Pilot-scale tests indicate that effective concentration of fine gold from Colorado River sands can be achieved by flotation with the air-sparged hydrocyclone. The fine sands (55% -400 mesh and 0.01 opt*) from gravity concentration were processed with a 5-cm air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity ~1.0 t/h dry solids). Concentrate grades as high as 5.0 opt were produced in a single stage at a recovery of 75%. The separation efficiency was significantly better than that achieved in conventional batch flotation experiments.

J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point O travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex '85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73 -83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4600 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (la in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the afore- mentioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf -Forschungshefle, 1984, NO. 5, pp. 219-223. INTRODUCTION Anticipated increase of nuclear fuel production in the future coincides with growing concern about the occupational health risk of miners from inhaled radon decay products. As a consequence it has been suggested to even lower presently permitted exposure levels (NIOSH, 1980) and implement more stringent control on measurement programmes. Compliance with these regulations requires large investments in new or modified ventilation systems as well as in increased expenditure for staff and instrumentation for health physics operational monitoring. Since both costs are directly related to the overall ore production costs, this can have far reaching implications with regards to the economic feasibility of certain mining operations and consequently reduce estimates of low-cost minable ore reserves. In addition there is increasing evidence that the radon problem is not limited to the nuclear fuel cycle only, but can also represent a significant hazard to non-uranium miners. A key component in the cost-effective implementation of legislative control measures is the monitoring system employed. The choice of system is decisive for the total costs of installation and maintenance, manpower requirements and accuracy of nuclide determination. In the following operational specifications are defined for monitors in mining and milling environments. Different types of available instrumentation are discussed with regard to their suitability for practical radiation protection in underground mines, open cut mines and mills. ATMOSPHERIC CHARACTERISTICS Underground mines Radon in the air of underground mining operations is exhaled from surrounding rock surfaces, crushed material and, to a lesser extent, from water seepage. Whilst in uranium mines radon releasing ore bodies are generally localized in distinct areas, radon sources in non-uranium mines can be very dispersed throughout the system of mine tunnels. The ventilation scheme used influences the absolute atmospheric level of radon as well as the equilibrium conditions between radon and its decay products (factor F). In uranium mines mechanical forced-air ventilation is normally the only way to achieve and maintain legally required nuclide levels. This causes the F-factor to be rather low, e.g. in French CFA-mines F is of the order of 0.2 (Francois, Pradel, Zettwoog, 1975). At the same time the fraction of unattached radon decay products (fp) can increase due to the high air velocities employed. However, it is possible to find non-uranium mines with either natural draught ventilation only or assisted on demand by forced air ventilation during special operations or climatic conditions. Thereby the F-factor is more dependent on seasonal changes of temperature differences between outdoors and mine atmosphere and work routines. As a result F can cover a wide range from 0.02 to 0.95 (Steinhäusler, 1976). The use of filters or electro-precipitators in mine ventilation systems can modify the atmospheric characteristics twofold as it generally decreases the content of radon decay products, but at the same time increases the content of the unattached fraction fp . Average concentration levels of radon decay products are mostly lower in mechanically ventilated non-uranium mines than in equally ventilated uranium mines and are below 0.3 Working Level (UNSCEAR, 1977). However, some working places in non-uranium mines, specially with only natural draught ventilation can occassionally approach maximum permissible levels as defined for uranium mines (Strong, Laidlaw, O&apos;Riordan, 1975; Snihs, 1976; Sciocchetti, Scacco, Clemente, 1981). Open pit- and surface mines Radionuclide levels of radon decay products in the atmosphere of these mines are mostly too low to represent a significant inhalation hazard for miners, ranging typically from 0.03 to 0.1 Working Level (Steinhäusler, 1976). However, personnel using airpurifying respirators or working in cabins ventilated with filtered air can be exposed to a radon atmosphere with low value for the F-factor (F [<] 0.1) and high fp-value up to 80 % (Leach and Lokan, 1979). Mills Atmospheric radon concentration in crushing, grinding, drying and packing sections depends on the radium 226 content of the ore, ore storage methods and ventilation system employed. Providing adequate ventilation ([>] 2 air changes per hour) and control of dust production radon and its decay products represent only a minor problem (Saconney, 1979). The extensive use of heavy-duty diesel engines in underground mines has raised concerns about the potential adverse health effects to miners exposed to diesel particulate matter (DPM) which contains mutagenic and carcinogenic organic compounds. The purpose of this study was to compare the levels of DPM, biological activity, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) attributable to diesel engines in underground coal mines and similar data collected in engine laboratory facilities to assess whether laboratory data could be used to predict in-mine levels of diesel emissions. Mean in-mine DPM and SOF concentrations varied from 0.90 to 1.9 mg/m3 and 0.08 to 0.40 mg/m3, respectively. DPM-associated mutagenicity (mean) levels at two of the mines varied from 400 to 970 revertants/m3. Concentations of three PAH differed by up to four-fold between two of the mines, largely reflecting differences in DPM and SOF levels. The laboratory raw exhaust data were divided by 100 to obtain expected or predicted values for in-mine concentrations. The predicted DPM, SOF, mutagenicity, and PAH values based on laboratory samples were not significantly different from many of the in-mine values. Using a potential in-mine dilution ratio range of 20 to 200:1, virtually all in-mine data fell within the predicted range. Therefore, an estimate of in-mine concentrations can be determined by evaluating laboratory data. This will allow for extrapolations from laboratory tests with particulate emission control devices to assess potential health-related benefits due to their in-mine use.

In January of 1969 the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare, through the National Air Pollution Control Administration, published a series of Air Quality Criteria (4&apos;S) and Control Techniques (6,7) for air pollutants in compliance with the 1967 Clean Air Act which will affect the operation of all fuel burning equipment in the very near future. The design of equipment for the future which will use fossil fuels will also be affected. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the modifications which might be anticipated in the future for fuel burning equipment. One class of the several air pollutants looked at first by the USDHEW was the sulfur oxides. Other pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, will be studied and controls for these will supposedly be written in due time. The obvious use of low-sulfur fuels, coal, oil and natural gas is suggested by the Control Technique(6). Conversion to other sources of power, such as nuclear energy and hydropower, is also suggested. The statement is made that since possible hydroelectric sources are limited and nuclear plants are not yet available on a large scale, the changeover to these sources of power will not be overnight. The bulletin (6) suggests that one possible solution in some areas may be the use of low sulfur coals for short periods of time during periods of severe air pollution. A curve showing the effect of this was given in the 1969 April issue of the Power magazine, where A. E. Boyer and F. B. Kaylor of Stone and Webster also described a computer program called DOSAGE which might be used to check weather, temperature, humidity, wind direction and velocity, and sound an alarm when that 0.1% of the time per season is here that requires the use of low-sulfur fuel. Humid tropical environments pose many problems for mineral exploration. The problems result from thick lateritic soils, dense vegetation, seasonally heavy rains, deep chemical weathering, few outcrops and thick saprolites. Although geochemical exploration should be potentially a useful technique in these environments, it appears from the scarcity of reports in the literature that insufficient attention has been paid to developing procedures that are specific to the needs of humid tropical areas. For this reason, the authors believe that this account of a geochemical study in a tropical coastal area on the edge of the Brazilian shield is of general interest and importance for potential geochemical exploration surveys in similar areas within the tropics. The objective of the geochemical study was to develop a practical technique of reconnaissance geochemical prospecting for copper deposits in Brazilian tropical coastal lowland areas. In order to achieve this objective, information concerning the secondary dispersion of copper in these areas was required. Consequently, an orientation survey was designed to provide this information. The present account contains details of the geochemical study and the information about the secondary dispersion of copper that was acquired during the course of the orientation survey. Location and Climate The field area is on the Atlantic coastal lowland of Brazil at latitude 13°S. It lies approximately 10 kilometers south of Maragojipe, a city of 15,000 inhabitants; this city is on the western side of the Bay de Todos os Santos about 45 airline kilo¬meters northwest of Salvador. (See Fig. 1) A good gravel road from Sao Felipe to Sao Roque do Paraguay crosses the southern part of the field area. The climate of the area is hot and moist, and is without prolonged dry periods. The mean annual rainfall is about 1600 mm (63 in.) and the greatest precipitation occurs during the winter months of May and June and the summer months of December

As coal mining evolves in this country, underground coal is being mined at greater depth and under more difficult conditions than in the past. At the same time, economic conditions make it necessary to mine more efficiently and economically. As a result, pressures on mining companies arise on two fronts and make the job of mining coal underground very difficult. Recent improvements that have been made in health, safety and productivity have come about primarily due to improvements in existing technology and better management of all the production resources. However, this trend can continue only so far and thus innovation will be needed to continue the improvement. This paper deals with a concept that, on the surface, appears to be more efficient in terms of the costs to provide ventilation. The resulting design is oriented toward increasing the ventilation efficiency through use of a unidirectional ventilation plan but it also promises to increase recovery and decrease the requirements for development entries. To analyze this ventilation concept, two mine layouts with a similar production schedule were planned in a hypothetical 1.83 m (6 ft) coal seam. The first alternative analyzed uses a traditional approach to ventilation with centrally located shafts and a bidirectional ventilation pattern. Using this system, it is necessary to use large-diameter shafts and a large number of main entries. Using the same assumptions on ventilation requirements, the second alternative utilizes unidirectional ventilation whenever possible, a smaller number of main entries and small-diameter blind-bored shafts in the bleeder areas. The comparative analysis is performed using PSU/TDMVS, a computer network analysis program that is capable of determining the ventilation power requirements at any time in the mine life and converting the costs to a present value. The economic analysis is then completed by including the shaft-sinking and entry-driving costs and the costs associated with the recovery of coal that are directly related to the change in the ventilation system. The results are summarized on a present-value basis.

Introduction Tailings disposal methods used by the mining industry include the use of on-land impoundments, surface and underground mine backfill and marine disposal. The latter method, where applicable and under certain circumstances, can be the most economical and best environmental option. The term marine disposal is used to describe deposition of tailings in the open ocean, coastal waters, fjords and inland lakes. A major element in planning and designing a marine outfall is the assessment of its potential environmental impacts. The nature of the disposed tailings, and the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the receiving water body must be carefully assessed prior to deciding whether marine disposal is an acceptable option for a particular project. During the last decade, the North American mining industry has demonstrated a commitment to studying potential adverse environmental impacts of marine tailings disposal and to continue monitoring of the receiving waters. Extensive monitoring programs have been undertaken by Canadian mines. Marine tailings disposal is not used in the United States today. One of the largest U.S. mines proposing to use this option is the Quartz Hill mine of U.S. Borax in Southeastern Alaska. To assure the regulatory agencies and the public of the viability and acceptability of this option, U.S. Borax undertook an extensive program of environmental studies aimed at assessing the impact of marine tailings disposal. This program was part of the feasibility and environmental permitting studies conducted by Bechtel Civil & Minerals, Inc, on behalf of U.S. Borax. Due to the unique nature of the proposed tailings disposal system, a Board of Consultants was established. The Board assisted in planning the modeling and field program and reviewed ongoing work. This paper outlines the basic elements of the marine tailings disposal study program which can be viewed as a prototype for similar studies elsewhere. Background The Quartz Hill molybdenum deposit is located on a knoll in an elevated valley in a mountainous region of southeast Alaska, about 45 miles east of Ketchikan (Figure 1).

The Hai-Shan No. 1 Coal Mine, located in northern Taiwan, is one of the typical coal mines on the island which, limited by natural condition, are mostly small in scale. With the advancing longwall method, the mine is now winning a seam, 80 cm thick, at a 32° dip, with a working depth of 824 m below surface. The annual output is about 50,000 mt of clean coal. At the working gallery, the virgin rock temperature may go up to 46°C, difficult to be brought dam to n acceptable level: because .of the tropical climate with high intake temperature and high humidity. Besides, at this depth, the intake air that goes down the long inclined shaft generates considerable heat due to autocompression. The mine is ventilated by a set of axial-flow fan with 38 m3/S of intake air at 2.2 KPA WG. With this volume of air, the temperature at the working-face is usually above 30°C WB. Appreciable lowering of the temperature is not expected even with an increased volume of ventilated air. For this reason, decision has. been made to try the installation of a pilot underground refrigeration unit near. the lowest gate road to cool the intake. air. from 32°C WB to 28°C WB which seems acceptable to on-the-spot workers exerting heavy physical labor. The experimental unit is designed for carrying away a total heat load of 90 Kw. The capacity of the unit is 200 Kw. The unit consists of a compressor, an evaporator, a condensor and a motor. The heat rejection is done in a cooling tower. Chilled water is circulated from the evaporator to the cooler by insulated pipes. The cooler consists of 90 Kw-coils with two fans and forces air by flexible ducting onto the working face. This paper examines mainly the effect of this additional reduction of working temperature, on working efficiency of the workers. Another aspect of this experiment is to evaluate the overall economy of underground refrigeration in small-sized coal mines under tropical condition. The success of such an experiment may lead to wider application of refrigeration to render many of the deeper mines economically workable.

"INTRODUCTION Tunneling and underground excavation is related to handling of uncertainties, risks associated with geological conditions are significant and ‘unexpected geological conditions’ often claimed. This fact was brought to the table long ago, and ITA (the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association) published its 25 Recommendations on Contractual Sharing of Risks in 1988 (Ref. 1). This public-cation constitutes an important asset to the tunneling industry in terms of being a guideline for those working with contractual issues, even today almost 30 years after being published. A more recent document is the ITIG code of practice for risk management of tunnel works from 2015 (Ref. 9). Various countries or geographical regions have their own view and tradition on risk sharing and tunnel contracts. In Scandinavia unit rates contracts are most commonly used with bid-build model, it shares risk between owner and contractor, owner retains the risk for geological conditions while contractor carries risk for performance efficiency. Rock strengthening is determined assessing rock mass quality encountered at tunnel face. Grouting is applied to stem water. Actual quantities may differ from the contract’s BoQ but a flexible contract with remuneration is installed to enable adjustment of actual quantities. Variations of quantities involve a clause to adjust construction time. Unit price contracts deals with expected and foreseen still ‘unexpected geological conditions’, if the ‘unexpected’ element results in variations in quantities. Work activities have quantities and ‘standard capacities’ for regulation of construction time. Variations in quantities are expected in tunnelling and hardly deserve the term ‘unexpected’. If truly unforeseen geological features necessitate work not included in the BoQ, then the contract must be supplemented and can be said to be inappropriate. Fixed price contracts may not provide the intended predictable cost and is as such also inappropriate in the view of a risk sharing principle, once the geological baseline proves to be incorrect. ‘Adjustable fixed price’ contracts, combining unit rate and fixed price, may prove suitable."

Raman Spectroscopy has become increasingly popular as a method to rapidly identify and characterize minerals, gem stones and other inorganic materials. Raman spectroscopy provides valuable information about the chemical bonds and structure of materials. In fact, the peak locations and intensities observed in a Raman spectrum can often be used to confirm the presence or absence of particular species in a sample. Some modern Raman spectrometers have been designed to analyze samples less than a micron in size while others are designed to rapidly screen bulk material with no sample preparation. Recent advances in software and automated instrument control have greatly reduced the complexity of Raman spectral analysis and provide an easy-to-use tool for analyzing minerals. We will describe the application of several multivariate statistical analysis techniques that have been developed to make use of the spectral libraries. In these techniques the spectrum is treated as a vector and sophisticated mathematical techniques are used to determine which spectral representations in the reference library best match the spectrum from the sample. The DXR Raman microscope was used to 1) Identify minerals by spectral searching, 2) Identifying several species in a sample using multi-component analysis 3) Mapping different species in an aggregate sample and 4) identifying inclusions in a sample.

Since the early 1970&apos;s, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has carried out exploration geophysical research on non-basemetal strategic mineral commodities, including uranium, lithium, gold, potash, and chromite. The chromite study (largely completed) and the potash study (still going on) carried out during the past 4 years have not been aimed at the discovery of new ore reserves, but instead were designed to complement exploration by private mining companies. The USGS has carried out research not normally conducted by these companies, but which can be used by them in their efforts to increase production of strategic minerals. Results of the chromite and potash studies highlight the importance of: 1) a laboratory-research phase (petrophysical and petrographic studies) at the beginning of work on any new commodity; 2) an operative or functional ore-deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework, and the necessity to continually test, refine, and modify it during the study; 3) indirect geologic/geochemical indicators, secondary associations, and the use of multiple physical properties; and 4) the use of a systematic inverse-cost sequential-exploration (i.e. lowest resolution and lowest cost first) strategy to keen the exploration economically reasonable. The keystone to the success of the study is frequent and substantive dialogue among geologists, geophysicists, and geochemists.

Mine productivity, measured by the output of minerals per manshift, depends on a number of factors including physical conditions of the minable seam, type of mining equipment, management techniques, worker attitudes and governing jaws and regulations. The greatest scope of improving productivity lies, perhaps, in modifying physical conditions to an advantage and using highly productive equipment. In the case of coal mines, increased productivity can be achieved by (i) obtaining prior knowledge of the mineable property, e.g., the grade and thickness of, the coal seam, presence of sand channels, faults, etc., (ii) eliminating conditions that hamper production, e.g., high emissions of methane and water, and (iii) using more productive mining techniques. Conoco/Consol&apos;s (Conoco Inc. and Consolidation! bal Company, a fully-owned subsidiary) horizontal drilling system was developed with the hove objectives in mind. It can drill 75 to 1001 in diameter boreholes to depths of more than 600 1 and maintain the borehole in a preselected horizon. Such boreholes can be utilized for premining exploration of the coal seam, for removing methane and water and in devising mining techniques with high productivity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the horizontal drilling system briefly and to discuss its applications in the above-mentioned- areas.

Two samples of iron enriched basalt (IEB) containing simulated nuclear fuel and having two distinct microstructures were prepared and tested for uranium recovery. The IEBs are refractory towards leaching by ground water. However, the uranium content (15.8%) is high enough that if aggressive leaching techniques are used for uranium recovery, these materials could be considered as man-made uranium ores. The IEBs discussed in this report were prepared to simulate Three Mile Island-2 core debris. The crushed IEBs were treated using three different methods simulating potential industrial scale processes. In one method the IEBs were fused with sodium hydroxide then the cooled mass leached first with water then with dilute sulfuric acid; about 52% of the uranium was recovered in this case. In the second method the IEBs were treated with a sulfuric acid/hydrogen peroxide lixiviant and about 13% of the uranium was recovered. In the third technique the IEBs were leached with a sodium carbonate/sodium bicarbonate/hydrogen peroxide solution. Only about 0.1% of the uranium was recovered. The results of these screening tests suggest that the IEBs can be successfully treated for recovery of the contained uranium. Other studies would be required to determine if other values, such as zirconium or silver, could be recovered from the IEBs.

In order to put an end to the uneven environmental standards and enforcement established by various coal mining States in the United States, the Congress passed and the President signed the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (Public Law 95-87 or the Act) on August 3, 1977. Within one year after passage, the Secretary of the Interior was directed to promulgate permanent program regulations implementing Title V provisions of the Act. These regulations were to form the basis for State regulatory programs under the Act and to allow States to assume primary regulatory responsibility. In order to implement the underground mining provision of the Act, the Secretary is directed in section 516(a) of the Act to promulgate rules, but ones which take into consideration the distinct differences between surface coal mining and underground coal mining. The regulations developed by the Secretary and promulgated on March 13, 1979, with respect to subsidence control, included (1) a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process, (2) substantive provisions establishing performance standards for subsidence control, and (3) provisions providing for the prohibition of mining under perennial streams, impoundments larger than 20 acre feet, and certain public facilities and urban areas.

The Symons Cone Crusher was invented by Edgar B. Symons in 1923. It was quickly accepted as a superior secondary and tertiary crusher. Nordberg manufactured crushers for the Symons Brothers Co. and in 1928 acquired the Symons Cone business. Since then, the Symons cone has become the standard of the Mining Industry. This is due to the basic rugged design and Nordberg&apos;s continued efforts to modernize and upgrade the crusher design over the years. In 1930, the Heavy Duty model was introduced with a 225 kW (300 HP) rating. Then in 1931 the Short Head version was developed to handle finer crushing applications. In 1950, the 7 Ft. XHD design was produced which provided higher crushing force capabilities for harder ores and for smaller product size requirements. Finally, in 1978, the 7 Ft Super Heavy Duty design was created to expand the power rating to 500 HP and to further increase the crushing force limits. The first 7 Ft. Super Heavy Duty crushers were delivered to Bougainville Copper Ltd. in 1978 for the production of primary ball mill feed in a three stage crushing plant with the third stage in closed circuit. The product size was 80% minus 6.35 mm (1/4 in).

Judging by the inquiries that come to Battelle, a number of companies have run into problems in determining the size and character of markets for mineral fillers in general and specialty fillers in particular. Usually these problems arise during a project to develop a new mineral filler when management suddenly realizes that a considerable sum of money will have to be spent before any profits are realized from sales of the new filler. What management needs in this case is the odds for or against the success of the development. And these odds frequently are controlled by the markets for the new filler. Basically, the problems involved in gaging markets can be simplified to how much of this new filler can be used and by whom? But there are some potential booby traps in these simple questions that should be exposed. This paper will discuss a few of these problems such as: 1. Describing the filler so that the prospective customer recognizes its possible applicability. 2. Finding; a prospective customer who can verify the filler&apos;s applicability. 3. Expanding successful test results to total industry markets. 4. Appraising competitive products, and 6. Discovering all the possible uses for the new filler.

As a significant mineral supplier, consumer of primary fuels, and producer of wastes and emissions to air, water, and land, the domestic copper industry through its investment and operating decisions influences the nation&apos;s economy and the environment. In turn, the copper industries&apos; decisions are influenced by various factors: government energy and environmental policies, economic conditions, and technological considerations. The authors have developed a framework for assessing in an integrated manner the impact of these factors on the future investment and operating decisions made by copper firms. Specifically, this model is designed to capture the technology forcing nature of regulatory constraints, the differential situation of individual copper deposits and plant locations, and the price of factor inputs and conditions in the nation&apos;s economy. The capability to do this has only become real because of the decision of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to create Mineral Availability system1 or MAS. This system contains detailed but confidential information about each mine and mill in each of 35 mineral industries." Without MAS or a similar information system, the utilization of the methodology we offer would be impractical, but with. MAS it offers a unique technique of dealing with environmental-resources policy questions.

Mineral liberation modeling can be traced back to the early work 0fA.M. Gaudin up through more recent population balance modeling by R.p. King, J.A. Herbst and G.T. Adel. A more micro-scopic look was taken at the University of Utah in the form of the J.E. Sepulveda and J.D. Miller Pargen model which permits the creation of an arbitrary shape, multiphase particle made up of discrete grains. Recent work on image analysis and tomographic analysis by J.D. Miller and C.L. Lin have laid the experimental ground work for model validation, but until now it hasn&apos;t been possible to include the necessary physics of the particle stressing process to allow the development of a &apos;ffirstprinciples"mode1 which does not presuppose a "mode” of liberation (e.g., random or by detachment). Recent developments in discrete grain breakage (DGB) modeling now make a generalized physics based model feasible. This paper describes current work that is being done to develop a physics based discrete grain liberation (DGL) model. Two-dimensional and three dimensional simulation results exploring the effects of particle size, phase properties and loading type are presented. Relationships between energy based liberation efficiency, degree of random liberation and material properties are identified.

Introduction In this technical note, pilot-scale tests with two types of gravity concentrators, the Knelson separator (Anon., 1983; Forssberg and Johansson, 1984) and the Mark VIIA Reichert spiral concentrator (Balderson, 1982; Forssberg and Johansson, 1984), are described. The experimental work was concentrated on the relatively untried Knelson separator. The materials tested have different concentration characteristics: one was an artificial ore with excellent liberation characteristics and with a wide difference in density between valuable and gangue minerals; the others include a spiral concentrate containing gold from the gravity circuit of Boliden, Sweden, an old scheelite tailing from Yxsjöberg, Sweden, and an auriferous ore, containing gold, that had not been crushed to full liberation. The latter three materials contained other heavy minerals, e.g. pyrite, that can interfere with concentration. Knelson separator The Knelson separator is a compact centrifugal separator with an active fluidized bed to capture heavy minerals. A centrifugal force equal to or exceeding 50 times the force of gravity acts on the particles. The strong centrifugal force traps the heavier particles in a series of rings located in the concentrator while gangue particles are flushed out (Fig. 1). The particular separator used in the tests has a 15-cm (6-in.) diam bowl and can process between ~70 and ~250 kg/h.
