Inhomogeneous yielding during the early stages of plastic flow has been observed in many metals and has long been a subject of controversy. Low carbon steel, when strained at room temperature, exhibits a distinct yield point at which the metal ceases to behave elastically and begins to flow plastically without further increase in stress,† often with an actual decrease in stress from that existing at the yield point. One manifestation of this behavior is the familiar Lüders lines. The extent of the yield point elongation (the plastic strain which results without raising the stress above that at the initial yield point) may be several percent. Several explanations of this type of yielding in steels have appeared in the literature:1-3}; 1. The segregation of carbides or other constituents at the grain boundaries of ferrite forms cell-like blocks which break down at a higher stress than that at which the ferrite alone will flow. 2. The precipitation of various constituents within the ferrite itself in some way blocks initial flow until a higher stress is reached, after which a great deal of flow occurs without further increase in stress. 3. The restraining influence of neighboring, less favorably oriented grains in a polycrystal results in a storing up of energy, which on yielding is sufficient to cause the continued propagation of slip bands on the multiplicity of slip systems available in adjacent iron crystals without increase in stress. 4. Local segregation of carbon atoms increases the stress required for the initial propagation of dislocations. The stress required for further deformation is lower.3 Such an explanation would require the presence of upper and lower yield points in single crystals. Low and Gensamer2 have shown that heterogeneous yielding can be eliminated by removal of carbon and nitrogen from polycrystalline steels by wet-hydrogen treatment. They also demonstrated that the re-introduction of minute amounts of carbon or nitrogen caused a return of the yield point. Observations of the initial flow of single crystals containing small amounts of carbon and nitrogen- should provide a clue to the explanation of inhomogeneous yielding. Previous tests of iron crystals4-6 can not be considered conclusive because it is uncertain whether the carbon and nitrogen were satisfactorily removed by the decarburization technique employed. The purpose of the experiments described herein was to determine whether single iron crystals containing either carbon or nitrogen would exhibit in-homogeneous yielding. Experimental Procedures THE PREPARATION OF SINGLE CRYSTALS All crvstals were formed in the following way. Aluminum killed sheet material 80 mils thick was machined into specimens of the outer contour shown in Fig 1. These mildly tapered specimens were decarburized at 730°C for 16 hr in hydrogen that had been bubbled rapidly through water maintained at 70°. The existence of petroleum in California has been known for many years. From time immemorial the California Indians used this mineral, in the form of asphaltum, for various purposes. In the early history of the State the Catholic fathers utilized it for roofing their missions and other buildings. It is said that in 1855 or 1856 Andreas Pico distilled petroleum on a small scale for the San Fernando Mission. He obtained his crude oil from Pico canon, near Newhall, in Los Angeles county; and he was probably the first refiner of petroleum in this State. In 1856 a company commenced work at the La Brea ranch, in Los Angeles county, and tried to refine the crude oil. In 1857 an attempt was made to produce illuminating-oil from crude petroleum at Carpenteria, in Santa Barbara county; and there are records of similar attempts in other localities previous to 1860; but none of them were successful. The first scientific report on petroleum in California was made by Prof. B. Silliman, who published his researches in 1865. He spoke favorably of the possibility of obtaining petroleum in remunerative quantities in this State, and gave the results of his experiments in the fractional distillation of California petroleum. The next decade was marked by a considerable oil-excitement in California; and a great many companies mere formed for the purpose of petroleum-mining and for distilling crude oil. In most instances these companies did not meet with success; but it must be remembered that the pioneer oil-miners did not

One of the most urgent needs in the field of coal combustion is the ability to predict the performance of a coal from knowledge gained from small-scale tests. Numerous types of analyses and tests are conducted on coal, including the proximate and ultimate analyses, heating value, varieties of sulphur, ash analysis, ash fusion temperatures, free swelling index, petrographic analysis, and Gieseler. plasticity. The Illinois Geological Survey has made an intensive study of the value of these tests for judging the performance characteristics of the coal as actually utilized. To date, three reports1,2,3 have been issued, and another is being prepared. The present paper briefly summarizes some of the results found in the studies. Equipment The equipment used for the tests is described in some detail in the above mentioned publications. Briefly, it consisted of a domestic stoker, cast-iron boiler, and water-cooled heat exchanger, which were operated as a forced circulation hot-water system. The entire unit was mounted on scales. Instruments for recording the per- formance of the coal included a hot-water meter to indicate the quantity of water flowing through the boiler; a two-pen, mercury-actuated thermometer to record the temperatures of the water entering and leaving the boiler; a chemical-type meter to record the percentage of CO2 in the stack gases; a pressure gauge to record the static pressure in the stoker-air duct; and a multipoint potentiometer to record the temperatures in the stack and room, and the opacity of the stack gases. A 16 mm motion picture camera was available for taking pictures of either the fuel bed or the scale dial. Procedure The tests described in this report can be conveniently divided into three phases. For the first phase, a load of 5 or 6 tons of unwashed coal (usually screenings) was obtained from each of fourteen Illinois mines. These coals were all crushed and screened to a size of 35 in. (square hole) by 8 mesh. Combustion tests were made on a part of this raw, screened coal. Another portion was passed over a concentrating table to reduce the ash to what was considered to be commercially reasonable, and combustion tests were made on this upgraded coal. The ash content of the remaining coal was reduced to a still lower figure by passing it over the washing table with greater reject, or by standard float-sink procedure. This cleaned fraction was then tested in the stoker-boiler unit. Thus three coals with varying ash content were tested from each mine. For the second phase reported here, coals were obtained from four Arkansas mines and tested as received and after passing over the concentrating table with a normal reject. OUTSTANDING among the year's events in copper has been the reimposition of an import duty of 4r. per pound in this country which became effective June 21. In consequence of this action by Congress, the Ottawa Empire conference recommended a duty of 2d. per pound equivalent at normal rate of exchange to our 4c. duty, on all copper originating outside of the Empire. Lip to the middle of this year only Russia and Japan had a closed market; the import duty on copper in Russia is 30 per cent ad valoremm and in Japan about 2c. Russia's consumption has always been in excess of production and she has imported from 2(1,000 to 40,000 ton, of copper per annum. Japan, with a production of 6,000 to 7,000 tons per month, has absorbed, in normal times, its production, but during recent: sears has exported varyiug quantities in 1929. 2,200 ton-: in 1930, 2,700 tons, and in 1931. 3,600 ton-. Aside from the-e two countries, the international market has heretofore been free. It and when the British Empire duty become, effective the world's markets will be divided into four unit: 1. Russia and Japan, 2. United States. 3. British Empire. 4. Rest of the world. The world's production at present is rennin it the rate of 930.000 tons per annum. This year's production will be over 1,000,000 tons because the several curtailment did not become effective until the second quarter. consumption will be slightly in excess. A FORM of apparatus for volumetric determinations which shall possess the features requisite for the constant use of potassium permanganate, is a very desirable fixture in a well-appointed laboratory. Expedients to economize time and insure accuracy are generously employed for various other reagents, while the permanganate seems to have been consigned to the use of an ordinary burette, and a black bottle of the standardized solution. But the introduction of new, methods dependent on the permanganate, and the urgency of technical requirements where it has long been indispensable, require a revision of practice more scientific and convenient. The apparatus designed by the writer for the laboratory of the Thomas Iron Company at Hokendauqua, Pa., is so simply contrived and works with such entire satisfaction that a description of it may be of use. It may be prefaced that the characteristics of a suitable device offer some mechanical difficulties when combined in a continuous appliance. The burette, B (50 C.C. to 1/10 c.c.), shown in Fig. 1, consists of the graduated tube proper and an arm, E, fused to it below the 50 c.c. mark. At its top are rubber connections with the blast-aspirator, shown in the cut (Fig. 2) of the front view. By means of an extra stopcock, D, connection through E is established with the reservoir F. The principal event during 1936 was the sale of Mosul Oilfields, Ltd. to Mosul Holdings, Ltd., a British company with French and American participation, and the expansion of its wildcat activities to untested structures on its West Tigris concession. Mosul Holdings continued the exploration of its low-gravity Qaiyarah-Najmah-Jawan-Qasab field. The Iraq Petroleum Company's systematic exploration and exploitation of its Kirkuk field was continued on a scientific unitized basis. Pressures and gas-oil ratios remained satisfactory. All wells were produced by flowing. A stabilization plant large enough to supply the 4,000,000-ton pipe line to the Mediterranean was completed at Kirkuk about the close of the year and only sweet oil is now being exported. The Khanaqin Oil Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co., Ltd., continued the normal exploitation of its Naft Khaneh oil field, refining and marketing through the Rafidain Oil Co., Ltd. for local Iraq market. This field lies partly on the Iraq side of the boundary and partly on the Iranian side, the latter portion being known as Naft-i-Shah. Only the Iraq side is considered in this paper. Slightly more than 30,000,000 bbl. of crude was produced in Iraq during 1936. The I.P.C. exported all crude sold outside of Iraq and showed an increase of about 2,500,000 bbl. over the preceding year. Crude production in Iraq for export in 1934 was 7,096,669 bbl.'; in 1935 it was 27,014,904 bbl. and in 1936 it was 29,521,053 barrels.

During the driving of the main haulage level at the Copper Mountain mines of the Canada Copper Corpn., Ltd., near Princeton, B. C., some very rapid driving was done, though no claim for a world's record is made. Conditions, however, were unfavorable for economical operations. The cost of power was high, for the fuel was of poor grade; besides, during the time the work was in progress, very little other power was needed so that most of the power cost was charged against the footage. The transmission line consisted of No. 4 galvanized iron wire with the result that the line lass was considerable. The voltage transmitted was about 30,000. The plant was operated under a lease, which was due to expire about the same time this work was supposed to be completed; an extension was refused, therefore speed was most important. The plans called for a straight adit 2900 ft. (884 m.) in length. At a point 2800 ft. (853 m.) from the portal, two raises were to be put up to the next nearest workings, a difference in elevation of about 800 ft. (243 m.). One of these was to be a two-compartment hoistway and the other a zigzag ore pass, or muck run. A location for these raises had been determined by a number of diamond-drill holes, but the material to be penetrated by the adit was not known. An analysis of the conditiom fm the dendrite-eutec-tic transition is presented which takes into account a temperature gradient. The composition and temperature in the liquid ahead of a eutectic interface growing at a particular velocity are used to determine whether dendrites can grow faster than the eutectic interface in the liquid which exists ahead of it. If the dendrites grow faster, then a mixed structure with dendrites growing ahead of the eutectic interface is expected. If the dendrites do not grow faster, then only eutectic will be present. The analysis is presented for Sn-Pb system, for which sufficient experimental data to make the analysis are available. The transition from eutectic to dendrites-plus-eutectic derived by this analysis is in good agreement with the recent experimental observations of Mollard and Flemings on Sn-Pb alloys. In alloys which grow with a lamellar eutectic structure, the lamellar structure can be grown over some range of compositions close to the eutectic composition. When the composition is too far from the eutectic composition, dendrites of one or another of the primary phases grow ahead of the eutectic interface, producing a microstructure consisting of "primary phase" interspersed with a lamellar eutectic. Hunt and Jackson' have recently predicted the range of compositions over which the eutectic phase should grow in Sn-Pb alloys, and the composition-growth rate dependence of the transition from eutectic to dendrites-plus-eutectic. This prediction was based on work on organic eutectics. The model on which the prediction was based assumed that there was no temperature gradient in the system, a condition approximately satisfied in the study of organic eutectics2-5 but not in the growth of metallic alloys. Mollard and Flemings6,7 have recently reported experimental results for Sn-Pb alloys in which they have located the transition from eutectic to eutectic-plus-dendritic growth. The experiments were performed using large temperature gradients (65 to 515 deg per cm), so that the assumption of zero gradient on which the predictions of Hunt and Jackson' were based does not apply. It is not surprising therefore that the predictions' were not born out by the experiments.7 In the present work, a modification of the model used by Hunt and Jackson is presented which takes into account the temperature gradient. The modified form of the theory predicts the transition from eutectic to eutectic-plus-dendritic growth in terms of the composition, growth rate, and temperature gradient. Good agreement with the experimental data of Mollard and Flemings7 is obtained. THE HUNT-JACKSON MODEL The model used by Hunt and Jackson' to predict the transition from eutectic to eutectic-plus-dendritic growth was based on the assumption that dendrites grow ahead of a eutectic interface only if they grow faster than the eutectic interface. Analytic expressions for the growth rate of dendrites and the eutectic in Sn-Pb alloys were obtained by fitting experimental data with equations whose form was indicated by theory.

AMONG mining men as well as in the popular mind the conviction has held sway that mining is pre-eminently a western industry. True it is that gold, silver, copper and other metals have made the States of California, Colorado, Montana, Utah. Nevada and Arizona famous. The prominence attained by these States as mineral producers is, however, not measured alone by the money value of the products of their mines. While the metals are without doubt indispensable in industry, the glamour of the precious metals, and the lure of copper, lead and zinc have given to their ore deposits a sentimental interest that often quite out-weighs their commercial importance. Today a great group of more commonplace minerals are finding a place in commerce and industry rivaling that of the metals, but there is little sentiment attached to them, and,. therefore, they attain relatively little publicity. This is the great group of the non-metallic minerals, exclusive of fuels and oils, including stone, sand and gravel, cement, lime, gypsum, asbestos, mica, phos-phate rock and many others. Almost unnoticed they have grown in production to almost unbelievable pro-portions. The estimated value of metal production for 1925 is given as $1,380,000,000, of the non-metals (ex-cluding fuels) $1,294,000,000. The non-metallic industries are not new, many of them date back almost to pre-historic times; but, as the greatest of them (on a tonnage basis) provides raw materials for the construction industries, it required the activities of the present age of construction to bring about their enormous development. Many of them enter manufacturing as well as con-struction. Non-metallic minerals constitute the back-bone of our great chemical industries. While construction and manufacture reach to all parts of the country their widest development has been in the great industrial centers of the eastern Seaboard and the middle West. Consequently the raw materials of mineral origin required for these great industries have attained a remarkable growth in the eastern half of the- United States. In compiling figures of mineral production for 1924, for which more complete data are available than for later years, the surprising fact is brought to light that the non-metallic mineral produc-tion alone of some of the eastern and middle-western States exceeds by a substantial margin the total min-eral production of some of the western States that have been classed as essentially mining States. Thus the non-metallic mineral production, exclusive of coal and petroleum, of the State of Ohio, was approximately $150,000,000; of Pennsylvania $175,000,000; and of New York $107,000,000. For the same year, 1924, the total mineral production of Utah was $84,357,000; of Montana $70,632,000; of Colorado $61,488,000; and of Nevada only $26,226,000. Even Minnesota, with its enormous iron ore production, reached only $107,845,-000, or a sum about equivalent to the non-metallic min-eral production of the State of New York.

The ore of the Southeast Missouri lead district consists essentially of galena in dolomitic limestone. The galena usually is in a very finely disseminated condition. The experience of recent years in the concentrating plants of the St. Joseph Lead Co. has shown that dry crushing carried to a point where about 90 per cent of the ore passes a 14-mesh screen liberates the larger portion of the galena, and minimizes further necessary reduction in rod or ball mills. Concentration practice has attempted to carry size reduction to a point where economic unlocking of the galena is obtained, without causing undue sliming of the very friable galena. While 60 per cent of the tonnage of the district is treated by the flotation process, only 40 per cent of the total concentrates is produced by that means, as efforts have always been made to keep the grade and tonnage of flotation feed as low as possible. The milling practice of the district for some years has recognized the generally accepted idea of better selective grinding in rod mills as compared with ball mills, with the attendant decrease in production of fines. The function of rod and ball mills in the various concentrating plants is the grinding of table middlings and coarse tailings that carry lead values too high to be discarded. The simplified flowsheet in Fig. I illustrates the place of grinding mills in the circuit. The arrangement of classi- fiers, tables and mills constitutes a closed circuit within somewhat flexible limits. In 1937 experiments were conducted in replacing the ball charge in a 6 by 4-ft. ball mill with rods 2 in. in diameter and 51 in. long. This step was taken with some hesitancy, as it was easy to picture a mass of tangled and crossed rods. However, no difficulties developed, and after a short trial period, six more ball mills were converted to rod mills. These mills are of the spur gear and pinion, belt-driven type, using in most cases a 75-hp. motor and having a 9½-in. open trunnion discharge. As ball mills, they carried a charge of 16,000 to 20,000 lb. of balls, 2 in. in original size. The feed to the mills was dewatered by dewatering wheels and introduced at 70 to 75 per cent solids, with a single scoop feeder. One change in mill design was found advisable when rods were introduced. The existing end liners had an outward flare of 3½ in. in 12 in. These were replaced by linings having vertical interior faces, in order to prevent undue end travel of the rods. This change gave an effective working length of 52¾ in. inside the mill. No alterations were made in the shell liners, which are of the smooth type, made of manganese steel 2 in. in original thickness. The rods at present in use are 51 in. long and 1¾ in. in diameter. The composition has been varied at times; at present they contain 0.70 per cent carbon and 0.70 per cent manganese. Some breakage and etching occurs as the rods become small, but this is considered preferable to using softer rods, which may kink and cause tangling of the charge. The mill charges

R. W. Raymond, New York City: In his paper at the New York meeting (Trans., xix., 28), Mr. Ledyard described, among other mines, the Belmont, in the county of Peterboro, Ontario, the developments of which at that time indicated, though they did not, perhaps, completely demonstrate, a deposit of high-grade Bessemer magnetite of very great extent. Mr. Ledpard said that experts estimated the quantity of ore within 100 feet of the surface at 1,000,000 tons. But the precise data upon which this estimate was based were not furnished. We are all interested in the development of fresh supplies of Bessemer ores. I think nobody who knows how enormous is the demand can seriously fear that such deposits will be exploited too rapidly. On the other hand, I need not here enlarge on the fact that a considerable number of enterprises, in which American ironmasters have been more or less interested, for the development of Canadian iron-ore deposits, have been unsuccessful, more by reason of disappointment as to the quantity of the ore and the facilities for cheaply mining it on a large scale, than as to its quality. Of course, a Canadian nine supplying the American market is handicapped at present, to the extent of 75 cents per ton, by the duty on foreign iron-ore; but this would certainly not be prohibitory in the case of a deposit sufficiently large, rich, and accessible. Or, to put it otherwise, there might easily be, somewhere in Canada, near our borders, a mine so favored that its product could be profitably

The diversity of methods available to engineers and geologists for studying rock masses is a reflection of the fact that, despite the rapid and encouraging progress made over the last few years, there is still no unified and comprehensive method which can be used to predict the over- all behavior of a foundation. Nevertheless, it is agreed that the fundamental characteristic affecting the engineering properties of rock is fissuration, and this paper de- scribes a few new or improved methods of studying fissuration and its influence on major engineering factors such as permeability, deformability, or internal stresses in the rock volume. TESTS ON SAMPLES Conventional tests on samples using thin slices can be improved by staining the slices before cutting with certain ionic dyes which have an affinity for certain types of surface. This shows up the microdiscontinuities. For example (quoted terms are French trade names) : "Turquoise Motylhne JSA" will show up porous alteration of basic feldspars. "Vert brillant SA" is used for acid feldspars. "Fushine ASA" will show up voids in all rocks. A mixture of "Turquoise" and "Rhodamine BSA" will show up zones of alteration in all types of feldspars. With this technique, it is easy to make an optical classification of the different structural types, e.g.: (1) rocks completely free from voids; (2) rocks with microfissures, which in turn can be subdivided into (a) rocks with microfissures secant to the mineral structure, (b) rocks with microfissures parallel to the mineral structure, and (c) rocks with ran-

The coercimeter, as its name implies, is an instrument for measuring the coercive forcet of magnetic substances. It was developed by Davis and Hartenheim in the Special Studies Section, Metallurgical Division. The value of this relationship in determining grinding efficiency has been shown by Dean.3 The determination of the surface contained in the subsieve sizes has always been a difficult problem for investigators. They made approximate measurements of the surface of coarse materials by sizing on screens, but for the determination of the surface of the sub-sieve sizes it was necessary to make detailed grain counts or elutriation tests, or to study dissolution rates. The technical literature contains many references to other methods for determining these surfaces, either by some special apparatus or by mathematical calculations based on distribution lines. Many of the methods are long and tedious, and the results of some, at least, are questionable. he turbidimeter gives quick results on ground cement. By using magnetite as the material to be ground, a simple determination of its coercive force by the coercimeter, requiring 10 minutes or less, can be transposed directly and accurately into units of relative surface. This subject has been pursued further by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo., and the following is a description of the results.

The methods of handling the oil output of the Mid-Continent fields are not unlike those practised in other oil fields of the United States, and it is not expected that this paper will present any entirely novel ideas. Some features of the practice of handling this oil may be of interest, however. Wooden Gaging Tanks Practically all of the oil sold to pipe line? and other purchasing agencies throughout the Mid-Continent field is gaged from wooden tanks. Steel gaging tanks are slowly coming into use, and are preferable in many ways—leakage and evaporation are reduced, and the strapping and recalculation of capacities are unnecessary. The wooden tanks are slightly coned to facilitate tightening the hoops. The sizes in common use are 250, 500, 800 and 1600 bbl. The number and the capacity of the gaging tanks upon any producing oil property depend upon its production, and the facilities for disposing of the output. The 1600-bbl. size was the most common in the Cushing field, particularly during the period of flush production. The tanks are distributed over the leased premises in groups of two, three, and four tanks each, and these are filled from flow tanks, or through direct pipe connections with the heads of the wells. Flow tanks are merely temporary reservoirs to facilitate the transfer of oil from the wells to the gaging tanks. They diminish fire risk, and are considered indispensable on small producing properties where water is pumped with the oil, as they permit the refuse and water to 'settle out before the production is run to the gaging tanks. strapping and Calculations After a gaging tank has been strapped (measured) and its contents computed, a deduction of 3 per cent. is made from its computed volume. Discussion of the paper of BOYD DUDLEY, JR., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 96, December, 1914, pp. 2767 to 2782. H. 0. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass.-At the close of the paper Mr. Dudley said that his experiments in the laboratory had shown that it was possible to separate nickel from copper by means of a chloridizing roasting, but that in order to demonstrate a process of this kind, work upon a large scale would have to be carried out. I think it was in 1913, that experiments of this kind were carried out at the works of the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Co., Philadelphia, in a Wedge furnace, and at Sault Ste. Marie in a Sjöstedt furnace. They showed a satisfactory separation of nickel and copper. The ore was first subjected to an oxidizing roast, then mixed with pyrite and salt, and given a chloridizing roast. A. H. Carpenter published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, vol. xcvii, p. 1085 (1914) the details of this work. The conclusion arrived at is, that if you subject sulphide ore to an oxidizing roast, finishing at the temperature at which all nickel sulphate is dissociated, i.e., 764° C., then mix it with pyrite and salt, and subject the mixture to a chloridizing roast between 600° and 700° C., you can chloridize a high percentage of the copper without chloridizing any of the nickel, and obtain thereby a satisfactory means of separating the two.
