 gm/tonne (1.65 million ounces). This is sufficient for 7 -8 years at the present annual production rate of about 200,000 ounces. The Centre and West Zones of the deposit are open to depth. The deposit is in an Archean metaturbidite sequence of the Contwoyto Formation, which has been mapped as part of the Yellowknife Supergroup of supracrustal metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks making up part of the Slave Geologic Province. These rocks have been subjected to regionar and contact metamorphism and to several phases of deformation. Six stages of Archean plutonism have been identified and all Archean rocks have been cut by Proterozoic diabase dyke swarms. Gold mineralization in the Lupin deposit is commonly fine grained and associated with pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite in amphibolitic banded iron formation. The gold-bearing portions of the host iron formations are characterized by the presence of multiple quartz veins and the pervasive replacement of grunerite by hornblende. In sparsely mineralized portions of the host iron formation, zoning of sulfides about quartz veins is clearly seen with the arsenopyrite halo being more restricted around the veins than the pyrrhotite halo. In well mineralized portions, quartz vein densities approach one vein per metre along strike. In these areas pyrrhotite distribution in the iron formation is more pervasive and the rock takes on the appearance of a banded sulphide rock.

Mine seismicity is influenced by the mechanical properties of both near-seam rocks and overburden and the prudent selection of mining methods and mine layout designs. Using finite-difference modeling, experience in many U.S. mines and measurements of the pressure arch width, the author has reviewed the engineering design factors that control seismicity in room-and-pillar retreat operations for stiff stratigraphic conditions in deep western U.S. mines. By back analyzing the overburden response in now understood to have been inadequately designed historic room-and-pillar mine, the overburden collapse mechanism is addressed as well as the need for improvements in designs including panel and barrier pillar widths, and sequence of retreat.

Toxic substances in On solutions can retard biological leaching of copper sulfide dump ores. On solutions were analyzed for metals, organics, and chloride, and showed inhibitory concentrations of aluminum, manganese, and chloride. Inhibition of bacterial activity by the solid fraction of On solution, with and without the organic constituents, was evaluated. Toxicity to bacterial species was evaluated by monitoring bacterial numbers, pH, Eh, and rates of iron oxidation. The On solution solids were toxic at 50 -60% of their field concentration. Most of the toxicity of the On solution was due to the organic fraction. Different SX reagents show varying degrees of inhibition of T. ferrooxidans. Bacterial inhibitory effects of carriers and lixiviants used in the SX plant should be determined so that entrained SX reagents do not retard biological dump leach systems. The reagents used should be the most cost effective and the least toxic.

Fuel is a major .cost for power generating utilities. Virginia Power is completing one of the nation's largest coal reconversion programs. As a result, 10 million tons of coal will now be used at six generating stations. Four of these stations are located on naviagable waterways. They consume over half of Virginia Power's coal. Historically, railroads have exclusively served these plants. In an effort to substantially reduce fuel cost, Virginia Power has reexamined transportation logistics and is proceeding with barge delivery. A phased approach was used by Virginia Power for the transportation program. Plant requirements were first identified. Coal sourcing issues were then examined. The concept of intermodal transportation was investigated. The bottom line cost savings was used as the criteria for continuing the project. The results thus far have been gratifying. Virginia Power has begun to implement barge transportation.

"While many classic mineral processing circuit design approaches rely on deterministic methods, numerous studies have shown that the uncertainty inherent to the various input parameters can significantly influence design decisions. In a separation circuit, many of the technical uncertainties can be mathematically represented as statistical distributions for the unit recovery and feed grade. These uncertainties are then propagated by the circuit design and reflected in the circuit performance indicators, such as product grade and global recovery. An effective design strategy entails identifying which units are most influential in this uncertainty propagation and thus merit further consideration. Unfortunately, few analytical tools provide this information, particularly those that rely solely on deterministic methods. However, one promising approach is through the application of Taguchi’s method, in a fashion similar to statistical tolerancing of manufactured products. Since the technical challenges are fundamentally similar, Taguchi’s method shows promise in evaluating the level of compounded uncertainty by various circuit designs while determining the role of each separation stage on the overall selectivity and variability of separation circuits. This paper demonstrates Taguchi’s method in several two and three unit circuit designs. INTRODUCTION AND METHOD DESCRIPTION Uncertainty in Mineral Processing Circuit Design Analysis and estimation of uncertainty propagation in mineral processing separation circuits is an essential and significant aspect of an optimal circuit design procedure. Most of the current circuit design methodologies have been constructed, implemented, and validated using a deterministic modeling approach. However, numerous studies have shown that the inherent uncertainty induced by uncertain design parameters can be a significant factor in many mineral processing applications (e.g. Kraslawski 1989; Xiao and Vien 2003; Ghaffari et al. 2012). Thus, an effective circuit design methodology must be able to quantify uncertainty in separation circuits with limited input data. This paper describes Taguchi’s method, as an experimental design technique, to approximate uncertainty in mineral processing applications, and then the similarity of results between Taguchi’s method and Monte Carlo Simulation is investigated. Monte Carlo Simulation The term “Monte Carlo Simulation” has been used to refer to a variety of stochastic simulation methods spanning a broad array of business, technical, and scientific domains. Most generally, Monte Carlo Simulation refers to numerical analysis which is based on (pseudo) random sampling from a domain of input parameters with a known statistical distribution. This methodology allows one to determine the distribution of expected results from a standard deterministic process model. Execution of a Monte Carlo simulation begins by identifying the domain of input parameters, statistical distributions for each parameter, and a deterministic process model which describes the anticipated result as a function of the inputs. Next, one discrete random sample is taken for each input parameter, considering the input distributions. The process model is then solved for this mix of input parameters, producing a single simulation result. This procedure is then repeated a “large” number of times, utilizing new randomly sampled input parameters for each simulation iteration. Once the desired number of iterations is reached, the results of each independent simulation are aggregated to produce descriptive statistics such as minimum, maximum, mean, standard deviation, kurtosis, and other distribution parameters. Given enough iterations, the Monte Carlo method fully explores potential synergies between the input parameters. Introduction The economics of open-pit mining de¬pend heavily on the cost of overburden removal. It is necessary to maintain a pit slope as steep as possible. Steeper slopes lower the volume of overburden to be handled, thus lower the cost of material handling. There is, however, a limit to which the pit slopes in any given situation can be steepened. Steepening beyond this point could jeopardize the pitwall stability, ren¬dering it unsafe. It might even result in curtailment of pit production. Several factors affect the stability of pitwalls. Some are natural, such as topogra¬phy and regional and local geology. Others are man made, such as pit geometry, ground water management, equipment, drilling and blasting, and the type of excavation. Greater control can be exercised in the latter with proper planning and by following a set of procedures based on field experiences. This article deals with one such control¬lable factor - drilling and blasting. The eco¬nomics of steeper pit slopes is discussed, followed by a record of drilling and blasting practices in western Canadian surface mines. Microprocessor-based instrumentation and its application to blasthole drilling is also described. Economics of steeper pit slopes The economics of steeper pit slopes is not a new issue. It should be reinforced, though, that pit slopes must be as steep as possible to ensure maximum recovery of minerals at a minimum stripping ratio. For operating, economic, and safety reasons, different pit slopes are maintained during different phases of pit development. Figure 1 shows a hypothetical ore body, cylindrical shape, with a radius of 225 m (740 ft) and located 30 m (100 ft) beneath the surface. The mining operations are planned at two different slope angles of 25° and 40°. The ultimate pit depth was established on the basis of the criterion of "break even pit." The variation of the stripping ratio at differ¬ent mine levels is shown in Fig. 2. Table I summarizes the eco¬nomics involved for two pit slopes, 25° and 40°. Figure 3 presents the profits during the life of the mine for these two pit slopes. This study shows that steeper slopes for an open pit operation are far more advanta¬geous than flatter slopes. But, what is the optimum slope at any one point in the life of a moving pit? And how can the stable slopes be maintained over the short- and long-term? Canadian blasting practices A survey of blasting practices in western Canadian surface coal mines revealed that, at most mines, hard consolidated overburden is drilled and blasted. Blastholes are drilled with rotary crawler-¬mounted rigs using bits in the 220 to 310 mm-diam (8.5 to 12 in.-diam) range. Typi¬cal hole depths are 12 to 18 m (40 to 60 ft) to accommodate the pit bench heights of 12 to 15 m (40 to 50 ft). For a 12-m (40-ft) high bench, a typical hole will be 14.6 m (48 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). Half of this hole will typically be a powder column and half will be stemmed. For a 15-m (50-ft) bench, a typical hole will be up to 18 m (66 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling. Drilling patterns are usually 9 m (29.5 ft) spacing and 9 m (29.5 ft) burden. The dissolution behavior of palladium powder in thiourea solutions has been studied. The variables studied included temperature, stirring speed, and concentrations of thiourea, acid and ferric ion. Palladium was found to be soluble in thiourea solutions in the presence of an oxidant such as ferric ion. The dissolution of palladium in thiourea solutions was found to be chemical reaction controlled with an apparent activation energy of about 2S.3 kJ/mol.

As the surface reserves are being depleted, more and more stone operators are seeking underground mining options. Stability of underground openings is a major concern for the safety and productivity. This paper relates to a field study conducted at a large underground limestone mine in Central Pennsylvania. Identification of hazards leading to ground failures and assessment of roof fall risks are important in mitigating injuries. Field observations at this mine were integrated with Roof Fall Risk Index (RFRI) mapping software recently developed by West Virginia University. The system is designed to combine field study data related to geologic factors, mining-induced damages, roof profile, and ground water influx to generate RFRI maps. The mine has adopted a proactive ground control program consisting of comprehensive examination of drilling and bolting logs; precision surveying of roof and rib; accurate mapping of cutters, falls, and geologic structures; and installation of extensometers and microseismic monitoring systems. Investment of time and resources has eliminated fatalities and lost-time injuries due to ground fall. This paper presents the geologic settings, mining conditions, ground control issues along with risk management and control techniques adopted at the study mine.

St. Marys Cement Company operates two cement plants in Southern Ontario, Canada. The original plant, located at St. Marys, a town 20 miles north of London, Ontario, began operations in 1912. A second plant, located at Bowmanville, Ontario, 40 miles north east of Toronto, began operations in 1967. In June 1973, St. Marys Cement began feasibility studies of modernizing their wet process plant at St. Marys. Over its 61 year life, this plant had been expanded from 335 m. tons per day (375 s. tons per day) to 2000 tpd (2200 s. tons per day), with all the original equipment retired several years ago. The objectives of the feasibility study were to develop a conceptual plan for a dry process plant and to de-, fine the appropriate process method and equipment. This study proceded along four fundamental fronts: a) How could the clay raw material, a glacial till with up to 20% boulder content, be processed in dry form and beneficiated? b) Were the raw materials suitable for the most efficient form of dry process kiln, the 4-stage preheater? If a 4-stage preheater kiln is selected should it utilize a precalciner? c) What type of clinker cooler should be used? d) What environmental constraints would be imposed on this plant and how can they be reconciled with capital and operating limitations? During the feasibility stage, pilot plant work was done on two possible solutions to the clay problem, operating plants in Europe were visited and discussions held with kiln and mill vendors.

The Crandall Canyon accident investigation included an interesting and unexplained observation by rescuers that the ?barrier rib had shifted northward as a unit, as much as 10 feet.? This is not the first mention of such a movement, although such reports are rare. Historical accounts describe unusual movement and displacement of intact coal, cribs and timbers. Two movements of particular interest are the creation of gaps above coal pillars and falling of standing support elements without apparent damage. A dynamic boundary element program was used to explore movements induced by slip on geologic features removed from the affected panel. While the resulting models are much too simple to fully replicate these observations, they do show that the types of phenomena observed are possible. They can also provide insight into the types of motions that ground support elements are subjected to during large bump events. This was demonstrated for the case of a large bump in a Book Cliffs coal mine. Seismic information suggested the source mechanism to be normal slip on a fault. A model of that source showed initial dilation of the panel followed by dynamic compression and rebound ? consistent with underground observations. The initial dilation is important as it may allow slender standing support to shift or fall.

About 200 M tons of coal were imported into Japan in 2007 and Indonesia was its second largest exporter, accounting for about 30 M tons (12% of the total imported coal). Indonesia produced about 200 M tons of coal, about 75% of which was exported in 2007. As the Indonesian government has decided on an energy policy wherein 33% of the country?s primary energy demand will be met by coal by the year 2025, the domestic demand for coal has increased dramatically in recent years. Over 99% of the coal produced in Indonesia comes from surface mines. However, the conditions of surface mines are worsening each year: the stripping ratio is increasing, approaching the economic ratio, and the infrastructure for coal from inland mining areas is insufficient for such intense mining operations. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. However, mining engineers and/or miners in Indonesia do not have a lot of experiences, expertise and know-how concerning the plans and operations of an underground coal mine. In addition, the industry faces a lot of problems which include poor conditions such as a steep coal seam, groundwater problem, stability of highwall, etc. Under these situations, a mine targeted in this research attempts to develop a new underground mine from an open-cut highwall because the stripping ratio in the surface mining area has almost reached the limitation of economic value. This paper discusses the possible development of a new underground coal mine from an open-cut highwall by means of field observation and numerical analysis.

It is considered that the most economical method for the exploitation of Gol-e-Gohar Area 3 iron ore mine is to combine open-pit and underground methods. In this regard, the most critical problem is the determination of optimal final pit depth. In this paper, a method which was recently introduced on the basis of economical block models of open-pit and underground is used to determine optimal final open-pit depth of Gol-e-Gohar Area 3 mine with due regards to the future underground mining option. Considering a low cost and productive underground method as a feasible alternative for extraction of the lower part of this deposit, room and pillar was selected. It is concluded that after the assessment and comparison of different values for depth, optimal final open-pit depth was determined to be equal to 285 m.

Barium fluorophlogopites were synthesized in the laboratory to investigate the effects of composition and crystal parameters on surface properties and floatability. The negative surface charge of mica is determined by the barium content, the crystal cell volume, the distance between the layer structure and the Ba-O bond length. The higher the barium content, the larger the cell volume and distance between the layer structure, and the longer the Ba-0 bond, the more negatively charged the surface is, and, hence, the more easily adsorbed are cationic collectors. When an anionic collector (sodium oleate) is used, barium oleate forms on the mica surface and hence chemical adsorption occurs.

One of the manifestations of the dynamically induced failures in deep coal mines is the violent ejection of coal from the ribs. A possible protection against such failures is the use of a specifically designed dynamic support system with reinforcement units having the sufficient capacity to absorb the kinetic energy of the dynamic failure and a skin support that can adequately contain the disintegrated coal. With this method of mitigation in mind, a recently introduced yielding rock bolt, trade name Roofex, has been identified (Harvey and Ozbay, 2009) as a possible energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. According to the manufacturer?s specification, the Roofex bolts can yield 300 mm (or more) displacement while holding 80 kN pull load. In order to assess the performance of this support unit in coal ribs, a series of in situ pull tests performed in two coal mines in Colorado. The results show that, under conventional pull test loading conditions, Roofex yielding bolts perform very close to their claimed specifications, thus showing a potential for their use as the main energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. Further studies are required to confirm the in situ performance of these bolts under dynamic loading conditions and also to develop a containment component for a dynamic support system for the mitigation of dynamic coal rib failures.
