A novel variation of the GYPCIX process for the treatment of the acid mine effluent water from Grootvlei is described, in which a number of valuable by products can be obtained and the product water can be used for a variety of different purposes. A conceptual case study is presented in which the important cost parameters are described and certain critical path activities are indicated in order to derive a Return on Investment evaluation according to methods previously published. The study indicates that the treatment costs can be dramatically reduced, provided that proper utilization of the by products is taken into account. There are many possible uses for the water. However, by far the most advantageous contribution to the RDP and the best return on capital is derived if the water is used to establish small-lot farming activities providing work opportunities for thousands of people and contributing several hundred million Rands to the GDP. Vastly improved social conditions will be generated in an area of Gauteng that is in danger of rapid deterioration and a contribution will be made to maintaining mining activities in this area. The environmental impact is positive.

Talc is used to remove stickies from pulp during paper recycling processes. It is well known that the interaction is controlled by the surface chemistry at the talc/water, sticky/water and talc/sticky interfaces. If the interfacial tensions are known, one can calculate the free energies of interaction and hence predict whether the stickies can be removed by talc. In the present work, the surface tensions of several different talc samples were determined using the acid/base theory. The information was then used to determine appropriate interfacial tensions, which in turn were used to determine the free energy of interaction between talc and stickies. It was found that the calculated free energies are much more negative than those between the stickies and other minerals such as calcium carbonate, bentonite clay and kaolin clays.

This Information Circular is an abstract of a manuscript which was completed in June 1933, by Mr. Hugh M. Wolflin, formerly of the U. S. Bur eau of Mines. This abstract has been prepared by Charles Will Wright for presentation at the February meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in New York. It has been necessary to omit many of the details and most of the cost data and tables, as well as the illustrations in the original manuscript. As the use of airplanes in mining developments is making such progress and as a publication on this subject to be of greatest value should include the most recent information, it is unfortunate that, due to a lack of printing funds, it has not been possible to publish this manuscript. The purposes of Mr. Wolflin's paper are: (1) To describe briefly what has been accomplished in some outstanding examples by the use of aircraft in the mining and petroleum industries, (2) To record costs, (3) To present available information and suggestions to assist in solving future air-transportation problems in the industries under consideration.

the Rocky Mountain Region since 1950, drilled pier foundations have been widely used to combat structural movement problems in expansive soils. It is now an accepted practice for engineers to use drilled pier foundations in expansive soil areas. Piers are generally drilled into bedrock in a zone unaffected by moisture change. With some exceptions, such system has successfully prevented damage incurred in the structures as the result of soil expansion. In the last 15 years, no significant advancement has taken place in the design of the drilled pier system on expansive soils. Numerous failures continued to be reported. Causes for the failures were placed on poor drainage, inadequate void under the grade beams or mushrooms on top of the piers. Engineers realize that these are certainly not the major problems. The basic design criteria should be critically reviewed. It is the purpose of this paper to point out the actual problems confronted by designers, the failure module and remedial measures, The writer does not claim to have the solutions. In fact, it will be a long time before real solutions can be found, yet the writer believes the engineering communities, the construction industry and the general public should be aware of the true picture of the problem.

The recent discovery of the first black smoker-type hydrothermal venting and massive sulfide mineral deposits at a site in the rift valley of the slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge near latitude 26°N, longitude 45°W (Rona et al., 1986, Nature, 321: 33-37), demonstrates that a complete series of hydrothermal mineral deposit types exists at slow-spreading oceanic ridges (half-rate = 2 cm/y), similar to the series previously known at faster-spreading oceanic ridges (half-rate > 2 cm/y). The largest hydrothermal mineral deposit known at a seafloor spreading center is a stratiform massive sulfide body with bulk dry weight of about 100 x 106 metric tons in the Atlantis II Deep at the slow-spreading axis of the Red Sea. This observation invalidates the concept that size of a hydrothermal deposit is directly proportional to rate of seafloor spreading. Instead, the occurrence, grade and size of a hydrothermal deposit formed at a seafloor spreading center is controlled by anomalous chemical and physical conditions which may occur at extremely localized sites at the full range of spreading rates. The basic hydrothermal process involving subseafloor hydrothermal convection driven by magmatic heat sources appears to be similar at slow- and faster-spreading centers. However, differences exist in the periodicity of magmatic cycles that energize hydrothermal circulation (104 y at slow-spreading centers; 103 y at faster-spreading centers); in the distribution of hydrothermal sites along a spreading axis (estimated 100 km along slow-spreading centers; 10 km along faster-spreading centers); and in residence time

The transverse force developed by expansion-shell rock-bolt anchors on the wall of a drill hole as the bolt is tensioned was measured by the Bureau of Mines using a device specially designed and fabricated for attachment to a universal testing machine. Load cells equipped with electrical-resistance strain gages provided the data from which the transverse force, in pounds, was calculated. Seven different expansion-shell anchors were tested, and the ratio of transverse force to bolt-tension load was found to range between 0.98 and 1.94 to 1.0. The drag load appeared to be the major cause of the transverse-force variation, but the relative effects of individual factors that affected the ratio between the transverse force and the bolt tension were not determined.

Rock is a heterogeneous medium, a fact often ignored during blast design. In reality, the rock mass characteristics have a controlling influence on the outcome of a blast. If the optimum blasting results are to be achieved over a range of rock mass conditions, it is prudent to understand the role played by the geological features of a rock mass in producing overbreak around the periphery of an excavation. The field work was performed in a drift located in a geologically dominant rock mass and also included observations and assessment of blast damage at several operating mines. The blast damage was estimated on the basis of the half cast factor. The effect of rock strength, rock quality designation, orientation , frequency and aperture of joints, number and thickness of layers and hydrogeological conditions on blast damage has been described.

"The Zambian copper mining industry as we know it today had its genesis in the 1920s. Consistent private sector-driven investment in the industry over a period of over 50 years in exploration, mine development and operation, development of minerals processing facilities, building of infrastructure for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing, with attendant support facilities, including building of whole new towns, resulted in copper production rising to a peak of 769 000 t in 1969, providingover 62 000 direct jobs. The industry was nationalized in 1973 and remained in government hands for just over 24 years. During this period, the industry experienced a serious decline in production levels, reaching the lowest level in the year 2000 when production was 250 000 t. An average of just under 2000 jobs were lost every year in the 24-year period, reaching just over 22 000 direct jobs in 2000.Following the return of Zambian politics to pluralism and liberalized economic policies, the government decided to privatize the mining industry. The process started in 1996 and by the year 2000 all the mining assets had been privatized. The new investors embarked on serious investment to upgrade the assets and to develop greenfield mining projects. Fourteen years later and after more than US$12 billion investment, production levels increased year-on-year to a peak of 763 000 t in 2013 with direct jobs reaching 90 000.This paper discusses the impact of the mining industry in Zambia on the economy in areas such as employment, support for other industries, direct contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange earnings, and social amenities. The paper also focuses on the performance of the mines during these periods vis-à-vis mineral availability, mineral grades and complexity, new technologies, and human capital. This is looked at particularly in the light of current challenges the industry is facing. Suggestions are proposed on how the industry can be nurtured to continue being a major driver for the Zambian economy and a major player in the international copper mining business."

Chatree Gold Mine is currently the only modern day gold mine operating in Thailand, and is situated approximately equidistant from Chiang Mai in the north and Bangkok in the south. Environmental guidelines set by the Thai authorities require Chatree Gold Mine to achieve a Total Cyanide level of 20 ppm or less in the process plant discharge slurry stream prior to release into the tailings storage facility. This paper describes both the initial difficulties faced in achieving compliance on this limit utilising the conventional INCO SO2/Air cyanide destruction system and the subsequent process improvements initiated to both the leaching process and the standard INCO process to achieve the current compliance levels of approximately 99/100 shifts. Improvements were focussed on the dual aspects of reducing the formation of WAD cyanide and ferrocyanide species in the leaching circuit coupled with process changes to improve removal of the ferrocyanide species from solution during the cyanide reduction stage.

Specific energy is defined as the amount of work required to break a unit volume of rock and is used to predict the performance of mechanical miners. It is obtained from full-scale rock cutting experiments, which require large block samples, experienced personnel and expensive equipment found in only a few research centres in the world. Estimation of the optimum specific energy, at which a given geological formation is excavated at optimum cutting geometry in the most energy efficient manner, from mechanical rock properties to predict the performance/efficiency of roadheaders is the basic aim of this study. The mechanical rock property tests require only core samples, which are easier to obtain and to test. In this context, full-scale rock cutting tests are performed on 23 different rock, mineral and ore samples including sandstone, claystone, tuffite, chromite, trona and copper collected from some operating mines in Turkey. The optimum specific energy values are obtained for each sample. Physical and mechanical property tests are performed on the core samples obtained from the same samples to determine uniaxial compressive strength, indirect (Brazilian) tensile strength, static and dynamic elasticity moduli, Schmidt hammer rebound values, density, and Cerchar abrasivity index. The relationships between the optimum specific energy and the mechanical rock properties are analysed using statistical methods. The results indicate strong relationships between the optimum specific energy and the mechanical rock properties. The strongest relationships are found by using uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength. The performance models developed in this study are in good agreement with the empirical models previously developed for roadheaders and can be used reliably for prediction purposes. "Abstract — The Detour Lake gold deposit is located within the northwestern limit of the Archean Abitibi Subprovince of the Superior Province. Mineralized zones are hosted by a sequence of pillowed and massive flows, hyaloclastite units, and altered ultramafic rocks, and are commonly oriented parallel to a series of high-strain zones that are co-planar to the regional-scale Sunday Lake Deformation Zone. Early in its kinematic history, the Sunday Lake Deformation Zone placed older (2.72 Ga) volcanic rocks of the Detour Lake Formation over younger (2.70 Ga) sedimentary rocks of the Caopatina assemblage. Gold mineralization is also parallel to the position of a laterally persistent siliceous rock unit, the 2.725 Ga ‘Chert Marker Horizon.’ The Chert Marker Horizon coincides with the boundary between the mafic-dominated upper Detour Lake Formation and the ultramafic-dominated lower Detour Lake Formation. Stratigraphic and geochronological data suggest that the Chert Marker Horizon is a deformed felsic volcaniclastic unit. At a cut-off of 0.6 g/t Au, the Detour Lake deposit contains 17.26 million ounces of Au within 445.9 million tonnes of rock grading 1.20 g/t Au. Gold occurs in shear-hosted and extensional vein arrays within rocks of the upper and lower Detour Lake Formation and within the Chert Marker Horizon. The Detour Lake deposit has many of the characteristics of a greenstone-hosted, quartz-carbonate vein deposit; its very large size may be attributed to large-scale rheological controls resulting in the formation of dilatant sites in permissive rock units. © 2012 Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. Why are the Moon and asteroids viewed as a potential business venue?Geology of the Moon and asteroids — Why do we want to mine there?Space enterprises are actively working toward establishing and operating lunar and asteroid mining locations for resource extraction, resource processing, conversion to salable products and distribution of the products and services in space and to Earth and beyond2.Forty-five years ago, the Apollo manned missions to the Moon returned rocks and regolith to Earth, which were studied and analyzed. What they found was that the Moon contains valuable minerals and resources. These minerals are largely due to meteor and asteroid impacts, which have, over eons, created this mineral-rich regolith. These impacts have occurred on Earth as well, for billions of years, particularly early on in the history of the solar system. However, on Earth, wind, water and vegetation have erased most of these impacts. On the Moon, in contrast, the only weathering is caused by subsequent impacts and the solar wind."

Transient states of the air parameters in mine workings occur as the effects of natural and technological disturbances, and in particular as a result of changes in ventilation conditions, caused by alteration of the mine workings geometry, state of fans performance or emission of gases. Particularly significant are those transient states caused by disturbances resulted from catastrophes, since they are frequently associated with violent phenomena that may be a danger for life and health of the staff working underground. The paper presents a number of examples of transient states of the air parameters in mine workings after a catastrophe, like the bump in the ZABRZE-BIELSZOWICE coal mine. Registration of air disturbances by the monitoring systems of ventilation in mine workings in the area of disaster both at the moment of a catastrophe occurrence and later during the rescue operation, enabled to track out the incident and identify the circumstances and reasons of those tragic events which caused death of 18 miners during last two years. Furthermore, computer simulations of processes occurring in mine ventilation network make effective research tools to be applied in practice, among others for the study of accidents and disasters.

Abstract-Since 1982, the US Bureau of Mines has inves¬tigated improvements in protection for operators of thin seam shuttle cars. Due to working height restrictions in thin seam mines (<_1.22 m or 48 in.). Federal mine regulations require that canopy protection on shuttle cars he provided only in mines >_1.07 m (42 in.). However, court obtained variances are granted to mines <_1.22 m (48 in). This paper presents ongoing research to design and evaluate a uniquely positioned, ergonomic compartment for a shuttle car that provides the operator with full canopy protection in working heights of 1.02 m (40 in.).

?Classification System Efficiency (CSE)? is a simple, powerful concept which can be used to measure and improve ball mill circuit efficiency. This paper describes six plant case studies which demonstrate the use of CSE to diagnose and/or improve grinding circuit performance, with related improvements in circuit efficiency ranging from 3 to 30 percent. The increased effective mill grinding energy is recaptured from energy that was going into over grinding, which can greatly benefit downstream mineral separation. The achievable CSE for given circuit design/operating variables is described, providing every plant metallurgist with the means to determine the potential for increasing their particular grinding circuit?s efficiency through increased CSE.

In a review of so 40 papers on damage to residential structures resulting from blasting, only 3 were found that present data on the observed amplitude and frequency of the vibration levels produced by blasting together with an observed degree of damage to a residential structure. The data from these three reports have been analyzed statistically to determine if one of the quantities, displacement, velocity, or acceleration, is more reliable than the others for estimating the degree of damage to a residential structure. From this analysis the conclusion is drawn that a given degree of damage to a structure is most closely related to the magnitude of the particle velocity of the wave motion passing thru the earth at the structure location. On the average, only minor damage it observed for peak particle velocities of 5.4 inches per second, and major damage is observed for peak particle velocities of 7.6 inches per second. When the spread of the data is taken into consideration, the following statement can be made: Wave motions that have a peak particle velocity in excess of 2 inches per second have a fair probability of producing some damage to structures, whereas wave motions that have a peak velocity less than 2 inches per second have a very low probability of causing any damage. Therefore, the recommendation is made that vibration levels in the vicinity of residential structures should be maintained below a peat particle velocity of 2 inches per second. The above criterion for safe blasting is considered to hold over a wide variety of soil and rock conditions because the original data were obtained for a wide range of soil and rock conditions and on various types of residential structures. The dewatering of fine particles is energy intensive and often requires costly capital expenditures. To address these issues, a series of advanced dewatering technologies have been developed at Virginia Tech. These include novel dewatering aids that enhance the performance of existing filtration equipment and an innovative hyperbaric centrifuge that utilizes both air pressure and centrifugal force for dewatering. The moistures obtained using these processes are 30-50% lower than those obtained using conventional methods. Another dewatering technology, known as the hydrophobic displacement process, can reduce product moistures to a level previously attainable only through the use of thermal dryers. This article presents test results obtained with these various advanced dewatering technologies along with estimates of the power consumption for each process.
