In just over a generation, the United States bentonite industry has grown from almost a rake and shovel operation into one with a multimillion ton annual production rate and exports to all corners of the globe. Bentonite production, pressed to keep pace with the soaring demand, has increased more than 10 fold in the last 30 years. The worldwide demand for bentonite is expected to double during the next eight to ten years. It remains to be seen whether U.S. producers will be able to maintain the dominant position in the world market. It should be noted that accurate statistical information regarding production or market information is difficult or impossible to obtain abroad and also within the United States. Published information obtained in response to questionnaires of the Bureau of Mines tends to be on the conservative side. FOUNDRY It has only been in the last thirty or forty years that bentonite has become an indispensible part of the age old metal casting industry. There are basically two commonly used methods of drying washed coal. They are mechanical drying (sometimes called dewatering) and thermal drying. The common methods of mechanical drying are by using vibrating screens, cross flow screens, sieve screens or Vor-Siv, vacuum filters and centrifugal dryers. With thermal drying, the common types include direct fired fluid bed, rotary drum, flash or suspension, vertical tray or cascade continuous carrier or vibrating fluid bed dryers and hollow screw dryers. In the past, it has more or less been a general rule that any time the total product is being washed, both mechanical and thermal drying was required. The reason for this was that a product moisture of 3 to 4% was required and thermal drying was and is the only practical method by which this can be accomplished. With the advent of air pollution controls and the ever increasing concentration on dust elimination, a 3 to 4% moisture product is no longer practical in either the preparation plant or in the processing plants which utilize the coal. Under the new standards, it is desirable to have a product with a 6.5 to 7% surface moisture. With this moisture range, dusting, due to handling, will bc kept at a minimum.

The quality of our environment is of great importance to all of us. Today, there is a great public concern about the degradation of our air, land, and water and the resultant slow death of our planet Earth. The miner has always been concerned with his environment. Historically, mining has been a part of the frontier. As a result, the miner has pioneered and developed many parts of the world. In the beginning, he had to hack out a place for his mine, himself, and his family. He was given accolades and praise for his accomplishments. Now, however, he is attacked as a ravager of the landscape. It was and is no different on the Marquette Iron Range in Marquette County, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Iron ore was discovered in 1845 and mining was begun by 1848. Over nearly 1 ¼ centuries, a total of 379,197,000 tons have been shipped to market. Ports, docks, railroads, and towns all had to be built in order to get that tonnage out to iron and steel makers. In those early days the environment had to be mastered, not pampered.

The first time that a geologist is confronted with the necessity of evaluating a lateritic ore deposit, he may feel that nothing could be easier. Why should there be any problems in making an economic evaluation of a relatively flat-lying, surficial ore body? After several hundred thousand dollars worth of frustrating work often culminating in a series of non-reproducible data - the evaluator may be a sadder and wiser man. This paper will try to illustrate why the evaluation of lateritic bauxite and nickel deposits is among the most difficult problems confronting an economic geologist - and, more especially, how this problem can be solved. Volumes have been published on descriptive and genetic studies of lateritic ores. Obviously, there is time today only for the briefest description of such an ore body. The laterite is a soil formed under tropical conditions and resulting in the concentration, within the soil zone, of certain tri-valent metals.- especially, aluminum and nickel. The soil zone is divided into two parts: (a) the true soil or lateritic zone and (b) the zone of, partially altered bed rock or saprolite. Preparation for flotation begins with dragline mining, pumping, washing, screening, and desliming. Slimes, nominally -150 mesh material, constitute large quantities of phosphate and water which are a disposal problem. Older techniques involve sizing at about 35 mesh for separate coarse and fine treatment. The plus 14 mesh fraction does not require concentration. Coarse treatment includes agglomerate spiralling, belt flotation, thickening, scrubbing with sulfuric acid, de-oiling for reagent removal, and cationic flotation of fine quartz. A recent trend is to screen at coarser than 35 mesh size and eliminate coarse particle treatment, sacrificing some grade of this product. Techniques for flotation concentration of the fine size fraction are discussed.

Changes in our energy, national security, and commerce needs have necessitated identification of new sources of minerals, such as rare earths, lithium, copper, silver, aluminum, titanium, and the minerals on the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) list of critical minerals (USGS, 2022). With the need to domestically produce these minerals, more mining will be required within the U.S. Some of these critical minerals deposit with naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), therefore, mining these minerals may concentrate NORM to the point that some states may require licensing and radiation protection programs. NORM is not regulated by the Federal government; it is regulated by the individual states. Consequently, overall national state of NORM regulation is chaotic with each individual state either choosing to regulate or not regulate NORM, and, if a state chooses to regulate NORM, then that state develops its own unique regulations. Further complicating the regulatory environment, states utilize a wide variety of strategies for regulating NORM, which sometimes results in inappropriate regulations, inconsistencies with specific radionuclides that are regulated, and inconsistencies with specific NORM types that are regulated. This paper will review the nature of NORM regulations, identify regulatory traps, and provide general guidance for identifying NORM and potentially avoiding regulatory jeopardy. Because of the chaotic nature of NORM regulations nationally, seeking guidance from qualified professionals with relevant expertise is recommended. Also, contacting the appropriate regulatory agency to gain a complete understanding of the NORM regulatory environment is useful for maintaining compliance.

In the mid-1970's a major new prospect was proved in a previously unworked region of North East Leicester- shire, United Kingdom. Preliminary estimates from borehole information showed over 500 million tonnes of recoverable reserves. A special Planning Team was set up, to co-ordinate the work for the two local Areas, South Nottinghamshire and South Midlands (management of production of the UK National Coal Board is organised in twelve such Areas). The team was led by one of the authors as Deputy Director, Mining, North East Leicestershire Prospect (NELP). The remit imposed by the National Coal Board was to analyse the possible options of number, location and eventual rates of output of shaft or drift access; to select a recommended alternative in the light of geological, mining, topographical and environmental considerations; and prepare submissions in accordance with standard Board practice on major projects - such submissions including detailed engineering design, financial appraisal, and full risk assessment. To assist the Planning Team, surface and underground consult- ant engineers were appointed to prepare feasibility studies of specific civil and engineering problems.

Despite its importance in various diverse industries, research on beneficiation strategies of boron minerals has not received enough attention. Boron minerals are primarily upgraded by wet processing methods. However, severe environmental constrains have accelerated the development of dry processing techniques such as calcination. Interestingly, boron minerals, colemanite, ulexite and borax undergo respectively decrepitation (fragmentation), shrinkage and expansion upon heat treatment. Each mineral then requires a different beneficiation scheme. In this study, laboratory and pilot plant studies on calcination of boron minerals conducted in our laboratories are reviewed along with their implications in commercial operations.

Newmont Mining Corporation has been processing refractory gold ores by roasting since January 1995. The ores are refractory due to the association of the gold with iron sulfides, namely pyrite and marcasite, and the presence of carbonaceous components and is oxidized in an oxygen-enriched gaseous atmosphere. The structural characteristics of the calcine have a strong influence on the eventual recovery of gold by cyanidation. These characteristics are strongly dependent upon the roasting conditions, mainly the roasting temperature. Originally, the sulfides and carbonaceous matter were oxidized at a temperature that typically ranged between 535 and 560 °C. Controlling the roasting temperature within the lower and narrower range of 510 to 515 °C produced a calcine with a larger surface area(e.g. higher porosity), which resulted in a gold recovery increase of3.3 percent in 2001 equivalent to 5.1 million dollars of additional gross revenue. The new strategies of operating at temperatures never tested before are discussed. It constituted a great challenge to the control room operators for the lower operating temperature falls much closer to the ignition temperature of the sulfide ore and smaller and more frequent adjustments in operating parameters were needed to improve and maintain high gold recoveries. Based on the encouraging results that were achieved in 2001, a decision was made to install a “smart” process control system because the roaster temperature control was performed by manual inputs from the control room operators. The development and implementation of the control system to reduce or eliminate the temperature variability between the different control room operators commenced in June of 2002 and was fully operational by the end of October. Lower roaster temperatures were achieved (500 to 505 °C), which resulted in further increase of gold recovery by about two percent. The overall recovery increase equated to 8.0 million dollars of additional revenue for the first 10 months of 2002.

"INTRODUCTION This report summarizes a research about mines which are transitioning from surface to underground mines. It is a guide to make strategic decision in these increasing amount of mines. Capital and operating costs are linked with major strategic decisions in the exploitation of an ore body. This is the reason to analyze costs related to this transitioning world trend. There are multiple reasons for transitioning from Open-Pit (OP) to Underground (UG) mining. The primary economic incentive for going UG is that the cost per unit of ore from OP mining eventually exceeds that from UG extraction. This is due to the excessive amount of waste that must be extracted when the depth of the pit increases. In addition, the reduced footprint of UG operations contributes to diminish the environmental impact on the surface. Furthermore, it becomes more difficult to find new, easily accessible ore deposits. Then, a cost model helps to guide strategic decisions in the transition from OP-to-UG mines. Objectives • Propose a methodology to guide strategic decisions in the transition from OP to UG mining. • Create an integrated cost model based on existing OP and UG individual cases. • Identify and characterize a group of mines transitioning from OP to UG. • Analyze operating and capital costs of a particular transitioning from OP to UG mine. MAIN CONCEPTS Open Pit Mining (OP) The main decisions in OP mines are: Cut-off grade, Stripping Ratio (SR), equipment size, stockpiling, pushback sequencing and processing capacity. The stripping ratio is measured as the tonnage of waste required to be removed to reach and extract one tonne of ore. The material extracted from an OP exploitation can be classified as waste and ore. This classification depends on the cut-off grade. The cut-off grade indicates the minimum amount of material with economic value in a block. The waste from the mine is going to the waste dump and the ore is going to stockpiles where will be store and then going to the processing plant (leaching or concentrator). The waste of this process is going to the tailing pond big pools. And the product is sell in the market. Another important issue is the mining capacity which is going to define the investment in mining equipment. Underground Mining (UG) The first decision to be made in order to open an underground mine is selecting the mining method. Caving methods are the more productive and have lower operating costs. There are three caving methods: Block Caving (BC), Panel Caving (BC) and Sublevel Caving (BC). The access development could be an horizontal adit or a straight or downspiral decline. A shaft could be used for inclined or vertical access. Other key issues are: equipment capacity, cut-off grade and production sequencing."

Additional progress in comminution can be achieved if the compressive crushing principle commonly used at present is changed to one where particles are fragmented by the tensile growth of preexisting internal flaws or cracks, under internal waterjet pressure. This idea was studied in a number of tests and generated results and conclusions are the subject of this paper. It covers tests with different jets imposed on rock samples during compressive load as well as without any loading.

Because of a, work stoppage at the Carlsbad plant, IMC faced the challenge of operating a 24-hour-a-day mine and plant with inexperienced maintenance and production crews. This is an underground mining operation, using the room-and-pillar mining- method. The mine was entirely, mechanized with conventional equipment, was hoisting an average of 13,539 tons off ore per 24 hours, and employed a, mine maintenance group of 100 men. The 100-man, mine maintenance group was equally divided between mechanics and electricians. In re-forming this maintenance group, two main objectives were to be achieved (1) a general upgrading off the intelligence level; and (2) the elimination of craft lines for greater flexibility.

The "Gold" chapter of my adventures did not start with a rush. On May 14, 193 1, Thayer Lindsley wired me asking if I could examine the Pioneer mine in British Columbia right away. I replied, "Yes," but I had never heard of the Pioneer and, although many others were asking about gold during the Depression, none were doing anything about it. A little later another wire asked me to meet Gen. A.D. McRae in Vancouver in a couple of days. This was the start of 20 years of intermittent examinations for Lindsley. I took the train to Seattle and the night boat to Vancouver where I met Gen. McRae and his associate Victor Spencer. McRae had been one of the Canadian leaders during World War I and, for his services, he had been made a Canadian senator, a lifetime job. Col. Spencer was proprietor of a big store in Vancouver, and almost as distinguished. A seaplane was waiting for us in the harbor, to be piloted by Major McLaren, one of the leading Canadian flyers during the war. He flew us up the long fjord of Howe Sound and then on north along the route of the provincial-owned Pacific Great Eastern Railway past jagged snow-clad peaks to the village of Shalalth on Seton Lake. A rental car run by Curley Evans, a noted British Columbia character, was waiting for us in Shalalth and it took us for 50 miles over one of the steepest and crookedest roads I had ever seen. At the end of the road the Pioneer camp was set in a deep canyon in the Coast Range. Dave Sloan, another British Columbia character, was waiting for us and he immediately took me underground, at nine in the evening, to see the Pioneer ore. The ore body was then a small one but it was running over an ounce of gold per ton. The name Dave Sloan became synonymous with Pioneer. McRae and Spencer told me the history of Sloan arid the Pioneer on the way to the mine. The rich surface ore had first been discovered about 1879. For geostatistical applications, heterogeneous spatial phenomena are better modeled as mixtures of populations. However, the modeling of the constituent populations can become complex. The alternative mixture model offers a simplified approach to the w modeling problem. The model is applied and tested on the Walker Lake data set. Compared to the univariate ordinary kriging model, the alternative model generates less biased block estimates.

This paper investigates the design approaches taken and the philosophy employed during the construction of the Metropolitan Airport Commission (MAC) storm tunnels, part of the Phase 4 Segment of the MAC Trunk Storm Sewer Project at Minneapolis St.-Paul International Airport, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. URS Corporation was retained to provide a design and Construction Management (CM)services for the MAC Trunk Storm Sewer Project. A case history of the design and construction challenges of the project is presented. The MAC storm tunnels consisted of the construction of twin 10-foot inside diameter (I.D.) tunnels within 7 feet of an existing 72-inch I.D. storm pipe at the base of a 70-foot high highway embankment. The analysis required during the design stage of the project is discussed. This analysis and our design approach provided a defensible framework and justification to make design decisions on relevant issues including: allowable spacing of new and existing structures; preferred order of construction; expected ground deformation behavior; response of lining types to adjacent construction; and effects of proposed changes to design at the submittal stage and during construction.

Determining the identicalness levels of the same model trucks working in open pit mine transportation system by means of statistical analysis methods is very significant in terms of availability analysis. In this study, the identicalness levels of two trucks picked randomly from the 170-short-tonne truck fleet working in open pit coal mine over one-year period were examined through a non-parametric test, Mann-Whitney U test for two samples. Time to failures (TTFs) and Time to Repairs (TTRs) of the trucks were analyzed with this test technique and then whether they were identical or not was determined. In order to determine whether the trucks identified to be identical at the end of this test displayed the same mining performances within the same open pit transportation system, the availability analysis of the identical trucks was carried out. As a result of the availability analysis, it was observed that the trucks had availability values that were very close to each other. It was also determined that Mann-Whitney U test could be employed together with availability analysis. Finally, it was observed that Mann-Whitney U test for two samples could yield rapid results in the performance analysis of complex systems like open pit mines.

The writings of Agricola in the 16th century show that mining was important in the Middle Ages. Today we mine more mineral commodities in greater tonnages than ever before. This long and fascinating history closely tied with the economic development of the human race is one of the charms of the mining industry. It also, unfortunately, gives rise to some widespread misconceptions.

The contribution of the various outby sources to the contamination of the panel intake air has been the subject of a relatively small number of studies. In this paper, after a brief review of past studies, results from recent experiments on rates of contamination of intake air by outby dust sources are presented. Present study indicates that each outby source by itself may not be a major contributor. The loading point in the continuous miner section did not appear to be of major concern from contamination point of view. Belt entry including transfer point contributes significantly to the intake air dust level, though reentrainment was not a major source of dust. In longwall panels, the stageloader-crusher was the most dominant source. The panel-to-main belt transfer point was not a major source. Taken collectively, the contribution of all outby sources can be significant. In one longwall section, at the beginning of the longwall face, the contribution of all the outby sources and the headgate cut-out operation was observed to be about 80% of the permissible exposure limit (2 mg/m3). In modem high production longwalls, the application of effective dust control measures to reduce the dust generated from the outby sources is essential to achieve compliance with the dust standards.

This study reviews and analyzes the empirical methods available for designing the capacities of coal mine gathering belts. The analyses lead to recommendations concerning the application and implementation of each empirical method. Operations research techniques, mainly simulation models, are also briefly mentioned, and a few recommendations are made concerning their selection and application. The objective of the study is to provide a reliable basis for the practicing engineer to properly select, apply, and implement a capacity design method.
