INTEREST in developing White Pine, considered since 1942, was renewed by the Korean conflict and its shortage of domestic sources of copper. In view of this Morris F. La Croix, president of Copper Range Co. of Boston, and of its wholly owned subsidiary, White Pine Copper Co., worked an agreement out with Government officials. Essentially the contract called for a construction loan of $57,185,000 at 5 pct interest, with $13 million additional supplied by Copper Range. Defense Materials Procurement Agency contracted for 243,750 tons of copper from the first 275,000 tons produced, at a base price of 25.5& per lb, the contract to expire Dec. 31, 1961.

For many years the Metals Research Laboratory of Carnegie Institute of Technology has been concerned with the statistical nature of the engineering properties of steel from an experimental viewpoint, particularly those properties representing ductility.' In the past three years new work has been directed toward evaluating the statistical nature of the endurance properties. It has been shown that both the fracture curve and the endurance limit in fatigue are markedly statistical in nature. The S-N curve (and the endurance limit) of ferrous materials is often determined with specimens which number as few as ten. The common procedure is to test the first specimen at a stress well above the expected endurance hmit. Each succeeding specimen is then tested at a progressively lower stress, until, after five or six tests, a specimen runs ten million or so cycles without failing. Two or three more specimens are then used to find the highest stress at which failure will not occur; the limiting stress determined in this way is called the endurance limit. It has now been found, however, that the variability in the fracture curve and in the endurance limit in heat-treated alloy forging steels is so great that S-N curves must be drawn on the basis of distribution curves which can be appraised only by statistical methods. Two methods have been adopted in this study: (1) straightforward statistical studies of cycles to fracture of a number of specimens at each of a series of stress levels, and (2) a new abbreviated statistical method, known as "staircase testing."2 The latter corisists in testing a series of specimens, one by one, with the test stress for any given specimen automatically

THERE has been considerable discussion among A metallurgists and others interested in the development of titanium alloys as to the nature of the fine line markings which appear in the microstruc-tures of unalloyed titanium and a titanium alloys. These markings have been variously called x phase, etching pits, and twins. Figs. 1 to 3 show typical examples of the line markings as they appear, respectively, in high purity iodide titanium, commercial purity titanium rod, and a high purity a alloy containing 0.2 pct N. The commercial purity titanium sample, shown in Fig. 2, contains both line markings and some spheroidal retained-ß phase. The ß phase seen in this micrograph should not be confused with the line marking, since it originates from the iron present as an impurity in the sponge metal. It will be noted that the line markings seem to have a definite orientation pattern with respect to the grains and in titanium noticeably resemble the precipitation occurring in artificially aged high purity Al-Cu alloys. This similarity led to the hypothesis that the line markings observed in titanium and a titanium alloys resulted from precipitation of some unknown phase. With the work of Hägg1 and McQuillan2 as background, there was little reason to suspect hydrogen of being responsible for the line markings. Hagg reported that up to 33 atomic pct H was soluble in a titanium, and McQuillan reported an a solubility of up to 8 atomic pct. Furthermore, McQuillan examined metallographically a 5.1 atomic pct H alloy quenched from 300°C and stated that the structure appeared to be a single-phase a solid solution. Line markings have been observed frequently and were first noted by Jaffee and Campbell3 in 1949. They did not observe them in vacuum-annealed titanium and a Ti-O and Ti-N alloys, but did observe them in Ti-H alloys containing 0.25, 0.5, and 1 atomic pct H. They stated that it was doubtful that the markings were a second phase based on hydrogen, because 1 atomic pct was far from the accepted solid solubility of hydrogen in titanium. Finlay, Resketo, and Vordahl,4 in 1950, concluded that the markings were a true second phase as a result of observations on their etching characteristics. Anderson5 Commenting on these markings in titanium was inclined to associate them with hydrogen, but was loath to call them titanium hydride, because of the reported high solubility of hydrogen. Work at Battelle Memorial Institute for the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics," done concurrently with the work described in this paper, provided information on the experiment converse to that described by Jaffee and Campbell in 1949. This work showed that the amount of line markings in unalloyed titanium could be decreased by vacuum annealing at elevated temperature. It was suggested that this was the result of removal of hydrogen; previously, the data of Jaffee and Campbell9 howed that the markings appeared when hydrogen was added. Recent work at Battelle for the Ordnance Corps, Department of the Army, which is described here, now establishes the identity of the markings as a titanium hydride phase. A sample of high-purity titanium rod 1/4 in. diam, 0.009±0.001 wt pct H (0.43 atomic pct), Fig. 1, was resistance heated in a 0.05 micron vacuum for 41/2 hr at 1500°C. During the early states of heating, the pressure increased to 150 microns, indicating that gases were being evolved. After cooling in vacuum, the iodide titanium rod was analyzed for hydrogen. Vacuum-fusion analysis showed 0.0006 ±0.0003 wt pct H (0.03 atomic pct) to be present.* Metallographic examination of the vacuum-annealed rod showed only a transformed ß structure. Hydrogen forms a beta-stabilized system with titanium, with a beta eutectoid at about 300°C and 44 atomic pct H2. 'The solid solubility of hydrogen in alpha decreases from about 8 to about 0.1 atomic pct from 300°C to room temperature. Hydrogen has little effect on tensile properties, but decreases notch-bar toughness to a large degree. This latter effect appears to be the result of increased notch sensitivity. PRIOR to this investigation, only a small amount of information was available on the effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of titanium. The effects of the other interstitially soluble elements, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, had received detailed study. Jaffee and Campbell1 indicated that hydrogen up to 1 atomic pct did not affect tensile properties deleteriously. Pitler' indicated that 1 atomic pct H, in titanium reduced the impact strength appreciably, but his alloys contained appreciable amounts of oxygen, and it was difficult to attribute the embrittlement entirely to hydrogen. The high temperature portion of the equilibrium diagram for the Ti-H system was established by McQuillan," and his data generally corresponded with the results of Kirschfeld and Sieverts," Gibb and Kruschwitz," Bevington, Martin, and Mathews," and other investigators. The lower concentration limit of the hydride phase varied considerably among investigators, and Gibb and Kruschwitz9 ad shown that small amounts of contaminants in either titanium or hydrogen caused considerable variation in this lower limit. In view of this pronounced effect of contaminants, the extrapolated value of McQuillan's, about 48 atomic pct at the 325°C eutectoid, appeared the most reasonable. McQuillan's lowest experimental value was 54 atomic pct at a temperature of 450 °C. The density of titanium had been shown to decrease with increasing hydrogen content, but discrepancies were noted among the various investigations. The best values indicated that the density was decreased from 4.56 grams per cc at 0.27 atomic pctl to 3.84 grams per cc at 61.3 atomic pct? This investigation was conducted to determine the effects of hydrogen on a titanium, both in high purity and commercially pure metals, and on high purity a titanium alloys. Material and Fabrication The literature indicated that impurities in either the hydrogen or the titanium must be kept to a minimum. For this reason, the initial studies were made with high purity iodide-refined titanium. The vendor's analysis of the iodide titanium and the hydrogen content of the as-fabricated Y4 in. diameter rods are shown in Table I. Two 1 lb ingots were prepared by arc melting under argon in a water-cooled crucible, using a water,cooled tungsten electrode. This equipment has been described.' As-cast Brine11 hardness numbers of 88 and 58 for these ingots were low enough to insure that the high purity of the metal was maintained during arc melting. The ingots were hot forged to % in. diameter rods at 800°C, cleaned by grit blasting, and then cold swaged to Yz in. diameter rods. The rod was then air annealed at 725 "C, ground to remove scale, and cold swaged to Y4 in. diameter (75 pct reduction in area). The material was then annealed for 1 hr in argon at 800°C to develop an equiaxed a grain size of about 0.05 mm. Micro tensile specimens and microimpact specimens were machined from this rod prior to treatment in the Sieverts-type absorption apparatus. Two lots of commercially pure RC-55 titanium were also used in this investigation to determine the effects of hydrogen and the normal impurities on mechanical properties. The commercially pure RC-55 alloy was obtained in the form of % in. diameter rod. The analysis of this material is also given in Table I. The % in. diameter rods were hot swaged

This year, Great Britain is looking back over a century to August 14, 1850, the day when the first "Act for the Inspection of Coal Mines" was passed in that country, an act which signaled the end of over two hundred years of hitherto uncontrolled and dangerous mining practices. It was back in the time of Queen Elizabeth that . thousands of pounds were invested in mining, particularly coal mining in England and Scot- land. By 1640 there were collieries producing 10,000 to 25,000 tons of coal per year. In the seventeenth century the Tyne district coal industry was organized into powerful partnerships, and coal took an even larger part in industry, as a source of power and as fuel for the iron industry. In the early 19th century a "phenomenal, almost devastating expansion" characterized Britain's coal industry, and it was sparked by a 111 pct in- crease in the population of England and Wales in the first half of the century. Coal production for those 50 years increased 470 pct and pig iron production was up 946 pct for the period 1801-51.

This paper presents an investigation of the accuracy of population balance model predictions for ball mill scale-up. Experiments performed in 25.4 x 29.2 cm (10 x 11.5) batch mill are used to estimate linear grinding rate parameters that, in turn are scaled according to specific power draft to predict performance in 381 x 292 mm (15 x 11.5 in.) and 762 x 457 mm (30 x 18 in.) batch and continuous ball mills, respectively. Results are presented for wet and dry grinding of two homogeneous solids, limestone (soft) and quartz (hard), and one heterogeneous solid, a complex molybdenite ore. In all cases good agreement between predicted and experimental product size distributions was obtained.

CITIZENSHIP is a rather abstract subject on which a great deal could be said-a subject on which a great deal is said -and still one which too many of us seldom think about and seldom work at. Too many of us engineers and business men have but a vague idea of citizenship. We think that if we go to the polls on election day and obey the laws scrupulously, with the exception of an occasional traffic violation, we are pretty good citizens and are doing our duty by our city, state, and nation. But when you think it over, that's a very passive observance of the important right of counting oneself a citizen of a country. There is nothing very positive in that attitude. There is nothing that indicates that we have sufficient interest to really go out and do a job for the -welfare of our country, forgetting any personal advantages or inconveniences that might arise. In other words, this type of voting-on-election- day, law-abiding citizenship does not keep us awake a single minute; it does not take any particular thought or require the expenditure of any time or energy.

Changes in the ultrasonic attenuation in steel specimens have been observed during tensile tests. Samples of AISI 1020, 1045, and 1095 steel quenched and tempered to a spheroidized condition have been used. Both attenuation and microstrain measurements fail to reveal preyield dislocation motion in the as-tempered specimens. Upon reapplication of the load to samples in the strain-aged condition there is a large preyield attenuation increase but no observable micvostrain up to 90 pct of the flow stress. These and other observed changes can be related to changes in the free disloca-tion density and the average dislocation segment length. The results show that the increase inflow stress in the strain-aged condition is caused by increased fric-tional stresses rather than by dislocation pinning. Strain aging is found to proceed through three distinct stages. The second of these follows the t2,3 law and is characterized by an activation energy of 20 kcal per mole. RECENT years have seen substantial progress in the understanding of the sharp yield-point phenomenon in metals; the influence of solute atom pinning of dislocations, of dislocation multiplication, and of the stress dependence of dislocation velocity on the stress-strain curve has been investigated. Evaluation of the relative importance of these factors in the various metals and alloys is not complete, however, because observation of the stress-strain curve alone is not sufficient to determine the yield mechanism. In the experimental study of the sharp yield point it would be desirable to be able to directly observe the dislocations in a bulk specimen. Ideally, the observations should be made during deformation because of the rapidity of recovery processes in lightly strained metals. While direct observation of dislocations under these conditions is not possible, certain physical properties sensitive to the dislocation structure can be observed while a test specimen is undergoing deformation. Of these properties, one of the most useful is the ultrasonic attenuation. The total observed attenuation, a, is due to a number of causes: acoustic diffraction, scattering by inhomogeneities in the structure, heat flow, magnetostriction, and dislocation damping. Satisfactory measurements of the absolute a are difficult to make because all of these factors cannot be evaluated in any given specimen, but changes in a due to changes in the dislocation contribution alone can be reliably observed by appropriate technique. Because dislocation damping is sensitive to small concentrations of long, free dislocation segments, observation of acoustic attenuation due to dislocations is particularly useful in the study of the early stages of plastic deformation. In the experiments to be described, acoustic-attenuation measurements have been made on steel samples as these were pulled through their yield in tension. While many details of dislocation-damping phenomena in the bee metals remain obscure, the main characteristics of this type of internal friction are established. At low strain amplitudes and at frequencies well below that of dislocation resonance (the conditions of these experiments) the dislocation contribution to a is given by1 where A is the density of freely oscillating dislocation segments, L is the average segment length, B is the damping constant for a moving dislocation, w is the frequency, O is an orientation factor, C is the dislocation line tension, and t is a numerical factor relating average segment length to the distribution of lengths. Because of its fourth-power dependence on L, a is highly sensitive to changes in dislocation free segment length such as might arise from unpinning, recovery, jog formation, or dislocation intersection. The above equation is not valid near the resonant frequency of dislocations, but the segment length in steel is believed to be much too short to cause over-damped resonance near 10 Mc; this will be discussed later. In the present experiments plastic-strain measurements with a sensitivity of 2 x 10-5 were also made during the early stages of loading in order to detect preyield strain. THE strike and dip of bedded formations is readily determined by trigonometry if some marker horizon is intercepted by three holes. If no marker can be identified and if orientation of the cores is unknown, as is the usual case in diamond drilling, the determination still can be made readily by the use of a stereonet if the bearing, inclination, and angle the bedding makes with the core axis is known for each of the three holes. Such determination, valid only if the bedding orientation is fairly uniform within the area drilled, is considered simpler, faster, and more effective than any solution previously published. Method: The steps of this procedure are as follows: 1) Mark north and south poles on tracing paper placed over stereonet.* 2) Plot the three diamond drillholes by drawing a line from the center of the net in the direction of the bearings of the holes. Then rotate the paper until each line, in turn, lies along the equatorial diameter of the net; the end of each line is determined by the inclination of the hole measured in degrees from the periphery toward the center of the net along the equatorial diameter. Fig. 1 illustrates a vertical hole and a hole inclined at —23" due east. 3) With the projection of one diamond drillhole along the equatorial diameter, measure from the end of the hole, to the east and then to the west, a dis- tance in degrees equal to the core axis-bedding plane angle. Find two more points by measuring the same number of degrees north then south along the great circle from the end of the drillhole. Draw a circle, the center somewhere along the direction of the projection of the drillhole, to connect these four points. Draw circles for the other two diamond drillholes in the same manner. See Fig. 1 for two circles representing core axis-bedding plane angles of 35" and 23" and Fig. 2 for these plus a third circle representing a core axis-bedding angle of 42" in a hole bearing S 50 W inclined at —52". 4) Rotate the tracing paper until one great circle on the stereonet is found which is tangent to all three of the circles or parts of circles derived in the previous step. Trace this great circle on the paper and join its ends with a straight line passing through the center of the net. The bearing of this line is the strike of the bedding. In Fig. 2 the bedding strikes N 77 E. 5) Rotate the paper until the strike is along the polar diameter of the net. The dip of the bedding is determined by measuring along the equatorial diameter the distance in degrees from the periphery of the net to the great circle derived in step 4. The dip of plane illustrated in Fig. 2 is 55" to the N 13 W. Fig. 3 indicates the solution for three holes whose bearings and inclinations are N 20 W and —43o, due E and —30°, S 30 W and 23" with core axis-bedding angles of 30°, 50°, and 43" respectively. The bedding (stippled area) strikes N 44 W and dips 70" to the southwest.

The oil industry in Kentucky during the year 1937 shows some improvement over that of 1936, although not to as marked a degree as 1936 over 1935. Oil in Eastern Kentucky In eastern Kentucky more than 150 new inside wells were completed in the pools of Estill, Powell and Lee Counties. Also, a number of wells were completed to be used as intake wells in repressuring operations. Repressuring is proving more successful in this area than was expected, as the producing formation was the Corniferous limestone. However, when the repressuring work was started, cores taken of this formation showed that the oil in the second and third pays was from a true sand, only the first pay in the top being a sandy lime formation. In the Weir sand fields of Magoffin, Johnson and Lawrence Counties, continued repressuring operations caused an increase in the quantity of oil. These operations and the completion of 20 new wells in the Maxon sand and the Big lime (Mississippian) in Martin and Floyd Counties produced an increase in the oil production from eastern Kentucky of 100,000 bbl. over that of 1936. As an illustration of what may yet be done in the fields of eastern Kentucky, one repressuring operation involving four oil wells and one pressure well produced an increase in production, or an additional recovery of 7200 bbl. of oil during the year. This amounts to a recovery of 2000 per acre for the 3.6 acres involved. In other fields of eastern Kentucky, as in the Corniferous pools of Estill, Powell and Lee Counties, increases in the runs are noted as follows: In the area of the Estill County pool from which the oil passes through the Revena pumping station, the production in 1935 was 88,175 bbl.; in 1936, was 102,849 bbl.; and in 1937 was 107,704 bbl. Dr. Clark has given an excellent resum6 of the recent theoretical re- search work that has been done on the generation and propagation of stress waves in various types of media.1 Unfortunately the dynamic properties of rock do not fit the assumed properties of the idealized media. As a result, none of the theoretical solutions for the generation of stress waves by applied pressures to interior boundaries of the spherical or cylindrical cavity appear to be completely satisfactory to explain experimental data. This fact does not mean that the theoretical work is in error. It simply means that the appropriate dynamic properties of rock have not been taken into account in the present theoretical derivations. Because of the difficulty of theoretically accounting for the crushing and cracking that takes place when explosives are detonated in spherical or cylindrical cavities, it seems advisable that future theoretical studies should attempt to separate the generation of stress waves from the propagation of stress waves. Perhaps if these two problems are separated, we may be able to solve one of them satisfactorily so that theory and experimental data agree. Dr. Clark's resumé of the research work on scaling and crater formation by point charges is aimed at obtaining a basic understanding of the physical theory of rock breakage, wave generation, and wave propagation. A cursory reading of Dr. Clark's paper shows that there is very little information summarized that can be used by the practicing engineer in the field of blasting. D ETERMINATION of the surface area of finely divided minerals is of interest to mineral engineers engaged in flotation, comminution, and dewatering studies. In the industrial minerals field, many materials are classified as to fineness according to their specific surface (surface area per unit weight). A method of surface area determination has been tested and used in the Richards Mineral Engineering Laboratories at M.I.T. It involves low temperature krypton adsorption measurements using the technique described by Beebe.1

The method of interactive dimensioning is based on the computation of the loading-deformation curves caused by country rocks on the pillars with numerical methods. The comparable loading-deformation curves of pillars with different shapes are determined with small-scale model tests in a servo-controlled testing machine. The equilibrium points, i.e. the stability of the different pillar-country rock systems are determined by matching these curves adequately scaled. A case from a Finnish mine is presented together with the stoping results.

A technique is described for preparing finegrained lead telluride by ultrasonic agitation of a solidifying melt. Material prepared by this technique is dense and chemically homogeneous. N-type PbTe, containing 0.03 mole pct PbIz, has been made and its thermoelecCric Properties have been measured as a function of temperature. For comparison, the properties of similarly doped PbTe made by cold pressing and sintering, and by extrusion, have also been measured. The ultrasonically prepared material compares favorably with the others in its thermoelectric-efficiency factor. Comparison of compressive-flow curves for the three kinds of PbTe show that the ulhasonically prepared material has much superior ductility. The cleavage strength of the ultrasonic material is related to the grain size, D, by the Petch relation:Extrapolation to infinite grain diameter yields a fracture strength of 5000 psi for single-crystal PbTe. WHEN metals and semiconductors solidify in a mold they normally assume one of three cast structures illustrated in Fig. 1.' Solidification in a casting starts at the mold walls where a large number of fine crystals of random orientation can be nucleated to form the chill zone. Because of the anisot-ropy of the growth rate, those crystals whose direction of maximum linear growth is parallel to that of the heat flow grow faster and crowd out the crystals of less favorable orientation. A second zone, having a preferred orientation, called the columnar zone, thus forms adjacent to the chill zone. The speed of growth of the columnar grains will depend, in the case of limited undercooling of the melt, on the rate at which heat can be abstracted. The columnar zone can extend to the center of the casting, Fig. l(a), but it is frequently followed, in solid-solution alloys, by another zone of equiaxed randomly oriented grains in the central portion of the casting, Fig. l(b). The equiaxed structure in Fig. l(c) represents the completely grain-refined case where the equiaxed grain size is small. The third type of structure is the most desirable because it imparts a somewhat higher strength for all except high-temperature applications, it reduces segregation of the doping constituent, and it reduces the possibility of hot tearing (the separation of grains due to the melting of a low-melting point constituent in the grain boundaries). In order to obtain fine-grained castings, the nu-cleation frequency must be increased and grain growth must be restricted. Various techniques have been employed for obtaining this end, namely: rapid cooling, vibration, and inoculation of the melt. The success of these techniques depends upon the characteristics of the metal species and on factors controlled by heat transfer through the crucible walls. Recent studies2" have shown that the application of ultrasonic energy to the solidifying ingot is an extremely powerful tool in the improvement of the crystalline structure of metallic castings. Both the mechanical properties and homogeneity of the ingots are improved. Ultrasonic oscillations may affect the crystallization process by 1) permitting subcritical nuclei to agglomerate and thus form nuclei of sufficient size to cause crystallization, 2) changing the state of surface adsorption of various catalysts found in the liquid melt, 3) breaking pieces of solid from the solidified surface near the supercooled region thereby increasing the number of possible nuclei, 4) causing temperature fluctuations to occur in certain parts of the melt thereby increasing the supercooling at specific points in the liquid, and 5) decreasing the critical nucleus size by increasing the pressure at specific points in the melt.' Perlite, as a volcanic glass, has been recognized since the Third Century, B.C. (Langford, 1978). The precise details of discovery often become lost in antiquity, and the variations among the stories pertaining to the more recent discovery of perlite as a material of commerce are no exception. Credit in the United States is given to a dentist who, while experimenting with tooth enamels about 1941, discovered that perlite-the rock-intumesced when subjected to heat. At about the same time it is reported that the chief geologist of Silver and Barytes Ores Mining Co. attempted to put out a picnic bonfire on the shores of Milos Island, Greece by throwing beach sand on it. The ensuing pyrotechnic display immediately conjured up in that man's mind the possibility of a new use for the volcanic rock that constituted most of the island. Very little was done with this discovery either here or abroad until after World War II. Today the name perlite is applied to both the hydrated volcanic glass, generally of rhyolitic composition, and to the lightweight aggregate that is produced from the expansion of the glass after it has been crushed and sized. Petrologically, it is defined as a glassy rhyolite that has a pearly luster and concentric, onionskin parting. Occurrences of perlite are restricted to several Tertiary to Quaternary age rhyolitic belts that trend in a generally north-south direction around the world. Commercially suitable deposits generally occur as domes of several hundred feet in height, although glassy zones in welded ash-flow tuffs and others associated with dikes and sills also have been reported. Mining is by ripping and blasting from open pits. Because of weight considerations, perlite usually is shipped to the local market area for subsequent expanding. In the United States, New Mexico leads in production with Arizona, California, Nevada, Idaho, and Colorado following in approximately that order. The principal use for expanded perlite is as a lightweight insulating aggregate in cryogenics, in plaster, concrete, and in loose fill insulation. Expanded perlite is also used in horticultural applications, and after subsequent milling and classification, as a filter aid. The United States is the world's largest producer and consumer of perlite. Table 1 shows the world production of perlite and Table 2 shows the perlite mined, processed, expanded, and sold or used by producers in the United States. Geology Composition and Morphology Any discussion of perlite must take into consideration its dual nomenclature, for it is known by the same name as both the naturally occurring rock and, after processing and expansion, as the lightweight aggregate of commercial significance. In its naturally occurring form, perlite is a rhyolitic glass that contains from 2 to 5% combined water. While perlite also can occur as andesitic or dacitic glass, these latter types are of negligible commercial significance. Table 3 lists the chemical composition of a few typical perlites (Anderson, et al., 1956; Langford, 1979). What sets perlite of commercial significance apart from other volcanic glasses is the fact that under the proper conditions of preparation-crushing and sizing-it will, when rapidly introduced into a flame of sufficient temperature, expand or "pop." All of the elements of composition contribute to the expansibility of the rock. The role of the combined water, however, is the most significant because it is believed not only to produce a fluxing effect in the softening of the highly siliceous glass prior to expansion, but it is also responsible for the explosive force of expansion through volatilization during heating. THE president of a large smelting and refining company once telegraphed me that they had acquired extensive mining interests in northern Peru and requested me to inspect their properties as it would be necessary to install a system of aerial tramways between their mines and treatment plant. The concentrator was about 50 mi. from the coast, reached by a fairly good motor road. From the concentrator an aerial tramway would he required, about 6 mi. long, to their first property, a gold and silver mine. The lower terminal of the tramway was at an elevation of 4000 ft. and the mine at an elevation of 9500 ft.

During the year 1936 improvement in the oil industry in Kentucky continued at about the same rate as shown by that of the year 1935 over the year 1934. The development of several new pools in western Kentucky and the increase in the application of repressuring methods to the old fields of eastern and to a lesser extent of western Kentucky increased the total production to 5,481,227 bbl., as compared to 5,175,054 produced in 1935. The principle sources of this increased production are the Livermore field and the new Bates Knob field in McLean County, in western Kentucky, and the result of repressuring operations in the " Corniferous" pools of Lee, Powell, Wolfe, Morgan and Estill Counties and the "Weir" sand (of Mississippian age) fields of Magoffin, Lawrence and Johnson Counties in northeastern Kentucky. The last named fields have a producing sand especially adaptable to these methods. Drilling No new fields were opened in eastern Kentucky during the year. All new drilling was codned to pressure wells and new oil wells to complete patterns around the intake wells. Owing to the relatively low "initial" or flush production of the wells in this section—even though the ultimate recovery per acre is as large—higher prices for crude will have to prevail before extensive search for new fields is begun; as in northwestern Kentucky, where active exploratory work has been carried on as in the several preceding years, resulting in numerous new and prolific, although comparatively small fields. In this section approximately 500 new oil wells drilled in the Owensboro field, embracing several pools in Ohio, Hancock, Daviess, McLean, Henderson, Webster and Nuhlenberg Counties in the northwestern part of the state. The total oil production for this field during 1936 exceeded by many thousand barrels the 2,821,722 bbl. produced in 1935. In these fields the producing sands range from the middle Missis-
