Accelerometers and pressure transducers mounted in suspension components can be used to monitor the ride of haulage trucks. Presently, it is difficult to tell what caused a jolt to the truck using either pressure or acceleration data alone. When information from a Global Positioning System is recorded at the same time as shock pressures or acceleration data, then the exact location of an event can be determined. Mine management can then determine what caused the jolt to the truck.

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. This will be the 21st Annual National Mining Museum and Induction Banquet. The four inductees are Lew Eklund, 76, Carrie Jane Billings Everson (1843-1914), ?Colonel? William C. Greene (1851-1911) and Arthur L. Hawkesworth (1860-1905). Lew Eklund founded Eklund Drilling that is now based in Elko, NV. He invented many designs that play a major role in today?s mining industry. His Cyclo Blower and various sampling devices he designed helped to revolutionize gold deposit exploration by allowing mining companies to effectively sample microscopic gold. Carrie Jane Billings Everson discovered and proved a method for bulk oil flotation concentration of mineral ores, the precursor to modern froth flotation methods of minerals concentration. She patented her process in 1886. In the early 1890s, coworkers built and operated demonstration plants incorporating her bulk oil flotation process. ?Colonel? William C. Greene was responsible for the development of the great copper mining properties of Cananea, Mexico. In seven years, he went from ragged cattleman and adventurer to the greatest captain of industry the borderlands have ever seen. Arthur L. Hawkesworth was a master mechanic for Anaconda Copper. He invented the detachable drill bit. His invention generated tremendous savings for the mining industry in time, in dollars and in safer operating conditions underground. His bit?s long lasting contribution to improved mine economics is immeasurable. The 21st Annual National Mining Museum and Induction Banquet will begin with an open house and reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The inductions will bring to 201 the number of mining ?greats? whose engraved photographs and biographical sketches are installed in the National Mining Hall of Fame.

Paste backfill, because of its colloidal or water-holding properties, does not produce run-off water when placed underground. Paste backfill is generally, prepared from relatively low water content, full mill tailings with a certain proportion of ultra-fine particles and mixed with cement, thus producing early and better strength. Mill plant discharge tailings and other materials available at or near the mine site such as sand, aggregates or waste rock are used as blending materials in the mix design. This study investigates the influence of the above-mentioned blending materials on the mechanical characteristics of paste backfill, as well as the grading, shape, specific surface area, mineralogy and workability of the different mix design.

As part of the Link Light Rail project in Seattle, WA, work was completed at the Pine Street Stub Tunnel (PSST) in early 2007 for the Central Link project. This tunnel was excavated using cut-and-cover construction within the limits of Pine Street. The stub tunnel provides a turn back via double crossover for light rail trains running in the Downtown Transit Tunnel (DTT), as well as a connection point for the next phase of the project, the University Link (Fig. 1). Designing the new University Link tunnel connection to the existing PSST was a tricky task. The on-site geotechnical conditions, buried obstructions, geometry, requirements for construction and balancing operational considerations and neighborhood stakeholder concerns associated with the recently completed PSST combined to create a uniquely challenging assignment.

When defining a ?megaproject,? one need only to look at Seattle, WA?s State Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement project. This $3.1-billion project is one of the largest of its kind in the world, and includes the use of the world?s largest tunnel boring machine (TBM). However, for as large as the Alaskan Way project is ? especially given the size of the TBM being used ? there are several other megaprojects underway around the world. Each has its own challenges that require innovative design techniques and financing arrangements, as well as variations on established tunneling technologies. So it was that 266 tunneling and underground construction professionals ? owners, contractors and engineers ? convened in Seattle in November for the Cutting Edge Conference on Megaprojects. This was the second joint meeting between the Underground Construction Association of SME and the North American Tunneling Journal. The first joint conference took place in April 2012 in Miami, FL and attracted 238 attendees. A third joint conference, to be held in 2014, is in the planning stage. The key reason Seattle was chosen as the site of the megaprojects conference is the Alaskan Way Viaduct project. Before the conference began, many of the attendees were able to visit the project and get a close look at Bertha, the Hitachi Zosen earth pressure balance TBM that is boring the tunnel. In addition, the conference included an exhibit that attracted 20 industry suppliers, up from 10 the previous year in Miami. The 25 presentations during the two-day conference covered all aspects of the tunneling and underground construction of megaprojects. Topics included the Alaskan Way Viaduct project; considerations for procurement and contracting; political risk, financing and insurance; international megaprojects; risk and risk sharing and project delivery. Each session concluded with panel discussions.

When addressing Germany’s resource supplies, we need to distinguish between those domestically available and imported ones. Resource extraction ostensibly competes with the designation of protection areas. However, the parallel existence of wildlife and plant life, and operations in the areas used for resource extractions is continually underestimated. The European Commission has compiled guidance documents facilitating the extraction of resources from protected areas. With regard to resource productivity, the market appears to be the appropriate instrument for minimising resource consumption. Policy makers are now called upon to create a legal framework leading to a consensus accepted by society.

Finally, since some people may not be sure what the Metal Mining Agency is or what this Agency, I would like to briefly introduce the Metal Mining Agency of Japan.

Energy West Mining Company (EWMC) has implemented a geologic program for improving stability and support requirements along deep two-entry longwall gateroads at its Deer Creek Mine operations located near Huntington, Utah. Together with geotechnical monitoring and concurrent review of mine seismicity in cooperation with MTI staff, it has become possible to improve longwall layout designs for two seam extraction of the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon seams. The geologic program consists of surface and in-mine exploration drilling, surface and in-mine geologic mapping, rock mechanics testing and detailed measurements of changes in depositional and structural conditions during development of every longwall gateroad. The geotechnical program consists of underground measurements at seven locations in two neighboring mining districts located in the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon coal seams under moderate to deep cover. Within the last five years, additional measurements, including data on seismicity and face conditions, have been incorporated into the data collection program for verifying the insitu coal strength and load transfer mechanisms for improving two-seam designs and support systems. Geologic mapping results are also used to predict local stability of headgate and tailgate entries, combining mine roof mapping, stratigraphic profiles of the coal and roof, and depth-of-cover information and dual-seam mine overlays, for use by operations personnel in planning roof and rib support for the retreating longwall sections.

With the dawning of a new century came the beginning of a new era in the coal industry. Instead of the traditional practice of only buying and selling produced coal in the United States, a coal futures market was established. The New York Mercantile Exchange began trading coal futures in July 2001. But, even in this new era, many of the old is-sues that have beset the coal industry still remain, as was evident in2001. Coal production increased to are cord level during 2001, according to preliminary data from the US Energy Information Administration(EIA). Production in 2001 rose by4% to 1.01 Gt (1.12 billion st), compared with 2000 (Table 1). This barely surpassed the previous record level of 1 Gt (1.11 billion st)set in 1998. Coal consumption remained unchanged. The additional production was used to replenish the depleted stockpiles that had resulted after two years of declining coal production and increasing coal consumption.

The gold leaching using cyanide from ore or waste has been almost universally in use [1]. Recently, biological gold bioleaching using cyanide producing bacteria, e.g. Chromobacterium violaceum, Pseudomonas fluorescens, or P. aeruginosa, has been investigated as environmental friendly and cost effective method. Among them, C. violaceum has been reported as effective cyanide producing bacterium on gold leaching [2, 3]. C. violaceum produces cyanide using glycine as a direct precursor and subsequently detoxify the cyanide by ß-cyanoalanine synthase [4]. However, until today only 0.026 ? 16.9 mg/L of cyanide production in YP medium has been reported in the literatures by C. violaceum [4-6]. Comparing with adding cyanide chemical, biogenic cyanide concentration is lower than the cyanide concentration added in traditional cyanidation. Since cyanide also forms complexes with a number of other elements such as iron, nickel, zinc, silver, copper, and platinum, it is very important for gold recovery to investigate the enhancement of biological cyanide production and set optimal experimental condition. Most of early studies on gold bioleaching by C. violaceum have been performed to investigate gold leaching mechanism using gold powder, and recently various resources such as ores, electronic scrap, and printed circuit boards of waste electronics [7]. Few studies have dealt with gold bioleaching from low-grade ore. In this research the feasibility of gold bioleaching by C. violaceum from low-grade ores containing gold was evaluated and fundamental study was performed for further scale-up study. The aim of this study was to improve the potential of gold bioleaching by C. violaceum from gold-containing ore; in particular, enhancement of biological cyanide production.

Proper analysis of washabiity data can lead to the development of a maximum yield coal preparation plant flow sheet. Simulations, as simple as spreadsheet mass and water balancing, are important in examining yield maximization and middlings liberation. Key to such attribute tracking flow sheet simulations is the distribution model, expressing the probability of a species reporting to the product stream. There are many such models in the literature. This paper examines a functional form that can represent or fit most of the proposed distribution functions.

This paper reports on research on leaching pyrite in a germ-free system. The effects of mineral particle size, pulp potential and various oxidation agents on pyrite leaching were studied. The results indicated that a smaller mineral particle size leads to a higher leaching rate of pyrite. The optimum results were obtained with a mineral particle size of -0.037 mm. The pulp potential reflected the leaching process and an increasing pulp potential improved pyrite leaching. The leaching rate rapidly increased with the addition of oxidation agents such as Fe3+ and H2O2. However, the precipitate generated by ferric ion coated the surface of the pyrite and prevented further leaching.

"The ancestral Ringarooma River in northeast Tasmania has transported alluvial tin and other heavy minerals from their onshore source of stanniferous Devonian granites downstream into what is now Ringarooma Bay. Previous exploration work has demonstrated the presence of potentially economic tin mineralisation within the palaeochannels and terraces associated with the submerged river.The offshore tin resource lies directly on the seabed or with less than 2 m of overburden, and within 5 - 50 m water depths in the wider bay area. The main river channel continues offshore for at least 13 km, with high tin grades found within the palaeochannel but also dispersed across the sea floor as a sheet wash, a result of Quaternary sea level change reworking the placer deposits. This drowned portion of the coastal plain contains a continuation of rich tin leads as low gradient anastomosing channels, and has been delineated by marine seismic and drilling activity since the 1960s. Tin grades in the Tertiary and Quaternary alluvial profiles vary from 50 - 300 g/m3, with the highest concentrations in the coarser basal horizons. A previous offshore explorer estimated a resource of 194 Mm3 at 150 - 250 g/m3.Kenex Ltd created 3D models of the paleochannels and the mineralisation with the aim of better constraining the resource estimate and identifying additional depositional areas. The modelling was undertaken with the input of geophysical data, bathymetry and geochemical sampling of the seabed surface and from historic offshore drill holes. A prospectivity model covering Ringarooma Bay was produced to target tin-bearing gravels. Predictive maps were created to represent various features of the offshore mineral system, including assessing gradient changes in palaeochannels and their sinuosity. The model identifies areas with higher potential for alluvial tin mineralisation and will be used to focus the exploration programme over tenements currently held by Kenex Ltd."

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (District) is in the final phase of completing the Calumet System component of the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) by bringing the Thornton Composite Reservoir online by 2014. The Thornton Composite Reservoir will provide nearly 30 billion liters (7.9 billion gallons) of additional storage for minimization of combined sewer overflows(CSO) and flooding in the Chicago metropolitan area. The project requires that the existing 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter Thorn Creek tunnel conveying overbank flood flows is re-routed and connected to the Thornton Composite Reservoir. This paper presents the components of the Thornton Composite Reservoir and specifically the detailed evaluation of a drill-blast tunnel. Other project features include an access shaft, control gate, energy dissipating structure, bulkheads, and live tunnel connection. The construction contract will be procured in late 2009.

Introduction Abandoned mill tailings deposits can be found throughout the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, indicative of mining activities that originated during the great gold rush days of 1875. The Refuse Act of 1899 attempted to regulate the deposit of debris from mines and stamp works. But, in most cases, huge volumes of mine and milling wastes were disposed of in ways no longer considered environmentally acceptable. Restoration of gold mill tailings deposits is a relatively new practice to the Black Hills area. This discussion will present an overview of the environmental setting, environmental problems associated with past tailings disposal practices, practices being implemented to solve these problems, and prospects related to present the future tailings disposal practices. Environmental Setting An understanding of climatic characteristics, geology, surface and ground water hydrology conditions, and the physical and chemical characteristics of selected mill tailings deposits will aid in understanding environmental problems associated with tailings disposal and restoration. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Alignment The Strenger Tunnel forms part of the S16 four-lane expressway between Landeckand Bludenz. The construction of this important East-West connection started in 1973with the Arlberg Road Tunnel as its key constituent. Beginning in 1992, solutions for the section between Pians and Flirsch were investigated. Efforts to conserve nature and to avoid potential avalanche and landslide areas led to a solution detouring the villages in the Stanz valley. The starting points were predetermind by the intersections at Pians in the East and at Flirsch in the West. As a result of the expected traffic load and the comparatively high gradient of 2.9%, both one-way, two-lane tubes were constructed at once. The north tube is 5.851 m long, the south tube 5.775 m, see Figure 1. Introduction The Open Cut is one of the best known landmarks in South Dakota's Black Hills. It is the site of the original discovery of the Homestake ledge, or lead, in 1876. Between that time and 1945, the Open Cut produced about 36 Mt (40 million st) of gold ore, the majority of which was drawn from underground operations. In 1981, a drilling program was undertaken to determine how much ore the old timers left behind. The results of this study indicated an ore body made up of broken and caved ground, and solid blocks in pillars and crowns. Reserves are estimated at about 6.8 Mt (7.5 million st) of gold ore, grading at 4 g/t (0.116 oz per st). Total tonnage of material, including waste, is estimated at more than 60 Mt (66 million st). The mining plan is a combination open pit and underground operations. The bottom 78 m (255 ft) will be mined by the underground panel-caving method. The open pit was designed as a contractor operation up to the expected milling stage or the point of sustained ore production. The pit was designed to avoid disturbance of US Highway 85 near Lead, SD. In 1983, the South Dakota Board of Minerals and Environment approved the mining and reclamation plan. Test mining began in the north of the Open Cut using open pit methods. Upon completion of the test pit, Homestake Mining's board of directors approved an expanded mine plan. They committed an additional $27.1 million to prestrip the ore body that is expected to yield 23 t (750,000 oz) of gold. Project life is estimated at 15 years. Exploration program In early 1980, 10 diamond drill holes were drilled from the surface in the vicinity of the east side of the Open Cut. The reserves delineated by that drilling were too small to justify their development. A continuation of this study attempted to quantify the tonnage remaining in the bottom of the Open Cut in the crushed remnants of old stope-and-crown pillars. This was originally thought to be minable by improved drawhole methods using highly mechanized procedures. By early 1981, however, thinking turned toward surface mining methods. The effort to quantify minable ore tonnage ultimately involved drilling 385 reverse-circulation rotary drill holes. These were drilled from August 1981 to March 1983 in several groups of holes. Each group, or drilling program, had a slightly different immediate goal or purpose. The holes were drilled to various depths using truck-mounted Drill Tech 40 drills with doublewalled 76 mm (3 in.) pipe with 134 mm (5.25 in.) three-cone rotary bits. Initially, wet drilling was employed using a cyclone collection system. Since cutting recovery was not as high as it should have been, all subsequent drilling was dry. The cuttings were collected and deposited by way of a cyclone into the sample bag. The pickup for the cuttings using the three-cone bits was about 50 mm (2 in.) above the bottom of the hole. Overall cutting recovery for the drilling program was estimated at 75%. Samples were taken on each 1.5 m (5 ft) of hole drilled. Each sample was split into three 48-g (1-2/3 assay ton) charges. The accepted value was the straight average of the three charges. Because of the known "nugget effect," assays were nearly impossible to duplicate. Therefore, to validate the regular assays, a series of screen fire assays were run. Based on this method of assays and checks, it was concluded that 10% more ounces would be produced than indicated by mine grade. Test pit The northernmost portion of the mine as planned is known as the Terraville test pit. This portion was mined ahead of the rest and separately. It provided answers to questions on slope stability, reserves correlation, mill recoveries, mining costs, and surface mining conditions in various weather and ground conditions since many boulders and much timber were expected. The mining plan for this portion of the pit was successful. More ore was mined than was expected. Mixing of Open Cut ore with underground ore in the mill feed was successful. The trend in both the metallic and non-metallic mining industry is toward processing increasing y higher tonnages of lower grade ores, thereby resulting in a growing interest in progressively larger volume individual machines in the flotation circuit. Because of the relatively high cost of large flotation machine development and evaluation, it is important to establish a rational basis by which the existing smaller flotation machine experience can be extrapolated to establish the configuration of the next larger family of flotation machines with a minimum of development modification in the field. This paper reviews the R&D approach used in translating smaller flotation machine experience to establish the configuration of a 1000 cu ft (2B.3 cu m) induced air machine. Internal cell hydrodynamic principles, which governed this extrapolation, and cell (liquid) surface and froth management considerations will be reviewed, and prototype machine mill tests will be summarized.

Indian tribes own a substantial portion of the West's minerals. More importantly, Indian reservations contain coal, oil and gas, uranium, and oil shale reserves in unusually large and unencumbered blocks. Many tribes are now prepared to intensify development of their large reserves knowing that they can offer energy partners the unique opportunity to develop major energy facilities free of overlapping local, state, and federal permitting authorities. The tribes, therefore, can offer mineral developers both substantial reserves and an unusual degree of freedom from a multiplicity of government regulation. In the past, Indians and energy companies enjoyed only partial success as business partners. Indian tribes lacked the resources and know-how to act as equal partners with large oil and gas and mining operators. The tribes relied on the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) to initiate and execute reservation energy projects, and as a result the tribes never developed adequate tribal structures and the expertise to responsibly manage their energy resources. At the same time industry made little effort to understand and learn the laws, customs, and institutions existing on Indian reservations. To the contrary, industry found it easier to bypass the tribes and deal with BIA officials. But the situation has changed. In 1975 the tribes organized an effective coalition, the Council of Energy Resources Tribes (CERT), which recently acquired substantial federal assistance to bring the tribes a level of technical and business expertise that begins to equal that of industry. Because the tribes have changed the rules of the game, industry must now change and learn to work directly with tribal governments. A working knowledge of Indian law, practices, customs, and policies must be acquired by energy companies before beginning negotiations with tribal governments for development of reservation energy resources.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) is currently conducting a coal resource assessment of the coalbeds and zones that are projected to provide the bulk of the nation’s resources for the next few decades. The Pittsburgh and Upper Freeport coals are the first two beds in the northern and central Appalachian basin region to undergo fully digital coal assessments. The bed-specific assessments are being carried out in partnership with the state geologic surveys of West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Comprehensive stratigraphic and geochemical databases have been developed for both of the beds. The extent of the bed with mined areas, structure contour, isopach, and overburden thickness maps for the Pittsburgh coal bed have been released as USGS open-file reports.
