The installation procedure of fully grouted rebar bolts requires that the bolt be pushed through the resin grout until it is fully inserted in the borehole. Resin grout is a highly viscous fluid that is forced to flow through the annulus between the bolt and the borehole as the bolt advances. Variables such as bolt insertion speed, bolt vs. borehole diameter and grout viscosity determine the magnitude of the pressure generated ahead of the bolt tip. Under weak rock conditions, the magnitude of the pressure of bolt insertion is often sufficient to initiate hydraulic fracturing along joints or bedding planes that allow injection of grout into the strata leading to significant loss of bolt encapsulation. The grout pressure front has also been linked to gloving, a bolt installation problem that reduces bolt effectiveness. A series of tests were conducted to characterize the pressure of bolt insertion during bolt installation under various conditions. Analysis of the data shows three distinct stages of pressure build up during bolt installation. Understanding of the mechanisms involved may allow development of strategies for controlling the pressure buildup and its negative impact during roof bolting under weak rock conditions.

The precipitation and removal of arsenic from process waters can be accomplished with addition of lanthanum chloride alone or in conjunction with ferric sulfate. The long term stability of these corresponding precipitated compounds is critical from the disposal stand-point. In this paper the characterization of ferric, lanthanum and lanthanum-ferric arsenate compounds formed at room temperature in acidic and alkaline pH is presented. The characterization techniques used included zeta potential, XRD and SEM. Zeta potential measurements of ferric and lanthanum hydroxides in the presence of arsenate indicate that oxyanions of arsenate are chemically adsorbed onto the positively charged surfaces of these hydroxides. In alkaline pH there is desorption of arsenate species from the ferric hydroxide surface, hence the product is thought to be unstable. On the contrary, lanthanum arsenate is stable in alkaline pH. XRD patterns show that the ferric arsenate formed in acidic and alkaline pH is amorphous, whereas lanthanum arsenate and lanthanum-ferric arsenate formed in acidic and alkaline pH are crystalline.

Composite agglomeration process (CAP) is an effective method to utilize the iron-bearing dusts generated in the ironmaking plants, by which the dust percentage in the sinter feed can be increased up to 20 wt %. In the current study, a comparison on behavior of iron-bearing dust in the conventional sintering process (CSP) and CAP was characterized. The results showed, in the CSP products, the scattered iron-bearing dust in the mixture was disadvantageous for the sintering indexes and consolidation of the finished sinters. In the CAP products, the main phase in the iron-bearing dust pellets was well-crystallized Fe2O3 grain particles. In the matrix parts, there were more Fe3O4 particles generated, which caused to high RDI+3.15 and low RI of the finished products. The pellets and the matrix parts were bonded by iron oxides and acicular calcium ferrite.

Powered haulage has been, and continues to be, a major source of severe accidents and fatalities at metal/nonmetal surface mines. Between 1986 and 1997, truck drivers accounted for63% of the lost-time injuries in surface haulage. This project was undertaken to reduce the number and severity of lost-time injuries among operators of these trucks. Work involved measuring shock acceleration at a western surface mine during representative work cycles on two types of trucks and collecting data from cab floors using a triaxial accelerometer and from operator seats using a seat pad accelerometer. NIOSH researchers also used the mine’s GPS systems to locate shock events on a mine map in real time. Shock tests were also run at Caterpillar, Inc.’s, proving grounds in Green Valley, AZ, to determine the magnitude of shocks resulting from controlled rock drops onto the bed of a haulage truck.

Objective, accurate, and fast assessment of damage to buildings after an earthquake is crucial for timely remediation of material losses and safety of occupants of buildings. Laser scanners are promising sensors for collecting geometrical data regarding the damaged states of buildings, as they are able to provide high coverage and accuracy at long ranges. Yet, we have limited knowledge on the performance of laser scanners for detecting earthquake damage, and requirements of such data collection. This paper focuses on characterizing the performance of laser scanners for detecting thin cracks for damage assessment of reinforced concrete frames. We identified a series of crack parameters based on the state-of-the-art damage assessment codes and standards. Similarly, we identified parameters, which affect the performance of laser scanners for detecting cracks, based on prior research in this area. We studied the width, depth, and orientation of cracks; sampling interval of the scanner, and the range of the laser beam from the surface. Effects of these parameters on the detection of the minimum crack size were determined in an experimental setting. An automated algorithm was used to analyze the data. The results show that it is possible to detect as small as ~1mm cracks.

"The effect of current reversal on two commercially manufactured electrodes (RuO2-TiO2 and IrO2-Ta2O5 coated Ti) in a chloride bearing electrolyte was evaluated. Accelerated lifetimes were found to decrease with increasing current density and increasing reversal frequency. Ru: Ti coated electrodes exhibited longer lifetimes than Ir: Ta coated electrodes even though they had one-third as much precious metal content. Chloride concentration did not affect lifetime in the range examined. Using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the failure mode of the electrodes was determined to be coating dissolution leading ultimately to passivation by the presumed growth of a highly resistive oxide at the coating/substrate interface.INTRODUCTIONCatalytic titanium anodes (CTAs) were developed in the 1960’s to replace graphite anodes in chlor-alkali cells. CTAs exhibited much better dimensional stability than graphite leading to lower operating potentials by promoting smaller electrode gaps and better operational efficiencies as they had to be replaced less often. CTAs are simply Ti substrates coated with precious metal oxides (such as IrO2 and RuO2) mixed with other components (such as TiO2 and TasO5) (Trasatti, 2000).CTAs are used in many other electrochemical industries, including water disinfection, wastewater treatment, cathodic protection and metal plating. RuO2 based coatings are typically used for chlorine evolution. IrO2 based coatings are for the most part utilized for oxygen evolution (Comninellis & Nerini, 1991; Forti, Olive, & De Andrade, 2001; Kotz, Stucki & Carcer, 1991; Trasatti & Lodi, 1981)"

Three high-grade limestone ores (CaO content over than 53 %) with different geological origin have been characterized for the synthesis of aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate. Limestone ores examined in this study showed different crystal particle size that cause difference in disintegration degree and surface area of the synthesized slaked limes. The limestone ore with smaller crystal particle size showed higher disintegration degree and also yielded slaked lime with smaller surface area, which is good for the synthesis of aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate. The synthesis of aragonite PCC using the limestone with a small crystal particle size was yielded needle-shaped aragonite with the aspect ratio of about 14. This paper describes the results of a detailed analysis of a loess deposit at the deep foundations test site established by the Kansas Department of Transportation. Multiple CPT, SPT, and pressuremeter tests were conducted as part of the investigation. This paper includes an evaluation of the effectiveness of common correlations used with the CPT, SPT when used for classification of loess and estimating its properties. Results show that common correlations must be used with caution as significant errors in estimation may result from using methods developed for other soil types. Laboratory testing included direct shear, triaxial, collapse, and consolidation testing, with many of the tests conducted on both vertically and horizontally oriented samples to evaluate anisotropic behavior. The results showed that strength properties could be considered to be isotropic.

"One of the thrust areas for the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) program is the development of actinide bearing fuels for transmutation in a fast reactor. Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel has an extensive fast reactor irradiation history and thus is being considered for use as a baseline composition from which minor actinides can be incorporated for use as a transmutation fuel. The current study involves characterization of precursor powders and pellets destined for the Advanced Test Reactor in Idaho. These pellets will have three compositions: one standard MOX composition, (U0.80Pu0.20)O1.98, and two compositions of minor actinide mixed oxide (MAMOX) with oxygen to metal ratios (O/M) of (U0.75Pu0.20Am0.03Np0.02)O1.98 and (U0.75Pu0.20Am0.03Np0.02)O1.95. The precursor powders were characterized using a field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEG-SEM) to determine particle morphology, size, and size distribution. An electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) was used to characterize element distributions in the pellets.IntroductionThe fundamental purpose of GNEP is to enable a fuel recycling partnership between member nations. The customer nations utilize the fuel for electricity generation provided by and subsequently recycled by the supplier nation. The supplier nation recycles the actinide constituents, mainly uranium and plutonium, in advanced nuclear power reactors, and thus reducing waste volumes [1, 2]. Nuclear materials are strictly controlled through the International Atomic Energy Agency. The morphology of the actinide powders was studied in the areas of flowability and porosity in order to predict manufacturability. The MOX pellets were characterized using an EPMA in order to determine impurity levels and locations."

"There is an expanding interest in synthesizing high quality magnetic nanoparticles, most notably for biomedical applications. Different processing routes have been reported for the synthesis of magnetite and maghemite. However, some ambiguity remains on their precise chemistry, intermediates, and final products, due to the structural similarity of maghemite and magnetite, and the relative ease of redox transitions during synthesis. Here we present the results of TEM, x-ray and electron diffraction, and SQUID studies aimed at characterizing the products from two different reaction systems, thereby clarifying the reaction chemistry. The first system hydrolyzed aqueous FeCh and FeCb chlorides with ammonia in a micro fluidic reactor at ambient temperature; although the reaction product displayed a uniform distribution, it included non-magnetic goethite and lepidocrocite. If the aqueous solutions contained dissolved oxygen, there appeared to be extensive oxidation of Fe(II). The second system thermally decomposed iron (III) acetylacetonate in ether. In prior studies, oleylamine has been reported to serve as both a reducing agent and capping ligand to control particle characteristics; however, our studies revealed little reduction, with maghemite dominating the reaction products.IntroductionMagnetite and maghemite nanoparticles are co=only used in ferrofluids, in medical applications, and in drug delivery. Superparamagnetic properties, along with low cytotoxicity, colloid stability and bioactive molecule conjugation capability, make these nanomagnets ideal for both in-vitro and in-vivo biomedical applications [1]. One of the major constraints on widespread adoption of nanoparticles for these applications is the amount needed. Typical batch synthesis methods produce polydispersed nanoparticles, which require further size selection procedures to isolate the mono disperse nanoparticle population needed for many applications. In order to maximize the yield of usable particles from a synthesis operation, the reaction conditions must be closely controlled. This requires full knowledge of how the reaction conditions control the various aspects of nanoparticle growth. Many methods have been used to synthesize iron oxides, including sonochemical reactions, mechanochemical synthesis, hydrolysis and thermal decomposition. This work examines the latter two methods, focusing on oxidation and reduction of iron."

Regardless of the advantages of the Friction Stir Process (FSP), for age-hardened aluminum alloys, the mechanical properties such as hardness in the stir zone decreased after FSP due to the growth or dissolution of strengthening precipitates. Here, as a new technique, FSP was introduced to alloy copper nanopowders in Al7075 T651. Mechanical properties of copper nanopowder- alloyed Al7075 T651 together with micro and nanostructures were compared with those of as-FSPed Al7075 T651 using SEM, TEM, and Vickers hardness testing to understand structure-property relationships. It was observed that Vickers hardness of the stir zone in copper nanopowder alloyed Al7075 T651 increased by 20% compared to that of the heat affected zone, while the as-FSPed samples did not show a noticeable increase in hardness in the same zone. Xray mapping showed traces of copper nanopowder after the process. TEM is being used to verify if there was CuAl2 formed in the copper alloyed sample.

Hydrocarbon polymers, as PP, made from cheap petrochemical feedstock are important in many branches of industry. However, they have an undesirable influence on the environment and cause problems due to waste deposition and utilization. Polymeric materials composites account for an estimated from 20 to 30% of total volume of solid waste disposed. Thus, there is a tendency to substitute such polymers by those ones that undergo biodegradable processes. Polypropylene (PP) is a commodity, with high melting point, high chemical resistance, low density, with a balance between physical and mechanical properties and easy processing at low cost. Nevertheless, PP shows limitations for some special applications in automotive industry and civil construction. In order to minimize this deficiency, related to rheological behavior of polymer melt, especially referring to viscosity in processing temperature, a 50% mixture with HMSPP (High melt Strength Polypropylene) was used. PP/HMSPP was blended with 10, 15, 30 and 50% of natural (sugarcane bagasse) and synthetic polymers (PHB and PLA) aiming to partially biodegradable materials. The admixtures were subjected to gamma-irradiation at 50, 100, 150 and 200 kGy and then further assessed by mechanical tests in order to evaluate their degradability.

Laboratory trials were performed in an induction furnace to study droplet formation during lance blowing. Compressed air was blown on a molten iron bath consisting of iron alloyed with carbon and silicon. Steel droplets were collected using a specially designed sampler. The average steel droplet composition and the oxide layer thickness were determined using scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersed spectroscopy. In addition, the concentration gradient of elements was determined using a microprobe. It should be noted that a special technique had to be developed in order to prepare the droplet sample. The size distribution and composition of the droplets was also determined using the microprobe. It was found that the carbon content in the droplets was lower than the carbon content in the bulk.

Three samples received from the EAF shop were characterized by chemical, X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods. The objective of this characterization work was to investigate the occurrence of nickel, copper, zinc, sulfur and phosphorus and to identify their origin and associations with iron minerals in the concentrate samples from the mines. The samples were identified as MINERAL, PELLET, and HRD. The latter is the DRI product. All three samples were received as fine powders. The results indicate that, in the mineral sample, magnetite is the major iron oxide mineral with hematite as a second phase based on the OM and XRD studies. Pyrite [FeS2], chalcopyrite [CuFeS2] and bravoite [(Fe,Ni)S2] are the major sulfide minerals. Trace amounts of apatite [Ca5(PO4)3(F,Cl,OH)], wardite [Na4CaAli2(PO4)8(OH)8 6H2O], giniite [Fe;(PO4)4(OH)3 2H2O] and vivianite [Fe3(PO4)2 8H2O] were identified by SEM and XRD. Microscopic studies also indicated that most of the sulfide grains in the mineral sample are present either as liberated fine particles (about 10 microns) or as inclusions within the magnetite and hematite grains. XRD studies revealed magnetite as the major mineral with subordinate amounts of hematite and pyrite confirming the microscopic findings. Copper, nickel, and zinc are mainly present as chalcopyrite, bravoite, and franklinite [(Zn,Mn,Fe)(Fe,Mn)2O4] in trace amounts in the mineral samples, respectively. Impurities carry over to the pellet and HRD samples. Chemical analyses of the three iron-bearing samples indicate that sulfur and phosphorus in the pellet sample exceeded the specification. Since liberated pyrite and chalcopyrite particles were observed in both the mineral and pellet samples, magnetic and flotation processing routes should be effective for sulfide removal but at the cost of iron losses. The high phosphorus content of all three samples indicates that there are phosphates which are difficult to remove by the current concentrating processes (magnetic separation and flotation).

Fourteen samples of crushed Duluth Complex rock were characterized by the QEM?SEM automated scanning electron microscope image analysis system to evaluate the application of the system to mining waste rock characterization. The system can reliably distinguish the iron sulfides, the copper-iron sulfides and the nickel-iron sulfides. Calcite was distinguished from all other minerals except fluorite. The volumetric abundances were verified by comparing elemental abundances calculated using the QEM"SEM volumetric percentages and appropriate mineral compositions with elemental abundances determined by standard laboratory procedure. The pH and sulfate concentrations of rinse water from laboratory leach experiments correlated well with the mineralogical data.

A prime objective of physical coal cleaning is the separation of raw coal into a clean coal product with the required low ash and pyritic sulfur content and a high ash refuse. The refuse should also contain a minimum amount of combustible matter. In order to be effective, cleaning processes require that the mineral matter in the feed, including pyrite, be largely discrete and free particles, liberated so that the particles are not attached or embedded in coal. Liberation of mineral matter from coal, particularly pyrite, was investigated by Bechtel as part of two fine coal cleaning research programs sponsored by the Department Of Energy (DOE), Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC). Two proof-of-concept (POC) plants, each with a capacity of 900 kg per hour, were installed and tested to evaluate production of ultra-clean coal using microbubble flotation and spherical agglomeration technologies. The plants were designed to produce clean coal with 2 percent ash and pyrite content lower than that achievable by conventional methods. Also, the quality targets were to be attained at energy recoveries above 80 percent. Bench-scale flotation and agglomeration tests indicated that it would be practical to grind the 6 mm top size feed coal to a mean particle size (050) of 10 micrometers in the POC test plant. In this part of the paper, the steps taken in the grinding circuit to maximize liberation of mineral matter are described.

INTRODUCTION As mineral particles are made smaller and smaller, it follows that their surfaces assume a greater and greater importance. In the extreme, the colloidal systems are characterized by the complete dominance of surface over bulk properties. Surface characteristics and properties will clearly influence any fine-particle processing operation. Comminution, for example, is a process of creating new surface. Agglomeration, on the other hand, may involve the reduction of surface area and the forces involved are generally surface forces. All mineral separations, solid-solid as well as solid-fluid, involve the treatment of two or more phases (solid plus liquid and/or gas). As the interfacial area increases, so will its effects on processing. Both physical and chemical separations are influenced by interfacial phenomena. Gravity separations are usually performed in a liquid phase and may be affected, for example, by the wetting characteristics of the solids. Flotation processes, of course, are based on the exploitation of differences in surface properties. Hydrometallurgical processing usually involves interfacial chemical reactions, e.g. leaching. The rates of such reactions depend on surface area and may be influenced by electrochemical effects in the electrical double layer at the solid-liquid interface, or by adsorption of reactant and/or product species from solution. In characterizing a mineral surface, it is important to consider first the surface area, since this determines the relative importance of the interfacial effects. The structure and chemical composition of the surface, which may depend on segregation of impurities within the solid and on adsorption from the external environment as well as on the bulk composition of the solid, will generally determine such

"Abstract -A multi-sensor (electromagnetics, magnetics, gamma-ray spectrometry, and VLF) geophysical survey was recently conducted in the Purcell Basin of southeastern British Columbia in an area encompassing the world-class Sullivan Sedex deposit. The purpose of the survey was to geophysically characterize the known mineral occurrences and to develop strategies to enhance future mineral exploration in the basin. Follow-up investigations of geology and measurements of rock physical properties helped constrain interpretations of the geophysical data sets.Despite extraction of more than 90% of the ore from the Sullivan deposit, it is clear that the mineralization there, as well as at other Sedex occurrences surveyed, is characterized by high conductivity values, strong bedrock conductors, and elevated magnetic anomaly values. The albite-sericite alteration which accompanies this mineralization yields high potassium and low thorium-potassium ratio values. Associated Moyie gabbro is characterized by low electrical conductivity and radioelement concentrations and by high magnetic anomaly values. The study has also aided exploration for other mineral deposit types including stratabound Cu-Ag, placer gold, vein and disseminated basemetal deposits. Solis from an abandoned Pb battery processing facility were characterized prior to the selection of the extraction technique. Reflected light microscopy and electron beam methods were used to locate Pb-bearing phases and to quantify the compositions of the phases. It was found that the soils are composed primarily of quartz and feldspars with minor amounts of iron and titanium oxides. Lead is primarily present as an oxide or sulfate that is associated with the silicate minerals. Specific phases identified were PbO; Pb02; cerrusite, PbCO3; angleslte, PbSO4; galena, PbS; and magnetoplumbite, 2PbO3Fe2O3; or plumboferrite PbO2Fe2O3?

"The cost effective and sustainable production of high purity rare earth elements is still challenging. The most commonly used method, known as solvent extraction, is very complex, needs many steps to separate the rare earth ions in a high purity, and causes a lot of environmental problems. An alternative method is the utilization of a separation column filled with adsorbent material. Within the column the desired target substance can be selectively separated out of a multi component mixture in one step. To find out if an adsorption material is suitable for the separation with a column, a characterization of the adsorbent material is necessary. In this paper are described the usage of modified activated carbon (oxygen and phosphorous modification), Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) impregnated Amberlite® XAD 7 HP and Lewatit® VPOC 1026 as adsorption materials. Several adsorption isotherms and process conditions are determined to characterize the selectivity between the adsorption materials and different rare earth ions. With these isotherms the mass specific rare earth ion retention for the adsorbent materials can be calculated. In addition to the isotherms the best working parameters are investigated e.g. pH-value and the time for equilibration. Finally, the separation factors between two rare earth elements are determined. The separation factor shows how successful a two element system can be separated."
