CONTAC Engineers is a Chilean based company which works on process control and automation, principally for the minning industry. Jointly with other local and international engineering firms, CONTAC has participated in most of the last expansion and modernization plans being carried out at the Chilean pinning industry. At presente, CONTAC is involved on a research and development plan for the design and implementation of new instrument and process control procedures for mineral process automation. One of these efforts is the design of an ore size analyzer for coarse ore being transported over a conveyor belt. A feasibility and prototype study was made at a SAG Mill Plant and currently a high resolution, high speed analyzer is being developed. It will became available on early 1986.

As part of an effort to provide basic data on the fundamental scientific and engineering principles of minerals beneficiation, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the flocculation of mineral fines. This paper presents results of studies using crosslinked starches containing carboxyl, diethanolamine, iminodiacetic acid, and xanthate groups to flocculate hematite, goethite, chromite, manganrte, pyrolusite, cuprite, and cassiterite fines. The carboxyl and xanthate derivatives flocculated all minerals except cassiterite; the latter was flocculated by only the diethanolamine derivative. The iminodiacetic acid derivative flocculated hematite, goethite, chromite, cuprite, and pryolusite fines. Zeta potential measurements were made to help define the reaction mechanism responsible for flocculation. These measurements indicate that electrostatic attraction probably is not involved, except possibly in the case of the diethano lamine derivative. The separation of hematite from quartz by selective flocculation with chelating cross- linked starches under two pH conditions and with two dispersing agents is described. Best recoveries and grades were found when either the carboxyl or xanthate derivatives was added at the natural pH of the pulp in the absence of a dupersing agent.

A regional investigation to find large supplies of potable ground water was carried out at elevations exceeding 12,000 feet above sea level on the Bolivian Altiplano. The program marked the first application of modern ground water search and development technology in the region, and ended a history of unsuccessful exploration efforts to locate important supplies of fresh water from underground sources. Oruro, a population center of 90,000 inhabitants, and its primary supporting industry - mining, both derived major direct benefit from the results of this program.

The procedure to arrive at an energy efficient autogenous grinding plant is carried out in the following steps: First Step - Determine power requirements to grind a particular ore. This work carried out on small samples ground in a 450 mm diameter Aerofall Hill and the results are checked against a standard Bond Index test. Second Step - A bulk sample from the ore zone is ground in a 1.8 m diameter pilot mill. This work is carried on until the power objectives as indicated from the first step have been realized. Third Step - Correlate the pilot mill data, with the data from the numerous samples ground in the small 450 mm mill and arrive at design criteria for the commercial plant. Ensure commercial mill design will be suitable to obtain similar results as those obtained in the pilot mill.

How representative are partial-panel screen tests of the in situ response of screen to roof and rib deterioration and displacements? Can a more representative procedure that tests up to two full screen panels improve the utilization and effectiveness of screen as a roof and rib support? This paper details a new full-panel screen test procedure and the initial results. The full-panel test frame was designed to test a 2.4 by 3.6-meter screened area with bolt spacing as small as 0.3-meter increments. The initial design included up to 6 screen pull points, but additional locations can be added to produce a more uniform loading. The test frame was developed to capitalize on the capabilities of the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The initial tests included a baseline test of a partial panel (1.22 by 1.22-m screen section) using the original 1.52 by 1.52-meter test frame, a 1.22 by 1.22-meter screen section test in the new full-panel test frame, and two tests of 2.4 by 3.6-meter screened area in the full-panel test frame. The 1.22 by 1.22-meter screen section tests in the full-panel test frame produced a peak load 6% higher and a yield load 30% lower than the partial-panel (original) test frame. The multiple pull points of the full-panel frame produced variable yield, peak, and intermediate loads, but on average were lower than the single pull-point tests. INTRODUCTION Roof and rib surface support has become a major component of the stability and safety of underground coal openings in the past 15 years. The use of screen, either metal or synthetic, has proven to decrease the injuries of underground coal miners. By 2005, there were 466 injuries in the United States caused by roof skin failures, with numerous mines not employing roof screen. In contrast, in 2015 there were 175 injuries caused by roof skin failures, with at least some of the reduction due to the increased use of roof screen. A continued effort to increase the utilization of screen in areas of underground coal mines where workers are traveling and working can reduce these injuries even further. To aid in this effort, the testing of various screen types under various loading and attachment conditions is required. Past testing efforts have primarily consisted of partial-panel testing in a laboratory setting. Laboratory testing of roof screen, both metal and composite, has been conducted in several ways by researchers, manufacturers, and other entities. The primary focus on the testing has been evaluating weld integrity of 1.22 by 1.22-meter screen section tests of various screen types utilized in mining (Dolinar, 2006; Dolinar, 2009; Tannant, 2001). There have also been several efforts at numerical simulation of the screen and screen/rock interactions (Murali et al., 2006; Shan et al., 2014). A few full-panel tests were performed with one pull or loading point in the center of the screen panel (Shan et al., 2014). As most previous efforts have mentioned, the only true way to evaluate the capabilities of screen is to conduct full-panel testing. Single wire strand, weld, and partial-panel (1.22 x 1.22-m) tests as well as numerical modeling only provide insight into the actual response of full-panel screen. A new test frame and procedure have been developed at PMRD to conduct various loading, anchoring, and material testing.

This report summarizes the results of preliminary investigations concerning the influence of block caving mining upon adjacent mine openings and discusses possible methods for reducing critical rock pressures and damage to these openings. These investigations are one part of a general study of the rock mechanics of block caving by the Denver Mining Research Center of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The purpose of this part of the study Is to obtain an estimate of the stress concentrations around mine openings adjacent to block caving stopes for use in developing better designed openings and improving mining methods. When mine openings such as slusher drifts, grizzly drifts, and haulage drifts are damaged by rock pressures induced by block caving mining, the mining cost increases, mine production decreases, and ore recovery may be consider- ably lessened. Methods of mining that result in lower rock pressures and methods of design that enable mine openings to withstand these pressures are desirable. The development of these methods, in turn, requires a fuller understanding of the following: The stres concentrations around the mine openings and the changes in stress induced by adjacent mining; the physical properties, such as the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of the rock surrounding the openings; and the support supplied by the concrete lining, timber sets, or other types of supports used in the openings.

Barbaro et al. (1990) implemented a tedious study aimed at delineating the short-scale spatial variability of sulfur in a coal seam. It is not possible, however, to extend their conclusions to any other coal seam or use theirs in any other fashion, because the background geology was not presented. Nor were the conclusions accompanied by geological interpretations in the paper. In addition, an unfortunate printing error occurred where the total sulfur (determined by High Temperature Combustion) variogram in Fig.3 was duplicated in Fig. 2 instead of the seam height variogram. A more serious error, however, has been committed in the definition of the variable, seam height. What is defined as seam height by Barbaro et al. (1990) is, in essence, mining height, and is not a regionalized variable that should be studied by geostatistical methods directly. Despite the fact that the variable, seam height, is not defined in the paper explicitly, the following quotation discloses the fallacy: "All roof rock that exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft) from the floor was not taken because the longwall was operated to not mine more than 1.8 m (6 ft) unless the coal seam height exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft)." From this definition, the seam height, and therefore the sampling height, is equal to the actual coal thickness, if the coal thickness is greater than 1.8 m (6 ft). Otherwise, it is equal to the sum of the coal thickness plus the thickness of the roof rock that complements the thickness to 1.8 m (6 ft). In the latter case, the seam height is constant and equal to 1.8 m (6 ft). It is possible to conduct a variogram study on a pool of samples that are realizations of two different variables. But the conclusions derived would not belong to any one of the two variables uniquely and, therefore, do not possess any significance. Geostatistical analysis is irrelevant for the sum of multiple regionalized variables formed by arbitrary selections. In a two¬seam setting, for example, the mining height, as defined by the thickness of one seam at one location and the thickness of both seams at another location (due to quality and/or minimum thickness considerations perhaps), should not be used in the calculation of one common variogram. The two seams should be modeled separately. They can then be combined according to the specific purposes of the study. On the other hand, if a constant is added to a regionalized variable (to incorporate dilution perhaps), the variogram of the new variable will not change. Barbaro et al.( 1990), surprisingly, does not give any geologi¬cal interpretation of their results despite the fact that most of them can be explained by the origins of sulfur in a coal seam. The presentation of the results of a geostatistical study with no reference to the geology of the deposit is uninformative. It may also be misleading for the potential users of geostatistics. It is not unusual to find nuggets of pyrite in coal seams. In such cases, pyritic sulfur will probably display a spatial structure for only a very small distance that will appear in the experimen-

The Robinson Mining District near Ely, Nevada, is one of the major porphyry copper districts in the world. Within the district is an east-trending zone of altered porphyry, metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, and sulphide mineralization surrounded by Paleozoic limestone, dolomite, shale and sandstone, Tertiary volcanics, and Quaternary alluvium. Six major disseminated ore deposits have been exploited in this eight-mile zone. About 20% of the district production has come from disseminated ore in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks found adjacent to altered quartz-monzonite porphyry. The following brief statements summarize the inter-relationship of porphyry, alteration, metamorphism, and mineralization: 1. Disseminated copper ore does not occur in unaltered porphyry or in unmetamorphosed sedimentary rocks 2. Sedimentary rocks have been only weakly metamorphosed where intruded, by unaltered porphyry. 3. Intensely metamorphosed sedimentary rocks are found only adjacent to, altered porphyry. 4. Many hydrothermal minerals are common to both altered porphyry and adjacent metamorphosed sediments. 5. Disseminated ore is found in altered porphyry and adjacent meta¬morphosed sedimentary rocks. 6. In general, there is a direct correlation between grade of ore in porphyry and copper content in the adjacent rocks. 7. Although chlorine oxidation has been found to be effective in destroying the CN ion, an excess of chlorine is needed to drive the reaction to completion. This often results in the formation of residual chloramines, which are toxic to aquatic life and often regulated by various states. The interhalogen, bromine chloride (BrCl), has been found to be just as effective but without the formation of persistent, residual chloramines. The hydrolysis and subsequent disproportionation of the highly-polar BrCl molecule essentially yields a solution of hypobromous acid (HOBr) and nonoxidizing hydrochloric acid (HC1). Studies have been carried out to directly compare the mechanism of CN destruction with chlorine and bromine chloride.

INTRODUCTION Shrinkage stope mining can be employed in steeply dipping veins where both the wall and the vein material are sufficiently strong to stand with only minimal ground support. Shrinkage stope mining takes advantage of the swell in volume produced in breaking in-place ore. This expanded volume of ore is allowed to occupy part of the mined-out vein, and in so doing provides ground sup¬port and a working surface for the miners. Only enough of the ore is drawn after each stoping cut to allow work¬ing room. Not until the entire mining block has been broken is the full amount of broken ore drawn from the stope. DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES FOR SHRINKAGE STOPING The vein is developed into stoping blocks, each of which is 76 to 91 m (250 to 300 ft) in length and 61 m (200 ft) between levels. Level development, described later, is either on the vein or parallel to it with crosscuts periodically driven over to the vein. There are usually two exits from each stope. The first entry is a raise at one end driven either conventionally by raise climber, or by a raised borehole. Present practice is that this raise, put in from level to level, is either a 2.1- x 2.1-m (7- x 7-ft) Alimak raise or a 1.2- to 1.8-m (4- to 6-ft) diam borehole. Either raise system will require pro¬visions for an ore chute carried with the stope to the haulage level or the scram drift. At 9- to 12-m (30- to 40-ft) vertical intervals, dogholes are developed from the raise so that when stoping breaks back into these dogholes, timber or steel sets and necessary service facilities can be installed. The second entry to the stope may be either a similar raise at the stope endline, or more economically, a cribbed raise carried with the stope. As previously stated, development of the ore block is achieved by either drifting on the vein or by paralleling the vein with a footwall lateral and then crosscutting over to the vein at specified intervals. In the following discussion, three basic cases are illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. In Fig. 1, development is in the footwall by a 3- x 3-m (10- x 10-ft) trackless lateral. A heading is also driven on the ore and taken either full width or driven a standard size and slabbed to the vein width. Approxi¬mately 9-m (30-ft) long crosscuts on 7.6-m (25-ft) cen¬ters are driven from the lateral to the vein. For ease in muck handling they are usually put in on a slant rather than at right angles. A single orepass, located off the lateral and in the center of one stope block, can serve not only that stope, but also one on either side, up to a tramming distance of not more than 137 m (450 ft). Raises are put at the stope endlines on 91-m (300-ft) centers. The back of the vein is shot down and just enough broken material is drawn off to permit access for men to work off the broken ore. Development in Fig. 2 progresses by driving a 3- x 3-m (10- x 10-ft) trackless heading on the footwall side of the vein. The ore block is delineated by raises on 91-m (300-ft) centers. Crosscuts are again driven on 7.6-m (25-ft) centers over to the vein. Approximately four rounds are then taken up to the vein and each round is successively belled out so that all the crosscuts (pockets, in this case) connect. It is hypothesized that the Hotelling Valuation Principle (HVP) can determine the value of developed gold reserves using simple methods and easily obtained data. This paper reports the results of an empirical test of this hypothesis. Using publicly available data from North American gold companies, we obtained data for V, R, p, and c and ran a simple linear regression using equation (1.1) as the definition of the dependent and explanatory variables. By examining the value of the coefficients of the resulting regression equation, we can draw conclusion as to whether or not the HVP can be confident1y used as an estimator of the value of developed gold reserves.

Simulation of coal preparation circuits is becoming a widely practiced technique used for the design of coal preparation plants. On a much more limited basis, simulators are finding application in off-line process control. A typical application in the latter category involves inputting projected coal washability data for a shift into the simulator and using the software to optimize product quality and recovery within a range of predefined specifications. The plant is then operated at SG?s of separation determined from the simulation exercise for the one shift time period. This procedure is useful in that it incorporates some form of advanced planning into preparation plant operations. There is an attempt made to reflect changes in feed coal quality on a shift by shift basis rather than continually running the plant near design specifications with changes in SG?s of separation being made in response to an inadequate sampling program which only provides a spot measurement of material that has already passed through the plant. Instead of instituting changes on a shift by shift basis, NHI has proposed a method whereby monitoring three major operating parameters, * Feedrate to jig * Flowrate from hydrocyclone overflow * Density from cyclone overflow the ongoing plant operating performance can be accurately predicted on a continual basis, i.e., updated hourly. Using a distribution curve to predict the split between the clean coal and refuse from a given separator does not account for variations in efficiency that occur as a result of variations in operating parameters. NHI and Arch have studied the effect of both jig loading and solids content in the recirculating load to the jig on product quality. As a result, relatively simple measurements can be made on-line in a preparation plant which will provide input data to the simulation program that enables the prediction of jig/hydrocyclone circuit performance on a real time basis.

Highly delaminated muscovite mica products (WG-1 and WG-2) have been developed by J.M. Huber Corp. The micas are characterized as a 325-mesh product having high brightness and very narrow particle size distribution. At 40% loading in polypropylene, WG-1 mica provides substantial improvement in tensile modulus and equal tensile strength to unfilled polymer; in high-density poly- ethylene (HDPE), WG-1 provides four times the tensile modulus and a 50% increase in tensile strength over unfilled polymer. Surface modification of the water-ground mica (SM ™) provides substantial improvement in tensile strength over untreated mica at greater than 20% loading in polypropylene; in HDPE, tensile strength is twice that of unfilled polymer.

Much has been written and many discussions held on the virtues (and evils?) of a Company-owned motor fleet. Almost invariably these dialogues take a generalized form and thereby lose something since the individual circumstances, geography and philosophy - particularly in diverse industries, is never quite the same. In considering the nature of my remarks today, I felt a departure from the general approach might be in order, and in lieu of that, will attempt to present a concise picture of how we in the Lehigh Portland Cement Company view this problem and the steps we have taken in our efforts to solve it. At the outset a word may be in order about the Lehigh Company itself, what we do, and the problems that confront us specifically as well as the cement industry at large. We are primarily a manufacturer of portland cement operating 10 plants with a total annual capacity of about 23,000,000 barrels. We market this material in 30 states, shipping both from the plants directly as well as through a system of 18 distribution terminals. About 150,000 truckloads of cement are shipped to customers each year.

The centrifuge which will be reviewed in this dis¬cussion is the continuous solid bowl typo. As there are presently approximately 2000 of these units operating in our country, and about 200 of these in use in the coal industry, I expect that most of you are acquainted with its operating principle. How¬ever, for those who are not familiar with the machine a brief introduction is in order. The continuous solid bowl centrifuge was first successfully marketed, worldwide by the Bird machine Company in 1934. The successful development of this unit was based primarily on the invention of a drive mechanism to properly control the differential speed between the two rotating elements. This centrifuge was introduced into the coal industry immediately following the second World War. Today there are five or six additional firms' selling this machine in our country, and approximately twenty others in Europe, England and Japan.

Arizona is a sun-belt growth-region where 13 tons of industrial (nonmetallic) minerals is being produced annually per capita. In 19B5, non-fuel mineral production reached $1.532 billion and consisted of metallic ($1.277 billion-84%) and nonmetallic ($253.5 million-16%) earth materials. Sand-and-gravel value was second only to copper. over 90% of the value of nonmetallics is represented by combined sand, gravel, cement, and lime. The remaining less than 10% ($25 million) was attributed mainly to stone, specific volcanic products (cinder, perlite, pumice), gypsum, clays, salt, zeolite, and others. Current interest in industrial-mineral development in Arizona is high, especially in the geologically complex Basin and Range region.

The petroleum refining industry makes extensive use of catalysts for the conversion of crude oils into more usable products such as gasoline, fuel oil and gas, aromatics, and others. Catalysts used for hydraprocessing contain cobalt-molybdenum or nickel -molybdenum, although there are catalysts that also contain tungsten. During hydroprocessing, nickel and vanadium are deposited on the catalysts, eventually rendering them inactive. The refiners are then confronted with the problem of disposing the spent catalysts. In the past, landfilling was a common method of disposal and it is still practiced in some countries. Other refiners prefer to stockpile the spent catalysts at the refineries until the price of metals warrants their sale to metal reclaimers. This practice, however, poses environmental problems to the refineries for storage and disposal of spent catalysts. Other types of catalysts are amenable to regeneration. The purpose of this paper is to focus attention on the recovery of nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium, and alumina from spent hydroprocessing catalysts by Gulf Chemical and Metallurgical Corporation and to review the use of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate for pressure leaching of spent catalysts.

The US economy grew steadily in 1989, reaching an annual rate of $5.3 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion=1012 ). The value of domestically processed, mineral-based materials rose 5% to $315 billion (US billion=109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 14% to $11.6 billion, while industrial minerals rose 2% to $20.2 billion. Recycled scrap was valued at $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were $2.31 and $3.56/kg ($1.05 and $1.62 per lb) for copper, $1.58 and $2.57/kg (72 and $1.17 per lb) for aluminum, 77 and 97 cents/kg (35 cents and 44 cents per lb) for lead, and $1.58 and $2.09/kg (72 cents and 95 cents per lb) for zinc. Many mining and metal companies reported reasonable profits. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. 250 million US citizens already possess 172 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 4% to 6.8 million units, while truck and bus production fell 1 % to four million units. New housing starts fell 9% to 1.4 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. Imports of crude and refined petroleum costing $50 billion exceeded domestic crude oil production. President Bush expressed "strong concerns about this country becoming further dependent on foreign oil." And the Department of Energy held a series of hearings around the country to develop ideas for a "national energy strategy."

Natural zeolites are gaining recognition as an important commodity with an increasing number of industrial and consumer applications. This potential has prompted the Anaconda Minerals Company and other firms to investigate occurrences and markets for zeolites. The deposits of mordenite-rich tuff at Rome are of interest for their economic potential and for the excellent opportunity they provide to study a zeolite deposit formed in a hydrologically closed basin. Location The Rome property is located approximately 9 km west of Rome, Oregon, in Townships 31S. and 32S., Range 41E., Malheur County. It lies within the Owyhee Uplands of the northern Basin and Range physiographic province (Figure 1). The area discussed here includes a major portion of the depositional basin in which the zeolitic tuffs occur.
