Recent research conducted by NIOSH's Pittsburgh Re¬search Laboratory showed that electrical current levels permitted under present regulations may not limit cable temperatures to less than 90°C in reeled trailing cables. Reeled cables, which are tightly wrapped with many turns and which carry current in an enclosed space, can become overheated due to poor heat transfer. This overheating can cause the cable insulation to soften, making them prone to damage. The damaged insulation reduces the life of the cable and can lead to shock, electrocution and mine fires. This paper describes a method of measuring the conductor tem¬perature of mine trailing cables during normal operation. The temperature is measured using a 50/125-, µm graded index multimode optical fiber located in the center of the metallic conductors. Distributed temperature measurements are made using an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR). This system is capable of measuring temperatures with an accuracy of ± I °C over a length of 4 km at I -mintervals. With this unique way of measuring temperature, tests can be conducted that simulate actual mine conditions. "Search Amazon.com using the keyword “leadership,” and you are rewarded with a list of over 144,000 titles. There is no shortage of books and articles, many of them well written, with excellent ideas. So why is there still a constant cry for effective leadership in organizations? Often, the person in charge has personal blinders that prevent them from seeing or understanding how to implement the newest leadership idea or method. Either deliberately or subliminally, there is a disconnect from learning about leadership, and actually modelling and implementing what has been learned. Some current research in leadership theory can provide insight and tools to address this issue. INTRODUCTION Let’s start with a discussion of terms. Pseudo is defined by Webster (2015) as “Being apparently rather actually as stated.” Synonyms include affected, assumed, contrived, fake, false, phony, pretended, and artificial. Antonyms for pseudo provide additional clarity, especially when we consider terms normally associated with effective leadership: genuine, natural, unaffected, unforced. A similar type from my world of academia is a pseudointellectual, “A person exhibiting intellectual pretentions that have no basis in sound scholarship” (Dictionary.com, 2015). This is a person pretending to have an interest in intellectual activities for status; a fraudulent intellectuality. The thought of applying the term pseudo to leadership first occurred to me while reading Power and Innocence by Rollo May (1972). In discussing the dynamics of power, and how the innocent are often victims of the exercise of power, especially the more aggressive and destructive types of power, he saw two types of innocence. The first he called authentic innocence, which he described as a childlike clarity that carried into adulthood. The second type he called pseudoinnocence, a type of naïveté that makes a virtue of powerlessness, weakness, and helplessness; being more childish than childlike (p. 48-50). Just as there is the potential for pseudoinnocence and pseudointellectuals, it is also possible to experience pseudo leadership. (I hope the gentle reader is not troubled by my decision to use pseudo leadership as two separate words, in contrast to the use of compound words for pseudoinnocence and pseudointellectual cited above. Since there is no official definition of pseudo leadership, I have exercised my author’s prerogative to treat it as two words, both because I think in this particular application this makes the most sense, and also I think it is easier to read). As we will see, there are numerous theories applied to leadership. What is so troubling to many of us in organizations, there are a myriad of “leaders” in companies espousing pet theories, but very few instances where the actions of these individuals match their words. This is a particularly important problem when we look at the effect this has on the day to day operations of a mine, and where effective leadership (or its absence) can have a profound impact on both productivity and safety."

Sodium silicate (water glass) is a modifier reagent widely used in flotation with the function of a depressant or dispersant. The interaction between sodium silicate and mineral surfaces is still not well understood. This investigation aimed to illuminate the sodium silicate action mechanism as a depressant in the flotation of the minerals quartz and calcite. The experiments were done with high-purity mineral samples in the particle size range below 147 µm. The microflotation tests in a modified Hallimond tube showed that, in all systems tested, the efficiency of sodium silicate increased with the concentration. At concentrations above 1,500 g/t, almost total depression (96% for calcite and 97% for quartz) was achieved. The variation of sodium silicate modulus did not alter the quartz flotation performance in the presence of amine (150 g/t). The most efficient depression pH range was observed between 5 and 8. Above pH 10, the depressant action of sodium silicate was negligible. The infrared spectra obtained at pH 7 after silicate contact showed the presence of the groups OH and Si-OH, both suggesting that the adsorption of the neutral species Si(OH)4, as well as siloxane groups (Si-O-Si), attributed to adsorption of polymeric species. Sharing electron pairs is the proposed adsorption mechanism between Si(OH)4 and polymeric species and the surface sites (Si-O on quartz and Ca-O on calcite). At pH 11, the electrostatic repulsion prevents the species adsorption, impairing the sodium silicate action.

A numerical technique is described which can be used to model the quantity and distribution of air flow through broken rock. The method can also describe gas concentration and temperature distribution. A computer code implementing the numerical approach was developed to assist in determining the feasibility of a proposed modified in-situ leaching method for extracting copper from sulfide porphyry deposits. This mining method requires air to be forced through cells of rubblized ore. The flow serves to supply oxygen for the leaching reactions and to dissipate heat that would other-wise build due to the exothermic reactions. The method substitutes the Carman equation into the Laplace equation. The solution of the resulting non-linear formulation is done on a finite difference grid using SOR with iteration improvement of coefficients. This procedure yields the required air flow pattern and pressure drop. An equation for advection with absorption is then solved over the same grid using explicit schemes to yield oxygen concentration. Finally, a similar technique is applied to the convective heat transfer formula to yield the temperature profile. The model is potentially applicable to such mining problems as the prediction of leakage through caved ground, the prediction of methane concentration in gobbed ground, and the prediction of heat build-up in caved workings.

The Spa1lation Process Because of the low thermal conductivity of many hard rocks, rapid heating of these rocks produces a thin surface layer in which the temperatures attain high values. Thermal expansion of this surface layer is constrained by the reminder of the still cool rock, and when stresses within the surface rock become high enough, the surface rock breaks away from the cooler rock behind it and flies or falls off as a thin flake called a spall. Then the next, newly exposed surface is heated, and the process continues. This process is the basis of spallation drilling. The hot gases from a jet burner provide the heat for spallation to occur, and their high velocity provides a scouring action that transfers heat to the rock and removes the spalls as rapidly as they form. Spallation is a process which works in very hard rock. It is dependent upon the thermal expansion coefficient and the thermal diffusivity of the rock but is also affected by any discontinuities in the rock. To date the efforts which have been made to evaluate the various rock according to their spallability has been minimal. As the success of this process is dependent upon the characteristics of rock it is expected that the study of rock mechanics will prove to be of greater value to this program than to the other mechanism for drilling and excavating rock. Commercial Uses of SPALLATION In the 19408s, the Linde Air Products Division of Union Carbide (UC 1 began developing spallation for use in mining taconite ore, which is presently the chief source of iron in the United States. In this work UC developed a jet-piercing tool that burned fuel oil with oxygen to produce spallation and contained mechanical cutters to remove rock that was not amenable to spallation. The UC jet-piercing machines have since produced about 40 million feet of shallow blast holes used for emplacing explosives in the taconite mines. During this work it was found that hole diameters could be increased by merely reducing the advance rate of the burners and that existing holes could be enlarged by making another pass through the hole with the same burner. The Browning Engineering Go. of Hanover, N.H., has developed a hand-held spallation burner to cut slots in granite. It has been used for a quarter of a century and is now standard equipment for quarrying granite throughout the world. This burner, which resembles a small jet engine oriented with its exhaust pointed downward, is the forerunner of a flame jet burner used to spall experimental holes in granite at maximum rates in excess of 100 ft/hr when operating in hard, competent granite. It uses No. 2 fuel oil, which is burned with compressed air. The system uses water to cool the burner and the exhaust gases. These gases, along with the steam produced from the cooling water, blow the spalls from the hole. Experimental Work Theoretical and experimental work has been accomplished by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Los Alamos National Laboratory. This work is reported in Refs. (3) and (4). To verify the experimental results of this work laboratory scaled down field tests were conducted using two we1 1 characterized granites from quarries in Barre, VT and Westerby, RI, under defined heating conditions. In the laboratory tests a propane - oxygen heating torch was used to direct a flame at the granite surface and the spal 1 ing process was examined at various heating rates with a high-speed video taping system operated at 200 frame per second. This produced a time-lapse sequence where the onset of the spallation process was easily distinguished. Also the heat flux from the torch to a flat surface at various stand off distances and flows was measured. Asamera Minerals Cannan Mine has been producing a 170 g gold/tonne (5 oz gold/ton) siliciaus flotation concentrate since July 1985. Flotation concentrate is shipped to a smelter for gold recovery. Numerous processes have been investigated to economically produce bullion on site. This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant test results of a bacterial assisted oxidation of the refractory minerals. Economic comparisons with autoclaving and roasting processes are included.

"Freeport-McMoRan’s Sierrita operations has two natural gas-fired molybdenum roasters for converting molybdenum disulfide into molybdenum trioxide. When these roasters were compared to other similar units within the company during a benchmarking exercise, it showed that increased throughput from the roaster units at Sierrita was possible. A team of site metallurgists, technical experts from other sites, and engineers from the Climax Technology Center was formed to study the potential in more detail. The team investigated many parameters in the roaster, including temperature profiles, roaster chemistry profiles, rabble and drop hole patterns, and operational strategies. The results of these studies and the associated throughput improvements are described in this paper. INTRODUCTION Molybdenum, a vital component for the steel industry, is typically found in nature as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). MoS2 is typically recovered via flotation processes and is purified through leaching processes. While molybdenum disulfide is a commercial product, it is not the form of molybdenum that the steel industry requires. They require molybdenum in the form of molybdenum trioxide, MoO3. There are multiple ways to refine molybdenum disulfide into molybdenum trioxide. The primary method is the oxidation of molybdenum disulfide in a multiple hearth roaster. The chemistry of converting molybdenum disulfide to molybdenum trioxide is very favorable at increased temperatures, oxidizing the molybdenum through a range of exothermic reactions to ultimately produce MoO3. The chemical reactions that occur in molydenum roasting occur in three zones. These three zones correspond with four different reactions."

An alternative way to the normal practice of precipitation of jarosite, goethite, or hematite for removal of iron from zinc sulphate process liquors/ is to employ the techniques of solvent extraction. The process presented avoids the addition of any external alkali for the extraction of iron by integrating the leaching and solvent extraction steps in a hydrometallurgical zinc plant. By starting the leaching of zinc from the solid zinc calcine material with an organic solution of an acid liquid cation exchanger, the organic phase is loaded with the organic zinc salt from the direct reaction with zinc oxide. The residue from the organic leaching is transferred to a hot acid leach circuit where the remaining zinc oxide and the zinc ferrites will dissolve form¬ing an aqueous sulphate solution of zinc and iron. In the subsequent solvent extraction of iron from this aqueous leach solution, iron is exchanged with zinc from the organic phase. The commercial carboxylic acid Versatic 10 (Shell) is highly efficient for this integrated process of leaching and solvent extraction. The resulting iron-loaded organic phase is heated to 150-200 C in the presence of water whereby the iron will be directly precipitated from the organic phase as iron oxide of high purity and the regenerated organic acid is recycled to the organic leaching step for reloading with zinc.

In 1986, Gold Fields began negotiations with a large Nevada electrical power utility to supply power for its Chimney Creek mine in northern Nevada. After the long negotiations reached an impasse over various costs associated with the power line, a decision was made by Gold Fields to generate its own power. Self-generation is not uncommon overseas, but it is rare for any but very large or very small operations in the United States. Surprisingly, under certain conditions a mine can generate its own power profitably, and Gold Fields has found that the associated operating and maintenance problems are minimal. The following report details what factors went into this decision and how it works. Hopefully, it can serve as a guideline for those who may find themselves in a similar position. History In the spring of 1986, Davy McKee Corp. was contracted by Gold Fields Mining Corp. to provide design engineering and construction management for the chimney Creek Mine. Chimney Creek is located about 50 mi northeast of Winnemucca, NV in a remote part of Humboldt County. The nearest industry using utility power was the Pinson Mine, about 13 mi from the proposed plant site. The existing electric line was not capable of carrying another mine the size of Chimney Creek, which required 29 million kwh per year. There were three options available to Gold Fields for the power supply: 1 )Power could be supplied by the public utility from a coal-fired plant about 30 mi away by constructing a new line to the mine,

INTRODUCTION Shotcrete can be defined as spray-applied concrete with a maximum size aggregate in excess of 9.5 mm (0.375 in.). The concept evolved from guniting, which uses smaller aggregate and generally produces concrete with poorer physical properties. The larger aggregate used in shotcrete requires less water in the mix, while offering larger bonding surfaces, thus imparting greater tensile and compressive strengths. TYPES OF MACHINES Two basic designs of shotcrete machines in general use are the wet or prehydrated zero slump and low slump type, and the dry or nozzle hydrated machines. Fig. 1 shows a typical zero-slump machine in a con¬figuration commonly used for small-volume require¬ments. The prehydrated zero-slump machine mixes exactly proportioned batches in a sealed pressurized chamber. "Slugs" of hydrated shotcrete mix and com¬pressed air are sent through a distribution hose to the nozzle where the wet mix emerges as a spray. The spray is directed onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. The low-slump machine is similar, except that a thick slurry mix of aggregate is delivered throughout the distribution hose to the nozzle. Fig. 2 shows a typical low-slump shotcrete machine used in moderate-volume applications. The nozzle-hydrated shotcrete machine accepts a premixed "dry" (4 to 6% moisture) batch of aggregate and cement. A constant feed of this mix is directed by compressed air through the distribution hose to the nozzle. At the nozzle, water for hydration is introduced into the emerging spray. The hydrated mixture is di¬rected onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. Fig. 3 shows a typical dry-mix machine. The major difference between the two basic machine designs is the consistency of the shotcrete quality. Pre¬hydrated machines have high degrees of consistency and produce high-strength concrete, resulting from their ability to produce exact mixtures of zero or low-slump concrete within the machine. Nozzle-hydrated machines tend to produce poorer quality concrete because of the difficulty in controlling the water content at the nozzle. Water input essentially is an art. A brief review of the current state of the art manufacturing technology will be presented and some parameters related to the material used in the drag and conical type pick cutters and their impact on their life and performance will be explained In addition, the selection procedures for choosing the right bit for excavation of a particular geological formation will be reviewed A set of guidelines will be provided for initial selection of the tools for various machines and rock formations. The methods for estimation of the tool life in various materials and the influencing parameters along with limitations of the rock cutting tools will be discussed as well.

Steven Tubbs From mine to farm is a long journey for Florida's phosphate, but it is an important one to the American farmer who uses phosphate fertilizers to replenish the soil and produce the crops which eventually wind up on the American dinner table. In this phosphate-food connection, transportation plays a vital life-giving role, a role that is unique because of the large quantities of phosphate produced and the mineral's location in relation to its markets. Florida Leads World Florida is the world's largest phosphate producer, supplying 80% of the nation's and a third of the world's annual total. About 95% of Florida's phosphate goes into agricultural chemicals, with 90% going into fertilizers. Phosphate production is primarily concentrated in west central Florida, with the exception of mining and processing in north Florida by Occidental Chemical Co. The phosphate rock is beneficiated at the mine sites and then is transported out of Florida in a raw state, or to one of the industry's 18 chemical complexes where it is processed further. In 1981, Florida produced more than 42 Mt (46 million st) of phosphate rock-a 1% decrease from 1980. The industry also produced more than 12 Mt (13 million st) of phosphate chemical products in 1981 and transported them to both domestic and foreign customers. This year, the state's phosphate production and shipments are substantially lower than recent annual levels because of a depressed worldwide phosphate market. With production down slightly in 1981, shipments declined and company inventories increased dramatically. Phosphate-related shipments through the port of Tampa alone fell 20%. As a result, in 1982, phosphate operations cut production to reduce inventories. According to the Fertilizer Institute, during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1982, phosphate rock production fell 18%; phosphate rock shipments, 28%; finished fertilizer production, 30%; finished fertilizer shipments, 25%; and phosphate rock exports declined by 20%. Despite depressed conditions, Florida phosphate production and shipments are expected to increase in the near future with more rock being processed into fertilizer products. Phosphate is one of Florida's major industries. The US Bureau of Mines estimates it contributed $3 billion to the state's economy in 1981 and an additional $1.4 billion to the US economy. INTRODUCTION Uranium mill tailings, by-products from the mining and milling of uranium oxide contain all decay products of uranium-238, uranium-235 and all the Th-232. The ore containing all daughter products of the parents U-238, U-235 and Th-232 is ground to approximately 50% under 200 mesh particle size and after extraction of uranium, the residue, described as tailings, is discharged into natural depressions confined by dams. These deposition sites are referred to as tailings ponds. Tailings ponds are located in two mining districts, Bancroft and Elliot Lake in the Province of Ontario, Canada. Some parts of tailings ponds are dry up to a depth of several meters, whereas other parts have a water table very close to the surface and still others are covered with water. The extent to which the daughters of uranium isotopes are in equilibrium with the parents U-238 and U-235 is dependent on the age of the deposit in which uranium occurs and the extent to which the decay products are removed by geochemical processes. In the mining district of Bancroft, the deposit is known to be approximately 1 billion years old, whereas in Elliot Lake, the deposit is considered to be approximately 2 billion years old. The ratio of radiogenic lead isotopes Pb-206 and Pb-207, can provide some estimates concerning the age of the deposits. If the tailings are not affected by geochemical processes, the tailings would contain all the daughters of the 4n+2 and 4n+3 series in equilibrium concentrations. The equilibrium activities of some members of the 4n+2 series are calculated in Table 1. [ ] The amount of radiogenic stable lead isotopes depends on the age of the ore deposits. If the deposit in each district is of the same age, a definite relationship is expected with respect to the activity of Pb-210 and the radiogenic stable isotopes. Approximately 33 million tons of the tailings have been deposited in the early 1960's, approximately 20 years ago. During this period of storage, the segregation of uranium daughters, like radium, the diffusion of gaseous product, Rn-222, and removal of precursors by geochemical processes, can cause dis-equilibrium. Earlier work concerned with the uptake of Ra-226 and Pb-210 by plants (Kalin and Sharma, 1981), indicated that the concentrations of Pb-210,in samples of the tailings taken, were lower than the expected equilibrium. The diffusion of radon from a variety of matrices has been studied (Tanner, 1964). It has been shown that the diffusion coefficient is dependent on the particle size in which its precursor is present, the moisture content and the surface conditions. The direct measurement of radon concentrations in the environment near the ponds is dependent on the metereological conditions. Kramer, Schroeder and Evans, 1964, have examined the variations in the concentration of radon near the ground level with respect to atmospheric variables, such as changes in barometric pressure, precipitation, wind velocities, thermal atmospheric instability. It is difficult to relate the total release of radon from the ponds to the atmosphere over an extended period. Our measurements of Pb-210 and total lead on tailings samples taken from 16 sites indicate that the ratios of the activity of Pb-210 to the mass of total lead can provide parameters which are helpful in the estimation of the total amount of radon and its decay products diffusing from the tailings ponds. In this paper, we present the results of measurements of activities of Ra-226, Pb-210 and total lead in samples from various ponds situated in both mining districts. The measurements were confined to samples taken at 0-25 cm depth from the surface.

Core Laboratories, a division of Western Atlas International, maintains laboratories in all energy-producing areas of the United States, as well as in many foreign countries. Central to laboratory operations has been the incorporation of computers and computer software. Core has developed a mu1tiuser Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) , which is currently installed in numerous company sites in the U.S., and is now undergoing installation in Canada. In addition, Core has provided custom soft ware to contract laboratories which Core operates on behalf of mining firms. The software development was done under the direction of the author in Denver, Colorado, and Casper, Wyoming. The intent of this paper is to pass some of the practical experience gained by our efforts on to those who wish to utilize computers more fully in the laboratory setting. The product of analytical laboratories is numbers. Nothing else comes from our work. We deal in information about samples. It is then reasonable to assume that the computer would be central to a laboratory operation. The hard part is to initially define what kind of computer the lab operation needs. The choices today can be very complex, and almost every hardware salesman is full of bad advice. Even the people in your own information services department may hold divided opinions. Since the advent of the personal computer, we have lived with a polarized data processing community. The PC boys consider their machines equal to any challenge, while the "save the mainframe" crowd view the PCs as limited toys that are only good for the things that clutter up a real computer. Management tends to lean toward whatever costs the least.

We have developed first a conveyor belt for transporting large lumps, i.e. Rock Belt successfully, in June 1976. The First Rock Belt had been delivered to Myodani site of Kobe City Developing Board in Japan, and its' successful operation has attract keen interests in customers from over the world as well as Japan. However, this First Rock Belt was removed in arch '81, viewing it has satisfactory expired its service life of about five-year, and also original location of this belt become to be far from the site due to long-years earth collecting work. The Bureau of Mines evaluated the integrity of escapeways in a three entry underground coal mine. A center conveyor belt entry (secondary escapeway), was flanked by an intake (primary escapeway) and a return entry. Diesel equipment was used throughout the mine for material and personnel haulage. A carbon monoxide monitoring system, tied to a data recording computer on the surface, was deployed throughout the belt entry and at selected sites in the intake and return entries. Previously, the company had a fire of unknown origin in another mine, which prompted an interest in the performance of their escapeways. An initial, qua1itative evaluation was performed by burning approximately 14 kg of coal at the mouth of the intake entry. The first test was followed by a similar burn at the mouth of the belt entry. These initial trials showed a high quantity of leakage between entries. In several follow-up evaluations, simulated fires, using a tracer gas, were set in the intake and belt entries. Tracer gas concentrations were obtained in all entries at four different underground locations. The results of these tests showed that permanent stoppings could not guarantee isolated, contaminant-free escapeways.

Beginning in late 1985 and continuing through 1987, US Bureau of Mines personnel investigated longwall chain pillar and entry design in two and three-entry gateroad systems at a deep underground coal mine in central Utah. To evaluate their respective stability characteristics, four chain pillars and two longwall panels within the two separate entry systems were instrumented with Bureau hydraulic borehole pressure cells to continuously monitor vertical and horizontal pillar and panel stresses through adjacent panel retreat. In addition, supplemental entry closure information was obtained from sites located in the vicinity of the instrumented pillars. The findings presented in this report demonstrate the practicality of evaluating mine pillar stability using in situ methods and support three significant conclusions regarding ground control aspects of the investigated two-entry system: (1) Total areal entry loading was considerably less for the two-entry system, as opposed to the three-entry system, (2) a smaller percentage of opened ground in the two-entry system contributed to a marked reduction in rooffalls, and (3) lower areal loading in the two-entry system suggests improved ground conditions when mining the underlying seam.

A 3.3 m (11 feet) diameter, 51 m (168 feet) deep temporary steel casing which had been sunk within glacial soils buckled and collapsed on July 29, 1985. The collapse occurred at the CT-8 Dropshaft site in Milwaukee while two workmen were contact grouting outside the casing in an attempt to stop groundwater inflows through a bottom plug. This paper describes the soil and groundwater conditions at the site, the casing design, the method of shaft construction, and probable causes of the buckling failure. Specific aspects of the paper include: slurry method of shaft excavation and casing installation, soil creep, earth pressure due to three dimensional arching, and buckling strength of a casing surrounded by slurry rather than grout and firm soil. The paper should be of interest to designers and constructors of temporary ground support systems for deep shafts.

Understanding the nature of coal surface heterogeneity is a prerequisite to accurate characterization and efficient control of coal surfaces. New techniques based on the centrifugal immersion of particles from the liquid/ vapor interface and film flotation have led to independent estimation of surface energy distributions in individual coal particles. Changes in the distribution of surface sites due to oxidation and polyacrylamide adsorption on coal are studied here using the above techniques. New information on -possible conformations of adsorbed polymers is also obtained.
