Materials related problems at mines can be big ones - like a newly completed 1 -m (3.5ft) water pipeline burst during initial filling, grinding ball consumption at double the typical norms on startup of a new semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill circuit or 30 open-pit haul trucks in the shop for new bed liners after less than a year’s service. Materials engineering provides solutions to these kinds of equipment problems by selecting good materials and designs, by trouble-shooting service failures and by maintaining high quality in vendor-furnished materials and components. Materials with good properties, correctly made and fabricated, correctly installed in mining and processing equipment, produce ore and final products reliably and efficiently. Materials engineering, applied during design phases, specification writing, and receipt and installation of materials, ensures that equipment will have the best possible shot at performing up to expectations. Good calls on materials properties - specifying state-of-art materials produced by competent manufacturers - help mine managers to reduce downtime and mining and processing costs. Materials that are improperly made or specified can make a mining operation less efficient or, possibly, uneconomical.

Contract 75-124-211 extends along the Chicago River from Roosevelt Road on the south to Ogden Avenue on the north. In addition a branch tunnel runs east from approximately mid-project ending near Lake Michigan. The contract was bid on December 14, 1977 with three joint-ventures submitting bids. Of these the joint venture of J.F. Shea Co., Inc. Walnut, California, (Sponsor), Peter Kiewit Sons' Co., Omaha, Nebraska and Shea Company and Associates, Walnut, California was low with a bid of $101,976,680.00. The MSD awarded the job to the Joint-Venture on January 5, 1978 with a scheduled completion date of January 23, 1983. The project consists of the following major items of work: (1.) A 25'-0" minimum diameter Construction Shaft, 220 feet deep (2.) 13,726 Linear Feet of 30'-0" Concrete lined Tunnel in rock (3.) 6,648 Linear Feet of 13'-0" Concrete lined Tunnel in rock (4.) Seventeen concrete lined Drop Shafts varying in finished diameter from 4'-0" to 12'-0", and each approximately 250 feet deep with chambers and connections to the tunnels varying from 100 to 1300 feet in length.

During construction of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit System, the hand-mining of a mixed-face condition was anticipated on a portion of tunnel located in the downtown area of Washington, D.C. The Section, consisting of two circular tubes, extends from Station 12+80, heading in a westerly direction, traverses along a curve under Lafayette Square, and ends in a northwesterly direction at Station 37+62 (see Fig. 1a). It was near the northernmost portion of the section that the mixed-face condition was encountered. Decomposed rock was first encountered in the invert at Station 31+00. From this point the rock gradually increased in height until it intersected the springline at Station 37+62, the project limit. Summarized within this paper are measurements of the soil load on a horseshoe-shaped portion of tunnel located in the mixed face condition. These measured loads are compared to the soil load on tunnels as determined by current design methods. The paper also discusses rib and surface movements associated with the post loading process. Comments will be made on how the presence of a mixed face condition might help or hender the tunnel design and construction procedures.

Liebherr Mining Equipment Co., of Newport News, VA and Baxter Springs, KS, introduced the T282, a new two-axle, diesel-electric, AC drive haul truck with a payload capacity of 327-t (360-st). The T282 was unveiled at a press briefing in October 1998 at the company's Baxter Springs research and development1 manufacturing facility. In addition to an increase in pay- load capacity, the truck's AC drive system has been de- signed to allow for easy configuration to a trolley-assist system with minimal additional equipment. The T282 provides fuel savings, reduced maintenance requirements, and reduced downtime and maintenance costs, providing the mine operator with increases in productivity. Basic dimensions and weight of the T282 are: ? Overall length, 14.5 m (47.5 ft). ? Overall width, 8.7 m (28.7 ft). ? Loading height, 6.5 m (21.2 ft). ? Height - body up, 13.9 m (45.9 ft). ? "Underground mine diesel equipment generally offers more flexibility as compared to electric powered systems. Diesel exhaust is an adverse agent which affects the health of underground miners. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) regard diesel exhaust as carcinogenic. The NIOSH 5040 method is an established technique for measuring Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM). This process inherently involve a lag time before an accurate exposure determination can be made during which miners are potentially overexposed to DPM. This issue can be addressed by using realtime DPM monitors. This paper presents underground mine shift average based and realtime monitored DPM values monitored in US mines. A FLIR Airtec instrument has been used for realtime measurement whereas shift average based DPM has been determined by the use of NIOSH 5040 method. A log of diesel equipment movement was kept. DPM concentrations versus time were plotted and analyzed. High DPM sources were identified and the FLIR Airtec was demonstrated to be satisfactory for realtime DPM measurements. INTRODUCTION The use of diesel equipment in mines is an attractive option due to its ability to convert a large fraction of available energy into useable work. Diesel engines are rugged, dependable and fuel efficient. It is very common for diesel engines in heavy duty trucks to have a life of 1,600,000 km [Anon, 1999]. Generally in underground mines compared to electric powered equipment, diesel equipment provides more maneuverability. It can be assumed that the underground mining industry will maintain its reliance on diesel powered equipment keeping in mind the recent developments in other energy alternatives [Anon, 2001a]. A harmful aspect to the use of diesel as a fuel is its resultant emission as an adverse environmental exposure agent. Generally diesel particles are approximately one order of magnitude smaller than respirable dust aerosols in underground mines (typically less than one micron in size) [Kittelson, 1998]. Force of gravity has less effect on DPM due to its small particle size. The phenomenon of less gravitational attraction increases the settling and residence time of DPM in the mine atmosphere. High residence time of DPM as compared to other mechanically generated particles increases the chances of diesel particles deposition in the human respiratory tract. The small sized diesel aerosols penetrate deeply into regions of the human lung [Morawska. et al. 2005], which increase the health risks associated with long term exposure to diesel aerosols. Published studies documented the adverse health effects of DPM exposure [Walsh M.P., 1999]. Continuous and long term DPM exposure can result in respiratory disease, lung cancer, reduced lung capacity, and heart disease. NIOSH has declared that the reductions in DPM exposure would reduce cancer risks. In underground mines DPM determination is a challenging task and it is becoming a matter of serious concern due to the harmful health effects associated with the exposure of DPM. The current study involves the determination of realtime and shift averaged based DPM in underground mines of United States of America (USA). Realtime DPM was measured using FLIR Airtec monitors and shift averaged based measurement was performed by the MSHA approved NIOSH 5040 method. FLIR Airtec uses laser scattering approach to measures the Elemental Carbon (EC) component of the DPM. The results from the FLIR Airtec were compared with the results of NIOSH 5040 method and its performance was found satisfactory."

GENERAL HYDROLOGIC REGIME The total hydrologic cycle must be considered when evaluating potential ground water problems in a mining environment. Precipitation is the ul¬timate source of all surface water and essentially all ground water. Stream flow during low flow periods often orig¬inates as seeps or stream gains (base flow) where the water table intersects the land surface. A stream that is higher in elevation than the ground water system may lose flow, thereby recharging the ground water system. The magnitude of stream gain or loss is dependent upon the hydraulic conductiv¬ity and related properties of the underlying hydrostratigraphic units. Ground water moves constantly from recharge areas to discharge areas (streams and springs) usually at very slow rates. Large quantities of ground water may be in¬tercepted in many underground mining environ¬ments. Construction of an underground mine in saturated formations may encounter ground water inflows ranging from very small to very large and from continuous to intermittent depending upon the hydraulic properties of the hydrostratigraphic units penetrated. SURFACE WATER VARIABLES Precipitation occurs in different forms, varying amounts, and with a wide assortment of temporal and areal distributions in the various mining dis¬tricts within the United States. Mine inflow can be affected in a matter of hours by precipitation events where there is a direct hydraulic interconnection between the mine and the surface through fractures or a mine opening. The timing, form, amount, and distribution of precipitation should be evaluated in a mine inflow study. A portion of the precipitation that falls in a topographic basin moves as sheet flow to runoff channels (Fig. 1). Some of the precipitation infil¬trates the unsaturated soil zone where it can either move laterally as interflow to the surface system to augment stream flow or move downward as re¬-charge to the ground water system. The unsatu¬rated zone (called the zone of aeration or vadose zone) can range in thickness from essentially zero to a few hundred feet. The saturated zone or ground water system occurs below the water table (zone where hydrostatic pressure is greater than atmos¬pheric pressure) where all the pores are filled with water (Freeze and Cherry, 1979, p. 44). Moisture can be lost from any of the systems (surface water system, unsaturated zone, and ground water sys¬tem) by the processes of evaporation and transpir¬ation which return moisture to the atmosphere. Stream flow consists of runoff and interflow components plus an additional base flow compo¬nent (Fig. 2). Base flow constitutes ground water discharge to a stream. Base flow plays an increas¬ingly significant role as total stream flow declines. Base flow is important because it constitutes much if not all stream flow between periods of precipi¬tation when runoff and interflow have largely dis¬sipated. INTERACTION OF SURFACE WATER AND GROUND WATER SYSTEMS Recharge from a surface water system to ground water systems can occur via unsaturated or saturated flow. The amount of recharge is depen¬dent primarily upon the vertical hydraulic conduc¬tivity of the formations underlying the stream and the availability of water. Streams that flow over low hydraulic conductivity formations lose little water even if the ground water levels are significantly lower than the stream. A ground water system may contribute flow to a surface water system but nor¬mally only by saturated flow. This contribution usually takes the form of seeps, springs, and the base flow of streams. INTRODUCTION Coal mine entry intersections are high-risk areas for roof falls due to inherently wide roof spans, excessive stress, and variable intersection shapes resulting from breakthrough misalignments. Statistics from underground coal mines reveal that a high percentage of injuries occurs from roof and rib falls in entry intersections (Peng, 1980). The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is conducting a field research project to investigate failure modes surrounding underground coal mine entry intersections. The research objectives are to (1) develop a method to determine failure modes and stress-displacement relations around coal mine intersections and (2) develop engineering guidelines and empirical relationships for use in designing safer coal mine entry intersections. The basic approach to achieve the objectives is to instrument and monitor intersections before, during, and after intersection development in order to determine contributing parameters, such as in situ stresses, stress changes, strata movement, geology, physical properties, and mining sequence, that may influence the short- and long-term stability of the intersection and adjacent entries. This paper describes a rock mechanics instrumentation program, data analyses, and a comparison of two case studies conducted at two underground mines, designated as "A" and "B", in the Illinois Coal Basin. The instrumentation plans and data collected during development and long-term monitoring of four-way intersections and adjoining entries are presented. Data analyses of pre- and post-mining roof stress, pillar loading, strata movement, roof bolt loading, and geologic features are included. INTERSECTION FAILURE MECHANISM The region surrounding an entry intersection is characterized by different failure criteria than the region surrounding a single entry. Stresses induced during intersection development may result in a high incidence of roof and rib failures. Various numerical modeling techniques have been used to evaluate the failure modes surrounding intersections (Gercek, 1982; Chugh et al., 1975). Numerical modeling techniques include problems associated with the analysis of post-failure behavior, provision for different horizontal stresses (i.e., 01 f 021, and determination of inputs required for any non-elastic behavior. It seems likely that more sophisticated failure criteria, based on actual field data, are needed. The Bureau of Mines has conducted an extensive instrumentation program to investigate actual intersection failure mechanisms and to provide an improved understanding of stresses and deflections using beam and plate theories. Beam theory is not applicable to analyzing intersections (Wright et al., 1964); however, it can be used to explain roof deflection and failure (shear and flexure) of adjacent entries and to provide an improved understanding of stress changes and displacements as the entries, crosscuts, and intersection are developed (Hanna et al., 1985). Beam theory may be used for entries when the roof length is twice the width. When the length is less than twice the width (as in intersections), the roof must be analyzed as a three-dimensional problem, and stress and deflection calculations are based on flat plate theory (Adler and Sun, 1976). The confined-core theory (Wilson, 1972) hypothesizes that within a typical pillar, two regions exist: a confined-core region where the horizontal confining pressure is uniform and approximately equal to the overburden pressure, and a yield zone where the vertical pressure increases from nearly zero at the rib to a pressure peak at the boundary of the yield zone. The strength of coal in the yield zone ranges from nearly zero at the rib to nearly full strength at the confined core. The vertical stress in the confined core decreases from maximum at the yield zone boundary to the overburden pressure some distance into the pillar. Excavation of the adjoining entries

For small precious metals mining to show a comeback a different perspective must be taken than that of larger mining companies. This perspective must be much the same as that of past successful smaller mining enterprises such as when the US had a need for Uranium. Abandoned mines and environmental concerns in older mining districts have discouraged many from entering with the attitudes of why try there if so many unsuccessful mines exist. A small mining venture can be successful there but must have a "think smart'' attitude. There must be a thorough understanding of deposits, utilization of advanced technology and a properly managed mining operation. "THINK SMART" MINING The small mine operator is usually looking for small high grade deposits, consequently, long term success depends on a series of small successful mining operations. The small miner must succeed right-off or credibility and future project funding will suffer. No veteran of even a few years in the mining industry needs to be told that a dollar spent on production today fails to yield as much as it once did. More efficient equipment and techniques have helped soften the problem, but there is little likelihood that a mining company can do much to control inflation, wages, regulations, or grade. That leaves the small miner to "think smart" as one area where operating dollars can still be stretched to produce more than they presently do (Gardner. 1981). In the planning stage of a mining venture, when most options are still open, the main controllable elements are market timing, deposit selection, cutoff grade, mining method, mine design, mining sequence, rate of production build up, process design, project financing structure, project management, and project ownership structure. During planning, optimum criteria can be established for each of these. Once a mine is in production, these options are foreclosed or at least severely constrained. The more thought given to a mining program using all information available the less the risk of encountering disabling surprises. Thus the intent of this paper is to suggest the "think smart" attitude most small mine operations use for long term success. If one looks at a number of successful mining ventures, whether large or small, there is a general logic most have followed to be successful. They have used proven exploration, mining and processing techniques along with economic evaluation and experienced personnel to improve their odds. LOGIC IN DEVELOPING A FEASIBLE VENTURE Most successful small mine ventures achieve positive cash flow as quickly as possible by seeking out those deposits which require the least time and expense on activities leading up to production. To do this they look for deposits that are the most accessible, easily investigated, mined and processed with the cheapest fundamental methods. The general sequence of events starting with district selection are deposit selection, preliminary feasibility, exploration, detailed economic feasibility, mine planning, development and production. Each successive step becomes more costly requiring intermediate decisions along the way. District Selection Small operations should look for known deposits which favor the occurrence of the type deposit sought rather than efforts in unproductive areas. Known deposits in developed areas have some advantages over remote areas: 1. More alternative methods of transportation are available. 2. A larger stable work force is available. 3. The area is usually more pro-mining. 4. Power, water, housing, technical services, skilled services, schools, recreation and shopping are available.

Introduction This paper attempts to describe the characteristics of the industrial minerals segment of the minerals industry that make it different from the other segments. Also described are the trends, strengths, and shortcomings in the industrial minerals segment. This may help professionals in the minerals industry determine if there is a place for them in industrial minerals. Industry Overview It is difficult to generalize when describing the industrial minerals industry. Some products, such as cement and potash, are produced exclusively by large, well capitalized and technically sophisticated companies. Others, such as sand and gravel, are generally produced by small, family-owned companies operating on a shoestring budget. Still other products, such as feldspar, are produced by both types of companies. Not only are the companies vastly different, the products and marketing of their products are also different. Industrial mineral products are sold based on their physical characteristics (abrasives), or their chemical characteristics (trona), or both (glass sand). Marketing can be direct by the producing plant, a corporate office handling products form several plants, or through distributors. The geologic, mining, and processing skills needed can be minimal or sophisticated. There can even be large differences in the technical skills needed in two plants producing the same product. One feldspar producer may only need to mine and grind his ore, while another may use a delicate flotation process. One easy generalization is that there are industrial mineral operations in all geographic locations. A second is that industrial minerals offers more opportunities to entrepreneurs than the metals field because of the variety in the sizes and types of operations. Industry Growth Industrial minerals must be considered a mature industry. Consequently, little exciting growth can be expected. Over the past 30 years, industry sales have grown at a rate of 6.2%, compared to a 6.7% growth rate of the GNP (Kliff, 1978). A 3.8% growth rate has been forecast for the remainder of this century. The fortunes of those plants producing a product for local consumption will depend on the prosperity of the local economy. The fortunes of those plants that sell into the national market will depend on their competitiveness in their industry. Major industrial mineral products are shown in Table 1. The first three commodities account for 66% of the industrial minerals market. Typically, deposits of stone, sand and gravel, and the limestone, silica, and clay needed for cement are easy to find and mine. Role of Mining Engineers and Geologists Because a sophisticated techcical knowledge of geology or mining is not required, very few geologists and mining engineers are employed in industrial minerals. Geologists working for these companies function less as geologists than managers and executives dealing with permitting and land acquisition. Likewise, mining is done mostly by open-pit methods. It is generally supervised by an individual experienced in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, not a mining engineer trained in rock mechanics or computer methods of mine planning. What of the geologists and mining engineers employed by the industrial minerals industry? Many gained their positions as a result of their experience dealing with the regulatory agencies that control the operations of all mines and mills. Their technical expertise in geology or mining becomes only a side benefit. Finding and mining industrial minerals does not generally require the concentrated efforts of geologists and mining engineers. But the processing of the ores does

Introduction One hundred years ago, a recent college graduate created the US aluminum industry. He found an economic way to crack the primeval bond that makes the metal so special. Aluminum doesn't "rust" - oxidize progressively. Rather, when exposed to air, it instantly forms a gem-hard but microscopic oxide coating. This seals off oxygen from the metal underneath. Scratch it and the seal reforms instantly. That tight chemical bond is the reason the metal is not found in nature; it exists only as a compound. The bond had to be broken to free the shiny metal. But once it is free, that self-sealing protection, alongside a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, offers a marvelous material. Until 100 years ago, finding a way to do that economically was a challenge that defied science. Then it was solved, in a remarkable coincidence, on both sides of the Atlantic. And the way was paved for a material that would become the second most widely used metal in the world. Until that time, aluminum was a rare and precious metal. But then two young scientists independently invented the process that took aluminum outside the laboratory and into applications ranging from pots and pans to spacecraft. Discovery of aluminum Other major metals - copper, iron, lead, gold, and silver - had been used for thousands of years. But aluminum was entirely unknown until 1782, when French chemist Antoine Lavoisier suspected its presence. It was not actually discovered until Sir Humphry Davy, in England, detected it in clay in 1807. It was first isolated as a free metal only in 1825, by Denmark's Hans Christian Oersted. For years, laboratory methods yielded aluminum only in tiny amounts costing about $1200/kg ($545 per lb) - $13,333/kg ($6000 per lb) in today's dollars. Methods developed by French scientist Henri Sainte-Claire Deville in 1854 cut the cost to about $200/kg ($90 per lb). King Frederick VII of Denmark had a helmet of aluminum and gold. And Emperor Napoleon III of France reportedly served his most exalted guests at a state dinner with aluminum plates. He left the lower ranks to dine from pure gold. Deville and others continued to reduce production costs. But the price of aluminum still rivaled silver - $31/kg ($14 per lb) versus about $35/kg ($16 per lb) for silver. Then in 1884, a 2.8-kg (6.25-1b), 230-mm-tall (9-in.-tall) aluminum pyramid was cast as the tip of the Washington Monument. It was probably the first architectural use of aluminum. And it is still there after more than a century. The attractive properties of aluminum were obvious: it is lightweight but strong, conducts heat and electricity, reflects light and other electromagnetic radiation, and resists corrosion. But its commercial promise was blocked by its cost. In 1885, the price of aluminum was $17.70/kg ($8 per lb). It stayed there for the next couple of years until the Hall-Heroult process brought it down sharply. Hall-Heroult process lowers aluminum costs The characteristic that kept aluminum hidden so long continued to thwart chemists. Aluminum clings to oxygen so tightly that it is never found as a free metal in nature, and it is hard to break that bond chemically. The best chemical methods of the 1880s required sodium, and sodium itself was expensive. At Oberlin College in Ohio, chemistry professor Frank Fanning Jewett advised his students that anyone who could make aluminum inexpensive would do humanity a favor and get rich as well.

INTRODUCTION In most uranium mines the concentration of uranium in the ore is low enough that inhalation of dust does not present a radiological problem. Conversely in the mills there is a potential inhalation hazard from inhaled uranium in concentrated form, namely "yellowcake" and other compounds intermediate between the ore and the final product of the mill. It was generally assumed that the solubility of yellowcake placed it in the category of Class D materials. This plus the fact that the uranium is non-enriched led health physicists to assume that the potential health hazards were a result of the uranium's chemical properties rather than its radiological properties. Bioassay programs have thus been limited to routine urine sampling at a weekly or monthly frequency. In most cases when a high reading was obtained, subsequent sampling within one or two days showed a rapid return to low levels, therefore tending to confirm the class D nature of the material. Two developments over the last few years have however suggested that modifications to this simple bioassay program may be necessary and practical. Firstly, a number of studies on the solubility of uranium mill products, from ore to yellow cake, in simulated lung fluid (Eidson A.F., Mewhinney J.A., 1980) have shown that some of the material is not class D, but class W or even Y. This raised the possibility that, while the urine levels rapidly decreased, indicating rapid excretion of the class D component, the W and Y components remained in the lung. Thus an unsuspected lung burden could have been accumulated. The second development, the ready availability of [in vivo] counting facilities with which to make direct measurements of uranium lung burdens, offered a means of confirming the hypothesis of unsuspected lung burdens. A study was therefore initiated to correlate lung burdens with urinary excretion. METHOD A total of 79 subjects from 3 uranium mills participated in the study. They were brought to the Ottawa laboratories of the Radiation Protection Bureau in groups of 4 or 6, over a period of several months. In Ottawa, [in vivo] thorax measurements were performed, and a urine sample collected. Each subject also brought with him a urine sample that had been collected the previous day. All samples were split, for analysis by both R.P.B. and the mill laboratory. [Concentrations of Uranium Dust] Results obtained by mills A, B and C for concentrations of uranium in air at various locations are given in table 1. Samples taken at mill B were obtained using continuous sampling with a midget impinger over a six hour period. Samples taken at mills A and C were 5-minute gravimetric samples. [Subject Selection] The subjects were selected to represent a wide range of work history in terms of both length of employment and type and location of job, as shown in table 2.

INTRODUCTION The use of backfill materials in underground mines has been practiced for many years and the trend indicates an increased utilization of backfill materials in the future. The authors believe that underground uranium mines will follow this trend. Classified mill tailings, approximately 65 to 70 percent solids by weight, are the most common fill materials. Cement or other pozzolanic agents can be added to the fill materials to improve their strength characteristics. Dry fill, in the form of development muck, can also be introduced in the stopes to fill the voids left by the action of mining the ore. This paper deals mainly with the assessment of the radiation properties of backfill materials originating from uranium ores processed in the milling facilities of uranium mines. The paper outlines the results of studies conducted in the laboratory and in the field on radon emanating characteristics of backfill materials utilized in uranium mines. ROLE OF BACKFILL IN UNDERGROUND MINES Fill is a structural component of any underground mining system. In general terms, the purpose of filling is to provide ground support, to make recovery of pillars possible to provide a working platform for men and equipment, and to allow for waste disposal. There are other inherent advantages to the use of backfill underground, the most important being to: a) permit mining at greater depth b) allow the adoption of highly mechanized mining techniques c) reduce dilution from wall sloughing d) minimize roof and wall failures e) allow the mining of irregular orebodies, and f) to provide better control of ventilation. The last item is of great importance to uranium mine operators. The introduction of radioactive backfill underground represents an additional source of radioactive contamination; on the other hand the introduction of backfill in the mine reduces the volumes of workings to be ventilated. As a consequence the general mine ventilation is more effective and in most cases, better air quality can be maintained in the mine. There are of course some disadvantages associated with the use of hydraulic fills in underground mines, notably: a) the handling of large additional quantities of water from the underground workings b) delays caused by the cyclical nature of the backfilling operations c) additional costs associated with stope preparation and placement of backfill in stopes, and d) "spills" caused by bursting pipes or fill escaping from fill retaining structures. ASSESSMENT OF NON-RADIOACTIVE PROPERTIES Although the radioactive properties of mine backfills are discussed in this paper many other physical and chemical properties of backfills must also be considered. Cognitive representations and misconceptions of flow through circuits is an area which has received little attention from science educators, cognitive psychologists, or accident investigators. Misconceptions are also called Aristotelian thinking. They involve a person using primitive unscientific ways of reasoning to make decisions about events (Piaget, 1929; Nussbaum & Novick, 1982; McCloskey, 1983). The use of such primitive concepts leads to errors in reasoning about scientific and technical problems. The existence of misconceptions is well documented among children, adolescents, and adults involved in learning science concepts (Piaget, 1929; Cole & Raven, 1969; Clement, 1982; Mistrell, 1982; McDermott, 1984; Richardson, 1987). Concepts of flow through circuits are important because miners' conceptual errors about these aspects may be, in part, responsible for two fatal mine disasters. On at least two separate occasions, methane gas explosions occurred in underground mines when separate ventilation systems were connected (Elam, Fuller, Carter, Cavanaugh, Fesak & Painter, 1983; Fesak & Cavanaugh, 1984). A review of these disasters indicates that conceptual errors made by miners may have resulted in the accidents (Cole, Wala, Haley, & Vaught, 1987). In this study, co-author Andrzej Wala, stated that his research had "identified conceptual errors that may have caused the miners in these disasters to make fatal mistakes" (Cole et al. 1987), p. 167. Further exploration of these conceptual errors by Wala has led to the hypothesis that misconceptions of basic aspects of flow distribution changes in mine ventilation circuits, are at least, in part, responsible for some mine disasters caused by errors in ventilation systems (Wala & Cole, 1987). Why should these conceptual errors occur? Ausubel (1963) suggested that students come to a new area of study with their own conceptions or preconceptions about how a process operates. Furthermore, these preconceptions may be in conflict with the empirical data from the discipline. In such cases, learning becomes a process in which new concepts must displace or be re-molded from stable concepts that the student has constructed over many years (Clement, 1982). Given the existing research with misconceptions and the work of Wala and Cole (1987), it was hypothesized that experienced miners; either working miners, students of mining engineering, or professional mining engineers, harbored misconceptions about the formal or conceptual aspects of mine ventilation circuits. The misconceptions hypothesized to exist involved flow distribution changes in complex mine ventilation circuits; specifically, how does flow distribution change when a ventilation circuit pathway is altered? Borates are defined as ' 'salts or esters of boric acid; a compound containing the radical B203" (Bates and Jackson, 1987). Borates are defined by industry as any compound that contains or supplies boric oxide. A large number of minerals contain boric oxide, but the three that are the most important from a worldwide commercial standpoint are: borax, ulexite, and colemanite. These are produced in a limited number of countries (Fig. 1), dominated by the United States and Turkey, which together furnish about 90% of the world's borate supplies (Lyday, 1991). Production in the United States originates in the Mojave Desert of California; borax and kernite are mined by US Borax from its large deposit at Boron. Borate containing brines are pumped from Searles Lake by North American Chemical Co., and a limited amount of colemanite is mined by Newport Mineral Ventures from Death Valley. Turkish production is controlled by Etibank, the national mining enterprise, which supplies most of the commercially traded ulexite and colemanite from mines in the Bigadic and Emet Districts, plus borax from the huge deposit at Kirka. Borate minerals have been employed in a wide range of uses for many centuries, dating from at least the 8th century when they were used primarily as a flux for assaying and refining gold and silver. Their valuable properties and relative rarity soon stimulated international trade in borates; Marco Polo claimed to have trans- ported Chinese borate minerals from Tibet to Europe, and his home port of Venice was the center for borate imports and use throughout the Middle Ages (Travis and Cocks, 1984). Borates were traded at relatively high prices for highly specialized applications into the late years of the 19th century. At that time they were being used for medicines, food preservatives, ceramic glazes, and in expanded applications as metal fluxes. It was in that era that borax was discovered in Clear Lake, CA, and more significantly, the playa deposits of western Nevada were found and exploited by F.M. "Borax" Smith and others. Research and development by Smith's company began the evolution of borates from a high priced commodity with a few specialized uses to the relatively low priced chemical raw material used in large tonnages on a worldwide scale today. Borates are often defined and sold by their boric oxide or B,03 content, and most statistical data are listed in tons of B203. Of the products sold by the industry, borax pentahydrate or 5 mol and boric acid are the most commonly traded commodities. Boric acid plants are operated by all of the major borate producers. Glass fiber insulation is the major end use in the United States followed by textile glass fiber and borosilicate glass, detergents, and ceramics. Detergent usage continues to be a major end use in Europe.

INTRODUCTION The small mining company faces the dilemma of how to finance the development of its properties because it doesn't have the financial resources to pay for the development costs from its own funds and doesn't have the financial strength which will enable it to borrow the money needed for development. However, with a little imagination and the right set of circumstances, a financing can be arranged for the small mining company. This paper is an attempt to describe the fundamental steps on how such financing can be obtained --in other words--what is required to provide ad- equate capital at a low cost for developing and bringing a mining property into production. Innovative financing follows from this. The basic keys for building and maintaining a successful mining company are "the four M's": Management, Market, Mine, and Money. The writer believes their order of importance is as presented and each is a building block required in order to obtain the type of financing that best suits the borrower and lender. MANAGEMENT Management must be experienced, highly organized, realistic, able to take advantage of opportunities and fulfill promises. Mine financing requires a variety of skills and concentration on the part of management. Management should have a thorough understanding derived from experience in geology, construction, mining and metallurgy and environment, marketing, and financial matters. Management must realistically visualize what will be produced at what cost and truly evaluate the risks associated so the proper security can be correctly designed. Since risk cannot be eliminated, the objective of management is to identify the risk which will be present in a given venture and assess the level of that risk which will be acceptable to the firm. Generally the risk which is present is subject to little or no modification. After management identifies and measures the acceptable risk the firm will proceed in a way that it will be least exposed. Management must determine its long-term objectives and strategies within the context of a constantly changing world. This question must be addressed before examining the sorts of risk which affect the development and operation of a specific property. The compilation and interpretation of "hard data" by competent people is good to a point but the experience and instinct of seasoned individuals are the important factors in management choosing a long-term direction for the corporation. The attitude towards risk greatly affects the goals of the corporation. Major risks in a mining project can be placed in four categories: 1. Market - Price, demand, substitution. 2. Costs - Capital, operating, financial. 3. Regulation. 4. Taxation. The feasibility study for a project is the fundamental tool used in the management of risk. Management should employ an experienced team with an established and well-understood set of ground rules for the preparation and assembly of a feasibility study. The necessary degree of realism is built into all levels of the study and if the project is technically feasible, the company's hurdle rate is then used to discount the base-case project cash flow in order to determine its financial viability. Understanding the geological significance of the mineral deposit is critical. There should be strong interplay among the pure regional geologist, the detailed mine geologist, the mining engineer, and the metallurgical engineer. The collaboration among these different disciplines will yield a feasibility study that is more reliable. The essence of this work must be appreciated and understood by the executives planning the financing. It is vital that they thoroughly understand the risks and make the proper risk assessments to cope with our rapidly changing market environment. Projecting future revenue values is paramount and is subject to much estimation. One way to mitigate fluctuations and the risk of falling prices is by selling production for future delivery. MARKET Since mining is a worldwide industry it is mandatory that bankers be aware of what is occurring in the marketplace, both foreign and domestic. Introduction A section of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 specifies the procedure for areas the US Bureau of Land Management manages that have wilderness qualities. In part, FLPMA specifies that within 15 years of its approval, the Secretary of the Interior shall review roadless areas of 20 km2 (5,000 acres) or more and roadless islands of public lands identified during the inventory as having wilderness characteristics described in the Wilderness Act of 1964. Further, the Secretary shall report to the President his recommendation as to the suitability of each area or island for preservation as wilderness. However, before any recommendations for, wilderness designation, mineral surveys shall be conducted by the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines to determine if any mineral values are present. And finally, a Presidential recommendation for wilderness designation becomes effective only if so provided by an Act of Congress. BLM Inventory Procedures To fulfill these legal requirements, BLM is inventorying the land it manages for wilderness qualities. Since the law sets special provisions for Alaska, BLM included in its inventory only the public lands it manages in the conterminous US. In 1980, after public input, BLM picked 967 areas to be considered as Wilderness Study Areas. All of the selected WSAs are in 11 western states and the areas total about 97,128 km2 (24 million acres). From these 967 areas, through its multiple-use planning system, BLM is making initial recommendations of areas to be considered suitable for preservation as wilderness. Those WSAs that BLM initially considers suitable for wilderness preservation will have mineral surveys conducted by the USGS and the USBM, to determine mineral values. Based on these mineral surveys and other resources information including wilderness qualities, the Interior Secretary will report to the President his recommendations on the WSAs suitable for wilderness preservation. To make the initial recommendation of suitability, BLM managers will need information about geology, energy, and mineral (GEM) resources as well as information about other resources. BLM has begun a GEM assessment program to provide its managers with that information. This program is designed to provide information for a WSA suitability decision process that aims to supply minimum necessary GEM information. In essence, the program will provide preliminary assessment of the mineral potential for each WSA. Assessing the WSAs To accomplish this, a two-phase program was designed. In phase one, only existing data are collected and used. In phase two, new data are generated and added to existing data. Phase two begins only if BLM geologists, mining engineers, or managers consider the information provided in phase one as inadequate. This avoids unnecessary work and expenses and allows the program to proceed without undue delay. Figure 1 shows the two-phase process, including BLM's GEM in-

Abrasives are substances both natural and synthetic that are used to grind, polish, abrade, scour, clean, or otherwise remove solid material usually by rubbing action (as in a grinding wheel), but also by impact (pressure blasting). Facts about the discovery, early use, adaptation, and development of abrasives prior to the 20th century are few. From the sparse, earliest information that is available, it would appear that the science of abrasives began when, to fashion his tools, man began to select certain kinds of rocks in preference to others because of their peculiar properties. There is evidence that stones were sawed by some sort of grinding machine as early as 4000 BC in Egypt. The real expansion of abrasives use coincided with the beginning of metallurgy in the Middle East around 2000 BC. The earliest confirmed use of abrasives for grinding metal comes from a steel dagger found along with a sharpening stone which was dated at about 1500 BC. Natural and manufactured abrasive substances play an important role in fashioning and finishing numerous products with a wide variety of end-use applications. The mining and preparation of crude, natural abrasives for their markets and the manufacture of synthetic and other abrasive materials contribute significantly to the US economy (Table 1). In addition, just as sawing to specific dimensions enhanced the value of the Egyptian stone, the use of abrasives in fabrication of modem products, and the addition of abrasives to others, add value. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS The most important physical properties of materials that qualify as abrasives are hardness, toughness (or rigidity), grain shape and size, character of fracture (or cleavage), and purity (or uniformity). To fabricate bonded abrasive products such as grinding wheels, additional considerations include stability under high heat and bonding characteristics of grain surfaces. The economic factors of cost and availability are always important. No one singular property is paramount for any use. For some applications extreme hardness and toughness are needed, as in diamonds for drill bits. For other uses, factors of greatest importance are hardness and ability to break down slowly and, in the process, develop fresh cutting edges when grains become worn. In garnet sandpaper, for example, highly cleavable, friable, or extremely tough grains are not desirable. For other uses, extreme hardness may be objectionable. Abrasives for dentifrices and for glass-cleaning soaps are cases in point. For the most efficient uses in more critical applications, different types of abrasives are rarely completely interchangeable. While crushed quartz and garnet are both used in sandpaper, the two abrasives are not at all interchangeable in their applications. In the final analysis, the choice of a high-grade abrasive depends upon the quality and quantity of work performed by the abrasive per unit of cost. Initial cost of an artificial abrasive may be much greater than that of a natural abrasive, but the artificial mineral may do so much better work and do it so much faster that the ultimate cost is less. It is for this reason that artificial abrasives have largely replaced natural abrasives.

"The acoustic emission/microseismic monitoring (AE/MS) technique has widely been used in the mining environment for the monitoring of rock mass stability. A successful implementation of the method is hinged on being able to accurately determine the P- or S-wave arrival which is then used in the determination of the source of an event. Determination of the arrival phase is usually performed visually by a human expert. However, the mining environment is characterized by high noise levels and different noise types of varying intensities. Therefore, performing manual phase picking on time series data acquired from the AE/MS monitoring system can sometimes be tedious and time consuming if not impossible. In this paper, a proposal for improving manual P-wave phase arrival picks is discussed. The method involves the filtering of the AE/MS data using a stationary discrete wavelet transform (SDWT) method. After filtering, appropriate scales/levels of the multi-level decomposition process are then selected for further processing. The first step in the picking process after filtering, requires the computation of the signal power and the root mean square (RMS) using the signal amplitudes at each scale. The preliminary P-phase arrival time is picked using the results of the calculated power and RMS values respectively. The calculated RMS values are then superimposed on the calculated power values to determine the final arrival picks. If the arrival time picks obtained by both methods coincide or are within 5 to 10 sample points, the pick is considered reliable. The accuracy of the method was verified using AE/MS data from two datasets obtained from two separate underground mines. The results of the study showed that the picking method is reliable and robust. Based on the data studied, it can be concluded that the method will help reduce the time usually spent in processing AE/MS data from mines. INTRODUCTION A successful identification and location of the source of acoustic emission/microseismic (AE/MS) events is mainly dependent on the onset time of the P-wave phase. In many seismic networks, initial picks are performed by picking algorithms followed by manual picks by human experts. If the waveform signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is low, the P-wave onset time picks by the human expert is generally reliable and accurate [1]. However, for waveforms with high SNR, picking of the P-wave onset could be a major challenge. Also, due to the volume of data acquired daily, manual processing could be stressful and time consuming [2]. These challenges continue to provide motivation for alternative means of providing reliable and efficient ways of improving manual phase picking. The AE/MS technique has been an intergral part of safety monitoring in mines [3] due to its capacity to identify zones of instability in a monitoring area. To obtain an accurate source of an AE/MS event however depends on the quality of the data used for P-wave phase picking [4, 5]. AE/MS data from mines are generally contaminated with excessive background noise generated by the different mining operations. The AE/MS signals of interest are mostly buried in background noise which makes it difficult to pick the P-wave phase arrivals [4]. Processing AE/MS data acquired in noisy environment remains a major challenge due to the weak nature of AE/MS signals [6]. As noted by [4] most of the data recorded in the mine environment are mainly due to events not related to AE/MS events of interest. The complexity of data in this type of environment makes the detection and picking of P-wave arrival by human experts a very difficult task."

The recognition of perlite as a distinct volcanic glass, and of the arcuate fractures that often characterize these natural glasses, dates back at least to the late 19th century and perhaps into the 18th century (Howell, 1974). Some authors suggest that recognition of perlite dates considerably further into antiquity, perhaps to the 3rd century BC (Caley and Richards, 1956). Most recent definitions identify perlite by the presence of vit¬reous, pearly luster and by the presence of characteristic concentric or arcuate perlitic fractures. As discussed more fully below, arcuate fractures in perlite need not be megascopic. The textures of perlite which commonly occur in deposits range from dense to highly vesiculated to pumice-like. Thus, the classical definition of perlite is descriptively restrictive compared to the natural range of textures and neglects to address the issues of genetic origin and geologic occurrence. In spite of the petrological usage of the term perlite, the in¬troduction of expanded perlite aggregate into industrial markets caused the term to be applied as well to the lightweight, cellular aggregate that is produced through the rapid thermal expansion of milled perlite ore. Perlite is distinguished petrologically from other natural glasses by a silicic or rhyolitic composition by the presence of 2 to 5 wt% total chemical water held within the glass structure and often by the presence of pearly luster and onionskin-like perlitic fractures. Worldwide, occurrences are associated with Tertiary through early to middle Quaternary volcanics and with the glassy portions of silicic domes and flows, with vitric tephra, with the glassy chill margins of dikes and sills, and with the glassy portions of welded ash flow tuffs. Less commonly, perlite is reported in association with the glassy portions of volcanic plugs and lacco¬liths. The perlite carapaces that partially or fully comprise extru¬sive domes and flows are often thick and areally extensive, and thus provide commercially attractive targets for low cost open pit mining. Perlite tuffs and tephras are also important commercial sources. Mining costs are minimized by open pit quarrying and by either bulldozer ripping or blasting. Crushing and sizing facilities are generally close to the pits. Due to the low weight and large volume of expanded perlite, unexpanded perlite that has been crushed and sized is usually shipped nationwide directly to local markets where it is expanded and processed for distribution to end users. The vast majority of international trade is in unexpanded perlite. In the United States, the evolution of the expanded perlite industry can be traced to the late 1930s and early 1940s when expanded perlite aggregate was introduced into gypsum plaster and concrete markets as a substitute for vermiculite (Schundler, Jr., oral communication, 1991) and was promoted for use in a much broader spectrum of products (Howell, 1974). By the early 1950s, end user markets were well established and small expanders were numerous east of the Mississippi River. Today, mining and expan¬sion is undertaken throughout the world. Worldwide production of perlite is dominated by the former Soviet republics, the United States, and Greece. Total worldwide production of processed perlite during 1990 is estimated at roughly 1 778 000 tons (Davis, 1991). The physical properties of expanded perlite that give this prod¬uct unique commercial value include: low bulk density, chemical inertness, high insulating ability, nonflammability and fire resis¬tance, and its ability to retain water. These and other physical properties give expanded perlite value in such uses as: lightweight acoustical and thermal insulating aggregate; component in plaster, insulating cements and lightweight concrete; loose fill insulation; as aggregate in horticultural applications; and in milled form as filter aid. In the United States and Europe, the largest end use is within building construction products.

INTRODUCTION This work is a continuation of the preparatory study by Rustan and Stöckel 1979 (3) and (4) of the possibilities to introduce automatic mine ventilation in Swedish mines and construction works. The preparatory study has been financed by the Swedish Board of Technical Development. In the study it was recommended that an automatic step by step control of the fans near the working place due to diesel exhaust emission would be the best solution. A more advanced alternative would be to regulate the fresh air continuously in proportion to the contamination. The latter alternative has been studied by Boliden Mineral Co in the Udden mine. In this study it was found that the air supply could be regulated continuously but it was very important where the sensors feeling the contamination were placed. An intense study of the environment underground is now being planned by our division together with specialists from the National Board of Health and Safety, The Swedish Work Environment Fund, LKAB and the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. Different gases, radon, dust, airspeed, moisture temperature and pressure is planned to be measured continuously and correlation between the parameters is going to be established to decide the best measurement parameters for regulating the system. The best situation of sensors is also going to be studied. Despite this work hasn't been done yet this paper covers some of the problems which could be encounted with continuous regulation. In this report the environment has been studied during the test with step by step regulation of fans by radio. Diesel vehicles are the largest polluters under ground in Swedish mines and we have therefore suggested that the large diesel vehicles should regulate the fans. The goal of this study has therefore been to find how active diesel vehicles should be able to start and stop gallery fans at both intake and return air. In this paper different methods for activating fans are discussed. Then the best methods are chosen and tested in the mine. In this study we have found that changes of temperature is a cheap and effective method to start and stop cross cut fans in sublevel caving and radio signals seem to be an attractive system for start and stop of gallery fans. This work has been done in close collaboration between LKAB in Kiruna and the University of Luleå - Division of Electronics and Division of Mining and Rock Excavation. A reference group for the project has been established with ventilation experts from the mines, representatives for the local mine worker's unions and authorities from the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. VENTILATION SYSTEM STUDIED In the project the ventilation system at LKAB in Kiruna has been studied. The mining method used is sublevel caving with 9-13 m slice height. The air is heated winter time over ground by hot water heat exchanger. The main fans are pushing air down to a main distribution level along the 4000 m long and about 100 m wide orebody. From the distribution level, air is taken through shafts down to the sublevels, where it is pushed through the levels by local gallery fans on both intake and return side, see fig 1. The air ( ~ 8 m3/s) is moving freely through the gallery head. The cross cuts are ventilated with smaller fans, diameter 500 mm, and flexible duct, see fig 2. The aim of this study has been to study how to start and stop gallery- and cross fans and examine the environment when the fans are stopped . In Sweden there are no regulations telling that a minimum of air amount must be supplied. Instead the hygienic limits must be fullfilled.
