The minerals industry is facing a productivity and investment crisis. The ‘Millennium Super Cycle’ from 2003–2011 was an unprecedented period of growth and investment resulting in increased throughput and development of lower grade resources to meet demand. During the boom quantity became more important than quality with throughput the key metric. This was accompanied by a general trend of decreasing feed grades across all commodities that was offset with higher production volumes.Current industry perception is that feed grade depletion is an unavoidable consequence of ore deposit geology and mass mining technologies for increasingly mature mining operations. In typical crush-grind-float operations value recovery only takes place at ~1–200 micron particle size during flotation, ie 3–4 orders of magnitude size reduction compared to primary feed. For increasingly low-grade deposits the cost of energy and capital intensity required to process and reject low value material at micron scale drives poor productivity. An alternative is to deploy a range of coarse (~10–100 mm) separation and rejection technologies. Grade Engineering® is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans.Coarse rejection can be used on size distributions ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) discharge. Grade Engineering® is based on five rock based ‘levers’ linked to combinations of screening, sensor-based sorting and heavy media separation. These involve exploitation of preferential grade deportment to specific size fractions during breakage: differential blasting to condition grade by size at bench scale; sensor based sorting at truck and conveyor scale; and differential particle density.Grade Engineering® is being developed and implemented by a consortium of over 30 mining companies, equipment suppliers and research organisations. Emerging results from collaborative site activities demonstrate potential for generating significant value, which can reverse the trend of declining productivity due to feed grade depletion.CITATION:Walters, S G, 2017. "The annual budget for the repair and maintenance of equipment at Syncrude Canada Ltd. is in excess of $450 million. Of this amount, a significant portion can be attributed to the loss of material on various pieces of equipment throughout the operation. In order to effectively battle the different wear and corrosion mechanisms that lead to material loss, it is important to understand how materials behave in the environments in which they are used. Through the work carried out at Syncrude, and work conducted with various external collaborators, significant improvements in both equipment reliability and productivity have been achieved. This paper will review some recent field trials where materials research has demonstrated the potential for significant improvements in equipment run life and reduced maintenance costs. These field trials will demonstrate the need for understanding the interaction between various damage mechanisms and the materials used in different services. The paper will also discuss current areas of focus along with future directions for further work. IntroductionSyncrude Canada Ltd, located in northern Alberta, Canada, operates a mining, extraction, and upgrading facility that removes bitumen from oil sand to produce synthetic crude oil. Oil sand is mined from the orebody using conventional open pit mining techniques. Recently, the mining scheme has changed from a dragline/bucketwheel/conveyor system to a shovel/truck/crusher/hydrotransport operation as depicted in Figure 1. Since the start of production in 1978, the identification, development and application of wear protection has been an ongoing challenge due to the abrasive nature of the oil sands and the massive volumes of materials that are moved. The use of various materials and application processes along with component design modifications has resulted in significant improvements in both productivity and reliability (Adamic et al., 1995; Llewellyn, 1996, 1997; Anderson et al., 1998; Chiovelli et al., 1998).In an effort to continuously improve the operation, Syncrude has been quick to adopt new wear technologies. As seen in Figure 2, since the start of operation, a variety of materials have been used to increase wear performance and ultimately equipment reliability and availability. Although Figure 2 does not show a time axis, the bottom axis may also be used to represent a time progression for the predominate use of these materials at Syncrude. Tungsten carbide metal matrix composite (WC-MMC) overlays are currently the materials of choice for most of Syncrude’s critical production applications. Metal matrix composite overlay technology has potential for significant improvements and Syncrude is actively working with powder consumable manufacturers to advance this technology."

MINE models have three distinct uses: 1. As exhibits in expositions and museums. 2. As exhibits in law suits. 3. As illustrations in teaching mining engineering. All three uses are in a sense educational. The third, or distinctively teaching function, has not been extensively developed in America as it has been abroad, chiefly because of the cost of the models and the scarcity of model makers. In connection with expositions, such as the Columbian, the Louisiana Purchase, and the Panama-Pacific, a number of very good mine and metallurgical models were prepared with funds furnished by State commissions, by mining organizations or mining companies. At the close of these, expositions, some of these models have been deposited in National or State museums or in educational institutions, but too many of them have been lost, or have been stored, away in some mining company's office or in the basement of some State building, where they have been lost sight of and have gradually fallen to pieces. A visitor to a German mining school is impressed by two facts: 1. The mining laboratories are in general inferior to those in America. 2. The mining museums are infinitely superior -to ours, particularly in models exhibited. One may reply to this comparison by saying that a museum is necessarily a work of time. From the historical standpoint this is, of course, true, but it is not necessarily true in connection with a working museum intended to illustrate current practice. For instance, the oldest mining school in Germany, that at Freiberg, has much excellent historical material, but very little on modern practice, while Berlin, one of the youngest German mining schools, has a most extensive and valuable collection of modern appliances and models. This is true in spite of the fact that one of the best-known model shops is at Freiberg, from which many of, the models to be seen in America have come. A plea for early contractor involvement in design is made before describing some whole life design implications for tunnels. "Taseko Mines Limited Gibraltar copper-molybdenum mine recommenced operation in 2004 with the initiation of a series of development projects to increase throughput capacity as well as modernize the mine.In the second staged development project, a VTM-1250-WB regrind mill was selected to replace the existing conventional ball regrind mill to achieve a target grind size of 80 % passing 45 µm. In the third staged development project, a second VTM-1250 regrind mill was selected for installation in Concentrator #2, to match the existing Concentrator #1 Vertimill. This resulted in approximately 25% spare regrind capacity in the Concentrator #2 design, complete spare parts interchangeability and potential future expansion capacity to 50,000 t/d with no circuit upgrades.In this context, a study was initiated to assess not only the performance of a Vertimill grinding circuit processing a copper concentrate to a particle size of 80% passing 17 µm but also to provide Taseko’s New Prosperity project specific design information for grinding to particle sizes below 80 % passing 25 µm.The objective of the work described in this presentation was to explore Vertimill ultrafine (sub 100 µm) grinding test methodologies at both the lab and pilot scales, compare the scale-up data with operational data from the VTM1250 at Gibraltar Mines and subsequently apply this information to particle sizes down to 80% passing 17 µm. The presentation will describe the results obtained preceded by a description of the Gibraltar regrind circuit historical operation and operational performance as well as a description of the Vertimill technology.INTRODUCTIONTaseko Mines Limited is a mining company headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Assessments of the stability performance of open pit highwalls have traditionally been based on consideration of surface movement rates. Although generally accepted in industry, this approach presents challenges for establishing appropriate threshold values to allow for safe mining operations and does not address the issue of total strain. Surface movement monitoring data from a limited number of open pit mining operations in North and South America has been evaluated in terms of highwall strain, rock mass quality and inferred mechanism of instability. Threshold strain levels for key stages of highwall stability proposed from previous work have been reviewed and are generally endorsed based on evaluation of additional data. An empirical highwall strain criteria for the assessment of highwall stability performance is postulated based on the observed trends in highwall strain data from the case histories presented.

Previous methods for measuring the flow of solids in Jnrdraulic conveying have not considered the important effects of slip velocity and particle concentration. In this paper an extension of the method proposed byShirato et al. (J. Chem. Engng. 'Japan, 1: 164-167) for determining mass flow in a vertical conduit is outlined.The present method consists of measuring' the volumetric flow of the slurry (by a magnetic flow meter for instance) and the density of the slurry in two pipe sections of different diameters. Effects of variation of slip withparticle concentration, not previously considered, are allowed.Problems involved in estimating the density of a slurry from differential pressure measurement are discussed.The major problem is the uncertainties in estimating frictional losses due to the wall in two-phase flows. The greater reliability of a more "direct" technique, such as by 'Y-ray absorption, for measuring solid concentration is emphasized.

"ABSTRACTThe paper addresses the application of automated monitoring, control, and navigation to improve dragline performance. SummaryImproving dragline performance in the Canadian coal mines is critical to the continued success of the industry. Draglines represent a large capital investment and coal prices are low by historic standards. This paper argues that the introduction of monitoring, control, and navigation on draglines offers an opportunity to significantly reduce a dragline’s operating cost per cubic metre moved. To place the importance of this in perspective, a North Dakota mine calculates that every 1% increase in dragline productivity means a savings to the mine of US$340,000 per year. MonitorsAutomated dragline monitoring is a well established technology with commercial products available since the early 1980s. The three main reasons for placing monitors on draglines are (Walker, 1993):1. productivity increases: reduce variations between different operators’ performance across different shifts;2. quality increases: increase the percentage of ore and waste loads that go to the correct destination; and3. special projects (engineering projects): justify installing static field exciters and regulator upgrades; implement power management; aid operator training; study high performance buckets, rigging changes, and various excavation sequences.Mines as diverse as Kennecott’s Cordero- Rojo Complex in the United States and Natal Coal Corp.’s Optimum Mine in South Africa report dragline productivity increases of 10% to 20% in the region attributed to the implementation of dragline monitoring."

Newmont has a large integrated operation in Northern Nevada with numerous mines, stockpiles, and processing facilities. There are over ninety defined metallurgical ore types and over sixty defined gold recovery process options. To take better advantage of the available synergies, a complete Nevada wide mine plan and process model along with a mixed Integer and Linear Programming optimization tool has been developed and implemented. This system is maintained and operated by a Nevada Planning Group. Standard in-house planning software tools and methods have been implemented at all mine sites. While increasing the effectiveness of planning in Nevada, these changes have allowed a significant reduction in overall Mine Engineering staff.

It has been proven theoretically and experimentally that the use of 10 - 30 per cent DRI in blast furnace along with iron ore or sinter results in lower coke rate and higher productivity. However, to-date this remains unpractised on a regular basis mainly because of economic reasons. The DRI produced by several methods are expensive and difficult to store/handle in large quantities because of its reactive nature and thus DRI in blast furnace remains unacceptable.

In the Integrated IT Systems proposed by Przedsie? biorstwo Robót Geologiczno-Wiertniczych—Geological and Drilling Company (PRGW) a network connects a database with all of the departments of a mining division. A key element thereof is the common graphics environment—Micro Station supplied by the firm, Bentley. PRGW’s SoftMine software and GMSI’s CadsMine that are used to design and schedule mining operate in this environment. The digital form of the design project facilitates the verification of information and the integration of technical solutions with SAP R/3 type financial—accounting systems. The system has been successfully implemented in the Brown Coal Mine in Poland.

Sustainability of plant operations in a rapidly changing mining environment requires a well-trained workforce to ensure smooth running of operations. To ensure availability of trained labor, Mopani Copper Mines PLC set up a training facility in 2013. The school offers training in Engineering, Mining and Process. The engineering section enrolls grade 12 school leavers for artisan training. Mining section offers comprehensive safety induction program to employees and contractors to meet the Mopani zero tolerance accidents safety policy. The process training section offers advanced training programs for plant operating personnel and university graduates. The program includes needs analysis, theoretical metallurgical modules, practical plant training and e-learning modules. The school also offers assaying and sampling courses. All the above courses are extended to individuals and other mining houses outside Mopani wishing to have their personnel trained. The Mopani sustainable development academy ensures that contractors engaged on the Mopani sites are fully registered, comply with all relevant regulations and have undergone induction program before they can be allowed to work on the mine. INTRODUCTION “Sustainable operation of the mining industry requires a continuous supply of trained human resources” (Kapobe et al., 2018). The publication by the Asian Development Bank (2014) argued that there was a mismatch between the demand for high-level skills and the oversupply of low-level skills. Globally, the mining industry requires continued supply of skilled manpower for its complex operations and long term projects whose sustainability is absolutely necessary. Implementation of newer technologies in plant operations to ensure cost effective and efficient operations requires trained and skilled labor at various levels to handle ever-changing challenges. Dutz (2007:152–156) made three recommendations for Building Worker and Management Skills in India: Strengthen enterprise - based training. The government should help ensure that the benefits of in- service training are widely recognized by enterprises, while simultaneously providing strong financial incentives Improve vocational training - Vocational education and training systems have been unsuccessful in preparing graduates to meet market needs, particularly because of a lack of interaction with industry. Public and private vocational education and training providers should be strengthened to make them more responsive to industry demands. Curricula should be updated to reflect modern technologies. Strengthen business, management education, management of research and commercialization - business and management education should be strengthened through public-private partnerships. Innovative management courses should be introduced. Although these recommendations were made for India, they also apply to Zambia and other low and medium income nations.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Newly published models suggest that some orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits formed by the remobilisation of trace elements during interaction with hydrothermal or metamorphic fluids from early sedimentary pyrite that was enriched in Au, As and Te. The released trace elements are transported by the fluids to favourable trap sites where they are deposited. Therefore, early enrichment of Au, As and Te in source rocks (particularly in pyritic black shale) can be crucial to the formation of orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits.The most important cause of the enrichment of gold and other trace elements in the sedimentary basins has been examined in this study to determine which basins are the most prospective for the development of orogenic gold deposits. An important influence for Au and other associated trace element accumulation in sedimentary pyrite is the temporal variation of trace element content in the oceans, as revealed by a database of over 1400 analyses of pyrite from black shale through geologic time. It is inferred that sediments coeval with those where sedimentary pyrite is enriched in Au and associated trace elements are more likely to be source rocks of orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits.Factor analysis of the trace element content of pyrite through geologic time was conducted to investigate the multivariate relationships amongst trace elements and how these chemical factors explain the uptake of trace elements. One important factor includes Te, Au, Pb and Bi content. The incorporation of these large cations into pyrite is enhanced by As3+ substituting for Fe in pyrite lattice. The As3+ ion occurs in relatively oxidised environments and, thus, it is expected that shales deposited in non-euxinic waters are better source rocks for orogenic gold deposits.The examination of both the time in which the sediments were deposited and the redox conditions of the basin, and the ocean more broadly, can be used as a guide to approximate the extent of a basin’s fertility. In a previous paper the writer dealt -with the jasper bar formations and their relationship to the structural geology of older pre-Cambrian rocks in the goldfields districts of Western Australia (24). He has pointed out in this ahd other papers that jasper bars, or banded iron formations, banded hematite or ,magnetite quartzites, jaspilites and related banded ferruginous or non-ferruginous cherts, occur in abundan'ce in the Older Greenstone Series of Western Australia (22), (24), (26). They are considered to represent special forms of banded ferruginous sediments, and are usually fpund in the field interbedded with more or less metamorphosed pasaltic 01' andesitic lavas and tuffs, now amphibolites, together with occasional thin bands of normal pelitic sediments, which go to make up a large proportion of the Older Greenstones in thfs State (26).Great thicknesses of fiat-bedded ]:landed ferruginous cherts are also found associated with cherty' carbonate rocks; quartzites, shales and thin-bedded dolomite whicIi constit'ute the Nullagine (Pl'oterozoic) system in the northwest of Western Australia. In the Hamersley Range district these banded ferruginous chert beds are the hosts of important deposits of blue amphibole asbestos.In the paper mentioned above brief reference was> made to the importance, of geological structure in relation to economic geology, particularly in the goldfields regions of Western Australia, and it was shown that jasper bars may have an important role in the study of 'the structural geology of many of these regions. Of possibly more immediate economic importance is the part that these rocks play, both directly and indirectly, as host rocks for mineral deposits-the chief of Which are gold, iron ores, blue asbestos, and manganese ores. The blue asbestos bearing banded iron formations mentioned above are confined to the younger pre-Cambrian Nullagine formations. They have been described in detail elsewhere (23). In this paper it is proposed to discuss the economic geology of the jasper bars found in the older pre-Cambrian series.The jasper 'bars have in themselves little or no intrinsic value except perhaps some of the more highly coloured and banded varieties which may be utilised for ornamental and decorative purposes. Probably the best known of such varieties is the so-called "marble bar;" a belt of, strikingly coloured banded chert occurring just south and west of the famous town of that name (see Fig. 1t). This consists of a hard, very fine, even-grained rock with alternate individual stripes varying from the thickness of a sheet of paper up to an inch or more in width, and ranging in colour from clear white to yellow, from various shades of pink to brilliant...

"Large-diameter ball mills have traditionally used steel liners—steel being a highly durable material that can be shaped into any desired geometry, among which the double-wave has been the preferred design. Such a design produces a purely cascading charge motion, which is ideal for the shearing action needed to produce a finer product. Today, however, rubber liners, which have been in existence for over forty years, are now preferred over traditional steel, largely because they weigh less and are easier to maintain. In this paper, we show the operating data from the Hudbay Minerals’ Constancia Mine, wherein the liners on a 26-by-40-foot mill were changed from conventional steel liners to PolyStl™ liners. It is then shown that this change reduced the amount of energy consumed whilst being able to maintain previous grind and throughput levels. The design is verified via discrete element simulations.IntroductionThe Constancia Mine (“Our Business: Peru,” 2016) is located in the southeastern Andes of Peru, at an elevation of approximately 4,200 m. It can be accessed via the CU-126 road, about 95 km from the town of Espinar in Espinar Province. The mine also contains both the Constancia and Pampacancha deposits in the Province of Chumbivilcas. Hudbay Minerals, Inc. acquired the mine in 2011, through the purchase of Norsemont Mining, Inc. and currently retains sole ownership of the property. Production of the Constancia Mine began in 2014, with commercial production levels being achieved in April 2015.The Constancia and Pampacancha deposits primarily include hypogene, supergene, and skarn ores. The Mine’s main products, however, are copper concentrate, with silver contents, and molybdenum concentrate. These mineral reserves are expected to last approximately 22 years. Constancia’s open-pit mine supplies a processing plant that is designed for 81,900 metric tons per day of throughput. Average annual copper production is estimated to be 82,000 mT (contained metal in concentrate). Actual plant production can be found in Table 1."

A combination of novel and æclassicÆ methods, namely electric pulse disaggregation (EPD), hydroseparation (HS), preparation of monolayer polished sections, and mineral liberation analysis (MLA) was employed to study ores from platinum pipes (Bushveld Complex, South Africa), pristine PGE mineralisation of the Main Sulfide Zone (Great Dyke, Zimbabwe), as well as ancient and modern gold/PGM placer deposits. It is shown here that the EPD technique liberates mineral grains of interest without any visible destruction allowing the study and analysis of individual rock-forming and ore minerals, in our case especially platinum-group minerals. The HS method is an effective tool in concentrating heavy minerals by factors up to 10 000 fold. As near-total recovery of grains >10 ¦m is achieved, the nugget effect can be overcome also in case of limited availability of samples (drill core, museum specimens). The MLA technique is a fast tool to detect and characterise mineral phases in ores and ore processing products. Many mineralogical parameters of individual grains and mineral assemblages can be deducted and documented. The results show that the techniques employed, either on their own or in combination, provide a wide range of additional information especially on platinum ores which is beneficial to both the researcher and the metallurgist.

In November, 1932, an investigation of silicosis was undertaken at the, McIntyre Porcupine Mine, Schumacher, Ont., atfer a discussion of the problem with Sir Frederick Banting and his, staff. As a result it was decided to carry on dusting experiments with animals at the mine in a manner that would duplicate as far as possible actual industrial conditions.At that time 50, guinea pigs were placed in the crusher nouse tunnel of the mill where a considerable quantity of fine dust, containing approximately 35 per cent., of free silica, was being constantly produced. These animals lived in this atmosphere for periods up to one year, and, while on autopsy large amounts of dust were found in the lungs, not a single case of silicosis had developed. These negative results suggested, among other things, that the mine gases might be a predisposing factor in the production of silicosis, and the results of this investigation led us to undertake the study of the hydrogen-ion concentration of the condensate of the atmosphere, both in the mine and in various sections of the mill.The C02 combining power of blood serum on a series of 400 miners was also studied at this time. While these results were inconclusive, the variation in the hydrogen-ion concentration of the condensate between the surface and underground atmospheres encouraged us to investigate the effect of neutral, weak acid and alkaline solutions on the solubility of silicious materials. Gye and Purdy were the first to point out that the chemical reaction and not the physical presence of silicious material was responsible for the production of the fibrosis in silicosis. This work was investigated by Gardner and Cummings who showed that the tissue reaction to quartz was definitely proportional to the size of the particle. They found that 1-3 micron particles of quartz produced an acute proliferative fibrotic response while the 10-12 micron particles produced only a foreign body reaction up to a period of three years. It is accepted that the dangerous silica particles retained by the lung are under 5 microns in diameter. We assumed that if the solubility of the silicious material retained in the lung could be reduced sufficiently by the addition of some non-toxic element or compound the usual fibrotic respohse would be modified. We found that the addition of certain compounds to silica would reduce its solubility in the beaker to a slight extent. But these compounds, when mixed with quartz...

The Resource Management Act 1991 provides for activities to be classified as permitted, controlled, restricted discretionary, discretionary, non-complying or prohibited in district and regional plans. This paper looks at the use of the prohibited activity status to restrict, in particular, mining. Often the use of prohibited activity status for mining appears to have no basis other than the negative perceptions that the local community and/or the planner drafting the plan has toward mining and quarrying.   The paper will address the current appeal regarding the use of prohibited activity status now before the Court of Appeal, and the history to the litigation. The relevance of the outcome of the appeal to the minerals sector will also be explained.

"Anglo American operates 18 Weir GEHO piston diaphragm pumps (PD) in the two pump stations of the 52-km (32-mile) long Minas Rio iron ore concentrate pipeline. The pipeline is designed to transport 26.5 Mt/a (29.2 million stpy) of concentrate from the mine to the export terminal at the coast.During the commissioning of the pipeline in the fall of 2014, high pressure pulsation levels were experienced, with peak-to-peak levels as high as 20 bar. Based on pressure readings it was concluded that hydraulic resonances were present in the system, which were excited by the third and sixth harmonic of the flow pulsation generated by the pumps.Based on this observation, Weir Minerals Netherlands, manufacturer of GEHO PD slurry pumps, recommended installing a phase shift controller that controls the phase shift between the crankshafts of the individual pumps, thereby minimizing the effect of the hydraulic resonances.GEHO piston diaphragm pumps and pressure pulsation analysisPiston diaphragm pumps are used worldwide to transport abrasive and/or aggressive slurries against high discharge pressures in the mining, mineral processing and power industries. The basic operating principle of a piston diaphragm pump is shown in Fig. 1.A crankshaft is driven by an external electric motor via a gearbox. The crank mechanism transfers the rotating motion of the crankshaft into a reciprocating motion of the piston. The piston displaces a hydraulic fluid, called the propeling liquid, which displaces an elastic rubber diaphragm. When the piston moves to the right, the pressure in the pump chamber drops below the suction pressure and the nonreturn valve on the suction side will open, allowing the pumped fluid to flow into the pump chamber. When the piston moves to the left, the fluid is compressed, and when the pump chamber pressure rises above the pipeline pressure, the nonreturn valve on the discharge side will open allowing a displacement of fluid into the discharge line. The main objective of the diaphragm is to isolate the piston and the drive mechanism from the abrasive and/or aggressive fluid and create a hermetic seal between the pumped fluid and the ambient environment. Piston diaphragm pumps as shown in Fig. 1 are among the largest positive displacement pumps in the world and have been produced with stroke volumes of up to 100 L (26 gal) per pump chamber for flow rates up to 800 m3/h, discharge pressures up to 250 bar and hydraulic outputs over 2 MW per unit (van Rijswick et al., 2010)."
