Fuller's earth and bentonite are two clay commodities that are interrelated either by mineral composition or use. Because of this interrelation and the sale of both for many different uses, some ambiguity in their classification has resulted. The term "fuller's earth" has no compositional or mineralogical meaning, and it is used more or less as a catchall for any clay or earthy material suitable for certain uses. Most, but not all, of these uses require absorbent properties. Bentonite by geologic definition must have formed from volcanic ash or tuff or the glassy material in volcanic rock; most bentonites consist chiefly of montmorillonite but other clay minerals may be present. In industrial usage the term "bentonite" is applied to any clay consisting chiefly of montmorillonite, irrespective of origin. Georgia and Florida have historically been the leading States in the production of fuller's earth; bentonite has been produced in Alabama on a small scale. The first major use of fuller's earth was in refining of oils. Other materials have replaced fuller's earth for this purpose to a major extent, but many new uses for fuller's earth have been found, and production has increased in recent years. The new uses include absorbent products, insecticide and pesticide carriers, drilling mud, and many others. The bentonite now produced in Alabama is of the "southern," "low selling," or "calcium" type and is used mainly as foundry-sand bond. Most of the fuller's earth mined now is in the Hawthorn Formation of Miocene age; a lesser amount is produced from the Twiggs Clay Member and other beds in the Barnwell Formation of Eocene age. Inactive pits from which fuller's-earth was produced from other formations occur at several localities. The bentonite now mined in Alabama is in beds of Cretaceous age; several years ago bentonite was produced from Eocene beds in this State.

This paper presents a rock mechanics investigation of the time-dependent behavior of the rock immediately surrounding the excavation in a hypothetical one-entry coal mine based on the geology of the Illinois coalfields Research in the area of time-dependency is almost nonexistent and, therefore, this research was performed to make inroads into this neglected research area. Numerical analysis of a typical one-entry coal mine in an Illinois basin was performed using the commercial finite difference program FLAC3D. The immediate roof of the coal entry was assumed to be a shale formation. Shale in other formations has shown a tendency to creep with time. Therefore, in this study the authors modeled the shale in the roof using time-dependent characteristics. The input properties were taken from laboratory creep tests performed on shale. Model runs were performed at different stages, mimicking the progressive excavation of the entry. The model results showed that stresses in the roof attained the limit of yielding. Using Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria, potential zones of failure were also predicted. The results showed that the current computational capacities are sufficient to explore this previously uncharted territory of ground control.

Most mines using backfill routinely carry out quality control (QC) testing of backfill mixes with unconfined compression test cylinders. This is true for paste operations, hydraulic fill operations, and cemented rockfill operations worldwide. However, a large number of mines simply do not prepare and test the backfill samples in a consistent manner and fail to properly analyze or interpret the test results. Conventional concrete test criteria are not applicable given the differences in the mix constituents and the fact that a large number of the backfill QC test cylinders typically fail to achieve the target strength. Standard industry practices are needed to improve the analysis and interpretation of QC test results and to provide a better means of determining if the backfill is achieving its intended target strength. This paper will attempt to lay the groundwork for standard industry practices and will address several key questions raised by operators, such as how laboratory test data compares to in-stope performance, and how many QC tests should fail before a red flag should be raised. INTRODUCTION Although paste backfill is widely used throughout the mining industry, cemented rockfill (CRF) remains as the backfill of choice in places like Nevada where very poor ground conditions mandate the use of underhand mining. The safety and stability of undercut entries beneath backfill is a function of the quality of the cemented fill, which is typically assured through routine quality control testing. In the absence of a backfill quality standard, most mines rely on concrete standards to design and interpret their backfill quality control programs. In the USA, these standards are developed and published by organizations such as the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI). However, the application of these standards to cemented backfills can be very difficult owing to the high degree of variability in backfill mixes and the resulting variability in test results. To illustrate, the concrete industry standards denote that an acceptable (passing) test result occurs when the average strength of the duplicate test cylinders exceeds the target strength and no single test result deviates from the target strength by more than 10% (ACI 214R). Remedial measures must be taken if three consecutive tests fail. With mine backfills, it is safe to say that these criteria are rarely achievable. A further, more dramatic example is the accepted coefficient of variation for concrete QC cylinders. According to ACI 214R, the coefficient of variation (CV) should range from below 3% (excellent rating) to above 6% (poor rating). However, if this analysis method is applied to several backfill QC databases from operating mines, coefficients of variation are calculated on the order of 50%. Clearly, there is a need to develop better industry practices for assessing the quality of mine backfill and to assist mine operators with the interpretation of test results and the development of action plans in the event of undesired outcomes.

In an underground coal mining environment, a frictional ignition may be defined as the ignition of an explosive air/ methane/coal dust mixture by mining machinery. As the use of power loading equipment has become more widespread, frictional ignition incidents have increased. There have been many fatalities and injuries from this cause including the death of eleven miners in Sydney coalfield of Nova Scotia, Canada in 1979. This paper reports on the findings of a preliminary study carried out under the auspices of the Coal Research Laboratories, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. The objective of this study has been to identify a Longwall face cutting system that is inherently safer than the conventional shearer loaders used in Nova Scotia.

As openpit copper operations transition from surface mines to underground, the speed of underground infrastructure construction prior to production is critical for maximizing the value of the project. Typically, the preferred underground bulk mining method is block caving. In preparation for future underground projects, Rio Tinto made the strategic decision to invest in a step-change program that would develop system solutions to reduce the construction time of block caves. The program focused on improving safety and doubling or more the construction speed of both vertical shafts and horizontal infrastructure compared to existing drill-and-blast rates. After an extensive selection process, Rio Tinto selected the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine as one of the concepts to proceed with for construction of horizontal infrastructure for access and footprint. In addition to un-derground drilling and hauling equipment, Atlas Copco?s Robbins mobile miner concept (a previous attempt at horizontal mechanical excavation) completed trials at Mount Isa, Pasminco and Taisei. Rio Tinto selected the new Atlas Copco mobile miner machine concept for a number of reasons including the use of proven technology from the three previous mobile miner machines and other commercial products, as well as the ability to install complete ground support typical with high rock stress conditions at approximately 1,500 to 2,000 m (4,900 to 6,500 ft) depth. Atlas Copco, with support from Rowa, the Swiss company that specializes in back up systems for tunnel boring machines (TBM), is advancing the detail design of the access version of a tunneling system on behalf of Rio Tinto. Because of the different requirements between an excavation system for access tunnels and that for tunnels on the footprint, two different versions of the mobile miner machine technology were envisioned. The access and the footprint versions of the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine share a majority of key technologies and systems. Therefore, it was possible to conduct a performance conformation test using a full-scale version of the access machine that would also mitigate the technical risks for the footprint version. "INTRODUCTION Crossrail is a subsidiary company of Transport for London created for the construction of a new transverse train line 118 km long between Maidenhead and Heathrow in the West, and Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the East, including 21 km underground below London. Crossrail C305 Eastern Running Tunnels project is the biggest contract within Crossrail Project and involved boring 11.8 km of twin tunnels through London’s city center. Crossrail C305 Project interfaced with different contracts along its alignment and therefore logistics and solutions had to be developed to minimize disruptions or interferences with other contractors and the neighborhood. The paper describes this innovative approach. C305 CONTRACT APPROACH C305 contract was split into three drives, to be excavated by four EPB TBMs 7.1m diameter, as shown in Figure 1. •,Drive Y: 8.2km long between Limmo Peninsula and Farringdon Station in the city center •,Drive Z: 2.7km long between Pudding Mill Lane and Stepney Green Junction •,Drive G: 0.9km long between Limmo Peninsula and Victoria Dock Portal in the East. Crossrail C305 Project scope of works included the excavation of TBM tunnels and shafts at Limmo Peninsula and Stepney Green (including 17m span turnout caverns), along with the requirement to traverse station and shaft structures of other Crossrail contracts. Limmo Peninsula Site was a strategic element as it was the only access point on the tunnel alignment with sufficient available area at the surface for tunnelling logistics and also connected to the Lea River, tributary of the River Thames which facilitated marine operations for segment supply and muck removal. These were the reasons for operating Drive Y & Drive G TBMs from that location. Drive Z TBMs were originally planned to be launched from Stepney Green to Pudding Mill Lane, supplying the TBMs during Drive Z excavation from Limmo Peninsula site through the excavated section of Drive Y between Limmo and Stepney Green. During the early stages of the project, a value engineering proposal with a new tunneling strategy was agreed wherein the Pudding Mill Lane contractor would provide space for TBM assembly and operation in their portal, allowing for reversing Drive Z excavation and launching the two TBMs from Pudding Mill Lane. This optimization reduced some of the shaft requirements at Stepney Green which were contingent upon critical enabling works and provided program certainty and cost savings for the full Crossrail Project. It allowed for the reuse of both the Drive Z TBMs for Drive G excavation from Limmo to Victoria Dock Portal thereby saving on the procurement of two TBMs, in addition to easier logistics for both Drives Y&Z, therefore de-risking the TBM excavation process and the C305 Project program completion."

Pennsylvania Power & Light Company is an investor-owned public utility which was incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on June 4, 1920, with general offices at 901 Hamilton Street, Allentown, Pennsylvania. At the present time PP&L is operating five coal-fired steam electric stations, two hydroelectric stations and one steam heat plant which is being converted from anthracite to oil fired. In addition, PP&L is a partner in both the Keystone and Conemaugh mine mouth bituminous coal-fired steam electric stations in Central Pennsylvania and also part owner of a company which operates another hydroelectric station. PP&L plants, other than the two mine mouth stations, are located in Central Eastern Pennsylvania. (Figure 1) The company derives about 99% of its operating revenues from supplying electric service, while the balance is from the one steam heat plant serving the city of Harrisburg. The entire service area covering 10,000 square miles in 29 counties, has a population of approximately 2,300,000 people. The area served is mostly suburban. It includes 109 communities each having a population in excess of 5,000 people. The largest cities served are Allentown, Bethlehem, Harrisburg, Hazleton, Lancaster, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Williamsport which range from 50,000 - 120,000 in population. So you see our service area does not include any major cities. The area has industrial, commercial, residential, agricultural and recreational activities that are linked with the Eastern Megalopolis by an extensive interstate limited-access highway system and railroad networks. We consider this Central Eastern Pennsylvania area we serve as the "heart of the market" -- an area with great growth potential.

From the aspect of economic feasibility of mining, ineffective use of expensive mechanization investments is becoming a problem. In many cases, the machinery is in operation only 50 - 60 % of the total working time. The lost time when the machines are idle means a considerable over-investment in machines. The lost time, with LHD equipment in particular, accumulates from the following constituents: - the needs of the person operating the machine trips to the work site, lunch, coffee and other breaks, want for comfort, etc. - deficiencies in the monitoring and control systems for machine operation waiting periods at loading and unloading stations, unnecessary and erroneous actions, inefficient work, etc. - deficiencies in the machine condition monitoring system , and inefficient service and maintenance work The data transfer and computer technology of today provides means for resolving problems in several areas - including the area of underground loading operations. In the paper those areas of automation and data handling are considered which make possible an improvement in the usage and monitoring of LHD equipment. These fields are: remote control of equipment, use of TV cameras and monitors in remote control, locating equipment and data transfer down the mine, measurement of the load and the data storing system, systems for following the condition of the equipment, unmanned operation of equipment.

The study investigates SO2 leaching of low-grade ferruginous manganese ores to selectively recover manganese as MnSO4 and produce battery-grade electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD). The effects of leaching parameters (duration, temperature, SO2 flow rate) on Mn recovery were studied. Under optimum conditions, 97.9% Mn recovery was achieved. The MnSO4 leach liquor was purified and used for electrowinning EMD with 88.01% purity and battery-active γ structure.

To solve the problem of time-consuming and low precision in updating the open-pit vehicle transportation network, a high precision road network model construction method for unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines is proposed. This method can be divided into two steps. In the first step, an improved deep learning image processing model named DeepLabv3 + C (DeepLabv3 + Concat) is presented. Then, the road information extracted by the DeepLabv3 + C network is used to construct a three-dimensional model of the open-pit mine road network. In the second step, aiming at the time-consuming problem of unmanned vehicle meeting in open-pit mines, a vehicle meeting strategy was proposed. This strategy is used to guide the navigation of unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines. Besides, the DeepLabv3 + C network is verified by comparing the mIOU (means Intersection Over Union), accuracy, and continuity of road image extraction with the mainstream networks. The road network model constructed in the first step is quantitatively analyzed, and its performance is compared with GPS trajectory clustering methods. At the end of the paper, vehicle running simulation is carried out on the road network model by using Unity (a 3D visualization simulation software). The results show that the road network model constructed by this method can meet the navigation requirements of unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines, and the feasibility of the vehicle meeting strategy is proved.

The giant El Abra copper mine project under development in Northern Chile will come on stream in early 1997 at a production rate of 500 million pounds of cathode copper annually. Ownership is 51 % Cyprus Amax and 49% Codelco. Cyprus Amax has construction responsibility. Total project cost is $1050 million. El Abra will incorporate latest operational technology with labor efficient practices to achieve world class productivity levels and low initial cash costs of about US $0.35/lb copper. Development procedures for the almost 800 million ton oxide deposit, as well as the hydrometallurgical processes selected for recovery of the copper values are discussed. Construction costs and pertinent technical data are shown.

"While the American Exploration & Mining Association (AEMA) was preparing to close one chapter and begin another during its annual conference in Spokane, WA Dec. 3-7, word of a significant victory on an issue that has been important to the association for many years came from the halls of Washington, D.C.During a keynote address on Dec. 6, Joe Balash, assistant secretary of Land and Minerals Management for the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), told a sold-out lunch crowd that the DOI had released final drafts of proposed revisions to the Obama-era greater sage grouse conservation plans. The revisions suggest removing hundreds of thousands of acres of federally protected habitat in Utah, and easing restrictions on energy development and other activities, including mining, in Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming.The protections of the sage grouse were put in place by the Obama administration in 2015. The sage grouse, a prairie fowl, is considered by conservationists to be a key indicator species for the health of America’s sagebrush ecosystem. The previous plan to protect the ground-dwelling bird imposed restrictions to development in sage grouse habitat, but did not place the birds on the endangered species list — a move that many believed would have imposed far more rigid rules.AEMA, and its executive director Laura Skaer, led the way in the fight against the Obama-era greater sage grouse plan, arguing that the plan unnecessarily hurt economic development.“We were the first organization to point out that the greater sage grouse was being used to stop mining, oil and gas production and grazing on public lands in the interior mountain west,” said Skaer who is retiring from AEMA with a significant legal win on this front. “Early on, we cautioned that the proposed Land Use Plan Amendments would be worse than a listing (of the sage grouse) under the Endangered Species Act. Very few believed us until they saw the plans with all of the restrictions and the recommendation for a 4-million-ha (10-million-acre) withdrawal from mineral entry. We were the only organization that filed comments on all 88 Land Use Plan Amendments in 11 states covering more than 24.2 million ha (60 million acres).”"

Flotation is the primary method for copper minerals separation from porphyry ores. The need to process difficult-to-float porphyry copper ores presents challenges to engineers and scientists in several areas. This paper is concerned with summarizing generalized problems faced in the processing of porphyry ores and treatment methods to overcome the specific problems. Though some of the problems are interrelated the problems have been classified into three broad catagories. The case studies of some of the successful applications of innovative methods to solve problems related to ore mineralogy, metallurgical aspects of ore treatment and process variables show that quite often the problems are solvable by a judicious choice of flotation variables.

The relationships between the amount of light reflected off 21 samples of Florida phosphate and the chemical, composition of the samples were examined. It was found that the reflectivity of a rock is directly related to its chemical composition and that darker phosphates (less light reflectance) have relatively high amounts of iron, organic C and sulfate while lighter-colored rocks were rich in phosphorus, fluorine and aluminum. The use of reflectivity measurements could have economic applications in the phosphate rock industry: color specifications for rock shipments could he met, beneficiations by optical sorting could be performed and semi-quantitative analyses could be made rapidly and inexpensively.

In Europe, novel low-cost excavator-mounted Multi Tool Miner (MTM) systems, consisting of cutter head, hammer, bucket and drill attachments permit one unit to perform multiple tasks replacing several purpose-built machines. At the Weser Tunnel in Germany, cross-passages between the twin tubes were excavated in frozen ground with a remote-controlled mini-excavator equipped with a quick-change cutter head, ripper tooth and bucket. In Switzerland at the N2 interstate near Basel, W. Dietrich AG enlarged a 2-lane tunnel to three lanes with a cutter head mounted on a special excavator. Blasting and heavy hammers were not permitted due to the closeness of the “live” twin tube. At the N20 Zurich bypass, the Joint Venture of Jaeger, Frutingerand AHB excavates highway tunnels, some with extremely large cross sections, conventionally. A cutter head mounted on an excavator removes the rock shattered by blasting precisely to the pay line, thus preserving the rock’s self-supporting capacity preventing subsidence and damages to water resources and buildings on the surface under low overburden.

Editor&apos;s note: Minerals concentration is a disparate area, one involving many disciplines. Flotation, flocculation, reagents, microbial processes, gravity and magnetic separation, and the areas of coal and oil shale - concentration is relevant to all of these. In his article, Nagaraj reviews the latest developments and findings in concentration that have ocurred during the past year. Flotation The Monograph Series "Development in Mineral Processing," (Elsevier, 1985) was devoted to "Flotation of Sulfide Minerals." This volume has 26 articles covering the aspects of flotation chemistry, process development, plant design and equipment, and modeling and process control. The numerous articles on sulfide flotation had one recurring theme - the role of electrochemical processes and redox potentials in flotation and depression. Significant advances have been made in this area. A differential desorption-reflotation process was developed for the beneficiation of calcitic phosphate pebble (Hsieh and Lehr, Industrial Engineering and Chemistry, 1985). The carbonate and phosphate minerals were first separated from silica using fatty acid and the modifiers diphosphonic acid and HF. The collector on phosphate was then desorbed using sulfuric acid, and calcite was selectively floated without additional collector. A two-stage conditioning - initially at pH 10, followed by that at pH < 4.5 - with sodium oleate was developed to improve the separation between apatite and dolomite (Moudgil and Chanchani, Minerals and Metallurgical Processing, MMP, 1985). Separation of Mussorie rock phosphate in India from gangue calcite, dolomite, silicates, pyrite, and carbonaceous impurities was achieved with a three-stage flotation only on -75 µm (-200 mesh) fraction (Vaman Rao et al., International Journal of Mineral Processing, IJMP, 1985). The separation of fine SiC whiskers from other products of coked rice hulls by immiscible liquid and froth flotation was achieved using M1BC, pine oil, and mineral spirits (Parekh and Goldberger, MMP, 1985). Flotation was more economical. The carrier flotation separation of hematite fines from quartz fines was effected using coarse hematite as a carrier and oleic acid and ferric chloride (Cristoveanu and Meech, CIM Bulletin, 1985). Potash recovery from brines by laboratory-pan solar evaporation and amine flotation was discussed by Foot and Juiatt (Salts and Brines &apos;85, Proceedings, 1985). Flotation in a 45-kg/h (99-lb per hour) unit recovered more than 95% of the potash in schoenite and sylvite concentrates containing 28% and 62% K2O, respectively. The effects of fresh concrete into cement and aggregate by a single-step flotation process in aqueous suspension was described (Naegle, Chemical Engineering Science, 1985). The physico-chemical principles for the selective separation of proteins from mixtures using flotation were discussed by Ostermaier and Dobias (Colloids & Surfactants, 1985). Selective flocculation of hematite from silica was studied by Bagster and Mcllvenny (IJMP, 1985). Selective flocculation was more favorable with more highly charged anionic polyacrylamides and with high molecular weight. The cationic and non-ionic polymers flocculated both minerals. In minerals mixtures, there appeared to be very little selectivity unless a combination of dispersant and electrolyte was used. The effect of dissolved minerals species, such as Cu, Fe, and Ni on flocculation of chalcopyrite, pentlandite, millerite, pyrrhotite, and covellite was studied by Acar and Somasundaran (SME-AIME, 1985). Reagents There were some major advances made in reagent development for the minerals processing industry. Cyanamid introduced several classes of collectors, one of which - the diaryl monothiophosphates as acid circuit col¬lectors of sulfides and oxidesulfide ores - was commercialized in 1985. The monothiophosphates are more stable and powerful collectors than the xanthates and dithiophosphates. Hydrolyzed dithiophosphate containing 80% monothio and 20% dithiophosphate was found to give optimum recovery of copper from crude cementation precipitate and separation of Cu and Ni sulfides from matte (Akimova et al., Obogashch, Tonkov, Rud, OTR, 1985). The classification of rock and coal will assist in automated coal rib rating and shearer horizon control, and is studied with machine learning techniques in this work. A database of rock and coal images is created by filtering photographs taken by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The classifier was trained with patches extracted from the coal and rock images, and an accuracy score of 0.9 was obtained. The trained classifier was then applied to classify rock from a new coal rib image with three rock layers of different thicknesses, and good agreement was achieved. The results demonstrate that it is promising to use machine learning techniques and rib images for rock and coal classification.

Hang-ups are a challenging operational problem in block caving mines. They interrupt ore flow and imply hang-up removal activities, which take time, increase operational costs, and involve safety risks for workers. In block caving, the number of hangup events of mechanical arches that appear in the drawbell could be decreased if the drawbell geometry is adequately designed based on the expected rock fragmentation. Here, we compile and analyze hang-ups reported in several block caving mines to evaluate the impact of drawbell geometry, rock size, and vertical load on hang-up frequency at the mine scale. Results show that the ratios between drawbell length and d80 (dL/d80), between drawbell width and d80 (dW/d80), between drawbell volume and rock volume (VDB/VP), and vertical stress are critical parameters that define hang-up frequency. These findings confirm previous experimental studies, where a decrease in hang-up events is associated with an increase in these ratios. Additionally, these outcomes are used in a support vector machine algorithm to define categories of hang-up frequency. The results of this classification algorithm are presented in diagrams, which can be used to estimate the hang-up frequency in block caving projects.

At long last, mining is on the rebound in Minnesota?s Iron Range and the excitement is starting to show. The SME Minnesota Section?s annual meeting was once again held in the heart of Iron Range country, at the Duluth Entertainment and Conference Center on the Duluth waterfront. The conference boasted a record attendance of 475 people and its largest-ever trade show. While the early years of the 21st century were very good to the Iron Range, the global drop in commodities prices and production left many companies reeling and brought back bad memories of the collapse of the industry in the 1980s. However, two years of solid growth and a rebound to above pre-2008 production levels have let the Minnesota mining industry to relax a little and talk seriously about long-term growth and stability.
