Introduction A longwall mining demonstration currently in progress in the Herrin (No.6) Coal Member near Benton, Illinois, involves the extraction of three adjacent panels by the longwall method. The first panel was completed in May, 1977. The Illinois State Geological Survey is involved in this project for two reasons: (1) to detail the geology of the roof and relate the geologic features to the behavior of the roof during mining operations, and (2) to study the nature and occurrence of coal balls (carbonate petrifactions of peat) encountered during this demonstration. General Geology of Area The stratigraphic sequence of beds immediately above the No. 6 Coal in this area, ranging from oldest to youngest, is: gray shale (Energy Shale Member), black carbonaceous shale (Anna Shale Member), and argillaceous limestone (Brereton Limestone Member) (figure 1). In some areas of the mine, where one of these units may rest directly on the coal, one or more of the members is absent from the stratigraphic sequence. The nature of roof for the area is shown in figure 2. It is greatly exaggerated in the vertical direction. The Walshville Channel, 11.3 km west of this mine, was a river at least in part deposited at the same time as the coal. The gray shale wedge on top of the coal, which thins away from the channel, is thought to represent an overbank deposit of mud from the channel. The next layer deposited on top of the gray shale, and on the coal not covered by gray shale, is the black carbonaceous shale, believed to represent a mud deposited in a brackish environment. The discovery of the Delbridge massive sulphide deposit in the Noranda district of Quebec resulted from an appreciation of the significance of a mercury leakage halo as a litho-chemical pathfinder to blind ore, coupled to its location relative to a geologically inferred ore-bearing horizon within complex volcanic stratigraphy. Systematic sampling of micro-fractures present in outcrops delineated a diagnostic anomaly, drawing attention to an area considered prospective for buried ore. The massive sulphide deposit was subsequently found to be blind and topped at the 110 metre level.

The two types of dryers used in the drying of copper concentrates are the rotary dryer and the spray dryer. The rotary dryer has until recent history been the traditional drying method used, Although spray dryers have been used in the chemical field for many years it is only recently that they have been accepted for drying of copper concentrates. The comparison made here will apply in a narrower sense to the drying of copper concentrates as fed into the reverbatory furnaces of the Smelter. To compare a rotary dryer and a spray dryer, which are two totally different methods and pieces of equipment, it is best to view them as systems each made up of certain elements

The performance of the versatile McNally Wedag horizontal vibratory centrifuge for dewatering ultra fine 0.5 x 0.15 mm (28 x 100 mesh) material has proven to be success¬ful and the results presented herein will examine its capabilities in terms of capacity, solids capture, product moisture, effluent solids, and size analysis. Centrifugal dewatering of fine refuse has proven t to be another application for which this unit has performed exceptionally well.

The Ship Canal Water Quality Project includes a 2.7-mile, 18-ft and 10-in internal-diameter tunnel that extends from Ballard to Wallingford, two popular neighborhoods in the West of Seattle. During the TBM Main drive a 12' × 12' boulder with variable strength up to 47,000psi was encountered resulting on signicant damages to the Cutter ead. The rst part of this paper describes the design and construction of an underground recess in front of the TBM to create a safe working environment for the TBM repairs. The second part describes an injection campaign performed to seal an unforeseen water inow appeared during the excavation of the 11 Avenue Diversion Structure.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) uses light-scattering real-time dust monitors (nephelometers) in its research to develop dust controls to reduce respirable silica dust overexposures in miners. Recently, the model 1500-pDR, an active nephelometer (i.e., with cyclone and pump configuration), was introduced by Thermo Scientific. Testing was completed to ensure compatibility with the metal/nonmetal mine dust personal sampling unit (M/NMDPSU). Results of testing demonstrated that gravimetric concentrations measured from the 1500-pDR are comparable to the gravimetric concentrations measured using the M/NMDPSU, without need for correction, under commonly observed dust loading conditions.

No other region of the world is enjoying the tremendous growth of power use that is currently being experienced in Asia. Fortunately for those of us in the coal industry -particularly in Asia -the preponderance of the power plants being planned or under construction designed to use coal as the power plant fuel. This has produced a significant increase in the demand for steam coal, which has in turn encouraged many of us in the industry to develop new coal mines. One country that has enjoyed very substantial growth in coal production is Indonesia. This developing country of 195,000,000 people who live on the nearly 13,000 islands of Indonesia have emerged very quickly to become the third largest exporter of steam coal, following only Australia and South Africa. Almost all coal in Indonesia is mined by surface mining methods. This paper will examine the surface mining of coal in Indonesia, as it continues to be an important part of the supply equation for coal in Asia.

This investigation addressed the possibility of producing pellet feed at a silica content of = 1.0% using a representative sample of Samarco´s mechanical flotation tailings. This sample contained 11.0% Fe and presented an F80 = 116 µm and a d50 = 63 µm. The higher silica content was verified in the coarser fractions and the higher iron content in the fraction -37 µm. Specular hematite is the most abundant mineralogical phase in the fraction -37 µm. The technological tests used one of four methods: magnetic concentration using a wet high-intensity magnetic separator, magnetic concentration using a SLon high-gradient magnetic separator, reverse flotation or direct flotation. The methods using the magnetic concentrator SLon, reverse flotation and direct flotation did not present results meeting the target of the study: iron content in the concentrate (rougher stage) greater than 34% or iron recovery greater than 80%. Cleaner stages were not achievable with the resulting concentrates. In contrast, the most successful method consisted of using wet high-intensity magnetic separators (WHIMS) as a rougher stage and reverse flotation as a cleaner stage. Using this route, it was possible to produce a pellet feed with a silica grade of 1.0% and high specular hematite content.

Copper smelter flue dusts containing arsenic are hazardous materials requiring environmentally accept-able disposal, preferably with re-source recovery under the RCRA and CRCLA regulations. However, the known resource recovery processes entail capital and operating costs greater than can be justified by the revenue of the recovered metal. Consequently, the smelting industry is tending to forego resource recovery in favor of encapsulation and storage in a certified class I hazardous waste site, or in a dedicated facility located at the source Superfund site. Order of magnitude costs for this option with portland cement encapsulation are estimated at $100 per ton, not including transportation. Industrial adoption of a new resource recovery process re-quires that its cost, including capital amortization, exceed the cost of encapsulation and storage only by the amount of the offsetting revenue from sale of metal. The lime-roast/ammoniacal leaching process is expected to meet this goal.

This paper provides an overview of the Design Build Project features and highlight some of the important design considerations, features, and innovations, including geologic conditions and related TBM design, and deep shaft and tunnel segment designs. The paper provides the most recent updates on some of the project construction activities including TBM tunnel progress and retrieval schemes, tunnel pump station and deep vertical shaft liner installations, SEM construction, and microtunneling for the longest adit using Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar pipes.

The Middle Mississippi River extends from the mouth of the Ohio River to the mouth of the Missouri River, a distance of about 310 kilometers (km) measured along the river. From its founding in 1764 to the first steamboat arrival in 1817, the City of St. Louis was little more than a trading post. However, with the advent of the shallow-draft steamboat, the Middle Mississippi River rapidly became a major thoroughfare of commerce. In this regard, its importance has been reflected by the development of port facilities at St. Louis and by Federal activity relating to channel maintenance and improvement. First Federal work on the Middle Mississippi River was autho¬rized by Congress in 1824. This work was for snag removal and bank clearing and was directed at reducing the hazards to steamboat traffic, particularly during low-flow periods. During the 1820's and early 1830's, the main channel threatened to move toward the Illinois shore and abandon the St. Louis port facilities. In 1836 and 1837, Congress authorized construction of permanent improvements to keep-the river next to St. Louis (Missouri shore). Surface mining of coal in the South developed into a major industry during the 1960's. The economic significance of the industry is much greater than is readily apparent when one considers only the value of the coal mined. The abun-dant supply of relatively inexpensive steam coal for electric power generation that has been derived from the surface mines has provided the foundation for the industrial expansion that has occurred throughout the South. The region, in gen-eral, has enjoyed the benefits of plentiful low cost electric power. However, re-cent political decisions, at all levels of government, threaten to destroy or severely curtail the surface mining of coal and eliminate the economic advantages once enjoyed by the region. These political decisions are rapidly changing the basic rules of operation and fundamental economics of surface coal mining. Recent changes, resulting from the enactment of environmental and health and safety laws and various bureaucratic rules and regulations, have had a three-fold effect: 1) Greatly increased operating cost, 2) increased lead times for mine development, 3) limited potential reserve base for future mining. Also current legislative proposals are casting a shadow of uncertainty over the future of all coal mining operations that has created serious delays and in-creased cost for the expansion of the coal industry necessary to meet our project independence goals. Extensive exploration is being undertaken throughout the world in search for heavy minerals, particularly rutile and other titanium minerals. The federal government is sponsoring research involving rutile ores and recovery of stockpile-grade concentrates from domestic sources. Producers are being forced to turn to deposits with a heavy mineral content as low as 0.50% (essentially rutile and zircon). The North Carolina State University Minerals Research Laboratory investigated the possibilities of recovering heavy minerals from the amine tailings of the Texasgulf Inc.'s phosphate plant at Aurora, North Carolina. One laboratory beneficiation procedure using gravity, electrostatic and magnetic processes, resulted in the recovery of 78.7% of the heavy minerals in the amine tailings. Based on this percentage recovery and the present rate of phosphate mining, approximately 13,000 tons per year of heavy minerals (principally ilmenite and zircon) with a potential value of approximately $1,045,000 (1977) could be recovered. The economic potential for recovery of these heavy minerals appears to be favorable. A flotation procedure for up-grading the heavy minerals content in the amine tailings has been developed at the Laboratory, which could allow for concentration of heavy minerals and storing them in tailings area other than main tailings for future processing.

The flocculation and dispersion behaviors of microsize wolframite and quartz are systematically studied in this paper. For synthetic mixtures, the floc separatory method on gravity units--electromagnetic vibration table (EVT) and lifting column (LC), have been approached. Satisfactory results can be obtained with a weak shearing. A better metallurgical performance can also be achieved for natural ore slimes through the combined technique. The efficiency is better than that of single gravity separation. Finally, the mechanism has been investigated.

SAG mill throughput is often a bottleneck in increasing metal productivity. Improved size distribution control in the mill feed can be used to increase mill production. This can be accomplished by controlling blast fragmentation as a function of energy input and rock characteristics. Such an approach requires the integration of rock fragmentation and comminution modeling. The optimal mill feed size distribution is determined by adapting a population balance comminution model to a measure of rock hardness or fragility which is also relevant to the rock fragmentation that is achieved by blasting. The relation between the size distribution and fragility of the feed and of the mill's product and the critical size in a SAG mill is examined.

Since the turn of the century there has been a marked increase in population, industrial and economic growth, and in energy requirements in the United States. During this time our energy needs have been met largely by natural gas and petroleum, but as our reserves of these materials are depleted, we are going to depend more and more on our large reserves of coal. The mining of coal for electrical power production has increased at a rapid rate during the past decade. Over half the coal produced in the United States in 1971 came from mines utilizing surface mining operations (Paone, et al, 1974). Surface mining is expected to increase as the rising cost of oil places more demand on coal for energy. About 57 percent of the coal reserves in the United States lie in the area west of the 100th meridian. About one-quarter of this can be mined by current surface methods. This would involve the disturbance of approximately 1.5 million acres (600,000 hectares). By the year 2000, projections indicate disturbance of about 200,000 acres, or 300 square miles, in the West. Mined areas receiving more than 250 mm of annual precipitation can usually be revegetated without irrigation if the spoils are properly shaped, the surface layer consists of suitable plant growth media, and proven techniques in rehabilitating disturbed rangeland are applied. Areas receiving less than 250 mm of annual rainfall or with high evapotranspiration rates pose a more difficult problem. Revegetation of these areas can probably be accomplished only with major inputs of water and good management (National Academy of Science, 1974).

Liquid carbon dioxide can be used as a replacement for organic solvents in the extraction of anionic PGM complexes from an aqueous phase. This can be achieved only if highly carbon dioxide-soluble chelating agents are developed because conventional chelating agent-metal complexes, such as trioctylamine-gold chloride, are not soluble in liquid carbon dioxide (although trioctylamine is CO,-soluble). Our novel CO,-soluble chelating agents have a fluorinated tail and a conventional amine head group. Both the chelating agent and the chelating agent-metal complex are soluble at ambient temperature at pressures between 7-35 MPa. Equilibrium constants in the 105 range have been measured (in Freon 113, a low pressure screening liquid for carbon dioxide), indicating that these compounds will strongly bind the metal chloride. For example, 93% of Pt-chloride was extracted into Freon 113 using a 3.5:1I ratio of a double-tailed fluoroalkyl amine chelating:metal chloride. 88% recovery of Pt-chloride into liquid carbon dioxide was achieved using the same chelating agent at a 3.5:1 ratio.

"INTRODUCTIONDouble Shield TBMs were introduced in the market in the early seventies with three main targets:• Increase the TBM performances in term of advance per day thanks to the ability to erect a segmental lining simultaneously with the excavation phase.• Be able to advance through unstable and disturbed rocks under the protection of the shields• Provide a finished tunnel by installing a precast lining as the TBM advance.In 2003 SELI developed the design of the Double Shield Universal (DSU) TBM as an evolution of the original Double Shield TBM design.This new TBM design was targeted to improve: the TBM capability to advance through squeezing/converging rock formations under high cover, the telescopic joint design (allowing by such to operate the machine in double shield mode in very weak rock), the capability of the TBM to investigate and treat the ground around and ahead of the tunnel face.In the same lapse of time Single Shield TBMs, originally utilized for soft ground tunnelling, extended progressively their range of application to mix rocks and finally to hard rock tunnelling with increasing performances.This also thanks to the substantial reduction in the installation time of the segmental lining ring that contributed to minimize the TBM stand by time between two consecutive boring strokes.Today the choice between the two types of TBMs needs to be carefully evaluated project by project since one type of TBM may “prevail” in certain geologies and diameters and vice versa.THE VISHNUGAD PIPALKOTI TUNNELThe Vishnugad Pipalkoti Tunnel is part of the 444 MW Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project (VPHEP) on Alaknanda river in Uttarakhand (India).The Owner is the Indian electric company “Tehry Hydro Development Corporation” (THDC) and the World Bank finances the project.The Headrace Tunnel total length is 13.4 Km and a section of about 12,3km will be excavated by TBM by SELI Overseas (Italy) in subcontract to HCC (India) the General Contractor for the project. The TBM will be delivered ex workshop in March 2016 and it is foreseen to start boring in the second half of 2016.Figure 1 below shows the location of the project and the following Table 1 summarizes the geometrical characteristics of the TBM tunnel."
