The Tunnel of Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri, spanning 6.05 miles, will be Latin America’s longest road tunnel, is currently under construction in Colombia’s Antioquia Department with a single bidirectional tube connected to a parallel rescue tube through multiple cross-passages. The study faces challenges in implementing the prescriptive semitransversal ventilation system due to design restrictions. Different ventilation concepts are eplored to nd the most suitable system for regular operation and re scenarios. A quantitative ris assessment evaluates each alternative system and identies the longitudinal ventilation system, accompanied by ris mitigation measures, as the safest choice, since it surpasses the prescribed semitransversal ventilation concept.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion project in coastal Virginia, USA will add two 1.5-mile (2.4 km) TBM bored tunnels alongside two existing immersed-tube tunnels between artificial islands. The site’s unusual constraints and the requirements of a large-diameter variable-density TBM shaped the design-builder’s decisions for handling TBM inputs and outputs, siting the TBM plant and supporting equipment, and sequencing tunnel-construction operations. This paper addresses the logistics necessary to enable key functions of the 46-ft (14-m) TBM and its ancillary equipment, including transport of most materials by barge, U-turn of the TBM on an artificial island, and delivery of materials for the second tunnel through the first one while interior structures are under construction.

"Talc formed by hydrothermal alteration of preexisting carbonate rocks is known to be nearly monomineralic, and lacking in amphiboles. In southwest Montana, talc formed from hydrothermally altered dolomitic marbles, and is still actively mined. These talc deposits are typically in contact with quartzofeldspathic gneiss and marble. Accessory minerals vary between these rocks and the ore producing body; the identification and characterization of such minerals requires carefully selected analytical methods. Recent litigation and ensuing confusion over the petrology and asbestos content of these deposits challenges the talc mining industry in Montana, and elsewhere in the world. INTRODUCTION Commercial talc has been mined from the deposits in southwest Montana since the 1940s, and by 1956 the region had output 200,000 tons of talc ore (Chidester et al., 1964). Commercial talc refers to rocks containing more than 20% of the mineral talc (McCarthy et al., 2006); the ores from Montana typically contain upwards of 90% talc. This region remains the leading domestic source of talc in the U.S. partly due to the reserves in the area, and partly due to the diagnostic purity of the ore compared to that of other regions, some of which are no longer actively mined. The mineral talc, a sheet silicate, is expressed by the formula Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, and therefore can form in geologic environments that are rich in Mg, Si, O and water. The protolith for the talc deposits in southwest Montana is a dolomitic marble, but other common protoliths include ultramafic igneous, mafic igneous, and siliceous dolomites (McCarthy et al., 2006). Physical properties such as hardness of 1 on Mohs hardness scale, white streak and slippery feel are among some of the reasons why talc is so widely used as fillers in a number of industries. In decreasing order, ceramics, paper, paint, roofing, plastics, rubber, and cosmetics are the leading domestic industries that use talc despite the decreasing trend in U.S. talc use and production since 1994 (Virta, 2015). The purpose of this paper is to describe the mechanism of talc formation in southwest Montana by focusing on talc deposits and surrounding rocks in the Ruby, Greenhorn, and the Gravelly Ranges, and to relate the mechanism of formation to the composition of talc ores. The compositional data show mineral content of selected ores, and the major and trace element content of those minerals, specifically talc. Our electron microprobe (EPMA), powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray fluorescence data for samples from five mines in these three ranges provide continued evidence of the purity of these ores despite claims made during recent litigation that these ores contain asbestos. The five mines that we discuss include the Beaverhead, Treasure, Regal, Willow Creek, and Yellowstone Mines (Figure 1.)"

"The Sangan iron-ore mines (SIOM) in Iran are located in a remote area, near the Afghanistan border. The deposit of SIOM is containing a geological resource of 1.2 billion tons of mostly magnetite with a Fe grade ranging from 27 to 61 %. The Iranian government plans a stepwise development of SIOM in cooperation with private companies to satisfy the growing demand of the Iranian steel industry. Sustainable development (SD) is an influential ethical concept in mining all around the world. However, a successful realization of a SD is not possible without a foundation on the core values and regarding the specific circumstances of the individual mining country. This paper introduces SIOM and describes SD activities undertaken during its development. From the early stages, these activities have been realized to secure the acceptance of the stakeholders in the region. To evaluate their effects, indicators could be filtered as the ones with the highest priority for the stakeholders. Moreover Islamic values and Iranian regulations and their influences on SIOM have been analyzed. Keywords: Iran, Sustainable Mining, SIOM, Evaluation, Islamic Values INTRODUCTION Mining Industry in Iran The Islamic Republic of Iran holds 68 types of minerals, including salt, sand and gravel, gypsum, chrome, lead, zinc, copper, coal, gold, iron etc., with 37 billion tons of proven reserves and more than 57 billion tons of potential reservoirs. Iran is ranked among the 15 major mineral rich countries (1). In accordance with the statistics published by Statistical Center of Iran (SCI), there were 5.316 active mines and 84.922 employees in the whole country in 2012-13 (2) and according to the statistics published by Central Bank of Iran (CBI) in 2011 the share of this sector in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country was 1.2 per cent (3). Sangan Iron Ore Mines (SIOM) The deposit of SIOM is one of the largest iron-ore deposits in Iran, also considered to be one of the Middle East’s richest deposits, which contains a total geological resource of 1.2 billion tons of mostly magnetite with a Fe grade ranging from 27 to 61%. It is located 300 km southeast from Mashhad, the capital of Khorasan-e-Razavi Province, and 18 km northeast of Sangan town, in Khaf County, at latitude N34°24’, longitude E60°16’ in the north-eastern Khorasan-e-Razavi Province, 30 km west of the Afghanistan border (4) (Figure 1). SIOM is owned by the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development & Renovation Organization (IMIDRO). IMIDRO intends to develop an open pit mine complex and supporting facilities in SIOM for the production of about 20 Mtpy of iron oxide concentrate and pellets in four developing phases (5)."

Understanding the energy-size reduction relationship is vital to grinding process; therefore, this paper aims to show the energy-size reduction of magnetite-calcite binary mixture in a laboratory wet conical ball mill. Single magnetite, single calcite, and blended magnetite-calcite mixture at three weight ratios in four particle sizes were ground in a laboratory wet conical ball mill at four grinding time periods. The results showed that the particle size distribution of both fine particles and coarse particles of single and mixture ground product fitted well with the PSD computed by Rosin–Rammler-Benne function. The larger mass percentage of calcite is, the higher t10 of binary mixture ground product is. On the contrary, t10 in the mixture decreases as the percentage of magnetite in the mixture increases. The different breakage behaviors in blended samples are due to the hardness and particle size. The results of calculated ratio of energy absorption factor showed that the calcite consumed more energy in the breakage process of binary mixture than ground alone. The JK size-dependent breakage model based on the t10 method fits all the experiment data, be it generated from pure minerals, mixtures at different weight ratios, or each component separated from the mixture.

HISTORIACAL INTRODUCTION Mineral processing has three principle branches, to quote Taggart, "Ore Dressing, which comprises the methods of separation of solids in inorganic crude by means which do not affect substantial chemical change; Extractive Metallurgy, which utilizes chemical reactions for separations of constituents from solids in inorganic crude; and, Fuel Technology, which employs both physical and chemical methods for separating and rearrangement of liquid gaseous and solid components in crude oil and natural gas, tar sands, shale oil, or coal." The scope of this handbook covers the first two classifications, that is, "ore dressing" and "extractive metallurgy," which have been combined in one term: "mineral processing." For a brief history of the development of mineral processing, one could well refer to the Introduction, Sec. I of the Handbook of Mineral Dressing by Taggart, Froth Flotation, Principles of Mineral Dressing by Gaudin, and the original Richard's Ore Dressing, volume No. 1, first published in 1903-1905. In these references and the references given in them a coverage of the history of "ore dressing" can be found and studied at the reader's leisure. For the history of extractive metallurgy as well as ore dressing, the bibliography in General References, taken from a History of Ex¬tractive Metallurgy by F. Habashi, will give a good background for those who are interested in more detail on the history of metallurgy in general. Mineral processing covers a very wide field as is illustrated by the topics discussed in Part II of this handbook and dates back to the early history of man which started with the production and use of native minerals such as gold, silver, copper, mercury, and meteoric iron which were washed or picked from deposits on the surface of the earth and worked because of their malleability. Later, melting was discovered and then it was possible to cast objects of these metals, excluding mercury. The discovery of a method for reducing the metal¬lic oxide probably was developed from melting fragments of oxides or roasted sulfides with charcoal, so that the native metal could be produced in simple blast furnaces such as are used today in rural parts of Spain, China, and elsewhere. The recovery of silver and gallium from flue dust with acidified thiourea solutions was examined. The studied parameters were temperature, particle size, thiourea concentration, acid concentration, and the presence of oxidants. The study of the extraction of these two metals was undertaken in sulfuric acid medium. Silver dissolution was dependent on all examined parameters, whereas gallium extraction was only dependent on the initial acid concentration. The experimental results suggest a new very efficient method for recovery of both silver and gallium. Almost complete recovery of silver and gallium can be accomplished within 90 minutes. A technological scheme for recovery of both metals is also proposed.

The lanthanon compounds are becoming increasingly more important for ceramic and allied applications. As the supply increases and the cost decreases, further development of these interesting materials will undoubtedly lead to new applications and an increased demand. Recent improvements in separation processes have lead to high purity in the individual lanthanon oxides. This report includes short discussions on the mineralogy of the ores as raw materials, and on the separation processes required to produce the pure individual lanthanon oxides in useful quantities. "Sound Transit’s East Link Project, a $3.7 billion (2015 $), 14-mile light rail extension, will connect downtown Seattle with the rapidly developing east side cities of Bellevue and Redmond. Among the most technically challenging aspects of the Project is the 2,435 foot long Downtown Bellevue Tunnel (DBT), which will be constructed through the central core of Bellevue underneath 110th Avenue NE using a combination of Sequential Excavation Methods (SEM) and cut and cover tunneling. The 1,980 foot long central SEM component of the DBT will be mined at shallow depth through challenging and complex geology, comprised of glacially overconsolidated soils, containing both regional and perched groundwater conditions and in close proximity to existing high rise buildings. The paper shares lessons learned from the planning decisions and risk based approach to the investigation, design and procurement processes which shaped the DBT configuration and enabled a successful transition to the project’s construction stage. INTRODUCTION The East Link Project is a voter-approved $3.7 billion (2015 $), 14-mile extension of the existing Sound Transit (ST) light rail transit (LRT) system from downtown Seattle, across Lake Washington via I-90, to the cities of Bellevue and Redmond on the east side of Lake Washington. With targeted completion in 2023, East Link will provide riders with an efficient and reliable connection between the largest population and employment centers on the east side and downtown Seattle. The project alignment is indicated in Figure 1 below.ST completed the Preliminary Engineering (PE) phase of the East Link project in late 2011. Subsequently the final design contract for the easternmost seven miles of the project was awarded to the H-J-H Team, a joint venture comprised of HNTB, Jacobs Engineering and Hatch Mott MacDonald in February 2012. H-J-H’s final design scope includes approximately 7 miles of double-track LRT between the east end of the I-90 East Channel Bridge and the Overlake Transit Center Station. While the project scope is extensive and diverse, the focus of this paper is the DBT. The DBT is located immediately north of the East Main Station, and travels approximately one half mile through downtown Bellevue under 110th Avenue NE between Main Street and NE 6th Street; terminating at the Downtown Bellevue Transit Center (BTC) Station. The location and extent of the DBT is indicated in Figure 2."

The Hurtières Tunnel was built in 1995 with drill and blast method, in metamorphic schist. It is located between Lyon and Torino on the A 43 motorway in the French Alps. During the construction, a geological hazard was encountered, which caused a massive ground collapse. The tunnel was filled up with 3,000 m3of glacial materials. Geological investigations realized after the accident showed that a narrow glacial valley was present at this location the water table was 40 m above the tunnel level. The paper will describe the collapse and the remedial methods which were implemented to proceed through the failure area. These included drainage works,2,000 m3 grouting and 6,200 ml jet grouting columns.

Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. Mineral Processing Wastes, as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has determined that most of the mine wastes will be regulated pursuant to subtitle D (Solid Waste Regulations) of the Solid Waste Disposal Act while specific mine waste categories will be regulated within the framework of the Toxic Substance Control Act. Though EPA's determination currently relieves the industry of the regulatory constraints mandated by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (Hazardous Waste Regulations) Subtitle C regulatory framework; the industry is not granted immunity from historical or current environmental regulations related to listed or characteristically hazardous or solid wastes. Because of the current regulatory trends and the need to implement cost effective remediation alternatives; advanced currently available on-site remediation technologies are available to minimize, reduce, contain or prevent environmental impacts related to mining and processing activities. In light of industry technical needs, an overview of the research and commercially available remediation technologies will be discussed and a brief discussion of the strengths and weakness of each technology will be presented. Technologies to be discussed includes stabilization, solidification, soil wash, soil flush, thermal distillation, pump and treat, metal extraction, centrifuges, filter presses, bioremediation, and incineration.

"Miners worldwide use a tremendous amount of energy in producing finished minerals for the end user market. In accomplishing this goal, they incur energy costs that can range from 20% to 30% of the total cost of production, so there is fertile ground for cost savings. To unlock this huge value in cost reduction, energy analysis is the key and is broken into several segments: 1. Fuel analysis for power generation 2. Energy supply & demand 3. Opportunity cost for lack of power 4. Backup power 5. Power contracts 6. Energy efficiency 7. Renewable energy 8. Continuous energy management FUEL ANALYSIS FOR POWER GENERATION What is the first thing we evaluate when looking at power supply alternatives for the mining industry’s large power requirements? Is it 1) site, 2) engineering, procurement, and construction companies, 3) independent power producers, 4) turbine vendors, 5) grid connections, or 6) fuel supply, logistics, and infrastructure? In evaluations of power supply alternatives for mining companies with special emphasis in developing countries, there is one over-riding conclusion: reliable fuel supply drives the energy generation economic engine. Evaluating several different fuels including liquefied natural gas (LNG), natural gas, diesel, heavy fuel oil, and liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) among others, the best project outcomes are those where fuel supply, pricing, logistics, and infrastructure are given an extensive amount of time during the analysis stage. In an assessment of the twenty-year costs of generating power from multiple fuels, each fuel’s costs were placed into three separate net present value (NPV) buckets of: 1) capital, 2) operating and maintenance, and 3) fuel. Within a range of 65% to 85% for all fuels, fuel cost was the largest component of the NPV of the life cycle power generation costs. So if 65% to 85% of your life cycle power generation cost is one item, shouldn’t miners spend a corresponding amount of time in the analysis stage fully understanding this key determinant for a successful power project? In developing countries where power generation infrastructure may not exist or does not exist at the same level as is found in North America and Europe, fuel analysis becomes even more important. One of the key questions for fuel importation in developing countries is the draft at existing ports to allow larger vessels to dock at the jetty. Can larger ocean-going tankers dock at the port for off-loading, or is the port’s draft too shallow, thus forcing a Single Point Mooring (SPM) system or Conventional Buoy Mooring (CBM) system to be constructed at substantial capital expense? Once fuel can be imported, sufficient onshore storage capacity should exist, or must be built to off-load the entire fuel cargo from the larger ships. Additionally, the throughput capacity of the pipeline from SPM/CBM must allow a rapid unloading of the fuel from ship to shore to eliminate steep demurrage costs for the project."

The case study assessed submicron aerosols at a continuous miner (CM) section, diesel aerosol concentrations at the longwall (LW) section, and elemental carbon (EC) and total carbon (TC) exposures. Aerosols at CM sections were a mix of freshly generated and those from main drifts. Low ambient concentrations and personal exposures suggest effective control strategies, with further reductions possible by curbing emissions from high-emitting light-duty vehicles.

"Ongoing research is being conducted to evaluate secondary support performance in longwall ventilation entries. In a three-entry longwall gateroad, secondary supports are applied in the #2 entry to maintain a functional airway for the entirety of second panel mining. This airway represents a pathway for contaminated mine air to travel from the longwall tailgate to the mine bleeder system. The ground response curve concept may be used as a design basis for selection of appropriate secondary support in these ventilation entries. Two types of secondary supports are monitored for load and convergence in this project. These monitored supports are pumpable crib supports and interlocking wood crib supports. To evaluate the effect of support density, two installation patterns are monitored for each support type. Both a single-row, protected airway pattern and double-row, full entry support pattern are monitored for each support type. Load and displacement data is collected for all support patterns as second panel mining retreats past instrumentation sites. Data is collected for approximately 200-feet inby the second panel face or as long as safely possible. Load and convergence data collected will be used to calibrate numerical models that will simulate ground response curves for the #2 entry inby the second panel face.INTRODUCTIONWhen a bleeder ventilation system is used, the #2 entry of a three-entry longwall gateroad system is designed to function as a pathway for contaminated air from a longwall face to the bleeder system during second panel mining. The #2 entry is subject to substantial ground movement and loading during its function as an air course because it is a single entry between two longwall gobs. Secondary support is regularly applied in this entry to maintain air course functionality during second panel mining.Research on performance and design of secondary supports has been conducted extensively over the last 30 years (Barczak and Gearhart, 1993; Barczak and Gearhart, 1994; Mucho, Barczak, and Dolinar, 1999). This research has focused heavily on the application of secondary support in longwall tailgate, with little research on the application of secondary support in bleeders or other ventilation entries (Mirabile and Westman, 2018). Secondary supports in #2 entry are likely to experience similar loading and ground movement as those applied in the tailgate entry. However, the designed lifespan of the mine entry and the definition of acceptable ground conditions differs from mine entries where more extensive research has been conducted."

"The Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program was developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to help the U.S. coal mining industry to design safe retreat room and pillar panels. ARMPS calculates the magnitude of the in-situ and mining-induced loads by using geometrical computations and empirical rules. In particular, the program uses the “abutment angle” concept in calculating the magnitude of the abutment load on pillars adjacent to a gob.In this paper, stress measurements from U.S. and Australian mines with different overburden geologies with varying hard rock percentages were back analyzed. The results of the analyses indicated that for depths less than 650 ft, the ARMPS empirical derivation of a 21° abutment angle was supported by the case histories; however, at depths greater than 650 ft, the abutment angle was found to be significantly less than 21°. In this paper, a new equation employing the panel width to overburden depth ratio is constructed for the calculation of accurate abutment angles for deeper mining cases.The new abutment angle equation was tested using both ARMPS2010 and LaModel for the entire case history database of ARMPS2010. The new abutment angle equation to estimate the magnitude of the mining-induced loads used together with the LaModel program was found to give good classification accuracies compared to ARMPS2010 for deep cover cases.INTRODUCTIONIn the early 1990s, the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) was introduced by Mark (1990) as a chain pillar design software and was generally accepted and used by the U.S. coal mining industry. Following the success of ALPS, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program for designing retreat mining pillars using a similar approach as ALPS (Mark and Chase, 1997). The Australian mining industry also recognized the success of ALPS, and Colwell, Frith, and Mark (1999) calibrated the program to Australian conditions. The ALPS and ARMPS programs draw their strengths from the large databases that are used to calibrate them (Mark, 2009). However, following the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse in 2007, NIOSH had to reconsider the pillar design criteria used in deep-cover retreat mining (Mark, 2010). The ARMPS overburden load prediction algorithm was improved to more accurately predict the loading of narrow panels with high overburden depths by implementing the pressure arch concept, and this new version is called ARMPS2010."

A technique is described for the solvent extraction of zirconium. In this method, zirconium has been extracted quantitatively from 0.005 M sodium salicylate solution at pH 2.5 - 3 using 0.01 M triphenylphosphine oxide dissolved in toluene as an extractant. Zirconium has also been recovered quantitatively from 0.2 M potassium thiocyanate solution, but extractions in nitric and hydrochloric acids (as media) were negligible. The resulting extracted metal ion has been stripped with sulfuric acid (0.5 M) and determined with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. This method has been applied successfully to achieve 95% recovery of zirconium from zircon concentrate.

Hypochlorite leaching system is a strong oxidizing solution for metal sulfides, which are naturally associated with gold extraction. This study evaluated the hypochlorite leaching of refractory gold ore by using the response surface method–central composite design (RSM-CCD) as a statistical approach in determining the optimum condition of gold extraction from refractory gold ore. The studied parameters for the gold recovery were pH (4 to 6), concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 (0.5 to 1.5 M) and NaCl (2.5 to 3.5 M) in the solution. It was found that the maximum gold extraction of 82.46% (13.85 g/t) was achieved at a pH of 4.0 with NaCl and Ca(OCl)2 concentrations of 2.93 M and 1.08 M, respectively. The statistical analysis also revealed that the amount of gold recovery in chloride solution was significantly depended on pH as the main factor, followed by concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 and NaCl.

In the fully mechanized top caving mining of steeply inclined, extra-thick seams with variable angles, the mechanisms of roof rock movement, failure, caving and filling are highly complex. This is due to the varying angle of coal seam in different areas, which makes rock–equipment stability control challenging. In this paper, the surrounding rock deformation and failure mechanisms, bearing structure of the overburden, and working characteristics of the supports are elucidated. The principle and key technologies of rock–equipment stability control are presented and applied to control the overburden of the regional failure and realize safe and efficient mining of the working face.
