Unfavourable climatic conditions in stopes are of significant economic and social importance due to the following reasons: - Working effect is much lower leading to decreased output and work productivity disregarding implementation of mechanization. - Manpower operating capability decreases much faster under unsatisfactory climatic conditions. Under normal climatic conditions a workman would expend much less effort in line with a shorter effective time for the achievement of identical production effects since the work would be more efficacious. The objective of study of problems and climatic conditions is to make the working environment in mines suitable for normal development of operations. Lowering of mining works to increasing depths and winning of a growing number of small orebodies over a broad area makes the problem of creating suitable climatic circumstances more complex. Mining costs are growing due to bench conditions in line with decreasing metal content in the ore, so frequently the investments required for creating favourable climatic conditions represent, in addition to the selection of mining technology, a very important parameter when making decisions regarding exploitation. As known, the basic factors affecting climatic operating conditions in mines-are: temperature, humidity and speed of air flow, implying that the climatic operating conditions are closely related to mine ventilation. Usually, the concept of unfavourable climatic operating conditions includes increased mine air temperature and humidity and low air flow velocity so that heat exchange between human organism and the working environment is impeded or reduced to minimum. Metal mines in Yugoslavia are characterized by the existence of a large number of active faces - stopes and horizons and lowering of mining operations to increasing depths, so that face ventilation solutions are more and more complex. Since its foundation (1961), our Institute is engaged in investigation of factors influencing climatic circumstances improvement of calculations for air distribution and distribution control in complex ventilation networks and study of problems related to ventilation of large volume and irregular configuration faces, as well as application of gained knowledge in our mines. The paper presents the knowledge and experience gained in the case of Lead and Zinc Mine "Trepca" - Stari Trg.

The higher stress zone adjacent to an underground opening causes a velocity anomaly that can be mapped in favorable conditions with an acoustic cross-borehole logging system. Bureau personnel used a specialized system at the Colorado School of Mines test site near Idaho Springs, Colorado, to locate the Edgar Mine tunnel and its associated stress anomaly. Data from the logging system' were processed with a tomographic image reconstruction algorithm to map the opening and the location of the high velocity zone around the opening. The velocity imagery from tomographic analysis compared favorably with predictions from numerical modelling of the location of the stress anomaly.

On behalf of the Ontario Water Resources Commission, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to your Institute for presenting us with this opportunity to outline the regulatory control programme as it relates to the mining industry in the Province of Ontario. In Canada, and particularly in Ontario, we are blessed with an abundance of natural resources. Fresh water in the form of lakes and rivers covers nearly 17 per cent of the area of the Province. (Total area of the Province of Ontario is 412,582 square miles.) The mining industry, which had its beginning in the early 1800's with a small iron ore plant, has progressed with the major discoveries of nickel and copper in 1883, silver in 1903, gold in 1908, iron in 1939 and uranium in 1953, to the point where, in 1966, almost one billion dollars in mineral wealth was mined in Ontario. Water, in spite of its great abundance and with due respects that it may become a natural resource worthy of export in the foreseeable future, has become increasingly precious in Ontario, particularly in the more urban areas in the southern part of the Province.

Thin seam mining presents unique challenges when management or economic conditions require significant productivity increases. These challenges are increased depending upon the presence of various external factors such as labor unions, Federal and state regulations, and market characteristics. This paper explores the turn-around situation occurring at Tanoma Mining Company (TMC), a medium-sized underground coal mining company in central Pennsylvania, USA. Using a systematic approach of improving management controls and direction, labor relations, and communications, coupled with an intensive upgrade/rebuild/replacement program for equipment and systems used at the mine, TMC has begun reversing its' cashflow position from negative to positive within two years.

The growing need for development of thinner, more erratic, or less easily- mined coals in the Appalachian region requires more detailed analysis of conditions and factors controlling or influencing deposition of these seams. The value of depositional modelling in evaluation of such coals has been demonstrated in many recent studies and publications. Such modelling may be applied to allow prediction of factors varying from regional coal occurrence trends to very local areas of seam discontinuities, but requires thorough utilization of all available types of data. Mapping of general depositional energies, as derived from basic geophysical and driller's logs, can be applied to specific prediction of coal occurrence, and projection of particular facies as representative of unique depositional features or conditions often proves more applicable to coal character delineation than does mapping of the coal itself. Depositional modelling and trend projection may also serve as a guideline in reserve classification and confidence-levels in reserve estimations.

A laboratory investigation was carried out to study the influence of asphalt, bentonite and corn starch binders on the pelletization kinetics of coal fines and on the quality of the resulting pellets. Pellet quality was evaluated in terns of the compression strength, impact resistance (drop test), abrasion resistance and resistance to severe weather conditions. The amount of binder addition did not significantly influence the pellet growth kinetics. However, the pellet quality varied markedly depending upon the type and the amount of binder used. Experimental results are explained on the basis of the mechanism of interaction between the coal particles and the binders. Of the three binders tested, corn starch proved to be the best in all respects but for the resistance to water penetration. Finally, a combination of corn starch (imparting strength) and asphalt emulsion (imparting resistance to water penetration) was found to yield the best quality coal pellets.

In spite of their increasing importance, few universities exhibit great depth with respect to industrial minerals courses due to the shortage of specialized faculty in a category this broad. As new ideas are formulated and technological advances are developed in the field of industrial minerals, the classroom still exists as a student's primary source of information. This opportunity to give today's students the benefit of modern developements has not been utilized to its utmost potential.

Much progress has been made in the application of geostatistics to hard rock ore deposits.1,2,3 4,8 Progress in the application of geostatistics to coal deposits has developed over a period of time out of hard rock technology.5,7 Exploratory drilling in many hard rock deposits is frequently significantly more productive than exploratory drilling in coal deposits. For example, hundreds of feet of drilling and/or many drill setups are frequently necessary to obtain a few samples from a typical 4 to 6 foot thick coal seam. With hard rock deposits, which are frequently thick or volumetric, less drilling dead work is involved in sampling the deposit. To produce a variogram, which is the basic element needed for geostatistical analysis, a few well positioned holes drilled into a hard rock deposit where the core(s) can be divided into many sections can produce a detailed variogram. To produce a similar type variogram in coal, it is necessary to drill many dozens of holes with much of the core length consisting of overburden data which is frequently of only secondary importance. To apply geostatistics to coal, not only are many separate sample sites needed, but frequently a problem exists in that the interval distance between samples cannot be controlled with the ease that hard rock drilling intervals can be controlled where it is only necessary to cut core segments according to some preassigned interval of distance. Because the uses of existing coal deposit samples are frequently handicapped by irregular sample distances and lack of sampling density along certain directions needed for the development of variograms, the application of geostatistics to coal deposits frequently does not proceed with the same efficiency and rapidity as when these techniques are applied to ore deposits. Grid-fitting was developed by the writers, as a logical and evolutionary improvement over the long and successful application of geostatistics to coal seams.6,9 Grid-fitting combines the trending of variance as well as other aspects of probability theory to optimize informational yields from the commonly less productive data derived from coal exploratory programs. Grid-fitting is basically a technique where a hypothesis involving numerous grid patterns, where each pattern is of a given geometry, size and direction is repeatedly matched against actual sample data to determine which match results in the closest fit of the hypothesis to the data. To determine the closest fit, a special index known as a selectivity index was developed. The selectivity index is basically the product of the mean and variance of the variances contained within each of the grids. hence, if SI is the selectivity index then [SI = Xs E (S i - Xs) /N] where [X]s is the mean of individual grid variances Si2 for any pattern of given geometry, direction and size.

This transformation is reflected in new levels of production, consumption and trade, in shits in the location and size of markets, in the tapping of far distant sources of iron ore, and in the emergence of new export centres catering on an increasing scale to ore deficient, importing countries. Within the broad framework of shifting supply/demand relationships, certain operationally meaningful adjustments can be singled out for special mention: 1. The iron and steel industry has undergone vigorous and aggressive expansion, during the post-war period, not only in the capitalist world and among the socialist bloc, but in backward regions as well. New countries have been added to the list of steel producers, while new facilities have been relocated by established steel makers. 2. Overall demand for iron ore has risen rapidly, arid has flowed different channels.

Henderson Mine has been transporting molybdenum ore using a rail haulage system for the past 21 years. Due to the age of this system, limited performance, and obsolescence, a capital investment decision was imminent. Henderson used this opportunity to evaluate other transportation methods and continuously improve their mining practices. These efforts resulted in a new mine plan for Henderson, which ensures that Henderson will continue to supply high quality molybdenum into the 21st century. This paper will discuss the dramatic changes taking place at the Henderson Mine as a new production level is mined. These changes include the installation of an underground crushing, conveying, and truck haulage system, as well as increasing the scale of the panel caving process. Each of these topics will be discussed, as will their rock mechanics and material flow implications.

The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel Project in Toronto extends approximately 10.5 km from Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant west under Lake Shore Boulevard, north under Bayview Avenue and east through the Don River park area to the Coxwell Ravine Park. This project includes the installation of five intake shafts connected by 10.5 km of 6.3 m internal diameter tunnel and eleven drop shafts and vent shafts, connected to the tunnel by a series of adits. During the excavation of one of five intake shafts (20 m in diameter and 52 m deep), significant volumes of free phase oil and hydrocarbons were encountered. Due to the heavy inflows of the contaminants, excavation was stopped at the transition depth. The initial support of excavation needed to be redesigned, shaft had to be backfilled with CDF and installation of deeper secant piles are in progress to cut off contaminants. This paper outlines the initial plan for excavation as well as the design changes to the plan. The current status of the shaft excavation and lessons learned will be discussed.

New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland dominate Australian black coal production and exports. NSW produced 86 Mt (95 million st) of saleable coal in 1994, a doubling of output since 1980. Asian demand for thermal and coking coal has driven this growth. This high Asian demand is expected to continue and NSW will seek to secure its share. History The history of the New South Wales (NSW) coal industry can be traced to 1797 when coal was first taken from Newcastle to Sydney (Ellis, 1969). At that time, NSW was a British colony, independent from the other colonies, such as Victoria and Queensland. Australia, as a federation of colonies, did not exist until 1901. The Newcastle coal industry grew through the 1800s in line with the growth of the colonies. Several events spurred demand for Newcastle coal. These included: ? The NSW and Victorian gold rushes of the 1850s and associated population growth. ? The development of steamship traffic at the expense of sail. ? The development of railways and town gas supplies. By 1900, Australia was producing 6.4 Mt (7 million st) of coal, most of it from NSW. By then, NSW had established strong export markets in Indonesia, China, Japan and New Zealand. The history of energy consumption is marked by continual competition, changing intensity of use and substitution. From 1900 to 1940, the Queensland, Victorian and Indonesian coal industries developed at the expense of NSW exports. Similarly, New Zealand developed its hydroelectric industry and thus declined as the largest customer for NSW coal. Oil replaced steam in the shipping and railway markets and electricity replaced gas for lighting. Industrial efficiencies also affected coal. Between 1928 and 1938, coal consumed in generating power fell from by 17% on a kilowatt hour basis and, during the same period, the amount of gas produced per ton of coal rose by 18% (Shaw and Bruno). Faced with these pressures, production and exports stagnated. By 1941, Australian black coal production was 14.2 Mt (15.6 million st). NSW's production was 11.7 Mt (12 million st), up only 19% from 1912. Exports had virtually ceased (Fig. 1). In such circumstances, the industry had lost focus. Introduction With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive, but it leads to greater losses in slimes. Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25 to 50 µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Ore from the South Crofty mine near Redruth, Cornwall, was subjected to thermal pretreatment in the hope that differential thermal expansion of the minerals would lead to intergranular cracking, and thus enhanced liberation. South Crofty ore contains about 1% tin as cassiterite associated with a complex assemblage of quartz, chlorite, tourmaline, and hema¬tite in granite and slate. Recovery of cassiterite can be as low as 70%, as overgrinding occurs during stage reduction of the material to 1 mm (primary grinding) and 180 µm (regrinding). Cassiterite is present in grain sizes ranging from submicroscopic to + 10 mm, the bulk being predominantly in the range of 50 µm to 3 mm. Experimental Flat polished sections of the ore were photographed in reflected light using a Vickers M17 microscope. The sections were then heated in a Carbolite LMF4 muffle furnace. The heating rate and temperature were monitored by a thermocouple immersed in the bed of particles. Previous work by Sherring (1981) on the same material showed that a 55% reduction in grinding resistance occurred when the material was rapidly heated and cooled through the quartz inversion tem¬perature (573°C), where a volumetric expansion of 0.86% occurs. The samples were therefore heated to 650°C at 26°/min, and were then water-quenched to room temperature. The effect of heat treatment on the mineralogy and fracture network was assessed by examining the same area after treatment. Results Most of the sections examined showed that extensive transgranular cracking occurred as a result of heat treatment. Such cracking, although weakening the rock and hence reducing the work index, would in no way enhance the liberation of the cassiterite from the host minerals. Intergranular cracking, which would lead to enhanced liberation, was difficult to discern under reflected light, but there was evidence of such cracking in some of the sections examined. Figures 1 and 2 are examples of typical sections before and after heat treatment. Figures la and lb - show cassiterite in hematite, Fig. lb, in normal incident illumination, illustrating clearly that after heat treatment, transgranular fracture is evident in the cassiterite. If any intergranular cracking has occurred, it is not evident in this photograph. Figures 2a and 2b show cassiterite in quartz before and after treatment. Fracturing in both minerals after treatment can clearly be seen, and there is evidence of intergranular fracturing. However, protruding "arms" of cassiterite are severed by transgranular fracture. Subgrains of quartz have also been isolated by trans¬granular fracture. There is major transgranular cracking across the wider sections of cassiterite. Discussion The effect of rapidly heating South Crofty tin ore to 650°C, followed by water-quenching to room temperature, has been studied by observing the fracture networks in mineral grains. The choice of 650°C as the heating temperature was influenced by the work of Sherring (1981), who found considerable reduction in grinding resistance after thermal pretreatment of the same ore. Scheding et al. (1981), however, have shown, by means of a crude calculation, that heat treatment cannot be justified solely on the basis of reduced grinding costs. The cost of heat treatment far out-weighs that of grinding, resulting in the combined costs for heat treatment being over six times that for grinding unheated material. The most economically attractive aspect of heat treatment is the possibility of enhanced liberation of the valuable mineral due to increased intergranular rather than transgranular fracture. Grinding costs would be greatly reduced by improved liberation at coarser sizes, and the costs of ancillary processes, such as dewatering and tailings disposal, would be reduced. The most significant economic effect, however, would be in improved metallurgical efficiency. Improved liberation would increase concentrate grades, and recoveries would be higher, particularly in the case of ores where high slime losses are produced due to the excessively fine grinding required to produce adequate liberation. Manser (1983) has shown that only a 1% increase in tin recovery, at the same concentrate grade, would be sufficient to offset heat treatment costs on South Crofty ore. Heavy liquid analysis and shaking table separation have been used to evaluate the effect of thermal treatment on processing (Binns, 1984; Scheding, 1981; Sherring, 1981). However, treatment of unheated and heated samples of South Crofty ore, ground to the same product size, by such methods have shown little evidence of improved metallurgical efficiency after thermal pretreatment. The large amount of transgranular fracturing revealed by reflected light studies helps to explain this lack of improvement. Clay mineralogic studies of ore versus barren rocks in the Grants mineral belt show that some combination of chlorite (rosette form), illite, mixed layer illite-montmorillonite, (- Mg-montmorillonite) are penecontemporaneous with uranium minerals in trend ore; these same clay minerals plus kaolinite are related to the roll type ore near the main redox front of the Grants mineral belt. Clay minerals from barren rocks are characterized by a greater abundance of Na-montmorillonite, kaolinite, and face-to-edge form chlorite. Chlorites from ore zones contain much more vanadium than do chlorites from barren rocks. Trend ore probably formed from southeasterly flowing waters following paleochannels in the Late Jurassic. These deposits are found almost entirely in reduced rocks, and organic carbon may have been an important reductant to remove U-V-Se-Mo from solution as carbonate from ore zones contains some organic carbon based on stable iso¬tope studies. Uplift, remobilization and reprecipitation of some of the trend ore resulted in the formation of redistributed ore, some of which possesses a roll type geometry. Mineralization for the roll type ore was apparently controlled by sulfide-sulfate equilibria at or near the main redox front in the Grants mineral belt. Trend and roll type ore possess different assemblages of clay minerals and different trace element abundances. Laramide faults cut both trend and some roll type ore. Stack ore is found in Laramide fault zones. Limited oxygen isotopic data from clay minerals in two mines at Ambrosia Lake in reduced rocks indicate probable preservation of ancient, formational waters and no evidence for infiltration by young meteoric waters. This information, plus the pre-Laramide faults, suggest, but do not unequivocally prove, that the main redox front has been relatively stable since its formation, probably some time in the Cretaceous. Younger encroachment of the redox front in post-Laramide is proposed by others, however, and the problem is unresolved. Uranium for the deposits was most likely carried in solution as an oxyion, probably as (UO2(CO3)2.2H2O)2- or (UO2(HPO4)2)2-, although organic transport cannot be entirely ruled out. Oxyions of vanadium, selenium, molybdenum and possibly arsenic and antimony, are interpreted from Eh-pH diagrams to have been segregated and transported with U6+ soluble species and precipitated when a chemically reducing environment was reached. The rare earth elements are also enriched in ore zones, but it is not clear if they were transported with the U-V-Se-Mo-(As)-(Sb) suite or derived from a more local source.

Through the remainder of this century, world consumption of fluorine per ton of primary aluminum produced will continue to be substantially reduced. Growth of the primary industry will offset some of the unit consumption, but demand for new fluorine sources will decline sharply. Continued application of dry fume scrubbing systems will be the most significant factor in reducing demand.

An arsenal of isotopic techniques is avail-able that can date the full range of hydrothermal ore deposits. The following are prerequisites for ideal results: (1) Careful collection of samples that are related to the event in a field and process context; (2) Optical examination of the component selected for dating to be sure that it has not been altered; (3) Careful preparation of a pure component of the sample selected for dating; (4) Precise and accurate measurement; (5) Knowledgeable interpretation of the data with reference to decay systematics, properties of the component analyzed as well as the field context and thermochemical environment of the ore process.

General. Data for the operating information given in the 15 tables in this chapter was obtained from voluminous questionnaires sent to over 100 operating companies in 1972. There has been a considera¬ble change since then in supply and power costs and many companies have had expansions or revisions since that time, so it must be realized that information is valid for the year 1972. This is true except for the three new properties of Sacaton, Metcalf, and Pinto Valley. These three operations started up since 1972 and all information for them was obtained in 1975. The questionnaires were sent to all major copper properties throughout the world as well as to many smaller units and to some mines that had complex or unusual conditions. Properties for which no information is given did not submit completed questionnaires. Several operations were unable to supply information requested be¬cause of company policy prohibiting it. However, data is presented for 75 different operating properties. The reference number of the left-hand column is the same for all 15 tables of data. If the company had several operating properties as of 1972, then subsequent properties use the same number but a different letter. For example, Anaconda's property at Butte, Mont., is IA, whereas Anaconda's (now Anamax) Twin Buttes property in Arizona is IB. Table I gives general data for the properties including exact loca¬tion, milling rate, pertinent assay values and recoveries, and a brief listing of ore and gangue minerals. It was not possible to obtain any more information from the properties in Chile except that given in Table I. Crushing. Crushing plant operating data is given in Table 2. This table gives data on the crushers, feeders, and screens used at each property. The data obtained on feeders was confusing, but, rather than completely eliminate this information, it was decided to report it as given. The confusion lies only in the description of where the feeder is located. Where a primary feeder is listed it was not possible to determine if this feeder was on primary feed or primary discharge. For secondary feeders it is known that the feeder listed usually is feeding the secondary crushers, but at some properties it is handling the secondary crusher discharge. The same reasoning holds true for tertiary feeders-they handle either tertiary feed or discharge. This table contains a voluminous amount of data. A column giving tons per day per square foot of screen area would have been very informative, but some properties included circulating load in the feed rate and others listed new feed only, so calculations were meaningless. Autogenous Mills. The use of autogenous or semiautogenous mills for any property must be given serious consideration in the future. Table 3 lists data for four properties that are fully autogenous and four more semiautogenous mills that use balls to supplement the chunks of ore. This method of grinding is especially applicable when the ore is of such a nature that crushing problems would be severe, such as when ore is wet or sticky or contains a lot of fines. Paradoxically, it should also be considered when ore is tough and hard and blocky because then the competency of the ore means it can serve well as the grinding media. Where the ore varies greatly in hardness, as at Cyprus Pima and Lornex, semiautogenous grinding has been especially beneficial with capital costs and operating costs both 10-20% lower than could be obtained with conventional crushing and grinding. Rod Mills. For a great many years the standard milling operation used two- or three-stage crushing followed by open circuit rod mills and then ball mills in closed circuit with classifiers of some kind. A surprising number of properties crush to the fine size of about 3/8 in. and then use ball mills only, in closed circuit, with no rod mills. It is difficult to say whether rod mill-ball mill circuits or ball mill only is the best. One can be certain of two things: (1) the argument will go on for a long time and (2) for some mills one method obviously was superior over the other. As ball mills of 14, 15 ft, and larger came into use, more properties like Duval Sierrita (16b ft diam by 19 ft long) and Bougainville (18 x 21 ft) were built with single-stage ball mill grinding. Although there are larger rod mills used, especially in the iron ore industry, the largest rod mills on copper ore are at Twin Buttes (14 x 18.5 ft) and at Gibraltar (13'A x 20 ft).
