The higher stress zone adjacent to an underground opening causes a velocity anomaly that can be mapped in favorable conditions with an acoustic cross-borehole logging system. Bureau personnel used a specialized system at the Colorado School of Mines test site near Idaho Springs, Colorado, to locate the Edgar Mine tunnel and its associated stress anomaly. Data from the logging system' were processed with a tomographic image reconstruction algorithm to map the opening and the location of the high velocity zone around the opening. The velocity imagery from tomographic analysis compared favorably with predictions from numerical modelling of the location of the stress anomaly.

Unfavourable climatic conditions in stopes are of significant economic and social importance due to the following reasons: - Working effect is much lower leading to decreased output and work productivity disregarding implementation of mechanization. - Manpower operating capability decreases much faster under unsatisfactory climatic conditions. Under normal climatic conditions a workman would expend much less effort in line with a shorter effective time for the achievement of identical production effects since the work would be more efficacious. The objective of study of problems and climatic conditions is to make the working environment in mines suitable for normal development of operations. Lowering of mining works to increasing depths and winning of a growing number of small orebodies over a broad area makes the problem of creating suitable climatic circumstances more complex. Mining costs are growing due to bench conditions in line with decreasing metal content in the ore, so frequently the investments required for creating favourable climatic conditions represent, in addition to the selection of mining technology, a very important parameter when making decisions regarding exploitation. As known, the basic factors affecting climatic operating conditions in mines-are: temperature, humidity and speed of air flow, implying that the climatic operating conditions are closely related to mine ventilation. Usually, the concept of unfavourable climatic operating conditions includes increased mine air temperature and humidity and low air flow velocity so that heat exchange between human organism and the working environment is impeded or reduced to minimum. Metal mines in Yugoslavia are characterized by the existence of a large number of active faces - stopes and horizons and lowering of mining operations to increasing depths, so that face ventilation solutions are more and more complex. Since its foundation (1961), our Institute is engaged in investigation of factors influencing climatic circumstances improvement of calculations for air distribution and distribution control in complex ventilation networks and study of problems related to ventilation of large volume and irregular configuration faces, as well as application of gained knowledge in our mines. As the demand for most industrial minerals on the world market continues to climb, educational institutions maintain traditional policy in emphasizing chiefly metallic ore deposits and energy resources in addition to the general disciplines. In spite of their increasing importance, few universities exhibit great depth with respect to industrial minerals courses due to the shortage of specialized faculty in a category this broad. As new ideas are formulated and technological advances are developed in the field of industrial minerals, the classroom still exists as a student's primary source of information. This opportunity to give today's students the benefit of modern developements has not been utilized to its utmost potential.

Since 1945 the world's iron ore industry has experienced radical change. This transformation is reflected in new levels of production, consumption and trade, in shits in the location and size of markets, in the tapping of far distant sources of iron ore, and in the emergence of new export centres catering on an increasing scale to ore deficient, importing countries. Within the broad framework of shifting supply/demand relationships, certain operationally meaningful adjustments can be singled out for special mention: 1. The iron and steel industry has undergone vigorous and aggressive expansion, during the post-war period, not only in the capitalist world and among the socialist bloc, but in backward regions as well. New countries have been added to the list of steel producers, while new facilities have been relocated by established steel makers. 2. Overall demand for iron ore has risen rapidly, arid has flowed different channels.

"From 1998-2002 the world's leading mining and metals companies developed the Global Mining Initiative (GMI) to understand their industry's role in the transition to sustainable development and to ensure its long-term contribution to sustainable development (SD). Since then, the industry has come a long way: For example, operational safety and health have improved significantly, environmental management systems and impact assessments have become the norm, community relations have been established, many mining companies report annually on their contributions to SD and the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) has taken on the recommendations of the GMI as an industry association. However, since the GMI the concept of sustainable development has been evolving from a rather generic and loose definition (“weak sustainability”), to an absolute and strict definition of sustainability, based on the boundaries of our planet (“strong sustainability”). Similarly, other concepts such as corporate social responsibility (CSR) have evolved and even deviated from their initial intentions. This paper presents results from a literature review looking at how far this transition has moved from a scientific debate towards becoming mainstream. Furthermore, it explores, by using qualitative comparison analysis, if the current efforts of the large mining companies are still sufficient or if the industry is again at risk of falling behind societal expectations and hence should once again come together - for a GMI 2.0 - in order to update its approach. We conclude that the mining industry, whilst in a “weak sustainability” position and behind the peer group on climate change and natural capital considerations, is aligned with current societal expectations, expressed through the Sustainable Development Goals, and therefore there is no need for a GMI 2.0 at present."

Much progress has been made in the application of geostatistics to hard rock ore deposits.1,2,3 4,8 Progress in the application of geostatistics to coal deposits has developed over a period of time out of hard rock technology.5,7 Exploratory drilling in many hard rock deposits is frequently significantly more productive than exploratory drilling in coal deposits. For example, hundreds of feet of drilling and/or many drill setups are frequently necessary to obtain a few samples from a typical 4 to 6 foot thick coal seam. With hard rock deposits, which are frequently thick or volumetric, less drilling dead work is involved in sampling the deposit. To produce a variogram, which is the basic element needed for geostatistical analysis, a few well positioned holes drilled into a hard rock deposit where the core(s) can be divided into many sections can produce a detailed variogram. To produce a similar type variogram in coal, it is necessary to drill many dozens of holes with much of the core length consisting of overburden data which is frequently of only secondary importance. To apply geostatistics to coal, not only are many separate sample sites needed, but frequently a problem exists in that the interval distance between samples cannot be controlled with the ease that hard rock drilling intervals can be controlled where it is only necessary to cut core segments according to some preassigned interval of distance. Because the uses of existing coal deposit samples are frequently handicapped by irregular sample distances and lack of sampling density along certain directions needed for the development of variograms, the application of geostatistics to coal deposits frequently does not proceed with the same efficiency and rapidity as when these techniques are applied to ore deposits. Grid-fitting was developed by the writers, as a logical and evolutionary improvement over the long and successful application of geostatistics to coal seams.6,9 Grid-fitting combines the trending of variance as well as other aspects of probability theory to optimize informational yields from the commonly less productive data derived from coal exploratory programs. Grid-fitting is basically a technique where a hypothesis involving numerous grid patterns, where each pattern is of a given geometry, size and direction is repeatedly matched against actual sample data to determine which match results in the closest fit of the hypothesis to the data. To determine the closest fit, a special index known as a selectivity index was developed. The selectivity index is basically the product of the mean and variance of the variances contained within each of the grids. hence, if SI is the selectivity index then [SI = Xs E (S i - Xs) /N] where [X]s is the mean of individual grid variances Si2 for any pattern of given geometry, direction and size.

"The support pressure of a slurry shield corresponds to the in situ earth and groundwater pressure to ensure the stability of the tunnel face. The support fluid (bentonite suspension) penetrates from the excavation chamber into the pore space and transfers the support pressure to the granular structure of the soil within this zone. At the same time, the cutting tools rotate periodically with the cutting wheel and remove the penetrated soil up to a certain cutting depth at the face. Shortly after the tool passing, the penetration process starts again. Both, the support pressure and the soil excavation, act in the same direction at the tunnel face, but they are subject to different cyclic intervals. This relationship between the time needed for the transient penetration process and the interval of the cyclic passage of the cutting tools at a local point at the face is examined and the impact onto the global face stability is discussed. INTRODUCTION Slurry shields are usually deployed for excavations in soft ground. The main application range is in non-cohesive soils (DAUB Recommendations 2010). In non-cohesive granular soils, the tunnel face stability is one of the key design issues. The slurry shields make use of pressurized bentonite suspension (slurry) to support the unstable tunnel face. To support the tunnel face effectively, the slurry pressure has not only to counter the groundwater pressure, but also has to be transferred into an effective stress to support the soil grains. In general, the pressure transfer can be achieved in two ways: (1) with a thin flexible membrane or (2) a penetration zone. The membrane (1), called filter cake, creates a thin impermeable layer from bentonite particles directly on the tunnel face, and enables a transformation of excess slurry pressure into effective stress. In case of penetration zone formation (2), the excess slurry pressure is transferred onto the soil skeleton along the entire penetration depth by shear stresses between slurry and soil grains. These theories, presently applied to assess the pressure transfer on the grains within slurry shield tunnelling, are originating from diaphragm wall technology, e.g. Müller-Kirchenbauer (1977), Kilchert and Karstedt (1984). They assume that the support pressure transfer mechanism is built-up instantaneously on the whole tunnel face and is not damaged or influenced by the interaction with excavation tools. These assumptions are valid for conditions during the excavation of diaphragm wall trenches whose bottom is excavated and the walls of the trench are supported. At the tunnel face of a slurry shield, the support suspension acts on the same area as the soil excavation. Hence, the conditions on the tunnel face are transient (time dependent) due to the time period needed for the penetration process of the slurry and the periodical damage of the pressure transfer mechanism by excavation tools (Fig. 1a)."

During the past decade, operators and researchers have worked toward a better understanding of the mechanisms operating in flotation. As reported by W. J. Trahar in 1981, this work commenced with the operators determining a relationship between recovery and particle size. They defined three particle size ranges, that being fine, intermediate and coarse. It was noted that the fine and the coarse ranges had slower flotation rates than the intermediate range as demonstrated by their lower recoveries.

Kennecott Copper Corporation and the U. S. Bureau of Mines cooperated in a full-scale slope stability research project at the Kimbley Pit near Ely, Nevada. The west wall of the Kimbley Pit was mined from an over-all slope angle of 45° to an over-all slope angle of 57° and the pit was deepened nearly 50 feet. Mining was begun February 10, 1966, and completed October 30, 1966. Approximately 2.55 million tons of ore and waste were mined. The project was designed and carried out to learn more about the behavior of a pit wall as its slope angle is steepened and to obtain a possible insight into engineering parameters for use in design of future slopes. Data from this project are presented as obtained from (1) instruments installed in two adits for deformation and displacement measurements, (2) a subsidence network installed on the surface above the steepened wall, (3) pre- and post-mining observations of stress in rock, (4) sonic-velocity measurements, and (5) seismic and microseismic investigations. Changes occurred in measured quantities as the slope was steepened but stopped when mining was completed. Agreement was noted between the measured changes and predicted changes obtained from calculations using the finite element technique. Subsidence surveys and microseismic studies show the steepened pit wall to be stable.

Henderson Mine has been transporting molybdenum ore using a rail haulage system for the past 21 years. Due to the age of this system, limited performance, and obsolescence, a capital investment decision was imminent. Henderson used this opportunity to evaluate other transportation methods and continuously improve their mining practices. These efforts resulted in a new mine plan for Henderson, which ensures that Henderson will continue to supply high quality molybdenum into the 21st century. This paper will discuss the dramatic changes taking place at the Henderson Mine as a new production level is mined. These changes include the installation of an underground crushing, conveying, and truck haulage system, as well as increasing the scale of the panel caving process. Each of these topics will be discussed, as will their rock mechanics and material flow implications.

The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel Project in Toronto extends approximately 10.5 km from Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant west under Lake Shore Boulevard, north under Bayview Avenue and east through the Don River park area to the Coxwell Ravine Park. This project includes the installation of five intake shafts connected by 10.5 km of 6.3 m internal diameter tunnel and eleven drop shafts and vent shafts, connected to the tunnel by a series of adits. During the excavation of one of five intake shafts (20 m in diameter and 52 m deep), significant volumes of free phase oil and hydrocarbons were encountered. Due to the heavy inflows of the contaminants, excavation was stopped at the transition depth. The initial support of excavation needed to be redesigned, shaft had to be backfilled with CDF and installation of deeper secant piles are in progress to cut off contaminants. This paper outlines the initial plan for excavation as well as the design changes to the plan. The current status of the shaft excavation and lessons learned will be discussed.

Clay mineralogic studies of ore versus barren rocks in the Grants mineral belt show that some combination of chlorite (rosette form), illite, mixed layer illite-montmorillonite, (- Mg-montmorillonite) are penecontemporaneous with uranium minerals in trend ore; these same clay minerals plus kaolinite are related to the roll type ore near the main redox front of the Grants mineral belt. Clay minerals from barren rocks are characterized by a greater abundance of Na-montmorillonite, kaolinite, and face-to-edge form chlorite. Chlorites from ore zones contain much more vanadium than do chlorites from barren rocks. Trend ore probably formed from southeasterly flowing waters following paleochannels in the Late Jurassic. These deposits are found almost entirely in reduced rocks, and organic carbon may have been an important reductant to remove U-V-Se-Mo from solution as carbonate from ore zones contains some organic carbon based on stable iso¬tope studies. Uplift, remobilization and reprecipitation of some of the trend ore resulted in the formation of redistributed ore, some of which possesses a roll type geometry. Mineralization for the roll type ore was apparently controlled by sulfide-sulfate equilibria at or near the main redox front in the Grants mineral belt. Trend and roll type ore possess different assemblages of clay minerals and different trace element abundances. Laramide faults cut both trend and some roll type ore. Stack ore is found in Laramide fault zones. Limited oxygen isotopic data from clay minerals in two mines at Ambrosia Lake in reduced rocks indicate probable preservation of ancient, formational waters and no evidence for infiltration by young meteoric waters. This information, plus the pre-Laramide faults, suggest, but do not unequivocally prove, that the main redox front has been relatively stable since its formation, probably some time in the Cretaceous. Younger encroachment of the redox front in post-Laramide is proposed by others, however, and the problem is unresolved. Uranium for the deposits was most likely carried in solution as an oxyion, probably as (UO2(CO3)2.2H2O)2- or (UO2(HPO4)2)2-, although organic transport cannot be entirely ruled out. Oxyions of vanadium, selenium, molybdenum and possibly arsenic and antimony, are interpreted from Eh-pH diagrams to have been segregated and transported with U6+ soluble species and precipitated when a chemically reducing environment was reached. The rare earth elements are also enriched in ore zones, but it is not clear if they were transported with the U-V-Se-Mo-(As)-(Sb) suite or derived from a more local source.

Through the remainder of this century, world consumption of fluorine per ton of primary aluminum produced will continue to be substantially reduced. Growth of the primary industry will offset some of the unit consumption, but demand for new fluorine sources will decline sharply. Continued application of dry fume scrubbing systems will be the most significant factor in reducing demand.

New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland dominate Australian black coal production and exports. NSW produced 86 Mt (95 million st) of saleable coal in 1994, a doubling of output since 1980. Asian demand for thermal and coking coal has driven this growth. This high Asian demand is expected to continue and NSW will seek to secure its share. History The history of the New South Wales (NSW) coal industry can be traced to 1797 when coal was first taken from Newcastle to Sydney (Ellis, 1969). At that time, NSW was a British colony, independent from the other colonies, such as Victoria and Queensland. Australia, as a federation of colonies, did not exist until 1901. The Newcastle coal industry grew through the 1800s in line with the growth of the colonies. Several events spurred demand for Newcastle coal. These included: ? The NSW and Victorian gold rushes of the 1850s and associated population growth. ? The development of steamship traffic at the expense of sail. ? The development of railways and town gas supplies. By 1900, Australia was producing 6.4 Mt (7 million st) of coal, most of it from NSW. By then, NSW had established strong export markets in Indonesia, China, Japan and New Zealand. The history of energy consumption is marked by continual competition, changing intensity of use and substitution. From 1900 to 1940, the Queensland, Victorian and Indonesian coal industries developed at the expense of NSW exports. Similarly, New Zealand developed its hydroelectric industry and thus declined as the largest customer for NSW coal. Oil replaced steam in the shipping and railway markets and electricity replaced gas for lighting. Industrial efficiencies also affected coal. Between 1928 and 1938, coal consumed in generating power fell from by 17% on a kilowatt hour basis and, during the same period, the amount of gas produced per ton of coal rose by 18% (Shaw and Bruno). Faced with these pressures, production and exports stagnated. By 1941, Australian black coal production was 14.2 Mt (15.6 million st). NSW's production was 11.7 Mt (12 million st), up only 19% from 1912. Exports had virtually ceased (Fig. 1). In such circumstances, the industry had lost focus. An arsenal of isotopic techniques is avail-able that can date the full range of hydrothermal ore deposits. The following are prerequisites for ideal results: (1) Careful collection of samples that are related to the event in a field and process context; (2) Optical examination of the component selected for dating to be sure that it has not been altered; (3) Careful preparation of a pure component of the sample selected for dating; (4) Precise and accurate measurement; (5) Knowledgeable interpretation of the data with reference to decay systematics, properties of the component analyzed as well as the field context and thermochemical environment of the ore process.

Environmental due diligence investigations, also known as Phase I Environmental Audits, are increasingly important to major investors, venture partners, or prospective purchasers or sellers of mineral properties. Knowledge of environmental risks associated with a property will allow better appraisal of a property's overall desirability prior to completing the transaction. It is possible that the cost of environmental cleanup could exceed the value of the property. Topics appropriately investigated include permit status, water quality, past use of the property, hazardous materials management, storage tanks, public records pertaining to the environmental character of the property, and environmental costs.

In cooperation with analytical laboratories, experienced geochemical exploration scientists and mining companies a systematic collection procedure has been developed. The procedure consists of collecting uncontaminated, water, sediment and rock chip samples of the appropriate quantity and/or dimensions to meet the needs of analysis.

"Mining of ore bodies that are located at great depths enforces long distances to move the excavated rock masses to the surface. The excavated rock mass contains not only ore that can be economically extracted from the face but also waste, which is usually discarded several steps further downstream in the process. As a result, a large amount of rock is transported to the surface, influencing the costs at which the ore is produced. Reducing the amount of waste rock being transported to the surface by introducing a near-to-face sorting plant would improve the in many cases strained transport system in the deep mine. In this study, one of Boliden’s cut-and-fill mines was analysed with respect to the challenges related to rock transportation and increasing mining depth. The study aims to evaluate the potential use of a new near-to-face sorting system in the operating underground mine. Discrete event simulation was used to study and analyse the rock transportation system with and without the near-to-face sorting plant. The paper shows how the underground rock transportation system and the production were influenced when the near-to-face sorting equipment was added into the current system. INTRODUCTION The locations of waste rejection in the mining processes and the cost of removing waste from the system compared with the cost and energy necessary for further comminution are important parts in the material handling system (Bowman and Bearman, 2014). In an underground mine, longer material transportation distances generate the need for further investment in the mobile fleet and ancillary equipment in order to reduce the waste from the material handling as early as possible. One of the ways of reducing the waste (coarse particle size) in material handling is by use of pre-concentration. The benefits of pre-concentration are well known (Schena et al. 1990; Feasby, 1995; Peters et al. 1999; Klein et al. 2002), as well as the factors governing the feasibility of underground pre-concentration (Peters et al., 1999) and the mining integration issues (Klein et al. 2003). In the Onaping Depth orebody in Sudbury, Ontario the study of implementing the pre-concentration resulted in increased capital costs of 6% and a reduction in the operating costs of between 20-40% (Bamber et al, 2004). In this paper, the effects on the production and the transportation system of implementing underground pre-concentration by means of a near-to-face ore sorting plant in the Kristineberg mine are modeled and analyzed using the AutoMod tool. This tool is based on discrete event simulation (DES) (Banks, 2004), allowing high flexibility in customization and enabling the user to view the production of the system before ore sorting plant integration. The sorting plant selected in the simulation is built from modules. The material is fed by conveyor and goes through the comminution, classification, sorting and service processes after which the waste is redirected to backfill headings via trucks. The system mechanically ejects the particles from the feed stream on the basis of the information obtained from both the XRT sensor’s signal and 3D laser scanner based on both density and rate of refraction of light within a particular mineral. The sorting plant could pre-concentrate the metal ore up to 300 mm size. The plant requires little auxiliary infrastructure, is easily modularized for underground installation and can be easily relocated to different areas."
