INTRODUCTION Boom-type miners mechanize the cutting and loading of a solid face of rock having a compressive strength as high as 124 MPa (18,000 psi). These machines differ from continuous miners in that they can cut much harder rock for any given cutter-motor power. In addi¬tion, a boom miner is more flexible, selectively cutting any cross-sectional configuration from circular to square arched faces, 1.57-rad (90°) turns, and mixed faces. The basic operational concept of these machines, utilizing a rotary cutterhead mounted on a slewing boom, gained importance in Europe during the 1960s, where, due to their specialized use in roadway development in coal mines, they were called roadheaders. Along with continuous miners, boom miners share the ability to fully mechanize the cutting and loading of rock, while eliminating the need for explosives and the shattering and overbreaking of roof and rib rock that is normal with conventional mining methods. The machines are crawler-mounted and most have a gathering-arm load¬ing system that, moves the cut rock onto an internal chain conveyor, subsequently discharging the rock into a transport device such as a shuttle car or a bridge conveyor. Light- to medium-weight boom miners are cutting softer rocks and minerals successfully, including coal, shale, rock salt, potash, phosphate, weak sandstones (e.g., those associated with uranium ore), and other softer ores such as iron. Heavy third-generation ma¬chines have extended rock cutting to much harder ores such as borate, oil shale, and almost all rock associated with coal seams, except for the harder sandstones and limestones. All costs cited herein are in 1977 US dollars. TYPES OF BOOM MINERS All boom miners utilize drag bits fixed on a rotary cutterhead that is powered by an electric motor mounted in the slewing and elevating cutter boom. The cutter¬head is either a ripping or a milling type, and the machines have evolved through three generations (Boldt, 1977). As shown in Fig. 1, only one boom miner cur¬rently produced can use both ripping and milling cutter¬heads on one machine. Table 1 lists boom-miner models built in large num¬bers and/or successfully used or marketed in North America. Table I excludes machines of which only a few have been produced and none sold in North America, such as those manufactured by Demag, Eick¬hoff, Paurat, and Thyssen-Rheinstahl. The only Ameri¬can boom miners are the F-16 and Super ROC¬MINER"', manufactured by AEC, Inc., State College, PA. Machine Generations Three generations of boom miners can be distin¬guished according to their times of introduction, their rock-cutting abilities, and their weight classifications. Fig. 2 illustrates typical best-practice production rates possible from boom miners for selected cutter-motor power sizes (other power figures can be interpolated). Introduction The incentives for developing a distributed form of the comminution model include: • for describing the heterogeneous comminution behavior of multiphase mineral systems (i.e. realistic ore bodies, such as complex sulfide ores consisting of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and siliceous minerals) and •for generating, for various locked and free particles, in situ, microscopic, breakage behavior such as the mode of fracture (intergranular vs. transgranular), the relative rates of breakage and the breakage distribution. However, the computational difficulty and the effort made in estimating a large number of parameters (Andrews and Mika, 1975; Wiegel, 1976; Herbst et al., 1985, 1988) do not justify the utility of this approach. Also, obtaining the results experimentally is very tedious and time consuming if using this approach. Although recent work in this area (Choi, Adel and Yoon, 1987; Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990) showed good results for liberated particles, the quality of the estimation and prediction was poor for locked particles. Attributing this to the complex breakage behavior of locked particles, it was concluded that additional constraints, and possibly modification in the breakage distribution functional form for locked particles, were necessary. However, further mathematical analysis revealed that the method previously used was in error. The purpose of this technical note is to present the correct solution methodology used in solving the general model equations of a multicomponent mineral system containing multiple classes of locked particles. Previous work and connection The general form of the comprehensive, distributed-component comminution model has been described as (Herbst et al., 1985) [d (m (0) -[ I - B ] S_ m(t) = A m(t) (1)] where [A] is the fundamental matrix/state companion matrix, commonly referred to, in the comminution literature, as the "mill matrix." Note that for a distributed-component comminution model, this is a full, general, real matrix, unlike a lower triangular matrix for a simple grinding model or a lumped-binary grinding model with one locked-particle class (Herbst et al., 1985, 1988). Also note that all of the underlined letters refer to matrices. Herbst et al. addressed the difficulty in arriving at a closed form of the analytical solution of Eq. (1) via similarity transformation [IT J inv (T)]]. This difficulty occurs for several reasons: •[A], as a general real matrix, may have complex eigenvalues and complex eigenvectors. •More importantly, there is no guarantee that a set of eigenvectors of [A] will turn out to be independent. An attempt was made to solve this problem by implementing a decomposition method. With this technique, the mill matrix was decomposed into a sum of lower and upper triangular matrices [(i.e., A = L + U)]. Then the solution was obtained using similarity transformation (Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990). The rate of beryllium dissolution from a low-grade ore was studied in sulfuric acid solutions. The effect of stirring speed, sulfuric acid concentration, particle size and temperature on the rate of dissolution of beryllium was established. The results of the study showed that the dissolution rate is independent of stirring speed within the range of 250-1000 rpm but depends on 1/2 power of the sulfuric acid concentration. The dissolution rate increases exponentially with decrease in particle size and the maximum attainable rate of extraction with respect to particle size is 6.6 x 10 mol dm min. The apparent activation energy (^E) for the dissolution reaction is 54.4 kJ/mol (13.0 kcal/mol). Based on this magnitude of the activation energy, it is concluded that a surface chemical reaction is the rate limiting step for the temperature range (70° -100°C) investigated.

INTRODUCTION In this section, it is assumed that the reader is an engineer with sufficient training in underground mining work, preferably with budgetary control, to understand the mining methods outlined in other sections of this handbook. The mining-method descriptions are not repeated herein; only sufficient information is provided to enable the reader to comprehend the development of the costs presented. All costs are in 1977 US dollars, except where explicitly stated otherwise. CAPITAL INVESTMENT The capital investment in the underground mining portion of any mining property includes the following: 1) The development of original access involving adits, shafts, declines, etc. It includes the necessary equipment for transporting men, materials, and rock. 2) The purchase of mine equipment including loaders, underground haulage equipment, fans, pumps, electrical distribution, surface facilities associated with the underground mine, etc. 3) Sufficient preproduction mine development to assure steadily increasing production after startup. De- pending upon the mining method used, the preproduction development should provide a supply of three months to one year of ore that is developed and is ready to be stoped. Underground development also includes excavations other than shaft stations, loading pockets, sumps, etc., which usually are associated with the means of access and are excavated by the contractor. These excavations could include a crusher cavern, an ore- storage pocket, and underground workshops that may or may not be included by the shaft-sinking contractor. Portions of these could be delayed until after production begins, but it is preferable to complete them during the development phase, so there is no interference with the production buildup. 4) The staff and labor costs for all phases from inception through final production. 5) The provision of mine-surface equipment and facilities strictly applicable to the underground portion of the operation. The required facilities include a changehouse with a lamp room, a first-aid station, compressors, an electrical substation, workshops, a ware- house, water pipelines to the concentrator, water storage tanks, explosive storage, etc. A concrete-batch plant, a sand-fill plant, and boilers for heating may be required. 6) Other direct and indirect costs. 7) Engineering, design, and procurement costs. 8) Contingency allocations. 9) Contractor's fees, startup costs, and owner's costs. Original Access As part of a study for the US Bureau of Mines, Dravo Corp. conducted an extensive literature research survey covering underground operations in the United States between 1963 and 1973. Table 1 is compiled from the section of that study pertaining to the types of access to underground mines. Table 1 does not include distances attributable to the deepening of existing shafts, nor does it include shafts bored by raise drills or downhole machines that need existing underground workings for the disposal of the cuttings. During the period under review in the report ( 1963 through 1973). concrete-lined circular vertical shafts were the predominant means of providing the first access to a new underground mine; these shafts accounted for 80% of the original access in terms of the number of accesses completed, and 75% in terms of the total verti- cal linear distances. The inside diameters of the conventional circular shafts ranged from 3.7 to 7.0 m (12 to 23 ft). Most (72% ) of these conventional shafts were for production,

Comminution is the single most expensive operation in mineral processing. It consumes about 50% of the energy required for mineral extraction (Agar, 1976). Current comminution technology is both energy-intensive and inefficient. A novel noncontact comminution process concept was developed in this study, whereby selective lib¬eration of minerals from an ore could be potentially achieved. The process involves application of electric and ultrasonic energy to liberate minerals from gangue particles. Introduction The mineral industry is a large user of energy in the US. Energy usage is increasing as the grade of ores processed decreases. It is es¬timated that comminution of ores uses about 32 000 kWh (115 trillion kJ), or 2% of the electric power produced in the US (NMAB-365, 1981). Among other minerals, ce¬ment, iron, and copper processing plants are the largest users of en¬ergy in comminution. Very little of this energy used in conventional grinding (about 1%) is used to gen¬erate new surface. The remainder is wasted (Table 1). Thus, there are substantial energy-saving and economic incentives to improve the efficiency of crushing and grinding techniques for mineral recovery. With an energy efficiency of only 1%, it would seem possible to devise methods to significantly improve comminution technology. This requires that breakage force be applied only where needed, not indiscriminately as in a conven¬tional ball mill (NMAB-365, 1981). Can apparatus and methods be de¬ veloped for large-scale commer¬cial use that allow energy to be fo¬cused at intergranular bounda¬ries? If this can be done, mono¬mineral grains would remain in¬tact and the grinding action would be selective and substantially more efficient. The novel comminution process concept described in this paper uses a combination of electric and ultrasonic energy. This energy breaks the ore and selectively lib¬erates minerals. The process has also been termed a two-stage or electroacoustical comminution process (Goldberger, Epstein, and Parekh, 1982). The mineral grain boundary is usually the weakest area in an ore. By applying electri¬cal energy to the ore, the rock frac¬tures mostly at grain boundaries. At the same time, the electric shock creates secondary hairline fractures in the ore. Additional application of ultrasonic energy to this ore provides further break¬age. The concept was proven on a molybdenum porphyry ore but needs additional study. Technical Background There have been substantial im¬provements in milling machinery and grinding operations, but rela¬tively few attempts have been made to develop alternatives to conventional impact milling. Sev¬eral methods, however, have been investigated that relate to this study. In the early 1970s there was considerable interest in a size re¬duction method known as the Snyder Process (Cavanaugh, 1972). It involved charging coarse ore into a pressure chamber, pressur¬izing with a gas, and activating a quick-opening (15 msec ) dis¬charge valve that connected the chamber to a discharge duct. This allowed solids to fluidize and ac¬celerate, subjecting the material to a variety of impulse phenomena that caused the desired size reduction. Other nonimpact means of achieving breakage and selective size reduction have been de¬scribed in technical and patent literature. Kanellopoulos and Ball (1975) considered using heat to induce thermal stress in quartz¬ite. This would cause cracking and, thus, increase grinding efficiency. The La Perla Mine, owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A., is located approximately 100 miles east of the City of Chihuahua in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. The mine began operations in 1958. Existing ore beneficiating facilities, consisting of heavy media and jig plants, upgrade the ore prior to shipment by rail to the Altos Hornos steelmaking complex in Monclova. Sizable reserves of two distinct ore types, which were not amenable to treatment in the existing beneficiating plant, or usable in the blast furnaces, have been mined and stockpiled in order to uncover the treatable ores. One of these ore types has been labeled "Diseminado" ore, and is low grade containing approximately 42% Fe with sulphurs ranging from 1 to 2%. The other ore type has been labeled "Pulverulento" ore, and is high grade containing approximately 65% Fe and 0.1% S, but at 80% minus 325 mesh, is too fine grained for efficient sintering. Late in 1968, Arthur G. McKee & Company became involved with the problem of improving the above ores for their efficient and economical use in Altos Hornos' blast furnaces. Early in 1969 representative samples of Diseminado ore were obtained for laboratory bench-scale testing at the University of Minnesota, Mineral Resources Research Center. Concentration tests incorporating magnetic roasting, wet magnetic separation, high intensity separation, high tension magnetic separation, anionic flotation of apatite, cationic flotation of silica and oleic acid flotation of iron were performed. Laboratory testing was concurrently carried on at La Perla Laboratory, which resulted in plans to construct a 10 TPD pilot plant. The pilot plant was operational in September, 1969. Analyzing laboratory results as well as pilot plant results, Altos Hornos and Arthur G. McKee & Company metallurgists agreed that the most promising flowsheet for the low grade Diseminado ores entailed wet magnetic cobbing, desliming, and oleic acid flotation of the non-magnetic fraction. Mount Isa Mine should be regarded as a large mining complex rather than one mine. This arises from the geography, variety and extent of the orebodies, the mining methods, and the use of 14 shafts for ventilation distribution. A brief resume is presented here since comprehensive descriptions of lead-zinc mining methods {11}, copper mining methods {2 }{3}, geology 241, stope fill {5} and ventilation techniques {6}{7}, have all been published in the last five years. Mining extends over a north-south strike length of 2.5 miles (4 Ian) with a maximum width across dip approaching 3 200 ft (1 Ian). Current mining is to a depth of 3 150 ft (960 m) with the ore hoisting shafts extending 660 ft (200 m) deeper. The composite longitudinal section, Figure 1, shows a representational disposition of the copper and lead-zinc-silver orebodies in the central shaft complex where the main service and hoisting shafts are located. To the south the X41 man and materials shaft provides access to the copper area. The mine layout is typical of high tonnage track- less mines, utilising a large diesel fleet, raise- borers and some large diameter hole stope drilling. Mining methods include sublevel open stoping, slot and massfire, and a trial vertical crater retreat in the copper ore, and sublevel caving, sublevel open stopes with and without rib pillar recovery, and mechanised cut and fill in the numerous lead orebodies. All ore reports to one of the three crushing systems located below 19 level in the central shaft complex. Copper ore is hauled exclusively along the 19 level computer assisted Rockflo haulage system, and lead-zinc-silver ores report via central orepasses from Granby haulages on 13 level and 15 level. Tonnages hoisted during the 1977178 financial year were 5.0 million for copper at 3.2%. and 2.3 million for lead-zinc-silver at 7.8%. 6.3% and 7.06 oz/ton (216 g/tonne) respectively.

My subject today is "Drilling-and-Blasting of Small Rock Tunnels". I am sure that there will be some people, primarily college students but perhaps Consulting Engineers, who will say: "Drilling-and-Blasting? I thought that went out with the invention of the Tunnel Boring Machine". A few years ago I talked to Dick Robbins and he told me that they did not try to sell a "Robbin's Mole" unless the tunnel was two miles long. For easy calculations I use 10,000-ft. (3km) A Mole today costs about $2 million which works out to $200 per lineal foot. This is "front money". You cannot place the order unless you are the uncontested low-bidder and then you must wait at least six months for delivery. Of course you can use that time to square up your portals, ready to turn-the-eye, or maybe you have shafts to sink to reach the tunnel grade. But this is "dead-time" and it is a heck of a feeling to have a job and cannot get started on it until you get the Mole. I do not have the American figures on lengths of tunnels but there was an article a few years ago in a British magazine: NEW CIVIL ENGINEER, on this subject. This stated that 75% of the jobs in Britain which were bid were for small tunnels, 10-ft x 10-ft (3m x 3m) or smaller, and that they were less than 5,000-ft (1.5km) in length. This does not mean that 75% of the footage in Britain was less than 10-ft in diameter. It means that 75% of the jobs being bid were less than a mile in length. From my experience in the U.S. I believe that we have substantially the same ratio: so many of the jobs with which I was associated were short, 1,000-ft, 2,000-ft and sometimes 3,000-ft and the bores

In past years, water drainage control in coal mines has been primarily directed on the basis of water quantity rather than quality. Due to the recent intense interest in total ecology and environment, emphasis has shifted to the point where the water exiting from a mining operation may be of better quality than when it enters. In most operations this has meant the use of treatment methods (neutralization) while the technology for the prevention of acid drainage is being developed or refined. To date, underground abatement of acid formation has generally been less expensive but also less effective than surface treatment of the mine water. It seems probable that total mine water pollution control will have to include both underground abatement and surface treatment methods. The general acid producing reaction involving the oxidation of pyrite - 2FeS2 (pyrite) + 702 + 2H20 ? 2Fe2S04 + 2H2SO4 - is well known, even though the individual steps are not clearly understood. The major implication of this reaction, that acid production can be eliminated by not allowing the contact of pyrite with free oxygen or water, has been well substantiated both in the laboratory (1,2) and in practice. (3) Underground abatement or control processes can be generally classified into two types: (1) the effective control or elimination of acid causing reactions within the mine, and/or (2) the reduction or prevention of water flow into and out of the mine. Recognizing the fact that these two types may be directly inter-related, this paper will, for the purposes of clarity and simplification, discuss each separately.

Synthetic indium-bearing zinc ferrite (IBZF) was mechanically activated by a tumbling mill. Subsequently, the behavior and kinetics of leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF in sulfuric acid solution were investigated. The results demonstrate that the tumbling ball milling enhances the leaching reactivity of IBZF and increases the zinc and indium extractions. The reaction temperature and H2SO4 concentration have an important effect on leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF. The kinetic model -ln(1-x) = kt was used to describe the kinetics of leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF and to calculate the kinetic parameters. The tumbling ball milling causes a decrease in activation energy and reaction order, which indicates that the dissolution of IBZF after mechanical activation by a tumbling mill becomes less sensitive to temperature and H2SO4 concentration. For the zinc leaching, the activation energy decreases from 73.9 to 70.3 kJ/mol and the reaction order decreases from 0.72 to 0.70. For indium leaching, the activation energy decreases from 78.1 to 73.5 kJ/mol and the reaction order decreases from 0.82 to 0.69. It is found that the dissolution rates of the initial IBZF and activated IBZF are controlled by surface chemical reactions.

INTRODUCTION The Cyprus Pima Mine is located 20 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona and about fifty miles north of the Mexican border. The Cyprus Pima orebody was discovered in 1950. Feasibility studies were begun in 1952 employing underground development. Economic studies showed open pit operations to be feasible and stripping of overburden was begun in late 1955. The first ore was reached in October of 1956. A 3,000 tpd (tons per day) concentrator was completed and began operation January 1, 1957. From these beginnings, Cyprus Pima Mining Company has expanded into a plant processing approximately 54,000 to 56,000 tpd. Four expansions were required to bring the plant up to its present capacity. Each expansion incorporated what had been learned in previous operation of the plant. The first expansion was completed in August of 1963 doubling design capacity to 6,000 tpd. In reality, because of softer than average ore, capacity was closer to 8,000 tpd. Expansion I1 was completed in July 1966 bringing design capacity to 18,000 tpd. Expansion I11 followed immediately. Completed in the summer of 1967, this expansion increased the design capacity to 30,000 tpd. The actual dry tonnage of this portion of the operation in 1974 averaged 38,400 tpd, again, primarily as the result of treating softer than average ore. The latest expansion (Expansion IV), completed in December 1971 and utilizing a semi-autogenous grinding circuit, is located in a separate building (Mill 11) approximately 200 yards southeast of the original mill (Mill I). Expansion IV was designed for 14,000 tpd, but after circuit modifications, averaged 16,500 tpd in 1974.

It is four years since the seminal study of demand for rapid excavation by the National Academies of Sciences (NAS) and Engineering outlined this technology's opportunities, requirements and significance to the challenges of urbanization and natural resource conservation. The demand study was quite simple. Opportunities were valued at market while requirements to produce new technologies were valued at cost. The significance of new technology in economic terms was measured by the net discounted gains to users over time. The Academy view in 1968 was that these gains, even most modestly estimated, appeared large enough to justify the bill for research proposed by that Committee (1). In 1970 the question of demands became international in what is recognized as the first international experiment in technological policy analysis, terminating in the Advisory Conference on Tunneling of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)(2). A monumental demand survey formed the basis for its economic assessment. The twenty-two OECD nations also made an impressive attempt to measure the magnitude of existing research and development efforts. In their recommendations periodical statistical demand forecasting and collection of demand data (Recommendation 1) was given central importance for public planning (Recommendation 2), the financing of public construction (Recommendation 3) and the encouragement of technological advance (Recommendation 4). Their program for international cooperation led to OECD's establishment of a Directorate for Environmental Affairs, and influenced the organization of the World Environmental Conference meetings now held in Stockholm under United Nations auspices. INTRODUCTION The first phase of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project consists of 7.1 km (4.4 miles) of subway and stations running through downtown Los Angeles from Union Station to MacArthur Park. Contract A171, the Wilshire/Alvarado Line, involves tunnel construction beneath 7th/Street from the 7th/Flower Station to the Wilshire/Alvarado Station. The project consists of the excavation and lininig of 3000 m (9900 ft) of twin-bore, 6.7 m (22 ft) excavated diameter, 5.5 m (18 ft) finished diameter subway tunnels. The location of the project is shown in Figure 1. The majority of the excavation passed through weak siltstone/ claystone bedrock; although, portions of each tunnel approaching the 7th/Flower Station passed through fine-grained alluvium. Both tunnels were excavated with a digger shield. The project also included the excavation and lining of 6 cross passages, 2 communication rooms and a sump, all at tunnel grade between the two bores. A program of geotechnical instrumentation and building monitoring was performed to detect and document the response of the ground and adjacent structures and facilities to tunnel excavation. The instrumentation program was also intended to provide information that would permit implementation of remedial measures, when and as required, to prevent damage to structures, facilities and utilities along the tunnel alignment. Precious gold and silver markets support substantial activity in the search for and development of improved and unconventional ore and tailing processing methods. The need for such methods 1s strengthened by consideration of increasingly low grade and refractory ores and old tailing reserves. As background for this review of new and unconventional precious metal processing, recent USBM data (1981) show annual world gold production of about 40.8 million troy ounces. In the U.S. about half the 2.8 million ounce consumption was used for jewelry and the arts, 39 percent for industry, and 8 percent for dental purposes. World silver production in 1981 was about 365 million ounces. Domestic usage the same year was about 117 million ounces. More than $ was used for photography and 30 percent for electrical and electronics. By process, about 1 percent of U.S. production of gold came from amalgamation, 66 percent from cyanidation, 31 percent from smelting ores and concentrates, and 2 percent from placers. As for silver, about 11 percent is from cyanidation and 89 percent from smelting ores and concentrates. Evidently the search for innovative and unconventional precious metal processes must include gravity concentration, froth flotation, hydrometallurgical, and electrometallurgical methods. Although smelting processes are equally important, they largely comprise nonferrous metal technology, and are not discussed here.

Sewage presently being discharged into the Tijuana River Valley pollutes the valley as well as the beaches in the South Bay of San Diego, making the beaches unusable nearly year round. The SBTO will convey flows down a 8.5 m (28 ft.) by 58 m (190 ft.) deep drop shaft, through a 3.35 m (11 ft.) by 5.8 km (3.6 mile) long tunnel, and up a 46 m by 2.7 m (150 ft. by 9 ft.) riser shaft connecting to a 1.5 km (0.95 mile) of seafloor pipeline and 1.2 km (0.76 mile) of diffusers on the ocean floor. The drop shaft will be sunk through 38 m (125 ft.) of saturated sands and gravels and 20 m (65 ft.) into the dense fine sands of the San Diego Formation. The tunnel liner has been designed as a five piece, single pass, gasketed, bolted, reinforced concrete liner designed to withstand an external head of 76 m (250 ft.) of water and internal operating head of up to 27 m (89 ft.) and to accommodate movement at the numerous fault crossings. The tunnel is contemplated to be driven with a state-of-the-art Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM) or slurry shield machine through a wide range of conditions from clay to gravel with boulders.

The Nonel Primadet is a non-electric blasting initiation device. The system incorporates the safety advantages of a cap and fuse system with the precision blasting afforded by electrical blasting caps. Each unit is made up of a delay blasting cap factory-crimped to a Nonel® shock tube lead line. The delay elements in the blasting caps are manufactured in both millisecond and long period series. There are 16 periods available in both series - period 0 through period 15. The units are manufactured in 12', 16', and 20' lead lengths. The hollow shock tube is made of surlyn plastic and it is coated on the inside with a reactive material. The powder train has a density of only 1/10 grain per linear foot of tube. A typical blast round is timed precisely the same way it would be with electrical caps. After the round has been timed and loaded, the tube leads are gathered in convenient bunches and tied into a detonating cord trunkline. The Nonel® tube bunches are initiated by the output of an 18 grain per foot detonating cord trunkline. Once initiated, the Nonel® shock tube will reliably propagate at 1800 meters per second. The energy from this shock front initiates the delay elements in each delay cap. The shock tube is inert to electrical energies, including; stray current from AC/DC power sources, as well as, electrostatic discharges. The tube is also inert to initiation by impact. The system has proven to be particularly advantageous in both tunnel and shaft blasting applications. The major advantages in using the Nonel® system in this type of work are: 1) faster and easier tie-in techniques through the use of bunch-blasting. 2) electrical power can be left on during loading and tying-in. a. electrical lights can be turned on at the working face - better lighting facilitates loading and tying-in. b. electrical pumps can continue to function throughout loading and priming procedures (this is particularly advantageous in shaft work with water problems). 3) down-time due to approaching electrical storms is minimized. 4) increased overall efficiency in the blasting cycle: a. it is easier to train a man in the proper use of the system. b. fewer missed holes per round. c. less time required for tie-in. 5) safety-advantage--The system is not susceptible to involuntary initiation from extraneous electrical energies.

The Mineral Resources Institute at The University of Alabama is engaged in a program whose objective is to develop a beneficiation system for Eastern oil shales. Prior experience (1,2) at The University had shown that the grind required for liberation of the oil rich kerogen was substantially below 20~m. Based on this fact and the rapidly emerging consensus that column flotation is the preferred method for ultrafine particle separation, efforts were focused on the column flotation of oil shale. This paper, which must be regarded as a progress report on a continuing MRI project, describes the observations made and the results achieved to date. The investigation is being conducted in two phases. The first phase has been completed and consisted of a factorially designed experiment conducted for the purpose of screening a set of primary flotation variables. The second phase, which is still in progress, is focused on optimization of the operating conditions and development of a flowsheet for specific shales.

Thickeners are simply large tanks, usually circular in shape, which are designed to allow settling of solids and to operate with continuous overflow of clear water and underflow of thick pulp. The dimensions of the thickener are usually such that dewatering of very fine pulps may be accomplished while still 1 overflowing clear water. Some thickeners such as the Genter, Hardinge and Hydrotator types combine thickening with filtering2 while others such as the Dorr type are pure thickenersl,2,3. A schematic diagram of the traction type Dorr thickener is shown in Figure 1. This type is appropriate for tanks over 15 m (50 ft) in diameter. This tank employs a rotating raking mechanism which moves the settled material toward the central discharge. For this and other thickeners, it is common to have a shallow conical tank bottom in order to conform to the geometry of the raking mechanism, and it is often desirable to elevate the tank for ease of access to the product. When the tank does not rest on the ground, the forces resisted by the cone are large, and thick plates must be employed. The fabrication of these tanks requires temporary supports in order to erect the cone. A flat-bottomed tank could also be used because the settled material would soon form a hardened conical surface. However, because of the presence of large bending forces, even larger plate thicknesses are required than for the conical bottom. Significant cost savings often can be realized by the use of a scalloped-bottomed tank such as the one partially shown in Figure 2. The particular scalloped bottom discussed in this paper (and shown in the Figure) employs radial beams forming the outline of the cone-shaped bottom. These beams are supported directly by columns. Cone segments are hung between adjacent beams. The exact geometry of these segments depends upon the cone angle and radius, the number of radial beams, and their inclination. The geometry is chosen to satisfy certain clearance restraints and to utilize the material as efficiently as possible. INTRODUCTION An evaluation of the radiological health risks from uranium mining and milling requires the determination of several key parameters. As shown in Figure 1, the first step is the estimation of the radioactive source term. The radionuclides in the ore consist of the 238U decay series nuclides shown in Figure 2, the 235U series nuclides, and 40K. The 238U decay series isotopes dominate the source term, with the 235U series isotopes causing less concern and 40K remaining at background levels. [ ] Specifically, the risks from uranium mining and milling are mainly associated with 230Th, 226Ra, 222Rn, and its short-lived daughters. These radioisotopes are mainly alpha-particle emitters; hence, some dispersion mechanism is necessary to bring them into intimate contact with man so that they can be inhaled or ingested For water pathways, the leaching of the isotopes from [ ] the solid ore or tailings provides a measure of the amount of contaminant initially available to the environment. For the air pathway, dust-creation mechanisms such as blasting, crushing or general resuspension processes dominate for 226Ra and 230Th. However, 222Rn, being a chemically inert gas generated from the decay of 226Ra, can migrate through the ore, overburden and tailings over considerable distances. As shown in Figure 1, the next step in the pathway to man is environmental dilution and delay. For the water transport mechanism, the delay in the isotopes reaching an accessible water supply may be considerable (several thousand years or more), but for airborne nuclides the dispersion in the atmosphere is rapid and constitutes the main mitigating factor. Considerable ventilation is provided in underground mines to dilute and remove radon and its daughters in order to keep their concentrations low and thereby minimize their inhalation by miners. The rate of uptake by both the workers and the general public is often difficult to ascertain. It involves breathing rates, rates of water consumption and other poorly-defined parameters. The final steps are the risk estimators used to predict doses and cancer rates from the inhaled radon daughters and ingested or inhaled radium. Many

"This paper presents an overview and performance evaluation for a reconditioned decades aged open type hard rock TBM utilized for the twin running tunnel excavations of the Second Avenue Subway Project in Manhattan, New York. The TBM tunnel lengths are approximately 2,370 m (7,800 ft, east TBM Tunnel) and 2,190 m (7,200 ft, west TBM Tunnel) with a 6.7 m (22 ft) bored diameter. This “senior” TBM mined through metamorphic rocks consisting of schist, granofels, and pegmatite, and encountered various adverse geological structures, including some relatively heavy groundwater inflows. The ground support was generally pattern friction rock bolts, and steel sets were used in poor ground. This paper presents TBM characteristics and the subsequent performance, such as machine utilization, downtime, cutter consumption rate, net penetration rate, and daily advance rate. Machine operating parameters including thrust, torque, gripping force, and cutterhead RPM, are compared with various accompanying ground conditions. The performance changes between the adjacent tunnel sections are also presented. INTRODUCTION Project Overview The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction (MTACC)’s Second Avenue Subway (SAS) Program consists of four (4) phases from 125th Street to Manhattan Battery Park along the 2nd Avenue (see Figure 1) in Manhattan New York. As a part of Phase 1, Contract 1 was awarded to S3 JV (Skanska/Schiavone/Shea) to build a TBM launch box and subsequent twin TBM tunnels from 92nd Street to 63rd Street under 2nd Avenue. Contract 1 was one of the key contracts in Phase 1 to pre-excavate through the footprint of the follow-on underground stations (72nd St. Station, 86th St. Station, and 96th St. Station) by hard rock TBM excavation. The project team included Client MTACC, S3 Tunnel Constructors, Designer, Aecom-Arup JV, and Consultant Construction Manager, Parsons Brinckerhoff. The major elements of Contract 1 included construction of TBM Launch Box supported by secant pile and slurry walls and mining of twin TBM tunnels with a combined tunnel length of approximately 4,560 m (15,000 ft). The dimension of the TBM launch box was approximately 247 m (810 ft) long from 92nd Street to 95th Street, 21 m (70 ft) to 24 m (80ft) wide along the 2nd Avenue, and 18 m (60 ft) to 21 m (70 ft) deep from the ground surface. The launch box was later used for the follow-on 96th Street Station."
