It is common practice when thermally drying coal from wet coal preparation facilities that the coarse +0.5mm fractions and fine fractions (-0.5mm) are combined and fed to a thermal dryer. There are very good reasons for this concept. The coal feed is much easier to handle in this condition for it is not as likely to stick inside the dryer or hang up in the material handling equipment, and is easier to feed and discharge. However, it is generally only the -0.5mm fines that really need to be dried. The +9.5m fraction of the cleaned coal will leave the dewatering screens, or drain and rinse screens, at an acceptable surface moisture, probably 5 or 5 ½ percent. The 9.5m x 0.5mm mesh fraction can be centrifuged to about 8 percent. The -0.5m fines can range from 18 to 22 percent or more, depending upon the type of equipment employed to dewater, and upon the size distribution within this size range.

Geochemical characteristics, shapes and surface textures of manganese nodules from two blocks located in the southern (9°N~11°N) (KR5) and northern parts (16°N~17°N) (KR2) of the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone between 130°W and 133°W were investigated in terms of sediment distribution and metal contents for better understanding of controlling factors of seabed manganese nodule genesis. Two blocks, ~700 km away, are dominated by the nodules with different origins, each of which has distinctive chemical compositions and shapes. KR2 block is dominated by irregular and poly-type nodules of hydrogenetic origin with low Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and high Fe and Co contents, while KR5 block is dominated by discoidal and ellipsoidal nodules of diagenetic origin with high Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and low Fe and Co contents. In addition, nodules from two blocks show different surface textures: smooth and transitional in KR2 and dimorphic and rough in KR5. Sediment distribution is also distinctly different in two blocks. The study area consists of three sediment types: Unit 1 ? dark brown mud with an intermediate metal content, Unit 2 - yellowish brown mud with poor metal content, and Unit 3 ? black metalliferous mud. KR2 is characterized by the thick occurrences (<250 cm) of Unit 1 at the surface while Unit 1 distributes thin (<12 cm) in KR5. Higher primary production rate in the southern block proximal to equator and resulting high supply rate of metals to the sediment might be the cause for the dominance of diagenetic nodules in the southern block, but potential controls of different sediment distribution on the nodule genesis can not be excluded. If it is the case, Unit 1 with an intermediate metal content likely has been acting as a sink for metals by precipitating micro-nodules within the sediment column. Within the KR5, the hydrogenetic nodules occur preferentially on the seabed where Unit 3 distributes at shallower depth (<50 cm). Unit 3 has 2 or 3 times higher metal contents than other types of sediments. It might play the same role as Unit 1 in the northern block that prevents the supply of metals to the sediment surface. According to the "Survey of Energy Resources 1980" (1)*, which was prepared by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Raw Materials in Hannover (FRG)for the World Energy Conference 1980 in Munich, the world coal deposits are assessed at 775 billion tce proven reserves 448 billion tce of them recoverable and 6 161 billion tce additional resources. If one ignores growth rates, the current world coal output of 2,8 billion tpy gives our recoverable reserves a static life expectancy of 175 years. With an average increase in world output of 3,2 % like between 1973 and 1980 this range would be further shortened to an alarming degree. Furthermore, the criteria used to distinguish between workable and unworkable resources give rise to the suspicion that deposit characteristics are not always taken into account to a sufficient degree. For example, little attention is paid to major ?Bonitaet" - factors such as dip and seam thickness. There have been wide-ranging scientific discussions on the lower limit for workable coal resources, but no such limits have been set at the other end of the scale. Otherwise it is well known that performance and costs are badly affected den in level and moderately inclined seams the seam thickness is more than 4 to 5 m, because special mining methods have to be used beyond this limit. These are associated with significantly higher costs than with the winning of seams of ?normal? thickness.

Requirements for full extraction in underground coal mining call for inexpensive, safe, techniques to be competitive with conventional methods. Longwall and shortwall systems are to some extent employed for this purpose. Another method would be rib pillar extraction (and pillar extraction). These methods are compared with each other with respect to procedure, equipment, safety, roof control, investment, output, performance, costs The advantages of r.p.e. show this method very attractive. Number and cost of equipment are lowest. Safety and roof control becomes improved by a mobile roof support recently developed in Austria. Its successful use in the R.S.A. is being explained.

The Jewett Mine is located in two East Central Texas Counties, Leon County and Freestone County. The area is primarily suited for agriculture with approximately 90% of its agricultural income coming from beef cattle and hogs. In addition to livestock both of these counties produce hay, oats for grazing, pecans and corn. There are 1,101 farms and/or ranches in Freestone County consisting of 381,248 acres. Less than 15% of this acreage is harvested croplands. Leon County has 1,227 farms and/or ranches for a total of 442,387 acres, of which less than 13% is harvested cropland. Total annual agricultural sales for Leon County are approximately $36 million and Freestone County has approximately $21 million. Ninety percent of the annual agricultural sales derive from livestock.

This paper presents an overview of -- the carbon-in-pulp process for gold and silver recovery as seen in the early 1980&apos;s. Traced back to its origins in the mid-nineteenth century the process development through the present state-of-the art is described. The process technology and equipment design are described in detail for the carbon-in-pulp process. A typical process flowsheet is given with a description of appropriate design criteria. Technical advantages and disadvantages as compared to the traditional countercurrent decantation process are discussed including some illustrative comparisons of capital and operating costs. A summary of currently operating carbon-in- pulp plants throughout the world is given with an insight into future developments in this industry.

The Mt Todd Gold Project is located 300km to the south of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. The identified resource comprises 46 million tonnes at 1. 65g/t using a 1. 0g/t cut-off ( 50 million short tonnes at 0.05oz/st). The resource is open to the north and at depth. Mineralisation comprises easterly dipping sheeted quartz/sulphide veins, typically 10 to 20 millimetres in thickness, hosted by hornsfelled greywackes. The majority of the ore body is primary ore with only 10% classified as oxide ore. Early testwork showed that the ore was not suitable for heap leaching, giving only 50% recovery at a -3mm crush size. Acceptable recoveries were obtained at a P80 of 75 micron. However, the ore is extremely hard.

The Inco process can be retrofitted into a typical heap operation with minimum capital. Capital cost for a mid to large size heap would be less than 1 cent/ton. Operating costs are typically in the order of 8 cents/ton. Ammonium bisulphite is the preferred reagent. Dimension stone on the other hand has been utilized by man to glorify conquests - both in the battlefield and corporate arena. Both commodities are important, but dimension stone has an additional use in that the survival lessons learned by the domestic industry can be applied to other contemporary industrial minerals, Specialization in the market place and customer service have allowed domestic producers to survive: subsidized foreign competition, obsolete equipment, and lack of capital.

Magma Copper Company, San Manuel Division, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Newmont Mining Corporation and located at San Manuel, Arizona. The ore body is a dessiminated porphry copper deposit in quartz monzonite. The primary copper mineral is chalcopyrite with minor amounts of chalcocite, bornite, and covellite. The molybdenite occurs mainly on fracture faces or else associated with quartz veinlets. Pyrite is the major sulphide mineral in gangue. The feed to the concentrator from the underground mine is approximately 0.720 percent copper and 0.029 percent molybdenite. The concentrator has a design capacity of 62,000 tons of ore daily. After a standard ore treatment circuit consisting of grinding, rougher flotation, regrinding, and cleaning, a bulk concentrate is produced which contains 27 to 29 percent copper and 1.0 to 1.2 percent molybdenite. This concentrate is pumped to the molybdenite plant feed thickener.

Because the nickel contained in lateritic nickel ores does not occur in an identifiable mineral, it is generally accepted that these ores are not amenable to beneficiation. For this reason, such ores are either directly smelted or leached to extract the nickel. In this paper, a process for enriching the nickel content of the lateritic nickel-bearing chromite overburden, normally a waste material generated during chromite mining, is described. In this flotation process, a nickel preconcentrate containing >1.1% Ni was obtained from material containing as little as 0.36% nickel. An empirical relationship was developed to predict the grade of nickel that can be obtained.

The extraction of gold from chloride solutions by ion exchange is examined. It is shown that at initial gold concentrations between 1 - 5 ppm, 20 g/l C1- and pH 5, the kinetics of loading on weak base resins are slightly slower than those observed with activated charcoal. Equilibrium loading of auric chloride varies considerably as a function of pH from one resin to another. For all of the resins studied, nearly complete gold extraction was achieved between pH 2 and pH 6.5. Sodium hypochlorite was found to exhibit a slight effect on the equilibrium loading of gold chloride.

INTRODUCTION Gaudin (1), considered that "the mechanism of mineral collection is the central problem of flotation theory". From their work on adsorption phenomena in flotation for more than fifty years (2), Gaudin and his co-workers have made major contributions to the elucidation of this mechanism, a fact acknowledged by their contemporaries in the field (e.g. (3)). Their investigations in a number of areas, e.g. demonstrating that submonolayer quantities of adsorbed collector species can induce flotation, or identifying the influence of substances which can activate or depress (1), have helped to provide the basis for and the development of a theory to account for the interaction between mineral and collector. It was established in the late fifties (4) that the presence of oxygen is a prerequisite for the flotation of metal sulfides with thiol collectors. This fact rendered inadequate the concept of simple ion adsorption being responsible for rendering these minerals hydrophobic. The requirement for oxygen has been explained (1) in terms of this species being a component in chemical reactions between the sulfide surface and the collector. Gaudin has been instrumental in identifying the products of chemical reactions at sulfide minerals (1.5), a line of work which has been continued particularly by Finkelstein and co-workers in South Africa (6). The Carlin Gold Mining Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corporation has been successfully operating an open pit gold mine and cyanide mill for approximately the past ten years. It is a unique operation in that about 20 percent of the mill feed is a carbonaceous ore refractory to cyanidation that must undergo a pretreatment stage developed for, and by, Carlin. The mine and plant are located in the Tuscarora mountain range is north-eastern Nevada near the towns of Carlin and Elko. Claims were staked at the minesite in 1961 and 1962. A drilling program was initiated late in 1962 and after drilling a total of 250,000 feet of rotary drill holes an estimated 9,300,000 tons of ore at a grade of 0.32 ounces of gold per ton was delineated.

Zinc concentrates received in La Oroya zinc refinery are marmatitic in nature, contain about 11% iron and traces of other metal values, Figure 1 shows the zinc circuit. The calcine from the roasted concentrates is leached in spent zinc electrolyte. Major part of the impurities is iron which has been oxidized to its trivalent form, This is the origin of the zinc leach residue for which the ZILERET process was developed and so named. The impure liquor from the leach is sent for purification and thence to electrolysis- zinc deposits on aluminum cathodes from which: it is stripped, melted and cast into slabs Typical assays of zinc calcine and leach residue are given in Table 1. Metal values contained in the leach residue, without counting any value of iron, amount to roughly $130 per short ton.

During the last few years the New Lead Belt of South- eastern Missouri has become the main source of lead in the United States. It also produces significant amounts of zinc, copper, and silver. The mines are located on a narrow, mineralized trend extending southward from Viburnum, Missouri for about thirty-five miles. The area is part of the Ozark uplift and consists of steep-sided, heavily wooded hills with narrow valleys. Surface streams are very erratic, normally having low flows but becoming rushing torrents during the violent thunderstorms that occasionally occur. Because of the pristine nature of the country and the newness of the mining developments, the environmental impact of all phases has been closely watched.

In Novemeber of last year I visited a mica mine in Hunan Province, China. For nine months , we had been trying to sell Chinese mica to a customer in Belgium. Talking to the customer was like negotitating with a stone wall. The buyer refused to communicate any -thing other than his steadfast refusal to consider Chinese mica. He would not advise us what he wanted, what specifications or grades. He would give no indication if our price at market, or reasonable, or totally out to lunch. He would not even accept samples. It took no genius to guess that the mica buyer had at some time in the past bought a shipment of Chinese mica and had received a disaster. I invited the mica mine in Hunan in order to see for myself what could be done - without massive investment in equipment and instruments - to upgrade the quality of the mica for export. We had seen this type of customer reaction before. One disgruntled customer who had pur¬chased pigment grade barites direct from China ranted and raved about unreliable and inconsistent quality. It did no good to explain to him that China is a big country, with hundreds of mines scattered throughout many areas, each producing a different product. Our further explanation that Chinese export organizations also varied in degree and efficiency of customer service fell on deaf ears. Samples had no effect on his perception. Eventually we showed him photoraphs of two mountains of pigment grade barites. One lot was our sales of pigment barites to a major European minerals processor. Our Chinese barites stood proudly white and beautiful next to a hill of other material which now appeared at best mediocre and dull by comparison, and which the buyer had decided to reject after he received our Chinese barites. Finally the customer was sufficiently impressed to look seriously at our guaranteed specification and the outturn analysis performed by our other customer.

Abstract. Controlled flow is an aspect often desired in mine ventilation. This is normally obtained by using fans and regulators to achieve the required pressure balance in the system. Preference for a certain network layout of these control devices is influenced by technical as well as legal and economic factors. In this study, a model is developed based on an economic criterion by which an optimum layout of fans and regulators for a controlled flow system can be determined. The concept is analo¬gous to the critical path crashing. However, a linear programming package is used to demonstrate the solution procedure for a hypothetical venti¬lation network.

More than 100,000 residents of Springfield and surrounding communities live on karst (sinkhole) terrain on the Springfield Plateau in southwestern Missouri. The city occupier much of the headwaters area of Wilson Creek basin, which is underlain by the Burlington Limestone (Mississippian), a cavernous, massively bedded formation averaging 150 feet in thickness. Sinkholes, some as deep as 75 feet, pock-mark the uplands. Stony red residual clay mantles the pinnacled limestone bedrock. Surface water lost to sinkholes and losing reaches of upstream areas resurges in springs and estevellas (reversible sinkholes) in the lower reaches of Wilson Creek. The Springfield Southwest Treatment Plant, an activated sludge process sewage treatment facility, situated about mid-basin at the confluence of Wilson Creek and a tributary, South Creek, serves the entire city. Effluent from the treatment plant together with industrial, street-wash and other waste from the-headwaters of the basin have degraded both surface and ground water quality in much of the Wilson Creek watershed. The area affected includes Wilson&apos;s Creek Battlefield National Park and recreational reaches of James River below the mouth of Wilson Creek.

PROJECT The Walgautunnel is the heart of a new hydro scheme in Western Austria, which is supposed to go into operation in 1984. With it&apos;s length of 21,4 km, a bored diameter of 6,25 m and an internal operating pressure of 13,5 bar it will be the largest water conducting tunnel in Austria. Even compared with some of the country&apos;s world-famous highway tunnels like &apos;Tauern&apos; or &apos;Arlberg&apos; it has to be regarded as a major tunneling project. Owner is the Vorarlberger Illwerke AG, a power corpo¬ration founded in 1924. In the course of the past 6o years this company developed the &apos;Werksgruppe Obere Ill - Lünersee&apos;, consisting of 6 major power plants and 4 large reservoirs. The installed capacity is 1.114 MW in the generating and 529 MW in the pumping mode. The total power output amounts to 1.916 GWh. The water for power generation comes from the glaciers of the Silvrettagroup, as this corner of the Austrian Alps between Vorarlberg , Tyrol and Switzerland is called. The Walgauwerk utilises all the water accumulated by the existing schemes as well as the so far unused run-off water, passing by in the river Ill. The intake to the Walgau-Tunnel is situated right beside the lower reservoir of the recently completed pump-storage plant &apos;Rodund II&apos; at an elevation of 64o m above sea level. Though the head is a mere 162 m, 1 billion m3 of water will generate 356 GWh per annum. The power-output of the two Francis turbines is 86 MW.
