"The U.S. Geological Survey and Natural Resources Canada conducted a study on the net import reliance of each North American country, and the impact of North American trade on the net import reliance of 12 nonfuel mineral commodities that are associated with advanced technology products: cadmium, cobalt, gallium, germanium, graphite, indium, lithium, nickel, rare earth elements, selenium, silver and tellurium. The combined results for North America, using 2014 data, showed greatly reduced net import reliance for nearly all of the commodities evaluated, which is largely the result of pooling the resources of production and recovery in Canada and Mexico of materials that are consumed in the United States. This study highlights the mitigation of potential supply risk for critical materials that results from trade within the North American trade bloc. IntroductionMultiple metrics and definitions exist for what constitutes a critical material, but there is broad acknowledgment that a mineral commodity may be considered critical if, among other factors, its production is geographically concentrated, if it has few or no substitutes, or if the country of origin is politically unstable. Numerous governmental and independent researchers have proposed methods of investigating criticality, with differing priorities such as economic resilience or strategic military supplies (European Commission, 2014; Graedel et al., 2015; U.S. National Science and Technology Council Subcommittee on Critical and Strategic Mineral Supply Chains, 2016). While criticality really depends on who is asking the question, and despite the differing priorities, there are several commodities that are commonly found to be of concern. In particular, some critical or potentially critical materials are used increasingly in advanced technologies, or they have complicated supply chains because they are coproduced or are produced in controlled markets.Commodities for which imports are required to satisfy domestic demand are those for which the importing country is net import reliant. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on a dual leaching method that offers the potential for the economic recovery of the silver as well as the manganese contained in some of the domestic manganiferous silver deposits. The method is an initial leach of the manganese with aqueous SO2 followed by a neutralization rinse, and then by a second leach for the extraction of silver with cyanide solution. Refractory silver in these ores is either bound by the high-valence manganese, chemically resistent to cyanide leaching, or is rendered inaccessible to cyanide leach solution by the surrounding manganese mineralization. Less than 10 pct of the silver was extracted when -1 in +1/2 in (-2.5 cm + 1.3 cm) ore pieces were leached directly with cyanide. However, extractions of 25 to 82 pct for silver and 65 to 96 pct for manganese were attained in laboratory column leach tests using the dual method on the same size ore pieces from six domestic deposits.

It is the task of this portion of today's session on the new meaning of regional tectonics in the search for ore districts to discuss known interactions of tectonics and ore deposition in the 'new global tectonics' context. I will speak particularly about known applications of the recent tectonic advances to ore finding. Stated yet another way, it's getting on in time toward the "put up or shut up" stage-¬and I would not be here if I thought that the new tectonics were not an effective present matrix for ore finding. Before delving into specific geologic relationships--and I propose to discuss mainly the evolution of an idea which may reveal the presence of a major copper deposit on mainland Mexico--I must note that there have been no published accounts that I know of which assert that a particular discovery has been made soley and specifically because of an interpretation based upon mechanisms directly linked to sea floor spreading or plate tectonics. It is nonetheless true" that several major exploration efforts are based upon such interpretations, and, as is normal when exploration ideas are involved, one does not wish to call attention to an advantageous position in a highly competitive business. Little might be expected to have been announced in so fast-moving and potentially lucrative an area. Another point which needs to be made is that people such as B. S. Butler (1933), Billingsley and Locke (1935 and 1941), Harrison Schmitt (1935), and more recently Mayo (1958) have been working for decades with the tectonic expressions of the emergent tectonics without recog¬nition of the driving forces or the unifying tectonic concepts

Establishing suitable control of pH, a requirement in a number of mineral and chemical industries, poses a difficult problem because of inherent nonlinearities and frequently changing process dynamics. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed a technique for effectively controlling such systems. This technique successfully combines the process control capabilities of fuzzy logic and the search capabilities of genetic algorithms. Fuzzy logic offers an effective mechanism for handling nonlinearities, while genetic algorithms can provide fuzzy logic controllers with real-time adaptive capabilities. This Bureau-developed technique is applied to a laboratory acid-base neutralization experiment. Nonlinearities in the laboratory system are associated with the logarithmic pH scale and the changing process dynamics are due to alterations in pH and buffering capacity input solutions. Results indicate fuzzy logic controllers augmented with genetic algorithms offer a powerful alternative to conventional process control techniques in such nonlinear, rapidly changing systems.

This paper, deals with the beneficiation of a low grade Western phosphate to ore. More specifically it summarizes the results of a study made to optimize a scrubbing step in the process, and to provide firmer data for use in plant design. The deposit is situated about 30 miles northeast of Pocatello, Idaho, in the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. It is a bedded deposit and throughout most o the orebody includes three contiguous layers of phosphatic material which differ in P205 content. The J. R. Simplot Company, as operator for a Simplot-FMC joint venture, mines the ore selectively by open pit methods The lower bed containing a nominal 30% P205 is shipped to the Simplot Company fertilizer complex near Pocatello; the middle layer averaging about 24% P205 supplies the FMC elemental phosphorus plant also near Pocatello, The top layer averaging around 16% P205 and designated as mill grade shale is stockpiled for future beneficiation. This paper is concerned with some aspects of the processing of this low grade shale.

The Sixteen-to-One Mine was originally designed and operated using Blasthole Stoping with end slicing as the primary mining method. This method changed to Modified VCR Stoping in response to efforts to control dilution. The new method combines Blasthole Stoping with shrinkage methods, pillars, and reduced sublevel intervals to provide the most practical dilution control avail- able for low cost bulk mining.

"Grade estimation is the cornerstone of longrange mine planning. Pit designs, metal recovery, mining costs, reserves calculations and reporting are all dependent upon a reliable grade model. If the geology is poorly understood or the interpolation methods and parameters have been haphazardly constructed, then massive financial losses will be the inevitable outcome. Therefore, a properly trained geologist must use all of the appropriate tools available including deposit knowledge and advances in modeling technology to construct the most geostatistically and practically sound long-range block model.Certain deposits, such as the sedimenthosted deposits at Tenke-Fungurume, require an interpolation method that best suits the style of mineralization. In 2014, Hexagon Mining developed a tool in MineSight called dynamic unfolding (MSDU) that has the potential to improve upon previous Euclidean-based interpolation methods. MSDU utilizes the nonstationarity of a folded grade trend to more accurately construct variograms and improve interpolation results based upon a modeled three-dimensional surface.Geology overview. The sediment-hosted Tenke-Fungurume mining district is located in the southeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Fig. 1). The rocks within the district are primarily dolomites and shales from the lower half of the Roan Supergroup that were mineralized by ascending pregnant copper and cobalt rich brines within a massive sedimentary basin (Cailteux et al., 2005) (Fig. 2). These oxidized brines likely found a fluid channel in the porous RSC unit. The surrounding rock units provided a redox boundary for copper and cobalt precipitation along organic rich beds, forming a massive stratabound deposit that was later broken up by several subsequent tectonic events (Dewaele et al., 2006)."

At the Sierrita mine, 40 km (25 miles) south of Tucson, Arizona, Duval Corporation is rapidly gaining operating experience with its new Portable Crushing and Conveying System, (PCCS). As of November 23, 1983, over 4.5 million tons (5.0 million st) of ore have passed through the system. Mining cost per ton for the months of July, August and September was 83% below the average for the first five months of 1983. Although all the cost reductions experienced cannot be attributed to the Portable Crusher, it was a major contributing factor. The Sierrita ore deposit has several natural topographic and geologic conditions which are not favorable to mining. It is not a sidehill deposit and therefore no low-level exit points exist to facilitate truck haulage. The ore is very hard. Quartz diorite, hardest of the three major rock types, averages 172-207 MPa (25-30 000 psi) unconfined compressive strength and may run as high as 345 MPa (50 000 psi). Blasting in this rock produces oversize material which runs approximately 20% 51 centimeters (20 inches). The ore is low grade, averaging slightly better than .30% contained copper and .035% contained molybdenum, with small amounts of silver. These conditions, plus high design production tonnages, make the Portable Crushing and Conveying System (PCCS) practical for Sierrita. Without crushing and conveying, truck haulage would be prohibitively expensive. A typical, October, 1983, ore haul from the bottom of the pit would involve a vertical lift of 260 meters (850 ft) and a horizontal distance of 3 860 meters (12 200 ft) were not in-pit crushing and conveying available. The corresponding cycle time would be nearly 32 minutes.

"A packaged cooling system is being developed for refuge alternatives (RAs) that will meet U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) qualification guidelines for deployment in coal mines. This system will allow full occupancy ratings of deployed refuge alternatives to be maintained by keeping the apparent temperature inside the RA from exceeding 35° C (95° F).Research investigations sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have shown that heat buildup caused by occupants in mobile RAs will result in apparent temperatures that exceed the 35° C (95°F) limit established in 30 CFR 7.504.Figure 1 shows the temperature rise in an inflatable RA having an occupancy rating of 23 people at an 27° C (81°F) mine air temperature. This plot shows the need for either heat mitigation or occupancy derating in warmer mines.The Refuge Alternative Environmental Control System (RAECS) will be designed to provide enough heat mitigation to eliminate occupancy derating due to heat buildup over the 96-hour refuge period.This article describes testing of a prototype cooling system that uses proven vapor compression technology powered by batteries to keep the RA interior below the 35° C (95° F) limit for a minimum of 96 hours. Testing of this prototype cooling system was conducted in December of 2015 and January of 2016 at the NIOSH test mine in Bruceton, PA. December testing was conducted at the prevailing mine ambient temperature — approximately 15.5° C (60° F). The January testing was done with the mine ambient temperature in the immediate vicinity of the RA artificially elevated to 29° C (85° F). Realistic heat gain from RA occupants was provided by human simulators developed by NIOSH. These simulators add sensible heat corresponding to human metabolic processes and latent heat generated by respiration and perspiration. Heat generated by CO2 scrubbers was also added. Results of cooling system performance using these simulated loads at the two ambient conditions are described. A comparison of the apparent temperature in the RA using two different control techniques is also presented. This work documents the ability of the cooling system to meet the established apparent temperature limit at the full occupancy rating of a six person RA. A new cooling system intended for use with existing RA deployments and having greater cooling capacity is currently in development and will be described.Expendable desiccant modules were also used to provide supplemental water vapor removal and their role in mitigating cooling load is addressed."

"In this paper, we consider an underground production scheduling problem consisting of determining the proper time interval or intervals in which to complete each mining activity so as to maximize a mine’s discounted value while adhering to precedence, activity durations, and production and processing limits. We present two different integer programming formulations for modeling this optimization problem. Both formulations possess a resource-constrained project scheduling problem structure. The first formulation uses a fine time discretization and is better suited for tactical mine scheduling applications. The second formulation, which uses a coarser time discretization, is better suited for strategic scheduling applications. We illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of each formulation with examples.IntroductionProject scheduling is an important aspect of underground mine planning that consists of determining the start dates for a given set of activities so as to maximize the value of a project while adhering to operational and re-source-availability constraints. Important activities that require scheduling include development, drilling, stoping and other ore-extraction techniques, and backfilling. Precedence relation-ships impose an order in which activities can be carried out based on their location in the mine: for example, the activity a associated with development of an area must be completed before the activity a´ associated with extraction of that same area can begin. Re-sources include attributes of the mining operation, such as the amount of extraction and mill capacity available per time period, and are determined by capital and equipment availability and other factors. In this paper, for our set-ting, resource-availability constraints consider the amounts of material that can be extracted and sent to the mill — that is, processed — per time period."

"The personal dust monitor (PDM) (model PDM3700), as well as other electronic devices, can cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) which can disrupt the operation of some proximity detection systems (PDSs). A 15 cm (6 inch) minimum separation distance between the miner-wearable component (MWC) of the PDS and the electronic device usually avoids these disruptions, but due to the amount of equipment on a miner’s belt and the method of wearing the PDM in some situations, this distance can be difficult to always reliably maintain. Another method of reducing EMI effects is utilizing magnetic field shielding. The shielding capability of several different materials was investigated by surrounding the PDM with the material and quantifying the EMI. A copper mesh pouch reduced the EMI from a PDM3700, allowing a minimum separation distance of 10 cm (4 inches) instead of 15 cm (6 inches) as shown in a previous study for an unshielded PDM. A MU-metal box had a better shielding effectiveness, as it further reduced the minimum separation distance to less than 7 cm (2.8 inches). Shielding reduced the EMI of the PDM with MU-metal providing better results than the copper mesh. These materials may be beneficial for shielding individual components of the PDM or for constructing a shielded pouch. However, before the advantages of a shielded pouch can be determined, the effects of just the shielding material (metal) on the PDS needs to be quantified. INTRODUCTION According to statistics from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 43 miners have been fatally struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine (CMM) since 1984. In an effort to prevent future striking and pinning fatalities from occurring, proximity detection systems (PDSs) have been developed and are required on all operating CMMs in underground coal mines, with the exception of full-face CMMs, by 2018 (MSHA, 2015)."

A combined heavy medium-flotation process which incorporates the advantages of two widely employed cleaning methods, namely, heavy medium separation and flotation was used to achieve improved separation of coal from ash at fine sizes and to recover the heavy medium as a substantially recyclable product. The investigation was carried out in two successive phases. In the first phase, tests were performed to deter-mine the effect of different variables such as the medium density, flotation time, magnetite type, etc. on the efficiency of the process using in-plant samples from Homer City Coal Preparation Plant. In the second phase, the optimum conditions determined in the first phase were employed to determine the applicability of the process to a few Central Pennsylvania coals. It was observed that the process was very effective in recovering the magnetite. In most of the cases investigated, the magnetite was separated from the non-magnetic material at approximate-1 to 99 % recovery with a grade ranging from 95 to 99 %. The grade of magnetite decreased with increase in ash content of coal and with decrease in size of magnetite.

"INTRODUCTION Mines are filled with a mixture of gases, some of which are toxic, flammable, explosive. Others can be early reporters of potential problems. It has previously been shown that analysis by gas chromatograph can the most accurate conventional analytical tool for common mine gas mixtures when used correctly. There are some other detection methods (e.g hand held sensors), but they do not detect many situations which are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH). Examples include explosive hydrogen mixtures, toxic carbon dioxide levels, and some explosive mixtures of methane with oxygen. (Reference our previous paper). There are several reasons for mines to consider onsite GC analysis. (1) Timeliness of results. Samples can be taken and analyzed immediately. Samples do not have to be shipped to a lab and wait for results. (2) Ability to run greater number of samples a lower for the same cost. This allows mine to increase the number of samples taken to be more informed about the gases/conditions of the mine without the worry of financial constraints. (3) Fewer sample media needed, and there is no wear and tear or cost from shipping them offsite. When samples are shipped offsite, those sample media cannot be used to take until the lab returns them when the analysis is done onsite, the sample media can be used again almost immediately. However there are several challenges associated with using GC to analyze mine gas samples onsite. To date there has been a clash of the requirements for a successful analysis, the capabilities of the technology, and the practicalities of implementation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the difficulties in getting accurate reliable data and doing so in an economic way. This whole measurement activity is a cost center for a mine, so there are economic concerns for the mine to address. These concerns are mainly staffing costs, capital costs, maintenance, and consumables costs. A properly staffed and equipped analysis lab, including burdened overhead, costs about $500K per year. At a sampling rate of 10 per day, this is about $140 per measurement for a proper onsite lab."

"The authors have proposed a unique methodology in the evaluation of rock mass stiffness for the range of five to twenty meters ahead of the tunnel face, with the use of small diameter inclinometers. The inclinometers are installed at the tunnel crown at a pre-determined constant interval, about one meter behind the face in order to obtain the slight change in inclination angles during tunnel excavation. This method was developed as a daily control measurement such that the geological condition and its possible change ahead of the face could be detected early by monitoring the trend of inclination angles. This paper describes the results of the ground stiffness ahead of the tunnel face evaluated at a mountain tunnel construction site. This stiffness is evaluated automatically and displayed visually by the current system equipped with a result display screen, together with a warning message against a weak zone when detected. 1. INTRODUCTION In a conventional planning of a mountain tunnel, according to the Japanese Standard (JSCE, 2006) seismic refraction surveys from the ground surface are performed and tunnel support patterns are then designed based on the seismic wave velocity. The resolution of the velocity profile estimated by this technique, however, is poor as the tunnel overburden becomes large. The tunnel face is therefore often encountered by unforeseeable fault zones or weak rocks. Such an unpredictable weak zone occasionally causes the collapse of the tunnel face. Clarifying the forward geological information during excavation is hence significant for safe and well-controlled construction. According to the geological conditions ahead of a face, auxiliary methods typified by forepiling and face bolting could be preliminarily prepared for prompt execution. For the purpose of acquiring forward geological information, pilot borehole drilling and seismic reflection methods represented by the TSP (Tunnel Seismic Prediction) or HSP (Horizontal Seismic Profiling) are often applied. Those exploration are carried out near the tunnel face for a couple of days. This often leads to the interruption of excavation procedure and has no small effect on the construction schedule. On the other hand, some forward ground prediction methods in the daily control measurement have been developed e.g. by Schubert et al. (1995). In this method, tunnel displacements in the direction of the tunnel axis are used together with the crown settlements. We have tested their method at a few of our tunnel projects and found difficulty in the evaluation of the forward ground condition due to insufficient resolution of the axial displacement measured by a total station theodolite that we usually use for the tunnel measurement. We have therefore developed a novel methodology of monitoring slight inclination at the tunnel crown near the face, so that the forward ground conditions can be predicted and evaluated as part of a routine measurement procedure."

Preliminary figures from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration show 801 underground metal mines and 490 surface metal mines, at the end of 1981, up from 663 and 383, respectively, in 1980. Preliminary MASH figures also show 207 underground nonmetal mines and 1070 surface nonmetal mines at the end of 1981, compared with 167 and 1092, respectively, last year. In addition, preliminary MASH figures show there were 14,676 mineral extraction operations on the surface and 3845 underground at the end of 1981, versus 14,951 and 3675, respectively, for last year. The number of mines, then, in three of four categories increased significantly, while having a lower net total of just 2% in the other category. And the number of underground extraction operations increased nearly 5% for the year, while surface operations were down less than 2%. But despite operations totals that mostly held their own or showed significant increases, it was a tough year for the nation's mining industry. The nonferrous segment of the industry had a bad year and 1982 may be no better, according to Business Week (Jan. 11, 1982), which adds that a turnaround is impossible unless the general economy recovers. Even then, with diminishing markets and overcapacity plaguing its products, the mining industry's condition "will be far from robust," the magazine says. The basic problem is that nonferrous metals-aluminum, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc-are tied to the most troubled sectors of the US economy. As recently as 1979, for example, more than 40% of all aluminum shipments went to the construction and transportation industries. Last year, these markets were down to 35% of aluminum shipments. And molybdenum sales to steel producers dropped by nearly 15% last year. Moreover, nonferrous products ended 1981 at disastrously low prices. Molybdenum oxide sold at $8.77/kg ($3.98/lb), half its $17.63/kg ($8/lb) price earlier in 1981 and aluminum was listed at $1.08/kg ($0.49/lb), compared with $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) a year earlier. The Comex price of copper was $1.54/ kg ($0.70/lb), down from $3.11/kg ($1.41/lb) in early 1980, in real terms the worst copper price in 30 years. Lower prices led operators to cut their output and increase layoffs, shut down mines, and defer capital spending projects. In December, Duval Corp., a Pennzoil Co. subsidiary, shut all four of its US copper mines until March. Aluminum Co. of America had laid off 7.3% of its work force, shut nine of its 38 smelting lines, and entered 1982 operating at only 68% of capacity. Inco Ltd., the Free World's largest nickel producer, lost money in 1981, an estimated $11 million, for the first time since 1932. And, like Falconbridge Nickel Mines and other major nickel producers, had cut back on nickel production and was operating at only 63% of capacity (Forbes, Feb. 15, 1982). Amax, the country's largest molybdenum producer, had cut production by 20%. And Hanna Mining Co. sold lead for $5.07/kg ($2.30/lb), about $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) below what it cost to produce. Another problem is that copper companies in the next few years must come to terms with problems of aging smelters. Some companies are simply closing them. In 1980, Anaconda closed its 75-year-old Butte, MT, smelter and is shipping concentrates to Japan, rather than modifying the smelter to meet environmental requirements. And oth Phelps Dodge Corp. and Asarco Inc. have antiquated smelters on which they will have to make decisions. The most troubled metal in 1982, Business Week said, will be molybdenum, with no real recovery in sight until the mid-1980s. High molybdenum prices in the late 1970s, caused in part by shortages, triggered overexpansion that will take years for the US market to soak up. On a more upbeat note, 1981 mergers might help stabilize the industry by providing funds for mining companies. Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) said it plans to spend $7 billion on Kennecott during the next 10 years for modernization and expansion. And Atlantic Richfield Co. said it will spend $500 million on Anaconda Copper Co. during the next five years. Another positive note was sounded by T. H. Adams of the United Banks of Colorado Inc. He said he expects the mining industry to experience moderate growth in 1982, led by "interest rate sensitive" demand from energy, electronics, and defense markets. And mining will be helped by "weak, but improved" construction and auto markets. The mining industry will be operating in an economy stronger than 1981, but still relatively sluggish by postwar standards, Adams predicted. Iron Ore Estimated US iron ore production in 1981 was 75.2 Mt (74 million long tons), up 6% from 70.7 Mt (69.6 million long tons) in 1980, though down from the 87.1 Mt (85.7 million long tons) produced in 1979. The mine value of usable iron produced from domestic mines was estimated at $3 billion. US iron ore was produced by 28 companies operating 35 mines, 26 concentration plants, and 16 pelletizing plants. The mines included 34 open pits and one underground mine. Lime is one of the largest volume chemicals produced in the United States. In 1979 approximately 21 million tons were produced. Lime is, in fact, second only to sulfuric acid as the largest volume basic chemical produced. Lime, also known as quick lime (calcium oxide) and hydrate lime (calcium hydroxide), is the principle alkali used in a multitude of industrial processes. In addition to its use as a principle industrial alkali, lime has experienced dramatic growth in four general market areas during the past 30 years. These four areas are: 1. Water Treatment - Lime is used extensively in treating and purifying water for industrial and potable use, Although significant tonnage is shipped to this market of municipal and industrial water treatment plants, the end-users are widely spread geographically and individual shipments are relatively low tonnage. In order to patent an industrial mineral placer mining claim, it must incorporate an economic deposit. Each ten acre parcel is evaluated for its mineral -in -character nature. Nonmineral -in -character parcels cannot be patented. Economic concerns include: claim locations, dummy locators, common variety nature, "excess reserves," and environmental constraints. Also, geologic and mineralogic studies, sampling and testing procedures are vital. Mining, milling, processing cost, and taxes must be evaluated. Product marketability analysis is necessary before starting any cash flow or discounted cash flow study. Valid data is essential to evaluate an economic industrial mineral deposit.

Each year more than 400 coal miners are injured (fatally and nonfatally) by rock falling from between or around roof supports. Many of these injuries can be prevented by the installation of roof screen. However, many coal mines are reluctant to use roof screen because of the added cost. The goal of this study was to determine the potential savings in workers' compensation (W C) premiums that can be achieved due to a reduction in rock fall injuries after roof screening. The WC rate-setting methods utilized by Illinois and Kentucky were investigated in this study. Using data obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration, national and state WC bodies and individual insurance companies (e.g., average cost per injury, loss cost rate, number of injuries per year, number of injuries preventable each year with roof screening), baseline mines (representing two mine sizes: 67 and 150 employees) were constructed with realistic ranges for estimates of injuries and WC premium costs. Using each state's actual WC rate-setting formulas, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine the total savings in WC costs after a three-year period. Annual savings in WC premiums ranged from $41,000 to $326,000 for the 67-person mine, and $96,000 to $843,000 for the 150-person mine. An economic analysis of the cost of a roof screening program at a 67-person mine was also conducted. The annual cost of a roof screening program here was estimated at $240,000. At this mine, the reduction in WC premiums alone could pay for the entire screening program.

The high lithium demand forecasted for some high tech applications and batteries for electric and hybrid-electric vehicles, in particular, has sparked increased exploration for lithium, particularly for lithium- and potassium-bearing brine deposits. The latter have generally followed the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) NI 43-101 guidelines on resource reporting, formulated for hard rock deposits (metals and industrial minerals). While a number of the requirements can be appropriately applied to brines, brines are fluids and require a specific analysis leading to a distinct set of reporting requirements. Brines cannot be considered industrial minerals because the various elements occur as ions in a dynamic fluid, rather than being chemically bonded in a solid. Although chemicals are produced from brines, brines have no relation to industrial mineral deposits. This article analyzes the recently released (Nov. 1, 2012) document CIM Best Practice Guidelines for Resource and Reserve Estimation for Lithium Brines, in light of the practical knowledge available from existing brine operations. It recommends modifications to the guidelines, which, if applied in their present format, will result in overstating resources and reserves and mislead potential investors. The CIM Best Practice Guidelines for Resource and Reserve Estimation for Lithium Brines document is generally descriptive and does not fully address the methodology for brine resource or reserve definition. Lithium and other elements (potassium, magnesium) are contained in a fluid, the hydrologic characterization of which should be the principal focus of a brine exploration program. The fundamental requirement in defining lithium brine resources and reserves in a salar is the identification and definition of those formations ? the aquifers ? that will yield brine in a usable quantity to a well, because brines can only be extracted by pumping wells. Fine-grained sediments will never, as required in the summary Table 1, have ?reasonable prospects of economic extraction,? cannot be considered and, therefore, need not be tested. However, the guidelines recommend the collection of solid samples and a high-core recovery for laboratory testing of various sediments instead of focusing on the brine.

A new approach has been developed that is capable of ascertaining the ore component that is responsible for the preg­robbing of pregnant pulps. Many gold mines are currently treating ores containing a component that is detrimental to the recovery of gold, in that they "preg-rob" the pregnant pulp by adsorption of some of the dissolved gold. The identity of the preg-robbing component in this type of ore has been the subject of considerable debate over a lengthy period, th various suggestions including amorphous carbon, chlonte, chalcopyrite and layered silicates, such as the phyllosilicate minerals pyrophyllite, kaolinite, phlogopite and illite. A means is now available to identify and characterize the preg-robber in gold ores. This new approach consists of contacting the ore with a synthetic aurocyanide solution, identifying the mineral grains by optical microscopy and analysing each grain individually using high-sensitivity electron microprobe analysis. The approach is exemplified in this initial study by identifying the preg-robbing component in an active sample of gold-bearing shale to be an amorphous carbonaceous phase consisting of discrete particles of about 5 µm diameter interspersed with shale particles and agglomerated into grains of up to 100 µm diameter. Microanalysis of these grains as well as other mineral particles revealed that the gold content of some of the carbonaceous grains was close to 7000 g,lt, with no gold being detected in any of the other mineral phases that were found to be present (e.g. quartz, chlorite, muscovite, pyrophyllite, etc). Bulk analysis of the sample for carbon and gold confirmed that gold loadings of around 7000 g,/t would be expected if all of the gold were adsorbed onto the carbonaceous component. The carbonaceous constituent is probably also responsible for the anomalously high surface area measured for the material. It probably acts in a similar fashion to activated carbon, and the correct choice of organic blinding agent will decrease the extent of preg-robbing by lowering the activity of the material for gold, without causing any downstream problems such as fouling of the activated carbon used for gold recovery
