This paper addresses the effects of using jet fans as booster fans in mine ventilation networks. A method was developed to determine the pressure generated by jet fans using the momentum theory. The influence of a reduction cone and other ventilation parameters on the jet fan pressure was analyzed. Verification experiments conducted in the Waldo Mine are described. Examples are given to demonstrate the conditions for the effective use of jet fans.

Improvements in cost efficiency, noise control, environmental design and ergonomics ? the mining and construction industries are facing demands on many fronts. The international manufacturers of construction machinery are responding to these challenges, and they will be presenting their innovations in all these fields at bauma 2013. bauma, the international trade fair for mining and construction machinery, mining vehicles, and building material machines, takes place from April 15 to 21, 2013 at the Messe Munchen exhibition center in Munich, Germany. The last bauma, in 2010, attracted 3,256 exhibitors from 53 countries, and more than 420,000 visitors from more than 200 nations. Covering a total of 555,000 m2 (5.97 million sq ft) of exhibition space, bauma is one of the largest trade shows in the world. This year?s fair is expected to surpass the 2010 figures. Here are some examples of the new developments visitors can expect to see at the show.

The iron ores mined by LKAB in the north of Sweden have excellent beneficiation properties. This gives LKAB a favourable position as regards the production of low silica pellets for direct reduction. LKAB have concentrated on developing and marketing grades of pellets for the Midrex-Purofer-HyL process group, i.e. such D.R. processes which are carried out in a shaft furnace or a static bed using reformed natural gas as a reducing agent. The paper deals with properties and quality demands of iron ore pellets for such processes. Matters such as the effect of the residual magnetite in the fired pellets on the degree of metallization, the amount and composition of the slag phase in the pellets, the mechanism of the disintegration during reduction, the state of swelling of the pellets during the conditions prevailing in these processes, the importance of the porosity, the improvement of the reducibility and lowering of the sticking tendency of the pellets by small additions of suitable additives and the influence of the pellet size are discussed. A special test procedure for D.R. pellets has been elaborated by LKAB. Thus, three metallurgical properties are routinely determined separately, namely reducibility, reduction strength and sticking. The test methods are described. Finally the present and future LKAB pellets for direct reduction are presented with respect to chemical analyses and metallurgical properties.

Application of an SEM-based methodology suggests a reason for past contradictory results on the relationship between quartz and coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). Results indicate that coal seams with the same bulk analysis of quartz have different amounts of surface-available quartz. Our research shows that the amounts of pure and surface-available quartz in a respirable dust vary directly with the rank of a coal seam, except in the case where rock materials are mined. The estimated amount of surface- available quartz therefore provides a measure of the quartz-related fibrogenic potential of a respirable dust.

The mining industry has recently been. - experiencing a difficult period. Escalating costs, lower grades and deeper level mining, are a few of .the reasons' why interactive graphics or CADD (computer aided design and draughting) systems are increasingly being used. CADD systems which support powerful and flexible mining applications have great potential for making all forms of mining more efficient and effective. There are many application programs which address almost every aspect of mining. Most of these programs originated to satisfy a particular need. Graphics and other features were added until they, reached a point where they were commercially viable as a mining package. Because of their evolution these packages, lack many CADD-type features. Today there are powerful personal computers (PC's) and engineering workstations running the best CADD systems available. These systems, support hundreds of applications in almost every discipline. Mining was until recently not well supported by interactive graphics vendors because of the highly variable nature of mining and the lack of common standards. Users of CADD systems have experienced the benefits of CADD and come to expect similar features from graphic mining packages. Several developers of mining packagers have either attempted to include some CADD features or make their packages compatible with one or other CADD system. Mining can benefit greatly From a combination of interactive graphics (or CADD) and the right mining application software.

Most Newfoundland. mineral deposits can be clearly classified as within rocks formed either as accreting plate margins (ophiolitic pyrite-chalcopyrite massive sulfides such as Betts Cove, Whalesback, York Harbour, chromite at Lewis Hills, and asbestos at Baie Verte), at consuming plate margins (Kuroko-type polymetallic massive sulfides such as Buchans and Pilleys Island, porphyry-type Mo-Cu at Rencontre, fluorite at St. Lawrence), or within plates (zinc deposits at Daniels Harbour, sedimentary iron ores at Wabana, manganese in Conception Bay.) As these metallogenic patterns can be convincingly extrapolated southward into the Appalachians and northward to the Caledonides, they provide an important means of eliminating and selecting areas for particular exploration targets. Sonic criteria are described for the recognition of these environments of differing economic potential.

In this decade mining companies in western Canada have searched for reliable and inexpensive ways to improve mine productivity. Truck dispatching systems, equipment vital sign monitoring and sensing, vehicle guidance systems, have all been considered. In this paper the off -highway vehicle monitoring systems used or planned to be installed at surface coal mines in western Canada are described. The monitoring systems are divided according to their function and application; installation and testing procedures are described, as well as the economic benefits to the mining operation.

Attempts were made to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate particles by adding selected frothers or precoated fine particles. A number of frothers for floating, specifically coarse coal and metallic minerals, were examined. Two of the frothers increased the flotation recovery of coarse phosphate by 3% on bench scale. Plant evaluation yielded improvements in overall phosphate recovery in the presence of these frothers. Addition of fine particles was also found to enhance coarse flotation under given conditions. Size, amount, and hydrophobicity of the fines added was determined to have a major influence on the coarse flotation efficiency. The grade of the product with and without frothers and particulate additives remained the same. Change in froth stability and viscosity are believed to be the primary reasons for enhanced recovery of coarse phosphate particles.

In 1973, the United States production of marketable phosphate rock set a record in excess of 42 million tons. This production rate is expected to continue to increase, due to the growing international requirement for fertilizer, at a rate exceeding 5% per year well into 1977. This trend contrasts sharply with the reduced phosphate rock production levels of the 1966 - 1971 period. The natural consequence of this growing phosphate rock market is an evaluation of the variety of means whereby plant capacity can be most effectively increased. One approach toward increased plant production capacity is through large capacity flotation cells provided they can be successfully applied to the recovery of the relatively coarse product which is characteristic of the phosphate rock feed. This paper will summarize the results of a nine month evaluation test program, conducted at the Haynesworth Mine at Bradley, Florida in which the flotation circuit "specific capacity" (tons feed/ft.2 floor space) and "specific input power" (Hp/ton feed) were determined, and the feasibility of achieving economically acceptable concentrate grade and recovery levels was demonstrated, using large, high capacity, flotation cells.

Extensive deposits of bituminous, subbituminous, and lignite coals occur in the western United States (Figure 1). Over one trillion tons of identified resources have been located and inferred by geologists and more than 200 million tons of western coal are mined annually (1). In the future, production of western coals will increase significantly and approach national production levels of higher-rank eastern coals. Western coals will be utilized in new power plants as a replacement fuel for oil and gas and may be used in advanced technologies such as diesel engines or in direct-fired turbines. Since these applications require low-ash, low-sulfur coals, crushing to fine sizes and significant cleaning to remove minerals and sulfur will be required. Coal cleaning traditionally has been associated with reducing pyrite and other mineral matter from high-rank eastern coals. To date, insignificant quantities of western coals have been cleaned before utilization and limited data on their washability characteristics exist. Because of this lack of data, it is difficult to predict how these coals will react to standard washing techniques.

Since our firm was established by Mr. Price in 1937, we have followed an investment philosophy which is based on the belief that investment in growth stocks is the most assured way of achieving superior, long term investment accomplishment. There are many criteria that we use to select growth companies but the most important is a combination of superior management operating in an industry with above average growth potential. This growth stock approach is the cornerstone of our investment strategy for two of the three mutual funds sponsored by the Price organization and for our private clients. However, during the past 5 years we have seen inflation accelerate due to a variety of factors including the inability of our government to meet seemingly unlimited needs with limited revenue sources. While there might be temporary periods of price stability, we believe that inflation will still continue to be the investor's greatest problem in future years. Our conviction that inflation would increase combined with the acceleration of inflation in the late 1960s stimulated an intensive investment research effort, on our part, to identify those companies with strong natural resource bases -- who own or control large, secure, and low cost tangible assets. Over the longer term and in an environment of a depreciating dollar some of these firms should be able to develop and sell these assets at higher prices. While we still believe that investing in growth companies is a sound investment strategy to offset inflation, we also believe that certain natural resource companies will show well above average investment performance. In the newest Price mutual fund, The Rowe Price New Era Fund, we have, as a matter of policy, placed a large portion of the portfolio in natural resource companies.

When I reached Warren after the "de luxe" South American expedition I had little idea what was in store for me. From the large check Thayer had handed me just before I left New York I was pretty sure the future would be good, and that before long it would involve Anaconda. Evidently, Mr. Thayer had left it to Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway to work out the details The next morning Greenway asked me to come to his office and told me that he and Dr. Ricketts had discussed the question and that Anaconda would make me an offer I could not refuse. They proposed to pay me almost $1000 a month, more than twice my current salary. They had agreed that I should stay with Calumet and Arizona for the rest of the year to help with Bisbee development and anything I could to assist with the New Cornelia plans and construction Of course I could not turn down such a flattering offer, as I had about reached the limit of advancement with a much smaller company in anything save a high executive job, and it would be a long time before I could be ready to change from exploration and geology to operating. Greenway and I agreed that I would stay with him for the remaining eight months of 1916 without any particular title but helping in any way I thought would be most useful. Bisbee and Ajo Study It turned out to be a busy half year, in addition to many good times with my Bisbee friends. The Uplift Club did not meet as regularly as in earlier years, but Mason Ross, Jim Lewis, Bill Gohring, Roy Mitchell, Hubert d'Autremont, Arthur Notman, and I did have many "bull sessions" and poker games. Downhill, or regenerative conveyors have always been a challenge to the design engineer due to their natural instability under load. The last decade has seen the appearance of high tonnage, high negative lift conveyors with several hundred meters of drop. These conveyors have made necessary the development of new braking systems and intelligent drive controls to address their starting and stopping requirements under various load conditions. This paper describes the critical design criteria of large regenerative conveyors and some of the advances in mechanical braking systems and drive control technology developed by Conveyor Dynamics, Inc. (CDI) to address their specific requirements.

A prototype expert advisor was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to systematically offer advice on the control of a Florida phosphate operation. The PC based system receives input from remote sensors for circuit parameters such as feed rate, reagent addition, and pH and from operator entered information such as the quality of the concentrate and tailings in each of the coarse, fine, and amine flotation circuits. The computer evaluates the information using rules obtained from industry representatives and Bureau flotation experts. Recommended actions and questions are displayed to quickly guide the operator to a problem within the flotation circuit and suggest a solution. This process control system could provide more uniformity among the flotation operators and also serve as a trainer for new operators. In addition, it represents a step toward fully automated systems for phosphate flotation.

This article offers one of the infrequent looks at Chinese mining. It includes a brief review by Parrish of a tungsten symposium held there and his comments on and impressions of the mines he visited. In early Oct. 1981, a Symposium on the Geology of Tungsten was held in the Peoples Republic of China. There were approximately 100 participants. Half of them were Chinese. The remainder included representatives of the United Nations, geologists from other nations in Southeast Asia, and 10 invited specialists from other countries. The invited guests included K.F.G. Hosking of the Camborne School of Mines, United Kingdom; C.S. Hutchinson of the University of Malaysia; K. Mattson of LKAB Int. AB, Sweden; T. Kwak of Latrobe University, Australia; K. Sato and S. Ishihara of the Geological Survey of Japan; M. Clarke of the Department of Mineral Resources, Indonesia; P. Bateman of the US Geological Survey; and the author. R. Horsnail of Amax was also invited but was unable to attend because of delayed visa clearance. The meeting was noteworthy because the Chinese were presenting more than half the papers. In addition, following the formal session, everyone was taken to the famed Jiangxi tungsten district and toured four mines there. Organization and Background The idea for a symposium on tungsten geology was brought up in late 1979 during a visit to China by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and, in particular, by members of the Regional Mineral Resources Development Centre (RMRDC) of the United Nations. Discussions continued and in the spring of 1981 invitations were sent to selected geologists throughout the world. China's Ministry of Geology handled arrangements, scheduling, and logistics. Travel to China and all correspondence before the symposium were coordinated by the Bandung, Indonesia Bureau of RMRDC. All costs in China were met by the Peoples Republic of China. Airfares and "per diem" enroute for participants were paid by respective governments, sponsors, or individuals. On Oct. 10, visiting participants entered China from Hong Kong. The author and a few others traveled by train to Guangzhou (Canton). Most of the group flew in the next day. The entire group was then taken to Nanchang, traveling by sleeper train and arriving on Oct. 11. The symposium group stayed at the Kiangsi Hotel, where the meetings were held. Meetings Oct. 11 was a day of orientation and rest. The group was taken to an art museum and treated to a Chinese opera movie. The formal meetings began on Monday, Oct. 12. Simultaneous translations aided presentations, though more than half the Chinese speakers delivered their talks in English. The acoustics and sound system were excellent, and the Chinese provided 35-mm and overhead projectors. There was no screen, however, and the yellow, painted wall that was used detracted from projection clarity. In general, the Chinese papers were detailed, thoughtful, and professional. Some, naturally, were stronger than others. Taking them as a unit, one derives the following sequence to the Chinese approach to tungsten exploration: (1) Geologic investigations with mapping at a scale of 1:200,000 accompanied by only minor geochemical or geophysical work. (2) Geophysical investigation with regional gravity and magnetic surveys directed toward identifying deep, tectonic systems and seeking granites in thick, crustal environments. The Coal Pillar Rib Rating (CPRR) technique has been developed to assist in rib support design in underground coal mines. One major challenge of the data collection process is the measurement of coal strengths in the field. Schmidt hammer has been verified as a useful tool to determine coal strength. An alternative approach is to obtain the representative strength of coal mass by determining the coal lithotypes in the field based on the coal brightness profile by experienced geologists or mining engineers. In this paper, image processing techniques have been used to quantify the texture of coal images of different lithotypes with the purpose of classifying coal lithotypes. The coal images were collected from the pillar ribs with exposed surfaces in underground coal mines, and the coal lithotypes were identified when taking the images. The method of Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM) was used to analyze the textures of coal images of different lithotypes, and the texture parameters, such as contrast, homogeneity, energy, and entropy, were compared. The results show that the images of coal with different lithotypes have different textures, which can be quantified through the image processing. The results from this study demonstrate the potential of classifying coal lithotypes using rib photos and easing the data collection process of CPRR.

Because of the tremendous technological advances achieved in recent years in microcomputers, it is not only technically feasible but also economically viable to develop an automatic truck dispatching system using a microcomputer. Such an effort was initiated by the Department of mining and Geological Engineering, University of Arizona in the summer of 1983. Up to date results and experiences prove that today's microcomputers can be economically employed for such a system to be used at small to medium scale open-pit mines. An IBM/XT microcomputer with 10 MB harddisk storage, together with automatic sensing capability of truck movements at several key locations in the pit, formed the core of this system. System software is written primarily in MICROSOFT FORTRAN with supporting subroutines in MACRO assembly language. The software is designed to automatically monitor truck movement throughout the pit, to make heuristic assignments based on expected shovel availability and truck travel times, and to record production statistics. It is currently dimensioned to handle 50 trucks, 10 shovels, 10 dump sites and 3 material types. Due to the lack of funds to purchase the necessary communications hardware, the work related to the automatic sensing of truck movements has not been performed to date. Otherwise, the automatic truck dispatching-system is fully operational on a realtime mode.
