The question of automation of concentrator operations with computer control is under increasing consideration. Some of the problems involved will be discussed from the viewpoint of the availability of the requisite, detailed knowledge of the unit operations. The justification for full-scale automation of a mill must ultimately be economic--an increase in profitability over and above the cost of instrumentation and development, Potential savings would be in three probable directions: decrease in operating labor costs by substitution of machine control; improved metallurgy through continuous effective control; and decreased operating costs by achieving higher unit capacities and process efficiencies.

The present trend toward concentration of mining activities into fewer sections of a coal mine and application of automation and remote control technologies favor utilization of the longwall mining method. Longwall mining also offers the potential for improving safety and productivity, better ground control and higher levels of recovery. The production potential of a longwall operation is determined by the interaction of several factors including the rate of face advance, the thickness of extraction, the speed of cutting and hauling equipment, the physical dimensions of a longwall panel, and the reliability and availability of the equipment. Some of these factors are dictated by the environment in which the extraction process is to be undertaken. Some other factors, however, can be manipulated in order to optimize the production of the system. The objective of this paper is to develop a stochastic model to simulate the production operations in longwall mining. The activities and parameters that affect the production potential of the longwall operations and the relationships between the activities are identified. An attempt is made to verify these relationships through the use of existing data. The model is then used as a computer simulator to investigate the effects of various activities and parameters on the production capacity of a panel.

INTRODUCTION FMC's Paradise Peak mine, located 13 Ian (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became opera¬tional in April of 1986 (Figure 1). It was designed and built by Davy McKee, who was instrumental in equipment design and selection. It is the 7th largest gold deposit in the United States with defined reserves of 10.9 mt (12 million st) containing 34 million gms (1.1 million tr oz) of recoverable gold and 933 million gms (30 million tr oz) of recoverable silver. The mine extracts ore by the open-pit method, taking advantage of a 1.5:1 stripping ratio. The mill operates at a 3600 mt/day (4000 st/d) capacity. Crushing is done in three stages to achieve an ore size of minus 0.635 cm (0.25 inches). Grinding further reduces the ore to 85% minus 100 mesh. The ground ore is treated with cyanide in agitated leach tanks and then washed in the counter-current decantation (OCD) thickeners. Zinc is added to the clarified, deaerated pregnant solution to precipitate the precious metals. The precipitate is acid digested to eliminate excess zinc, filtered and retorted to drive off contained mercury. The retorted precipitate is then fluxed, melted and poured through cascade molds. Dore bars are cleaned for shipment and the slag is sent to an in-house slag treatment system. ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The dry electrostatic slag treatment system at Paradise Peak is the first installation of its kind. Electrostatic separation has been widely used in mineral processing since the early 1950's. A brief discussion of the theory behind the process is helpful to those not familiar to electrostatic separation. Charging and sepa¬rating slags, dry minerals or other materials by ion bombardment is the most common form of electrostatic separation. Millions of tonnes of minerals are processed each year by this method. In an ion bombardment separation, granular material is fed onto a grounded metal cylinder (or roll) and charged by a corona-producing electrode placed above the roll's surface (Figure 2). While both conductors and non¬conductors become charged, only the conductor is able to lose its charge. The charged non¬conductor, as it rests on the roll's surface, "sees" an oppositely charged image of itself in the metal surface. It is attracted to the image charge, becomes electrostatically pinned to, and moves with the roll's surface. The conductive particle also sees an image and is attracted to it. But upon touching the roll's surface, it discharges rapidly to the grounded surface and is thrown free from the roll's surface with a projectile motion. In the case of precious metal slags, the con¬ductive particles would be metallic prills of dore metal; and the nonconductive particles would be the slag, free of metal. Middling grains, generally, are in the form of a metallic prill encased in or incompletely liberated from slag. LABORATORY TESTING A number of precious metal slag samples have been tested in the laboratory. It has been found that the composition of slags vary widely from one refinery operation to another. Typical laboratory procedure is to crush and size the slag followed by two-stage lab-scale electro¬static separation. The conductor fractions from the first and second pass are then combined as a prill concentrate; middlings fraction and clean slag tailings from the second pass are held separate. Selected results from laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. It is important to note in Table 1 that the assays represent overall silver and gold, not metallic values. From experience, the laboratory results are typically lower in grade and recovery than the industrial installations. This is largely due to the hydroscopic nature of precious metal slags coupled with the high local humidity in Carpco's Jacksonville, Florida, location. Early in the 60's the author served as Chairman of the Engineering Foundation's Coordinating Committee on Air Pollution Research. One of our objectives was the development of a study on the measurement of stack emissions. Three publications of the Foundation resulted from these efforts to focus attention on the stack sampling problem.1,2,3 Two of these were annotated bibliographies covering 197 references. The third reported the results of a workshop meeting at which some 21 individuals from research institutes, industry and government discussed the possible and probable areas of research that would add to or increase the ease, precision and utility of sampling gaseous and particulate matter emitted from stacks. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has had in its Power Test Codes a Standard Code for Determining the Dust Concentration in a Gas stream4 since 1941, The American Industrial Hygiene Association has published, in its Air Pollution Manual,5 a Section on Stack Sampling. Industry and regulatory agency requirements for stack sampling have utilized some modification of the alternatives in methodology. The Tower Mill has proven to be a grinding machine with a demonstrated application flexibility. Variations in applications have proven to be numerous. This mill was originally intended for fine grinding applications. Subsequent testwork and installations have demonstrated the mill can be utilized in place of ball mills as secondary mills. The following lists a few of the circuits tested: 1. Tower Mill secondary receiving feed from a primary SAG mill grinding stage. 2. Tower Mill as tertiary grind unit following a rod mill/ball mill. 3. Tower Mill as secondary grind unit following a primary ball mill. 4. Tower Mill as a limeslaker. 5. Tower Mill grinding as a primary unit taking limestone crusher discharge. Applications demonstrate the mill is energy efficient and is sensitive to the following consideration: 1. Circuit chosen. 2. Top size of feed. 3. Product size required. 4. Classification equipment performance. 5. Media size required. 6. Media type required.

The San Miguel Mine is owned by San Miguel Electrical Cooperative, Inc. and operated by Atascosa Mining Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc. This multiseam, single-zone lignite surface mine is located near Jourdanton, Texas, 110 kilometers (68 miles) south of San Antonio. Lignite extracted from four closely-spaced seams is used to fuel the 400-MW San Miguel Power Plant. Recovery depths range from 7 to 37 meters (25 to 120 feet). The mine began stripping operations in the spring of 1980 and now produces approximately 2.5 million tonnes (2.8 million tons) of lignite annually. Atascosa Mining Company is responsible for production, maintenance, engineering, and management services. Production responsibilities include topsoil removal, overburden removal, lignite mining, spoil pile regrading and topsoil replacement, as well as ash disposal and construction and maintenance of water retention and diversion facilities.

Ladies and Gentlemen: As we begin these three crowded days of technical and economic discussion of problems faced by mining and metallurgical engineers, it seems appropriate at this Keynote Session to consider the future of this industry from which we derive our livelihood, It is also appropriate at this international meeting to view our industry on a world-wide basis. First, let us assess the world's future needs for minerals - the needs which it is our industry's task to meet. Next, let us look at what supplies of minerals may be available to meet those needs. I will speak of this first in terms of the physical availabilities of minerals. Finally, we can consider some of the social or institutional factors which will condition the world's mining industry as it goes about its task of discovering, developing, producing, and delivering the minerals needed to meet the world's demands. Let me give you a foretaste of my conclusions. First, future world demands upon our industry will be enormous, eclipsing anything that we have known up to this point. Second, there is strong evidence that our earth's crust contains a sufficient physical quantity and variety of minerals to meet forthcoming needs for as long a period ahead as one can envisage.

It is generally accepted that sulfur exists in coal in three forms: (1) pyritic, (2) organic, and (3) sulfate sulfur. Sulfate sulfur usually makes up less than 1% of the total sulfur content. Pyritic and organic sulfur, make up almost all of the total sulfur and occur in varying amounts in different coals and can vary greatly in coal of the same seam Pyritic sulfurs of 20% to 80% of the total sulfur have been reported Other authors have shown that it is not possible to remove the organic sulfur without chemically altering the coal. Chapman and Jones (1) state: "Organic sulfur, unlike pyritic sulfur does not exist as discrete particles, but is intimately associated with the coal structure, and as such it is not possible to remove it or reduce its concentration by physical means." Any success in removing sulfur has come about by removing pyritic sulfur by physical means; therefore, removal of sulfur in the pyritic form is the subject of this investigation. The extent to which any impurities can be removed from a particular coal can be determined by a washability study. Outside of crushing coal, to finer sizes or chemically altering the coal, there are no known methods of changing this inherent washability characteristic. The efficiency of various methods used to remove impurities can be determined by comparison of results produced at a yield to the results as shown by a washability study. In recent years heavy media processes have proven their ability to wash plus 28 mesh coal and nearly produce results shown to be theoretically possible by the washability study. Therefore, it is the objective of this paper to show various methods of treating the finer fractions of the coal, in the hope of developing a process, which can effectively produce in the fine fractions the efficiency of heavy media devices in the coarse.

Before getting into the subject of packaging and materials management, please permit me to introduce you to MICRO SWITCH. MICRO SWITCH, A Division of Honeywell Inc. is located in Freeport, Illinois. We manufacture and market thousands of types of precision snap-action electrical switches. Most of them are used as components by other manufacturers in industrial and commercial products. MICRO SWITCH also offers a broad line of industrial control devices including heavy- duty limit switches, relays, manual controls and proximity switches. Other product lines are solid state keyboards for the computer industry and high-performance d.c. motors used in computer related equipment. So you can see that we are a component manufacturer. With the exception of the keyboards, every one of our products would "fit comfortably into a breadbox." Some are so tiny that one could easily fit several thousand into a man's hat. In my position as supervisor-packaging. package design, and materials handling engineering, I am actively involved in package design projects, parts handling design projects, and numerous activities involving departmental layouts, storage facilities, and material handling equipment. Two package design technicians, a materials handling engineer, and a materials handling technician make up the technical staff.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is investigating methods for recovering tungsten from domestic resources. A calcine-quench-leach (CQL) technique was developed for the extraction of tungsten from the Golconda, Nevada, hot springs ores. The deposit contains disseminated tungsten, which cannot be beneficiated by conventional techniques and must be treated by hydrometallurgical methods. The CQL procedure consists of calcining the ore at 900° C for 3 hr, quenching in a solution containing 1.5 parts of NazCO3 and 1.5 parts of NaOH per part of WO3 in the ore and at a solution- to-ore ratio of 3 to 1, leaching at 200° C and at 250 psig for 3 hr, and filtering and washing the residue. A series of closed-circuit batch tests showed that 92 pct of the tungsten was extracted from a sample containing 2.32 pct WO3. The pregnant solution contained 11 q of W03/1.

High-energy product permanent-magnet materials of rare-earth cobalt alloys are being used in applications where space or weight are at a premium cost. New applications like friction-free bearings are also made possible. However, such magnet materials have not been commercially used in magnetic separators until now due to the high cost for the overall magnetic flux generation relative to commonly used ceramic magnets or AlNiCo magnets. The design of the new high-intensity permanent- magnet roll separator (PERMROLL) takes advantage of the unique properties of rare-earth cobalt magnets rather than just substituting for conventional magnet materials now in use for magnetic separators. Hence, the new generation of high-intensity magnetic-roll separators has some unusual characteristics that make known magnetic separation applications more economically attractive, and even expands the magnetic separation technology area to include applications for which no other feasible methods are presently known.

"In this review, the sintering process is first described and analyzed to identify the key factors affecting the structure and quality of iron ore sinter. Under fixed sintering conditions, the granulation efficiency, nucleus stability and primary sinter melt volume and properties of the iron ore are considered to have significant influence on the sinter structure and quality. Discussion is then focused on the effects of the chemical, physical and mineralogical characteristics of the iron ore on these key factors, and the consequences for sinter quality.IntroductionSintering is the most economic and widely used agglomeration process to prepare iron ore fines for blastfurnace use. In modern blast furnaces, particularly in East Asia, iron ore sinter typically constitutes more than 70% of blast-furnace ferrous feed. High sinter quality and efficient sinter production are thus required both to withstand extreme operating conditions and maintain the productivity of modern blast furnaces. At the same time, due to the increasing depletion of high-grade iron ore resources from large deposits, iron ore producers are moving toward developing an increasing number of deposits of much smaller sizes to maintain current production levels. It is therefore imperative for iron ore producers to develop long-term strategies to maintain the quality and consistency of the iron ore fines they are producing while exploiting these smaller, complex deposits. The iron grade, gangue minerals present, overall mineralogy as well as physical characteristics of iron ore fines being mined from these different deposits vary considerably. Overall, ores now have highly complex mineralogy, are becoming more porous and friable, and contain increasing amounts of gangue minerals, which will have important implications for the sintering process and sinter quality.Blending is one of the most effective options being explored by iron ore producers to deal with multiple small complex deposits. This allows the iron ore producers to reduce the number of products and take full advantage of the unique characteristics of each individual deposit to achieve long-term product consistency while increasing production. Blending is also a common practice in sinter plants as it is almost impossible to produce from one single ore a high-performance sinter mixture with the required processing characteristics. A typical sinter mixture used in Japanese steel mills (Nakano and Okazaki, 2007; Matsumura et al., 2013) often contains five or more ores to achieve balanced sinter quality and productivity with relatively low cost of raw materials."

The results of a study are presented in which gaseous oxygen was dissolved in the leach liquor at concentrations of the order of 300 parts per million. This oxygen-containing solution was injected into portions of a field being operated on a commercial basis with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. Comparative results indicate that were concentrations and production rates were essentially equivalent with these two oxidants.

Previous production at Spektakel was undertaken during the periods 1854 - 1888 and 1892 - 1901. During this period a total of 41,7 kt of ore grading 32% Cu was hand-sorted from 270 kt to 360 kt of ore mined. Initial open-pit mining was followed by underground mining, access being by means of an inclined shaft to the 85 fathom level. During the period 1946 - 1952 cement copper equivalent to 5,452 kt of blister was produced by leaching of oxidized ore. The Spektakel ore-body branches and coalesces both in plan and in cross-section which accounts for its remarkably complex configuration. Constituent rock-types are andesenite and various varieties of biotite diorite and of ?norite? (biotite-hypersthene diorite). Closely related spatially, and possibly genetically, but predating the above-mentioned basic rocks are bodies of biotite-bearing monzoritic rocks, locally termed shonkinita.

Marco Polo reported that the Chinese used "black rocks" for fuel, and recent studies indicate that the Chinese may have used coal in small amounts for two or three millennia previously. The use of coal as a major source of energy however, did not begin until about the twelfth century, when the inhabitants of the northeast coast of England discovered that certain black rocks found along the seashore--and thereafter known as "sea soles" would burn. Since this initial discovery, coal has been mined continuously, first in England and shortly thereafter in present Belgium, France, and Western Germany, and finally in all coal-bearing areas of the world, in ever increasing amounts. The production of coal in the United States began about 1820, when 14 tons were reportedly mined. Since that time the production of coal increased steadily until about 1907, after which the rate has fluctuated between the extremes of about 400 and 700 million tons per year. Bituminous coal and lignite production was 590 million tons in 1974. Value of production was $8. 9 billion. Anthracite production was b.3 million tons with a value of $157.5 million.

On the job injuries to the musculoskeletal system are probably the oldest of the industrial safety problems. Long before we had pinchpoints to guard, chemical vapors to ventilate, and noise to enclose, people were getting strains, sprains, and sore backs from their work activities. In spite of the age of the problem, it remains a long way from being solved. The past ten years have seen a significant commitment by the sci¬entific community to understanding the problem. Engineers, scientists, doctors, and epidemi¬ologists have been involved, and as a result, today we have a much better understanding of the problem. The first step in understanding a problem such as this is to explore its history and epidemiology. The research done by Chaffin (1977), Snook (1970), Ayoub (1978), the ILO (1962), and others, led NIOSH to publish its Work Practices Guide for Manual Lifting in 1981. The guide was based on research carried out in general industry, but subsequent research by Stobbe (1983) and Peters (1983) has suggested that the nature of the problems producing injuries in underground mining is the same as in general industry. The problems are more intense in the mining environment.

Middle Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) coals of certain areas of the Illinois and Forest City Basins contain epigenetic sphalerite and associated minerals in veins, clastic dikes, cleat, and other small-scale structural features. The presence of sphalerite in these coals records information about the geology of coals and coal basins, and represents a potential source for zinc as a byproduct of coal production. Origin of Sphalerite in Coal The origin of sphalerite in coal suggested by Cobb (1) involves sphalerite precipitation from zinc-bearing ?Na-Ca-Cl brines upon contact with sources of sulfur in the coal bed, e.g., pyrite, H2S, and organic sulfur. These brines were essentially at the temperature of the host coals as determined by fluid-inclusion thermometry and vitrinite-reflectance studies. The migration of these brines into coal beds may have been caused by compaction of sediments due to continued sediment loading of the coal basins. Zones of high permeability such as sandstones and the coals themselves presumably acted as conduits for the movement of the brines. The open spaces where sphalerite was deposited resulted from minor deformation associated with differential compaction and cleat formation enhanced by volume shrinkage during coalification.

In late 1965 General Mills announced the availability of a new liquid ion exchange reagent, LIX®-64, for the recovery of copper from various solutions, such as dump leach liquors. Acceptance of this material by the copper industry has been gratifying. A number of pilot plants have been operated, and at this writing there are four commercial plants either in operation or under construction. The properties and operating characteristics of this reagent have been described in previous papers.1,2 LIX-64 is quite effective and selective for copper extractions although partially limited in pH ranges, losing extraction efficiency as the acidity of the feed solution increases to below pH 1.0. Also, the LIX-64 content in the kerosine carrier was limited to about 10 volume percent (except for special cases) because of rapidly decreasing phase disengagement rates above this content. This in turn led to large plant capital costs, as the organic flow rates had to be in- creased (rather than LIX-64 content) to extract the copper from high content liquors. This was true in all circuits where the feed copper content ran above 2.0 g/l copper. A reagent was needed which would extract copper from more acidic liquors (or higher copper content liquors) and which exhibited improved phase disengagement characteristics with reagent contents up to 30 volume percent. General Mills is pleased to announce the availability in commercial quantities of a new and improved reagent, L+-64~. This reagent broadens the pH range in which copper can be extracted, and exhibits superior phase disengagement characteristics. The improvement in the reagent has been noted in laboratory circuits, as well as pilot plant runs and commercial operations.

Within ten to fifteen years, coal-fired power generating stations will be producing over 40 million tons of coal-ash annually in the United States. The largest part of this ash will be emitted from the boilers, entrained in the off-gas stream and trapped as flyash. However, about 15 percent (six million tons) will he removed from furnace bottoms as bottom ash or molten coal-ash slag. In current practice, the molten coal-ash slap is generally water quenched and then transported either as a slurry or in granular form to storage or disposal areas. Although a small amount of this slag is marketed as abrasive grit or as roofing granules, most of it is considered a waste material which must be disposed of at considerable cost to the power companies and therefore to the public. The accom¬panying economic loss in terms of unused raw materials and displaced land is not as obvious but is just as real. The Coal Research Bureau at West Virginia University under the sponsorship of the U. S. Bureau of Mines has been examining the possible utilization of both coal-ash slag and flyash in the mineral wool industry as a method of partially alleviating the growing national problem of solid waste disposal. The potential marketing situation for mineral wool manufactured from coal-ash is illustrated in Figure 1. This bar graph depicts the growth in value of mineral wool shipments1 from 1949 through 1966. In this 17-year period, the value in¬creased by over 350 percent, more than 20 percent per year, despite a decrease in unit cost of mineral wool. It therefore appears likely that coal-ash could find a steady market as a supplement to existing sources of raw materials for mineral wool production.
